We report the design and characterization of a disposable light shielded paper–plastic microfluidic device that can detect nanomolar levels of H2O2 using a smartphone camera and a light sealed accessory. Chemiluminescence reaction of H2O2 with bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)oxalate in the presence of rubrene and imidazole is confined to a paper reaction site where the individual reagents are delivered via plastic microfluidic channels. The net photon emission from the chemiluminescence reactions, detected by using a smartphone, is correlated with H2O2 concentrations. With a total reagent volume of 25 μL, the sensor system was able to detect H2O2 concentrations as low as 250 nM. The smartphone based chemiluminescence sensing system has great potential as a point of care diagnostic tool for monitoring nanomolar levels of H2O2 in biological samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the functionalized ligand 2-(imidazole-1-yl)terephthalic acid was obtained by grafting an imidazole group onto 2-bromoterephthalic acid. Then, defective MOFs were synthesized with Hf ions and the ligand in the presence of monocarboxylic acid acting as a modulator, and NHC (nitrogen heterocyclic carbene)–CO2 adducts were grafted onto the Hf-based MOFs to catalyze the cycloaddition reaction of epoxides with CO2 to produce cyclic carbonates under green conditions of ambient pressure and being solvent- and cocatalyst-free. The mesopore defects created by the modulator and DMC (dimethyl carbonate) solvothermal etching, the enhanced Lewis acidity of the Hf clusters and the grafted NHC–CO2 adducts can improve synergistically the catalytic performance of the MOFs via decreasing activation energy, promoting mass transfer and providing more active catalytic sites. The results show that the highest conversion rate reaches 81.64% at 100 °C and 10 h for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with epichlorohydrin. Continuous-flow rhodium-catalysed hydroformylation of long chain alkenes has been achieved with selectivities to the desired linear aldehyde of 92% and minimum rhodium loss, using a xantphos-derived ligand attached to an imidazolium salt in a supercritical fluid–ionic liquid system. A series of task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs) based on glycerylimidazolium cations have been prepared by reaction of 1-chloropropanediol, a compound obtainable from glycerol (a widely available and in-expensive waste product), with the appropriate base (1-H-imidazole, 1,2-dimethylimidazole and 1-methyl-1-H-imidazole). The reaction of 3-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)propane-1,2-diol with chloroalkanes, bromoalkanes and alkyl mesylates gave the corresponding salts which were characterized. Both softwood (southern yellow pine) and hardwood (red oak) can be completely dissolved in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([C2mim]OAc) after mild grinding. Complete dissolution was achieved by heating the sample in an oil bath, although wood dissolution can be accelerated by microwave pulses or ultrasound irradiation. It has been shown that [C2mim]OAc is a better solvent for wood than 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl) and that variables such as type of wood, initial wood load, particle size, etc.affect dissolution and dissolution rates; for example, red oak dissolves better and faster than southern yellow pine. Carbohydrate-free lignin and cellulose-rich materials can be obtained by using the proper reconstitution solvents (e.g., acetone/water 1 : 1 v/v) and approximately 26.1% and 34.9% reductions of lignin content in the reconstituted cellulose-rich materials (from pine and oak, respectively) have been achieved in one dissolution/reconstitution cycle. The regenerated cellulose-rich materials and lignin fractions were characterized and compared with the original wood samples and biopolymer standards. For pine, 59% of the holocellulose (i.e., the sum of cellulose and hemicellulose) in the original wood can be recovered in the cellulose-rich reconstituted material; whereas 31% and 38% of the original lignin is recovered, respectively, as carbohydrate-free lignin and as carbohydrate-bonded lignin in the cellulose-rich material. The combination of a [1111]metacyclophane blocked in 1,3-alternate conformation and bearing four imidazole units with MX2(M = Co, Cu, Zn and Hg; X = Cl or Br) complexes leads to the formation of a series of analogous neutral metallamacrotricycles. In the current paper, we have successfully synthesized three new mercury coordination polymers with fascinating structures and properties via a flexible sulfur donor ligand, namely, {[Hg(μ2-Cl)(μ2-Ls)]} n [BF4] n (1), {[Hg(μ2-Cl)(μ2-Ls)]} n [ClO4] n (2), and [Hg(SCN)2(μ2-Ls)] n (3) [Ls = 1,1-bis(3-methyl-4-imidazoline-2-thione)methane]. These complexes have been characterized by means of different techniques such as single crystal X-ray crystallography, FT-IR, elemental analysis (CHNS), UV-Vis, PXRD, BET, and TGA. Suitable single crystals of all complexes were obtained using the branch tube method with a very high yield and good stability due to the high affinity of mercury to bind to the thione groups. The cationic moieties of polymers 1 and 2 were isostructural, with a HgCl2S2 coordination core structure. The voids of the quasi-hexagonal packing of the columnar chains were occupied by unbonded tetrahedral BF4− ions in 1 and perchlorate anions in polymer 2. Polymer 3 has a less distorted tetrahedral geometry than 1 and 2, with a HgS4 core structure. By considering the thiophilicity of mercury, a thioamide-based Ls ligand was used to detoxify Hg(II) into insoluble polymers 1–3. The results of an MTT assay for (HepG2) liver cells confirmed the excellent cytoprotective effect of this ligand against mercury. Based on IC50 calculations, their toxicity was in order of polymer 1 > polymer 2 > polymer 3. These polymers were also considered as adsorbents for the reversible removal of iodine from solution and the kinetics of the process has been studied in detail. Interestingly, all of them showed an excellent stability and high capacity, in order of 763.53 mg g−1, 877.10 mg g−1, and 905.31 mg g−1 for polymers 1–3, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nowadays, nitrogen rich compounds are the key research objects for high-energy materials. In this paper, a novel nitrogen rich energetic compound (NABTI) and its salt (4) with bis(tetrazole)imidazole as the skeleton were synthesized by simple steps. Their detailed structural data and stability parameters were obtained through experiments, and the internal relationship between them was theoretically analyzed. The results show that they both have regular planar configurations and layer-by-layer packing patterns, and the 3D hydrogen-bonding network and π–π interactions inside the crystals weaken their sensitivity to mechanical stimuli. As the most direct parameter reflecting the energy level, the detonation velocity (D) and detonation pressure (P) of the compounds in the study were calculated through the EXPLOV5 software package. The calculation results showed that NABTI exhibited a better detonation performance (D = 8329 m s−1 and P = 31.4 GPa) than the same type (triazole–tetrazole, NATT) of compound. In this study, a novel and highly efficient "turn-off" fluorescence imidazole-based sensor (BIB) with a symmetric structure was synthesized by a four-step reaction, from o-phenylenediamine, 6-bromo-2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, and 1-bromohexane. The sensing mechanism was confirmed via fluorescence titration, HRMS, and 1HNMR techiniques. The results showed that the binding ratio of BIB and Ag+ was 1 : 1 in a DMF-HEPES (pH 7.4) solution (9 : 1, v/v). The fluorescence response of BIB exhibited a good linear response within the Ag+ concentration ranging from 2 × 10−7 to 8 × 10−6 mol L−1, and the limit of detection was calculated to be 4.591 × 10−8 mol L−1. BIB was successfully applied to the detection of Ag+ in water samples with recoveries of 97.25–109.50% and relative standard deviations (RSD) of 1.14–2.45%. In addition, BIB can successfully be applied to qualitatively and quantitatively identify Ag+ in water by test paper strips of BIB, which is fast and convenient. We prepared and characterized an array of polarity-sensitive fluorescent dyes (7 and 9a, 9b and 9c). Fluorescent dyes are based on imidazole cores, suitably functionalized with a conjugated push–pull system. The photophysical properties of the synthesized materials were elaborately investigated. These new fluorescent probes showed good fluorecence emission, higher φFl values and large Stokes shifts in different organic solvents because of their ICT nature. Furthermore, with aldehyde groups as the recognition sites, all the dyes could act as ratiometric fluorescent sensors towards methanol. The selective ratiometric fluorescence response towards methanol is due to the strong intermolecular H-bonding between the aldehyde unit and methanol. The detection limit of methanol was found to be at the ppm level. Methanol sensing was confirmed using emission spectroscopy, FTIR studies and theoretical calculations. In this paper, PS (polystyrene)/Au/ZIF-8 (zeolite imidazole framework-8) hybrid structures were synthesized for the first time as novel SERS active substrates. A series of substrates were successfully prepared by changing the Au sputtering time (5 min, 8 min, 10 min, 15 min and 20 min). When the sputtering time of Au was 10 min, the 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) molecules on the PS/Au/ZIF-8 substrate exhibited the maximum SERS enhancement. Meanwhile, the hybrid SERS substrate exhibited good SERS reproducibility, and we successfully obtained an ultrahigh enhancement factor of 1.67 × 106. Probe molecules can be easily enriched on the surface of the PS/Au/ZIF-8 composite due to their large pore volume and the high surface area of metal organic framework (MOF) materials. ZIF-8 also guides the probe molecules to the "hot-spots" to enhance the SERS signals. Moreover, the detection limit of R6G molecules achieved was 10−12 M when PS/Au(10 min)/ZIF-8 was used as a highly sensitive SERS sensor. This strategy has brought new insights to SERS research, and has also provided a new idea for the application and development of SERS in MOF-based SERS materials and ultra-sensitive analyses. In this paper, we have demonstrated the facile synthesis of stable gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using imidazolium ionic liquids (ImILs) as a stabilizer as well as a surfactant and their surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in different molecular solvents with varying dielectric properties. The preparation of AuNPs capped with N,N′-dialkyl ImILs of different chain lengths (denoted as [C4,Cn-im]Br, n = carbon number of the alkyl chain) has been investigated. With one long alkyl chain (n≥ 14), these AuNPs could be stably dispersed in solution over a month. The amphiphilic nature of the imidazolium salt dictates the stability and dispersion of these AuNPs in organic or aqueous solvents. Alkyl chain lengths (n≥ 14) and the amount of ImILs have insignificant effect on the size of AuNPs and they possess an average size of 5 nm. These ionic liquid stabilized AuNPs were exploited to examine their optical properties when exposed to various solvent systems by measuring the change in the SPR spectrum. It was seen that the position of the SPR band of AuNPs is greatly influenced by the solvents under consideration. The shift in the SPR absorption band is observed to be in the range of 520 nm to 605 nm for AuNP@[C4,C16-im]Br from nonpolar to highly polar solvents. The considerable discovery presented here is that the λSPR of the SPR shifts to the blue with the increase of carbon atom in the alcohol chain from methanol to 1-decanol. Also for polyethylene glycols (PEGs), the λSPR shifts to the blue with the increase in molecular weight from PEG 200 to PEG 600. In above both cases, the variation in SPR of AuNPs is observed according to the dielectric properties of the medium in addition to the steric factor of alcohols and PEGs during their interaction with AuNP surfaces. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have attracted considerable attention for many potential applications because they have a unique porous structure and excellent thermal and chemical stabilities. In recent years, significant efforts have been made to develop different methods for the controllable synthesis of ZIFs with desirable crystal structure and morphologies, and for decreasing the excessive amounts of organic ligands and solvents used in the synthesis process to reduce the costs and environmental impacts. This paper highlights the strategies recently reported, including the controllable synthesis of ZIFs with desirable morphologies and pore structure using a surfactant and a template in aqueous solution, the synthesis of ZIF particles and nanocrystals in base solution, and the dry gel and mechanochemical syntheses of ZIFs with minimal solvent usage. Investigation of the properties of carbene complexes is one of the most important fields of modern coordination chemistry. In this paper, we propose the convenient synthesis of NHC–nickel compounds. The 9-nickelafluorenyllithium complex reacts with imidazolium or imidazolinium salts to afford 9-nickelafluorenyl–NHC salts via ionic metathesis with very good yields (66–92%). These compounds can be isomerised at elevated temperatures to give Ni–NHC complexes with excellent yields (88–91%), probably via nickel mediated hydrogen transfer to the biphenyl moiety. In this reaction, the nickelacyclic ring itself serves as a base in the deprotonation of the carbene precursor. DFT calculations show the thermodynamic instability of the synthesized salts, with Gibbs free energy differences for 1 of −84 kJ mol−1 at 298 K and −167 kJ mol−1 at 374 K. A new series of uranium organophosphinates has been hydrothermally synthesized by using hydroxymethyl phenylphosphinic acid (HMPPA, HL) in the presence of imidazole derivatives, namely, UO2(L)2 (HMPP-U1), (UO2)2(L)4(dib) (HMPP-U2), (UO2)2(L)2(ox)(dib) (HMPP-U3), (Hbpi)2[(UO2)4(L)6(ox)2] (HMPP-U4) and (UO2)2(L)2(ox)(bpbi)2 (HMPP-U5) (ox = oxalate, dib = 1,4-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene, bpi = 1-(biphenyl-4-yl)-1H-imidazole, bpbi = 1-([1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole). HMPP-U1 was directly synthesized through hydrothermal reaction between HMPPA and UO22+, featuring a single chain structure constructed from sole UO6 tetragonal bipyramids bridged by HMPP ligands. With further introduction of imidazole derivatives, a layered structure of HMPP-U2 is formed, in which dib molecules are coordinated to uranyl centers as bidentate coligands. By adding glycol into the synthesis, a common dimeric building unit is isolated, which comprises two U-centered pentagonal bipyramids linked by an in situ generated oxalate group. In HMPP-U3, a one-dimensional structure comprising such dimeric uranyl entities and HMPP ligands is pillared by dib, forming a layered assembly. HMPP-U4 incorporates the dimeric uranyl units connected by HMPP ligands, leading to a two-dimensional arrangement with bpi as the template. HMPP-U5 features a one-dimensional structure composed of the uranyl dimers and HMPP ligands. The bpbi molecules serving as coligands are coordinated to the chain. 1-Methylimidazole (1-MIM) and 2-methylimidazole (2-MIM) are miscible in water and imidazolium based ionic liquids (ILs), and can coordinate with soft metal ions. This paper reports a novel solvent extraction process for trivalent lanthanides and yttrium from aqueous solutions into ILs, which was promoted by a hydrophilic 1-MIM or 2-MIM. Slope analysis confirmed that MIM in ILs formed a 1 : 1 complex with La3+ and Y3+ and a 1 : 4 complex with Eu3+ and Lu3+, depending on the atomic number of the metal and the metal-ligand interactions that have been characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and ESI-MS. The effect of nitrate concentration on the extraction of lanthanides with 1-MIM in ILs was analysed. It indicated that nitrate anions were involved in the extraction process. Under the same conditions, the extraction of lanthanides with MIM into n-pentanol was carried out. The extractability was by far lower than that obtained in ILs. Both cationic exchange and neutral solvation mechanisms occurred in ILs and only the neutral solvation mechanism occurred in n-pentanol, which were demonstrated by the extraction tests and the structure of extracted species determined by ESI-MS. The competitive extraction in ILs showed good selectivity for lanthanides compared to alkali metals and alkaline earth cations. After extraction, lanthanides could be stripped very easily from the ionic liquid phase with dilute nitric acid. From the temperature dependence data, the thermodynamic parameter values (ΔH, ΔS and ΔG) were calculated. In this paper, a kind of aminopropyl imidazole-modified silica sorbent was synthesized and used as a solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent for the determination of carboxylic acid compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The resultant aminopropyl imidazole-modified silica sorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and elemental analysis (EA) to ensure the successful binding of aminopropyl imidazole on the surface of silica gel. Then the aminopropyl imidazole-modified silica sorbent served as a SPE sorbent for the enrichment of carboxylic acid compounds and PAHs. The new sorbent exhibited high extraction efficiency towards the tested compounds and the results show that such a sorbent can offer multiple intermolecular interactions: electrostatic, π–π, and hydrophobic interactions. Several parameters affecting the extraction recovery, such as the pH of sample solution, the pH of eluent, the solubility of eluent, the volume of eluent, and sample loading, were also investigated. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method was applied to the analysis of four carboxylic acid compounds and four PAHs in environmental water samples. Good linearities were obtained for all the tested compounds with R2 larger than 0.9903. The limits of detection were found to be in the range of 0.0065–0.5 μg L−1. This paper reports for the first time in situ crystal growth of ZIF-8 on electrospun polyurethane (PU) nanofibers. In SEM images, continuous and compact ZIF-8 nanocrystals grow along electrospun PU nanofibers. The highest loading capacity of ZIF-8 on PU reaches 63%. By N2 adsorption-desorption, ZIF-8-PU shows a high surface area of 566 cm2 g-1. Combining the good flexibility of PU with the high adsorption properties of ZIF-8, ZIF-8-PU can be easily tailored into clothes or other forms as adsorption material. Furthermore, the gas adsorption ability of ZIF-8-PU was measured for H2, N2, O2 and CO2 at room temperature (20 °C) under different pressure gradients. The results show that the adsorption capacity of ZIF-8-PU for CO2 is nearly 11 times that for H2, 50 times that for O2 and 75 times that for N2 at 800 mmHg. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of novel ionic liquids comprising two asymmetric phosphate-derived anions, namely dimethyl phosphorothioate and dimethyl phosphoroselenoate, and several imidazolium and non-imidazolium-based cations was prepared viaa facile synthetic route. Thermal degradation was studied by dynamic thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealing a slightly higher stability of the imidazolium ionic liquids and an overall low thermal stability for the phosphoroselenoate salts. Long-term moisture sorption analysis showed correlation with the polarity of the cation and differences in absorption and desorption kinetics. Finally, a Eucalyptus globuluskraft paper grade pulp was dissolved and subsequently regenerated to assess the degradation of the various molecular weight fractions by size exclusion chromatography. This paper reports on a detailed study of the influence of salinity on the biological activity of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chlorides on two green algae Oocystis submarinaand Chlorella vulgaris, one diatom Cyclotella meneghinianaand one blue-green alga Geitlerinema amphibium. All these organisms inhabit the Baltic Sea, an environment naturally varying greatly in salinity. The toxicity effects of ILs towards cyanobacterial and algal organisms were tested in fresh water and in water of four different salinities—8, 16, 24 and 32 PSU—reflecting the whole range encountered in the Baltic Sea. Increasing the salinity was found to exert a significant influence on ionic liquid toxicity in all cases. The lower toxicity is probably due to the reduced permeability of ionic liquid cations through the algal cell walls. Higher chloride concentrations offer a good ion-pairing environment for imidazolium cations, which therefore compete with hydroxyl or silanol functional groups in cell-wall structures. The results of this work indicate that at higher salinities algal growth is inhibited to a significantly lesser extent. With the same IL concentration, the toxicity decreases by eight–ten times in the algae or about three times in the cyanobacterium in the 0–32 PSU salinity range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports on an investigation into the toxicity of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) towards two green algae (Chlorella vulgarisand Oocystis submarina) characteristic of freshwater and brackish environments, as well as two brackish and marine diatoms (Cyclotella meneghinianaand Skeletonema marinoi). The test kit of IL compounds consisted of five 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chlorides (from -ethyl to -decyl) for evaluating the expected alkyl chain length effect, together with 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, dicyanamide, trifluoromethanesulfonate, methyl sulfate an α-methyl[poly(oxy-1,2-ethanediyl)]sulfate for investigating the influence of the anion on IL toxicity towards various algal species. A pronounced alkyl chain effect was confirmed with all the organisms studied. EC50values were linearly very well correlated with the number of carbon atoms in the IL alkyl chains. The results indicate that diatoms are far more sensitive than green algae to ILs. Cell size also plays an important part in the intoxication process: a tenfold difference in cell size results in a 100% more sensitive reaction to ionic liquids in both the green algae and diatoms. No significant differences were observed between alkylimidazolium salts and an alkylpyridinium compound of similar lipophilicity. It was also found that the use of tetrafluoroborate and trifluoromethanesulfonate as counteranions in the IL structure gave rise to the most pronounced toxic effects in comparison with the other anions tested. In the case of tetrafluoroborate this is probably caused by the potential hydrolysis of this entity, which leads to the formation of fluoride and a further increase in toxicity. Whereas in the case of trifluoromethanesulfonate it is likely caused by relatively high lipophilicity of this anion, additionally known to be strongly associated with alkylimidazolium cations, that in turn may enhance cell wall penetration. Responsive photonic crystals have attracted extensive attention due to their features of transforming external stimuli into a variation of optical signals or structural colors. In recent years, the accumulation of heavy metal ions has become a serious threat to human health and the environment. Thus, a simple and rapid method for the accurate detection of metal ions is of great importance. Herein, an imidazole-based-silica inverse opal photonic crystal (IOPC) sensor is prepared. Three different particle sizes of SiO2 photonic crystals were used as templates for the preparation of an IOPC. The results show that the template presents a high specific surface area and interconnected nanopores. When the nanopores adsorb copper ions, the functional monomer imidazole will chelate with copper ions to form a flat quadrilateral structure. Then the nanopores of the IOPC shrink, which will result in the red shifting of the diffraction peak to complete the visual response sensing. When immersed in different concentrations of metal ions, the structural color of the IOPC changes, making it a visual sensor. In addition, it is proved that the imidazole-modified IOPC is specifically responsive to Cu2+, and the structural color of the sensor will shift from green to yellow after sensing. The detection limit is as low as 1 × 10−6 mol L−1, and the maximum offset of the diffraction peak can reach 50 nm. Therefore, the IOPC prepared here provides an ideal platform for the fast and high selective detection of Cu2+, and it has potential applications in the rapid detection of other heavy metal ions. Lignocellulosic biomass composite fibers (southern yellow pine and bagasse) were successfully prepared directly from the ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([C2mim]OAc) with a dry-jet wet spinning process using short dissolution times (10–30 min) and temperatures above the glass transition temperature of lignin. Fibers could not be spun at all from solutions of pine dissolved using previously reported dissolution methods (110 °C, 16 h), while bagasse fibers spun using the higher temperature/shorter time method were stronger than those obtained using the lower temperature/longer time method.
