Various types of AlfvĂ©n eigenmodes (AEs) have been destabilized by fast ions over a broad frequency range from ∼80 kHz to ∼700 kHz in a series of JET experiments in mixed Dâ€"3He plasmas heated with the three-ion ICRF scenario (2020 Nocente et al Nucl. Fusion 60 124006). In this paper, we identify the radial localization of AEs using an X-mode reflectometer, a multiline interferometer and soft x-ray diagnostics. The analysis is focused on the most representative example of these measurements in JET pulse #95691, where two different types of AlfvĂ©n cascade (AC) eigenmodes were observed. These modes originate from the presence of a local minimum of the safety factor q min. In addition to ACs with frequencies below the frequency of toroidal AlfvĂ©n eigenmodes (TAEs), ACs with frequencies above the TAE frequency were destabilized by energetic ions. Both low- (f ≈ 80â€"180 kHz) and high-frequency (f ≈ 330â€"450 kHz) ACs were localized in the central regions of the plasma. The characteristics of the high-frequency ACs are investigated in detail numerically using HELENA, CSCAS and MISHKA codes. The resonant conditions for the mode excitation are found to be determined by passing ions of rather high energy of several hundred keV and similar to those established in JT-60U with negative-ion-based NBI (2005 Takechi et al Phys. Plasmas 12 082509). The computed radial mode structure is found to be consistent with the experimental measurements. In contrast to low-frequency ACs observed most often, the frequency of the high-frequency ACs decreases with time as the value of q min decreases. This feature is in a qualitative agreement with the analytical model of the high-frequency ACs in Breizman et al (2003 Phys. Plasmas 10 3649). The high-frequency AC could be highly relevant for future ITER and fusion reactor plasmas dominated by ∼MeV energetic ions, including a significant population of passing fast ions. Organic–inorganic metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have recently been receiving a lot of attention due to their newfound application in optoelectronic devices, including perovskite solar cells (PSCs) which have reached power conversion efficiencies as high as 25.5%. However, the fundamental mechanisms in PSCs, including the correlation of degradation with the excellent optoelectrical properties of the perovskite absorbers, are poorly understood. In this paper, we have explored synchrotron-based soft X-ray characterization as an effective technique for the compositional analysis of MHP thin films. Most synchrotron-based studies used for investigating MHPs so far are based on hard X-rays (5–10 keV) which include various absorption edges (Pb L-edge, I L-edge, Br K-edge, etc.) but are not suited for the analysis of the organic component in these materials. In order to be sensitive to a maximum number of elements, we have employed soft X-ray-based scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) as a spectro-microscopy technique for the characterization of MHPs. We examined its sensitivity to iodine and organic components, aging, or oxidation by-products in MHPs to make sure that our suggested method is suitable for studying MHPs. Furthermore, methylammonium triiodide with different deposition ratios of PbI2 and CH3NH3I (MAI), and different thicknesses, were characterized for chemical inhomogeneity at the nanoscale by STXM. Through these measurements, we demonstrate that STXM is very sensitive to chemical composition and homogeneity in MHPs. The stability, electronic structures, work function, and optical properties of single-layer g-C3N4 and X/ g-C3N4 (X = g-C3 N4 , AlN and GaN) heterostructures were investigated using plane-wave density functional theory with ultra-soft pseudopotentials. The results show that the lattice mismatch ratio and lattice mismatch energy of X/ g-C3N4 heterojunction are very low, indicating that X/ g-C3N4 heterojunction has excellent stability. Compared with the single-layer g-C3N4, the bandgap of the X/ g-C3N4 all reduces, and the peaks and troughs of the density of states greatly improves. At the same time, X/ g-C3N4 has a redshift, which leds to an increase in the number of electrons in the excited state, making electronic transitions easier. It shows that the heterojunction is beneficial to improves the response-ability of the system to visible light, and effectively improves the photocatalytic activity of the system. Further calculations show that the work function of X/ g-C3N4 reduces and a built-in electric field is formed at the interface, which inhibits the recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. This is of great benefit to the migration of carriers and the improvement of photocatalytic ability. Among them, the GaN/ g-C3 N4 heterojunction has the smallest work function, the potential difference at the interface formed a built-in electric field and the redshift is the most obvious. It can be inferred that the GaN/ g-C3 N4 heterojunction has the best photocatalytic activity. In this paper, we present multiwavelength observations of the triggering of a failed-eruptive M-class flare from active region NOAA 11302 and investigate the possible reasons for the associated failed eruption. Photospheric observations and nonlinear force-free field extrapolated coronal magnetic field revealed that the flaring region had a complex quadrupolar configuration with a preexisting coronal nullpoint situated above the core field. Prior to the onset of the M-class flare, we observed multiple periods of small-scale flux enhancements in GOES and RHESSI soft X-ray observations from the location of the nullpoint. The preflare configuration and evolution reported here are similar to the configurations presented in the breakout model, but at much lower coronal heights. The core of the flaring region was characterized by the presence of two flux ropes in a double-decker configuration. During the impulsive phase of the flare, one of the two flux ropes initially started erupting, but resulted in a failed eruption. Calculation of the magnetic decay index revealed a saddle-like profile where the decay index initially increased to the torus-unstable limits within the heights of the flux ropes, but then decreased rapidly and reached negative values, which was most likely responsible for the failed eruption of the initially torus-unstable flux rope. A single-order diffraction transmission grating named spectroscopic photon sieve (SPS) for soft x-ray region is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. The SPS consists of many circular pinholes located randomly, and can realize both free-standing diffractions and the suppression of higher-order differations. In this paper, the basic concept, numerical simulations, and calibration results of a 1000-lines/mm SPS for soft x-ray synchrotron radiation are presented. As predicted by theoretical calculations, the calibration results of a 1000-lines/mm SPS verify that the higher-order diffractions can be significantly suppressed along the symmetry axis. With the current nanofabrication technique, the SPS can potentially have a higher line density, and can be widely used in synchrotron radiation, laser-induced plasma diagnostics, and astrophysics. MAX IV is a fourth‐generation, or diffraction‐limited, synchrotron light source with a number of state‐of‐the‐art beamlines. The performance of a beamline is, to a high degree, set by the energy resolution it can achieve, which in turn is governed to a large extent by the monochromator. During the design phase of a monochromator, the mechanical requirements must be fully understood and met with margin. During commissioning, the performance must be verified and optimized. In this paper, six soft X‐ray monochromators at MAX IV beamlines (Bloch, Veritas, HIPPIE, SPECIES, FinEstBeAMS and SoftiMAX) are examined with a focus on their resolving power, energy range and the time required to change measurement range, as those parameters are dependent on each other. The monochromators have a modern commercial design, planned and developed in close collaboration with the vendors. This paper aims to present the current status of the commissioning at MAX IV with emphasis on elucidating the mechanical limitations on the performance of the monochromators. The linear depolarization ratio (LDR) is a key parameter used in remote sensing to distinguish particle types. The LDR of the soot fractal model is uneasy to match the measured values. In this paper we used three-dimensional (3D) synchrotron soft X-ray tomography (SXT) for the 3D reconstruction of the toluene-burning soot particles and used discrete dipole approximation to calculate optical properties. The obtained results showed the 3D reconstructed soot particles can efficiently reproduce the measured LDR. The results of this study will encourage us to develop a new morphology model, completely different from the traditional fractal model, for bare soot based on 3D reconstruction. We developed a 2-mm-thick CdTe double-sided strip detector (CdTe-DSD) with a 250 μ m strip pitch, which has high spatial resolution with a uniform large imaging area of 10 cm 2 and high energy resolution with high detection efficiency in tens to hundreds keV. The detector can be employed in a wide variety of fields for quantitative observations of hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray with spectroscopic imaging, for example, space observation, nuclear medicine, and non-destructive elemental analysis. This detector is thicker than the 0.75-mm-thick one previously developed by a factor of ∼ 2.7, thus providing better detection efficiency for hard X-rays and soft gamma rays. The increased thickness could potentially enhance bias-induced polarization if we do not apply sufficient bias and if we do not operate at a low temperature, but the polarization is not evident in our detector when a high voltage of 500 V is applied to the CdTe diode and the temperature is maintained at − 20 °C during one-day experiments. The "Depth Of Interaction" (DOI) dependence due to the CdTe diode's poor carrier-transport property is also more significant, resulting in much DOI information while complicated detector responses such as charge sharings or low-energy tails that exacerbate the loss in the energy resolution. In this paper, we developed 2-mm-thick CdTe-DSDs, studied their response, and evaluated their energy resolution, spatial resolution, and uniformity. We also constructed a theoretical model to understand the detector response theoretically, resulting in reconstructing the DOI with an accuracy of 100 μ m while estimating the carrier-transport property. First, we evaluated the energy resolution using 22Na, 133Ba, and 57Co reconstructing the DOI effect from the energy correlation on both the anode and cathode sides. We obtained an energy resolution of 4.3 keV (FWHM) at 356 keV. Second, we formulated a theoretical detector-response model that reproduced the experimental data. Using the model, we determined the mobility-lifetime products of carriers μ τ e , h = (4 ± 1) × 1 0 − 3 , (1. 15 ± 0. 05) × 1 0 − 4 [cm 2 /V] with the space charge density of n s p = − 6. 0 × 1 0 10 [1/cm − 3 ] and then reconstructed the DOI with an accuracy of 100 μ m. Finally, we evaluated the spatial resolution and demonstrated to resolve patterns of 250- μ m -width slits with an X-ray test chart. We found no positional variation in the detector response. A transmission diffraction grating is a useful tool for studying spectra in the soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet range, created by the radiation of small–sized sources, such as laser produced plasma, vacuum spark, Z-pinch, X-pinch, etc. In almost all such experiments, a distance between the source and the grating is much larger than the size of the source, so the incident wave can be considered plane with sufficient accuracy, the distance from the recording detector to the grating is also much larger than the size of the grating and, therefore, Fraunhofer diffraction takes place here and the presence of a focusing element is not required. The interpretation of the results obtained using such a grating is difficult due to the fact that different diffraction orders overlap in the registered diffraction pattern. Therefore, there is a problem of reconstruction the true spectrum from an experimental diffraction pattern. In this paper, this problem is solved by approximating the function of the radiation intensity recorded on the diffraction pattern by a polynomial. In this case, due to the properties of the transmission diffraction grating, the desired function describing the spectrum being reconstructed is also a polynomial, which can be calculated according to the developed algorithm. Both the direct conversion of the spectrum into the diffraction pattern and the reverse conversion of the diffraction pattern into the spectrum do not change the radius of convergence, since multiplication is carried out by multipliers uniformly bounded from above and below. It follows from this that minor errors in the definition of the function describing the diffraction pattern cannot lead to significant errors in the reconstructed spectrum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Laser–plasma accelerators (LPAs) have great potential to realize a compact X-ray free-electron laser (FEL), which is limited by the beam properties currently. Two-color high-intensity X-ray FEL provides a powerful tool for probing ultrafast dynamic systems. In this paper, we present a simple and feasible method to generate a two-color X-ray FEL pulse based on an LPA beam. In this scheme, time-dependent mismatch along the bunch is generated and manipulated by the designed lattice system, enabling FEL lasing at different wavelength within two undulator sections. The time separation between the two pulses can be precisely adjusted by varying the time-delay chicane. Numerical simulations show that two-color soft X-ray FELs with gigawatt-level peak power and femtosecond duration can be generated, which confirm the validity and feasibility of the scheme. We present a method to explore the effect of fluorescence on X‐ray attenuation measurements obtained from X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). We use the X‐ray extended range technique‐like method (XERT‐like). The experimental setup includes different sized apertures to control the number of secondary X‐rays entering the detector. Comparison of attenuation measurements produced with different aperture combination permit investigation of the effect of fluorescence radiation. In this work, fluorescence has a large impact on the attenuation measurements of thick zinc foils. The correction is energy‐dependent and sample thickness‐dependent and changes the structure and relative amplitudes of oscillations in the near‐edge region. Correction for this systematic is important for absolute measurement, for edge‐jump and edge characterization, and for near‐edge structure and amplitudes. A significant background scattering due to zinc fluorescence from the beamline optics was identified and treated for the first time. The model theory fits the experimental measurements well. The resulting correction is most significant for thicker foils with the 50 μm sample experiencing a shift in attenuation of up to 15.5% for the largest aperture while the 25 and 10 μm samples saw corrections of up to 0.153 and 0.00639% respectively. The standard error from the dispersion and variance was reduced by up to 50.5% after the correction for the 50 μm sample. This enables high‐accuracy data and theoretical and experimental analysis to below 0.03% accuracy. The technology is advanced. There is a cost in preparation and measurement time of less than a factor of two, and the principles are clear and can be routinely implemented on any beamline. Young solar-type stars are known to be strong X-ray emitters and their X-ray spectra have been widely studied. X-rays from the central star may play a crucial role in the thermodynamics and chemistry of the circumstellar material as well as in the atmospheric evolution of young planets. In this paper, we present model spectra based on spectral parameters derived from the observations of young stars in the Orion nebula cluster from the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP). The spectra are then used to calculate new photoevaporation prescriptions that can be used in disc and planet population synthesis models. Our models clearly show that disc wind mass loss rates are controlled by the stellar luminosity in the soft (⁠|$100\, \mathrm{eV}$| to |$1\, \mathrm{keV}$|⁠) X-ray band. New analytical relations are provided for the mass loss rates and profiles of photoevaporative winds as a function of the luminosity in the soft X-ray band. The agreement between observed and predicted transition disc statistics moderately improved using the new spectra, but the observed population of strongly accreting large cavity discs can still not be reproduced by these models. Furthermore, our models predict a population of non-accreting transition discs that are not observed. This highlights the importance of considering the depletion of millimetre-sized dust grains from the outer disc, which is a likely reason why such discs have not been detected yet. Charge exchange has been recognized as a primary source of soft X-ray emission in many astrophysical outflow environments, including cometary and planetary exospheres impacted by the solar wind. Some models have been set up by using different data collections of charge-exchange cross-sections. However, multiple-electron transfer has not been included in these models. In this paper, we set up a charge-exchange model with the inclusion of double-electron capture (DEC), and make a detailed investigation of this process on X-ray emissions of highly charged carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and neon ions by using available experimental cross-sections. We also study the effect of different n- selective cross-sections on soft X-ray emission by using available experimental n -distributions. This work reveals that DEC enhancement on line intensity is linearly proportional to the ratio of ion abundance in the solar wind. It is more obvious for soft X-rays from carbon ions (C4+) in collision with CO2, and the enhancement on line intensity can be up to 53 per cent with typical ion abundances [ Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE)] in the solar wind. The synthetic spectra with parameters from the Ulysses mission for the solar wind reveal velocity dependence, target dependence, as well as the non-negligible contribution from the DEC. In this paper, structural, optical and electronic properties of ZnO nanoparticles were investigated with the variation in the annealing temperature. X-ray diffraction, High-Resolution Transmission Electron Spectroscopy, Absorption spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy and Soft X-ray spectroscopy techniques were invoked to investigate and gauge the effect of annealing temperature on these properties. Intact Hexagonal Wurtzite phase of the nanoparticles with increasing crystallinity and spherical shape with particle size between 20 nm and 23 nm [using both X-ray Diffractometer (XRD) and High-resolution Transmission of electron microscopy (HRTEM)], blue shift of absorption peak from 372 nm to 366 nm and Optical Band Gap from 3.24 eV to 3.17 eV (UV-Vis-NIR), narrowing of E 2 H mode in Raman Spectra; all indicated enhanced crystallinity with increased annealing temperature. Effects produced by the sole variable such as annealing temperature on the indicative parameters in a definite order catapult the annealing conditions as a significant candidate for customized properties. To have a deeper insight at the electronic levels, Synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies of ZnO nanoparticles were undertaken. The analysis of Soft XAS spectra showed the change in number of O 2 p and Zn 4 p unoccupied states with increasing particle size and crystallinity of ZnO nanoparticles for varying annealing temperature. Modelling plasma-based seeded soft X-ray lasers from the creation of the plasma to the propagation of a femtosecond high-order harmonic (HOH) seed throughout several millimetres of inhomogeneous plasma is a complex challenge. Different spatio-temporal scales from the hydrodynamic evolution of the plasma (hundreds of micrometres and nanoseconds) to the propagation of pulses through the plasma (millimetres and tens of picoseconds), electron collisions (picoseconds or even shorter) and the evolution of the envelope of the seeded HOH (tens of femtoseconds) must be tackled in order to fully understand these systems. In this paper, we will present the multi-scale computational paradigm that we have used to perform a full ab initio simulation of a dense, Ni-like Krypton plasma amplifier of soft X-rays. In this paper, we introduce two tempered linear and non-linear time series models, namely, an autoregressive tempered fractionally integrated moving average (ARTFIMA) with α -stable noise and ARTFIMA with generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) noise (ARTFIMA-GARCH). We provide estimation procedures for the processes and explain the connection between ARTFIMA and their tempered continuous-time counterparts. Next, we demonstrate an application of the processes to modeling of heavy-tailed data from solar flare soft x-ray emissions. To this end, we study the solar flare data during a period of solar minimum, which occurred most recently in July, August, and September 2017. We use a two-state hidden Markov model to classify the data into two states (lower and higher activity) and to extract stationary trajectories. We do an end-to-end analysis and modeling of the solar flare data using both ARTFIMA and ARTFIMA-GARCH models and their non-tempered counterparts. We show through visual inspection and statistical tests that the ARTFIMA and ARTFIMA-GARCH models describe the data better than the ARFIMA and ARFIMA-GARCH, especially in the second state, which justifies that tempered processes can serve as the state-of-the-art approach to model signals originating from a power-law source with long memory effects. Symbiotic stars are long-period interacting binaries where the compact object, most commonly a white dwarf, is embedded in the dense stellar wind of an evolved companion star. Ultraviolet and soft X-ray emission of the accretion disc and the nuclear-burning white dwarf plays a major role in shaping the ionization balance of the surrounding wind material, giving rise to the rich line emission. In this paper, we employ two-dimensional photoionization calculations based on the cloudy code to study the ionization state of the circumbinary material in symbiotic systems and to predict their emission-line spectra. Our simulations are parametrized via the orbital parameters of the binary and the wind mass-loss rate of the donor star, while the mass accretion rate, temperature and luminosity of the white dwarf are computed self-consistently. We explore the parameter space of symbiotic binaries and compute luminosities of various astrophysically important emission lines. The line ratios are compared with traditional diagnostic diagrams used to distinguish symbiotic binaries from other types of sources, and it is shown how the binary system parameters shape these diagrams. In the significant part of the parameter space, the wind material is nearly fully ionized, except for the 'shadow' behind the donor star, so the white dwarf emission is typically freely escaping the system. The paper presents the results of experiments with the compression of the plasma of double multiwire arrays of mixed composition and the generation of powerful soft X-ray radiation (SXR) pulses carried out on the powerful electrophysical facility Angara-5-1 at a discharge current of up to 3 MA. Based on the latest experimental data on the production rate of different plasmas (in μg/(cm2 ns)) [1] and on specificities of the dynamics of plasma compression in nested arrays [2], a nested array was designed, which makes it possible to obtain a high SXR peak power in comparison with the optimal (in terms of radiation power) designs of single and nested tungsten wire arrays. By selecting substances with different plasma production rates, it was possible to reduce the level of magnetohydrodynamic instabilities at the final stage of compression of the inner array. This made it possible to reduce the radiation pulse duration and increase the SXR power. Using implosion of nested arrays of mixed composition, consisting of plastic fibers and tungsten wires, shorter and more powerful SXR pulses with a maximum peak power ~10 TW with a pulse duration FWHM ~ 5 ns were obtained, compared to the parameters of SXR pulses upon compression of single tungsten arrays: ~ 5 TW and FWHM ~ 10 ns. Thus, we have shown the possibility of a twofold increase in the peak SXR power during compression of nested arrays under the conditions of our experiments by optimizing their design. One of the results of this work was finding the optimal parameters of the nested arrays and the prediction of the peak SXR power for experiments at powerful electrophysical facilities, differing from with substantially different levels of discharge current, 4–26 MA (Angara-5-1, Julong-1, and ZR). θ Car is a bright well studied B0 type star in a close binary (P orb = 2.2 d) with an unseen companion. The system has enjoyed extensive spectroscopic characterization at multiple wavelengths, revealing narrow X-ray lines, a soft X-ray tail, and chemical peculiarities. The star was recently observed in high-cadence photometric time-series by the NASA TESS satellite. In this paper, we investigate the photometric variability and demonstrate that it is likely associated with surface brightness inhomogeneities rather than orbital modulation. We investigate the potential distribution of surface features required to produce the observed variability, and report a new rotational period of P rot = 2.2034 d to be commensurate with the orbital period. Metals form an essential part of the Universe at all scales. Without metals we would not exist, and the Universe would look completely different. Metals are primarily produced via nuclear processes in stars, and spread out through winds or explosions, which pollute the surrounding space. The wanderings of metals in-and-out of astronomical objects are crucial in determining their own evolution and thus that of the Universe as a whole. Detecting metals and assessing their relative and absolute abundances and energetics can thus be used to trace the evolution of these cosmic components. The scope of this paper is to highlight the most important open astrophysical problems that will be central in the next decades and for which a deep understanding of the Universe's wandering metals, their physical and kinematical states, and their chemical composition represents the only viable solution. We report on the design and implementation of a new system used to characterize the energy-dependent x-ray transmission curve, Θ(E), through filters used in high-energy density physics diagnostics. Using an Amptek X-123-CdTe x-ray spectrometer together with a partially depleted silicon surface barrier detector, both the energy spectrum and total emission of an x-ray source have been accurately measured. By coupling these detectors with a custom PROTO-XRD x-ray source with interchangeable cathodes, accurate characterizations of Θ(E) for filters of varying materials and thicknesses have been obtained. The validity of the technique has been confirmed by accurately reproducing areal densities for high-purity filters with known x-ray transmission properties. A forward modeling technique is developed for determining the characteristic features of observed MHD modes from the line-of-sight data of the soft x-ray (SXR) tomography diagnostics in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. In particular, forward modeling is used to evaluate the poloidal mode numbers m, radial location, poloidal rotation direction and ballooning character of the MHD modes. The poloidal mode structures have been modeled by the radially localized Gaussian-shaped emission regions rotating along the magnetic surfaces. In the present study the cases of rigid-shape emission regions and flexible emission regions are modeled. Various mode phase velocity dependences on the magnetic surface position are simulated. The modeled phase dynamics of line-integrated oscillations and the distribution of oscillation amplitudes are compared with the experimental signals of the SXR cameras which observe the plasma at various viewing angles in the poloidal cross-section. Application of this technique enables describing of the 1–50 kHz modes. In particular, in the discharge W7X-PID 20180918.045 three identified branches with the poloidal mode numbers m= 8, m= 10 and m= 11 localized at ρ ≈ 0.3 are rotating in the clockwise poloidal direction. Z-pinches have been explored as efficient soft x-ray sources for many years. To optimize x-ray emission, various z-pinch configurations were tested. This paper presents data obtained with a hybrid gas-puff z-pinch imploding onto on-axis wires on a microsecond, multi-megaampere GIT-12 generator. In our previous experiments, the hybrid gas puff, i.e., an inner deuterium gas puff surrounded by an outer hollow cylindrical plasma shell, was used to produce energetic protons, deuterons, and neutrons up to 60 MeV [Klir et al., New J. Phys. 22, 103036 (2020)]. The behavior of the hybrid gas-puff z-pinch on GIT-12 was interpreted as a high-density plasma opening switch with a microsecond conduction time, 3 MA conduction current, nanosecond opening, and up to 60 MV stand-off voltage. These properties can be employed to transfer the current into an on-axis load with a high rise rate. In the recent experiments on GIT-12, we therefore placed single or multiple aluminum wires on the axis of the hybrid gas-puff z-pinch. Before a current sheath arrived at the axis, a coronal plasma was seen around the wire. A rapid increase in x-ray radiation was observed when the coronal plasma imploded onto the axis. The coronal plasma implosion resulted in a long (2 cm), narrow (∼mm) column radiating in the Al K-shell lines. With the single Al wire of 80 μm diameter, the K-shell x-ray output reached 5.5 ± 0.8 kJ in a 0.6 ± 0.1 TW peak power and 7 ± 1 ns pulse. The higher K-shell yield of 12 ± 2 kJ and peak K-shell power of 0.7 ± 0.1 TW were achieved with four 38 μm diameter Al wires. (Their cross section formed the corners of a square with 1 mm side.) The presence of the wires on the axis significantly suppressed ion acceleration and neutron production. Deuterium-deuterium (DD) neutron yields of about 1.2 × 1011 were 20 times smaller than the yields produced in shots without any wire. The DD neutron yield was increased up to 4.5 × 1011 when the Al wire was replaced by a fiber from deuterated polyethylene. We apply the recently developed formalism by Kosower, Maybee and O'Connell (KMOC) [12] to analyse the soft electromagnetic and soft gravitational radiation emitted by particles without spin in D ≥ 4 dimensions. We use this formalism in conjunction with quantum soft theorems to derive radiative electro-magnetic and gravitational fields in low frequency expansion and upto next to leading order in the coupling. We show that in all dimensions, the classical limit of sub-leading soft (photon and graviton) theorems is consistent with the classical soft theorems proved by Sen et al. in a series of papers. In particular in [11] Saha, Sahoo and Sen proved classical soft theorems for electro-magnetic and gravitational radiation in D = 4 dimensions. For the class of scattering processes that can be analyzed using KMOC formalism, we show that the classical limit of quantum soft theorems is consistent with the D = 4 classical soft theorems, paving the way for their proof from scattering amplitudes. A numerical study of the effect of betatron oscillations on the second harmonic generation in free‐electron lasers (FELs) is presented. Analytical expressions for the effective coupling strength factors are derived that clearly distinguish all contributions in subharmonics and each polarization of the radiation. A three‐dimensional time‐dependent numerical FEL code that takes into account the main FEL effects and the individual contribution of each electron to the second harmonic generation is presented. Also, the X‐ and Y‐polarizations of the second harmonic are analyzed. The second harmonic was detected in experiments at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) Low Energy Undulator Test Line (LEUTL) and Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) in the soft X‐ray regime. The approach presented in the article can be useful for a comprehensive study and diagnostics of XFELs. In the paper, the LCLS and Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X‐ray Free‐Electron Laser (PAL‐XFEL) experiments are modeled. The simulation results are in a good agreement with the experimental data. X‐ray absorption is a sensitive and versatile tool for chemical speciation. However, when high doses are used, the absorbed energy can change the composition, amount and structure of the native material, thereby changing the aspects of the absorption process on which speciation is based. How can one calculate the dose when X‐ray irradiation affects the chemistry and changes the amount of the material? This paper presents an assumption‐free approach which can retrieve from the experimental data all dose‐sensitive parameters – absorption coefficients, composition (elemental molecular units), material densities – which can then be used to calculate accurate doses as a function of irradiation. This approach is illustrated using X‐ray damage to a solid film of a perfluorosulfonic acid fluoropolymer in a scanning transmission soft X‐ray microscope. This new approach is compared against existing dose models which calculate the dose by making simplifying assumptions regarding the material quantity, density and chemistry. While the detailed measurements used in this approach go beyond typical methods to experimental analytical X‐ray absorption, they provide a more accurate quantitation of radiation dose, and help to understand mechanisms of radiation damage. The work describes a novel approach to the design of a fast, multichannel measurement system for plasma diagnostics [A. Wojenski et al., Fusion Eng. Des. 123, 727 (2016)]. Its main scope is to provide measurements of soft X-ray (SXR) emission during plasma phenomena at the W-Environment in Steady-state Tokamak (WEST), especially for monitoring and tracing tungsten impurities. This paper describes the vertical Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) camera installed at the WEST [M. Chernyshova et al., J. Instrument. 10, P10022 (2015)]. The designed GEM detector readout board has more than 100 channels, resulting in high-performance requirements for the data acquisition and processing system. The novel system construction approach is that the unit works on the raw signals providing a high quality of the data, especially in the scope of pileup effect analysis. In the case of doubtful results, the source data can be easily reviewed offline. The data selection and transmission are done in Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) on the custom boards with the custom Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)-Express Gen2 switch that allows us to register signals from multiple FPGAs and then process the data by complex algorithms [G. Kasprowicz et al., J. Fusion Energy 38, 480 (2019)]. The firmware is replaceable and different working modes can be applied (some under verification): global trigger mode, high-speed data serialization, and extended signal registration. Low level optimized central processing unit software for data readout was also designed [P. Linczuk et al., J. Instrum. 14, C05001 (2019)]. The installation of the system is described due to complex system components' distribution. The first results of the successful acquisition of the plasma at the WEST are discussed. Abstract The interlayer plays a crucial role in improving the properties of many extremely important magnetic materials and devices by regulating the magnetic exchange coupling, while it is still not fully understood in a quantitative way. The main obstacle is that there is still no effective way to characterize quantitatively the ferromagnetic exchange coupling (FEC) strength after inserting the interlayer. In this paper, a rationally designed hard/interlayer/soft layered film is used to study the interlayer effects. It is demonstrated that the magnetic properties of nanocomposite magnets can be effectively enhanced through the modification of interface. Here a new concept, using the nucleation field H ns of soft phase as a "detector" to directly and quantitatively characterize/measure the FEC strength across interface and interlayer, is put forward. It is applied to address the dependence of FEC strength on thickness of nonmagnetic Cr and rare earth-rich phase interlayers. The detailed, distinguishing and typical decay behavior and length of FEC strength for these interlayers are successfully resolved for the first time. The new conception and experimental results get also strongly supported by the theoretical calculation. The nature or mechanism of exchange coupling between ferromagnetic grains or layers after adding the nonmagnetic interlayer is identified by using the hard/interlayer/soft layered film as a model system. Our results demonstrate the validity for characterizing/measuring quantitatively the FEC strength across different interlayer materials via strategy established in this work. To address the issue of white noise at partial discharge (PD) ultra high frequency (UHF) signal in gas insulated substation (GIS), this paper develops an external sensor and proposes new empirical mode decomposition (EMD) denoising method based on autocorrelation coefficient and similar wavelet soft threshold. Four types of typical GIS defects at the PD UHF signal were obtained through experiment. The autocorrelation coefficient of intrinsic mode functions (IMF) components at the PD UHF signal was computed, the cut-off point between the noise signal dominant mode and the UHF signal dominant mode was found. The similar wavelet soft threshold denoising was performed on the signal which is dominated by the noise signal, all the UHF signals were finally reconstructed. The signal-to-noise ratio computed by the proposed denoising method was compared with the one computed by the wavelet denoising method, the results shows that the proposed denoising method in this paper is more effective than the wavelet denoising method. Context. High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy has advanced our understanding of the hot Universe by revealing physical properties like kinematics, temperature, and abundances of the astrophysical plasmas. Despite technical and scientific achievements, the lack of scientific products at a level higher than count spectra is hampering complete scientific exploitation of high-quality data. This paper introduces the Catalog of Ionized Emission Lines Observed by the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (CIELO-RGS) onboard the XMM-Newton space observatory. Aims. The CIELO-RGS catalog aims to facilitate the exploitation of emission features in the public RGS spectra archive. In particular, we aim to analyze the relationship between X-ray spectral diagnostics parameters and measurements at other wavelengths. This paper focuses on the methodology of catalog generation, describing the automated line-detection algorithm. Methods. A moderate sample (∼2400 observations) of high-quality RGS spectra available at XMM-Newton Science Archive is used as our starting point. A list of potential emission lines is selected based on a multi-scale peak-detection algorithm in a uniform and automated way without prior assumption on the underlying astrophysical model. The candidate line list is validated via spectral fitting with simple continuum and line profile models. We also compare the catalog content with published literature results on a small number of exemplary sources. Results. We generate a catalog of emission lines (1.2 × 104) detected in ∼1600 observations toward stars, X-ray binaries, supernovae remnants, active galactic nuclei, and groups and clusters of galaxies. A microbunching instability (MBI) driven by beam collective effects can deteriorate electron beam quality in advanced x-ray free electron lasers. In this paper, we demonstrate a scheme to suppress microbunching instability by adjusting the compression ratio of two-stage bunch compressor in linear accelerator of the Shanghai soft X-ray Free-Electron Laser User Facility (SXFEL-UF). The calculation of the microbunching instability gain and the mechanism of MBI suppression scheme can be revealed by the theoretical model in this paper. Numerical simulations are presented to verify the analytical results. Furthermore, benefit by the high temporal resolution of transverse deflecting structure (TDS), beam experiments for direct analysis of MBI were carried out at SXFEL-UF. Theoretical calculations as well as simulation and consistent experimental results illustrate that the suppression of microbunching instability can be achieved by increasing the first stage compression ratio of the linac in the SXFEL-UF. This paper presents the results of studying dispersed media formation during the electrical explosion of thin metal wires in vacuum by using low-current generators (∼1–10 kA). Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the composition and structure of the corresponding explosion products as well as to the problem of their visualization using simultaneous laser interferometry and shadow imaging at two wavelengths (1.064 µm and 0.532 µm). Our findings indicate the important role in the visualization of the explosion products that belongs to multiple scattering by submicron droplets of dense condensed matter, which are mixed with metal vapor. The hypothesis on the existence of submicron droplets in the products of exploding metal wires correlates with the results obtained by soft x-ray radiography combined with a laser probing technique. Taking into account the multiple scattering by submicron droplets, it is possible to significantly clarify the parameters of the explosion products visualized via laser probing techniques as well as to gain a deeper insight into the physics behind the electrical wire explosion. In this paper we test if the ∼0.3–15 keV XMM-Newton EPIC pn spectral continuum of IPs can be described by the thermal Comptonization compTT model. We used publicly observations of 12 IPs (AE Aqr, EX Hya, V1025 Cen, V2731 Oph, RX J2133.7+5107, PQ Gem, NY Lup, V2400 Oph, IGR J00234+6141, IGR J17195-4100, V1223 Sgr, and XY Ari). We find that our modeling is capable of fitting well the average spectral continuum of these sources. In this framework, UV/soft X-ray seed photons (with 〈kTs〉 of 0.096 ± 0.013 keV) coming presumably from the star surface are scattered off by electrons present in an optically thick plasma (with 〈kTe〉 of 3.05 ± 0.16 keV and optical depth 〈τ〉 of 9.5 ± 0.6 for plane geometry) located nearby (on top) to the more central seed photon emission regions. A soft blackbody (bbody) component is observed in 5 out of the 13 observations analyzed, with a mean temperature 〈kTbb〉 of 0.095 ± 0.004 keV. We observed that the spectra of IPs show in general two photon indices Γ, which are driven by the source luminosity and optical depth. Low luminosity IPs show 〈Γ〉 of 1.83 ± 0.19, whereas high luminosity IPs show lower 〈Γ〉 of 1.34 ± 0.02. Moreover, the good spectral fits of PQ Gem and V2400 Oph indicate that the polar subclass of CVs may be successfully described by the thermal Comptonization as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One aspect of the interaction between fast ions and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities is the fast ion transport. Coupled kink and tearing MHD instabilities have also been reported to cause fast ion transport. Recently, the 'kick' model has been developed to compute the evolution of the fast ion distribution from neutral beam injection using instabilities as phase-space resonance sources. The goal of this paper is to utilize the kick model to understand the physics of fast ion transport caused by the coupled kink and tearing modes. Soft x-ray diagnostics are used to identify the mode parameters in the National Spherical Torus Experiment. The comparison of neutron rates measured and computed from time-dependent TRANSP simulation with the kick model shows that the coupling of kink and tearing mode is important in determination of the fast ion transport. The numerical scan of the mode parameters shows that the relative phase of the kink and tearing modes and the overlapping of kink and tearing mode resonances in the phase space can affect the fast ion transport, suggesting that the synergy of the coupled modes may be causing the fast ion transport. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of some blazars exhibit an ultraviolet (UV) and/or soft X-ray excess that can be modeled with different radiation mechanisms. Polarization measurements of the UV/X-ray emission from blazars may provide new and unique information about the astrophysical environment of blazar jets, and could thus help to distinguish between different emission scenarios. In this paper, a new Monte Carlo code—Monte Carlo Applications for Partially Polarized Inverse External-Compton Scattering—for polarization-dependent Compton scattering is used to simulate the polarization signatures in a model where the UV/soft X-ray excess arises from the bulk Compton process. Predictions of the expected polarization signatures of Compton emission from the soft X-ray excess in the SED of AO 0235+164 and the UV excess in the SED of 3C 279 are made for upcoming and proposed polarimetry missions. IGR J17091−3624 is a transient galactic black hole which has a distinct quasi-periodic variability known as 'heartbeat', similar to the one observed in GRS 1915 + 105. In this paper, we report the results of ∼125 ks AstroSat observations of this source during the 2016 outburst. For the first time, a double-peaked QPO (DPQ) is detected in a few time segments of this source with a difference of δ f   ∼ 12 mHz between the two peaks. The nature of the DPQ was studied based on hardness ratios and using the static as well as the dynamic power spectrum. Additionally, a low-frequency (25–48 mHz) 'heartbeat' single-peak QPO (SPQ) was observed at different intervals of time along with harmonics (50–95 mHz). Broad-band spectra in the range 0.7–23 keV, obtained with Soft X-ray Telescope and Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter , could be fitted well with combination of a thermal Comptonization and a multicolour disc component model. During AstroSat observation, the source was in the soft-intermediate state (SIMS) as observed with Swift /XRT. We present a comparative study of the 'heartbeat' state variability in IGR J17091−3624 with GRS 1915 + 105. Significant difference in the timing properties is observed although spectral parameters (Γ ∼ 2.1–2.4 and T max ∼ 0.6–0.8 keV) in the broad energy band remain similar. Spectral properties of segments exhibiting SPQ and DPQ are further studied using simple phase-resolved spectroscopy which does not show a significant difference. Based on the model parameters, we obtain the maximum ratio of mass accretion rate in GRS 1915 + 105 to that in IGR J17091−3624 as ∼25: 1. Magnetars are highly magnetized neutron stars that are characterized by recurrent emission of short-duration bursts in soft gamma-rays/hard X-rays. Recently, FRB 200428 was found to be associated with an X-ray burst from a Galactic magnetar. Two fast radio bursts show mysterious periodic activity. However, it is unclear whether magnetar X-ray bursts are periodic phenomena. In this paper, we investigate the activity period of SGR 1806-20. More than 3000 short bursts observed by different telescopes are collected, including the observations of RXTE, HETE-2, ICE, and Konus. We consider the observation windows and divide the data into two subsamples to alleviate the effect of uneven sampling. The epoch-folding and Lomb–Scargle methods are used to derive the period of the short bursts. We find a possible period of about 398.20 ± 25.45 days, but other peaks exist in the periodograms. If the period is real, the connection between short bursts of magnetars and fast radio bursts should be investigated extensively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies the energy dissipation of nonthermal electrons in the chromospheric flare ribbons during the peak time of a Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite X-class flare (SOL2011-09-06) using desaturated Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) narrow-band images. The temperature distribution in emission measure, called the differential emission measure (DEM), derived from the EUV fluxes from the flare ribbons shows an increase in the emission measure up to a temperature around 9 × 106 K, followed by a steep decline at higher temperatures. In contrast, the flare loop reaches temperatures up to 27 × 106 K. This result is in agreement with previously reported single-temperature measurements using soft X-ray filter images, as well as DEM distributions reported for smaller flares obtained from EUV line observations. The main difference between small and large flares appears to be an increased emission measure in the flare ribbons, while the ribbon peak temperature is similar for all flares. This is different from the flare loop temperatures, where the hottest temperatures occur in the largest flares. However, the physically relevant quantity for energy dissipation, the energy content of the heated plasma as a function of temperature, does not need to peak at the same temperature as the DEM. The poorly constrained source thickness in radial extent of the flare ribbons has a significant impact on the shape of the differential thermal energy distribution. In particular, if the highest temperatures occur over a wide radial extent as "evaporating" plasma starts expending, the largest amount of energy could potentially be hidden above the peak temperature of the DEM. The SPECIES beamline has been transferred to the new 1.5 GeV storage ring at the MAX IV Laboratory. Several improvements have been made to the beamline and its endstations during the transfer. Together the Ambient Pressure X‐ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Resonant Inelastic X‐ray Scattering endstations are capable of conducting photoelectron spectroscopy in elevated pressure regimes with enhanced time‐resolution and flux and X‐ray scattering experiments with improved resolution and flux. Both endstations offer a unique capability for experiments at low photon energies in the vacuum ultraviolet and soft X‐ray range. Solar extreme-ultraviolet (EUV: 100–1100 Å) radiation rises in the 104 K upper chromosphere and hotter layers extending into the million-degree corona. Much of the EUV normally is not visible in other stars owing to interstellar H i absorption. The present study derived power-law scaling relations for EUV species based on irradiance spectra from the Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory, over the rise and fall of recent sunspot Cycle 24. These relations not only can test solar models, but also allow "invisible" stellar EUV emissions to be reconstructed from more accessible ultraviolet (UV: 1100–3000 Å) proxies, with implications for heating, ionization, and erosion of exoplanet atmospheres by Sun-like hosts. Hot EUV coronal tracers like Si xii 520 Å (8 MK) show strongly curved power laws relative to chromospheric H i 1025 Å Lyβ, as was seen in Paper I for 0.2–2 keV soft X-rays versus Mg ii 2800 Å. The brightest EUV feature, He ii 303 Å, exhibits a nearly 1:1 correlation with Lyβ (and H i 1215 Lyα, but slightly steeper than 1:1 relative to Mg ii). The second brightest, C iii 977 Å, has a shallower power-law slope of ∼0.5. Correlations for low first ionization potential species, such as Mg, Si, and Fe, might be affected by cycle-dependent chemical fractionation. Parameterized flux–flux relations are presented for most of the strong EUV (and selected UV) features, together with fluxes of individual lines and broad EUV wavelength bands at the highs and lows of Cycle 24. Elliptical accretion disk models for tidal disruption events (TDEs) have been recently proposed and independently developed by two groups. Although these two models are characterized by a similar geometry, their physical properties differ considerably. In this paper, we further investigate the properties of the elliptical accretion disk of the nearly uniform distribution of eccentricity within the disk plane. Our results show that the elliptical accretion disks have distinctive hydrodynamic structures and spectral energy distributions, associated with TDEs. The soft X-ray photons generated at pericenter and nearby are trapped in the disk and advected around the ellipse because of large electron scattering opacity. They are absorbed and reprocessed into emission lines and low-frequency continuum via recombination and bremsstrahlung emission. Because of the rapid increase of bound–free and free–free opacities with radius, the low-frequency continuum photons become trapped in the disk at large radius and are advected through apocenter and back to the photon-trapping radius. Elliptical accretion disks predict sub-Eddington luminosities and emit mainly at the photon-trapping radius of thousands of Schwarzschild radii with a blackbody spectrum of nearly single temperature of typically about 3 × 104 K. Because of the self-regulation, the photon-trapping radius expands and contracts following the rise and fall of accretion rate. The radiation temperature is nearly independent of BH mass and accretion rate and varies weakly with the stellar mass and the viscosity parameter. The Soochow University Beamline, located at the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory in China, is a Soft X-ray beamline designed for studying energy-related materials and devices. It operates in the energy range of 45 eV–1100 eV and is specifically tailored for investigating Li, B, C, N, O, F K-edges, and most L-edges of transition metals. The beamline offers various capabilities, including X-ray absorption, photon in photon out, and in situ/operando studies of energy materials and devices in gas/liquid environments. It has been successful in producing high-quality research papers and is open to users worldwide. The beamline is a collaborative effort between Soochow University and the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, with funding from Soochow University. • Image recognition of cracks inside maize seeds based on soft X-rays. • Image enhancement of soft X-ray images was implemented with effective results. • The YOLOv8 model was used and optimized and compared. The current investigation on image recognition and internal crack detection of maize seeds primarily relies on visible light imaging. However, due to the low transmissivity of plant cells, even with image enhancement measures, the clarity of internal cracks in the images and the subsequent feature extraction process can be a trade-off. Soft X-rays possess exceptional penetration capability and offer better safety and convenience compared to hard X-rays, making them highly suitable for visualizing internal structures within plant tissues like maize seeds. In this paper, a non-invasive Imaging Technique for Image Enhancement is proposed, combining wavelet thresholding denoising, image standardization, bilateral filtering, and laplacian sharpening. This method is based on soft X-rays and successfully achieves image recognition of cracks present inside Zhengdan 958 maize seeds using an optimized YOLOv8 model. It effectively addresses challenges related to the limited light transmission of maize seeds, difficulty in crack localization, and algorithm generalization issues. The optimized YOLOv8 model demonstrates an average precision (AP) value that is 3.1% higher than that of the original model. Furthermore, by applying image enhancement, the AP value increases by 1.8%. The proposed method exhibits an average recognition accuracy of 99.66% for intact or broken seeds, an average precision of 99.87%, an average recognition recall of 99.48%, and an average single-frame image detection time of 7.49 ms in the single seed detection experiment. The Korea fourth-generation storage ring (Korea-4GSR) has a low electron beam emittance of 60 p.m.-rad, and provides a photon beam that is 100 times brighter and 100 times more coherent than the third-generation Pohang Light Source (PLS-II). However, the new source imposes a higher heat load on beamline optics. In particular, the first mirror (M1), which receives the broad-bandwidth white beam will be distorted by the thermal load from X-ray beam and the heat bump will degrade the beam quality. For the thermal analysis of M1, a method is developed to solve the thermal deformation with temperature gradient and absorbed power density. To implement the method in the analysis of heat load effect on M1, a benchmark study was performed on beamline 8A at PLS-II. Free-electron lasers are capable of producing high-quality radiation in a wide wavelength range and at very high power and brilliance. To reach improved performance especially regarding coherence, bandwidth and wavelength stability, different seeding techniques are often required. However, a successful implementation of seeding typically demands a very high-quality electron beam, in terms of energy distribution and emittance. Techniques like Echo-Enabled Harmonic Generation (EEHG) and High-Brightness SASE (HB-SASE) require, or are significantly enhanced, by a flat distribution of particles in the longitudinal phase space. In this paper we describe how the initially chirped longitudinal phase space in the proposed Soft X-ray Laser (SXL) at the MAX IV laboratory can be tailored by first overcompressing and then de-chirping the electron pulse. We also show that it is possible to retain the properties of the electron bunch and how such an enhanced distribution can drive HB-SASE "seeding", resulting in a significantly reduced bandwidth and a better wavelength stability. In this paper, we present a new electron capture detector based on a compact X-ray tube (X-ECD) for electron generation by soft X-ray radiation instead of using a radioactive source. ECDs are commonly used in many laboratories as standard GC detectors since their invention in the 1950s, especially for highly sensitive detection of halogenated substances, pesticides or other environmental pollutants. However, due to unsatisfactory alternatives, many ECDs are still used with radioactive β-emitters, which is difficult and expensive in most applications today due to legal restrictions. The new X-ECD contains a small X-ray tube for generating free electrons by ionizing the carrier gas like in radioactive ECDs. Thus, no additional dopants or special gases are required. The X-ECD has limits of detection in the ppt v range and shows linearity over a wide concentration range. Furthermore, the used X-ray tube shows good long-term stability. So far, we have operated the X-ray tube continuously for about one year without notable degradation. However, in case of future degradation, the X-ECD can still be operated with the same sensitivity by simple adjusting the set point current in constant current mode. This makes calibration robust against possible degradation of the X-ray tube. In combination with a conventional gas chromatograph, the X-ECD is able to detect halogenated hydrocarbons and even low volatile pesticides without any peak distortion such as tailing. Thereby a minimum detectability in the upper fg/µL range for Lindane was reached, which is similar when compared to radioactive ECDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we have successfully demonstrated that the directional control of the light output of the scintillator can be achieved by mixed-scale microstructures which integrate photonic crystals on the wavelength scale and microlens arrays on the micrometer scale. Compared to the reference sample, the mixed-scale microstructures can enhance the light output of the scintillator by 3.07-fold at the emergence angle of 35°. This enhancement in the light output exhibits both azimuthal angle and wavelength dependence. Our hybrid simulation and experimental characterization explain the physical mechanism behind the enhanced directional light output. In this paper the back‐side‐illuminated Percival 2‐Megapixel (P2M) detector is presented, along with its characterization by means of optical and X‐ray photons. For the first time, the response of the system to soft X‐rays (250 eV to 1 keV) is presented. The main performance parameters of the first detector are measured, assessing the capabilities in terms of noise, dynamic range and single‐photon discrimination capability. An important trend in extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) development in recent years has been the use of seeding by an external laser, aimed to improve the coherence and stability of the generated pulses. The high-gain harmonic generation seeding technique was first implemented at FERMI and provided FEL radiation with high coherence as well as intensity and wavelength stability comparable to table-top ultrafast lasers. At FERMI, the seed laser has another very important function: it is the source of external laser pulses used in pump–probe experiments allowing one to achieve a record-low timing jitter. This paper describes the design, performance and operational modes of the FERMI seed laser in both single- and double-cascade schemes. In addition, the planned upgrade of the system to meet the challenges of the upgrade to echo-enabled harmonic generation mode is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SwissFEL is a compact, high-brilliance, soft and hard X-ray free electron laser (FEL) facility that started user operation in 2019. The facility is composed of two parallel beam lines seeded by a common linear accelerator (LINAC), and a two-bunch photo-injector. For the injector, an innovative dual-photocathode laser scheme has been developed based on state-of-the-art ytterbium femtosecond laser systems. In this paper, we describe the performance of the SwissFEL photocathode drive lasers (PCDLs), the pulse-shaping capabilities as well as the versatility of the systems, which allow many different modes of operation of SwissFEL. The full control over the SwissFEL electron bunch properties via the unique architecture of the PCDLs will enable in the future the advent of more-advanced FEL modes; these modes include, but are not restricted to, the generation of single or trains of sub-femtosecond FEL pulses, multi-color FEL and finally, the generation of fully coherent X-ray pulses via laser-based seeding.
