Anode-free batteries (AFBs) have the potential of ultra-high energy density, but lithium dendrite has largely hindered their practical applications. In this work, an in-situ grown gradient solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer on pre-designed micro-hole-grid (MHG) Cu reservoir is proposed to guide uniform lithium deposition and propagation, by which the electrode interface is stabilized and the surface stress is considerably decreased endowing the AFBs with outstanding areal capacity and cycling performance. The gradient SEI is confirmed by cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM) and XPS to be composed of (1) an elastic organic top layer to hinder non-Li species migration and withstand volume fluctuation, and (2) a lithophilic LiCl-rich bottom layer to render the rapid lithium supply. Operando electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) shows a dynamic Li deposition, unambiguously demonstrating a dendrites-free behavior. As a result, the full cells of a gradient SEI modified Cu reservoir paired with a LiFePO4 cathode exhibit high capacity of 95 mAh g–1 and Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.5% after 100 cycles, much better than the control cells with planar current collectors (1.6 mAh g–1, 2.6%). These findings are enlightening in engineering better interphases for high energy and safe rechargeable lithium metal batteries.

We address the secure control issue of networked non-affine nonlinear systems under denial of service (DoS) attacks. As for the situation that the system information cannot be measured in specific period due to the malicious DoS attacks, we design a neural networks (NNs) state observer with switching gain to estimate internal states in real time. Considering the error and dynamic performance of each subsystem, we introduce the recursive sliding mode dynamic surface method and a nonlinear gain function into the secure control strategy. The relationship between the frequency (duration) of DoS attacks and the stability of the system is established by the average dwell time (ADT) method. It is proven that the system can withstand the influence of DoS attacks and track the desired trajectory while preserving the boundedness of all closed-loop signals. Finally, simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed secure control strategy.

Maternally derived antibodies (MDA) substantially interfere with active immunity in post-hatch vaccination, although they provide early protection against disease through passive immunity in young chickens. Previously, Newcastle disease virus (NDV) strain TS09-C was demonstrated to be safe and immunogenic as in-ovo vaccine in specific-pathogen-free chickens. Here, we evaluated the safety, protective efficacy, and duration of clinical protection of the TS09-C virus as an in-ovo vaccine for commercial chickens in the presence of Maternally derived antibodies against NDV. This vaccine was safe in commercial chickens and provided at least 80% protection against a virulent NDV challenge for 3 mo, despite inducing a low hemagglutinin-inhibition titer. For commercial chickens, the protective efficacy of the in-ovo vaccination was markedly higher than that of posthatch vaccination, and the cellular immune response might play an important role in the higher protective efficacy of the in-ovo vaccine. The overall results indicate that the maternally derived antibodies against NDV do not significantly interfere with the ability of the in-ovo vaccine strain TS09-C to induce protective cellular immunity.

Diamond like carbon (DLC) film exhibits typical properties such as high hardness and low coefficient of friction, often used to improve fiction and wear performance. In the application of surface modification of medical implants, it is of great interests to investigate the failure mechanism of DLC in water environment, in order to avoid the early-stage delamination of DLC film in vivo and promote the application of DLC in implanted medical devices. In this work, four kinds of DLC films were prepared by electron cyclotron resonance plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, plasma immersion ion deposition and filtered cathode vacuum arc methods. The wear and failure behavior of DLC films in air and water environment were investigated by ball-on-disc tribological experiments. The results show the friction coefficient of DLC film with high hydrophilic is sensitive to the water environment. Both the interface corrosion and mechanical property affect the adhesion failure of DLC film in water. Hydrogenated DLC film is vulnerable to water environment because the hydrogenous interface is susceptible to corrosion, however, the low hardness and low modulus can reduce the contact stress, which is help to achieve a longer service life of hydrogenated DLC film in water. Hydrogen free DLC film is less sensitive to water environment compared with the hydrogenated one.

This is the first study to clone duck CCCH-type zinc finger antiviral protein (duZAP) from Jingjiang duck (Anas platyrhynchos). Full-length duZAP cDNA was 2154 bp and encoded a 717-amino acid polypeptide containing four highly conserved CCCH-type finger motifs, a WWE domain and a poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) domain. duZAP was expressed in multiple duck tissues, with the highest mRNA expression in the spleen. Overexpression of duZAP in duck embryo fibroblast cells (DEFs) led to activation of the transcription factors IRF1 and NF-κB, and induction of IFN-β. Analysis of deletion mutants revealed that both the WWE and PARP domains of duZAP were essential for activating the IFN-β promoter. Knockdown of duZAP in DEFs significantly reduced poly (I:C)- and duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV)-induced IFN-β activation. Our findings further the understanding of the role of duZAP in the duck innate immune response.

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida), a causative agent of fowl cholera, is an important pathogen in the poultry industry. In the present study, we found that the inactivated vaccine of P. multocida grown in an iron-restricted medium provided better protection than that grown in normal medium. Thus, we adopted a comparative proteomics approach, by using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE), coupled with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/TOF MS), to profile the supernatant proteins associated with P. multocida under both conditions. Eleven upregulated proteins were identified, including aspartate ammonia-lyase (AspA), diacylglycerol kinase (DgK), 30S ribosomal protein S6 (RpsF), and eight outer membrane proteins (OMPs). To further characterize the three novel supernatant proteins identified under iron-restricted conditions, the AspA, DgK and RpsF proteins were expressed and purified, and used as immunogens to vaccinate chickens. The results showed that AspA, DgK and RpsF proteins induced 80.0%, 66.7%, and 80.0% immunity, respectively. These data indicate that the three novel proteins identified in the supernatant of the culture media might play important roles in the survival of bacteria under iron-restricted conditions, and thus protect chickens against P. multocida. These findings also suggest that the proteins identified can be used as subunit vaccines.

AIM To investigate the efficacy and safety of the self-locking stand-alone cage used from opposite approach for the treatment of adjacent segment disease (ASD) after an anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF). MATERIAL AND METHODS In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 8 cases of ACCF in the treatment of ASD cervical spondylopathy. All patients received self-locking stand-alone cage treatment. At different time points, the clinical status was evaluated using the Japan Orthopedic Association (JOA) score, JOA recovery rate (RR), and Neck Disability index (NDI) score. X-ray measurements included C2-C7 Cobb angle, fusion segment angle (FSA), cervical vertebral bow depth (VBP), and height of surgical segment (HOS). Statistical imaging parameters of sagittal cervical spine. Bone graft fusion in all self-locking stand-alone cage segments was evaluated. RESULTS All operations were successfully completed, and no infection, epidural hematoma, or rupture of the dura mater were observed in all patients. Compared with pre-operation, the JOA and NDI scores at 3 months and at the last follow-up were significantly improved (p < 0.05). The JOA recovery rate between the final follow-up and preoperatively was 64.8±5.2%. One patient had dysphagia postoperatively, but was resolved after 3 months. Three months after surgery, the sagittal radiographic outcomes improved significantly and were well maintained during the final follow-up. CONCLUSION The self-locking stand-alone cage is a reliable and effective method used from the opposite approach for the treatment of ASD after ACCF in terms of JOA and NDI scores. The cervical alignment correction is considered satisfactory.

In the power system, the inspection of transmission lines is a very important part. With the continuous development of multi rotor UAV technology and the promotion of market demand, UAV electric inspection gradually replaces the operation method of manual climbing tower. However, in the current environment, the work intensity of UAV pilots is high, and the work environment is bad, especially in the case of over the horizon, it is easy to have accidents, so the development of autonomous inspection UAV has become the main development direction at this stage. Through the research of the charging platform that can be carried on the tower, the hardware structure and the algorithm used are designed, which can realize the charging range and the docking function of the UAV in the independent inspection of the transmission line.

Campylobacter jejuni is a major foodborne pathogen that plays an important role in spreading drug resistance. We report the draft genome sequences of two multidrug-resistant C. jejuni isolates which contained similar mutations in the CmeR box. This will improve the understanding of C. jejuni antimicrobial resistance and genetic characteristics.

Since 2009, the deep learning revolution, which was triggered by the introduction of ImageNet, has stimulated the synergy between Machine Learning (ML)/Deep Learning (DL) and Software Engineering (SE). Meanwhile, critical reviews have emerged that suggest that ML/DL should be used cautiously. To improve the quality (especially the applicability and generalizability) of ML/DL-related SE studies, and to stimulate and enhance future collaborations between SE/AI researchers and industry practitioners, we conducted a 10-year Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on 906 ML/DL-related SE papers published between 2009 and 2018. Our trend analysis demonstrated the mutual impacts that ML/DL and SE have had on each other. At the same time, however, we also observed a paucity of replicable and reproducible ML/DL-related SE studies and identified five factors that influence their replicability and reproducibility. To improve the applicability and generalizability of research results, we analyzed what ingredients in a study would facilitate an understanding of why a ML/DL technique was selected for a specific SE problem. In addition, we identified the unique trends of impacts of DL models on SE tasks, as well as five unique challenges that needed to be met in order to better leverage DL to improve the productivity of SE tasks. Finally, we outlined a road-map that we believe can facilitate the transfer of ML/DL-based SE research results into real-world industry practices.

AIM To compare the efficacy and safety of minimally endoscopic discectomy (MED), percutaneous endoscopic transforaminal discectomy (PETD) and percutaneous endoscopic interlaminar discectomy (PEID) in the treatment of L5/S1 lumbar disc herniation (LDH). MATERIAL AND METHODS From May 2012 to January 2017, 317 patients with L5/S1 LDH treated with MED, PETD or PEID were reviewed. Pre- and postoperative pain was measured using a visual analog scale (VAS; 0 ?10), and functional status was assessed using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI; 0 ? 100%). Clinical outcomes, SF-36 scores and CK levels were compared between the 3 groups. RESULTS There were 177 females and 140 males; the ages ranged from 22 to 74 years; and the course of disease was 15 to 85 days, with an average of 42.8 days. The postoperative bed rest time and average hospital stay in the MED group were higher than in the other two groups, and the differences were statistically significant. There was no significant difference in the results evaluated by the MacNab criteria. There were no significant differences in the levels of CK between the three groups before and after surgery (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Three minimally invasive surgeries for the treatment of L5/S1 LDH achieved satisfactory clinical outcomes; however, each procedure has its own advantages, disadvantages and indications. Surgeons need to choose the most appropriate surgery according to the individual condition of the patient to achieve the best therapeutic effect.

H9N2 is the most prevalent low pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAIV) in domestic poultry in the world. Two distinct H9N2 poultry lineages, G1-like (A/quail/Hong Kong/G1/97) and Y280-like (A/Duck/Hong Kong/Y280/1997) viruses, are usually associated with binding affinity for both α 2,3 and α 2,6 sialic acid receptors (avian and human receptors), raising concern whether these viruses possess pandemic potential. To explore the impact of mouse adaptation on the transmissibility of a Y280-like virus A/Chicken/Hubei/214/2017(H9N2) (abbreviated as WT), we performed serial lung-to-lung passages of the WT virus in mice. The mouse-adapted variant (MA) exhibited enhanced pathogenicity and advantaged transmissibility after passaging in mice. Sequence analysis of the complete genomes of the MA virus revealed a total of 16 amino acid substitutions. These mutations distributed across 7 segments including PB2, PB1, PA, NP, HA, NA and NS1 genes. Furthermore, we generated a panel of recombinant or mutant H9N2 viruses using reverse genetics technology and confirmed that the PB2 gene governing the increased pathogenicity and transmissibility. The combinations of 340 K and 588 V in PB2 were important in determining the altered features. Our findings elucidate the specific mutations in PB2 contribute to the phenotype differences and emphasize the importance of monitoring the identified amino acid substitutions due to their potential threat to human health.

Newcastle disease virus strain D4 was isolated from healthy ducks in Hubei, China. The D4 isolate has a genome length of 15,186 nucleotides and is classified as genotype I of class II. Thermostability and pathogenicity tests demonstrate that D4 is a thermostable avirulent strain.

To improve the wear resistance of medical titanium alloy, Ta coatings were prepared by magnetron sputtering method on Ti6Al4V substrates. Phase structure and surface morphology of Ta coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscope, respectively. The properties of Ta coatings, including adhesion, nano-hardness, and wear resistance, were tested using nano-scratch, nano-indentation and tribometer, respectively. The results show that both stable body-centered cubic (α-Ta) phase and metastable tetragonal phase (β-Ta) coexist in a multi-layer structure, and it shows a non-columnar feature. Interestingly, only a pure phase with columnar crystals is found in monolayer Ta coating. A body-centered cubic (α-Ta) phase is found in a monolayer prepared under the pulse power bias voltage with low deposition temperature. A pure metastable tetragonal phase (β-Ta) is prepared under the direct current bias voltage, which has the best adhesion and wear resistance compared with other Ta coatings.

Salmonella Pullorum is a pathogen specific to birds that can cause Pullorum disease in young chickens and lead to considerable economic losses in the poultry industry. During transmission and infection, S. Pullorum will encounter various environmental stresses and host defenses. The stringent response is an important adaptation response induced by (p)ppGpp, and in Salmonella, (p)ppGpp is synthesized by two (p)ppGpp synthetases, RelA and SpoT. To investigate the role of (p)ppGpp synthetases in the adaptation and pathogenicity of S. Pullorum, a (p)ppGpp synthetases mutant (ΔrelAΔspoT) was constructed, and its physiological phenotypes and pathogenicity, as well as transcription profiling, were compared with the parent strain. The ΔrelAΔspoT mutant showed decreased ability to form biofilms, and reduced resistance to acidic, alkaline, high osmolarity and H2O2 conditions. The internalization of the ΔrelAΔspoT mutant into host cells in vitro and its lethality and colonization abilities within young chickens were also significantly reduced. RNA sequencing showed that the (p)ppGpp synthetases did not only affect the classic stringent response, such as inhibition of DNA replication and protein synthesis, but also controlled the expression of many virulence factors, in particular, the Salmonella pathogenicity island 1 (SPI-1) and SPI-2 type III secretion systems (T3SSs), and adhesion factors. These results suggest that the (p)ppGpp synthetases are required for the pathogenicity of S. Pullorum by affecting its stress response and the expression of the virulence factors.

To extract and express the knowledge hidden in information systems, discernibility matrix and its extensions were introduced and applied successfully in many real life applications. Binary discernibility matrix, as a representative approach, has many interesting superior properties and has been rapidly developed to find intuitive and easy to understand knowledge. However, at present, the binary discernibility matrix is mainly adopted in the complete information system. It is a challenging topic how to achieve the attribute reduction by using binary discernibility matrix in incomplete information system. A form of generalized binary discernibility matrix is further developed for a number of representative extended rough set models that deal with incomplete information systems. Some useful properties and criteria are introduced for judging the attribute core and attribute relative reduction. Thereafter, a new algorithm is formulated which supports attribute core and attribute relative reduction based on the generalized binary discernibility matrix. This algorithm is not only suitable for consistent information systems but also inconsistent information systems. The feasibility of the proposed methods was demonstrated by worked examples and experimental analysis.

TiSiCN, TiSiCON, TiCrSiCN, TiCrSiCON, CrSiCN and CrSiCON coatings have been deposited on WC-Co substrates and Si wafers using plasma enhanced magnetron sputtering (PEMS) technique. The microstructure, composition and mechanical properties of the non-oxygen coatings and oxygen-containing coatings were studied by XRD, SEM, EDS and load-depth-sensing indentation. The tribological behavior of the coatings against Al2O3 balls was conducted by pin-on-disc tests. The results show that TiSiCON, TiCrSiCON and CrSiCON coatings exhibit the face center cubic (fcc) TiN-type (or CrN-type) structure. The existence of oxygen will induce loose structure and more defects for TiSiCON, TiCrSiCON and CrSiCON coatings compared with TiSiCN, TiCrSiCN and CrSiCN, respectively. The addition of oxygen element would lead to the decrease of the hardness (H) and elasticity of Ti(Cr)SiCN coatings. TiCrSiCON and CrSiCON coatings with oxygen element have lower friction coefficients and wear rate compared with TiCrSiCN and CrSiCN coatings without oxygen, respectively. The TiSiCON with higher friction coefficient and wear rate shows poor abrasive wear resistance than TiSiCN.

(p)ppGpp-mediated stringent response is one of the main adaption mechanism in bacteria, and the ability to adapt to environment is linked to the pathogenesis of bacterial pathogens. In the zoonotic pathogen Streptococcus suis, there are two (p)ppGpp synthetases, RelA and RelQ. To investigate the regulatory functions of (p)ppGpp/(p)ppGpp synthetases on the pathogenesis of S. suis, the phenotypes of the [(p)ppGpp(0)] mutant ΔrelAΔrelQ and its parental strain were compared. Light and electron microscopy observation showed that the mutant strain had a longer chain-length than its parental strain. Disruption of relA and relQ led to decreased adhesive and invasive ability to HEp-2 cells, and increased sensitivity to the blood killing and phagocytosis. Mouse infection experiments showed that the mutant strain was attenuated and easier to be cleaned up in vivo. Quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis indicated that the expressions of virulence related genes involving in morphology and virulence were down-regulated in the mutant strain. Our study demonstrated that the (p)ppGpp synthetases or (p)ppGpp can regulate the pathogenesis of this important zoonotic pathogen.

Deep learning based object detection has achieved great success. However, these supervised learning methods are data-hungry and time-consuming. This restriction makes them unsuitable for limited data and urgent tasks, especially in the applications of remote sensing. Inspired by the ability of humans to quickly learn new visual concepts from very few examples, we propose a training-free, one-shot geospatial object detection framework for remote sensing images. It consists of (1) a feature extractor with remote sensing domain knowledge, (2) a multi-level feature fusion method, (3) a novel similarity metric method, and (4) a 2-stage object detection pipeline. Experiments on sewage treatment plant and airport detections show that proposed method has achieved a certain effect. CodY and (p)ppGpp synthetases are two important global regulators of bacteria. In some pathogens, such as Listeria monocytogenes, the GTP pool links these two regulatory systems, and introducing a codY mutant into the ΔrelA strain restored the pathogenicity of the attenuated ΔrelA mutant. In previous studies, we identified the (p)ppGpp synthetases (RelA and RelQ) and CodY of Streptococcus suis. To understand the interrelationships between these two regulators in S. suis, a ΔrelAΔrelQΔcodY mutant was constructed, and its growth, morphology, and pathogenicity were evaluated. Compared with ΔrelAΔrelQ, ΔcodY, its growth was very slow, but its chain length was partly restored to the wild-type length and its capsule became thick and rough. The adherence, invasion ability, and resistance to whole-blood killing in vitro of ΔrelAΔrelQΔcodY and its lethality and colonization ability in mice were clearly reduced, which differs from the effects of these mutations in L. monocytogenes. An analysis of gene expression showed that CodY interacted with the relA promoter in a GTP-independent manner to positively regulate the expression of relA. The introduction of a codY mutant into the ΔrelAΔrelQ strain further reduced the expression of virulence factors, which suggests a novel interaction between the (p)ppGpp synthetases and CodY. This study extends our understanding of the relationship between the (p)ppGpp-mediated stringent response and the regulation of CodY in S. suis.

A route to reducing the wear of the metal counterpart in the friction of meatal against diamond-like carbon (DLC) is to form a lubricating tribofilm on the metal counterface. However, in liquid lubricating conditions, the formation of tribofilm can be influenced by both the lubricating medium and the counterpart material. Here we report the effect of lubricating biomolecule and doping fluorine element on the formation of tribofilm in fluorinated DLC (FDLC)-Ti6Al4V friction system. A group of ball-on-disc frictional experiments with different sliding speeds and normal loads were performed in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution. The results showed the formation of tribofilm was inhibited by the absorption of biomolecules on the frictional surface, thus improving the friction coefficient and wear of Ti6Al4V counterpart. Doping fluorine into DLC film also can restrain the formation of tribofilm on Ti6Al4V counterface. As a result, tribofilm is difficult to form when Ti6Al4V counterface slides against FDLC in BSA solution. Fluorinated DLC film should be considered carefully for the anti-wear use in body fluid containing biomolecules because it might cause severe wear of the counterpart material.

Background Pullorum disease, caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Pullorum (S. Pullorum), is one of the most important bacterial infections in the poultry industry in developing countries, including China. To examine the prevalence and characteristics of S. Pullorum, the Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) genotypes, fluoroquinolones resistance, and biofilm-forming abilities of S. Pullorum isolates were investigated, collected from 2011 to 2016 in China. Results Thirty S. Pullorum isolates collected from 2011 to 2016 were analyzed. Quinolones susceptibility testing showed that 90% of the isolates were resistant to the first generation of quinolines nalidixic acid, but the resistance rates to different fluoroquinolones agents were lower than 13.3%; for some there was even no resistance. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) showed that ST-92 was the dominating genotype, accounting for 90.0% of all S. pullorum strains. The remaining three isolates were of the new reported sequence type ST-2151. Interestingly, the Asp87Gly substitution in quinolone resistance-determining regions (QRDR) of GyrA was only observed in the three strains of ST-2151, suggesting a potential correlation between Asp87Gly substitution and sequence type (p

We report that Clostridium perfringens was present in 23.1% (130/562) of broiler chickens and 15.1% (38/252) of retail chicken meat samples in central China. Among 168 isolates, type A was the preponderant genotype, and 3% of isolates were positive C. perfringens enterotoxin (cpe). Among different sources, the prevalence was higher in free-range chickens compared to chickens from intensive poultry farms, but with lower proportions of antimicrobial resistance.

A feed-forward compensation strategy for the disturbance is proposed for the control problem of the bacteria in the fermentation process of the penicillin. Firstly, the nonlinear disturbance observer is designed to estimate the lumped disturbance of the system. Then, a sliding mode control law is designed for the system. The design of the control law guarantees the closed-loop system is asymptotically stable and achieves the purpose of tracking control for the bacteria’s concentration in the system. The simulation results show that this method can enhance the anti-disturbance capability and improve the control performance of the system.

Background Campylobacter is considered to be the leading cause of human bacterial gastroenteritis, of which poultry is the main reservoir. Campylobacter contaminated chicken products are a major cause of human Campylobacter infection. In this study, the prevalence of Campylobacter in chicken in central China was investigated, and the genotypic diversity, antimicrobial resistance and biofilm of these isolates were characterized. Results A total of 206 Campylobacter isolates, including 166 C. jejuni and 40 C. coli, were isolated from chicken farms and live poultry markets in central China. Multilocus sequence typing and phylogenetic analysis showed that the Campylobacter isolates had diverse genetic backgrounds, which covered most of the dominant clone complexes (CCs) reported throughout China. The most prevalent CCs were CC-464, CC-1150, CC-353, and CC-828. All the isolates showed resistance to norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and Cefazolin, and a prevalent resistance to fluoroquinolones, β-lactams and tetracyclines was also observed. Among all the isolates, 133 strains showed the ability to form biofilm, thereinto, the isolates in two genetic branches, mainly including CC-21, CC-48, CC-677 and CC-45, showed a significantly lower ability to form biofilm than other genetic branches (p

Thermostable Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccines have been used widely to control Newcastle disease for village poultry flocks, due to their independence of cold chains for delivery and storage. To explore the potential use of thermostable NDV as a vaccine vector, an infectious clone of thermostable avirulent NDV strain TS09-C was developed using reverse genetics technology. The GFP gene, along with the self-cleaving 2A gene of foot-and-mouth disease virus and ubiquitin monomer (2AUbi), were inserted immediately upstream of the NP (nucleocapsid protein), M (matrix protein) or L (large polymerase protein) gene translation start codon in the TS09-C infectious clone. Detection of GFP expression in the recombinant virus-infected cells showed that the recombinant virus, rTS-GFP/M, with the GFP gene inserted into the M gene expressed the highest level of GFP. The rTS-GFP/M virus retained the same thermostability, growth dynamics and pathogenicity as its parental rTS09-C virus. Vaccination of specific-pathogen-free chickens with the rTS-GFP/M virus conferred complete protection against virulent NDV challenge. Taken together, the data suggested that the rTS09-C virus could be used as a vaccine vector to develop bivalent thermostable vaccines against Newcastle disease and the target avian diseases for village chickens, especially in the developing and least-developed countries.

Sequence analysis of 79 ciprofloxacin-resistant Campylobacter jejuni isolates collected in China showed resistance-related sequence variations in gyrA and CmeR-Box. All the isolates contain an identical Thr-86-Ile substitution in GyrA. Several novel CmeR-Box variations, including point substitutions, deletion, and insertion, were identified. The point insertion or deletion led to dramatically reduced binding of CmeR to the cmeABC promoter, which significantly increases the expression of cmeABC and contributes to the high fluoroquinolone resistance.

Background/Aims: The current study was designed to investigate the protective role of alkannin (ALK) on liver injury in diabetic C57BL/KsJ-db/db mice and explore its potential mechanisms. Methods: An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed. The levels of insulin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransaminase (AST), total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) were determined by commercial kits. The pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α were determined by ELISA. The levels of the ROCK/NF-κB pathway were determined by Western blotting. Results: The contents of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α were inhibited by ALK, metformin or fasudil in diabetic db/db mice. Further, Western blotting analysis showed that the expression of Rho, ROCK1, ROCK2, p-NF-κBp65, and p-IκBα was significantly reversed by ALK treatment. In human hepatic HepG2 cells, the hepatoprotective effects of ALK were further characterized. With response to palmitic acid-challenge, increased amounts of insulin, ALT, AST, TG, and TC were observed, whereas ALK pretreatment significantly inhibited their leakage in HepG2 cells without appreciable cytotoxic effects. The inflammation condition was recovered with ALK treatment as shown by changes of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α. Further, Western blotting analysis also suggested that ALK improves hepatic inflammation in a Rho-kinase pathway. Conclusion: The present study successfully investigated the role of Rho-kinase signalling in diabetic liver injury. ALK exhibited hepatoprotective effects in diabetic db/db mice, and it might act through improving hepatic inflammation through the Rho-kinase pathway.

Here, we report the complete genome sequence of a virulent Newcastle disease virus (NDV) strain HN1007, isolated from diseased duck flocks in Henan, China, in 2010. The isolate has a genome length of 15,186 nucleotides, and was classified as a member of genotype III of class II.

Fowl adenovirus (FAdV) serotype-4 is highly pathogenic for chickens, especially for broilers aged 3 to 5 wk, and it has emerged as one of the foremost causes of economic losses to the poultry industry in the last 30 years. The liver is a major target organ of FAdV-4 infections, and virus-infected chickens usually show symptoms of hydropericardium syndrome. The virus is very contagious, and it is spread both vertically and horizontally. It can be isolated from infected liver homogenates and detected by several laboratory diagnostic methods (including an agar gel immunodiffusion test, indirect immunofluorescence assays, counterimmunoelectrophoresis, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, restriction endonuclease analyses, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time PCR, and high-resolution melting-curve analyses). Although inactivated vaccines have been deployed widely to control the disease, attenuated live vaccines and subunit vaccines also have been developed, and they are more attractive vaccine candidates. This article provides a comprehensive review of FAdV-4, including its epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnostic detection, and vaccine strategies.

Fluorinated diamond-like carbon (DLC) films have good biocompatibility and bloodcompatibility. When they are used in cardiac valve prosthesis, the wear resistance has to be investigated in more detail. In this paper, the tribological behavior of fluorinated DLC films under different loads and sliding speeds in bull serum albumin (BSA) solutions were investigated by ball-on-disc friction tests. The results show that the proteins in BSA solutions promoted the DLC film adhesion failure because of the increased friction coefficients and accelerated corrosion rate. The fluorine doping can lower the corrosion rate of DLC film, thereby improving the adhesion stability and wear resistance of DLC in BSA solutions.

We report here the complete genome sequence of virulent fowl adenovirus serotype 4 strain HB1510, isolated from a diseased chicken with hydropericardium-hepatitis syndrome in Hubei, China, in 2015. The viral genome is 43,721 bp long, and sequence analysis showed an 11-amino-acid deletion in open reading frame 29 (ORF29).

Riemerella anatipestifer strain RA-JLLY is an avirulent strain, isolated from the brain of an old duck in Hubei province, China. Here, we report the genome sequence of this species.

The characteristics of atmospheric electric in fair weather and thunderstorm in Yuxi region have been analyzed by using the data obtained from Yunnan Lightning Location System and electric field mill from July 2006 to June 2007. It has been found the diurnal and monthly of atmospheric electric evolution in fair weather showed variation in Yuxi region. The charge structures of thunderstorm are both dipole and tripole, but most of charge structure of thunderstorm is dipolar. Different charge structure of thunderstorm is different discharge, the negative polarity of electric field underneath thunderstorm is main negative discharge, the activity of the cloud-to-ground(CG) flash is very active, the positive polarity of electric field underneath thunderstorm is main positive discharge, the activity of the cloud-to-ground flash is very weak. The methods of the CG lightning warning by the electric field mill are studied based on the variation characteristic of thunderstorm electric field, the polarity reversal warning method is applied, its POD and LT are more better than the threshold warning method.

Cloud-to-ground lightning data have been analyzed for the years 2006–2010 for Yunnan province for all ground flashes, positive flashes, the percentage of positive lightning, and peak currents for negative and positive lightning. Mean 400 thousands cloud-to-ground flashes happen in Yunnan province every year. The highest flash densities are in the Central Yunnan province (6.4 fl· km−2 yr−1), Areas of greater than 50% positive lightning occur in the west river valley. The median negative peak current is 27.9kA. The median positive peak current is 47.4 kA. It is founded that substantial differences between wet season lightning (Apr-Sep) and dry season lightning (Oct-Mar). Wet season lightning is characterized by a high CG flash count and percent positive CG flashes less than 5%; dry season lightning is characterized by a low CG flash count and percent positive CG flashes greater than 20%. The most of CG lightning flashes is single return stroke. The CG lightning activity in Yunnan province is weak in the morning and increases rapidly in the afternoon.

Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, one of the most important porcine respiratory pathogens, exhibits tight adherence to cell surfaces. The Flp pilus, which is assembled by the proteins encoded by the flp (fimbrial low-molecular-weight protein) operon, may play an important role in the bacterial adherence. In this study, the flp operons of twelve A. pleuropneumoniae serotype reference strains were sequenced and analyzed. The phenotypic diversity of fimbriae was observed using transmission electron microscopy, and the adherence ability was tested against a porcine lung epithelial cell line. The complete flp operon was identified in the reference strains of serotypes 1, 4, 5, 7, 12, and 13, consisting of 14 genes (flp1-flp2-tadV-rcpCAB-tadZABCDEFG). Fimbriae were observed protruding from the bacterial cell surfaces of these strains. In contrast, the flp promoter was absent in serotypes 2, 3, 6, 9, and 11, and the flp1 gene was truncated in serotypes 10 and 15. No pilus was observed on the surfaces of these strains. The piliated strains have higher efficiency of adhesion than the pilus-negative strains. Our data demonstrated that the Flp pili are involved in A. pleuropneumoniae adherence. The genetic diversity of the flp operons among different strains may contribute, at least in part, to the variation in virulence of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae.
