The use of electrical resistivity tomography in laboratory or field experiments for environmental purposes has been increasing in recent years. The development of commercial devices has thus far focused on the quality of measurements and their robustness in all field cases. However, both their costs and lack of flexibility to adapt to specific applications have limited their prevalence in the environmental sector. This article presents the development of a low-cost, open hardware resistivity meter to provide the scientific community with a robust and flexible tool for small-scale experiments. Called OhmPi, this basic resistivity meter features current injection and measurement functions associated with a multiplexer that allows performing automatic measurements with up to 32 electrodes (at a cost of less than $500). The device was first tested using a soil-analog electrical circuit to verify the reliability and robustness of the measurements. Results show that OhmPi offers a wide range of resistance measurements, from 0.2 to 1000 O, for contact resistances between 100 and 5000 O. Measurements were then carried out on a small field experiment, in demonstrating good stability of the OhmPi measurements, as well as a strong correlation with the output of a commercial reference instrument.

Les techniques d’imagerie par rayons X bénéficient des développements de la physique, des mathématiques et de l’informatique et proposent des outils d’analyse 3D des structures internes d’une grande variété d’objets. Cet article propose un état des lieux des différents instruments de tomographie par rayons X et discute des performances et limites de cette méthodologie. X-ray imaging techniques benefit from developments in physics, mathematics, and computer science, and provide analytical tools to study 3D internal structures of a wide range of objects. This article proposes an inventory of the different instruments of X-ray tomography and discusses the performances and limits.

The purpose of the study was to determine the correlation between medial tibial slope (MTS) and anterior tibial translation (ATT) in female patients with an ACL-deficient knee. It was hypothesized that female patients with a greater medial tibial slope had an increased anterior tibial translation compared to males. MTS and ATT were analysed in 276 patients (138 females and 138 males) with a complete ACL rupture from 2012 to 2016. The mean age was 32 ± 12 years. Previous surgery or additional ligament injury was excluded. CT scan was used for measuring MTS. Meniscal findings were reported. Anterior tibial translation and side to side difference (SSD) were measured by bilateral Telos™ stress radiography with knee flexion of 20°. There was no significant difference in ATT between females (5.4 ± 3.9) and males (5.8 ± 4.2), nor was there a difference in MTS between females (9.8 ± 2.8) and males (9.8 ± 2.7). This contribution focuses on a complex trachytic lava dome, the Puy de Dôme volcano, located in the Chaîne des Puys volcanic field (French Massif Central, France). We performed Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) acquisitions on the entire edifice in order to investigate its overall inner structure as well as to detail its summit area. The resulting large ERT dataset integrated a recently developed 3D inversion code based on an unstructured discretization of the geometrical model. The 3D inversion models obtained refine the existing geological model of the Puy de Dôme's inner structure obtained by previous geophysical studies. Evidence of impact of dietary factors on development of coronary artery calcification remains uncertain. The objective of the study was to evaluate the association between the intake carbohydrates, proteins, total fats, saturated fatty acids (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), trans fatty acids (TFA) cholesterol and fiber with cardiovascular risk. Cross-sectional analysis from 181 dyslipidemic patients. The Coronary Calcium Score (CCS) was used to measure cardiovascular risk. 24-hour recalls were applied and the Multiple Source Method was used to adjust dietary variability. The mean values of the cardiovascular risk categories were compared by analysis of variance, using ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis. Tukey's post-test was used for multiple analyzes. Simple and multiple binary logistic regression, was used as a measure of association between nutrient intake and cardiovascular risk. Age, male gender, comorbidities and drug treatment were significantly prevalent in those with CCS>100. The average total energy intake was 1315.6 kcal. Total energy and macronutrient intake were higher among men (p < 0.05). No significant results were found regarding the association between cardiovascular risk and macronutrient intake. Fiber intake was inversely associated with cardiovascular risk, regardless of confusion factors (OR:0.918; 95% CI:0.845-0.999; p=0.047). The resultes that there was no association between nutrientes analyzed to cardiovascular risk assessed by CCS. However, the increase of dietary fiber intake in 1 g/day has been shown to reduce the of future cardiovascular events in 8.2% among individuals in the highest risk category. Therefore, we strongly recommend that fiber intake be encouraged. La evidencia del impacto de los factores dietéticos en el desarrollo de la calcificación de la arteria coronaria sigue sin estar clara. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la asociación entre la ingesta de carbohidratos, proteínas, grasas totales, ácidos grasos saturados (AGS), ácidos grasos monoinsaturados (AGM), ácidos grasos poliinsaturados (AGP), ácidos grasos trans (AGT), colesterol y fibras con riesgo cardiovascular. Análisis transversal de 181 pacientes dislipidémicos. Para medir el riesgo cardiovascular se utilizó el puntaje de calcio coronario (PCC). Se aplicaron recordatorios de 24 horas y se utilizó el método de fuentes múltiples para ajustar la variabilidad dietética. Los valores medios de las categorías de riesgo cardiovascular se compararon mediante análisis de varianza, utilizando ANOVA y Kruskal-Wallis. La prueba posterior de Tukey se utilizó para múltiples análisis. The monitoring of underground cavities plays a key role in risk management policies. Mine and underground quarry stakeholders require relevant methodologies and practices to define and assess hazards associated with these structures. To monitor these structures, geophysical methods may offer an interesting compromise among operating cost, invasiveness, and risk assessment reliability. The use of conventional 3D-electric resistivity imaging (ERI) software validated on relatively flat media is not sufficient to efficiently assess complex 3D geometries such as underground mine pillars. We have developed a new approach to evaluate pillar condition by means of a sequential use of two techniques. First, the photogrammetric method yields a detailed 3D model of the pillar geometry from a set of pictures. Second, 3D-ERI is performed based on this suitable geometry. The methodology is tested on a synthetic model to evaluate the effect of various geometry resolutions on the inversion. We also evaluated the combination of the effect of measurement and geometry error. We performed a quasi 3D-ERI survey (three parallel electrode lines) on a real limestone mine pillar to determine the benefits and limitations of the combined procedure. First results revealed the capacity of the photogrammetric methods to obtain a high-precision geometry and its key role during the inversion process. Second results of the real case study revealed that a highly accurate geometry is required to detect accurately conductive anomalies in a complex 3D context.

Le projet VIRT.OS, financé par le Conseil régional d'Aquitaine, a permis la création d'une bibliothèque osseuse virtuelle. Sa vocation est d'aider les disciplines concernées par les études ostéologiques comme l'anthropologie biologique, l'archéozoologie et la paléontologie, l'anatomie et la paléopathologie. Les spécimens contenus dans cette ostéothèque virtuelle proviennent de différentes collections squelettiques et ostéoarchéologiques. Ils sont numérisés par scanner CT, lasergrammétrie ou photogrammétrie. L’objectif de VIRT.OS est de faciliter l'accès à des pièces ostéologiques d'intérêt scientifique ou patrimonial spécifique tout en assurant leur conservation. La base de données, continuellement enrichie, est stockée sur une plateforme dédiée hébergée par l'infrastructure Huma-Num. Les modèles ostéologiques 3D présentés sur le site web VIRT.OS sont disponibles pour la recherche, l'enseignement et la valorisation du patrimoine, à destination des chercheurs travaillant sur les os anciens et récents, humains et animaux, mais aussi pour les enseignants et le public. The VIRT.OS project, funded by the Aquitaine Regional Council, has permitted the creation of a virtual bone library. Its purpose is to assist disciplines concerned with osteological studies such as biological anthropology, archaeozoology, paleontology, anatomy and paleopathology. The specimens, contained in this virtual bone library, originate from different skeletal and osteoarchaeological collections, are digitized by CT scanner, lasergrammetry or photogrammetry. Its objective is to facilitate access to osteological pieces of specific interest, scientific or heritage, while ensuring their preservation. The database, which is continuously enriched, is stored on a dedicated platform hosted by the Huma-Num infrastructure. The 3D osteological models presented on the VIRT.OS website are available for research and teaching or heritage promotion, for researchers working on ancient and modern bones, both animal and human, teachers and the general public.

International audience; Purpose: To investigate the prevalence of vitreomacular interface abnormalities (VMIAs) in a French elderly glaucomatous population. Methods: Using a population-based study, the MONTRACHET (Maculopathy Optic Nerve nuTRition neurovAsCular and HEarT diseases) study conducted in Dijon from 2009 to 2013 in individuals older than 75 years, the prevalence of VMIAs was estimated on glaucoma patients. Results: A total of 1130 participants (2225 eyes) were included in the study. The mean age of participants was 82.3 +/- 3.8 years, and 62.74% were women. Regarding the frequency of all VMIAs, there was no statistical difference between glaucoma patients and nonglaucoma participants (51.85% vs. 53.92%, respectively, P = 0.372). In univariate analysis, vitreomacular adherences were more frequent in nonglaucoma participants (18.39% vs. 10.78%, P = 0.036). Epiretinal membranes were more frequent in the glaucomatous population (47.06% vs. 38.13%, P = 0.018). The prevalence of macular cysts was comparable in the two groups (7.84% vs. 5.64%, P = 0.262). Macular cysts were more frequent in eyes treated with preservative-free, IOP-lowering eye drops when compared with the eyes of nonglaucomatous participants treated with IOP-lowering eye drops containing a preservative (26.67% vs. 3.37% and 5.76%, respectively, P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, these results were no longer significant. Conclusions: The prevalence of VMIAs was high in this elderly population and similar in both glaucomatous and nonglaucomatous participants. The information provided by macular optical coherence tomography scans should be considered with caution when used for glaucoma management in elderly patients.

A method for the reconstruction of 2D tomographic images adapted to wood was presented, aiming to perform a nondestructive evaluation of standing trees. The proposed method takes into account the orthotropy property of wood material, performing an iterative process that approximated the curved rays. A slowness function was defined for every cell and a nonlinear regression allowed the mapping of the inner elastic constants. Four numerical configurations were tested representing real cases usually found in standing tree monitoring. These specific configurations allowed this work to focus on the analysis of the effect of anisotropy on image reconstruction. The reconstructed images using the proposed method were compared with a straight-ray reconstruction method (filtered back projection algorithm), highlighting a more detailed identification and quantification of the inner state of the anisotropic structure of the trunk.

Although DC electrical resistivity imaging is widely applied to dike investigation, either rapid 2D or high-resolution 3D approaches fail to address actual needs. An intermediate electrical resistivity imaging approach referred to as “3D–” is introduced in this paper. The methodology is based on existing tools, and it offers useful and sufficiently reliable 3D images of the investigated structure within a cost-effective and flexible procedure. The survey design, the model discretisation, and the thorough integration of a priori information are the main phases of this procedure. To demonstrate the benefits and limitations of this approach, it is applied to an existing stretch of embankment levee along the Loire River. A numerical study was carried out both on synthetic and real data to assess the 3D imaging capability of the approach and the influence of prior information on the inversion outputs. The important role of a priori information is shown to be even more essential here. The results demonstrate the efficiency and versatility of the 3D– approach for reliable and cost-effective investigations of long dikes.

A groundwater exploration work in the Tamanrasset region in southern Algeria was started in August 2016 to assess the water reserves in the hydrogeological system related to the Oued Tamanrasset underflow water table which overcomes a volcanic basement. Five (05) electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys were conducted in Tamanrasset area by using ABEM Terrameter LS system. the low electrical contrast between wet alluvium and water saturated alterites makes difficult the electrical response interpretation. to overcome the difficulties of interpretation of ERT profiles, field investigations, laboratory tests and software simulations, were carried out in order to clearly identify the structure of the hydrogeological system. The experimental investigation of the electrical characteristics of the alluvium as a function of water saturation was carried by the use of two devices (Wenner α and Schlumberger). Samples true resistivity values varies between 50 Ω.m for a 100% saturated sample and 1250 Ω.m for a 25% saturation sample. The interpretation of the measurements by the RES2DINV software made it possible to give 2D images of the subsoil up to a depth of 50 m. the electrical contrast between the bedrock and the overlying formations made it possible to identify it, however, it was difficult to distinguish alterites from alluvium. A methodology combining piezometric survey, geo-electrical measurements and field observations improves the interpretation of electrical tomography profiles and the application of the ERT method for accurate characterization of water resources in the Tamanrasset region.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) estimates an image of change in electrical properties within a body from stimulations and measurements at surface electrodes. There is significant interest in EIT as a tool to monitor and guide ventilation therapy in mechanically ventilated patients. In lung EIT, the EIT inverse problem is commonly linearized and only changes in electrical properties are reconstructed. Early algorithms reconstructed changes in resistivity, while most recent work using the finite element method reconstructs conductivity. Recently, we demonstrated that EIT images of ventilation can be misleading if the electrical contrasts within the thorax are not taken into account during the image reconstruction process. In this paper, we explore the effect of the choice of the reconstructed electrical properties (resistivity or conductivity) on the resulting EIT images. We show in simulation and experimental data that EIT images reconstructed with the same algorithm but with different parametrizations lead to large and clinically significant differences in the resulting images, which persist even after attempts to eliminate the impact of the parameter choice by recovering volume changes from the EIT images. Since there is no consensus among the most popular reconstruction algorithms and devices regarding the parametrization, this finding has implications for potential clinical use of EIT. We propose a program of research to develop reconstruction techniques that account for both the relationship between air volume and electrical properties of the lung and artefacts introduced by the linearization.

Zusammenfassung Tomographische Bildgebungsverfahren sind heute vor allem aus der Medizin und der zerstörungsfreien Prüfung bekannt. Sie werden aber auch als äußerst vielversprechend für die Analyse komplexer Strömungsvorgänge, etwa in chemischen Apparaten, erachtet. Besonderes Interesse besteht hierbei in der Aufklärung hydrodynamischer Phänomene in Mehrphasenapparaten, wie beispielsweise Blasensäulen, Kolonnen, Festbettreaktoren und Wirbelschichten, in denen die Hydrodynamik die Stoff- und Wärmetransportvorgänge sowie das makroskopische Reaktionsgeschehen entscheidend beeinflussen. Allerdings müssen tomographische Messverfahren für solche Anwendungen besonders schnell sein, da sich Strömungsstrukturen in einer räumlichen Skale von Millimetern im Allgemeinen im Millisekundenmaßstab ändern. In der jüngeren Vergangenheit wurden mit der Gittersensormesstechnik und der ultraschnellen Röntgentomographie zwei Messverfahren entwickelt, die diese Anforderungen erfüllen. Ihre Funktionsprinzipien und Anwendungen werden in diesem Artikel beschrieben.

Knowledge of soil moisture dynamics and its spatial variability is essential to improve our understanding of root water uptake and soil moisture redistribution at the local scale and the field scale. We investigated the potential and limitations of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) to measure three-dimensional soil moisture changes and variability in a large, undisturbed, cropped soil column and examined the interactions between soil and root system. Our analysis sustained the value of ERT as a tool to monitor and quantify water contents and water content changes in the soil, as long as the root biomass does not influence the observed resistivity. This is shown using a global water mass balance and a local validation using time domain reflectometry (TDR) probes. The observed soil moisture variability was rather high compared to values reported in the literature for bare soil. The measured water depletion rate, being the result of combined eff ects of root water uptake and soil water redistribution, was compared with the evaporative demand and root length densities. We observed a gradual downward movement of the maximum water depletion rate combined with periods of redistribution when there was less transpiration. Finally, the maximum root length density was observed at −70 cm depth, pointing out that root architecture can strongly depend on soil characteristics and states. The M w 7.2 Altay (Chuya) earthquake of 27 September 2003 that occurred in Gorny Altay (southern Siberia, Russia) is the first event of this magnitude to occur in the region in historical time. The 60 km long surface ruptures of the right-lateral event follow a preexisting but previously unmapped northwest–southeast fault trace along the northern slope of the North Chuya range. Additional secondary coseismic ruptures were also observed on adjacent faults. The earthquake triggered landslides, rock falls, and liquefaction, as well as destruction of houses and other construction in the Kurai and Chuya basins. The 2003 event induced several thousand aftershocks during the years after the mainshock that formed a cloud of epicenters aligned with the main coseismic rupture trace. The local earthquake tomography of the event source shows the correspondence between the fault trace at the surface and a long narrow low-velocity zone, penetrating vertically into the crust down to a depth of 15–17 km. If the three-dimensional (3D) geometry of the aftershock cloud approximates the ruptured fault plane at first order, then the fault is mainly vertical, or slightly southwest dipping, confirming the right-lateral-reverse kinematics of the fault, compatible with northeast–southwest shortening accommodated by a combination of right-lateral and thrust faults. Together with the average surface displacement observed in the field ( Δu 1–2 m), the surface of the fault plane determined by the aftershocks distribution (80×17 km) gives a magnitude M w ∼7.2, in good agreement with the Harvard determination. Natural exposures produced by the 2003 surface faulting, together with previous paleoseismic observations across the primary and secondary earthquake-induced features, have revealed the occurrence of several strong events (magnitudes about 7–8) during the last 5000 yr. The characteristics of the Altay event suggest that the Gorny Altay region, similar to Mongolia and Gobi, is characterized by large infrequent M 7–8 earthquakes along faults moving at rates of a few mm/yr or less.

Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys have been carried out in eastern Senegal for investigating two-stepped lateritic systems developed upon crystalline basement rocks. The geo-electrical pseudo-sections derived from ERT data provide a broad view of the lateritic weathering mantle, which is characterised by a decrease in resistivity with increasing depth. High resistivities characterise hardened ferruginous materials, in particular, the ferricrete, while the lower resistivities are related to the clayey horizons such as the saprolite. GPR provides high-resolution and continuous subsurface data on the hardened ferruginous horizons. The underlying clay horizons, however, drastically restricted the investigation depth. An anomalous area showing an obvious disruption of the reflections was detected in one of the radar records, suggesting contrasting iron and clay contents of superimposed lateritic weathering materials with differentiated porosity rate and kaolinite amount. Both ERT and GPR allow quite similar investigation depths of the hardened ferruginous surface horizons. Observations from trial boreholes located near the profiles contribute to better interpretation of the ERT and GPR results. The thickness of the weathering horizons depicted from ERT and GPR data roughly corresponds to that measured in the boreholes. The two geophysical methods are affected in different ways by lateritic terrains, but ERT and GPR surveys combined with borehole observation help to reduce ambiguous geological interpretations. ERT and GPR images show the variability of the lateritic weathering facies identified in the boreholes of each landsurface, ‘Middle-’ and ‘High-glacis’, depending on different erosion and weathering-ferruginisation processes that have shaped these landsurfaces and allowed the development of more or less mature underlying lateritic weathering profiles.

International audience; Measuring the full ion velocity distribution function (IVDF) by non-intrusive techniques can improve our understanding of the ionization processes and beam dynamics at work in electric thrusters. In this paper, a Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) tomographic reconstruction technique is applied to the measurement of the IVDF in the plume of a miniature Hall effect thruster. A setup is developed to move the laser axis along two rotation axes around the measurement volume. The fluorescence spectra taken from different viewing angles are combined using a tomographic reconstruction algorithm to build the complete 3D (in phase space) time-averaged distribution function. For the first time, this technique is used in the plume of a miniature Hall effect thruster to measure the full distribution function of the xenon ions. Two examples of reconstructions are provided, in front of the thruster nose-cone and in front of the anode channel. The reconstruction reveals the features of the ion beam, in particular on the thruster axis where a toroidal distribution function is observed. These findings are consistent with the thruster shape and operation. This technique, which can be used with other LIF schemes, could be helpful in revealing the details of the ion production regions and the beam dynamics. Using a more powerful laser source, the current implementation of the technique could be improved to reduce the measurement time and also to reconstruct the temporal evolution of the distribution function.

The present-day crustal structure of the Andean chain results from deformation processes and magmatic activity since the onset of subduction. One line of investigation to resolve questions about the mechanism of crustal thickening is to get information about the composition of the crust and upper-mantle by imaging the structures in velocity and Poisson's ratio (or Vp/Vs). A high density seismic network was operated during six months in 1994 across the whole Andean chain. The P and S travel times of the best located local earthquakes, mainly situated in the subduction zone, have been inverted for Vp and Vp/Vs using Thurber's 3D iterative simultaneous inversion method. The resulting models, giving short-scale information about the crustal and upper-mantle composition, provide new limits on the respective involvement of crustal shortening and magmatism in the thickening of the Andean crust. Beneath the Western Cordillera, the seismic properties are well explained by typical active volcanic arc processes, and the thickening of the crust is explained by magmatic addition. Conversely, beneath the Central Altiplano Basin and the Eastern Cordillera, our results preclude significant volume of magmatic addition from the mantle and reinforce crustal shortening as the main thickening process. Moreover, cratonic lower crust and subcontinental lithospheric upper-mantle are observed under the Eastern Cordillera up to 67°W, evidence of the underthrusting of the Brazilian craton, which drives the crustal shortening. Beneath the Central Altiplano Basin, a thin lithospheric mantle is observed above a well marked asthenospheric wedge which extends in depth below the western part of the Eastern Cordillera. Thus partial melt is observed in the shallow mantle west of the Western Cordillera up to the Brazilian craton.

Arrival-times of local events recorded in northern Chile and southern Bolivia were used to determine the P velocity structure above the subducted Nazca plate. The data were recorded between June and November 1994 by the French “Lithoscope” network: 41 vertical and 14 three-component short-period seismic stations were installed along a 700 km long profile crossing the main structures of the Andean chain, from the Coastal Cordillera to the Subandean Zone. The inversion method used is a modified version of Thurber’s 3D iterative simultaneous inversion code. The results were compared with a model obtained from previous German nearby refraction seismic studies and supplemented by field geological observations. The relocated seismicity is consistent with an ∼30° dipping slab between 0 and 170 km depth. We found a variation of about 30 km of the Moho depth along the profile. The crustal thickness is about 47 km under the Coastal Cordillera, 70 km under the Western Cordillera and the western part of the Eastern Cordillera, and 60–65 km beneath the Altiplano. Close to the surface, a good agreement between the velocity model and the geological structures is observed. Generally, in the upper crust, high velocities coincide with zones where basement is present near the surface. Low velocities are well correlated with the presence of very thick sedimentary basins or volcanic material. At greater depth, the trend of the velocity model is consistent with the existence of asymmetrical west-dipping imbricated blocks, overthrusting toward the east, which explain the asymmetrical pattern of the sedimentary basins. Beneath the Western Cordillera, the active volcanic arc, a large zone of low velocity is observed and interpreted to be due to partially molten material. A clear velocity contrast appears between the western and eastern parts of the upper mantle beneath the Andes; this geometry suggests the existence of a low velocity wedge in the mantle above the slab and the presence of a thick old lithosphere in the eastern part of the Andes.

The Hoggar region is known as one of the most important swells in the African continent. Its altitude culminates at 2908 m in the Tahat hill (Atakor). The Hoggar and other massifs of central Africa (Air, Eghei, Tibesti, Darfur, Cameroon mount, …) form a system of domal uplifts with similar scale, morphology and volcanic activity. The knowledge of the structure beneath the Hoggar swell will help us to understand the origin of continental swells. In order to get an image of the lithosphere in this region, we have performed a teleseismic field experiment. The 33 short-period seismic stations have been maintained for 2 1/2 month along a 700-km long NNW–SSW profile. This experiment crossed the Central Hoggar and extended northward into the In-Salah Sahara basin which is characterized by high heat flow values of deep origin. The high quality of the data recorded during this experiment allows us to perform a velocity inversion. The Hoggar appears to be characterized by lower mantle velocities. The anomalous zone extends from the upper lithosphere to the mantle. The weak velocity contrast is interpreted in agreement with gravity, geothermal and petrological data as due to extensive mantle modifications inherited from Cenozoic volcanic activity. It confirms that the Hoggar swell is not due to a large-scale uplift of hot asthenospheric materials but corresponds to a now cooled-off modified mantle. On the contrary, local low-velocity zones associated with the Atakor and Tahalra volcanic districts show that hot materials still exist at depths in relation with recent basaltic volcanism.

Two-dimensional electrical resistivity tomography has been employed to investigate the subsurface structure of a thick lateritic weathering mantle overlying a granitic bedrock in southeastern Senegal. The resistivities were measured along two kilometric profiles insuring continuous coverage. Exploration pits exposed the different weathering layers, i.e., a saprolite, a mottled zone, a soft ferricrete and a ferricrete, whose respective thicknesses were used to constrain the measured apparent resistivity, despite their spatial variations. Colour-modulated pseudo-sections of apparent resistivity versus pseudo-depth including the groundsurface topography clearly show spatial variations in electrical properties of the weathering layers since their apparent resistivity changes faster than their respective thickness. The data from a cross-borehole survey along with estimates of resistivity for aquifers and granite were integrated into the pseudo-sections to provide more useful results about the real resistivity ranges of the weathering layers. The resulting geo-electrical images document the geometric relations between the different layer boundaries, in particular those of the aquifers with the bedrock and groundsurface topographies. The spatial relationships between the granitic bedrock and groundsurface topographies suggest that a large part of the actual lateritic weathering mantle is allochthonous. This also implies that the actual topography of the bedrock surface was mainly shaped by weathering processes while the hillslope geomorphic patterns result from erosion processes or lateritic weathering of reworked materials leading to ferricrete development according to the different landforms observed. It is suggested that climatic changes were implied in the landscape evolution of our study area.

The electrical properties of several tens of metres of lateritic weathering mantle were investigated by using electrical resistivity tomography "ERT" in two basement areas of eastern Senegal. The field survey was conducted along two profiles providing continuous coverage. Colour-modulated pseudosections of apparent resistivity vs. pseudo-depth were plotted for all survey lines, giving an approximate image of the subsurface structure. In the area underlain by granitic basement, the pseudosection suggests a very inhomogeneous weathered layer in which the apparent resistivity changes more rapidly than thickness. In the second area, underlain by schists, the lateral changes in electrical properties are less pronounced than those of the granitic area. Interpretation of 2D Wenner resistivity data yielded considerable detail about the regolith, even without pit information. In both areas, the near-surface topsoil comprising undersaturated lateritic material is highly resistive. The intermediate layer with low resistivities "e.g., 20-100 m" contains clays including small quantities of water. The third, highly resistive layer reflects the granitic basement. Comparison of ERT survey results with pit information shows general agreement and suggests that ERT can be used as a fast and efficient exploration tool to map the thick lateritic weathering mantle in tropical basement areas with hard rock geology. Near Surface Geoscience 2012 - 18th European Meeting of Environmental and Engineering Geophysics, PARIS, FRANCE, 03-/09/2012 - 05/09/2012; In France, EDF (Électricité De France) is in charge of managing the large hydraulic structure stock dedicated to producing hydroelectricity. This responsability is associated with high economical and safety issues. Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI) is being widely used on earth embankment dikes, either for extensive survey of large sections (a few km) or for higher resolution surveys on shorter sections (a few 100m). However, the processing of extensive longitudinal survey with conventional 2.5D software is likely to yield image artefacts. This study aims to show that a bad management of the dike complexity in the inversion process is the origin of these artifacts. To overcome this limitation, a new inversion algorithm specially created to take into account the complex behaviour of the dike is presented. This development aims at filling the gap between more classical 2D and purely 3D approaches, by optimising a compromise between acquisition cost and model reliability. Applied to real data sets this tool supplies a new understanding of the interpretation capability of the inversion results.

The velocity structure in the crest beneath the central Andes of northern Bolivia is obtained by the simultaneous inversion of local earthquake arrival-time data for velocity and hypocentral parameters. The data were recorded between October 1990 and February 1991 by the French "Lithoscope" network; the 34 vertical, short-period seismic stations were installed along a 320-km-long profile crossing two main morphological units of the Andean chain; the Altiplano and the Eastern Cordillera. The arrival times of seismic waves generated by earthquakes located in the subduction zone of the Nazca plate underneath the South American plate were inverted using a modified version of Thurber's 3-D iterative simultaneous inversion code. The results are consistent with the inversion of teleseismic travel-time residuals from the same network and closely correlate with the mapped surface geological features. The Altiplano Basin is characterized by a low-velocity zone down to 20 km, enclosed by the San Andres and Laurani faults. At the surface, the Cordillera Real fault zone (CRFZ) bounds to the west the high P-wave velocity anomaly lying under the axial zone of the Eastern Cordillera. The velocity discontinuity dips steeply to the southwest, to the bottom of the crust. From the velocity model, the depth of the Moho is estimated to be 66 km under the Altiplano. Moreover, the different behaviour of P- and S-waves found below the Western Cordillera and above the slab is consistent with the presence of partially melted asthenosphere that may be responsible for the magmatic activity. Finally, the seismicity defines, between 90 and 225 kin, a part of the slab dipping to the north-northeast with a low angle of about 30 ° .

International audience; In preparation of future multiobject spectrographs (MOS) whose one of the major role is to provide an extensive statistical studies of high redshifted galaxies surveyed, the demonstrator CANARY has been designed to tackle technical challenges related to open-loop adaptive optics (AO) control with jointed Natural Guide Star and Laser Guide Star tomography. We have developed a point spread function (PSF) reconstruction algorithm dedicated to multiobject adaptive optics systems using system telemetry to estimate the PSF potentially anywhere in the observed field, a prerequisite to postprocess AO-corrected observations in integral field spectroscopy. We show how to handle off-axis data to estimate the PSF using atmospheric tomography and compare it to a classical approach that uses on-axis residual phase from a truth sensor observing a natural bright source. We have reconstructed over 450 on-sky CANARY PSFs and we get bias/1-sigma standard-deviation (std) of 1.3/4.8 on the H-band Strehl ratio (SR) with 92.3% of correlation between reconstructed and sky SR. On the full-width at half-maximum, we get, respectively, 2.94 mas, 19.9 mas, and 88.3% for the bias, std, and correlation. The reference method achieves 0.4/3.5/95% on the SR and 2.71 mas/14.9 mas/92.5% on the FWHM for the bias/std/correlation.

Cancers et maladies cardio-vasculaires sont responsables de plus de 40 % des décès dans le monde. De nombreuses personnes souffrent par ailleurs quotidiennement de ces maladies. En réduire la fréquence dans le futur passe avant tout par une adaptation de notre mode de vie et une prévention accrue, éclairées par une connaissance plus approfondie des mécanismes de ces maladies. Il est également crucial d'améliorer les diagnostics et les traitements actuels afin de mieux prendre en charge les malades d'aujourd'hui et de demain.Lorsque le tableau clinique présenté par un patient n'est pas clair, de nombreuses techniques d'imagerie médicale permettent d'affiner le diagnostic, de préciser le pronostic et de suivre l'évolution des maladies au cours du temps. Ces mêmes techniques sont également utilisées en recherche fondamentale pour faire progresser la connaissance du fonctionnement normal et pathologique du corps humain. Il s'agit par exemple de l'échographie, de l'imagerie par résonance magnétique, de la tomodensitométrie à rayons X ou encore de la tomographie par émission de positrons (TEP).Certaines de ces techniques mettent en évidence le métabolisme de molécules, comme le glucose et certains acides aminés. C'est le cas de la tomographie par émission de positrons, dans laquelle une petite quantité de molécules marquées avec un élément radioactif est injectée au patient. Ces molécules se concentrent de préférence dans les endroits du corps humain où elles sont utilisées. Instables, les noyaux radioactifs se désintègrent en émettant un anti-électron, encore appelé positron. Chaque positron s'annihile ensuite à proximité du lieu d'émission avec un électron du corps du patient, provoquant l'émission simultanée de deux photons de haute énergie dans deux directions opposées. Après avoir traversé les tissus, ces photons sont captés par un anneau de détecteurs entourant le patient. Sur base de l'ensemble des événements collectés, un algorithme de reconstruction produit enfin une image de la distribution du traceur radioactif.La tomographie par émission de positrons permet notamment d'évaluer l'efficacité du traitement des tumeurs avant que la taille de celles-ci n'ait changé, ce qui permet d'aider à décider de poursuivre ou non le traitement en cours. En cardiologie, cette technique permet de quantifier la viabilité du muscle cardiaque après un infarctus et aide ainsi à évaluer la pertinence d'une intervention chirurgicale.Plusieurs facteurs limitent la précision des images TEP. Parmi ceux-ci, on trouve l'effet de volume partiel et le mouvement du coeur.L'effet de volume partiel mène à des images floues, de la même manière qu'un objectif d'appareil photo incorrectement mis au point produit des photographies floues. Deux possibilités s'offrent aux photographes pour éviter cela :soit améliorer la mise au point de leur objectif, soit retoucher les images après les avoir réalisées ;améliorer la mise au point de l'objectif peut s'effectuer dans l'espace des données (ajouter une lentille correctrice avant l'objectif) ou dans l'espace des images (ajouter une lentille correctrice après l'objectif).Le mouvement cardiaque provoque également une perte de netteté des images, analogue à l'effet de flou sur une photographie d'une voiture de course réalisée avec un grand temps de pose. Classiquement, on peut augmenter la netteté d'une image en diminuant le temps de pose. Cependant, dans ce cas, moins de photons traversent l'objectif et l'image obtenue est plus bruitée.On pourrait alors imaginer obtenir de meilleurs images en suivant la voiture au moyen de l'appareil photo. De cette manière, la voiture serait à la fois nette et peu corrompue par du bruit, car beaucoup de photons pourraient être détectés.En imagerie TEP, l'effet de volume partiel est dû à de nombreux facteurs dont le fait que le positron ne s'annihile pas exactement à l'endroit de son émission et que le détecteur frappé par un photon n'est pas toujours correctement identifié. La solution passe par une meilleure modélisation de la physique de l'acquisition au cours de la reconstruction, qui, en pratique est complexe et nécessite d'effectuer des approximations.La perte de netteté due au mouvement du coeur est classiquement traitée en figeant le mouvement dans plusieurs images successives au cours d'un battement cardiaque. Cependant, une telle solution résulte en une diminution du nombre de photons, et donc en une augmentation du bruit dans les images. Tenir compte du mouvement de l'objet pendant la reconstruction TEP permettrait d'augmenter la netteté en gardant un bruit acceptable. On peut également penser à superposer différentes images recalées au moyen du mouvement.Au cours de ce travail, nous avons étudié des méthodes qui tirent le meilleur parti possible des informations fournies par les événements détectés. Pour ce faire, nous avons choisi de baser nos reconstructions sur une liste d'événements contenant la position exacte des détecteurs et le temps exact d'arrivée des photons, au lieu de l'histogramme classiquement utilisé.L'amélioration de résolution passe par la connaissance de l'image d'une source ponctuelle radioactive produite par la caméra.À la suite d'autres travaux, nous avons mesuré cette image et nous l'avons modélisée, pour la première fois, au moyen d'une fonction spatialement variable, non-gaussienne et asymétrique. Nous avons ensuite intégré cette fonction dans un algorithme de reconstruction, dans l'espace image. C'est la seule possibilité pratique dans le cas d'acquisitions en mode liste. Nous avons ensuite comparé les résultats obtenus avec un traitement de l'image après la reconstruction.Dans le cadre de la correction de mouvement cardiaque, nous avons opté pour l'étude de la reconstruction simultanée de l'image et du déplacement, sans autres informations externes que les données TEP et le signal d'un électrocardiogramme. Nous avons ensuite choisi d'étudier la qualité de ces estimateurs conjoints intensité-déplacement au moyen de leur variance. Nous avons étudié la variance minimale que peut atteindre un estimateur conjoint intensité-mouvement, sur base des données TEP uniquement, au moyen d'un outil appelé borne de Cramer-Rao. Dans ce cadre, nous avons étudié différentes manières existantes d'estimer la borne de Cramer-Rao et nous avons proposé une nouvelle méthode d'estimation de la borne de Cramer-Rao adaptée à des images de grande dimension. Nous avons enfin mis en évidence que la variance de l'algorithme classique OSEM était supérieure à celle prédite par la borne de Cramer-Rao. En ce qui concerne les estimateurs combinés intensité-déplacement, nous avons observé la diminution de la variance minimale possible sur les intensités lorsque le déplacement était paramétrisé sur des fonctions spatiales lisses.Ce travail est organisé comme suit. Le chapitre théorique commence par brosser brièvement le contexte historique de la tomographie par émission de positrons. Nous avons souhaité insister sur le fait que l'évolution des idées n'est romantique et linéaire qu'à grande échelle. Nous abordons ensuite la description physique de l'acquisition TEP. Dans un deuxième chapitre, nous rappelons quelques éléments de la théorie de l'estimation et de l'approximation et nous traitons des problèmes inverses en général et de la reconstruction TEP en particulier.La seconde partie aborde le problème du manque de netteté des images et la solution que nous avons choisi d'y apporter :une modélisation dans l'espace image de la réponse impulsionnelle de la caméra, en tenant compte de ses caractéristiques non gaussienne, asymétrique et spatialement variable. Nous présentons également le résultat de la comparaison avec une déconvolution post-reconstruction. Les résultats présentés dans ce chapitre ont fait l'objet d'une publication dans la revue Physics in Medicine and Biology.Dans un troisième volet, nous abordons la correction de mouvement. SUMMARY Teleseismic P- and PKP-arrival times recorded by a network of 40 seismic stations deployed along a 300 km profile across the Adamawa Plateau at the northern end of the Volcanic Line in central Cameroon provide constraints on lithospheric thickness and anisotropy within the subcrustal lithosphere. These data indicate a thinned lithosphere beneath the Central African Shear Zone, where seismologically defined asthenosphere upwells from a depth of about 190 km to about 120 km in a relatively narrow belt. Thus it has only a low-amplitude effect on the observed gravity anomalies; the Bouguer gravity high over the Garoua Rift is consistent with crustal thinning beneath it. An abrupt change of the lithospheric thickness beneath the Northern Boundary Fault correlates with both the topographic relief and a distinct change of the orientation of relatively high- and low-velocity directions, which we infer to be due to anisotropy within the subcrustal lithosphere. This fault may represent an important accretionary suture zone dividing lithospheric blocks that originated in different tectonic settings and acquired different, frozen-in anisotropy.

Characterizing the hydrogeological functioning of complex crystalline aquifers requires a precise assessment of their structural and hydrodynamic heterogeneities. This study shows how the joint use of TDEM, ERT and MRS enables to characterize both alterites and weathered-fissured zones. Moreover, with complementary data such as water table measurements and hydraulic tests, the characterization of the fractured zone is also possible. A conceptual hydrogeological model is then proposed from a case study in India, thanks to this joint use of geophysical and hydrological data.

It is a key variable to understand the convection and the intense precipitations. Now the quantitative precipitation forecast does not improve since about twenty years partly because the measure of the water vapour variability is a lack of the current observing systems. The accuracy of integrated water vapour GPS measurements has been shown since about ten years. The GPS tomography allows nowadays to retrieve the 3D field of water vapour. This dissertation presents the theory (least square method and Kalman filtering), the validation and the applications of the GPS tropospheric tomography software LOFTT_K developed during this thesis. The tomography has been validated with simulations, meteorological modelling and independent measurements. The tomography has been then used to understand the small scale interactions between the local (the breezes) and mesoscale (the mistral) dynamics. The meteorological GPS has also allowed to characterize the humidity variations during rain events in the Cévennes (South France). Finally the GPS tomography at mesoscale has shown a mechanism of humidity « loading » of the atmosphere before a convection initiation case.; La vapeur d'eau joue un rôle majeur dans le fonctionnement climatique et météorologique de la Terre. C'est notamment une variable clé pour comprendre les phénomènes de convection à l'origine des précipitations intenses. Or les prévisions quantitatives des pluies ne s'améliorent pas depuis 20 ans parce que - entre autres - la mesure de la variabilité de la vapeur d'eau est une lacune des systèmes d'observations. La précision de la mesure du contenu intégrée en vapeur d'eau par le système GPS est démontrée depuis une dizaine d'années. La tomographie GPS permet aujourd'hui de restituer le champ 3D de vapeur d'eau. Ce mémoire présente la théorie (méthodes des moindres carrés et filtre de Kalman), la validation et les applications du logiciel LOFTT_K de tomographie troposphérique GPS développé pendant cette thèse. La tomographie a été validée grâce à des simulations, des modèles météorologiques et des mesures indépendantes. Elle a ensuite été utilisée pour comprendre les interactions petites échelles entre les dynamiques locales (les brises) et de mésoéchelle (le mistral). Le GPS météorologique a permis aussi de caractériser les variations d'humidité pendant les pluies cévenoles. Enfin la tomographie GPS régionale a mis en évidence un mécanisme de chargement en humidité de l'atmosphère avant l'initiation de la convection.A l'avenir, les données GPS seront assimilées dans les modèles opérationnels de prévision météorologique. Elles doivent aussi servir à approfondir la connaissance des relations entre les précipitations, la convection et la dynamique de la vapeur d'eau.

National audience; En tomographie, les méthodes de reconstruction itératives nécessitent une modélisation discrète du processus d'obtention des mesures. La représentation de l'objet d'intérêt est le point de départ à l'élaboration d'un modèle de projection tomographique sur le détecteur, précis et rapide. Les modèles conventionnels ray driven et distance driven, construits à partir d'indicatrices de voxels, ont l'inconvénient d'être fortement anisotropes. Nous proposons un modèle utilisant des fonctions de bases B-splines de degré adéquat, nous fournissant un projecteur quasiment isotrope. Une approximation de la projection par une B-spline séparable sur le détecteur conduit à un modèle efficace en géométrie parallèle et conique, de qualité supérieure aux modèles conventionnels. Nous montrons notamment que l'erreur de modélisation est améliorée d'un facteur 10 par rapport au modèle distance driven. Nous illustrons l'amélioration de la qualité de reconstruction apportée par notre modèle sur des simulations du fantôme de Shepp-Logan, en utilisant une méthode itérative de reconstruction régularisée.

National audience; La tomographie dynamique est la reconstruction, à partir de projections, d'objets induits d'un mouvement, le plus souvent périodique (e.g. le cycle respiratoire chez un patient). Le problème de reconstruction devient alors 4-D (3-D spatiale + temps), à données parcimonieuses puisqu'une projection ne correspondra qu'à un instant spécifique de la séquence 4-D d'un cycle (ou période). Nous traitons la reconstruction dynamique comme un problème inverse global avec un terme d'attache aux données utilisant la totalité des projections. Les paramètres estimés sont l'image 4-D d'un cycle dynamique de l'objet. Le modèle de reprojection est calé temporellement sur le cycle d'acquisition des projections grâce à un signal temporel 1-D décrivant l'évolution dynamique de l'objet, et sa périodicité. Une étape d'interpolation temporelle de la séquence 4-D sur les dates d'acquisition précède alors la projection standard à un instant donné. Nous injectons également une régularisation spatio-temporelle de l'objet sous forme d'une variation totale 4-D. La régularisation apporte alors la corrélation temporelle entre les différentes tranches reconstruites, et permet ainsi d'extraire au mieux l'information fournie par les données, sans aucune estimation ni compensation de mouvement. Nous faisons la démonstration de notre approche sur des reconstructions 2-D+t d'un fantôme mécanique acquises sur un scanner Cone-Beam. La régularisation spatio-temporelle apporte un gain sans équivoque sur la qualité des reconstructions dynamiques. Des premiers résultats 4-D (3-D+t) encourageants sont obtenus sur données cliniques d'un patient en respiration.

This thesis is dedicated towards the creation of a new direction-sensitive tool for muon flux measurement based on a thin time projection chamber with a Micromegas readout, to achieve a compact detector with an angular resolution compatible with civil engineering and geophysics imagery and monitoring applications. The main motivation is to develop a detector capable to fill the technological gap for applications with compactness and transportability constraints. The dissertation provides a review of the different existing muon detection technologies and their diverse fields of application. Two muon imaging techniques are introduced: transmission and scattering muography. Transmission muography, more suitable for big targets, is based on the attenuation of the natural-occurring cosmic-muon flux due to the opacity of the material they traverse. This non-destructive, passive technique provides original information that can be used for imaging purposes. The work covers the methodology used towards the characterization of the incidental muon flux both on the surface and in underground conditions. A detailed description of the physical processes triggered by the passage of a muon through the detector is provided. Results of the simulations of the signal formation processes are presented and discussed to justify the design choices of the key components so as to meet performance requirements in term of temporal, spatial and angular resolution. The influence of operational or external parameters such as the gain, temperature or presence of contaminants is covered as well. The thesis describes in detail the principal phases of design and assembly of the MUST2 detector, including: (i) the design of the Micromegas readout layout, (ii) the choice of gas, (iii) the conception of an electric field homogenizer, (iv) the choice of the electronics instrumentation and its trigger signal, and (v) the creation of an auxiliary system to manage the gas. The versatility of MUST2 has been proved with the successful use of different trigger options and electronics. The data is acquired by means of software developed for the CERN’s Scalable Readout System electronics and subsequently analyzed with a muon trajectory reconstruction algorithm, which retrieves the: time of passage, 2D position, zenith and azimuth angles of the muons traversing the detector. The characteristics, performance and limitations of the data acquisition chain are presented and evaluated, a series of guidelines towards the improvement of its efficiency of are provided. A series of characterization tests has been carried out in different environments: controlled muon beam, open sky, at the bottom of a valley and in underground conditions. These tests have enabled a better understanding of the performance of the detector and allowed to tune up its operational parameters. Despite the weak statistics of the test runs, the measured muon flux has shown a good correlation with the surrounding target volumes. A campaign of measurements in real field conditions has been carried out at the Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt (Vaucluse, France) dam. The experimental results obtained are in consonance with the values anticipated by the digital model, the field transportability and the capability to perform long-term out-of-lab measurements have been demonstrated. On the downside, the impact of the external temperature on the data acquisition should be balanced out to get a steady acquisition and monitor the temporal evolution of the muon flux. In conclusion, the successful proof-of-concept trial allows to validate the MUST2 camera for transmission muography purposes.; Cette thèse est dédiée à la création d'un nouvel outil pour la mesure directionnelle du flux muonique basé sur une chambre de projection temporelle fine avec un plan de lecture Micromegas, afin d’obtenir un détecteur compact avec une résolution angulaire compatible avec les applications d’imagerie ou de monitoring en génie civil et géophysique. La principale motivation est de développer un détecteur capable de combler le vide technologique pour les applications ayant des contraintes d’encombrement et de transportabilité. Cette thèse fournit une revue des différentes technologies de détection de muons existantes et de leurs divers domaines d’application. Deux techniques de mesure de muons sont présentées : la muographie par transmission ou par diffusion. La muographie par transmission, mieux adaptée aux grandes cibles, est basée sur l'atténuation du flux naturel de muons cosmiques due à l'opacité des matériaux traversés. Cette technique passive et non-destructive fournit des informations originales qui pourront être intégrées dans une démarche d’imagerie. Le manuscrit présente la méthodologie utilisée pour la caractérisation du flux incident de muons à la fois en surface et dans des conditions souterraines. Une description détaillée des processus physiques déclenchés par le passage d'un muon à travers le détecteur est fournie. Les résultats des simulations des processus de formation du signal sont présentés et commentés pour justifier les choix du design des composants clés afin de répondre aux exigences de performance quant à résolutions temporelle, spatiale et angulaire. L'influence des paramètres opérationnels ou externes tels que le gain, la température ou la présence de contaminants est également traitée. La thèse étudie en détail les principales phases de conception et d'assemblage du détecteur MUST2, incluant (i) le design du plan de lecture Micromegas, (ii) le choix du gaz, (iii) le design d'un élément homogénéisateur de champ électrique (iv) le choix de l'instrumentation électronique et du signal de déclenchement associé au passage du muon, et (v) la création d'un système auxiliaire de gestion du gaz. La polyvalence du détecteur MUST2 a été prouvée avec l'utilisation réussie de différentes options de déclenchement et d’acquisition. Les données sont obtenues au travers d’un logiciel développé pour le système d’acquisition modulaire du CERN SRS, puis analysées avec un algorithme de reconstruction de la trajectoire, qui récupère le temps de passage, la position 2D, les angles zénith et azimut des muons qui traversent le détecteur. Les caractéristiques, les performances et les limites de la chaîne d'acquisition de données sont présentées et évaluées. Une série de directives visant à améliorer l’efficacité de la chaîne d'acquisition est proposée. Une série de tests de caractérisation a été effectuée dans différents environnements : faisceau contrôlé de muons, ciel ouvert, au fond d'une vallée et dans des conditions souterraines. Ces tests ont contribué à une meilleure compréhension des performances du détecteur et ont permis de régler ses paramètres opérationnels. Malgré les faibles statistiques des tests, les flux mesurés montrent une bonne corrélation avec les environnements ciblés. Une campagne de mesures en conditions réelles a été menée sur le barrage de Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt (Vaucluse). Les résultats expérimentaux obtenus, sont conformes aux valeurs anticipées par le modèle numérique, la transportabilité sur le terrain et la capacité à effectuer des mesures hors laboratoire à long terme ont été démontrées. En revanche, l’impact de la température externe sur l’acquisition des données devra être compensée pour obtenir une acquisition stable permettant de surveiller l’évolution temporelle du flux de muons. En conclusion, les bons résultats obtenus lors de ces tests permettent de valider la caméra MUST2 à des fins de muographie en transmission.

Université de la Méditerranée - Aix-Marseille II; Cette étude est consacrée à la caractérisation d'objets enfouis dans des sédiments marins à partir du champ acoustique diffusé par ces objets. Nous nous proposons de classifier les cibles par imagerie acoustique en nous inspirant des techniques de tomographie ultrasonore. Ce travail s'inscrit dans le cadre de l'étude des problèmes inverses d'ondes, c'est à dire l'interrogation d'un milieu par une onde qui dans notre cas est une onde acoustique. La méthode d'inversion étudiée ici fait appel à une représentation intégrale de domaine du champ diffusé par la cible et à une linéarisation par l'intermédiaire de l'approximation de Born au premier ordre. Les équations ainsi obtenues sont ensuite discrétisées par une technique de collocation. La résolution du problème inverse se ramène alors à l'inversion d'un système linéaire, en général non carré et mal conditionné. Une solution stable a été obtenue à l'aide d'une décomposition en valeurs singulières associée à une régularisation de Tikhonov. Les performances de l'algorithme d'inversion ont d'abord été testées sur les données numériques. Une étude expérimentale a également été menée au laboratoire avec des cibles en silicone. Ces objets ont d'abord été plongés dans l'eau afin de comparer les reconstructions obtenues avec des images tomographiques classiques. Les cibles ont ensuite été enfouies dans du sédiment réel (sable). Nous avons ainsi pu obtenir des reconstructions satisfaisantes (forme et dimensions) à partir de données réelles, pour un objet enfoui.

Soot and its characterization are of interest to researchers from various domains such as combustion diagnostics, numerical combustion, atmospheric optics, environmental and health applications. In this study, the main interest is on the radiative properties of soot aggregates issued directly from combustion flames in order to determine the effect of the presence of soot on the radiative heat transfer in the simulation of high temperature industrial applications involving gas combustion. Current studies modeling the radiative heat transfer through sooty gaseous media consider only the absorption as the main phenomenon of material-radiation interaction. Generalized correlations are used to determine the radiative properties of soot: these radiative properties are either computed over numerically generated aggregate morphologies or simply as a function of the soot average size, the fractal dimension and the volume fraction. However, the material-radiation interaction is susceptible to be more complex and morphology dependent at the aggregate level because of multiple scattering when the size of the object reaches the order of magnitude of the incident radiation wavelengths.In our work, we investigate the possibility to establish a computational methodology and workflow, starting from the definition of a realistic soot morphology up to the computation of the radiative heat transfer. To that end, observations of soot issued from propane/air, methane/air and methane/oxygen flames are performed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). SEM tomography is applied for the first time on soot issued from a propane/air flame, combined with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) observations. 2D and 3D fractal analysis techniques are used to investigate the fractal properties of virtual (numerically generated) soot clusters and also of the tomography reconstructed objects. The radiative properties of soot are then computed using our in-house developed DDA (Discrete Dipole Approximation) code. Special attention is paid to the DDA modeling of soot because of the high complex extinction index of the material, and to the directional integration numerical methods because direction-averaged radiative properties are required for the subsequent radiative heat transfer simulations. The morphology and the radiative properties of the realistic morphology are compared to the ones of representative soot aggregates numerically generated by a DLCCA (Diffusion Limited Cluster-Cluster Aggregation) algorithm. The similarities and discrepancies on the radiative properties are investigated, and the differences between representative virtual aggregates on the one hand and the tomography reconstructed object on the other hand in terms of radiative properties are highlighted. Finally the effect of the presence and of the morphology of soot on the radiative heat transfer within a sooty gaseous mixture in a 1D isothermal parallel plate configuration is investigated by the resolution of the radiative transfer equation using DOM (Discrete Ordinates Method).; Les suies et leur caractérisation constituent des sujets de recherche très actuels dans divers domaines tels que le diagnostic de la combustion, la combustion numérique, l’optique atmosphérique, l'environnement et les applications de santé. Notre étude se concentre sur les propriétés radiatives des agrégats de suie issus de flammes de combustion ; notre objectif est de déterminer l’effet de la présence de suies sur le transfert de chaleur par rayonnement pour la simulation d'applications industrielles à haute température impliquant la combustion de gaz. Les études actuelles de modélisation du transfert de chaleur par rayonnement à travers les mélanges gazeux chargés de suies ne considèrent que l'absorption comme phénomène d'interaction rayonnement-matière. Des corrélations généralisées sont utilisées pour déterminer les propriétés radiatives des suies, soit sur la base de morphologies générées numériquement, soit plus simplement à partir de la taille moyenne des suies, de leur dimension fractale et de leur fraction volumique. Cependant, lorsque la taille de l'objet atteint l'ordre de grandeur des longueurs d'onde du rayonnement incident, l'interaction matière-rayonnement est susceptible d’être plus complexe du fait du phénomène de diffusion au niveau de l’agrégation qui ne peut plus être ignoré.Dans notre travail, nous établissons une méthodologie complète assortie d’une chaîne de calcul allant de la définition d'une morphologie de suie réaliste jusqu'au calcul du transfert de chaleur par rayonnement. À cette fin, des observations de suies émises par des flammes propane / air, méthane / air et méthane / oxygène sont effectuées par Microscopie Electronique à Balayage (MEB). La tomographie MEB est appliquée pour la première fois sur une suie issue d’une flamme propane / air, en combinaison avec la Microscopie Electronique en Transmission (MET) pour les observations. Des techniques d'analyse fractale 2D et 3D sont utilisées pour étudier les propriétés fractales d’agrégats de suie virtuels (générés numériquement) et de l'objet obtenu par la tomographie. Les propriétés radiatives des suies sont ensuite calculées en utilisant notre propre code d’Approximation Dipolaire Discrète (ADD – Discrete Dipole Approximation, ou DDA, en anglais). Une attention particulière est accordée à la modélisation ADD des suies en raison de l’indice optique complexe élevé de leur matériau constitutif, et aux méthodes numériques d’intégration directionnelle car les moyennes directionnelles des propriétés radiatives sont nécessaires pour les simulations ultérieures de transfert radiatif. La morphologie et les propriétés radiatives de l’agrégat de suie réaliste (tomographié) sont comparées à celles d'agrégats de suie numériques représentatifs, générés par un algorithme d’agrégation amas-amas limitée par la diffusion (Diffusion Limited Cluster-Cluster Aggregation, ou DLCCA, en anglais). Les compatibilités et les écarts entre les propriétés radiatives sont examinés, et les différences entre agrégats numériques représentatifs d’une part et agrégat réaliste d’autre part en termes de propriétés radiatives sont soulignées. Enfin, l'effet de la présence et de la morphologie des suies sur le transfert de chaleur par rayonnement est étudié par la résolution de l'équation du transfert radiatif en utilisant la méthode des ordonnées discrètes (Discrete Ordinates Method, ou DOM, en anglais) dans un mélange gazeux chargé de suies et dans une configuration académique 1D de plaques parallèles isothermes.

4 p.; National audience; Cette étude s'inscrit dans le cadre du programme de Recherche et Développement initié par le Plan Cavité et a pour objectif le développement et l'amélioration de méthodes géophysiques non destructives pour la détection, la caractérisation et la surveillance des cavités souterraines et des désordres associés. La méthode géophysique concernée par cette étude est la tomographie sismique 3D en ondes de surface. Pour mieux comprendre les réponses sismiques provenant de cavités différentes, un code de modélisation élastique 3D en différences finies est utilisé. La méthode de différences finies a été choisie pour sa capacité de prendre en compte des modèles 3D hétérogènes pour pouvoir introduire des configurations géologiques complexes notamment la présence d'une cavité et simuler correctement la propagation des ondes de surface. Les sismogrammes synthétiques ainsi générées ont été utilisées pour tester l'efficacité du code d'inversion tomographique 3D des ondes de surface. Les résultats de l'inversion des temps d'arrivées montrent que les anomalies de perturbations de vitesse sont relativement cohérentes avec la profondeur et la forme réelles des cavités des modèles synthétiques. Si ces méthodologies fonctionnent dans un cadre théorique idéalisé, tel un milieu homogène en l'absence de bruit de mesure, l'ajout de bruit haute fréquence dans les données dégrade fortement les inversions, rendant leurs résultats incertains. Dans ce cas le couplage avec d'autres méthodes géophysiques, serait particulièrement intéressant.
