Abstract: In this paper, a new algorithm for the computation of workspace boundaries of continuum parallel robots (CPRs) is proposed. State-of-the-art techniques are mainly based on time-consuming joint-space discretization approaches or task-space discretization algorithms, and only a few approaches are dedicated to the computation of workspace boundaries. The proposed approach for the computation of the workspace boundaries is based on i) a free-space exploration strategy and ii) a boundary reconstruction algorithm. The former is exploited to identify an initial workspace boundary location (exterior, interior boundaries, and holes), while the latter is used to reconstruct the complete boundary surface. Moreover, the algorithm is designed to be employed with CPRs modelling strategies based on general discretization assumptions, in order to increase its applicability for various scopes. Our method is compared with two state-of-the-art algorithms in four case studies to validate the results and to establish its merits and limitations.

Abstract: International audience; Oxides derived from the ReO3 structure, such as bronzes or Wadsley-Roth phases, have re-emerged from the past as they offer very attractive properties as negative electrodes for high-power Li-ion batteries. Here, we revisit the hexagonal bronze Cs0.5Nb2.5W2.5O14 and its protonated H0.25Cs0.25Nb2.5W2.5O14 derivative, which was newly obtained after ion exchange. A panel of characterization techniques (HAADF-STEM imaging, EDX mapping, and XRD) revealed a specific cation ordering in the material and a preferential ion exchange in the heptagonal tunnels of this oxide. When used as Li-ion battery electrodes, H0.25Cs0.25Nb2.5W2.5O14 exhibits higher specific capacities as well as better capacity retention at high currents than Cs0.5Nb2.5W2.5O14. The protonated phase provides specific capacities of 132 and 111 mAh center dot g-1 at, respectively, 0.02 and 0.2 A center dot g-1. Kinetic analysis reveals that the good capacity at a high rate is due to favorable diffusion of lithium ions into the tunnels of H0.25Cs0.25Nb2.5W2.5O14. In addition, using in situ XRD, a solid solution mechanism occurring during lithium insertion was proposed, as well as the different lithiation sites of the material.

Abstract: International audience; The paper proposes a new real-time motion planning technique for an autonomous mobile robot that is able to find a collision-free path and a corresponding time-optimal trajectory while taking into account limits on the actuator capacities and constraints from the wheel-ground adhesion. The proposed technique includes two sub-modules. The first one, an optimal path planner, is based on the discretization of the robot workspace and dynamic programming principle. It allows finding the shortest path in the robot environment to avoid obstacles and reach the robot target. The second one, an optimal trajectory generator, operates with the discretized robot state-space and also employs dynamic programming techniques. It produces a time-optimal motion along the obtained path, which may include numerous regular and singular trajectory sections caused by the simultaneous application of actuator and wheel-ground adhesion constraints. To adapt this technique to real-time implementation, a moving window strategy is presented that allows regularly updating the robot motion profile in a dynamic environment. The advantages of the developed technique and its suitability for real-time control are illustrated by experimental studies implemented on a car-like mobile robot.

Abstract: International audience; Last-mile collection and delivery services often rely on multi-echelon logistic systems with many types of practical spatial, temporal, and resource constraints. We consider three extensions of the basic 2-echelon vehicle routing problem that are of practical interest: First, second-echelon vehicles need to simultaneously deliver and collect goods at customers within their specified time window. Second, first-echelon vehicles are allowed to perform multiple trips during the planning horizon. Third, the intermediate facilities, called satellites, allow temporary storage of goods, but the quantity that can be stored at a time is limited. This paper integrates these complicating features in a single mathematical model. To solve the problem, we design a decomposition-based matheuristic. It employs a reduced and refined mixed-integer programming formulation and two echelon-specific large neighborhood searches (LNS) to produce improving routes for the respective echelon. The most important algorithmic component is the feasibility check of LNS that relies on a sequence of constant-time and low-complexity tests. The final test allows rescheduling of the operations taking place at a satellite. It adapts the double-justification algorithm known from the scheduling literature. Extensive computational experiments systematically evaluate the new components of the matheuristic and benchmark it against a recent exact method for a related problem. Moreover, the impact of the main problem features such as the number of satellites and their capacity as well as the integration of forward and reverse flows is analyzed.

Abstract: International audience; To face market volatility, reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) aim to efficiently and cost-effectively react to changes. We focus on one characteristic of RMS: the scalability (ability to adapt the volume of throughput). In the literature, the only few indicators for scalability are not always formally defined and usually only consider a partial view of scalability. Moreover, most of them are actually more suited for the configuration planning rather than for the design. However, the design of the RMS has a high impact on its scalability. We propose the first combinatorial definition of this problem and a new measure to fully assess the scalability of a system at the design phase. This measure, based on a multi-objective approach, can assess the scalability of single-product manufacturing systems, analysing all configurations that it can implement. We present numerical experiments to compare this indicator with a state-of-the-art scalability indicator and with some classical production line design indicators, and we show that future research should focus on scalability as a specific criterion to optimise during the design of an RMS. In addition, the results obtained allow us to infer some managerial insights on the best levers to use when performing a reconfiguration for scalability purpose.

Abstract: International audience; In dependent type theory, impredicativity is a powerful logical principle that allows the definition of propositions that quantify over arbitrarily large types, potentially resulting in self-referential propositions. Impredicativity can provide a system with increased logical strength and flexibility, but in counterpart it comes with multiple incompatibility results. In particular, Abel and Coquand showed that adding definitional uniqueness of identity proofs (UIP) to the main proof assistants that support impredicative propositions (Coq and Lean) breaks the normalization procedure, and thus the type-checking algorithm. However, it was not known whether this stems from a fundamental incompatibility between UIP and impredicativity or if a more suitable algorithm could decide type-checking for a type theory that supports both. In this paper, we design a theory that handles both UIP and impredicativity by extending the recently introduced observational type theory TTobs with an impredicative universe of definitionally proof-irrelevant types, as initially proposed in the seminal work on observational equality of Altenkirch et al. We prove decidability of conversion for the resulting system, that we call CCobs , by harnessing proof-irrelevance to avoid computing with impredicative proof terms. Additionally, we prove normalization for CCobs in plain Martin-Löf type theory, thereby showing that adding proof-irrelevant impredicativity does not increase the computational content of the theory.

It is often used in large-scale distributed systems where models ensuring a stronger safety incur performance that are too low to be deemed practical. Eventual consistency tends to be uniformly applied within a system, but we argue a demand exists for differentiated eventual consistency, e.g. in blockchain systems.We propose UPS to address this demand. UPS is a novel consistency mechanism that works in pair with our novel two-phase epidemic broadcast protocol GPS to offer differentiated eventual consistency and delivery speed. We propose two complementary analyses of the broadcast protocol: a continuous analysis and a discrete analysis based on compartmental models used in epidemiology. Additionally, we propose the formal definition of a scalable consistency metric to measure the consistency trade-off at runtime. We evaluate UPS in two simulated worldwide settings: a one-million-node network and a network emulating that of the Ethereum blockchain. In both settings, UPS reduces inconsistencies experienced by a majority of the nodes and reduces the average message latency for the remaining nodes.

Abstract: International audience; Fog Computing is a new paradigm aiming at decentralizing the Cloud by geographically distributing away computation, storage and network resources as well as related services. In order to design, develop, deploy, maintain and evolve Fog systems, languages are required for properly modeling both their entities (e.g., infrastructures, topologies, resources configurations) and their specific features such as the locality concept, QoS constraints applied on resources (e.g., energy, data privacy, latency) and their dependencies, the dynamicity of considered workloads, the heterogeneity of both applications and devices, etc. This paper provides a detailed overview of the current state-of-the-art in terms of Fog modeling languages. We relied on our long-term experience in Cloud Computing and Cloud Modeling to contribute a feature model describing what we believe to be the most important characteristics of Fog modeling languages. We also performed a systematic scientific literature search and selection process to obtain a list of already existing Fog modeling languages. Then, we evaluated and compared these Fog modeling languages according to the characteristics expressed in our feature model. As a result, we discuss in this paper the main capabilities of these Fog modeling languages and propose a corresponding set of open research challenges in this area. We expect the presented work to be helpful to both current and future researchers or engineers working on/with Fog systems, as well as to anybody genuinely interested in Fog Computing or more generally in distributed systems.

Abstract: International audience; Cosserat rod theory proved efficient modeling performances in robotics, especially in the context of continuum robots, in the past decade. The implementation of such theory is far from being unique and straightforward. We consider the illustrative example of multi-segment, general routing tendon actuated continuum robots in their nominal static operating regime. This paper details two main approaches based on Cosserat rod modeling, namely the Newtonian and Lagrangian approaches. We provide a walk-through guide regarding theoretical derivations and numerical implementation of both approaches, together with a proof of equivalence. This comparative study is supplemented with novel contributions and extensions of each approach and in-depth discussion of their performances and applicability, as well as highlighting their special features.

Abstract: In this paper, we study a paratransit application in which children are transported every day from their homes to their special schools or medical-social establishments. To optimize this transportation system, the establishments collaborate to propose a joint transportation plan. We propose a new algorithm to jointly build vehicle routes that visit several establishments and simultaneously set the establishments’ opening hours. This algorithm combines a large neighborhood search, the resolution of a route-based model, and the progressive shrinkage of the planning window. It is applied to a real case from the area of Lyon in France, including 34 schools and 575 heterogeneous users served by a heterogeneous fleet of reconfigurable vehicles. On average, we show that in addition to the 10% of saving that can be expected by sharing vehicle routes between schools, 7% of additional savings can be achieved by school bell adjustment. This cost saving also decreases average user ride times and the number of vehicles required, creating longer routes that are more attractive for driver services. Abstract: International audience; The puzzling case of the mixing between the charge transfer (CT) and local excited (LE) characters upon twisting of the geometry of N-phenylpyrrole (N-PP) is investigated considering the six low-lying singlet excited states (ES). The theoretical calculations of the potential energy surfaces (PES) have been performed for these states using a Coupled Cluster method accounting for the impact of the contributions from the triples, many-body Green's function GW and Bethe–Salpeter equation (BSE) formalisms, as well as Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) using various exchange–correlation functionals. Our findings confirm that the BSE formalism is more reliable than TD-DFT for close-lying ES with mixed CT/LE nature. More specifically, BSE/GW yields a more accurate evolution of the excited state PES than TD-DFT when compared to the reference coupled cluster values. BSE/GW PES curves also show negligible exchange–correlation functional starting point dependency in sharp contrast with their TD-DFT counterparts.

Abstract: International audience; Protactinium (Z = 91) is a very rare actinide with peculiar physico-chemical properties. Indeed, although one may naively think that it behaves similarly to either thorium or uranium by its position in the periodic table, it may in fact follow its own rules. Because of the quite small energy gap between its valence shells (in particular the 5f and 6d ones) and also the strong influence of relativistic effects on its properties, it is actually a challenging element for theoretical chemists. In this article, we combine experimental information, chemical arguments and standard first-principle calculations, complemented by implicit and explicit solvation, to revisit the stepwise complexation of aqueous protactinium(V) with sulfate and oxalate dianionic ligands (SO42- and C2O42-, respectively). From a methodological viewpoint, we notably conclude that it is necessary to at least saturate the coordination sphere of protactinium(V) to reach converged equilibrium constant values. Furthermore, in the case of single complexations (i.e. with one sulfate or oxalate ligand bound in the bidentate fashion), we show that it is necessary to maintain the coordination of one hydroxyl group, thought of in the [PaO(OH)]^3+ precursor, to obtain coherent complexation constants. Therefore, we predict that this hydroxyl group is maintained in the formation of 1:1 complexes while we confirm that it is withdrawn when coordinating three sulfate or oxalate ligands. Finally, we stress that this work is a first step toward the future use of theoretical predictions to elucidate the enigmatic chemistry of protactinium in solution.

Formulated as the minimization of a discrete Mumford-Shah functional and estimated via a theoretically grounded alternating minimization scheme, the bottleneck of such a variational approach lies in the need to fine-tune their hyperparameters, while not having access to ground truth data.To that aim, a Stein-like strategy providing optimal hyperparameters is designed, based on the minimization of an unbiased estimate of the quadratic risk.Efficient and automated minimization of the estimate of the risk crucially relies on an unbiased estimate of the gradient of the risk with respect to hyperparameters. Its practical implementation is performed using a forward differentiation of the alternating scheme minimizing the Mumford-Shah functional, requiring exact differentiation of the proximity operators involved. Intensive numerical experiments are performed on synthetic images with different geometry and noise levels, assessing the accuracy and the robustness of the proposed procedure.The resulting parameter-free piecewise-smooth estimation and contour detection procedure, not requiring prior image processing expertise nor annotated data, can then be applied to real-world images.

Abstract: International audience; The concept of a circular economy has arisen in response to the problems related to the limits of the dominant linear economic system in contemporary societies and of the finite resources of our planet. The transition from waste status to a raw material by reusing it makes it possible to modify its value for future users and thus to redistribute this value. This article focuses on the case of spent grain to illustrate the role of the circular economy in food transition. Bases on a series of interviews, the paper discusses business modeling to operationalize sustainable development in the food sector and presents a discussion and conclusion on the advantages and limitations of the deployment of the circular economy in the brewing industry, taking into account and understanding the interests and constraints of various stakeholders.

Abstract: We show two stability results for a closed Riemannian manifold whose Ricci curvature is small in the Kato sense and whose first Betti number is equal to the dimension. The first one is a geometric stability result stating that such a manifold is Gromov-Hausdorff close to a flat torus. The second one states that, under a stronger assumption, such a manifold is diffeomorphic to a torus: this extends a result by Colding and Cheeger-Colding obtained in the context of a lower bound on the Ricci curvature., 24 pages. Abstract: International audience; Supplier reliability is a critical issue for manufacturing companies. Delivery delays from suppliers create backlog and firefighting on the shop floors. To avoid disruption and hedge against supplier lead time uncertainty, companies rely on diversification, multi-sourcing, and safety lead times. In multi-sourcing, the buyer might order the same product (raw material) from different suppliers. The design of a robust and cost-efficient purchasing/ordering plan in multi-sourcing is a complex task which has a strong impact on the performance of the company. In this study, we investigate the use of robust optimization for the integrated lot-sizing and supplier selection problem under lead time uncertainty. More specifically, we use polyhedral budgeted uncertainty sets. The resulting model determines the ideal lot sizes to minimize the total costs taking into consideration suppliers’ reliability and prices. To solve this problem, a row and column generation approach is proposed. To alleviate scalability issues, we enhance the row and column generation through a robust counterpart formulation, and we propose an efficient fix-and-optimize approach. Our extensive computational experiments show that the fix-and-optimize approach yields good quality solutions within a reasonable amount of computational time. We provide insights into supplier diversification based on the risk profile of the decision-maker. One of the conclusions is that an extremely risk-averse decision-maker selects a single supplier, namely the most reliable one even if it does not offer the lowest price.

Abstract: International audience; Network Traffic Classification enables a number of practical applications ranging from network monitoring to resource management, with security implications as well. Nowadays, traffic classification has become a challenging task in order to distinguish among a variety of applications due to the huge amount of generated traffic. Therefore, developing Machine Learning (ML) models, which can successfully identify network applications, is one of the most important tasks. However, among the ML models applied to network traffic classification so far, no model outperforms all the others. To solve these issues, this paper proposes a novel Deep Learning (DL)-based approach that incorporates multiple Decision Tree based models. This approach employs a non-linear blending ensemble method by combining tree-based classifiers through DL in order to maximize generalization accuracy. This ensemble consists of two levels called base classifiers and meta-classifiers. In the first level, Decision Tree-based models are used as the base classifiers while in the second level, DL is used as a meta-model to combine the outputs of the base classifiers. Using two publicly available datasets, we show that our proposed ensemble is suitable for network traffic classification and outperforms the linear blending (using logistic regression as meta-model) as well as several well-known ML models, which are Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), AdaBoost, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), LightGBM, Catboost, and XGBoost.

Abstract: We present the quantitative method of the recent work arXiv:2209.09340 in a simple setting, together with a compactness argument that was not included in arXiv:2209.09340 and has interest per se. We are concerned with the exponential stabilization (spectral gap) for linear kinetic equations with degenerate thermalization, i.e. when the collision operator vanishes on parts of the spatial domain. The method in arXiv:2209.09340 covers both scattering and Fokker-Planck type operators, and deals with external potential and boundary conditions, but in these notes we present only its core argument and restrict ourselves to the kinetic Fokker-Planck in the periodic torus with unit velocities and a thermalization degeneracy. Abstract: Epithelia act as a barrier against environmental stress and abrasion and in vivo they are continuously exposed to environments of various mechanical properties. The impact of this environment on epithelial integrity remains elusive. By culturing epithelial cells on 2D hydrogels, we observe a loss of epithelial monolayer integrity through spontaneous hole formation when grown on soft substrates. Substrate stiffness triggers an unanticipated mechanical switch of epithelial monolayers from tensile on soft to compressive on stiff substrates. Through active nematic modelling, we find unique patterns of cell shape texture called nematic topological defects that underpin large isotropic stress fluctuations at certain locations thereby triggering mechanical failure of the monolayer and hole opening. Our results show that substrate stiffness provides feedback on monolayer mechanical state and that topological defects can trigger stochastic mechanical failure, with potential application towards a mechanistic understanding of compromised epithelial integrity in bacterial infection, tumor progression and morphogenesis.

Abstract: International audience; Walking stability is one of the key issues for humanoid robots. A self-stabilised walking gait for a full dynamic model of humanoid robots is proposed. For simplified models, that is, the linear inverted pendulum model and variable-length inverted pendulum model, self-stabilisation of walking gait can be obtained if virtual constraints are properly defined. This result is extended to the full dynamic model of humanoid robots by using an essential dynamic model, which is developed based on the zero dynamics concept. With the proposed method, a robust stable walking for a humanoid robot is achieved by adjusting the step timing and landing position of the swing foot automatically, following its intrinsic dynamic characteristics. This exempts the robot from the time-consuming high-level control approaches, especially when a full dynamic model is applied. How different walking patterns/features (i.e., the swing foot motion, the vertical centre of mass motion, the switching manifold configuration, etc.) affect the stability of the walking gait is analysed. Simulations are conducted on robots Romeo and TALOS to support the results.

Abstract: This work investigates lot sizing with component substitution under demand uncertainty. The integration of component substitution with lot sizing in an uncertain demand context is important because the consolidation of the demand for components naturally allows risk-pooling and reduces operating costs. The considered problem is relevant not only in a production context, but also in the context of distribution planning. We propose a stochastic programming formulation for the static–dynamic type of uncertainty, in which the setup decisions are frozen but the production and consumption quantities are decided dynamically. To tackle the scalability issues commonly encountered in multistage stochastic optimization, this paper investigates the use of stochastic dual dynamic programming (SDDP). In addition, we consider various improvements of SDDP, including the use of strong cuts, the fast generation of cuts by solving the linear relaxation of the problem, and retaining the average demand scenarios. Finally, we propose two heuristics, namely, a hybrid of progressive hedging with SDDP and a heuristic version of SDDP. Computational experiments conducted on well-known instances from the literature show that the heuristic version of SDDP outperforms other methods. The proposed method can plan with up to 10 decision stages and 20 scenarios per stage, which results in 2010 scenario paths in total. Moreover, as the heuristic version of SDDP can replan to account for new information in less than a second, it is convenient in a dynamic context. Summary of Contribution: We believe our paper is suitable for the mission and scope of IJOC because we design efficient algorithms to solve an operations research problem. More precisely, we investigate the use of stochastic dual dynamic programming (SDDP) for lot sizing with component substitution under demand uncertainty. In this work, we consider the static–dynamic decision framework, and a good approximation of the expected costs in this context requires us to solve the problem with a large number of scenarios of future demand. As solving the considered problem is computationally intensive, we investigate the use of SDDP, which decomposes the problem per decision stage. We study several enhancements of SDDP, such as the use of strong cuts, the incorporation of a lower bound computed with the average demand scenario, the multicut version of SDDP, and scenario sampling with randomized quasi–Monte Carlo. Despite these improvements, the convergence of SDDP remains slow. Consequently, we propose a heuristic version of SDDP and a hybrid of progressive hedging and SDDP. We present the results of an extensive computational study performed on well-known instances from the literature. The results show that the heuristic SDDP outperforms the hybrid of progressive hedging with SDDP and state-of-the-art methods from the literature. Besides, our analysis shows that component substitution can pool the risk, and it allows maintaining the same service level with less inventory. The presented methodology can be used by practitioners to size their production lots, and subsequent researchers can build upon our results to consider uncertainty in other parameters, such as lead times, yields, and production capacities. Abstract: International audience; Paved shoulders have long been used to create "forgiving" roads where drivers can maintain control of their vehicles even when as they drift out of the lane. While the safety benefits of shoulders have been well documented, their effects on driver behavior around curves have scarcely been examined. The purpose of this paper is to fill this gap by assessing whether the addition of shoulders affects driver behavior differently as a function of bend direction. Driver behavior in a driving simulator was analyzed on left and right curves of two-lane rural roads in the presence and absence of 0.75-m and 1.25-m shoulders. The results demonstrated significant changes in drivers' lateral control when shoulders were provided. In the absence of oncoming traffic, the shoulders caused participants to deviate more toward the inner lane edge at curve entry, at the apex and at the innermost position on right bends but not left ones. In the presence of oncoming traffic, this also occurred at the apex and the innermost position, leading participants to spend more time off the lane on right curves. Participants did not slow down in either traffic condition to compensate for steering farther inside, thereby increasing the risk of lane departure on right curves equipped with shoulders. These findings highlight the direction-specific influence of shoulders on a driver's steering control when driving around bends. They provide arguments supporting the idea that drivers view paved shoulders as a new field of safe travel on right curves. Recommendations are made to encourage drivers to keep their vehicle within the lane on right bends and to prevent potential interference with cyclists when a shoulder is present.

Abstract: The control of industrial robot manipulators presents a difficult problem for control engineers due to the complexity of their nonlinear dynamics models. Nonlinear controls based on feedback linearization are developed to meet control requirements. Model-based nonlinear control is highly sensitive to parameter errors and leads to problems of robustness for tracking trajectories at high speeds, and there is the additional problem of a heavy computational burden to consider in the design of nonlinear controllers. In this paper, a mechatronic design approach is proposed, which aims to facilitate controller design by redesigning the mechanical structure. The problem is approached in two steps: first, the dynamic decoupling conditions of manipulators are described and discussed, involving redistribution of the moving mass, which leads to the decoupling of motion equations. A classical linear control law is then used to track the desired efficient bang-bang profile trajectory. Then, in the presence of parameter uncertainty and external disturbances, the nonlinear controls with simple structures are adopted to stabilize the decoupled system asymptotically. An analysis of the results from a simulation of this approach demonstrates its effectiveness in controller design. The proposed improvement in control performance is illustrated via two spatial manipulators.

Abstract: International audience; The Internet of Things (IoT) aims for connecting Anything, Anywhere, Anytime (AAA). This assumption brings about several software engineering challenges that constitute a serious obstacle to its wider adoption. The main feature of the Internet of Things (IoT) is genericity w.r.t the variability of software and hardware technologies. Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) is a paradigm that advocates using models to address software engineering problems. It can help to meet the genericity of the IoT from a software engineering perspective. Existing MDE approaches for the IoT focus only on modeling the internal behavior of things but lack a comprehensive approach dedicated to network modeling. In the present paper, we introduce a network-oriented methodology based on MDE to unify the IoT's heterogeneous concepts. Fundamentally, we avoid the intrinsic heterogeneity of the IoT by separating the network's specification (i.e., the things, the communication scheme, and its constraints) from its concrete implementation (i.e., the low-level artifacts such as source code and documentation). Technically, the methodology relies on a model-based Domain-Specific Language (DSL) and a code generator. The former enables the modeling of the network's specification, and the latter provides a procedure to generate the low-level artifacts from this specification. Our results show that this methodology makes IoT's software engineering more rigorous, helps prevent bugs earlier, and saves time.

Abstract: International audience; The COVID-19 pandemic’s impacts have been devastating for the global economy, and particularly for manufacturing companies. Many firms were unprepared for a crisis of this magnitude and adapted their operations in an ad-hoc manner. Some of these adaptations were facilitated by digital technologies (DTs). This article examines extant literature using a systematic review methodology in order to extend our understanding of what DTs have been used in manufacturing companies during the pandemic, how DTs have helped manufacturing companies cope with the pandemic, and how these innovations can be used in the post-pandemic world. The major outcome of our study is a novel classification of DT applications in the pandemic setting in the manufacturing industry. In addition, we propose an agenda for future research.

Abstract: In the wake of the growing environmental challenges, hydrogen produced from renewable energy is a good candidate as a substitute for conventional fuels. Indeed, fuel cells can produce electricity thanks to air and hydrogen, and only reject water. The use of this technology is currently emerging in various sectors, such as the maritime industry. However, sea salt aerosols, mostly composed of sodium chloride (NaCl), can damage fuel cells. So far, only a few studies have been dedicated to the impact of NaCl on Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) though showing that salty air can induce a significant loss of performance without clearly identifying the underlying physicochemical mechanisms [1][2][3]. Thus, the present experimental work investigates the effects of a salt spray injected into the airflow of single PEMFC cells and stacks at various time scales and contamination levels, with the final aim of identifying the appropriate PEMFC stack protection needed for maritime applications. A dedicated experimental setup generating salt spray in the cathode airflow of a single cell and 5-cells stack has been designed, realized and characterized. The NaCl concentration range used is from 10 mg/m3 to 5 g/m3, to reproduce different types of salty environments. Cells and stacks are operated in constant current density mode. The study is conducted under the conditions of accelerated stress tests. When polluted at high concentrations, single cells degradation becomes significant after only a few minutes of operation (Figure 1) and after a few hours for stacks. Even under low concentrated environments, the single cell voltage decreases faster than the baseline (ie reference voltage with pure water in air stream), leading to PEMFC lifetime shortening. It has been observed that cathode rinsing with nitrogen flow or operation under pure water results in partial cell performance recovery. Moreover, starts-up and shuts-down operated during tests can have a positive or negative influence on cell performance, depending on the break duration. Even when the tests revealed only weak decrease in power, Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEA) and bipolar plates (BP) post-mortem characterizations highlight degradations. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) studies coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) have contributed to the identification of components in MEA and BP. As expected, chlorine reaches not only the cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL) and catalyst layer (CL) but also the anode CL by crossing the membrane [4]. According to the literature, chloride adsorption on Pt surface or Pt dissolution reduces the active area [3] whereas sodium ion contaminates the membrane [1]. Moreover, corrosion products from metallic components have been found. Corrosion marks identified as stainless steel from BP are present in the stack effluents and MEAs. As for single cell, compounds from current collectors (gold, nickel and copper) are present in the GDL and CL. In the near future, for single cell tests, non-metallic current collectors will be used in order to discriminate the effects of the direct degradation of salt spray on MEA and indirect degradation coming from corrosion products of metallic cell components. Overall, the present study reports that NaCl effects on PEMFCs not only depend on the concentration of the NaCl mist but also on the MEA type, current collectors/BP material, and startup/shutdown procedure. In the full paper and oral presentation, tests conducted with less concentrated NaCl droplets will also be presented, with the aim of determining adegradation threshold for single cells. Abstract: International audience; The geological units on the floor of Jezero crater, Mars, are part of a wider regional stratigraphy of olivine-rich rocks, which extends well beyond the crater. We investigate the petrology of olivine and carbonate-bearing rocks of the Séítah formation in the floor of Jezero. Using multispectral images and x-ray fluorescence data, acquired by the Perseverance rover, we performed a petrographic analysis of the Bastide and Brac outcrops within this unit. We find that these outcrops are composed of igneous rock, moderately altered by aqueous fluid. The igneous rocks are mainly made of coarse-grained olivine, similar to some Martian meteorites. We interpret them as an olivine cumulate, formed by settling and enrichment of olivine through multi-stage cooling of a thick magma body.

Abstract: International audience; We report the substitution of lambda 5-phosphinines (2,6-dicarbonitrile diphenyl-1-λ 5-phosphinine) with amino-group. The impact of these modifications on both the optical and redox properties is investigated using a joint experimental/theoretical approach. In particular, we show that the choice of the donor diphenyl-amino group dramatically impacts the nature of the charge transfer. The use of di(methoxyphenyl)amine redshifts the optical properties and allows thermally activated delayed fluorescent in the solid-state. Finally, we demonstrated that lambda 5-phosphinines with amino-group can be used as active emitter in an electroluminescent device.

Abstract: International audience; This paper updates the development of a warm front-end electronics (WFEE) dedicated to cryogenic sensors readout. It belongs to the X-ray integral field unit instrument of ESA's future space observatory: ATHENA. This instrument integrates cryogenic elements such as 3168 transition edge sensors as detectors, multiplexed into 96 channels using time-division multiplexing (TDM). One TDM channel will be read out by two stages of superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), followed by a WFEE and finally, a digital readout system, both two last stages operating at about 300 K. In the WFEE, 96 TDM channels will be distributed in 48 application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC). Each channel includes one low-noise amplifier to amplify the multiplexed signal and 5 configurable current sources to bias the SQUIDs and TES in the cryogenic stages. Additionally, two channels within the same ASIC share a serial bus "RS485/(IC)-C-2" to configure the current sources (current SlowDACs) and housekeeping elements that monitor the temperature, current and voltage of the ASIC. The ASIC presented in this paper, "AwaXe_v3" (AwaXe: Athena Warm Asic for the X-ifu Electronics), is developed for the WFEE using an AMS 350 nm SiGe BiCMOS technology. It is the first prototype of the WFEE integrating two complete TDM channels. Representative measurement results that characterise the main components of the WFEE will be discussed in this paper as an update on the use of ASIC for the TES/SQUID readout.

Abstract: Frequent changes in customer needs and large product variety are forcing manufacturing companies to move from mass production to mass customization. Customized production can be achieved by introducing reconfigurable production systems (RMS). The customized flexibility and several characteristics of RMSs provide many opportunities in terms of process and production planning. However, those characteristics greatly increase the complexity of the design and planning of production systems. This paper presents a decision support system relying on a skill-based approach to design a reconfigurable assembly line considering the planning of assembly processes and monitoring. The proposed decision aid system is modular in design and is composed of four modules. The main input data is a CAD model of a new product variant for the identification of the assembly and monitoring requirements. Besides, a current assembly system layout with its resource descriptions exists. In the first developed module, assembly-by-disassembly and a skill-based approach are used to generate different assembly plans. In the second module, feature recognition and skill-based approaches generate process monitoring alternatives. The third module uses a linear program (LP) that aims to minimize the total cost of workstation activation and reconfiguration, as well as cycle time, and to maximize the process quality of the assembly tasks. A user-based generative model design approach is applied to optimize the values of three objective functions. In the fourth and final module, a simulation of the optimized assembly plan allows either the validation of the assembly plan and process monitoring plan or initiates a new iteration due to their infeasibility. To further demonstrate how the proposed methodology works, some computational experiments are provided for two use cases.

Abstract: International audience; This contribution aims to define an analysis procedure for abnormal deposits in human tissues starting from in vivo characterization, down to the nanoscale using major instrumentation. Such an integrated approach is based on recent literature, but particularly on our research over the last twenty years on pathological calcifications. To this end, we begin by describing four successive analytical steps, on the injury site or physician’s surgery, at the hospital, at a typical physicochemical laboratory, and finally at a large scale (possibly multinational) facility. For the first step, we present various techniques which can be implemented on portable instruments. For the second step, commercial analytical setups are used. In a physicochemical laboratory, prototype or commercial setups are used and finally on large scale instruments, characterization techniques with better spatial resolution and/or higher sensitivity or techniques specific to synchrotron radiation are employed.

Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with an optimization problem, which arises when a new simple assembly line has to be designed subject to a fixed number of available workstations, cycle time constraint, and precedence relations between necessary assembly tasks. The studied problem consists in assigning a given set of tasks to workstations so as to find the most robust line configuration, which can withstand processing time uncertainty as much as possible. The line robustness is measured by a new indicator, called stability factor. In this work, the studied problem is proven to be strongly NP-hard, upper bounds are proposed, and the relation of the stability factor with another robustness indicator, known as stability radius, is investigated. A mixed-integer linear program (MILP) is proposed for maximizing the stability factor in the general case, and an alternative formulation is also derived when uncertainty originates in workstations only. Computational results are reported on a collection of instances derived from classic benchmark data used in the literature for the Simple Assembly Line Balancing Problem (SALBP).

Abstract: Bots are becoming a popular method for automating basic everyday tasks in many software projects. This is true in particular because of the availability of many off-the-shelf task-specific bots that teams can quickly adopt (which are sometimes completed with additional task-specific custom bots). Based on our experience in the Coq project, where we have developed and maintained a multi-task project-specific bot, we argue that this alternative approach to project automation should receive more attention because it strikes a good balance between productivity and adaptibility. In this article, we describe the kind of automation that our bot implements, what advantages we have gained by maintaining a project-specific bot, and the technology and architecture choices that have made it possible. Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we propose a novel approach to classify the spectrogram zeros (SZs) of multicomponent signals based on the analysis of the Voronoï cells associated with these zeros. More precisely, the characterization of the distribution of the spectrogram maxima of a complex white Gaussian noise along the edges of the Voronoï cells associated with SZs enables us to derive an algorithm to classify the different types of zeros present in the spectrogram of a multicomponent signal. Numerical applications on simulated signals confirm the relevance of the proposed classification algorithm, and an illustration on a real signal concludes the paper.

Abstract: International audience; The Pourbaix diagram of an element displays its stable chemical forms with respect to the redox potential and pH of the solution, whose knowledge is fundamental for understanding and anticipating the chemistry of the element in a specified solution. Unlike most halogens, the Pourbaix diagram in the aqueous phase for astatine (At, Z = 85) is still under construction. In particular, the predominant domains of two astatine species assumed to exist under alkaline conditions, At$^-$ and AtO(OH)$_2$$^-$, need to be refined. Through high-performance ion-exchange chromatography, electromobility measurements, and competition experiments, the existence of At$^-$ and AtO(OH)$_2$$^-$ has been confirmed and the associated standard potential has been determined for the first time (0.86 ± 0.05 V vs the standard hydrogen electrode). On the basis of these results, a revised version of astatine’s Pourbaix diagram is proposed, covering the three oxidation states of astatine that exist in the thermodynamic stability range of water: At(-I), At(I), and At(III) (as $_2$$^-$, $_2$$^+$, AtO(+), AtO(OH), and AtO(OH)$_2$$^-$

Abstract: International audience; The boom in online sales has inspired the enthusiasm of manufacturers to include their own online sale channel with the retailer’s offline channel. This paper investigates the impact of consumer transfer in a capital-constraint dual-channel supply chain and examines the optimal operational decision by considering a Stackelberg game. We capture the trade credit coordination mechanism of the supply chain facing with stochastic demand. The results show that trade credit contract would alleviate financial pressure of the capital-constraint retailer and achieve coordination in the dual-channel supply chain. Besides, the adoption of trade credit stimulates the ordering behaviour of retailers. However, by using trade credit, the default risk increases for the capital-constraint retailer compared to the retailer with sufficient capital. The manufacturer shares the risk with the retailer by trade credit in dual-channel supply chain. Furthermore, the effects of consumer transfer rates on the setting of the trade credit parameters are also presented in this paper.

Abstract: International audience; This paper considers the problem of maximizing an expectation function over a finite set, or finite-arm bandit problem. We first propose a naive stochastic bandit algorithm for obtaining a probably approximately correct (PAC) solution to this discrete optimization problem in relative precision, that is a solution which solves the optimization problem up to a relative error smaller than a prescribed tolerance, with high probability. We also propose an adaptive stochastic bandit algorithm which provides a PAC-solution with the same guarantees. The adaptive algorithm outperforms the mean complexity of the naive algorithm in terms of number of generated samples and is particularly well suited for applications with high sampling cost.

Abstract: International audience; Clay minerals retain or adsorb metal ions in the Earth’s critical zone. Rocks, sediments and soils rich in clay minerals can concentrate rare earth elements (REEs) in ion adsorption-type deposits (IADs) and are similarly effective at metallic contaminant remediation. However, the molecular-scale chemical and physical mechanisms of metal ion retention remain only partly understood. In this Review, we describe the nature, location and energy requirements of metal retention at clay mineral surfaces. Retention originates mainly from electrostatic interactions during cation exchange at low pH and chemical bonding in surface complexation and precipitation at neutral and high pH. Surface complexation can induce surface redox reactions and precipitation mechanisms including neoformation of clay mineral layered structures. In IADs, outer-sphere adsorption is the major retention mechanism of REE ions. By contrast, the use of clay minerals in pollution control relies on various mechanisms that can coexist, including cation exchange, surface complexation and nucleation growth. To more effectively leverage clay mineral–metal interactions in resource recovery and contaminant remediation, complex mechanisms such as surface precipitation and redox reactions must be better understood; for instance, by utilizing advances in quantum mechanical calculations, close combination between synchrotron and simulation techniques, and upscaling of molecular-level information in macroscopic thermokinetic predictive models.

Abstract: International audience; The development of instruments combining multiple characterization and imaging tools drove huge advances in material science, engineering, biology, and other related fields. Notably, the coupling of SEM with microRaman spectrometry (mu Raman) provides the means for the correlation between structural and physicochemical properties at the surface, while dual focused ion beam (FIB)-scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) operating under cryogenic conditions (cryo-FIB-SEM) allow for the analysis of the ultrastructure of materials in situ and in their native environment. In cryo-FIB-SEM, rapid and efficient methods for assessing vitrification conditions in situ are required for the accurate investigation of the original structure of hydrated samples. This work reports for the first time the use of a cryo-FIB-SEM-mu Raman instrument to efficiently assess the accuracy of cryo-fixation methods. Analyses were performed on plunge-freezed highly hydrated calcium phosphate cement (CPC) and a gelatin composite. By making a trench of a defined thickness with FIB, mu Raman analyses were carried out at a specific depth within the frozen material. Results show that the mu Raman signal is sensitive to the changes in the molecular structures of the aqueous phase and can be used to examine the depth of vitreous ice in frozen samples. The method presented in this work provides a reliable way to avoid imaging artifacts in cryo-FIB-SEM that are related to cryo-fixation and therefore constitutes great interest in the study of vitreous materials exhibiting high water content, regardless of the sample preparation method (i.e., by HPF, plunge freezing, and so on).

Abstract: This paper is the second of the series of two papers, which focuses on the derivation of an averaged 1D model for compressible bubbly flows. For this, we start from a microscopic description of the interactions between a large but finite number of small bubbles with a surrounding compressible fluid. This microscopic model has been derived and analysed in the first paper. In the present one, provided physical parameters scale according to the number of bubbles, we prove that solutions to the microscopic model exist on a timespan independent of the number of bubbles. Considering then that we have a large number of bubbles, we propose a construction of the macroscopic variables and derive the averaged system satisfied by these quantities. Our method is based on a compactness approach in a strong-solution setting. In the last section, we propose the derivation of the Williams-Boltzmann equation corresponding to our setting.

Abstract: International audience; Metabolomics provides crucial information on the metabolism of living organisms, by detecting and quantifying metabolites in biofluids, biopsies or extracts. Metabolomics studies involve analysing large collections of very complex samples by NMR or mass spectrometry methods. The resulting 1D spectra are characterized by the ubiquitous overlap between metabolite signals, justifying the need for the acquisition of 2D spectra on such samples. However, the long acquisition time of conventional 2D NMR makes it incompatible with the high-throughput nature of metabolomics, which explains why the acquisition of 2D spectra is generally limited to a subset of samples. In this chapter, we will describe how fast 2D NMR methods can lead to experimental times that become compatible with the systematic incorporation of 2D NMR in metabolomics workflows. The most frequently used 2D NMR methods include non-uniform sampling and ultrafast 2D NMR, but fast-pulsing methods and Hadamard spectroscopy have also shown some potential. In this chapter, we highlight how fast 2D NMR can facilitate the identification of biomarkers in untargeted metabolomics studies. We also discuss the use of fast quantitative 2D NMR strategies to provide accurate quantification of metabolites in targeted metabolomics approaches. Finally, we describe the promising combination of fast 2D NMR methods with hyperpolarization.

Abstract: International audience; The Perseverance rover landed on the floor of Jezero crater in February 2021. The initial set of images taken from the landing site of the residual butte Kodiak showed a deltaic architecture consistent with a paleolake, but at a level ~100 m lower than expected, suggestive of a closed lake system. After spending ~1 year studying the crater floor, the rover reached the front of the deltaic fan in April 2022. Here, we report observations of the facies, structure and composition of these sedimentary deposits using the SuperCam instrument. SuperCam can take images for texture analysis with the Remote Micro-Imager (RMI), visible and infrared reflectance (VISIR) spectra as well as Raman spectra for mineralogical analysis, and data from laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for chemical analysis. The rover investigated the basal strata of the delta along two traverses at the SE of the delta front. The transition between the crater floor and the delta is not well determined due to regolith and strongly degraded outcrops, and is currently under assessment. The ~20 m thick basal layers that are well-visible on orbital data consist of fine-grained sandstones and siltstones deposited in sub-horizontal planar beds with millimeter thick laminations. These deposits display a substantial alteration highlighted by the detection of both sulfates and phyllosilicates, with exception of local boulders of igneous texture lacking alteration. Texture and composition are both consistent with a quiet regime of deposition such as in lake deposits or distal delta slopes. These beds are considered of topmost importance for sample return and were cored in two locations. Pebbly sandstones and conglomerates with pebbles limited to a few centimeters are observed immediately above these strata. The texture is matrix-supported suggesting an emplacement through gravity sliding or turbidity flows below water rather than fluvial deposition. The composition is more variable than in underlying finer-grained beds and includes local carbonate detections. Uppermost deposits have not been reached by the rover yet, but have been analyzed remotely by RMI images, and VISIR for some of them. They consist of cross-bedded sandstones and conglomerates in all locations of the delta front. The diversity in texture of these deposits suggests a variability in depositional regimes including high-energy floods, either during the lacustrine phase, or subsequently. Boulders present within these layers are rounded suggesting a substantial abrasion by fluvial transport. These boulders are also interesting targets for sampling distant crustal rocks. The top of the delta will be analyzed and sampled along the traverse of the rover in 2023.

Abstract: International audience; The steric strain around copper(I) in typical [Cu(NNR)2] + complexes, where NNR is a diimine ligand substituted in α of the nitrogen atoms by R, is known to strongly impact the excited-state properties. Generally speaking, the larger R, the longer the emission lifetime and higher quantum yield. However, the stability of the coordination scaffold can be at stake if the steric strain imposed by R is too large. In this work, we explore a way of fine-tuning the steric strain around Cu(I) to reach a balance between high emission quantum yield and stability in a highly bulky copper(I) complex. Taking stable [Cu(dipp)2] + and unstable [Cu(dtbp)2] + (where dipp and dtbp are respectively 2,9-diisopropyl-1,10-phenanthroline and 2,9-ditert-butyl-1,10phenanthroline) as boundary of two least and most sterically strained structures, we designed and characterized non-symmetrical ligand 2-isopropyl-9-tert-butyl-1,10-phenanthroline (L1) and corresponding complex [Cu(L1)2] + (Cu1). The key experimental findings are that Cu1 exhibits a rigid tetrahedral geometry in the ground state, close to that of [Cu(dtbp)2] + and with an intermediate stability between that of [Cu(dipp)2] + and [Cu(dtbp)2] +. Conversely, the non-symmetrical nature of ligand L1 leads to a shorter emission lifetime and smaller quantum yield than either [Cu(dipp)2] + or [Cu(dtbp)2] +. This peculiar behavior is rationalized through the in depth analysis of the ultrafast dynamics of the excited state measured with optical transient absorption spectroscopy and theoretical calculations performed on the ground and excited state of Cu1. Our main findings are that the obtained complex is significantly more stable than [Cu(dtbp)2] + despite the sterically strained coordination sphere. The non-symmetrical nature of the ligand translates into a strongly distorted structure in the excited state. The distortion can be described as a rocking motion of one ligand, entailing the premature extinction of the excited state via several deactivation channels.; La contrainte stérique autour du cuivre (I) dans les complexes typiques [Cu(NNR)2] +, où NNR est un ligand diimine substitué en α des atomes d'azote par R, est connue pour avoir un fort impact sur les propriétés des états excités. En prenant [Cu(dipp)2] + stable et [Cu(dtbp)2] + instable (où dipp et dtbp sont respectivement 2,9-diisopropyl-1,10-phenanthroline et 2,9-ditert-butyl-1, 10-phénanthroline) comme limite des deux structures les moins et les plus stériquement tendues, nous avons conçu et caractérisé le ligand non symétrique 2-isopropyl-9-tert-butyl-1,10-phénanthroline (L1) et le complexe correspondant [Cu(L1)2] + (Cu1). Les principaux résultats expérimentaux sont que Cu1 présente une géométrie tétraédrique rigide dans l'état fondamental, proche de celle de [Cu(dtbp)2] + et avec une stabilité intermédiaire entre celle de [Cu(dipp)2] + et [Cu(dtbp)2] +. Inversement, la nature non symétrique du ligand L1 entraîne une durée de vie d'émission plus courte et un rendement quantique plus faible que ceux de [Cu(dipp)2] + ou [Cu(dtbp)2] +. Ce comportement particulier est rationalisé par l'analyse approfondie de la dynamique ultrarapide de l'état excité, mesurée par spectroscopie d'absorption optique transitoire, et par des calculs théoriques effectués sur l'état fondamental et excité de Cu1. Nos principales conclusions sont que le complexe obtenu est significativement plus stable que [Cu(dtbp)2] + malgré la sphère de coordination stériquement tendue. La nature non symétrique du ligand se traduit par une structure fortement déformée dans l'état excité. La distorsion peut être décrite comme un mouvement de bascule d'un ligand, entraînant l'extinction prématurée de l'état excité via plusieurs canaux de désactivation.

Abstract: The present article discusses the investigation of CuIn Ga S (CIGS) thin films for photovoltaic applications. For decades, a Cu-rich composition has been used to create solar cells with efficiencies of up to 13.5%; however, interest in chalcopyrite sulfide has recently been revived due to its high and adjustable bandgap, making it a serious candidate as a top cell in tandem configurations. Although chalcopyrite selenides share many properties with CIGS thin films, crucial differences have been reported. To further understand these materials, we studied more than 500 samples of absorbers and resulting solar cells. First, we found that the compositional window for obtaining single-phase CIGS thin films with a 3-stage co-evaporation process is very narrow. Second, we reported that a combination of low copper content and sodium addition during growth is required to maximize the Photoluminescence intensity ( i.e. to minimize the absorber-related open-circuit voltage losses). Finally, we showed that solar cell performance and stability depend not only on absorber quality but also on phenomena at interfaces (absorber/buffer and grain boundaries). Altogether, we formulate growth recommendations for the manufacture of stable CIGS/CdS solar cells with state-of-the-art efficiency.

Abstract: International audience; Narrow-band imaging (NBI) bronchoscopy offers enhanced visualization of microvascular structures in the lung’s epithelium (airway walls). Recent studies suggest that such vessels are helpful in predicting the invasiveness of bronchial lesions. In particular, Shibuya characterized pathological features of lesions and studied their relationship with specific histological stages of lung cancer. We propose a method for identifying these vascular patterns using a small expert-labeled dataset. Our approach is based on a few-shot learning method using a Siamese network to learn and distinguish pathological features of the bronchial vasculature. We achieved better intra-class clustering and inter-class separation in the embedding space compared to a baseline CNN classifier. Further, a 25% increase in the overall accuracy was obtained during testing.
