“HOW IS IT DELIGHTFUL WHEN IT IS NOT?”: ON THE TRANSLATIONS OF THE 55TH SURA OF THE KORAN AR-RAḤMĀN – THE MERCIFUL The Koran is not only the holy book of Islam, but also one of the most important literary works of classical Arabic literature. Muslims and people who know Arabic emphasize the extraordinary beauty of this text, written in rhymed and rhythmic prose. 55 sura of the Koran, Ar-Raḥmān (The Merciful) is widely regarded, both in Muslim and Orientalist circles, as one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, sura of the Koran from the artistic point of view. This is mainly due to the presence of a kind of “refrain” in this sura, which, of course, also has a semantic role in the context of the content of this fragment of the holy book of Muslims. The subject of the article is, first of all, a comparative analysis of the translation of this sura, and first of all of the refrain, in selected translations of the Koran into Polish, German, French and Russian. The analysis focuses not on the way of presenting the content, but on whether the authors of the translations tried to reflect the undoubted beauty of the sound of the Koranic text, which is supposed to delight not only with its content, but also its form, and translators usually have huge problems with this. The conclusions resulting from this analysis have a broader meaning, because analogous problems also arise in the case of ancient Arabic poetry and some other literary genres, primarily maqāma.

The article is devoted to Aḥmad al-Kardūdī, a Moroccan official in the second half of the nineteenth century, and his state and diplomatic activities, with particular emphasis on the account he wrote for Sultan Al-Ḥasan I (ruled 1873–1894) from the 1885 expedition to Spain, which had been published for the first time in 1963 under the title At-Tuḥfa as-saniyya li-al-Ḥaḍra al- Ḥasaniyya bi-al-Mamlaka al-Iṣbanyūliyya [Shining Gift for His Majesty Al- Ḥasan about the Kingdom of Spain]. This report often is included into Arab travel literature. It is not only a report on the tasks that the ruler set before the diplomatic mission of which Al-Kardūdī was a member, but also an image of the social and political consciousness of Moroccan elites associated with power of the West in times of active attempt at reforms undertaken by the ruler. Unfortunately, these attempts had little effect. The delegation was received in audience by Regent Maria Krystyna, also visited the capital of Spain and the most important Andalusian cities, but the author himself, probably on the orders of the Sultan, was also very interested in the military achievements of the Spaniards. The Gift, written in rhyming and rhythmic prose, can be treated as a literary work (although the author probably did not intend to), and simultaneously an example of an original, official, court document in the shape of a diplomatic report addressed to the ruler.

The simulation of open many-body quantum systems is challenging, requiring methods to both handle exponentially large Hilbert spaces and represent the influence of (infinite) particle and energy reservoirs. These two requirements are at odds with each other: Larger collections of modes can increase the fidelity of the reservoir representation but come at a substantial computational cost when included in numerical many-body techniques. An increasingly utilized and natural approach to control the growth of the reservoir is to cast a finite set of reservoir modes themselves as an open quantum system. There are, though, many routes to do so. Here, we introduce an accumulative reservoir construction -- an ARC -- that employs a series of partial refreshes of the extended reservoirs. Through this series, the representation accumulates the character of an infinite reservoir. This provides a unified framework for both continuous (Lindblad) relaxation and a recently introduced periodically refresh approach (i.e., discrete resets of the reservoir modes to equilibrium). In the context of quantum transport, we show that the phase space for physical behavior separates into discrete and continuous relaxation regimes with the boundary between them set by natural, physical timescales. Both of these regimes "turnover" into regions of over- and under-damped coherence in a way reminiscent of Kramers' crossover. We examine how the range of behavior impacts errors and the computational cost, including within tensor networks. These results provide the first comparison of distinct extended reservoir approaches, showing that they have different scaling of error versus cost (with a bridging ARC regime decaying fastest). Extended reservoirs provide a framework for capturing macroscopic, continuum environments, such as metallic electrodes driving a current through a nanoscale contact, impurity, or material. We examine the application of this approach to periodically driven systems, specifically in the context of quantum transport. As with non--equilibrium steady states in time--independent scenarios, the current displays a Kramers' turnover including the formation of a plateau region that captures the physical, continuum limit response. We demonstrate that a simple stability criteria identifies an appropriate relaxation rate to target this physical plateau. Using this approach, we study quantum transport through a periodically driven tilted lattice coupled to two metallic reservoirs held at a finite bias and temperature. We use this model to benchmark the extended reservoir approach and assess the stability criteria. The approach recovers well--understood physical behavior in the limit of weak system--reservoir coupling. Extended reservoirs enable addressing strong coupling and non--linear response as well, where we analyze how transport responds to the dynamics inside the driven lattice. These results set the foundations for the use of extended reservoir approach for periodically driven, quantum systems, such as many--body Floquet states., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

It is now widely accepted that quenches through the critical region of quantum phase transitions result in post-transition states populated with topological defects -- analogs of the classical topological defects. However, consequences of the very non-classical fact that the state after a quench is a {\it superposition} of distinct, broken-symmetry vacua with different numbers and locations of defects have remained largely unexplored. We identify coherent quantum oscillations induced by such superpositions in observables complementary to the one involved in symmetry breaking. These oscillations satisfy Kibble-Zurek dynamical scaling laws with the quench rate, with an instantaneous oscillation frequency set primarily by the gap of the system. In addition to the obvious fundamental significance of a superposition of different broken symmetry states, quantum coherent oscillations can be used to verify unitarity and test for imperfections of the experimental implementations of quantum simulators., version to appear in Phys. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie działań poprzedzających wprowadzenie Polityki Otwartego Dostępu wobec publikacji naukowych na Politechnice Krakowskiej (PK). Działania, których skutkiem było przyjęcie otwartego mandatu na PK, obejmowały m.in.: przygotowanie infrastruktury informatycznej – w tym utworzenie Repozytorium PK, opracowanie dokumentów prawnych, udostępnienie rozpraw doktorskich, wprowadzenie otwartych licencji dla czasopism naukowych wydawanych na PK, działania informacyjne i edukacyjne w zakresie OA. Prace te realizowano zgodnie z wytycznymi zawartymi w dokumentach rządowych oraz na podstawie praktycznych rozwiązań zrealizowanych w instytucjach naukowych. Konsekwencją tych działań było wprowadzenie, na mocy zarządzenia Rektora PK z dnia 22 marca 2019 roku, Polityki Otwartego Dostępu na PK. W podsumowaniu omówiono również dane przedstawione w pierwszym Raporcie z realizacji Polityki Otwartego Dostępu na Politechnice Krakowskiej.

I analyze institutions of prison subculture that mitigate potential violent confrontations among inmates, in contrast to Hobbesian-Zimbardo default spontaneous violence. The games that are relatively rarely played in prison are Chicken and other violent confrontation games. Incoming rookie inmates are subject to initiation tests that allocate them into different subcultural groups, which signals their toughness and disincentivizes fighting. Most experienced inmates develop the eristic skills utilizing prison argot, use informal conflict adjudicators, and fake aggression toward rookies. All inmates form defensive coalitions. Finally, when inmates commit self-injuries, they follow well-rehearsed protocols to minimize the damage to their bodies and to maximize the impression made on the authorities. The secret knowledge of the associated rules, tricks, and cons is passed down over generations of prisoners through informal schooling. The material for this study comes from two Polish prisons, where the author spent 5 months as a political prisoner in 1985.

A rich system of weak non-covalent intermolecular secondary interactions through CH⋯X(Cl, Br)Re, CH⋯O, CO⋯π(Ph), CH⋯πCO, CH⋯O and CH⋯S contacts has been evidenced. Since the beginnings of modern Arabic and Islamic studies in the West in 19th century, there exist a paradigm saying that the “Ottoman Period” (16-19 c.) in the history of Arabic culture and literature did not bring any interesting works, thoughts, ideas and personalities in the Middle East and especially in the North Africa. Nevertheless the last investigations provided as by Arabic as by Western scholars shows that this is not the truth. The achievements of this period are sometimes unexpected. In this context I would like to present shortly three 19th century Moroccan writers, whose output is almost completely neglected by the Orientalists. They are a poet and politician Ibn Idris al-‘Amrawi (1794?-1864), a historian and poet Muhammad al-Kansusi(1796-1877) and a writer and historian Ahmad an-Nasiri (1835-1897). Their literary output is little known in the West, while in Morocco they are treated as most outstanding writers in modern literary history of this country.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is known to contribute to unfavorable short- and long-term outcomes in patients with myocardial infarction (MI). Particularly poor outcomes are associated with left ventricular systolic dysfunction after an MI. The aim of our study was to compare the short- and long-term outcomes of MI in patients with DM and varied degrees of left ventricular systolic dysfunction with the corresponding outcomes in a non-diabetic control group. Methods: This analysis focused on patients with MI registered in the Polish National Registry of Acute Coronary Syndrome between 2009 and 2011. For the purposes of this analysis, diabetic patients were additionally stratified into three subgroups depending on the degree of left ventricular systolic dysfunction, as assessed during their hospitalization for MI. Subsequently, the 30-day, 12-month, and 36-month outcomes in the diabetic study subgroups were compared with those in the corresponding non-diabetic subgroups. Results: This analysis encompassed a nationwide cohort of 58,123 patients. 12- and 36- months mortality was greater in diabetic patients than in non-diabetic patients. The highest 36-month mortality (46.64%) was in the group of patients with DM and reduced EF < 40%. Multivariate analysis showed diabetes and low EF to be independent risk factors for 36-month mortality, increasing the risk of death by 35% for diabetes and by 30% for each 5-percentage point EF decrease. Higher mortality was observed in older patients, smokers, and patients with ischemic heart disease prior to the index hospitalization. Conclusions: Both diabetes and reduced EF proved to be independent risk factors for increased mortality over long-term follow-up after MI.

SummarycAMP signaling pathways are critical for both oncogenesis and tumor suppression. cAMP signaling is localized to multiple spatially distinct microdomains, but the role of cAMP microdomains in cancer cell biology is poorly understood. We developed a tunable genetic system that allows us to activate cAMP signaling in specific microdomains. We uncovered a previously unappreciated nuclear cAMP microdomain that functionally activates a tumor suppressive pathway in a broad range of cancers by inhibiting YAP, a key effector protein of the Hippo pathway, inside the nucleus. We show that nuclear cAMP induces a LATS-dependent pathway leading to phosphorylation of nuclear YAP solely at serine 397, export of YAP from the nucleus, without YAP protein degradation. Thus, nuclear cAMP inhibition of nuclear YAP is distinct from other known mechanisms of Hippo regulation. Pharmacologic targeting of specific cAMP microdomains remains an untapped therapeutic approach for cancer, and since Hippo pathway deregulation can lead to oncogenesis and chemotherapeutic resistance, drugs directed at the nuclear cAMP microdomain may provide new avenues for the treatment of cancer.

Quantum transport simulations are rapidly evolving and now encompass well-controlled tensor network techniques for many-body limits. One powerful approach combines matrix product states with extended reservoirs. In this method, continuous reservoirs are represented by explicit, discretized counterparts and a chemical potential or temperature drop is maintained by external relaxation. Currents are strongly influenced by relaxation when it is very weak or strong, resulting in a simulation analog of Kramers' turnover for solution-phase chemical reactions. At intermediate relaxation, the intrinsic conductance, that given by the Landauer or Meir-Wingreen expressions, moderates the current. We demonstrate that strong impurity scattering (i.e., a small steady-state current) reveals anomalous transport regimes within this methodology at weak-to-moderate and moderate-to-strong relaxation. The former is due to virtual transitions and the latter to unphysical broadening of the populated density of states. Thus, the turnover analog has $five$ standard transport regimes, further constraining the parameters that lead to recovery of the intrinsic conductance. In the worst case, the common strategy of choosing a relaxation strength proportional to the reservoir level spacing can prevent convergence to the continuum limit. This advocates a simulation strategy where one utilizes the current versus relaxation turnover profiles to identify simulation parameters that most efficiently reproduce the intrinsic physical behavior., 16 pages, 5 figures

Parental care is an adaptive behavior increasing the survival of a young. Virulent brood parasites, like the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus, avoid the parental care and leave the care for their nestlings to hosts. Although raising a cuckoo is always costly because it kills host’s progeny, to date it is not known whether raising of a brood parasite itself represents any extra cost affecting host’s fitness, that is, a cost above the baseline levels of care that are expended on raising the host own young anyway. We quantified costs of rearing a cuckoo nestling in the most frequent host, the reed warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus. We measured changes in the host physical (body mass) and physiological conditions (stress levels quantified via heterophils/lymphocytes ratio) within the 1 breeding attempt (immediate cost) and retrapped some of these adults in the next breeding season to estimate return rates as a measure of their survival (future cost). In contrast to universal claims in the literature, raising a cuckoo nestling did not entail any extra immediate or future costs for hosts above natural costs of care for own offsprings. This counterintuitive result might partly reconcile theoretical expectations in the hosts with surprisingly low levels of counter-defences, including the reed warbler. Unexpectedly low raising costs of parasitism may also help explain a long-term maintenance of some host–parasite systems.

The article examines the decision-making components of Jane Austen’s six major novels as reconstructed in Michael Chwe’s book and his argument that Austen was a precursor of game theory. In her novels, Austen describes an abundance of strategic situations in the mating process within the British higher classes. Social constraints made mating within this world a tough game due to harsh punishments for failure, especially for women, and severe limitation on signaling interest or sympathy. Austen cleverly investigates this environment and reconstructs many aspects of strategic behavior that have their counterparts in formal concepts of game and decision theory. While she hasn’t made contributions to theory per se, she deserves being named a precursor of applied strategic thinking and an expert on a particular strategically sophisticated social environment.

This paper presents numerical experiments with assorted versions of parallel LU matrix decomposition algorithms (Gauss and Crout algorithm). The tests have been carried out on the hardware platform with fourcore Skylake processor featuring hyperthreading technology doubling virtually core number. Parallelization algorithms have been implemented with the aid of classic POSIX threads library. Experiments have shown that basic 4-thread acceleration of all parallel implementations is almost equal to the number of threads/processors. Both algorithms are worth considering in real-world applications (Florida University collection). Gauss algorithm is a better performer, with respect to timing, in the case of matrices with lower density of nonzeros, as opposed to higher density matrices. The latter are processed more efficiently with the aid of Crout algorithm implementation.

The fs-TAS data reveal the presence of 2 to 4 transient species decaying in four narrow time windows (generally 125-165 fs, 370-685 fs, 3-6 ps, 30-45 ps). The complexity of these kinetics was explained by studying the photophysical behaviour of ligand L6. Its behaviour is the same as the complexes thus indicating that the ligand dictates the kinetic traits of the Re-species, except for the triplet emission as L6 is not phosphorescent. The triplet lifetime (4.0τP7.0 ns) is considered very short but not unprecedented. Furthermore, the nature of the lowest energy excited states of these chelate compounds and L6 has been addressed using DFT and TDDFT calculations and been assigned to metal-to-ligand (MLCT) and/or intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT).

The two-dimensional infinite projected entangled pair state tensor network is evolved in imaginary time with the full update (FU) algorithm to simulate the Shastry-Sutherland model in a magnetic field at finite temperature directly in the thermodynamic limit. We focus on the phase transition into the $m=\frac{1}{2}$ magnetization plateau, which was observed in experiments on ${\mathrm{SrCu}}_{2}{({\mathrm{BO}}_{3})}_{2}$. For the largest simulated bond dimension, the early evolution in the high-temperature regime is simulated with the simple update (SU) scheme and then, as the correlation length increases, continued with the FU scheme towards the critical regime. We apply a small symmetry-breaking bias field and then extrapolate towards zero bias using a simple scaling theory in the bias field. The combined SU $+$ FU scheme provides an accurate estimate of the critical temperature, even though the results could not be fully converged in the bond dimension in the vicinity of the transition. The critical temperature estimate is improved with a generalized scaling theory that combines two divergent length scales: One due to the bias, and the other due to the finite bond dimension. The obtained results are consistent with the transition being in the universality class of the two-dimensional classical Ising model. The estimated critical temperature is 3.5(2) K, which is well above the temperature 2.1 K used in the experiments.

Sampling a diverse set of high-quality solutions for hard optimization problems is of great practical relevance in many scientific disciplines and applications, such as artificial intelligence and operations research. One of the main open problems is the lack of ergodicity, or mode collapse, for typical stochastic solvers based on Monte Carlo techniques leading to poor generalization or lack of robustness to uncertainties. Currently, there is no universal metric to quantify such performance deficiencies across various solvers. Here, we introduce a new diversity measure for quantifying the number of independent approximate solutions for NP-hard optimization problems. To test this metric, we compare the sampling power of various quantum annealing strategies. We show that the inhomogeneous quantum annealing schedules can redistribute and suppress the emergence of topological defects by controlling space-time separated critical fronts, leading to an advantage over standard quantum annealing schedules with respect to both Time-To-Solution (TTS) and Time-To-Diversity (TTD) for finding rare solutions. Using Path-Integral Monte Carlo simulations for up to 1600 qubits, we demonstrate that non-equilibrium driving of quantum fluctuations, guided by efficient approximate tensor network contractions, can significantly reduce the fraction of hard instances for random frustrated 2D spin-glasses with local fields. Specifically, we observe that by creating a class of algorithmic quantum phase transitions the diversity of solutions can be enhanced by up to 40% with the fraction of hard-to-sample instances reducing by more than 25%., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, references updated

Driving a homogeneous system across a quantum phase transition in a quench-time $\tau_Q$ generates excitations on wavelengths longer than the Kibble-Zurek (KZ) length $\hat\xi\propto\tau_Q^{\nu/(1+z\nu)}$ within the KZ time window $\hat t\propto\tau_Q^{z\nu/(1+z\nu)}$, where $z$ and $\nu$ are the critical exponents. Quenches designed with local time-dependent inhomogeneity can introduce a gap in the spectrum. For a variety of setups with short-range interactions, they have been shown to suppress excitations if the spatial velocity of the inhomogenous front is below the characteristic KZ velocity $\hat v \propto \hat\xi/\hat t$. Ising-like models with long-range interactions can have no sonic horizon, spreading information instantaneously across the system. Usually, this should imply that inhomogenous transitions will render the dynamics adiabatic regardless of the front velocity. However, we show that we get an adiabatic transition with no defects only when the inhomogeneous front moves slower than a characteristic crossover velocity $\tilde v \propto \theta^{(z-1)\nu/(1+\nu)}$, where $\theta$ is the slope of the inhomogeneous front at the critical point. The existence of this crossover velocity and adiabaticity of the model is a consequence of the energy gap in the quasiparticle spectrum that is opened by the inhomogeneity. The cobalt(II) in [Co(NCS)2(4‐methoxypyridine)2]n are linked by pairs of thiocyanate anions into linear chains. In contrast to a previous structure determination, two crystallographically independent cobalt(II) centers have been found to be present. In the antiferromagnetic state, below the critical temperature (T c=3.94 K) and critical field (H c=290 Oe), slow relaxations of the ferromagnetic chains are observed. They originate mainly from defects in the magnetic structure, which has been elucidated by micromagnetic Monte Carlo simulations and ac measurements using pristine and defect samples. The energy barriers of the relaxations are Δτ1=44.9(5) K and Δτ2=26.0(7) K for long and short spin chains, respectively. The spin excitation energy, measured by using frequency‐domain EPR spectroscopy, is 19.1 cm−1 and shifts 0.1 cm−1 due to the magnetic ordering. Ab initio calculations revealed easy‐axis anisotropy for both CoII centers, and also an exchange anisotropy Jxx/Jzz of 0.21. High performance large scale graph analytics is essential to timely analyze relationships in big data sets. Conventional processor architectures suffer from inefficient resource usage and bad scaling on graph workloads. To enable efficient and scalable graph analysis, Intel developed the Programmable Integrated Unified Memory Architecture (PIUMA). PIUMA consists of many multi-threaded cores, fine-grained memory and network accesses, a globally shared address space and powerful offload engines. This paper presents the PIUMA architecture, and provides initial performance estimations, projecting that a PIUMA node will outperform a conventional compute node by one to two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, PIUMA continues to scale across multiple nodes, which is a challenge in conventional multinode setups.

One surprising paradox is a dramatic underrating of the hosts of main tournaments. The hosts, who are absent from the preliminaries, for a long time, play only friendlies that award few points. Three models estimate the magnitude of the resulting “Host Effect” at 14.1-16.7 positions. Such an estimate goes against the intuition that a large investment in hosting a tournament should result in improvement of the host team’s standing. Host’s low ranking decreases the interest in the tournament and may result in a major loss of advertisement revenue.

The nuclei of cells may exhibit invaginations of the nuclear envelope under a variety of conditions. These invaginations form a branched network termed the nucleoplasmic reticulum (NR), which may be found in cells in pathological and physiological conditions. While an extensive NR is a hallmark of cellular senescence and shows associations with some cancers, very little is known about the formation of NR in physiological conditions, despite the presence of extensive nuclear invaginations in some cell types such as endometrial cells. Here we show that in these cells the NR is formed in response to reproductive hormones. We demonstrate that oestrogen and progesterone are sufficient to induce NR formation and that this process is reversible without cell division upon removal of the hormonal stimulus. Nascent lamins and phospholipids are incorporated into the invaginations suggesting that there is a dedicated machinery for its formation. The induction of NR in endometrial cells offers a new model to study NR formation and function in physiological conditions.

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the self-diffusion of ammonia on exfoliated graphite. Using neutron time-of-flight spectroscopy we are able to resolve the ultrafast diffusion process of adsorbed ammonia, NH3, on graphite. Together with van der Waals corrected density functional theory calculations we show that the diffusion of NH3 follows a hopping motion on a weakly corrugated potential energy surface with an activation energy of about 4 meV which is particularly low for this type of diffusive motion. The hopping motion includes further a significant number of long jumps and the diffusion constant of ammonia adsorbed on graphite is determined with D = 3.9 ⋅ 10 − 8 m 2 / s at 94 K.

Wahhabism is a fundamentalist branch of Islam, which was founded in the eighteenth century. It built its stronghold mainly in the region where it was established, on the Arabian Peninsula. Attempts to spread and gain popularity elsewhere in the Islamic world were made by various rulers from the House of Al Su’ud, but never yielded any great results. One such attempt was a letter sent in 1811 by Abd Allah Ibn Su’ud to the ruler of Morocco, Sulayman (known for adopting Salafi ideas), in which Ibn Su’ud elaborated on the nature of his religious doctrine and encouraged its adoption. These events were described by the most important Moroccan historians of the nineteenth century, including Al-Kansusi, Az-Zayyani, and An-Nasiri. This article is an attempt to recapitulate and arrange these records in order.

IMPACT: Our data identify a novel candidate for combination strategy in melanoma treatment, and can inform clinicians in their decision-making process regarding therapeutic intervention for melanoma patients. OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC) is a novel source of cyclic AMP (cAMP). In melanoma, nuclear sAC localization has an established diagnostic utility and we newly found that nuclear sAC functions as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting Hippo pathway, which affects treatment response. Here, we examine the effect of nuclear sAC on melanoma treatment response. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: We developed a doxycycline inducible system for increasing sAC activity only in the nucleus. We assessed whether nuclear sAC activity affects treatment response, using BRAFV600 human melanoma cell lines. Using a clonogenic assay, we examined how nuclear sAC activity affects growth inhibition in the presence of a BRAF inhibitor, vemurafenib. Our findings will be confirmed in vivo using tumor xenografts. After tumor formation in NSG mice, mice will be randomized to be fed normal or doxycycline chow for nuclear sAC induction, then subdivided to receive vehicle or vemurafenib to examine the effect of nuclear sAC activity on treatment response in vivo. We will also compare melanoma biopsies collected before and after treatment with BRAF inhibitors to assess how nuclear sAC staining affects tumor morphology in vivo. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: So far, nuclear sAC activity has rendered SkMel178 and M263 cell lines more susceptible to vemurafenib. Cell viability was inversely correlated both with vemurafenib and with doxycycline concentration. Cell viability after vemurafenib treatment was dramatically reduced when nuclear sAC was activated. It appears that nuclear sAC enhances the sensitivity of BRAF mutant melanomas to vemurafenib in vitro. We anticipate that xenografts of these cells in mice will be more susceptible to vemurafenib when nuclear sAC is activated. We also anticipate that positive nuclear sAC staining will correlate with a favorable response to therapy. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF FINDINGS: Targeted therapy with BRAF inhibitors is used in late-stage melanomas, but its use is limited as patients invariably acquire resistance. Here, we identified nuclear sAC activation as a novel candidate for combination strategy. Our data will also inform clinicians how best to integrate this biomarker into their decision-making regarding therapy.

Quantum transport simulations often use explicit, yet finite, electronic reservoirs. These should converge to the correct continuum limit, albeit with a trade-off between discretization and computational cost. Here, we study this interplay for extended reservoir simulations, where relaxation maintains a bias or temperature drop across the system. Our analysis begins in the non-interacting limit, where we parameterize different discretizations to compare them on an even footing. For many-body systems, we develop a method to estimate the relaxation that best approximates the continuum by controlling virtual transitions in Kramers' turnover for the current. While some discretizations are more efficient for calculating currents, there is little benefit with regard to the overall state of the system. Any gains become marginal for many-body, tensor network simulations, where the relative performance of discretizations varies when sweeping other numerical controls. These results indicate that a given reservoir discretization may have little impact on numerical efficiency for certain computational tools. The choice of a relaxation parameter, however, is crucial, and the method we develop provides a reliable estimate of the optimal relaxation for finite reservoirs., Comment: Manuscript + SI

Circadian rhythm misalignment has been increasingly recognized to pose health risk for a wide range of diseases, particularly metabolic disorders. The liver maintains metabolic homeostasis and expresses many circadian genes, such as differentiated embryo chondrocyte-1 (DEC1) and small heterodimer partner (SHP). DEC1 is established to repress transcription through E-box elements, and SHP belongs to the superfamily of nuclear receptors and has multiple E-box elements in its promoter. Importantly, DEC1 and SHP are inversely oscillated. This study was performed to test the hypothesis that the SHP gene is a target gene of DEC1. Cotransfection demonstrated that DEC1 repressed the SHP promoter and attenuated the transactivation of the classic circadian activator complex of Clock/Bmal1. Site-directed mutagenesis, electrophoretic mobility shift assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation established that the repression was achieved through the E-box in the proximal promoter. Transfection of DEC1 suppressed the expression of SHP. In circadian-inducing cells, the epileptic agent valproate inversely altered the expression of DEC1 and SHP. Both DEC1 and SHP are involved in energy balance and valproate is known to induce hepatic steatosis. Our findings collectively establish that DEC1 participates in the negative loop of SHP oscillating expression with potential implications in metabolic homeostasis.

Reaction of Ni(NCS)2 with 4-(Boc-amino)pyridine in acetonitrile leads to the formation of a new coordination polymer with the composition Ni(NCS)2(4-(Boc-amino)pyridine)2·MeCN (1-MeCN). In the crystal structure the Ni(II) cations are linked by the anionic ligands into chains that are further connected into layers by intermolecular N–H···O hydrogen bonding. These layers are stacked and channels are formed, in which acetonitrile molecules are located. Solvent removal leads to the ansolvate 1, which shows microporosity as proven by sorption measurements. Single crystal X-ray investigations reveal that the solvent removal leads to a change in symmetry from primitive to C-centered, which is reversible and which proceeds via a topotactic reaction leaving the network intact. The magnetic properties of 1-MeCN and 1 are governed by the ferromagnetic exchange between spins of Ni(II) forming chains. The mammalian nuclear envelope (NE) can develop complex dynamic membrane-bounded invaginations in response to both physiological and pathological stimuli. Since the formation of these nucleoplasmic reticulum (NR) structures can occur during interphase, without mitotic NE breakdown and reassembly, some other mechanism must drive their development. Here we consider models for deformation of the interphase NE, together with the evidence for their potential roles in NR formation.

This paper describes the work performed to find the sorption coefficients that represent well the available experimental data for cesium, iodine, and silver on dust particles. The purpose of this work is to generate a set of coefficients that may be recommended for computer code users. The following data was correlated: • I-131 on AVR dust. • Ag-110m on AVR dust. • Cs-134 and Cs-137 on AVR dust. The results are summarized as follows: • The available data can be correlated. The data scatter is about 4 orders of magnitude. Therefore the coefficients of the Langmuir isotherms vary by 4 orders of magnitude. • Sorption rates are higher at low temperatures and lower at high temperatures. This tendency has been observed in the data compiled at Oak Ridge. It is therefore surmised that the highest value of the sorption coefficients are appropriate for the low temperatures and the lowest value of the sorption coefficients are appropriate for the high temperatures. The recommended sorption coefficients are presented in this paper. • The present set of coefficients is very rough and should be a subject for future verification against experimental data.

The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of (E,E)-1,3-bis(arylidene)indan-2-one with diarylnitrilimines, generated in situ via dehydrohalogenation of the corresponding hydrazonoyl chlorides , affords predominantly monospiropyrazolines and as a mixture of diastereoisomers. Also dispiropyrazolines are formed in moderate yields. The structure and stereochemistry of cycloadducts were confirmed by 1H and 13C-NMR spectroscopy, elemental analyses data, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of and .

1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of diaryldiazomethanes Ar2C N2 across Cl3C–CH N–CO2Et 1 yields Δ3-1,2,4-triazolines 2. Thermolysis of 2 leads, via transient azomethine ylides 3, to diaryldichloroazabutadienes [Ar(Ar')C N–CH CCl2] 4. Treatment of 4a (Ar = Ar' = C6H5) and 4c (Ar = Ar' = p-ClC6H4) with NaSR in DMF yields 2-azabutadienes [Ar2C N–C(H) C(SR)2] 5. In contrast, nucleophilic attack of NaStBu on 4 affords azadienic dithioethers [Ar2C N–C(StBu) C(H)(StBu)] (7a Ar = C6H5; 7b Ar' = p-ClC6H4). The reaction of 4a with NaSEt conducted in neat EtSH produces [Ph2C N–C(H)(SEt)–CCl2H] 8, which after dehydrochloration by NaOMe and subsequent addition of NaSEt is converted to [Ph2C N–C(SEt) C(H)(SEt)] 7c. Upon the reaction of 4c with NaSiPr, the intermediate dithioether [(p-ClC6H4)2C N–CH C(SiPr)2] 5k is converted to tetrakisthioether [(p-iPrSC6H4)2C N–CH C(SiPr)2] 6. Treatment of 4a with the sodium salt of piperidine leads to [Ph2C N–CH C(NC5H10)2] 10. The coordination of 6 on CuBr affords the macrocyclic dinuclear Cu(I) complex 11. The crystal structures of 5i, 7a,b, 10 and 11 have been determined by X-ray diffraction.

CuI reacts with E-PhS(CH2CH═CHCH2)SPh, L1, to afford the coordination polymer (CP) [Cu2I2{μ-E-PhS(CH2CH═CHCH2)SPh}2]n (1a). The unprecedented square-grid network of 1 is built upon alternating two-dimensional (2D) layers with an ABAB sequence and contains rhomboid Cu2(μ2-I)2 clusters as secondary building units (SBUs). Notably, layer A, interconnected by bridging L1 ligands, contains exclusively dinuclear units with short Cu···Cu separations [2.6485(7) A; 115 K]. In contrast, layer B exhibits Cu···Cu distances of 2.8133(8) A. The same network is observed when CuBr reacts with L1. In the 2D network of [Cu2Br2{μ-E-PhS(CH2CH═CHCH2)SPh}2]n (1b), isotype to 1a, one square-grid-type layer contains Cu2(μ2-Br)2 SBUs with short Cu···Cu contacts [2.7422(6) A at 115K], whereas the next layer incorporates exclusively Cu2(μ2-Br)2 SBUs with a significantly longer Cu···Cu separation [2.9008(10) A].
