Process-monitoring laboratories in the pulp and paper industry generally use a combination of wet chemical analyses and physical measurements to certify the fitness of a production pulp for a specific end-use. These laboratory tests require time and the effort of trained personnel, limiting their utility for real-time process control. Here we show that Raman probes of unrefined cellulosic pulps, well-suited to the online measurement of in-process materials, can predict the quality attributes of manufactured papers. The accuracy of prediction improves when the covariance is modelled in a reduced measurement space selected by a data-driven, feature-selection technique referred to as a Template Oriented Genetic Algorithm (TOGA). TOGA, combined with discrete wavelet transform (DWT), isolates functional-group features that correlate best with mechanical properties paper derived from refined pulp. Paper makers refine market pulps to build sheet strength using a beating process that decreases freeness as it increases fibre-fibre bonding. Methods demonstrated here predict manufactured sheet properties obtainable after any specified degree of refining from the Raman spectrum of an unrefined pulp. This analysis capacity will enable both vendors of market pulp and makers of sheet paper to specify in advance the amount of beating required to produce a desired product, thereby saving cost and conserving resources.

In this paper, we obtain samples of thermal aging transformer insulation paper at 6 time points through an accelerated thermal aging test that simulates the actual operating state of the transformer. The Raman spectroscopy diagnosis model of transformer insulating paper aging is proposed. The model combines an autoencoder and a linear discriminant analysis algorithm to extract the characteristics of the Raman spectrum, and uses a Naive Bayes classification method to divide the aging stage of the insulating paper. Through the Raman spectroscopy diagnosis model of transformer insulation paper aging designed in this paper, the Raman spectroscopy characteristic quantity extracted by the AE-LDA method can effectively reflect the aging characteristic information of the insulating paper, and the Naive Bayes classification algorithm is used to predict. Research shows that the model has a high predictive accuracy for the assessment of the aging state of insulating paper, and can effectively diagnose the aging state of transformer oil-paper insulation. The Raman spectroscopy used in the diagnosis of the aging of insulating paper has good aging discrimination ability and good application prospects, and provides a new idea for the diagnosis of the aging state of transformer oil-paper insulation.

Paper‐based sensors, microfluidic platforms, and electronics have attracted attention in the past couple of decades because they are flexible, can be recycled easily, environmentally friendly, and inexpensive. Here we report a paper‐based potentiometric sensor to detect the whole Zika virus with a minimum sensitivity of 0.26 nV/Zika and a minimum detectable signal (MDS) of 2.4x107 Zika. Our paper sensor works very similar to a P‐N junction where a junction is formed between two different regions with different electrochemical potentials on the paper. These two regions with slightly different ionic contents, ionic species and concentrations, produce a potential difference given by the Nernst equation. Our paper sensor consists of 2‐3 mm x 10 mm segments of paper with conducting silver paint contact patches on two ends. The paper is dipped in a buffer solution containing aptamers designed to bind to the capsid proteins on Zika. We then added the Zika (in its own buffer) to the region close to one of the silver‐paint contacts. The Zika virus (40 nm diameter with 43 kDa or 7.1x10‐20 gm weight) became immobilized in the paper’s pores and bonded with the resident aptamers creating a concentration gradient. Atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy were carried out to verify that both the aptamer and Zika become immobilized in the paper. The potential measured between the two silver paint contacts reproducibly became more negative upon adding the Zika. We also showed that a Liquid Crystalline Display (LCD) powered by the sensor can be used to read the sensor output.

Paper based thermoresistive sensors are fabricated by rubbing WS2 powder against a piece of standard copier paper, like the way a pencil is used to write on paper. The abrasion between the layered material and the rough paper surface erodes the material, breaking the weak van der Waals interlayer bonds, yielding a film of interconnected platelets. The resistance of WS2 presents a strong temperature dependence, as expected for a semiconductor material in which charge transport is due to thermally activated carriers. This strong temperature dependence makes the paper supported WS2 devices extremely sensitive to small changes in temperature. This exquisite thermal sensitivity, and their fast response times to sudden temperature changes, is exploited thereby demonstrating the usability of a WS2-on-paper thermal sensor in a respiration monitoring device., 6 main text figures, 1 table, 6 supp. info. figures

This study explored the relationship between syntactic complexity and rhetorical functions and the relationship between syntactic complexity and level of move/step realization in learner-generated research paper introductions. We created a corpus of 79 introductions written by undergraduate L2 students at intermediate to high-intermediate levels. We annotated the introductions for moves and steps, measured their syntactic complexity at the global, clausal, and phrasal levels, and rated their level of move/step realization across four levels (no, low, intermediate, and high). We conducted one-way MANOVA, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple linear regression analyses. We found sentences realizing Reviewing items of previous research function to be significantly longer than other steps in Move1 and to contain significantly more clausal and phrasal complexity features. Sentences performing Claiming centrality function also demonstrated significantly more phrasal complexity features as measured by complex nominals per clause. We also found a higher level of phrasal complexity in introductions with a higher level of move/step realization, which can be attributed to introductions including Step1 and Step3, rather than containing all steps. Our findings imply that there is value in developing explicit instructions on how to use complex structures in performing rhetorical steps in research paper introductions. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

We fabricate paper-supported semiconducting devices by rubbing a layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) crystal onto a piece of paper, similarly to the action of drawing/writing with a pencil on paper. We show that the abrasion between the MoS2 crystal and the paper substrate efficiently exfoliates the crystals, breaking the weak van der Waals interlayer bonds and leading to the deposition of a film of interconnected MoS2 platelets. Employing this simple method, that can be easily extended to other 2D materials, we fabricate MoS2-on-paper broadband photodectectors with spectral sensitivity from the ultraviolet (UV) to the near-infrared (NIR). Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been widely used in biomedical sensing with the advantages of high sensitivity and label-free. However, the fabrication of SERS substrates with good Raman activity, reproducibility, and low cost is still under development in practical applications. This paper presents a practicable method for fabricating Au NP/paper strips by using inkjet printing and seed mediated growth. Small gold seed synthesized by borohydride reduction was used as ink and printed on the filter paper. The printed gold seed grew in situ in the growth solution and formed the gold nanoparticle (Au NP)/paper strips. The fabricated paper strip was characterized by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The diffuse reflectance spectra indicated that the Au NP/paper strips had two local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peaks: the short one at around 540 nm and the long one located in the range of 640–840 nm. And the long LSPR peak firstly shifted to red then to blue with the increased concentrations of silver ions in growth solution. From the SEM images, the shape of grown Au NPs was diverse, including sphere, rod, ellipsoid, dimer, trimer, and big aggregates. We thought the short peak came from the LSPR of nanospheres and the transvers LSPR of rod and ellipsoid like particles, while the long peak mainly came from the plasmonic coupling of dimer along the inter-particle axis. The obtained Au NP/paper strip with the long peak located around 650 nm had the highest SERS activity, which could be attributed to the plasmon resonance induced local field enhancement and nanogap effect. Also, the SERS performance results indicated the printed SERS strips exhibited satisfied uniformity and stability, demonstrating the potential of Au NP/paper strip in real-world applications.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) performance of filter paper (FP) loaded with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) of three different size/shapes (spherical, triangular and star) were investigated. Spherical Au NPs were synthesized using femtosecond laser ablation of Au target in distilled water and other two anisotropic (triangular and star-shaped) Au NPs were prepared by colloidal chemical methods. COMSOL Multiphysics simulations were performed to investigate near field distributions of these Au NPs and as expected, the strongly enhanced near-field intensity at the sharp features was observed. The SERS performance [using the dye molecule Nile Blue (NB)] of star-shaped Au NPs loaded FP was superior compared to the triangle and spherical Au NPs loaded FP due to the presence of sharp tips and thus it was proved to be capable of detecting 10 pM NB concentration with an estimated enhancement factor of ∼3.7×1010.

Raman spectroscopy, with its specific ability to generate a unique fingerprint‐like spectrum of certain substances, has attracted much attention in diagnosing the ageing degree of oil–paper insulation. In this study, the feature extraction and ageing diagnosis methods of oil–paper insulation Raman spectroscopy data are further studied. Based on the non‐linear analysis of Raman spectra of different ageing samples, kernel principal component analysis was applied to extract the spectral features, and the back‐propagation neural network was used to build a diagnosis model with high diagnostic accuracy. The results show that Raman spectroscopy combined with kernel principal component analysis and the back‐propagation neural network can diagnose the ageing state of oil–paper insulation, with a diagnostic accuracy of 91.43% (64/70). The proposed method provides an effective and feasible method for the ageing assessment of oil‐immersed electrical equipment.

A non-destructive method based on Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) was proposed to estimate the date of paper from different years in this article. For the paper samples, dated from 1940 to 1980, naturally aged and conserved in library. Partial least squares-discriminate analysis (PLS-DA), Logistic regression and convolutional neural network (CNN), were employed to evaluate the date of paper, with the accuracy 60.74%, 95.31% and 98.77%, respectively. Based on the characteristics of CNN model and with the help of network localization, active variables could be recognized in the whole spectrum. Although the localization of active variables showed a discriminative pattern, the selected spectral regions were similar. Most important variables focused on the 1700–1400 cm−1, were corresponding to cellulose crystallinity, which was consisted with the ageing processing. The present work gave the potential of FT-IR combined with chemometric techniques could estimate the dating of unknown paper. Meanwhile, the analysis of active variables obtained further indicated the worthy of CNN model for document dating.

Photographs are taken as valid evidences in various scenarios of our day to day life. Because of the developments in the field of Image Processing, altering images according to ones need is not a difficult task. Techniques of Image Forensics play its crucial role at this juncture. One of the mostly found types of image tampering is Copy-Move forgery. A copy-move forgery is performed by copying a region in an image and pasting it on another region in the same image, mostly after some form of post-processing like rotation, scaling, blurring, noise addition, JPEG compression etc. Two types of copy-move forgery detection techniques exist in literature. They are the Block based methods and Key-point based methods. Both the methods have their own advantages and limitations. This paper presents a survey on the recent developments in block based methods. As forgeries have become popular, the importance of forgery detection is much increased. Copy-move forgery, one of the most commonly used methods, copies a part of the image and pastes it into another part of the image. In this paper, we propose a detection method of copy-move forgery that localizes duplicated regions using Zernike moments. Since the magnitude of Zernike moments is algebraically invariant against rotation, the proposed method can detect a forged region even though it is rotated. Our scheme is also resilient to the intentional distortions such as additive white Gaussian noise, JPEG compression, and blurring. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is appropriate to identify the forged region by copy-rotate-move forgery.

In the present study, life estimation of accelerated aged insulating papers used in rotating machines is estimated by Arrhenius model. Various types of insulating papers used in rotating machines such as Mylar, Nomex-Mylar-Nomex(NMN), Leatheroid, Dacron-Mylar-Dacron(DMD), Mica Tape, and Kapton are thermally aged at 90°C, 130°C and 170°C with 300hrs duration of each sample. These insulating materials wrapped on copper conductor with single and double layer. Then, breakdown voltage test is performed at each temperature for both single and double layer papers to determine their dielectric strength. Further, correlation analysis between breakdown voltage and different applied temperatures is performed for all paper samples. Popular Arrhenius plot is drawn by short term test data on breakdown voltage for an extrapolation to long term performance of various types of insulating paper used in rotating machines. The results showed that the performance of double layer insulation is almost twice than single layer performance. The aging analysis and testing of insulating papers was performed in TIFAC-Core centre of NIT Hamirpur, H.P., India.

Drying experiments of two paper mill sludge were carried using hot air with a temperature range of 50?C - 80?C and an air velocity of 0.96 m/son a laboratory convective dryer. The drying characteristics were discussed and the drying kinetic equation was solved. The dependence of the reaction rate constant on the drying temperature was given by Arrhenius equation, and the activation energies for moisture diffusion in paper mill sludge sample A and B were found to be 21.53 kJ/mol and 15.38 kJ/mol, respectively.

The interaction of plasmonic nanoparticles with a dielectric platform gives rise to unique optical behaviors and this can be maneuvered to improve the plasmonic/SERS performances of a substrate. Herein, dielectric modified plasmonic-paper SERS substrate is developed by assembling Ag@SiO2 nanocubes on Fe-TiO2 nanosheets (NS) modified paper. The Fe-TiO2 NS being visible light responsive significantly alters the optical property of the paper and serves as a dielectric underlay for the Ag nanocubes. Hence, the incident light reflected back from the dielectric nanosheets couples with the scattered light from the Ag nanocubes leading to spatially enhanced electromagnetic field improving the SERS enhancement. The prepared dielectric modified plasmonic-paper has an average enhancement factor (EF) of 1.49 × 107 using R6G as a probe molecule. This value is superior to unmodified plasmonic-paper highlighting the coupling effect of the dielectric nanosheets. The substrate shows robust detection performance for thiabendazole and achieves a limit of detection (LOD) of 19 μg/L, which is 4-fold more sensitive than unmodified plasmonic paper. Direct swabbing test of thiabendazole sprayed apple fruit shows a discernible Raman signal down to 15 ppb indicating the utility of the substrate for point-of-need applications in food safety.

The dirty paper wiretap channel, also referred to as the Gaussian wiretap channel with noncausal channel state at the transmitter, plays an important role in wireless physical layer security. In this paper, the dirty paper wiretap channel is revisited by considering actions on the channel state, i.e., the transmitter generates an action sequence that affects the formation of the channel state. Lower and upper bounds on the secrecy capacity of this model are proposed, and numerical results indicate that the actions on the state help to increase the achievable secrecy rate of the dirty paper wiretap channel. The study of this paper offers a new option for enhancing the secrecy rates of the state-dependent wiretap channel models.

A novel, simple, and inexpensive flexible surface-enhanced Raman-scattering (SERS) platform based on common laboratory filter paper modified with T i 3 C 2 T x flakes was reported. T i 3 C 2 T x synthesized from a T i 3 A l C 2 phase with a mixture of HCl and LiF and T i 3 C 2 T x nanosheets were characterized by the TEM, XRD, UV–Vis spectrum, and Raman spectrum. Paper-based substrate has been proven to sample on rough and irregular surfaces. Thus, T i 3 C 2 T x was further manufactured as paper substrate by the immersion method to transfer nanosheets to filter paper. SERS activity of prepared substrate was demonstrated using R6G by the same filter paper modified with and without T i 3 C 2 T x , and various concentrations of R6G were tested to prove the sensitivity of the substrates. Further detection of CV and MG certified the universality of paper substrate based on T i 3 C 2 T x nanosheets for detection of organic pollutants. The uniformity and stability were proved by CV and R6G molecules. This SERS platform combines the advantages of 2D material and flexible paper scaffolds, resulting in a highly sensitive, cost-efficient, and easy-to-manufacture large-scale flexible substrate and is expected to be used in practice.

In this paper we propose to implements blockchain technology for Internet of Things (IoT) networks that use Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) consensus algorithm. To eliminate the reliance on a single leader and improve performance, we propose to allow multiple leaders to propose request batches independently and, possibly, concurrently, by using different overlay networks. Nodes participate in parallel consensus rounds without contention, and they only contend with others to reserve the next available spot for the atomic insertion of a new transaction batch or block into the replicated blockchain ledger. We develop an analytical model for the multiple leader PBFT ordering service by using a Discrete-time Markov chain. Our evaluations show that our model outperforms the original multiple entry point PBFT protocol in a wide range of parameter values, and that it scales well with the number of orderer nodes in the PBFT committee and block arrival rate.

The intelligent task of semantically assigning a paper to a reviewer with respect to his knowledge domain remains a challenging task in academic conferences. From literature, a number of automated reviewer assignment systems have been presented which are based on distributional semantic models such as Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) have been used to capture semantics. Thus, this study presents the comparative study of the three models based on their derived suitability scores between a paper meant for review and a reviewer’s representation papers. From the experimental results obtained, it shows that TF-IDF outperformed the accuracy level of the other two models by a substantial margin.

Thermochemical heat storage materials for space heating applications such as, ZnSO4 offer high energy storage density, low cost and clean mean of long-term solar energy storage. Herein, we studied the ZnSO4 hydrated salt as potential heat storage material at low temperature and furthermore observed the impact of temperature and concentration on the dehydration/hydration process and enthalpy. The thermal behavior of ZnSO4•7H2O was investigated by applying various dehydration temperatures. The results showed that 85% of water loosed at 100 °C temperature, which released 699 J/g (1.37 GJ/m3) in the dehydration process. The hydration process of ZnSO4.7H2O at 100 °C recovered 541 J/g enthalpies, which delivered 1.1 GJ/m3. Similarly, the dehydration result obtained at 150 °C was the same as showed at 100 °C. However, the enthalpy of hydration was 20% less than prior. The XRD result showed that at higher temperatures agglomeration appeared followed by Van der Waals forces which affect the hydration rate. The result of good cyclability and larger water sorption performance of ZnSO4 make them a promising and suitable for heat storage in space heating application, which can be used as thermochemical heat storage material for thermal storage devices.

Objective To increase clinician adherence to mammography screening guidelines. Design Quality improvement initiative. Setting/Local Problem At a nurse practitioner–led primary care practice, a chart audit of adherence to American Cancer Society mammography screening guidelines indicated a 12% adherence rate for clinicians writing mammography orders. Participants Nurse practitioners providing care to women ages 40 years and older. Intervention/Measurements The intervention was a screening checklist that was completed by the woman at registration and given to the clinician during the examination. The pre- and postintervention measurement was the percentage of mammogram orders. A Fisher exact test was used to examine changes from pre- to postintervention rates of adherence. Results After the intervention, the percentage of women for whom a mammogram was recommended and ordered was 69.6%, compared to 12% from the original chart audit. This change was statistically significant (p = .01). Conclusion Clinicians must find efficient approaches to improve processes within their practice settings to ensure that preventive care recommendations are made during visits. Although the screening checklist was deemed useful, improvement in adherence rates is still needed, and a paperless system should be initiated.

People re-identification is a fundamental stage in video surveillance systems. This stage is used for determining the labels of the people’s images usually based on their visual similarities. The appearance salience caused by wearing the clothes and carrying objects, with specific colors can be used for improving the performance of re-identification systems. To address the mentioned point, in this paper, we propose a color-based re-ranking process. In the proposed approach first, the input images are semantically segmented as: person’s body, possible carried objects, and background. Then the most frequent colors of person’s body and possible carried objects are used to re-order the ranked results obtained from two commonly used re-identification approaches i.e., Gaussian of Gaussian (GOG) and Hierarchical Gaussian Descriptors (HGDs). Experimental results on various people re-identification datasets show that our proposed re-ranking approach can improve the performance of re-identification systems.

The appearance or printing quality of paper surfaces is mostly characterized by their glossiness, measured with a glossmeter as specular reflectance. The gloss properties of a base paper substrate can be improved after application of a poly(styrene-co-maleimide) nanoparticle coating under pure conditions or in the presence of different vegetable oils. The specular gloss properties of 11 different nanoparticle paper coatings have been determined under 75 degrees and 85 degrees incident light angles, with good relation between values along parallel (machine) and perpendicular (transverse) direction. The gloss properties for the different coatings have been further related to the surface topography. Therefore, the statistical and spatial surface roughness parameters have been studied in detail at two length scales including non-contact profilometry (1 x 1 mm(2)) and atomic force microscopy (2 x 2 m(2)). Based on values of the Rayleigh parameter for non-contact profilometry, the surfaces can be considered as optically rough. The gloss values cannot be directly related to statistical surface roughness parameters. Otherwise, an experimental power-law model for gloss has been proposed as a function of (/Sq) with correlation length and root-mean-square roughness Sq. A best-fit model illustrates that gloss properties of various nanoparticle paper coatings mainly relate to the spatial surface roughness parameters determined from non-contact profilometry. The extraordinary graphene material has brought about extensive attention in space engineering for outstanding characteristics. The reduced graphene oxide paper (rGOP) was irradiated by 500 keV proton in a ground-based irradiation simulator. The results show that the spacing of layer to layer was increased after irradiation, while the oxygen functional group was decreased. The result of XPS and Raman spectroscopy indicates that the sp3 carbon and defects increased, and the disorder structure in high fluence irradiated materials also increased. Furthermore, the performance degradation for thermal stability and electrical property of rGOP is contributed to the combination of defects and disordered structure.

History has been kind to Christian Bohr (1855–1911). His name is attached eponymously to three different areas of respiratory physiology. The first is the Bohr dead space, which refers to the portion of the tidal volume that does not undergo gas exchange. The second is the increase in oxygen affinity of hemoglobin caused by the addition of carbon dioxide to the blood. This is known as the Bohr effect and is a very important feature of gas exchange, both in the lung and in peripheral tissues. Both of these contributions by Bohr are familiar to most students. Bohr’s third contribution refers to the calculation of the changes in the Po2 of blood as oxygen is loaded in the pulmonary capillary, the so-called Bohr integration. This contribution is less well known now, partly because of the advent of digital computing, but it was important in its day. The analysis is challenging because the very nonlinear shape of the oxygen dissociation curve means that the Po2 difference between the alveolar gas and the capillary blood, which is the driving pressure for diffusion, changes in a complicated way. All three papers are in German, and two of them are long and tedious to read. English translations are available, but few people read the papers, despite the fact that the first two articles are very frequently cited. In the present article, Bohr’s contributions are reviewed, and some parts of the articles that are particularly difficult to understand are clarified.

A paper-based device is a promising technology for point-of-care testing (POCT). In this work, a novel fluorescent probe with red emission (650 nm) and a large Stokes shift (∼170 nm) for Cys detection was reported for the first time. This probe exhibited a highly selective and rapid response to Cys within 5 min. Importantly, by introducing this probe into microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs), a paper-based device was developed for simple, high-throughput and highly sensitive detection of Cys. Finally, satisfactory performance of this paper-based device for Cys detection was achieved in real samples, which indicates the great potential of our strategy in the construction of POCT systems for detecting analytes.

This study explores the method of applying surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in diagnosing the aging stage of oil-paper insulation equipment in the power system, which provides access to the on-line mornitoring of electrical equipment. Oil-paper samples in different aging stages were obtained by accelerated aging experiments. Effective Raman signals of insulating oil were collected by using the self-made hexagonal sliver nano-plates SERS substrates and the self-assembled Raman detection platform. For the SERS data of oil-paper insulation samples, kernel entropy component analysis (KECA) was applied to extract the Raman spectral features and support vector machine (SVM) was used to recognize the the aging stage of oil-paper insulation. The results demonstrate that the KECA-SVM method exhibits a good diagnostic capacity and the recognition accuracy of the propsed method reached 81.43 % (57/70). In summary, a new spectral method is proposed to diagnose the aging stage of oil-paper insulation, which lays a foundation for the actual diagnosis of the aging condition in running oil-paper insulation equipment by Raman spectroscopy.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of paper mill plant, which is a very key factor in improving its production. A number of safety challenges can be successfully fixed for a paper mill to continue to make further improvements in reliability, safety and economics. Many incidents in the paper mill plants are frequently caused by human error and equipment failure. Many of the incidents are generally based on poor managerial strategies. These types of errors could have been prevented if safety instructions had been correctly followed and supported in the maintenance system. Design/methodology/approach – A paper mill plant mainly consists four sections namely the head box, wire part, press part and dryer. All these four parts are connected in series configuration. The authors have developed a mathematical model for the plant in which power supply is in standby mode. The designed system can fail in five ways, i.e. by the failure of head box failure, wire part failure, press part failure, dryer failure and power (electricity) failure. So to make proper functioning of paper machine and no interruption in power supply, the authors have considered that power supply is in standby mode. Findings – Using the supplementary variable technique, the Laplace transformations and Markov process theory, the reliability indices of the paper mill plant model are determined. Originality/value – In the present paper, the authors have developed a mathematical model based on a paper plant machine.

The proposed system is automation of paper setting and identification of difficulty level of questions and question papers, which uses blooms taxonomy categorization to classify the questions in easy, medium and high categories. By using blooms taxonomy, the difficulty level of question can be identified, which is helpful in generating qualitative question paper. While categorizing questions, system uses natural language pre-processing techniques, which are understood by computer and also uses Latent Dirichlet Allocation algorithm. Based on paper setter’s requirement, paper setting is done; also, if user wants to check difficulty level of any question paper then this is also done by proposed system using NLP. The paper setting using difficulty measure is right benchmark for evaluating student’s efficiency. Automation of paper setting improves the speed, and difficulty level module improves the quality.

The effect of variation of radio frequency (rf) power on the structural, optical and electronic properties of intrinsic hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) films deposited at very low substrate temperature (Ts) 110 °C were studied. These films were prepared varying rf power (40-70 W) on borosilicate glass, photo paper and c-Si substrates using rf-plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (13.56 MHz) technique. All films show amorphous structure confirmed by Raman measurement and also supported by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) measurements. SE results show that at higher rf power, amplitude of peak decreases and broadening increases due to increase in void density. Intrinsic layer with optimized rf power was used for fabricating n-i-p solar cell on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyimide (PI), photo paper and rigid glass. The efficiency of solar cells fabricated on flexible PET and PI is 3.30% and 3.36%, which is close to 3.82% on rigid glass. In case of solar cells on photo paper, an efficiency of ~ 1.08% was obtained. The studies show that it is possible to fabricate a-Si:H based solar cells on photo paper and other substrates at very low Ts.

Paper-based SERS sensor has attracted considerable attention recently, resulting from the separation, aggregation and high sensitive detection of biomolecules. However, optical losses, caused by the holes or “vase”-like defects, affect the overall intensity of the electromagnetic (EM) coupling and then the Raman signal. Silver nanoflowers (AgNFs) connected with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) arrays are proposed and firstly obtained onto such “vase” surface to enhance the EM coupling. AgNFs are easily self-assembled on the defects, and the closed packed AgNPs can be formed on the other area. Multiple cascaded amplification mechanisms (localized surface plasmon mode and optical standing waves or refraction) are used to promote the EM magnification. Such paper card is also exploited successfully as an integrated platform, allowing for ultra-sensitivity (1 × 10−19M) CV and (1 × 10−20M) R6G detection.

Integrated valve microfluidics has an unparalleled capability to automate the rapid delivery of fluids at the nanoliter scale for high-throughput biological experimentation. However, multilayer soft lithography, which is used to fabricate valve-microfluidics, produces devices with a minimum thickness of around five millimeters. This form-factor limitation prevents the use of such devices in experiments with limited sample thickness tolerance such as 4-pi microscopy, stimulated Raman scattering microscopy, and many forms of optical or magnetic tweezer applications. We present a new generation of integrated valve microfluidic devices that are less than 300 μm thick, including the cover-glass substrate, that resolves the thickness limitation. This "thin-chip" was fabricated through a novel soft-lithography technique that produces on-chip micro-valves with the same functionality and reliability of traditional thick valve-microfluidic devices despite the orders of magnitude reduction in thickness. We demonstrated the advantage of using our thin-chip over traditional thick devices to automate fluid control while imaging on a high-resolution inverted microscope. First, we demonstrate that the thin-chip provides improved signal to noise when imaging single cells with two-color stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). We then demonstrated how the thin-chip can be used to simultaneously perform on-chip magnetic manipulation of beads and fluorescent imaging. This study reveals the potential of our thin-chip in high-resolution imaging, sorting, and bead capture-based single-cell multi-omics applications.

Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the consistency between the WeChat-based Pelvic Organ Prolapse/Urinary Incontinence Sexual Questionnaire short form (PISQ-12) in Chinese and the paper version and to determine the test–retest reliability of the WeChat questionnaire. Methods: A total of 120 women aged between 24 and 69 years were recruited from the outpatient clinic at Peking Union Medical College Hospital and randomly assigned to two groups. All participants completed the WeChat and paper questionnaires twice. Group A completed the paper questionnaire before the WeChat version; Group B completed the WeChat questionnaire before the paper version. Two weeks later, all participants completed the questionnaires in the opposite order. Then, the reliability and validity of the two versions were assessed using Pearson correlation coefficients, intraclass correlation coefficients, and Bland-Altman graphs. Results: No significant difference in completion time was found between the two versions of the Chinese PISQ-12 (P = 0.67). In this paper, we present a plug and play Rock-Paper-Scissors game set that utilizes CNN-based static hand gesture recognition and a Markov chain-based bot. Each game round, the camera output is fed to the neural network and the hand gesture result is compared to the current Markov chain state. We utilize a CNN trained with a dataset containing rock-paperscissors hand gestures and unwanted inputs, and a multi-state Markov chain. Automated tests confirm the bot prediction capabilities and practical tests verify the precision of static hand gesture recognition. Tests against a verification dataset reveal a recognition accuracy of 97.4%.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is highly promising for ultra-sensitive detection in a series of applications. Although extensive advances have been achieved in SERS technologies, the preparation of highly efficient SERS substrates still suffers from several limitations, including complex preparation procedures, high cost, and instability for long time storage. To address these problems, we report a novel, to the best of our knowledge, SERS platform that combines graphene oxide (GO) and cellulose composite paper with colloidal silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) ink. As an efficient substrate, the GO and cellulose composite paper that features hierarchical micro-nanostructures and improved interaction with target molecules can be fabricated on a large scale, and the Ag NP ink can be well stored, avoiding being oxidized in ambient conditions. In this way, our SERS platform not only reduces the cost, but also improved the stability. The sensitivity, reproducibility, and tunable SERS detection performance were evaluated using rhodamine 6G as probing molecules. To demonstrate the capability of our SERS platform in practical analysis, the SERS spectra of two monosodium salt solutions of different concentrations have been collected. The SERS platform has revealed great potential for practical application of SERS technologies.

To assess the aging of oil-paper insulation, an accelerated aging experiment is executed. Raman spectroscopy, a nondestructive detection method with access to component identification and fault diagnosis, is used to analyze the aging of oil-paper insulation. Raman feature of oil-paper insulation aging with a close relationship with the degree of polymerization is obtained based on the concept of quadratic mutual information. By analyzing the relationship between the extracted feature and the degree of polymerization of samples at different aging degrees, the feasibility of reflecting the aging degree of oil-paper insulation is determined. By load analysis, the chemical correlation between the extracted feature and oil-paper insulation aging is clarified. For eight test samples, the prediction error of degree of polymerization based on Raman features is less than 50. These results show that the features extracted in this paper are helpful to realizing the Raman spectrum diagnosis of oil-paper insulation aging.

In order to assess the moisture content of insulating pressboard in oil-immersed transformer, and thus providing reliable guidance for insulation condition and life estimation of oil-immersed transformer, in this paper, we made four groups of oil-paper insulation samples with different moisture content under laboratory conditions and studied the relationship between pressboard and moisture content by using polarization and depolarization current (PDC) technique. The experiment result shows that PDC curve is very sensitive to the change of moisture content, and the change of moisture content mainly affects the tail of depolarization current curve; the extended Debye model parameters can be obtained from depolarization current curve, and as the moisture content increases the number of branches in Debye model increases, the largest time constant becomes large; the peak of time domain spectroscopy turn up at 1000s., the time constant branch which is longer than 1000s presents the pressboard branches of Debye model; the feature quantity Q paper can show the internal polarization of insulating paper and has a linear fitting relationship with moisture content, so Q paper can be used to assess the moisture content of insulating pressboard.

Mercury (Hg) is a kind of the most common heavy metals with high toxicity in nature, existing in water, soil, and even food. Hence, it is of great importance to develop a simple, effective way to detect Hg2+. Flexible sensing has attracted extensive attention in recent years, which can be flexibly applied in various detection environments. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) with conjugation structure which can accelerate the transfer of electrons and inhibit the recombination of carriers is favorable to the photoelectrochemical (PEC) process. Here, Br doped PEDOT modified carbon paper with narrower bandgap was firstly fabricated through situ thermal polymerization which exhibited high photocurrent intensity under visible-light irradiation. The success synthesis of PEDOT was confirmed by SEM, XPS, FT-IR and Raman spectrum. Meanwhile, the as-prepared electrode can be mass produced with good reproducibility. Based on excellent performance of as-prepared electrode of Br doped PEDOT/carbon paper, we constructed a PEC sensing platform for Hg2+ detection with the detection limit of 0.3 nM and linear range from 1 nM to 450 nM. In addition, the PEC sensor exhibited speedy response, outstanding stability, excellent selectivity, wide linear range, and was used for determination of Hg2+ in river water samples with recover range of 97.7–104.5 % and RSD of 2.8–4.7 %.

Paper illustrates the process of topic modeling and text classification. Specifically, the dataset used is a corpus consisting of scientific publications published by Neural Information Systems Processing Conference. Topic modeling itself is performed using Latent Dirichlet Allocation model. It is followed by optimization of a number of topics on the basis of topic coherence, a quality measure of human interpretability. Results of topic modeling are used for labeling data prior to text classification. Labels are determined based on the distribution of assigned papers' topics over time. Specifically, peak changes used for differentiating between time periods dominated by specific topics are calculated as a Kullback-Leibler divergence. Finally, transforming data into the feature vectors, several different text classification approaches are evaluated. As observed, the greatest accuracy score is recorded for the use of extreme gradient boosting classifier being 77.1%.

Silver nanoparticle films on glass and paper were prepared using vacuum pulsed laser deposition, and various methods of atmospheric pulsed laser deposition, where ablated material forms a nanoparticle aerosol near the target and is delivered in a gas flow to the substrate. The performance of the films for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was investigated using a 10–4 M aqueous solution of rhodamine 6G organic dye. The SERS sensitivity was quantified in terms of the apparent enhancement factor and the signal-to-noise ratio. For the films made by supersonic atmospheric pulsed laser deposition, the apparent enhancement factor was found to be 15,000, which is 150 times higher than the value for a commercial silver nanoparticle paper-based substrate. This study demonstrates the utility of atmospheric pulsed laser deposition for the fabrication of noble metal nanoparticle films, and offers new approaches to tailoring the particle morphology for high SERS performance.

In this study, we developed a cost-effective ion-sensing field-effect transistor (FET) with an extended gate (EG) fabricated on a separative paper substrate. The pH sensing characteristics of the paper EG was compared with those of other EGs fabricated on silicon, glass, or polyimide substrates. The fabricated paper-based EGFET exhibited excellent sensitivity close to the Nernst response limit as well as to that of the other substrate-based EGFETs. In addition, we found that all EGFETs, regardless of the substrate, have similar non-ideal behavior, i.e., drift phenomenon and hysteresis width. To investigate the degradation and durability of the paper EG after prolonged use, aging-effect tests were carried out in terms of the hysteresis width and sensitivity over a course of 30 days. As a result, the paper EG maintained stable pH sensing characteristics after 30 days. Therefore, we expect that paper EGFETs can provide a cost-effective sensor platform.

Paper cooperation network embodies expert topic similarity in an extent, thus, a novel method is proposed for expert topic analysis and extraction by combining paper cooperation network and topic model. In the method, we extract each paper’ author information and construct an expert cooperation network. At the same time, by means of LDA model, a probabilistic topic model is also built to analyze papers’ latent topics. Then, by making full use of the feature that adjacent nodes in the expert cooperation network share similar themes distribution, we makes a constraint on expert topic distribution in Gibbs sampling process of solving the probabilistic topic model. Experimental results on NIPS dataset show that the proposed method can effectively extract expert topics, and the expert paper cooperation network plays a very good supporting role on the extracting task.

Knowledge of the actual shape of the point spread function (PSF) is of the utmost importance for paper and print quality assessment, since the PSF represents the degree of lateral scattering of light which is closely associated with the size of the optical dot gain. Importance of the correct shape of the PSF prompted us to propose a new experimental method for determining optical component of PSF of a paper substrate by studying the interaction of collimated light and paper and at the same time demonstrate superiority of the Lorentzian shaped PSF compared to the Gaussian, which is commonly used in the description of the PSF. Additionally, measured profile of the scattered light was compared with the profile obtained from Monte Carlo simulation for identical wavelength of incident light. Once the shape of the optical PSF was determined, FTIR spectra of samples were recorded and analysed, aiming to determine how the ratio of chemical and mechanical pulp influences the shape of the optical PSF. All results indicate better approximation of Lorentzian PSF compared to Gaussian, and imply correlation between the share of mechanical and chemical pulp in paper and characteristics of PSF.

Paper being the basis of different documents is often the subject of forensic examination. Growing number of bogus or in other manner fraudulently alternated documents causes necessity of identification of individual paper sheets and discrimination between sheets being the parts of analyzed questioned document. Frequently it is necessary to distinguish between paper of the same type but of a different age. Thus, it is essential to know whether the degradation process of paper influences the possibility of differentiation between paper samples. Samples of five types of office paper from different manufacturers were artificially aged in a climatic chamber under 65% relative humidity in air at 90 °C for various periods of time up to 35 days. The conditioned samples were examined by the use of infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Three cards of each paper type were chosen for the experiment. Three different spots on each paper card were measured to assure reproducibility of the experiment in both spectroscopic methods. The possibility of differentiation between aged samples was evaluated. The 2D correlation analysis based on the Noda’s method was carried out using ATR FTIR spectra as an input data for generating the correlation maps. It was found that pattern of 2D maps allow to distinguish tested paper samples, identified its components and get insight into paper degradation mechanism.
