The significance for ethnobotany in Cuba of a letter written in 1848 by Tomás Pío Betancourt, which was later published by Miguel Rodríguez Ferrer, is valued. It reflects on the particularities of the context and the people involved in its genesis and dissemination. The document, which was part of the efforts made by some aristocrats of Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe to promote culture and develop intellectual work in the city, is noted as the first written in the town by a native author who ventured into the field of botany. It relates 44 species of lianas and trees, while revealing the uses that were made of them in the jurisdiction. The contribution of the text to the knowledge of the phytonymy of Cuban plants, the data it provides to understand the process of naturalization and expansion in the country of two exotic invasive species, as well as the use of elements of the flora for purposes that lost importance with technological development. This paper reviews the book Verde bestiario. Microrrelatos vegetales (2023), by Rafael Ángel Herra. First, a synthesis of some of the formal, discursive and thematic elements that make up the work is presented. Then, a brief analysis of some of the micro-stories in this collection is offered to point out the kind of convergence and dialogue with the critical turn of cultural studies about plants, as well as plant thought and intelligence. Finally, it is concluded that this book contributes to a renewed interest in (fictional) literature about plants and the «botanical turn», as a response to the need for new narratives that dare to propitiate dialectical spaces and challenge «plant blindness» (Wandersee and Schussler, 1999). This critical overview allows us to defend that this book is one of the most suggestive, shocking and moving forms of nonanthropocentric textualization that aims to revalue with freshness and ingenuity the non-human/vegetable thought and sensibility, as a projection of contemporary Latin American non-mimetic literature. A new record for the Argentine adventitious flora is revealed thanks to a population of Achyranthes aspera in the Northeast of the Salta Province. The species has a wide distribution worldwide and behaves as a weed in crops. It is here morphologically described, along with its habitat, phenology, diagnostic characteristics, photographs, vernacular names, and information about its geographical distribution in Argentina and Bolivia. Mecardonia reneeae (Gratioleae, Plantaginaceae) is recorded for the first time for the Paraguayan flora, found in Humid Chaco and Upper Paraná Atlantic Forest ecoregions from the departments of Alto Paraguay, Asunción, Boquerón, Guairá and Presidente Hayes. This new record expands the species distribution area, representing its northernmost distributional site, as it was previously considered endemic only to northeastern Argentina. A short morphological description of the species, a distribution map, and a sheet of herbarium specimen photos are provided. The work was carried out with the objective of updating the weed flora associated with sugar cane in Cuba. Weed identification surveys corresponding to 2023 were carried out in all sugarcane production units in the country. Identification was carried out by walking the field along its diagonals, with the help of catalogs to the identification of the species. Families' diversity index, the relative frequency of the species at the field and the relation of interference for morfotipo they were determinated. The frequency was determined and classified into the categories of: Accidental; Uncommon; Moderately common and Very common. The surveys showed the existence of seven families, of which two belong to the class Liliatae (Monocotyledons) and five to the Magnoliatae (Dicotyledons). The Poaceae family presented the highest relative diversity index (54.2%), followed by Fabaceae and Mimosaceae with the same value (12.5%). twenty one genera were distinguished, 11 from the class Liliatae and 10 from the Magnoliatae. The most frequent were Brachiaria and Sorghum, both from the Poaceae family, with three and two meanings, respectively. The floristic inventory revealed the existence of 24 species of weeds associated with sugar cane as the most frequent at the national level, with frequency values above 1%, of which 14 belong to the class Liliatae and 10 to the Magnoliatae. Pycnophyllum macropetalum Matff. is a species originally described for the Andes of Chile which has also been collected in Bolivia and in Argentina. Presence of P. macropetalum in Argentina is based on a single sterile specimen collected in 1945. For this reason, and because P. macropetalum is morphologically very similar to P. molle, the species was excluded from the Argentinian Flora; however, recently, a population of P. macropetalum has been found in the province of Jujuy (Argentina). Therefore, the objective of this work is to describe and to illustrate this species, to provide environmental notes about the habitat where it was found, and to provide a map of the geographic distribution of the species for Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. Furthermore, based on molecular analyzes of the collected specimen, the morphological identification is corroborated, and the monophyly of the genus is confirmed. Introduction: Rafael L. Rodríguez-Caballero was a Costa Rican botanist, artist, and humanist who painted more than 1 000 orchid watercolors. Of these paintings 143 were published in 1986 and now they belong to the University of Costa Rica (UCR). Objetive: The objective of this writing was to recover and edit the information noted on the back of the orchid watercolors by Rafael Lucas Rodríguez Caballero. Methods: The present work reproduces, orders, and comments Rodríguez's jottings on the back side of 147 watercolors held by the UCR, 12 of them are here illustrated. Results: More than 20 years (1958-1980) of diverse data written by Rodríguez Caballero are here compiled. Six of the watercolors at the UCR are still unpublished. In addition, at least 30 bibliographic references cited on the watercolors back-side were identified. Conclusions: Some species of orchids that Rodríguez Caballero painted are so rare in nature that hardly anyone has seen them again. Interesting botanical and ecological studies used the multivariate approach to describe underlying patterns in large data sets and to answer questions about the structure of the studied systems at various scales. This work aims to encourage the correct use of the multivariate approach and offers guidelines for the appropriate choice of the analysis techniques according to the objectives of the study and the characteristics of the data. Some appropriate applications of principal components, multidimensional scaling, correspondence analysis, discriminant, and cluster analysis in articles published in scientific journals of these disciplines are showed. We used reduced versions of the data matrices from some of these papers to present the methods of analysis in a simple way. Between 1840 and 1855 in Mexico City six magazines for farmers were published to introduce them to botany as a useful science. The analysis of some of the articles that appeared in these magazines, from the perspective of the social history of science, points out the important role of informal education among the Mexican public as part of the modernization projects of the intellectual elite. The efforts to popularize a knowledge of botany in rural areas focused on providing the readers with scientific elements that would help them to improve agricultural yields and understand the importance of Mexican and foreign species as raw materials in demand on the international markets. Trichilia is one of the most diverse genera of the family Meliaceae, currently with five species for the argentine flora, including Trichilia pallens, which is reported for the first time. A morphological description of the species is presented as well as field pictures, its geographic distribution, habitat, phenology, vernacular names, uses, conservation status, diagnostic characters, and the first key for to the species of Trichilia in Argentina. A literary criticism of the book ''La Celestina'' by Fernando de Rojas is presented. The authors explore the use of references to nature, especially relating to zoology and botany, as an indication of the knowledge of nature portrayed through literature during the Renaissance period between 1492 and 1600 in Spain. The use of animal, plant and mineral products in the story for both health care and love remedies is discussed by the authors.

Our objective was to recognized the natural and cultural diversity of the Archaeological Complex (AC) of Narihuala, Piura region, Peru. We performed ten visits to the complex between may and june 2023. We applied specific methodologies for archaeological recognition, botanical collections and bird diversity identification, applying the transect and intensive search methods through scrubland, grassland and forest remnant in the routes of the immediate vicinity of the archaeological complex. For the determination and categorization of species, we used specialized standards and literature for each taxon evaluated. The AC of Narihuala is located near the town of Narihuala and It has architecture in mud and mud blocks belonging to the Early Intermediate Period, Late Intermediate Period, Late Horizon and it consists of eight sectors. The flora was represented by 36 species, belonging to 33 genera and 20 families. Likewise, 10 species of birds distributed in 9 families and 8 orders were registered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The investigation was carried out in Topes de Collantes with the objective of evaluating two methods of “vernalization" of Allium cepa L. var., Caribe 71 in natural conditions. Two groups of bulblets (from the previous harvest) were selected and subjected to methods different vernalization, the conventional (storage in cold storage at temperatures between 2 and 3 0C, for 100 days) and natural (storage during 125 days within a rustic house with walls of palm board and a thatched roof, at room temperature). The bulblets from both treatments were planted randomly in different field plots. During the development of the plantation were evaluated, agronomic variables related to seed production and the yield of onion bulbs. The conventional method was statistically superior to natural, on the seed production; although the natural method was superior in the commercial yield of the onion bulbs. It is concluded that can be used method of natural vernalization in the climatic conditions of Topes de Collantes , because the seeds production are lower than the conventional vernalization, but higher yields of commercial onion bulbs are obtained, and is an economical method accessible to the producers. In this article we study the counties of Vinalopó included by Cavanilles in the fourth book of his work Observaciones sobre la historia natural, geografia, agricultura, población y frutos del Reyno de Valencia. The pages dedicated to the Vinalopó show the general themes of the work: relief, valleys and mountains, minerals, vegetation, inhabitants, diseases, agricultural area, crops, livestock, hydraulic structures.... From the descriptive writing of the Observaciones we will try to find out the meanings, ideas and illustrated concepts of Cavanilles. First, we review the empiricist method of observing, measuring and classifying that the Valencian botanist applies to the geographical and hydrological context, secondly, we study the agrarian point of view of the abate economy, which we cannot describe as physiocrat. For the Valencian Enlightenment, agricultural and manufacturing productions must allow the maintenance of the populations and, consequently, their happiness. Human labour applied to agrarian transformations --mainly irrigation--, proto-industry and non-monopolistic trade allows the progress and wealth of villages. The discourse of the Valencian botanist allows us to reflect on the notions and practices of the Spanish Enlightened authors who never exceeded the threshold of Bourbon despotism. Considering the progress of the Flora Vascular de la República Argentina project, we introduce the first interactive, multi-access key to the angiosperm families of the Argentinian Flora. The key is an open resource, built under Lucid ™ software, and available through the Flora Argentina site (https://clave.floraargentina.edu.ar/), with an on-line form for the user's suggestions. We explain the advantages of multi-access keys versus dichotomous keys, briefly describe how the key was built, and how Lucid tools can be applied (Spanish version) for a better use of the key. The irupé or water corn (Victoria cruziana A. D. Orb.) belongs to the Nymphaeaceae family and arouses interest mainly due to the beauty of its leaves and flowers. Obtaining seeds of this aquatic species in its natural environment is challenging, and it is also considered a recalcitrant species for in vitro culture. For this reason, the aim of this work was to establish a methodology for the conversion into plants of irupé embryos extracted from seeds of immature fruits and to obtain material to be used in micropropagation or in environmental restoration programs. Embryo culture of fruits in six growth stages was carried out up to a maximum of four weeks. Using Murashige & Skoog's basal medium, twelve culture media with and without the addition of growth regulators (gibberellic acid, AG3 and thidiazuron, TDZ) were tested. Embryos converted into plants in all media diluted to 50% (½ MS) with 3% sucrose, while plants with developed roots were obtained in the medium with the addition of 10 mg/L of GA3. Although the culture of embryos derived from seeds in early fruit stages did not allow plant regeneration, this was possible when explants derived from fruits in late developmental stages. We present the first document on Asteraceae cultivated in Peru, with 53 species in 37 genera. 44 species are introduced from Asia, Mesoamerica, Europe, Africa and Australia, and only nine are native to South America. Serbal (2019) is an unpublished collection of poems by Leonce Lupette (Göttingen, 1986), a French-German writer, poet and translator who has lived in Argentina for several years. In this collection of poems, structured alphabetically as a sort of encyclopedia or incomplete notes, the explorer-botanist-poet proposes an expanded way of seeing and inhabiting reality, exploring ways to describe reality and expressing oneself in a playful exercise of blurring the borders between names and languages. The poems are written in Spanish, but also in German, French, English, Portuguese, Portunhol, among other languages and dialects, and they compel us to look at the world and to inhabit it from the small differences and to build what we could call "inessential communities", paraphrasing Agamben (1996). Eleocharis acutangula (Roxb.) Schult., subsp. breviseta J. D. Rosen is cited for the first time for the flora of Argentina. This study provides a brief morphological description and identification key with E. acutangula (Roxb.) Galianthe valerianoides (Spermacoceae-Rubiaceae) is recorded for the first for the Uruguayan flora (Dpto. Rivera), and as a consequence, its distribution area extends to its southernmost limit. A detailed morphological description, a distribution map in Uruguay, and photographs of the habitat are given for G. valerianoides. Various chorological notes for the genus Carex in the Iberian Peninsula are presented, including new provincial records for four species (C. elata subsp. elata, C. demissa subsp. demissa, C. oedipostyla, C. sylvatica subsp. sylvatica), as well as provincial confirmations (not indicated in Flora iberica) for the presence of three taxa. We also provide the second national report for Portugal of C. reuteriana subsp. mauritanica. Three additional reports have chorological interest by constituting new regional and/or biogeographic records, or the second provincial report. Five of the novelties are of conservation concern because they imply endangered species or populations, included in Red Lists and/or legally protected. Objective. Characterize the avifauna present in the Ekonukos agroecological farm of the Minuto de Dios University Corporation, generating base information for the description and development of future models of avitourism, environmental education and conservation actions in the study area. Materials and methods. Four zones were defined according to their vegetation cover or land use (Building or habitable zone-ZE, Secondary forest BS, ZC cultivation zone and Grasslands or open zone-Pza). In each zone an observation point with a fixed radius was established and observations were made. Additionally, tours were made using linear transects. The registered species were identified and categorized by habitat type (ZE, BS, ZC or Pza), diet, frequency of records, and threat or conservation status. Results. 84 species of birds were found, distributed in 18 orders, 34 families and 74 genera. The order Passeriformes presented the highest species richness, as did the families Tyrannidae and Thraupidae. Of the total species, 79 correspond to resident populations, four to boreal migratory and one southern migratory. On the other hand, regarding the threatened status, the farinosa Amazon species was found to be in the NT or almost threatened category. Conclusions.
