Indexación: Scopus. Chile is a landmark case in opening up higher education to the free market and in the reformulation of the logics that regulate scientific production in universities. This translates into a management system for academic staff oriented by productivity bonuses associated with high-impact publications, by the distribution of research funds conditional on the productivity of researchers and by the rank of academic tasks. In this article, we present the results of a study that sought to explore and understand how highly productive social science academics describe scientific writing from everyday labor practice framed in new regulations of scientific production. Through the analysis of 20 interviews, we propose 3 categories: affectivity, fragility and strategy. These give an account of everyday aspects, as well as tensions and conflicts present in the process of scientific writing. https://atheneadigital.net/article/view/v20-1-fardela-carriel-lazcano-et-al

The configuration of authorship can be a source of tension, for example, when someone who generated a certain type of information or content is excluded from the list of authors of a work, or also, when someone is incorporated as author in a manner of return of courtesies, although they contributed nothing to the said content. As researchers and editors of the Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica, based on our experience and comments received from colleagues during research activities, we understand that it is necessary to contribute elements of reflection on this topic. The objectives of this work are to a) make visible the problems regarding the recognition of authorship in publications, and b) provide some guidelines to guarantee respect for copyright., Asociación de Antropología Biológica de la República Argentina

[EN] As opposed to other disciplines, whose students have been writing dissertations for years, students of the Humanities in Spain were only required to prepare dissertations a few years ago due to the introduction of the Bologna Plan. With the aim of sharing and discussing our own experience with other experts, the results from our own positive experience with systematic literature reviews conducted by students of the degree on English Studies will be presented. By carrying out such reviews, students do not only acquire important knowledge, but they are also able to familiarise themselves with search engines, which have proved to be essential tools when conducting grounded academic projects. Among others, some key aspects of tutoring these projects were guiding students to identify relevant topics, finding a coherent structure drawing from the hypotheses, using the right methodology that will allow the testing of the hypotheses, and presenting the results according to the principles of open science so that other researchers can access them in order to improve their dissemination., [ES] A diferencia de otras áreas, que cuentan con una larga tradición en la realización de TFGs, en España las áreas de Humanidades empezaron hace solo unos años, a raíz de la adaptación al plan Bolonia, a incluir en sus titulaciones la realización obligatoria de TFGs.

One of the expectations in Science Education nowadays is to teach people how to solve problems, to develop high-level intellectual skills at the same time that specific knowledge is acquired. In common practice of Physics Education, this objective is usually limited to solving “paper and pencil” problems appearing at the end of each book chapter. However, the widespread failure of students in this activity forces us to question if, indeed, we are teaching them how to solve problems. An analysis of both textbooks and teachers’ practices shows that students are not taught how to solve problems but, instead, ready-made solutions are just explained to the students. This procedure transmits serious deficiencies both in attitudinal and methodological terms, which makes it very difficult for them to tackle new problems.

The issue of the energy transition, that can be defined as the transition from the use of fossil fuels (in particular coal) to low-carbon energy resources (such as wind, solar and natural gas), is assuming an increasingly central importance in the public debateand has increasingly become the focus of public concern. Scientifically speaking, the challenge and goal of achieving pursuing a more sustainable and fairer low-carbon energy sector globally has encouraged the proliferation of a series of scientific contributions, in various fields of knowledge. The paper shows the results of a literature review on the topic of energy transition. The review takes into consideration a selection of papers taken from international scientific journals with the aim of mapping at a broader level the research on the topic and the issues that were mainly addressed in the years between 2015 and 2020. With the more specific aim of understanding the role of sociology in the international scientific debate on the energy transition, the paper aims to provide an overview of 1) research fields and disciplines; 2) places of publication; 3) research topics and questions.

Hikikomori is a condition of severe social withdrawal in which people shut themselves off from society and stay alone in their homes/rooms for at least six months. The first part of this paper reports on how Hikikomori has been widely conceptualized as a clinical (i.e., psychiatric or psychological) condition. From this point of view, temperament, emotional or familiar factors have been often proposed to explain Hikikomori. The second part of this paper focuses on the thesis that Hikikomori mainly depends on historical-cultural circumstances that have prevailed in the Japanese context, and suggests that it may be best conceptualized as a form of social protest (instead of as a psychopathological condition).

Adopting Latour’s 'Actor Network Theory’, This paper aims to highlight the Sociological Turn of translation studies and approach translation practice as a social action. Accordingly, the process of translating is tackled from a creative perspective. We attempt to illustrate that translation is no longer a word for word substitution; however, it is a cultural product that aims at reproduction of meaning. Furthermore, translation is more than a matter of linguistic realization and language comparison, and is incorporated in the social and cultural context. The present paper explores not only the influence of the individual translation agent, but also the impact of these agents working together as a network in translation production with a particular insight into the huge movement of translation which had been funded and supported during the Abbasid Era(Golden Age), we attempt to explore how translators interact with other actors and actants to produce knowledge. It has been concluded that translation actors and their individual social impact can be infuential upon the ultimate translation product. Consequently, the translator is not merely a technician who authomatically transfers the meaning of a text from one language into another one. Instead, he is an agent of change and transformation.

The following paper aims to contribute to the Italian literature on non-monogamy with a psychosocial interpretation towards the future of the political and legal recognition requests of non-monogamous and queer relationships, as well as of their families. Starting with a reflection on how normativities position those who are outside the binaries as noises to be ignored or cancelled, the paper then provides a critique of the concept of evaluation as a tool for acquiring rights (as it does not find a counterpart in the different-gender relationships). Psychosocial studies on the relationship quality of non-monogamous people should be used to strenghten the demands for the legal recognitions of non-monogamous relationships, families and multi-parenting. In fact, the available international literature has given voice and confirmed what the many polyfamilies experience in everyday life: that these families (non-monogamous, open, poly, extended, childless * or not) are a social reality with their positive charachteristics and criticalities. Starting from examples on the erasure of bisexualities and ame-gender families recognition – the paper discuss how including these types of psychosocial research can improve our struggle for the recognition and legal rights of non-monogamous agreements and relationships.

15. François Dépelteau and the generation of a relational intellectual community

François Dépelteau is a major figure in the contemporary rise of relational scholarship. His untimely passing casts a shadow over the relational research community, particularly those with close ties to the Canadian sociological association research cluster. This paper seeks to honour the contribution and legacy of François through a relational analysis of a relational research community. Mobilising Eacott’s relational approach, this paper turns relational scholarship upon itself to argue that the relational research community is organised around two fundamental questions – the explanatory and the empirical. François was not only embedded in, but embodied, this relationality. His approach to scholarship serves as an invitation, an invitation to think with, through and where necessary against relations in the pursuit of offering generative insights. François generated the conditions for many previously disparate researchers to come together and the challenge has now shifted to us – the relational research community – to honour him and continue this research agenda.

- Abstract
This paper analyzes the main features of the urban reforms by Benjamin Vicuña Mackenna in Santiago de Chile between 1872 and 1875. We pay special attention to the origin of the objectives of modernization, closely related to the political agenda of Latin American elites to create an urban culture (civilization). We also analyze the strategies of social defence that these reforms implied. The influence of French positivism and the Haussmann project in Paris was very important in the Vicuña Mackenna project and its model of a segregated city: the "European city" itself,--bourgeois, civilized and hygienic--, which should be protected, and the 'African township",--lower-class feral and unhygienic--, whose population must be regenerated and colonized.

- Abstract
This paper analyzes the symbolic conformation of Rome and Romanism as important factors in the affirmation of the power of fascism, especially after the proclamation of the Empire in 1936. Within this framework, it explores the role of science in legitimizing the direct correlation of this symbolic universe with a praxis that exalted racial superiority inherited from Ancient Rome. It investigates the links between the eugenic discourse and the exercise of power behind the "biology policy", including fascist organicism and racism. In fact, Rome was the essence of an empire that was reborn after fifteen centuries and, between its historical legacy and the new scenarios created by fascism for disciplining the population, Romanism had to condense all of the merits of the race, encouraging military conquests and promoting responsibility for maintaining racial purity and avoiding "unwanted miscegenation" with conquered peoples. The idea of Romanism also encouraged a continuation of the persecution of Jews started in Germany. Hence, science ratified a widespread idea of the Romanization as a crusade to impose a force, exaggerated on racial grounds, which integrated confidence in environmental factors with a crude biological determinism.

- Abstract
Objective: To identify validated information available on the relationship between social capital (SC) and health in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC)., Methods: A systematic search for papers published from January 1990-June 2007 was conducted on the Medline, SciELO, LILACS, and the Cochrane Library databases. All of the research and review articles published by scientific journals that evaluated CS and its relationship to health in LAC were included in the analysis., Results: Fifteen articles were found (11 original research and 4 reviews). The health topics examined by the research articles were: (a) mortality and life expectancy, (b) mental health, (c) injuries, (d) nutritional status, and (e) immunization. The validity of these works, the results, and the principal conclusions were analyzed in depth., Conclusions: Despite limitations inherent to the CS concept and the studies identified, it was confirmed that scientific evidence exists to support the possible association between CS and health in LAC. CS could play a protective role in certain health areas, such as injury prevention and mental health; not withstanding, the relationship between CS and health could vary according to CS subtype and socioeconomic context and culture. It is therefore imperative to continue social epidemiology research that thoroughly investigates the relationship between social determinants and specific aspects of health in LAC context.

A critical social theory for what and whom? This question is the key for this paper in order to problematize relationships and the dependence relating sociological theory, political praxis and strong institutionalism. The paper’s central argument is that the Western sociological tradition in the 20th century assumed a systemic understanding of society as epistemological-political basis of its constitution, legitimation and political influence, which led to strong institutionalism, that is, the correlation and self-justification between social sciences and political institutions, so that scientifical-political institutions become overlapped in relation to political praxis of social movements, as neutral and impartial regarding class struggle, depoliticizing social systems’ constitution, legitimation and evolution. The paper’s second central argument is that a critical social theory for the constitution and crisis of contemporary Western modernization must abandon the defense of and connection with strong institutionalism, supporting social movements in their epistemological-political criticism to social systems’ technicization and autonomization.

This paper offers a descriptive and critical overview of the experience of the presence of women at university in Spain and several countries in Latin America. It focuses not just on how they embarked on different degrees, but also on the extent to which they went on to exercise professionally and the social barriers encountered at each step. It describes some of the strategies used on the paths followed to study at university during almost one hundred and fifty years, and the achievements made possible by this education, both inside and outside the academic setting. The paper draws on primary documentary sources from university archives and newspaper libraries and includes a review of the literature on the subject. These documentary searches provided us with a great deal of valuable information that has helped us in our task. The indicators of the subject matter studied are, amongst others, university education, female lecturers, history and sociology, female students and life aspirations.

This paper aims to discuss the relationship between society, State and social deviance, from a sociological point of view. In this sense, the focus is on some perspectives of the three ‘founding fathers of sociology’ (Durkheim, Marx and Weber). It is inferred that the foundational contributions of sociology are not enough to deal with social deviance. Therefore, the paper develops an approach highlighting Georg Simmel’s interactionist perspective and presents Howard Becker’s sociology of deviance (labelling approach) as an alternative to scrutinise the relation between society, State and social deviance.

This paper argues for a closer association between economics and sociology. The latter could benefit from the intellectual rigour of the former. Building a unified socio-economics requires an intellectual rapprochement between the sociologist conception of social interaction and a relaxed version of rational choice. - Abstract
Background: Social participation in the health system constitutes one of the basic principles of Brazilian health sector reform. This paper analyses the concepts held by different groups of stakeholders with respect to social participation in health and identifies their opinions on hindering and enabling factors for this participation., Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using individual interviews (II) and focus groups (FG) with different groups of stakeholders: 135 users (II, GF), 14 community leaders (II, GF), 12 Municipal Health Council (MHC) members (II), 8 policymakers and (II) 37 health personnel (II, GF) were interviewed. A narrative content analysis of the results was conducted. Two municipalities in North-eastern Brazil, Cabo de Santo Agostinho and Camaragibe, made up the area of study., Results: In all groups, a distinction between individual and group participation emerged and reached different levels of elaboration. Many informants' ideas described also their own ways of action. Individual participation concepts and the utilization of health services were predominant among users. Population and institutional factors were identified as obstacles to participation: users and community leaders referred both type of factors, while the health personnel and MHC members put more emphasis on the former. Some informants among the health personnel did not identify any barriers. Policymakers emphasised the lack of political will. The enabling factors mentioned reflected the same logic., Conclusions: Concepts and perceived hindering factors to participation which were described appear to show different ways of interaction among the diverse stakeholders and the health services. The objective of this paper is to present measurements of the misery index for a group of 18 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean for the period 1970-2021. In particular, the values of the so-called Okun misery index are obtained from the sum of the inflation and unemployment rates. In addition, variants have been proposed that take into account informality, the monetary policy rate, and the GDP growth rate, as well as its discounted value for inequality. The paper discusses the relevance of inflation and the unemployment rate in the conformation of the indicator, evidencing that, depending on the study period, the prevalence of inflation is identified as the most relevant variable to make visible the degree of discomfort of the population of Latin American economies. It is also pointed out that the unemployment rate underestimates the loss of economic efficiency of society, taking into account that, historically, most of the economies in the region have reported low levels of unemployment, which coexists with the widespread presence of informality in most labor markets in the region. In this context, a variant of the Okun misery index is proposed that, in addition to taking into account the unemployment and inflation records, includes the percentage of workers in informal occupations in the calculation of the indicator. A modification to the Barro misery index is also proposed, suggesting that, instead of subtracting the inter-annual growth rate from the Okun misery index, said growth rate discounted for inequality is reduced, assuming that inequality in income distribution it remains one of the most pressing structural problems of Latin American societies.

Naples has a rich and suggestive artistic, historical and cultural heritage. This characterization makes it one of the most attractive Italian tourist cities. Starting from 2018, the IT.A.CÀ Festival has also been included for two years in the already dense calendar of tourist events of the regional capital of Campania. It is one of the major Italian Festivals aimed at promoting responsible tourism and enhancing local realities. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of an action-research conducted by OUT (University of Naples' Research Center on Tourism) aimed at analyzing the impacts that the Festival has had on Naples. The study involved the main representatives of associations, institutions and local bodies that organized the past Neapolitan editions of IT.A.CÀ. More specifically, using the SWOT analysis tool, the research identified the strengths and opportunities associated with the event, but also the weaknesses and threats, to individuate a number of recommendations for its realization in Naples.

Abstract Introduction This paper analyzes university and the social and productive environment links in Argentina. Objective The purpose of the paper is to contribute to the reflection on university institutions and their participation in the «knowledge society», and to generate some ideas about interactive processes between university actors and productive, governmental, and civil society actors, with the aim of outline an inclusive conceptual framework of the various practices that are part of this phenomenon. Method Given the reflective nature of the article, the methodology used is the conceptual critical review of a corpus of works and approaches that has analyzed the relationship between the university and socio-productive environments and a systematization of the different theoretical approaches on the «environment» concept. Results The ideal modeling that underlies many studies conceived to account for interactive dynamics between universities and the environment in countries with greater scientific development do not allow us to fully grasp the logic of technological linkage or university extension activities in local contexts, nor the characteristics of the territorial, productive, and political-cultural environments that contain the interactive processes of our universities with non-academic actors. Conclusions As a conclusion, this paper suggests some guidelines to accompany the design of university policies to link with the socio-productive environment that are more effective and appropriate to the socio-techno-territorial areas in which they take place.

This paper describes movements of collective research carried out in a discipline developed in post-graduate programs in Education (PPGEC; PPGEA; PPGEDU) at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande – FURG, located in Rio Grande, RS, Brazil. It focuses on the exercise that refers to the methodology called Discursive Textual Analysis, based on a corpus that consisted of abstracts of dissertations defended in the post-graduate program in Environmental Education at FURG from 2014 to 2018. This paper aims at introducing description as a phenomenological, attitude and at showing how to make an analytical movement based on the eidethical reduction of a category. The question that guided the study was: Which is this Environmental Education that shows itself in abstracts of dissertations of the post-graduate program in Environmental Education (PPGEA)? From the descending movement of abstract description to the movement towards the concept of problematization – one of the categories that emerged from the analytical process –, an ascending movement was carried out. It enabled interpretation and dialogue with theoreticians in different epistemologies that address “problematization” in distinct senses.

This article first presents reflections on the joint work carried out by Michael Cernea and this paper's author over 8-9 years for gaining "room, recognition and resources" within the CGIAR for sociological and socio-anthropological research on farmers, their practices and needs. The status of social research inside the CGIAR has gone through ups and downs in the uphill battle for expanding social research within this organization. Social scientists have constantly worked to feed their findings into the Centers' biophysical research. The paper documents the contribution of Michael Cernea, the first sociologist who acceded to CGIAR's top science and policy bodies, to strengthening the presence and influence of sociological and anthropological knowledge within CGIAR's institutional architecture and scientific products. The second part of this study presents the high promise of Conservation Agriculture (CA) - a new paradigm for non-tillage agricultural production that offers improved productivity and environmental protection. CA principles are universally applicable. The author offers global data on the impressive advances and distribution of CA, which covers already some 125 million ha distributed across all continents and agro-ecologies. CA is a farmer-driven socio-cultural phenomenon which has expanded at a yearly rate of 7 mil. ha during the past decade.

This paper is divided in three parts. First of all, it explores the theoretical frame needed for the analysis of the main question: the representation of difference within ethnic relations. The second part stresses the importance of this question for the development of intercultural education and particularly for a more precise account of the way in which teachers build that difference. The third part reports the findings of a study of teachers discourse on their gypsies and second-generation immigrants pupils. It is suggested that their perception of ethnic difference is tied to the building of their own identity and to processes of hierarchical categorization which have to be understood in relation with the power of the dominant group to classify the others along a scale of cultural distance.

It is our goal, in historical research, to understand societies, how those were organized and administered themselves. We believe, as we want to make clear in the lines of this paper, that the economy is the most social expression of a society and, therefore, the analysis of a given economy is the most appropriate way to approach to its knowledge. In this paper we disentangle what economy is, abandoning old ideas and guiding us by the current economic science; in addition to outline at the same time some of the questions and thoughts that we need to ponder to understand the economic system of the societies being studied.

Although political ideology is a core concept for contemporary political psychology, divergences persist in the literature regarding its structure and operationalization. This paper assesses the psychometric properties of the Escala de Ideología Política [Political Ideology Scale] operationally, that is, considering people’s positioning regarding different political issues. For this purpose, a probability sample was taken from the population of Córdoba, Argentina (N = 444) and the psychometric properties of this scale were tested by applying Item Response Theory. A two-dimensional structure with two independent axes-Conservatism and Progressivism-was found, each with interval properties and satisfactory model fit. Furthermore, political ideology was correlated with social values, in a way that is consistent with the previous empirical evidence. This provides evidence of predictive validity. In sum, although the psychometric properties of the Political Ideology Scale will be further studied, this paper represents a significant contribution, due to the scarcity of ecologically valid instruments of operational ideology. Abstract The paper to present addresses some theoretical concepts of pragmatism and semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce, in relation to the sign, the relationships established between signs and their projection to the Strategic Planning Advertising - Planning. Based on these theoretical elements, a semiotic model of strategic planning is proposed, resulting from the research project: "Semiotics, planning and advertising strategy, Pragmatism projections to contemporary communication" funded by the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University and executed in 2014-2015 . The question that guides the presentation is: Which elements of Pragmatism and Peircean semiotics can be projected to a strategic planning model in advertising? For the development of the paper work three fundamental arguments of pragmatism, known as phenomenological categories, which are related to the sensations, actions and thoughts that arise in the human mind. They are related between the feelings of the people, the actions they do and the thought of those actions and that in the advertising exercise are associated with the sensations that the consumers have against the products or brands, the purchase actions and the filiation processes with brands (strategic branding). This sequential approach allows proposing a strategic advertising planning methodology tied to measurable and efficient results. The model of Strategic Planning Advertising - Planning, was used with great success in 4 cases EFFIE College 2016 in Colombia. EnglishThis article proposes a dialogue between social work and feminist studies in the knowledge construction process, through the introduction of intersectionality as one of the ways to examine the range of differences that are encountered in daily professional practice. The study discusses the reductionism of the Marxist approach present in publications on this topic in Brazil and argues that the category of “gender” is a key element to understand and explain the status of the profession. The paper presents the three main trends in feminist epistemology: standpoint theory, feminist empiricism, and postmodern feminism. The distinctions among these trends arise out of how they establish relationships between women and science. The paper also emphasises the epistemological value accorded to the “experience” category for women and affirms the importance of reflecting on the dialectical relationship between the epistemological and the empirical, arguing that knowledge is fed by practice. The study concludes that “social work from a feminist perspective” will facilitate greater commitment on the part of professionals in intervention processes. This paper offers a pragmatic analysis of quarrels in Roman Tragedy. Its aim is to study this kind of conflictual interactions from a pragmatic perspective, and to compare tragic quarrels with quarrels in Roman Comedy and Novel, object of a previous study. The theoretical approach situated in the realm of im/politeness theories allows to describe the linguistic forms used in quarrels, and provides a coherent framework to study impoliteness in Latin, delineating patterns of behaviour through different literary genres across a wide time span. In this paper the limits of critical lexicography are presented and defined as a recent discipline that is part of the field of meta-lexicographical studies. This paper falls squarely in the general framework of ethno- lexicography (Fillmore 1994; Pérez 1997, 2000, 2005; Calero Vaquera 2010) and seeks to stake out its own space within linguistic research and highlight its importance within the field of critical discourse studies. It also addresses the discipline’s principles, basic areas of inquiry and analytical codes.

This paper reconstructs the development of the status of the theory of legal pluralism: while originally the term has been used as descriptive label referring to a situation observed in the world, nowadays a more sophisticated understanding of the role of the concept is needed. The epistemology of social sciences can help us make sense of the multifarious literature on legal pluralism, and of the different conceptions of the term that have been proposed. More specifically, legal pluralism is here devised as a theoretical programme and its influence on the production of social-scientific knowledge is analysed. The investigation concentrates on the role of the concept in the selection of relevant data and on the intelligibility structure imposed on them. Given the importance of novel formations in science and speculative fiction, the aim of this paper is to analyse a selection of morphosemantic and semantic neologisms that occur in the feminist dystopia The Handmaid’s Tale (1985), namely those items more closely connected with women’s lives. These items are gathered, classified and discussed by resorting to the tools provided by Morphology, Lexical Semantics, Onomastics and Women’s Studies. Therefore, the paper explores how new names for people (Econowives, Offred), activities (Particicution), artifacts (Birthmobile) and places (the Colonies) play a part in the linguistic task of female subjugation. It shows how in a fictional republic where gender roles and religious totalitarianism are taken to extremes, the forms and meanings of words are manipulated to enhance power relations and gender inequality, impose an orthodox frame of mind (comply with the system), and avoid uncomfortable truths. Neologisms provide a sense of authenticity in the narrative and show how language evolves to satisfy various needs, not only pragmatic, but also social, ideological and euphemistic. This paper presents a proposal for incorporating educational robotics into primary and secondary education to support the Ministry of National Education’s general guidelines for technology education in Colombia from various national and interna-tional approaches. The research is carried out with a mixed-method and divided into the documentary, descriptive, analytical, and projective phases. The paper contains three sections: a conceptual review of educational robotics; its importance, based on scientific literature and applied programs internationally and nationally; and fina-lly, the treatment of robotics from different knowledge approaches, perspectives, and dimensions. We noted a growing tendency to introduce robotics education in private and public schools, focused on the “use of free time.” Therefore, we propose desig-ning a spiral curricular model with four complexity levels relevant to the principles of meaningful and inclusive learning, per the current needs for and cutting-edge knowledge of science and technology education.

The paper reflects upon the use of history within a genealogy of the present. To do this, it is organized into three sections. In the first place, we propose some considerations on the ways in which this perspective understands temporality; Secondly, taking up some questions related to the issue of "translation" and "circulation", we look into the ways in which it deals with the spatial dimension; finally, the paper elaborates on the history of the present as a form of criticism and its validation criteria. Throughout the text, and in order to illustrate or clarify some conceptual aspects, we present examples from previous investigations that, inspired by the history of the present, studied the problem of poverty in the expert discourse, on the one hand, and of the racial question in the Argentine sociological discourse, on the other., Dossier: Usos de la Historia para investigar problemas sociales, Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación

This paper has two objectives. The first is to reflect on the meaning of suicide as a sociological issue, commenting on an article by E.D. Nunes (1988) on the famous work by Durkheim. The second is to discuss the same issue within the field of public health, analyzing the contributions by the father of sociology and approaches by the fields of epidemiology, psychology, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis, highlighting the work of Brazilian authors. The paper presents information on the Brazilian epidemiological context and concludes by demonstrating that only from an analytical point of view can violent causes as a whole can be studied separately. Thus, they constantly require epistemological and epidemiological surveillance to construct indicators capable of contributing to change. This is all the more true because data on current violence need to be viewed within the context of the social crisis and changes Brazil is undergoing.

This paper presents a detailed review of Suicide, the sociological classic by Durkheim, 100 years after it was first published. The first part of the article focuses on the author's interest in the theme, within the scope of concerns on the importance of studying suicide dating from the 18th century. The article then presents a circumstantial review of the various chapters, preceded by brief remarks on the book's place within Durkheim's work as a whole. The third part of the article comments on the book with reference to the main authors that have studied it. Amongst other qualities, the book's importance lies in the fact that it associates an elaborate theoretical construction with the empirical data, working within the possibilities provided by late 19th-century moral statistics. The article stresses Durkheim's perspective of dealing with the impact of the macrostructures over micro-level phenomena. The distribution of suicides is also reviewed, updating information and the relationship between suicides and professional groups, for example. The paper also provides a critique of authors who stress the importance of "meanings" in the analysis of suicides, with some notes on the relationship between suicide and mental disease.

What do cultural networks tell us about regional agendas? This document is part of a broader investigation into the productive networks of cultural exchange – specifically in the field of theater – between Mexico City and Quebec during the NAFTA/TLCAN/ALENA years (1994-2018). The paper explores the role that the work of imagining communities plays in regionalization processes, observing how this imaginative labor renders political agendas concrete, at the same time that it invisiblizes other forms of contact and cultural tensions within the region. The first section exposes the ambiguities and arbitrariness of geographic demarcations and of imaginative practices that transform space into a shared imagined place, be it city, nation or region. It presents a brief overview of the conceptual history of Latin America as necessary context in understanding the role that NAFTA played during the nineties in producing North America as an imagined region. The second section is a descriptive overview, without being exhaustive, of the primary networks of exchange between Mexico City and Quebec, specifically in the circulation of theater texts, artists, productions and translations generated during the twenty-five years of NAFTA. In the face of these maps of exchange, the paper asks: what does the relationship between idea and material infrastructure reveal about the role of cultural production in the political and economic inner-workings of a region? More specifically, what may be discerned from the analysis of Mexico and Quebec‟s theatre networks, of their political, economic and ideational intentions and strategies as regional actors?

Abstract This paper analyses Um copo de cólera (1978), by Raduan Nassar, and Estorvo (1991), by Chico Buarque, aiming to observe the possible relationship between Romanesque form and political conflicts of the last quarter of the 20th century in Brazil. The paper hypothesizes that the elements recalled in the books literarily reach a deadlock which refers to an external context, gaining, in that movement, an esthetical perception of the period. Therefore, it is a dialectic reading attempt, in the same way proposed by Antonio Candido and Robert Schwartz, in which one tries to approximate the social form to the literary one, aiming at establishing perspectives of understanding, as much for one as for the other. As a result, the analysis suggests a process of disorientation in the quest for social transformation.
