Journals are the most important vehicles for sharing research results. Some countries (such as Brazil, Chile and Portugal) are underrepresented in terms of originating papers published in top Information Systems journals. This theoretical paper aims to provide a roadmap signposting the key elements for a paper to meet the criteria for publication in the top Information Systems journals. Ten dimensions for critically reviewing Information Systems papers were identified in the literature. Considering the importance of having a paper published in a top journal, for both the author and for the institution to which he is affiliated, this paper might be used by researchers wishing to submit papers to top journals, as well as by editors and reviewers who might benefit by reflecting on the standards adopted in peer review systems.

The need of increasing production creates high investment demands. However, the pressure towards low costs requires new investments in technologies, generally associated to process and product, cause the development of large corporations that are vulnerable to market and have low capability of affecting it. In order to understand such market dynamics and the factors determining its competitiveness, we should analyze how to aggregate value to this type of industry. The present study aims at analyzing the factors determining the international competitiveness of the printing and writing paper segment through an analysis comparing the Brazilian and international companies production chain. Preliminary, it was inferred that the main difference is set in the product distribution internationalization process that permits to innovate and participate in new market. Such internationalization process also allows the creation of new organization forms through cooperation within the production chain. The Brazilian companies should be more concerned about the way they are organized and sales of their products than about processes and products; they should be linked to an internationalization project which effectively provides the other country’s final consumer a guarantee that the Brazilian product has an aggregated value.RESUMENLa industria de papel y celulosa convive con cuestiones de adecuación de oferta y demanda que influyen en la toma de decisión en varias etapas de la cadena productiva. The supply and use of information technology have changed the profile of individuals worldwide. The analysis of the profile of Brazilian citizens indicates that the supply of information technology and the profile of the population changed in recent decades, separately or together. By obtaining an index such as, education, access to mobile telephony and computers with internet access, we can perceive changes in the habits of Brazil in recent years. With the increasing technological advances such as the emergence of tablet-PCs, e-paper, smartphones, digital cameras, among others, there is a growing expectation of a decrease in paper consumption. On the other hand, greater access to information - with internet available in several locations at low cost - and technologies such as printers increasingly affordable prices, tends to increase the volume of impressions, as well as the consumption of equipment increases the consumption of packaging based on paper. This study drew statistical studies between the increased use of information technology and paper consumption in the Brazilian market, using data for twenty years - from 1990 to 2009 - Bracelpa (Associação Brasileira de Celulose e Papel) and the Annual Survey of Management Resources for Informatics at the Fundação Getúlio Vargas – Escola de Administração do Estado de São Paulo (FGV-EAESP). Through the literature review on the topic and statistical tests, it was investigated whether corporate investments in information technology provided to reduce the consumption of certain types of papers in Brazilian marketplace. To answer the hypotheses, we performed a correlation between the development of paper consumption, according to the types (newsprint, printing and writing), and investments in information technology, according to the sectors (services, industry and trade). The results corroborate the earlier study, developed by Moraes Meirelles and Nacimiento (2010), which was analyzed in a period of six years, indicating that the use of IT did not bring benefit to the reduction of paper consumption in the Brazilian market, considering the types of roles impacted by this use. It is evident through this study that the values of IT investments by companies participating in this research had positive correlation with the fall in consumption of newsprint and writing paper type, indicating that, possibly, access to digital information through reduced the use of newspapers for circulation of news. It is also evident in the increased consumption of other types of paper such as newsprint and packaging, consumption increased along with IT investments, thus we can deduce that the easy access to computer equipment, including printers would lead to the printing of electronic files, unnecessarily, as well as increased sales of electronic equipment tends to increase the use of paper packaging.

This work addresses the history of Pan-Americanism focusing on a particular case: the commercial activities and the advertising discourse of the American company called the National Paper and Type Co. This company monopolized the exports market for printing machinery and products mainly paper and ink manufactured in the United States for distribution throughout Latin America. It was the main supplier of the raw materials with which the most prominent newspapers in the region were printed. While dominating this market, this company built the scaffolding structure of the public sphere. Was an active disseminator of the Pan-American discourse that took the opportunity to secure customers, promote a business culture in Latin America typical of Anglo-Saxon society and promoted a mentality that encouraged consumption. The kind of Pan-Americanism that manipulated this company promoted a very important discourse prone to the appreciation of Latin America and strengthened the links proposed by that utopia of proximity that imagined a united Pan-America. This commercial and cultural intermediary built a communication bridge that would contribute to the strengthening of a transnational public sphere. A high proportion of people who have suffered from COVID-19 report, after recovery from the acute phase of the disease, clinical manifestations, both subjective and objective, that continue beyond 3 weeks or even 3 months after the original clinical disease. There is still no agreed nomenclature to refer to this condition, but perhaps the most commonly used is post-COVID syndrome. The Scientific Committee on COVID of the Madrid College of Physicians (ICOMEM) has discussed this problem with a multidisciplinary approach in which internists, infectious disease specialists, psychiatrists, pneumologists, surgeons, geriatricians, pediatricians, microbiologists, family physicians and other specialists have participated, trying to gather the existing information and discussing it in the group. The clinical manifestations are very variable and range from simple fatigue to persistent fibrosing lung lesions with objective alterations of pulmonary function. Post-COVID syndrome seems to be particularly frequent and severe in adults who have required admission to Intensive Care Units and has a peculiar behavior in a very small group of children. The post-COVID syndrome, which undoubtedly exists, is at first sight not clearly distinguishable from clinical manifestations that which occur after other acute viral diseases and after prolonged stays in ICUs due to other diseases. Therefore, it offers excellent research opportunities to clarify its pathogenesis and possibly that of other related entities. It is possible that progressively there will be an increased demand for care among the millions of people who have suffered and overcome acute COVID for which the health authorities should design mechanisms for the agile management of care that will possibly require well-coordinated multidisciplinary groups. This paper, structured in questions on different aspects of the post-COVID syndrome, attempts to stage the current state of this problem. A further closure of the water circuit in paper mills with a relative high optimization of their water network is limited by the increase of contamination in the water and runnability problems of the paper machine. Therefore, new strategies for saving water must be focussed on the treatment of final effluents of the paper mill, aiming to obtain high quality water that may replace fresh water use in some applications. An appropriate treatment train performed at pilot scale, consisting on a previous clarification stage followed by anaerobic and aerobic treatments, ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis, made possible producing the highest water quality from the final effluent of the mill. Anaerobic pre-treatment showed very good performance assisting the aerobic stage on removing organics and sulphates, besides it produced enough biogas for being considered as cost-effective. Permeate recovery depended on the silica content of the paper mill effluent, and it was limited to a 50–60%. The reject of the membranes fully met the legislation requirements imposed to effluents arriving to municipal wastewater treatment plants.

A pilot plant study has been carried out to compare the effectiveness of different low pressure membrane systems (microfiltration and ultrafiltration) as pretreatments for a reverse osmosis system producing high quality reclaimed water from the effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant receiving a high percentage of industrial wastewater. The reclaimed water will be used to substitute fresh water in a paper mill. Although the implemented systems showed several problems derived from the unstable quality of the feed water, they were solid enough to keep a constant permeate quality; i.e. percentages of salt rejection above 99%, efficiencies in the removal of microorganisms to lower values than 1 CFU/100 mL, and final COD results below the detection limit (

Abstract: Introduction: Digital competencies are a reference for the training of adolescents in the face of new digitalization processes, especially the use of social networks where they consume and produce personal information through different digital self-representation practices. These practices and the risks they pose to the privacy of minors are described in this paper based on a review of recent studies on the subject and data from a sample of Spanish adolescents (n=2066) aged between 12 and 18 years. Methodology: The methodology was quantitative, using a Likert-type scale questionnaire that complies with expert validation criteria and reliability, answered anonymously by the minors. Results: Among the results, similar practices stand out in three of the social networks most used by adolescents (WhatsApp, Instagram and Spotify), associated with the use of photos, name and real location, as well as the non-filtering of contacts, with minors being aware that sharing personal information poses risks to their privacy and having received training in this regard. Discussion and Conclusion: Finally, it is concluded that training in protective behaviors should be integrated into basic digital skills, so that minors learn to interact safely on social networks, with responsibility and taking care of their privacy and digital self-representation. Essas formas de difusão também são analisadas neste trabalho.ABSTRACTThis work analyzes the characteristics of gray literature, evaluating the use of this useful information source for teachers, students and researches of business administration and accounting. Moreover, it studies new kinds of diffusion of the scientific knowledge with the use of open archives, preprints and open-access bases. Although we found restrictions of some academics communities, the use of this kind of reference have been growing, justifying its importance. In many cases, it is the only primary information source about some subjects. The Internet has led to increase of the gray literature uses, such as reports and studies. Websites, electronic presentations and interactions with on-line groups have made possible the exchange of more information, allowing the evolution of the knowledge in accounting and business administration.

Within the framework of this essay, the purpose of this discussion is to highlight the embargo that academic and scientific productions have been suffering, in the field of written publications, by databases owned by transnational commercial consortia, whose corporate mission has been fundamentally oriented to profit. In this embargo process, researchers have lost control and sovereignty over their intellectual production. Research has been reduced to management criteria, and the communication of knowledge has been restricted by monetary transactions and corporate marketing.

The study of the press during the third peronist government is a field that currently deserves to be investigated in greater depth. With the aim of making a contribution in this regard, we propose to take as an object of analysis the journalistic discourse of Panorama magazine of Abril, a renowned editorial publishing house. For such purpose, we will focus on the representations that this magazine published about peronism and its main representatives, while its publishing company was going through a serious crisis due to the political and economic pressures it received from sectors linked to the ruling party, a circumstance that would lead to the closing of the magazine and the decline of its institutional trajectory., Facultad de Periodismo y Comunicación Social

In this work was studied the residuality of organophosphorus (OP) and organochlorinated (OC) pesticides in fruits of two Solanaceae species which are commonly consumed in the daily diet by the population of Quindio, Colombia: tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) from regional crops, and cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.) obtained from supermarkets. In order to evaluate the quality in which the fruit is commercialized, physicochemical parameters as pH and soluble solids concentration (°Bx) were measured. The skin and pulp pesticides analysis in both fruits was performed using gas chromatography with microelectron capture detection (GC-μ-ECD), and employing solid-phase extraction techniques as sample pretreatment. The result of the chromatographic analysis showed the presence of 10 different OP and OC pesticides both in the skin as well as in the pulp of both fruits, some of them in higher concentrations than 0.13 ppm for tomatoes and 0.39 ppm for gooseberries. The results found in this study suggest the high residuality of these substances, revealing the disproportionate use of these pesticides in the cultivation of consumer crops as tomatoes and gooseberries. In this sense, this work suggests that the agricultural practices are poorly implemented revealing the lack of a more rigorous control over the use of these agrochemicals. In the early 1960s, Chinese mathematician Mei-Ko Kwan (M. Guan) introduced a method aimed at minimizing mail carriers’ route lengths. This method led to the exploration of various formulations of the Chinese Postman Problem (CPP), resulting in at least eight distinct formulations. In response to a practical concern, a new problem formulation called the Priority Constrained Chinese Postman Problem (PCCPP) emerged. In PCCPP, a linear order is provided for a set of significant nodes, and the objective is to traverse all edges at least once while prioritizing the prompt visitation of higher-priority nodes. This paper presents a modified approach to Chinese Postman Problems (CPP) using priorities in a fuzzy environment ranking function applied to priority nodes in CPP to get the optimal result. Finally, this paper also illustrates and justifies the implementation of the modified approach with a numerical problem. The consideration of multi-factors in a multi-graph with priorities gives another scope of research. JEL Codes: C44 Received: 18/07/2024. Accepted: 29/09/2024. Published: 13/10/2024.

The paper offers a thorough analysis of the historical development of public administration, aiming to gain deeper insights into the current challenges facing the discipline. Utilizing an evolutionary theoretical lens, the study sheds light on the transitional development of Public Administration (PA). Additionally, it discusses the New Public Administration (NPA) and its implications for the integrity of the public administration discipline. Through a comprehensive review of literature, the paper establishes that despite the logical progressions of public administration presented in literature, there is evidence of a recurring identity crisis within the discipline, with significant implications for business education. Furthermore, the paper proposes an ideal concept of a lesson on Public Administration based on current literature, while examining the notion of the dichotomy between political science and public administration. It also argues that the theoretical framework underpinning the development of public administration is likely to evolve due to the dynamic societal consciousness that shapes this discipline. Ultimately, the paper suggests a theoretical framework that may gain traction in management and business education by combining the founding principles of public administration with the contemporary emerging needs of a transitional industrial order.

Social Responsibility (CSR) is a topic that has acquired great interest in the late 90's of the last century, this subject arises from the financial crisis, more exactly after the crisis of the technological bubble better known as the phenomenon "Punto Com ”, this crisis produced little credibility in the companies, unbalanced in the social legitimacy of large firms. From that moment the trend of relations between the company and society began, with a set of requirements towards ethical and responsible behavior of companies. Thus, the culture of CSR "begins to defend the idea that the contribution to well-being and quality of life should be the goal of all social institutions, of course also of the company, whether profit or not, and from different organizations international and multisectoral groups promote the development of standards, codes of conduct, guidelines, norms and other instruments to facilitate the implementation of more honest practices, transparency in management or respect for the environment, among others ”(Franch, 2007 ). Taking into account this preamble to the concept of CSR in this work, we want to identify if this topic is being applied in the services provided by the Barcelona Activa Company, which is located in Barcelona, a city with 1,601,993 inhabitants (Barcelona, 2014), is one of the most populated in the European Union, Catalonia is currently the industrial engine of Spain with a share in GDP of 20% and ¼ of Spanish exports; In addition to having one of the most important ports in the world, it has strong service economies such as: renewable energy, higher education and tourism. Barcelona Activa is a company that has been dedicated for more than 25 years to executing the economic promotion policies of the Barcelona city council, offering help to companies to create entrepreneurship and employment, also linked to showing the country as an excellent setting of economic activity and social progress. Sulphurs are present in different rocks. During min ing activities and the sulphur removal processes Ac id Mine Drainage (AMD) may be produced, by sulphate ions (SO 4 2- ) in solution. AMDs are the main source of pollutio n from mining operations and in Colombia their discharge into natural bodies of water must comply with national environmental regulations (pH between 5 and 9). Cement Kiln Dust (CKD), with calcium carbonate as its main component, from a Cementos Argos S.A. plant was used to neut ralize an AMD generated through a coal bio-desulphurization process. Neutra lized AMDs had pH values between 7.72 ‐ 8.05 and the sulphates removal ranged from 67% to 70%. Precipitated sludge was dried and analyzed in order to determine its chemical and min eralogical composition. Moisture content was between 69% and 81%; this precipitated material was composed of gypsum with approximately 50% purity, as well as calcium carbonate. This composition makes i t suitable for use in cement production.

Educational institutions have had the pending task of knowing what really happens in their classrooms, which professors make a real difference, which students would need help to improve their performance, and even more importantly, how to manage the enormous amount of information gathered each year. To address this problem, in this paper we propose the use of retrospective data from 210 undergraduate courses in Spain, which equals 1,320 European credits, 10,500 students, and four complete academic years (18/19, 19/20, 20/21, 21/22) to generate a monitoring tool or automatic dashboard with which to try to optimize the operation of such institutions and help them to make (even more) optimal decisions. To do this, all courses were grouped into ten typologies or categories: (1) if they were 'soft skills'/'hard skills' courses, (2) if they were taught in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th academic year, (3) if the professor was male or female, (4) whether the course was taught in English or not, (5) whether the professor was internal and permanent staff of the university or an associate professor with a temporary contractual relationship with the institution, (6) whether his/her main professional activity was teaching, therefore being more academic-oriented or this was rather a hobby and a complementary professional activity, therefore being more practical-oriented, (7) their age, (8) if several professors shared the course or only one taught it, (9) if it was a semester or annual course, (10) and if it was taught during the Covid-19 period or outside of it. Our results show that, despite the existence of numerous types of methodologies to achieve the desired student motivation, there would only be one category that would generate significant differences in the grades of the students: if they were ‘soft skills’/’hard skills’ courses. However, on the contrary, there would be much more types of courses (and professors) which would affect the preferences and valuation of the student to the teaching received (and effectively paid by him/her). That is, despite reaching the same academic results, students do value one type of professors better than others. Likewise, through this work it is intended to demonstrate the non-existence of the "false belief" that better evaluations received by professors are since they give higher grades to their students, regardless of its dispersion. In this way, it is intended to prevent possible atypical behaviors by professors. Thus, this paper gives light to (re)consider which variables should actually matter in educational institutions, analyzing its teaching-learning processes, management and even the retention of its key players.

[EN] The paper reviews the characteristics for the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) growth in the three main table olive types in the international trade. The only typical spontaneous lactic process is that followed in the Spanish-style green olives. The growth of LAB throughout storage in brine of ripe olives and fermentation of naturally ripe (black) olives depends on various factors such as olive cultivars, sodium chloride concentration, initial pH correction, etc. The knowledge of the spontaneous growth conditions is essential for a better microbiological control and the efficient use of starter cultures in these fermentations., La CICYT por la ayuda concedida dentro del Proyecto ALI94-0980-C02-01, dentro de cuyas actividades se encuadra este trabajo.

The paper aims to analyze the contradiction between green consumers' behavior and green technology foods offered to them. An analysis of papers from different authors showed that green consumers are willing to make conscious food consumption. However, factors like price, knowledge about the green cause, consumer income, reference groups, shopping convenience, and food availability influence their final consumption. Collective intelligence is a solution for green consumers to make better decisions: it also involves challenges, ethical considerations, and avoiding political influences on shared information. In conclusion, governments and food producers must do a lot to ensure green consumers have enough tools to make informed and sustainable alimentary decisions.

[EN] The main objective of this research has been the valorisation of a waste from the TiO2 production process (sulphate method), called red gypsum, in the production of cements. This waste is mainly formed by di-hydrate calcium sulphate and iron hydroxides. To cover this objective it has been necessary to perform the physico-chemical characterisation of the red gypsum as well as the main components in the production of cements and of the new cements generated. Moreover, for the red gypsum, has been analyzed its radioactive content because it is generated in a NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials) industry. Finally, the most important properties of the obtained cements with different proportions of red gypsum in their composition have been studied by comparing them with the standard ones obtained in a Portland cement. This work has been supported by the PROFIT Project “Valorization of red gypsum from the industrial production of titanium dioxide” (CIT-310200-2007-47).

[Abstract:] The mix design for asphalt mixtures containing recycled aggregates from construction and demolition debris was evaluated. The tests conducted to characterize the mechanical behaviour of these mixtures showed that the mechanical properties of mixtures with recycled and virgin aggregate are similar. The asphalt mixtures containing recycled aggregate proved to have lower resistance to water action. Nonetheless, recycled aggregate was found to be potentially usable in asphalt mixtures if higher quality materials are selected and such low resistance is corrected. This will call for expanding upon the preliminary work described in the present article.

The rapid development of the new generation of digital technology has injected new vitality into the digital transformation (DT) and continued growth of enterprises. This paper selects data from China's A-share listed companies from 2010 to 2019 and uses transaction cost theory to empirically test the effect of enterprise digital transformation (EDT) on enterprise growth and its mechanism. Research has found that DT can significantly promote enterprise growth. The reduction of supply chain collaboration costs plays an important role as an intermediary mechanism in this process. At the same time, industry competition intensity, regional marketization level, and digital infrastructure level have played positive regulatory roles. In addition, when the enterprise's level of financing constraints is low and it is a manufacturing enterprise or state-owned enterprise, the promotion effect of EDT on enterprise growth is more significant. While expanding the research perspective and measurement methods of EDT, this paper integrates the strategic actions of EDT and the inter-enterprise collaboration costs of the supply chain into a unified theoretical framework, revealing a new theoretical mechanism for DT to promote enterprise growth. It also provides practical inspiration for relevant policy formulation and enterprise transformation and upgrading.

Crowdfunding is an Internet-based fundraising method that relies on contributions from a large crowd of investors to fund innovative and risky projects. The aim of this paper is to analyse which combinations of signals commonly studied for crowdfunding success lead to overfunding. Based on the information asymmetries between fund-seeking entrepreneurs and the crowd, this paper draws on signalling theory to explore the elements of campaign design that contribute to overfunding (i.e. raising at least 10 % above the funding target). The paper focuses on the entrepreneur's identity as an individual or corporation, pitch video length, budget explanation length, number of images, project abstract length, and number of updates by the entrepreneur. Qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) is performed using publicly available data sourced from 257 socially oriented projects from a reward-based crowdfunding platform. The results show the importance for entrepreneurs of using images and constantly communicating with the crowd. The results also reveal a series of configurations of design features that result in overfunding. These findings have practical implications for the design of reward-based crowdfunding campaigns and contribute to a better understanding of how economic agents interact within crowdfunding.

Abstract This study explores the following theoretical research question: How can business ethics help to reframe corporate sustainability strategies? This paper’s contribution to corporate sustainability (CS) theory is the interconnection of concepts and models from disparate fields of thought, addressing gaps of perception that can impair the development of CS strategies. This paper’s main result is a comprehensive and articulated framework that links the societal level of sustainability to the organizational dimension of CS and the individual dimension of managers’ moral orientation. The framework reinforces the perception that business ethics driven by a normative orientation could improve CS results when supported by an organizational culture that allows reversing ethical blindness.

Investment and financing decisions are especially important in a family firm context, as family and business dynamics interact to produce unique behaviors that may affect these decisions. However, research on how the family nature of these firms shapes their investment and financing preferences is still lacking. To help fill this gap, this study aims to provide a robust picture of the literature to identify key questions that can help guide future research. Using a systematic approach based on bibliometrics and network analysis of 891 papers published in the Web of Science database between 1992 and 2023, we show the evolution of research in terms of publications and identify the most active and influential articles, authors, and journals. Using bibliographic coupling analysis, the paper reveals the thematic structure and trends of the research. This study provides valuable insights into the future by identifying knowledge gaps and offering guidance to both researchers and practitioners seeking to understand the specific needs and challenges faced by family firms in their investment and financing endeavors.

Graduate education plays a role in improving the scope for employability of graduates. It empowers them with specialized skills, advanced knowledge, and critical thinking, which increases the scope for their employability. However, in the case of Saudi Arabia, it has been reported that there is widespread unemployment in the country. Though the Saudi Arabian government has initiated measures to nurture development in education through their ‘Saudi Vision 2030’ program, a gap exists. There are strong indictors which point at a mismatch of knowledge and skills possessed by graduates in Saudi, and the requirements of the labour market. Therefore, this paper examines the apparent gap between academia and employers in terms of employability, while focusing on whether graduate students have the same set of skills that employers require. Using a review method, information was derived from secondary sources, mainly from papers having examined the same topic previously. From the findings, academia believed that the educational system needed an overhaul and economic diversification, with the creation of new employment opportunities. Though employers believed that Saudi graduates lacked soft skills impacting their employability. It was concluded that a collaboration between students and employers was required, where employers could offer inputs supporting graduate employability.

In this paper I consider the question of self-governing in relation to MacIntyrean practices. It is not uncommon to discover MacIntyrean practices being described as self-governing in at least some sense. However, while there are seemingly valid reasons for why this might be thought the case, in my paper I argue that there is something very different visible in MacIntyre’s writings here. Indeed, what I want to emphasise regarding MacIntyre’s position in relation to the governing of practices is that rather than self-governing, at most MacIntyrean practices are self-directing or self-guiding. Therefore, although for MacIntyre governing of practices is fundamentally important, what I draw attention to is how, on the whole, this governing happens from outside, and that direction and guidance if and when it does happen, happens in a very specific, internal way aside from governing.
