Despite physical exercise is a good indicator of health promotion, the population with intellectual and developmental disabilities tends to have high levels of physical inactivity that influence their physical fitness, health, and quality of life (QoL). The present study aimed to analyse the functional physical fitness and QoL, as well as the associations between them, of a sample of the population with IDD. Thirty-seven individuals (42,54±11,12 years) with IDD were evaluated through the tests standing up and sitting on a chair, timed up and go and walking for 6 minutes, with the purpose of analysing physical fitness and the Personal Outcome Scale (POS) to measure physical well-being. Pearson's correlations were applied and the correlation between physical well-being and the tests stand up and sit down and walk for 6 minutes was verified. The results indicate an association between functional skills measured through the tests and physical well-being, suggesting that the promotion of these skills can positively influence the physical well-being of the sample used. ABSTRACT Objectives: to reflect on theoretical framework use in nursing research. Methods: a theoretical-reflexive study, based on concepts and constructs pertinent to using nursing theories and other sciences, considering issues of epistemology or philosophy of science. Results: we presented what it is and why to do nursing research and what a theoretical framework is and why to use it, in addition to some considerations regarding theoretical framework use in nursing research, essential for constructing disciplinary knowledge, which enables the materialization of researchers’ work and the presentation of propositions resulting from investigations in and for nursing as a discipline and science. Final Considerations: based on a reflection based on epistemological conceptions, it is possible to affirm that a theoretical framework is the core of researchers’ thinking, delimiting a problem to be investigated and, based on it, outlining methodological strategies to be followed, supporting nursing action and thinking as discipline and science.

institutional analysis ,latin america ,research ,social psychology ,Social Sciences ,Social sciences (General) ,H1-99 - Abstract
In this interview, Roberto Manero Brito presents the developments of institutional analysis in Latin America, particularly its connection with the Argentine group dynamic trend. Instituting, self-management, and general assembly, among other mobilizing myths, took on a unique form in this continent through the intersection of psychoanalysis, group work, and the desire for social change. Manero notes that institutional analysis in Latin America has been guided more by a logic of mestizaje than by an illusion of theoretical-technical purity. To integrate this perspective into the realm of education in social sciences, the field needs to be prioritized, the research assignments questioned, and a specific relationship between social knowledge and specialized knowledge established, centered on listening and a transition from empathy to sympathy. Questioning academic structures and building a sense of community around research and intervention issues are key elements for this transition. The final part of the interview focuses on the promotional orientation of social psychology, specifically the commitment to the collective construction of knowledge and the creation of new social meanings.

Objective: To analyze the perception of nurses about working conditions in the context of PHC during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study with a qualitative approach, part of a multicenter study with a national scope. The data presented in this study correspond to those obtained in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in which 45 nurses from primary health care were interviewed from December 2020 to April 2021. After the interviews, the recorded narratives were transcribed and analyzed through the Bardin's Content Analysis. Results: The collective discourse showed that the use of Personal Protective Equipment, the organization and development of new protocols and care flows brought psychic suffering to professionals, both due to inadequate working conditions and the proximity to the suffering of patients and the fear of Contagion. Conclusion: Even with so many difficulties, nurses working in primary health care had to rebuild their practices in order to guarantee, within the limits imposed by the adverse situation, the best possible assistance, showing the strength and resilience of PHC teams in the most diverse contexts. Objective: To identify nursing practices aimed at women's health care within the scope of Primary Health Care (PHC), characterizing them by the way they occur and the place they occupy in the nurses' work process. Methods: This is a descriptive, exploratory and qualitative study. The material consists of 27 interviews with nurses carried out between November 2020 and March 2021. Results: Nursing actions aimed at women's health occupy a representative space in the nurses' routine. The main actions identified are aimed at maternal and child health. Family planning was also identified as a recurrent educational action. Assistance to violence and climacteric were not mentioned. The nurses' autonomy in the area of expertise in focus in this study was highlighted as positive in the work process. Conclusion: The practice of nurses in PHC privileges health in the reproductive cycle of women, especially in the prenatal period. However, referrals are observed in the search for an integral practice, through the inclusion of more humanized actions in the services. There is still a need to expand the focus of women's health care in PHC, and for that it is necessary to strengthen the discussions and studies on these neglected themes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To analyze the work process of Primary Health Care nurses in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis and interpreted in light of the relevant literature. Results: The fear of lacking personal protective equipment was evidenced and the refusal of care in the absence of these. Teleconsultation was used as a means of nursing care, which showed limitations such as invasion of nurses' privacy, extension of the workday and overload. The health care of women and children was prioritized. Also, there was an effort to host suspected and acute cases of COVID-19. There was work overload and accumulation of functions. However, lessons were learned, such as valuing protective measures such as hand hygiene. Conclusion: The need to create and validate new protocols that strengthen nursing care is inferred, as well as the importance of stimulating health policies to control Health-Related Infections. Background: Nurses need not only practical knowledge to apply Advanced Life Support (ALS) but also theoretical knowledge. Objectives: To assess nurses' theoretical knowledge of ALS in the care of critically ill people and to examine the relationship between nurses' theoretical knowledge of ALS in the care of critically ill people and their sociodemographic, academic, and professional variables. Methodology: A quantitative and descriptive-correlational study was conducted on 36 nurses selected through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. Results: In the applied questionnaire, the nurses achieved a correct answer rate of 73.53%. Statistically significant differences were found between specialist nurses and their knowledge of emergency drug administration [amiodarone (t = 4.292; p = 0.038); and atropine (t = 4.912; p = 0.027)] and capnography monitoring (t = 4.788; p = 0.029). Conclusion: Nurses showed good levels of theoretical knowledge of ALS, and practical refresher training every 3 months is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Assuming the role of a caregiver involves meeting several demands. Understanding the caregiver's perspective can aid in this transition. Objective: To identify caregivers' perceptions of the requirements for taking on this role. Methodology: A descriptive exploratory study with a qualitative approach was conducted, using semi-structured interviews with a convenience sample of nine caregivers of dependent persons without previous experience. The data obtained was analyzed using MAXQDA software and followed Bardin's principles of content analysis. Ethical principles were adhered to, and the study was approved by the Ethics Committee (opinion OBS.SF.245-2021). Results: The data analysis revealed three categories and their subcategories: Awareness; Skills, (Feeling capable of providing care after hospital discharge; Knowledge; Capabilities; Emotional self-control); and Resources. Conclusion: The requirements identified in caregivers' perceptions can improve nurses' assessment of the conditions that facilitate the assumption of this role in the context studied. Future studies should focus on the perceptions of health professionals/clinicians regarding this phenomenon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The predisposition to pressure ulcers (PU) is related to a prolonged process of disability that indicates frailty, functional decline and dependence, with malnutrition being a preponderant factor in its evolution. The present study aimed to relate the risk of developing PU with the nutritional status and frailty of elderly people institutionalised in residential structures for the elderly (ERPIs). It was a Quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study. A questionnaire was used, which included questions to characterise the participants, the Braden scale, the Mini Nutrition Assessment, and the Groningen Frailty Index. One hundred and thirty-four institutionalised users participated in the study: 86 (64.2%) were female, with an average age of 85.0 (SD=7.9) years, 94 (70.1%) widowed, and 78 (58.2%) had not completed elementary school. The results indicated that 48 (35.8%) of the elderly were at high risk of developing PU, 77 (57.4%) were classified as malnourished or at risk of malnutrition and 110 (82.1%) were frail. Assessing the risk of PU, frailty and malnutrition in institutionalised elderly people makes it possible to institute preventive measures to improve their quality of life. The prevention of PU is an indicator of the quality of care provided. Therefore, clinical practice must be based on current evidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Healthcare must provide an appropriate response to individual and family needs, engaging the community, promoting shared responsibility, and aligning existing resources with citizen requirements. Individuals in situations of dependency often rely on family caregivers, necessitating family adjustments and specific training to fulfil the caregiver role. The present study aimed to analyse the relationship between satisfaction with social support and the burden on informal caregivers. This observational study employed a cross-sectional, quantitative, and descriptive-correlational approach. Data collection was conducted through a questionnaire. A total of 51 informal caregivers participated in the study. Of these caregivers, 78.4% were women, 29.4% had a medium/low level of education, and 52.9% assumed the role of informal caregiver for five or more years. We observed some level of burden in 80.4% of informal caregivers, with a more significant impact on those who had assumed the caregiver role for approximately 1-2 years. The most sought-after support involved social support for economic assistance (76.5%) and caring for the family member (49%). The study highlights the importance of nurses implementing interventions to enhance caregivers' knowledge, promote health literacy regarding social support, and facilitate group dynamics, allowing informal caregivers to share experiences and navigate situational transitions. According to official statistics, more and more people are dying from chronic and oncological diseases, dragging the last days of life into health institutions. In this sense, the discussion about the defence of the dignity of the patient at the end of life has often gone hand in hand with the discussion of euthanasia. We carried out an exploratory study of a qualitative nature, with the aim of identifying the situations that, in the opinion of nursing students, can lead to the loss of dignity of the terminally ill patient and the reasons that can lead them to request euthanasia. The sample consisted of 55 undergraduate nursing students, and the data was collected using a questionnaire consisting mainly of open questions. The data was processed using content analysis following the procedures described by Bardin. The main results indicate that the situations that can lead patients to feel a loss of dignity are loss of autonomy, abandonment, suffering, lack of respect, pity and loss of self. The reasons for evoking euthanasia are suffering, loss of autonomy, loss of hope, being a burden on the family and loss of meaning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The World Health Organization defines Health Literacy as a person's ability to obtain and understand basic health information and to use available health services responsibly. The present study aimed to assess the level of health literacy of patients attending a nursing consultation at a health centre in northern Portugal. It was an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational study with a quantitative approach. One hundred subjects enrolled in the nursing consultation participated in the study, and data was collected using the health literacy questionnaire HLS-EU-PT. The majority of participants (63%) were female, aged between 18 and 94; most (34%) were 65 years and older, and 35% had completed their elementary school. As for health literacy, 32% of participants had an inadequate level, 56% a problematic level and 12% a sufficient level. The low levels of health literacy of the users of a nursing consultation who participated in the study indicate the need to implement intervention projects to empower participants and their families in health literacy and self-care. Psychological well-being is a multidimensional concept that includes social, subjective, and psychological dimensions and emphasises people's potential and ability to achieve well-being. The aim of this research was to assess the level of psychological well-being in students attending the Nursing Degree Course at a university in the north of the country, as well as its relationship with gender and age. The present research is a quantitative, cross-sectional and correlational study, with a non-probabilistic sample for convenience, consisting of 203 students attending the Nursing Degree Course in 2022. Data was collected through a questionnaire consisting of questions to characterise the students and the General Psychological Well-Being Questionnaire, adapted and validated for Portuguese students. It consists of six items, answered on a Likert-type scale, with five alternative answers. The score ranges from zero to thirty, and the higher the score, the higher the level of psychological well-being. It was found that 77.8% of the students were female, and 59.1% were over 20 years old. The students showed psychological well-being, with an average score of 16.8. A statistically significant relationship was only found between item 2, "How much energy or vitality did you feel?", with a higher score for males. This study made it possible to design a community intervention project aiming to enable students to adopt coping strategies that promote psychological well-being, which are essential for ensuring the developmental processes inherent in the life cycle they are going through. Technological progress and the advancement of scientific knowledge in health provide a longer life. Still, on their own, they do not guarantee the desired quality of life, as they can lead to therapeutic obstinacy or dysthanasia, undermining the autonomy of the person. The main aim of this research was to analyse the knowledge, attitudes and practices of nurses at a hospital centre in the north of Portugal regarding advance directives. This is a descriptive and correlational study with a quantitative approach carried out among 270 nurses. The majority of participants were female (87%), with an average age of 39 and an average time in professional practice of 15 years. 52.9% of the nurses revealed that they had a "Good" level of knowledge, although there were gaps in some points of the law and in the operationalisation of the consultation of Advance Directives of willingness. The results of this study seem to suggest that nurses have adequate knowledge and show a positive attitude towards people with valid Advance Directives. However, it is important to expand research in this area and invest in the knowledge and training of nurses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The present study is an investigation into two experiences related to deprivation of liberty, developed at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, that consists of an extension program and a research project on sentence remission through reading. In this investigation, we aim to understand how research and extension complement each other in the training of undergraduate students. To achieve this, we draw from our experiences as research or extension students through an autobiographical approach and develop our narratives on the educational dimension, in which we are immersed as students of Pedagogy and Social Sciences. Initial results indicate the importance of the dialogue between extension and research, as we perceive in our experiences that both are in a dialogical relationship. Research contributes to mapping data, laws, theoretical frameworks to be used, and the practices that are developed. Extension, from the perspective of popular education, can promote dialogues of different knowledge, exchanges of proposals for action, and social intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The interplay between extension, research, and postgraduate education poses a continuous challenge for higher education institutions dedicated to fulfilling their societal role by nurturing professionals who can address contemporary needs and foresee societal futures. This article explores the misconception within educational institutions that relegate research solely to postgraduate realms, highlighting its potential as a means for professional qualification beyond the technical-scientific dimension. It emphasizes the importance of integrating theoretical and practical aspects committed to societal needs. The journey towards integrating extension activities into the knowledge production space faces numerous challenges due to the entrenched structures within the Brazilian higher education culture, which perpetuates a fragmented education model rooted in dilettante scientism. However, this text showcases efforts by various national institutions to illustrate how this integration is crucial in developing higher education that seeks not only academic excellence but also social commitment. This approach represents an investment in the future, equipping the next generation of researchers to tackle society is complex and pressing challenges with wisdom, empathy, and practical solutions. Thus, integrating extension into research and postgraduate studies is not merely an ideal but a necessity for an impactful and relevant academy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Nursing students are exposed to stress during their nursing program, particularly during clinical practice. Identifying the coping strategies used during this period can help identify resources to mitigate the stress they face. Objective: To translate and validate the Coping Behavior Inventory (CBI) into European Portuguese. Methodology: Methodological study with a nonprobability sample of 113 students attending the four years of the nursing program. To assess the psychometric properties of the instrument, its validity was analyzed using the principal component analysis method and its internal consistency by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Results: Four common factors were extracted from the exploratory factor analysis, explaining 57.5% of the variance, with a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.668 for the total scale. Conclusion: The European Portuguese version of the CBI has adequate psychometric characteristics and is a reliable tool for assessing the coping strategies used by nursing students.
