LANGUAGE policy , *GLOBALIZATION , *LINGUISTICS , *LITERACY ,DEVELOPING countries - Abstract
This article aims to present the documents and practices related to the internationalization of education at IFFar, in order to problematize how the creation of a language policy aimed at internationalization can impact internationalization actions in all educational areas of the institution. Our theoretical perspective is based on the assumptions of Sulear Applied Linguistics (Pennycook; Makoni, 2020) and Academic Literacy studies (Lea; Street, 1998, 2006). The results of this research indicate that there is an institutional interest and/or need to regulate and organize guidelines relating to the internationalization of education and the establishment of a language policy. However, from a comprehensive perspective of internationalization, it is necessary to reflect consciously and act critically so that actions and, above all, policies can contribute effectively to IFFar and through IFFar. The study examines rhetorical figures in Ondó praise chants with a view to providing a detailed analysis that contributes to the understanding of the linguistic and cultural intricacies inherent in this particular form or genre of praise chant. Among others, the study identifies the rhetorical figures employed in the linguistic construction of "Oríkì Òndó”. It analyses the cultural nuances and symbolism encapsulated within the rhetorical devices used in the praise chant. The study further explores how specific rhetorical figures contribute to the rhythmic and aesthetic qualities of "Oríkì Òndó" in a distinct manner. To achieve these objectives, the study involves in-depth analysis of recorded `Ondó praise chants, interviews with practitioners. Data are analyzed using Fahnestock’s (2011) principles of Rhetorical Style. Findings show that the "Oríkì Òndó" is a reservoir of rhetorical richness, employing various figures such as metaphor, hyperbole and symbolism. Findings further reveal the fact that the chants not only showcase a mastery of language but also serve as a cultural repository, encapsulating the essence and identity of the Òndó people. The study concludes that the "Oríkì Òndó" stands not only as a testament to the past but also as a living art form that continues to resonate and evolve within the cultural fabric of the Yòrùbá people.

This investigation is situated on the theme of linguistic policy in Libras. The objective is to analyze the linguistic attitudes expressed in the opinions of deaf signers regarding the term signs of the video test of Natural Sciences and its Technologies of the National High School Exam (Enem) in Libras in the year 2018. The methodology is of a quantitative-qualitative nature. and for data collection, two instruments were used (online questionnaire and interview). The attitudes expressed in the participants' statements were classified into four categories of analysis. The opinions of deaf participants show that their beliefs, values, trajectories and sociocultural experiences motivate different linguistic attitudes towards the signs-terms of the Exam. Arguments about utterances in Libras were cited, with the semantic aspect predominating as important to clarify the understanding of the term signs and, in turn, to endorse acceptability. Difficulties in the intelligibility of the video test questions were also mentioned due to ambiguous or even polysemic elaborations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the intersection between the concept of performativity from linguistics and the foundations of feminist theology, with the aim of discussing Gender Inclusive Language as a tool for promoting Gender Justice. From the perspective of Feminist Theology, the article investigates how language not only reflects, but also constructs and perpetuates power structures and gender identities within religious contexts. The study analyzes how gender performativity can be used to understand and challenge gender dynamics in theological practices, being applied in Feminist Theology to promote Gender Justice through Gender Inclusive Language in Christian communities. LINGUISTICS , *PORTUGUESE language , *LANGUAGE & languages , *LOANWORDS , *ENGLISH language , *CULTURAL pluralism - Abstract
Bill No. 1676, 1999, by Aldo Rebelo, aims primarily to defend the Portuguese language against the misuse of foreign words, especially from the English language. However, the bill presents critical points, such as the lack of technical knowledge about linguistic issues and the intertwining of political-economic issues with pragmatic issues of the Portuguese language. Furthermore, the bill ignores the evolution of the lexicon of the Portuguese language from Vulgar Latin and the influence of loanwords from other languages in enriching the language. The text discusses bill No. 1676, proposed by former deputy Aldo Rebelo, which aims to protect the Portuguese language from the influence of foreign words, especially English. The author argues that the imposition of language is a form of cultural domination but does not take into consideration historical examples that contradict this idea. Furthermore, the text questions the concern about the use of foreign words, highlighting that understanding depends on context and people's education. It is concluded that the bill is based on weak foundations and motivated by political interests, ignoring the work of linguistic science and the importance of cultural diversity. DISCURSIVE practices , *LINGUISTICS , *SOCIOLINGUISTICS , *DISCOURSE analysis - Abstract
It has long been no longer possible to say that discursive studies are an unknown reality in Brazil. If in the advent of linguistics, conventionally said in Saussure, the articulation between language and society was a point that would not receive attention then, the present imposes a contrary conclusion - made easily verifiable, for example, through a search on "discursive studies" on Google Scholar or other research tool for scientific articles. At the same time, there is still a lack of studies that focus on presentations, systematizations and comments on certain texts / authors or concepts, in order to favor a possible reader in the vast field of discursive studies. Our text aims, then, to propose a reading of the contributions that studies on language - in a discursive perspective - can offer to Linguistics. Thus, starting from Charaudeau and Maingueneau, we will present some concepts in order to situate, in perspective, discursive studies as part of linguistic science. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article addresses the broad research aim of understanding migrants’ experiences of homelessness during the Coronavirus Disease of (COVID-19) pandemic through a novel combination of linguistic and sociological analysis. In our analysis of life story interviews, we find that the United Kingdom (UK) Government’s Everyone In initiative, which suspended eligibility criteria to provide support and accommodation to those experiencing homelessness or deemed to be at risk of rough sleeping, was hugely beneficial for migrants. This indicates what is possible when there is the political will to end rough sleeping. In its analysis of life stories gathered during the pandemic, the article proceeds to identify deeper-rooted problems relating to the weak and restricted structural position of migrants experiencing homelessness. Having spent time in the UK with an ‘inferior status’, with limited access to work and welfare, economic and social capital, and often with experiences of trauma in the UK and/or in their countries of origin, many of our research participants express a lack of control and a sense of being controlled in their conditions of existence. Further, their isolation and loneliness in the individual rooms provided in the emergency accommodation is indicative of a deeper-rooted sense of separation deriving from years spent sleeping rough or living in temporary and insecure accommodation. Experiences of isolation and the sense of a lack of control are corrosive to mental health, and during the pandemic, mental health problems were also exacerbated by welfare checks and other rule-based practices that are potentially re-traumatising.

LINGUISTICS , *LINGUISTIC change , *NATURAL languages , *NINETEENTH century , *SOCIAL facts - Abstract
The study of language in the 19th century faced a great challenge: defining itself as a science at a time when there was a strong tendency to associate the term “science” only to biology, chemistry, and physics. It was imperative to remove language studies from the natural sciences and constitute an autonomous linguistic science in the humanities. Studying this period through a bibliographical research, we find a central character in this change of course: the North American William D. Whitney, who made a considerable effort to combat the tendencies of affiliating language studies to natural sciences and establish Linguistics as a field of knowledge on its own. Given the scenario described, the aim of this article is to analyze Whitney’s contributions to the foundation of linguistic science and to the widely known ideas of Ferdinand de Saussure. When studying the life and work of Whitney, we observed that he anticipated many concepts we find in Course of General Linguistics, attributed to Ferdinand de Saussure. Our primary motivation was then to understand these direct influences of Whitney on the Genevan professor’s work by carrying out a historical-comparative study. As a result, we know a little about how the statements that changed the course of linguistic science in the 19th and 20th centuries first passed through the work of the North American professor. Because of Whitney’s research, language studies changed direction: they left the field of natural facts to inscribe themselves in historical and social facts and find the definition of language as a system. LINGUISTICS , *WEBSITES , *COMICS publishing , *WEBCOMICS , *DIGITAL technology - Abstract
With the advancement of technology, we witness new textual genres emerging. Some of these are variations of already known textual genres, but which take on new characteristics based on new technologies, digital tools and semiosis. This is the case with webcomics, a variation on the comic books from the past. The growth in demand for the genre has strong roots in the popularity of comic books and their use on comic publishing websites and platforms (EISNER, 1995). The present article aims to study this emerging genre and determine its compositional characteristics. To this end, we use the theoretical assumptions of gender studies (MARTIN, 1992; HALLIDAY and HASAN, 1989) and Internet Linguistics (CRYSTAL, 2005) for specific studies on webcomics and aspects of e-discourse. Regarding the genre and its elements, we apply the concepts of the Generic Structure Potential (GSP) which describes linguistic patterns that occur in the genre by determining variables of mandatory, optional, sequential, and recursive elements. The study corpus consists of 10 (ten) texts extracted from the public online webtoon database. The results of the study indicated consistent patterns of mandatory, optional, sequential, and recursive elements in the corpus, giving the genre well-established compositional patterns. Furthermore, ediscourse aspects were also identified, such as abbreviations and acronyms; emoticons, emojis and other similar resources, new spellings and writings, hypertextuality, interactivity (comments, reader suggestions, multiple authorship, etc.), anonymity and pseudonymity and, finally, textual fragmentation. CRITICAL discourse analysis , *LINGUISTICS , *SOCIAL status , *SPEECH , *CONTENT analysis - Abstract
This article presents an analysis of the macro speech acts in a political discourse that contains exclusionary language of the xenophobic, racist, social, and ideological kind. It is based on the hypothesis that the exclusionary discourse in question follows certain linguistic patterns that aim to mask the speaker's real intentions and persuade the recipients to align themselves with his speech. To this end, the article explores linguistic theories that are at the interface of oratory, pragmatics, and textual analysis, considering textual segments that are longer than the utterance. The theoretical framework is made up of Aristotle's principles of discourse (2018), the linguistic perspective of Austin's Speech Acts (1962), van Dijk's Speech Macroacts (1980, 1981), and Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (1995, 1996, 2001). The conclusion is that the discourse analyzed is situated in a context of institutional social practice, in which the speaker represents, incorporates and performs standardized positions in the social structure, signaled several times throughout the observed pronouncement, explicit in the lexical choices themselves and in the intentions underlying them. To answer the distinct question that Foucault addresses to psychoanalysis in his 1982 course - would it correspond to the demands of the care of the self (epiméleia heautoû)? -, we proceed by a logical approximation between the structures of the subject's conception exposed in his speech, in The Hermeneutics of the Subject, and in the discourse of Lacan, in The Instance of the Letter in the Unconscious or Reason Since Freud. The purpose of the manuscript aims to continue with an unfinished problematization on the part of the French philosopher and to resonate in psychoanalysis a work that still does not have a great reception in the medium. In this paper, we aim to describe the uses of the connector diante disso in the light of Usage-Based Linguistics (Rosário, 2022; Traugott; Trousdale, 2013; Bybee, 2010, among others.), in dialogue with the pragmatic studies of the three connection domains (Sweetser,1990). In all, we analyzed one hundred tokens extracted from the Now database, present at www.corpusdoportugues.org, using both qualitative and quantitative analysis (Lacerda, 2016). We conclude that diante disso it is a polysemic connector that can convey semantic values of conclusion and consequence, distributed in a gradient perspective and organized based on morphosyntactic aspects. The dualities that permeate the Saussurean linguistics have been present since the moment that it had established itself as a science. As a way to formalize a scientific aspect, the effects of the well-known "Saussurean dichotomies" resonate in Saussurean studies to this day. However, it seems that Saussurean dualities, in their essence, do not possess an antagonistic character; they point towards an idea of complementarity, of relation. We propose, therefore, to revisit Saussurean dualities (langue and parole, diachrony and synchrony, signifier and signified, and syntagmatic and associative relations), in order to understand their dual nature and the conexions they establish with each other. Additionally, we pay close attention to de la double essence of language, approaching some considerations on form and meaning. This study helps us to understand the dual aspect of Saussurean theory beyond a dichotomous interpretation, considering it primarily as an organizing logic of Ferdinand de Saussure's thought. This article analyses, from a statistical point of view, the titles of the articles published in Análise Social (from 1963 to 2022), by comparing the words used over these six decades. Starting from the premise that a certain choice of words reflect a diverse set of "textual worlds", which are organised according to different motivations and interests, these words, produced under certain historical contexts and mediated by the work of the journal's editorial teams reveal both the continuity and the thematic changes that shaped its lexicon over time. The article is a review of the book "História da gramática no Brasil: séculos XVI a XIX" by Ricardo Cavaliere. The author discusses the history of grammar in Brazil from the 16th century to the 19th century, dividing it into three cognitive axes: embryonic grammar, rationalist grammar, and scientific grammar. The book offers reflections based on different bibliographic sources and discusses the influence of missionary linguistics, the arrival of rationalist grammar in Brazil, and topics such as the popularization of books as a source of knowledge and linguistic production for children. The review highlights the importance of the book and mentions the expectation for a second volume dedicated to Brazilian grammar in the 20th century. [Extracted from the article]

LINGUISTICS - Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to show how important it is to consider intradisciplinary features - a discipline and its characteristics - and interdisciplinary features - the relationship between this discipline and others that it intertwines with in science. We analyzed, both rhetorically (GIL, 2011) and linguistically (HYLAND, 1998, 2004, 2002, 2012), 24 abstracts taken from two journals on Language and Linguistics. The results show that, in spite of being part of Human Sciences, in the journals concerned, Language and Linguistics features interface with Biological disciplines, which add their scientific beliefs in their practices and influence on rhetoric and modalization - the use of hedges and boosters - in published abstracts. PORTUGUESE language , *SCIENTIFIC language , *LINGUISTICS , *AMERICAN English language , *POLICY sciences , *PROXIMITY spaces - Abstract
Can the Portuguese language be considered a language of science? Whether in the past or in the present, scientific policies promoted in Portugal by official bodies, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, on the one hand, and the Foundation for Science and Technology, on the other, never considered it as such. For these instances, only English is the language of science. And the partners for internationalization are preferably from American and English institutions, or else from research networks outside the "proximity geolinguistic space", that is to say, in the Anglo-Saxon space. In my view, however, a prospective and fruitful idea of Lusophony must have Portuguese, in all its varieties, as a language of science as its foundation. And this is the started point of the study presented here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The differences between Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese have been the subject of debates, clashes and scientific research for at least two centuries. In this article, we propose to observe how the linguistic ideology of the norm materializes discursively in a contemporary journalistic text published in the Diário de Notícias, in Portugal, which portrays the presence of Brazilian Portuguese expressions in the speech of Portuguese children of school age, consequence of what parents and teachers consider an addiction, motivated by the consumption of audiovisual content produced by Brazilian youtubers. One of the main features of José Saramago's fictional prose is the reflection on the use of language and, in particular, the lexicon. No other recent Portuguese author has or has had such an evident and reiterated concern. In Saramago's works, we find at each step an author that is concerned to explain to the reader the use of a certain word, reflecting on its origin and semantic peculiarities. Many of these reflections may be considered part of what in linguistics is known as implicit lexicography (VERDELHO, 1995), which refers to the act of recording, in the text itself, lexicographic or dictionarystyle definitions. Implicit lexicography occurs whenever an author presents a definition of a word or expression, with the aim of clarifying its meaning or avoiding ambiguity. The objective of this study is to identify in José Saramago's fictional works the passages in which the author presents lexicographic definitions. Such definitions are well-marked in the text and are easily distinguished from the rest of the discourse, although they are also part of it. The second term of the definition is often introduced by the verbal form é ('is'), as in «um machuco é um chaparro novo», although the author makes use of other expressions: quer dizer ('that is to say'), isto quer dizer ('this means'), isto é ('that is'), significa ('it means'), maneira de dizer ('another way of saying'), para quem não saiba ('for those who don't know'), etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies news published in the newspaper Estado de São Paulo between 1969 and 2015 about transsexuality. The objectives consist in verifying the themes of the newspaper articles and identify the voices that are present, besides carrying out a characterization of the newspaper according to the assumption of communicative situation in Linguistics. The obtained results show an increase in the number of articles published over time, as well as the broadening of subjects covered. While in the first twenty years, only doctors and jurists talk about the theme, from 1990 onwards, transsexual people start to be heard by journalists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After several discussions of the Brazilian National Education Council to meet the goals set for the improvement of education, from 2015 to 2017 a Brazilian National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) was elaborated in order to define the set of learning that all students should develop in their school path. Based on that, this research aimed to understand the Base as a situated genre of governance, identifying what are the knowledge that are being legitimized and even delegitimized with the implementation of the BNCC. The Base served, inclusive, as corpus of study, which had the theories of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Systemic-Functional Linguistics (SFL) as theoretical and methodological approaches. As results, it was possible to identify that the discourse produced by the Base is a discourse of governance, because, implicitly, highlights the focus of the changes, which will happen through the focus on essential learning, indicated by the skills and abilities worked in each curriculum component, aimed at the labor market. These values are even above the concern to keep the student in school and create the minimum conditions for study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims to discuss theoretically, from a comparative and epistemic perspective, the influence of Ferdinand de Saussure's linguistics [1857-1913] on the theoretical thought of Louis Hjelmslev [1899-1965], one of Copenhagen Linguistic Circle's founders. Specifically, its scope is the repercussion of the distinction between form and substance elaborated by the Genevan linguist in Hjelmslevian linguistics, a theory in which the concept of form occupies a central systematic place. To accomplish this, we start with a brief definition of this distinction in Saussure's linguistic theory, observing the reasons for its institution, as well as part of its foundations. Next, we aim to understand how this differentiation systematically and epistemologically constitutes Hjelmslev's theory. With this work, we hope to bring to light, in our current situation, a set of questions surrounding two of the most important theories of general linguistics in the 20th century. DISCOURSE , *LINGUISTIC analysis , *LINGUISTICS , *LITERATURE , *LANGUAGE & languages , *POETICS - Abstract
This paper attempts to bring the notion of system to the center of the discussion about the Saussurian thought and reflection on the poetics of discourse in order to understand its role both in the foundation of modern linguistics and its effects on the proposition of poetics as conceived by Henri Meschonnic. To do so, it is necessary to dissociate the notion of system from that of structure in Saussure, with the purpose of paying attention to the eminently dynamic character of the former. As discussed in this text, it is from this reflection that we can open language studies to the thought of the continuum, which transforms not only linguistic analysis but also the way of conceiving literature and art. SEMANTICS , *VALUES (Ethics) , *LINGUISTICS , *DISCOURSE , *ENUNCIATION , *AXIOMS - Abstract
This article aims to explain the path that Ducrot took to develop one of the fundamental projects of Saussure's linguistics: that of a Linguistic Semantics. To this end, based on the notions postulated by Argumentation in Language (AL), by the Polyphonic Theory of Enunciation (PTE) and by the Semantic Blocks Theory (SBT), it is intended to show how Argumentative Semantics is, in large part, a theoretical framework coherent with saussurian principles, especially with the postulates that outline a semantic theory in the chapter entitled "Linguistic value", of the Course in General Linguistics. In the first section, the principles and concepts of AL and SBT are elucidated and a semantic-argumentative analysis of a short story is carried out. In the second, the theoretical-methodological apparatus of PTE is presented and the distinction between the notions of sentence, utterance, text and discourse is systematized, as well as between their semantic values. Finally, the saussurian principles necessary for research in Argumentative Semantics are resumed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ENUNCIATION , *LINGUISTICS , *HYPOTHESIS , *ATTITUDE (Psychology) - Abstract
This article investigates the way in which Émile Benveniste operates the passage from reference as a theme to be problematized to reference as an object to be theorized. To this end, it presents a brief approach to reference as a theme in philosophy and linguistics. It then exposes the reference as a theme in a first moment of Benveniste's thought. In the following section, the text discusses reference as an object in a second moment of this thought. The results lead to a conclusion and a hypothesis. The conclusion is that Benveniste, in both moments, establishes a critical dialogue with Saussure, but, while in the first moment the dialogue is only retrospective, in the second moment, the dialogue is both retrospective and prospective. The hypothesis is that Benveniste's theoretical attitude concerning reference inaugurates a third tradition of study of this problem, a semiologicalenunciative tradition, which resembles the logical-grammatical tradition and the rhetoricalhermeneutic tradition in some aspects but differs from them in others. This paper aims to present and discuss possible aspects of the relationship between the linguists Ferdinand de Saussure and Émile Benveniste. Using the idea of encounters proposed by Normand (2009), we briefly explain elements of the lives of these authors that contribute to thinking about their work. Moreover, it is intended to highlight mainly two multiple theoretical moments in which the authors theoretically meet: the propositions around general linguistics and the work with various languages. It is expected, with this, to demonstrate the proximity between the two linguists, Saussure and Benveniste, who never met physically but whose intellectual encounter is notorious, undeniable, and transformative of the directions of Linguistics. The affinity between language (singular) and languages (plural) has always been esteemed in General Linguistics. In this context, man emerges as an element of profound reflection, both for linguists and for anthropologists. This article seeks to contribute for this discussion by analyzing some propositions of Ferdinand de Saussure, the father of modern linguistics, regarding this plurality of languages, important for the construction of "language" as a singular entity (and already analyzed to exhaustion). For this purpose, the present discussions in the Conferences of Geneva, conducted in 1891 and available in the Writings in General Linguistics, are analyzed, in addition to making a brief comparison of the content of the Conferences with some passagesof the Course in General Linguistics, from 1916. Finally, it is concluded that Saussure's contributions exposed in the Conferences point to evidence of an anthropological view of language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
