| On the twenty-fifth anniversary of the magazine Disegnare. Idee, Immagini I'd like to briefly tell you the story of why we decided to publish the magazine in the early eighties. As we all know the Roman School of Drawing was founded in conjunction with the Faculty of Architecture. Several important masters taught at the school: Vincenzo Fasolo, Fausto Vagnetti, followed by Luigi Vagnetti, Gaspare de Fiore and many other talented draughtsmen and teachers, for example Angelo Marinucci, an excellent draughtsman but above all a talented watercolourist.

The use of digital devices in education is increasing. The literature, however, reveals a disadvantage of digital compared to paper in performing specific learning tasks, in particular text comprehension, which is probably sustained by a different cognitive load and a tendency to use digital for superficial and fast reading. The present study investigates possible differences between paper and digital text comprehension in children of school-age by analysing the role of Executive Functions (EF) as mediating factors in performance. 175 children in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade were assessed for text comprehension in the two modes and assessed with EF tests. The results show that there are no differences between digital and paper text comprehension. However, dividing the sample into children with low and children with high levels of text comprehension, the former group is seen to benefit from digital compared to the latter group, which shows an opposite trend. Furthermore, the low performers score worse than high performers in the EF measures which show a mediating role between performance level and differences between paper and digital modes in text comprehension. The present study has important educational implications for the use of digital devices in education.

This study investigates the relationship between School Library and Students’ achievement on a population sample of 9896 Schools. Many international researches confirmed the importance of the School Library for the Students learning. Recently the IEA PIRLS survey has revealed a positive relationship between the Reading comprehension performance and the size of the School Library collection. In this paper, we verify the relation between the results of INVALSI tests in Italian and Mathematics - on school grades 5,8,10 - with the presence and functioning of the School Library. The information on the School Library comes from the School Questionnaire compiled by the School Principal in the course of the Self-evaluation Report. The analysis confirm a positive relationship in each school grade and in both subjects of investigation.

The Statement of International Cataloguing Principles (2009, under revision) by IFLA declares to be "applicable to online catalog and beyond as its primary objective with respect to the text of 1961." In fifty years the technology changed so much in depth the bibliographic universe and the possible ways to describe it, it was necessary to update the founding principles of the catalog (not the catalog!). Similarly, it is assumed that the skills required to cataloguer has to be changed with respect to this despite the recent past. It is easy to think of how many new knowledge are essential today, such as software for cataloging. Instead, we can say that some first necessary skills now they are not more? We create granular data and related that they may be reused by Google: just about data or cataloging is also something else? The use of our data on the local and global at the same time also as formative consequences door cataloger? You can think of, so to speak, of the catalogs regardless of their reality, yesterday's paper and bits today? You can even talk about data regardless of how and where will they appear?

- Abstract
Ferenc's rooms: wallpaper and new planning. The volume presents the results of an open call aimed at valorising the small studio decorated by a sophisticated tapestry that hosted Franz Liszt during his extended stays in Villa d'Este. The genius loci of the Villa and the experience of the Hungarian musician are the themes inspiring the fourteen artistic proposals selected which were presented in an exhibition designed for the aristocratic rooms of the site. The project, therefore, explores the expressive environment potential of wallpaper in the 21st century, viewed as an ancient and new medium at the same time, investigating the renewed relationship between the handcrafted tradition, the immaterial cultural heritage and contemporary creativity.

Library catalogs automation and bibliographic data management in electronic format have almost half a century of life. In recent years the media through which the information is spread, the conceptual models that describe the bibliographic universe, the structures of the data, the cataloging rules that provide guidance and constraints on the content of the data have changed. Through a diachronic overview of the evolution of the tool we still call OPAC, the purpose of this paper is to outline the state of the art and the future of library catalogs, focussing in particular on opening the catalog and data which contains the semantic web environment.

The Department of Musicology houses a collection of nearly 1000 piano rolls. Most of them were produced by FIRST, the most important company of perforated rolls at the time, which had its headquarters in Cremona. This collection is one among the widest collections of FIRSTS's production concentrated today in a single institution. Together with the publishers' catalogs, this fund is an essential basis to reconstruct and appreciate the importance of the Cremonese company. To ensure its conservation a digitization project (in collaboration with AMMI) has been planned, as well as a cataloging action. The cataloging of the piano rolls requires a preliminary study on descriptive criteria. The aim is to examine themorphological peculiarities of the carriers for the mechanical music and to establish a correct and complete description within the cataloging current rules. In fact, they do not explicitly cover this type of material: it is therefore necessary to propose appropriate amendments to them.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Gabii through its Artefacts brings together 15 papers written by as many scholars on objects from the excavations of the town of Gabii undertaken by three different international teams since 2007: The Gabii Project, which is a primarily US-based group of scholars; a team from the Musée du Louvre; and a team from the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” collaborating with the Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Roma. The contributions aim to consider artefacts outside the ceramic report and small finds catalogue format in terms of both the wide variety of materials and the possibilities for unique individual stories. Objects ranging from the pre-Roman to Imperial periods are examined using a mix of approaches, making an effort to be sensitive to excavation context and formation processes. Approaches include archaeometric, spatial, and statistical analyses, artefact life history approaches, and archival approaches. Thus, different scales of analysis are also undertaken: in some cases individual objects are focused on, in others whole classes or assemblages. The papers ultimately share the common goal of offering new stories about the inhabitants of Gabii told through their artefacts. Together they enliven the Gabines'behaviours: their concerns about personal and economic security and status, their productive activities and trade connections to other towns, their aesthetic and ritual concerns, their political affiliations and aspirations.

Forty management professors stuck at home by the Covid-19 pandemic meet online for a virtual aperitif during the months of lockdown. What will they say to each other? What will they talk about? About distance learning, ongoing research and papers, new learning in their field of investigation, digital discoveries? No, none of this. After all, they too are human beings and with their families, their children or grandchildren, socialization for them ends up consecrating themselves at the table, whether they are foreigners or Italians. Because the manifestation of love through food is a very ancient and precious tradition. And so, in this strange suspended and rarefied atmosphere, it is not the theories or formulas that are exchanged among the participants of the event, but the recipes that everyone is preparing in the kitchen. Forty recipes for quarantine. A set of delicious dishes that arise from a “funny quarantine.”

- Abstract

This is a book of architectural reasonings which, like all those on teaching of design/composition, marks the ‘'eternal return of the equal”, that forces each generation of teachers to confront themselves with the circular infinity of time to capture the architectural theme and take possession of it. The specific way in which Zattera, Beccu and Menghini have chosen to take this path, has been to identify examples of museums of different authors of different times, and to interprete them with their own categories of architectural design, giving them to the students as possible thematic and formal itinenaries. - Abstract
| This paper illustrates a new method used to portray and view the most famous drawing in the world: The Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci. A successful workflow of acquisition, processing, visualisation and 3D digital fruition of the paper support aimed at enhancing perceptive realism and achieve a visual detail of a hundredth of a millimetre. The system highlights details of the drawing and specific features that would otherwise be invisible to the naked eye. The workflow developed by the authors is a rapid definition model of digital drawing models intended to be used in new studies as well as provide spectacular ways in which they can be enjoyed, communicated and disseminated.

Moles Martis, il turpe sepulcrum di Tarpea e la Luna dell'Arx di Francesco Marcattili (con un'appendice di Paola Paolucci), pp. 7-34 Through a re-examination of several literary sources and the iconographic documentation available, the paper aims to propose a reinterpretation of the legend of Tarpeia - a figure linked to the origins of Rome - and to explain her ties with the Mars of the Capitolium, Moles Martis and the Moon of Arx. In the tale of the traitor of the Capitoline hill and in her rehabilitation for propaganda purposes, traces of ancient ritual practices have been identified, connected with the reditus of the army and the recovery/reutilization of enemy weapons. Like the tomb of Titus Tatius on the Aventine hill, also the tomb of Tarpeia speaks of death and expiation. However, if on the Aventine there were laurels to guarantee the purification of soldiers by means of the blood of their dead enemies, on the Capitoline Arx the essential ingredient of the ritual seems to have been the violent hurling and the accumulation of weapons, especially shields. Archaeological investigations, directed by the Sovraintendenza ai Beni Culturali di Roma Capitale in the years 1998-2000 and 2004-2007, brought to light a large portion of a third hemicycle of the Forum of Augustus. This structure, located alongside the north-western porch and to the south of the already known hemicycle, was almost totally destroyed by the construction of the colonnaded courtyard of the Forum of Trajan. In this paper is proposed a new reconstructive hypothesis for the southern part of the Forum and for the width of the new hemicycle. New investigations show that the structure is bigger than argued at the time of the discovery, and, because of this, it is impossible to imagine that a porch stood on the southern side of the of the Forum of Augustus. In 2006, an excavation carried out by the Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Roma in the chamber of the Templum Pacis brought to light four new fragments of marble maps. These fragments are not part of the severan Forma Urbis, but scraps of a stone workshop working in the area at least since the reconstruction of its buildings after the fire of the 192 AD. This workshop made probably marble-copies of pieces of the cadastral relief of Rome, which were used as official administrative acts. The finds described in the followed paper can be identified as documents of this kind. Gli impianti di scale del Foro di Traiano di Elisabetta Bianchi, Roberto Meneghini (con appendici di Marie D. Jackson, Antonella Lumacone, Roberto Serafini, Gianluca Primi), pp. 77-118. The recent archaeological excavations (1998-2000) have brought to light a large portion of the Forum of Trajan that allowed for a detailed reconstructive plan of the complex. This study analyses the remains of the stairways system confirming the already assumed multistoried structure of the complex in several areas. A set of staircases inside the Basilica Ulpia (A-A1/B-B1) has been re-analyzed together with two large staircases, built on supporting arches close to the Libraries. These staircases led the way up from the outside to the upper level of the courtyard of the Trajan's Column and from there to the matronea of the Basilica (C-C1). Furthermore, the presence of a pair of stairs has been ascertained. These led to the upper floor from the southern wall of the square (D-D1). Finally, four spiral staircases have been identified as serving maintenance purposes for the complex's wooden roofing system, these were placed in pairs at the ends of the two hemicycles of the porticoed square (E-E1/F-F1). - Abstract

- Abstract
- Abstract
[Dino Gasperini, Assessore alle Politiche Culturali e Centro Storico] Chaim Koppelman was only nine when he first drew a profile of Napoleon in his geography book. It wasn't supposed to be a portrait, just a drawing by a talented child who puts down on paper things that strike him or arouse his curiosity, without wondering too much about them. That casual drawing is still there, apparently forgotten in the bustle of a lifetime, artistic and otherwise, that had soon begun to mark out its course. Like all passions, though, that profile of Napoleon caused subterranean reflections to ripen in Koppelman, bringing new stimuli and works to light and to his art. And even a “new” Napoleon, freed from being an actual historical figure and becoming an icon and symbol in the collective consciousness. And, perhaps still more significant, a flesh-and-blood personification of the battles that lead to the construction of harmony. Koppelman focuses attention on the Napoleon who's in every one of us. “All beauty is a making one of opposites, and the making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves,” proclaimed the manifesto of Eli Siegel's Aesthetic Realism, a movement that Koppelman joined in the 1940s. This was Napoleon's innermost desire: to bring democracy, but at the same time to assert his own authority. And it's also the innermost desire of our inner Napoleon: to assert the “we” while flaunting our own “I.” Koppelman's research started from his desire to illustrate this discovery in paintings, pastels, etchings, linoleum prints and watercolors, playing with his results. Napoleon observes the artistic horizon over the centuries and even looks at himself in a mirror, not to find answers but perhaps to raise questions about the true nature of humans and their desires. - Abstract
L'arte rupestre nella penisola e nelle isole italiane presents the proceedings of IFRAO 2018 – Session 2H: Rock Art in the Italian Peninsula and Islands: Issues about the Relation between Engraved and Painted Rocks, Symbols, Mountain Areas and Paths. The various papers present a remarkable synthesis of current knowledge on inscriptions, engraved and painted, on the rock walls of the Italian peninsular. In recent years an increasing amount of data has been collected, characterized by a regional and peculiar iconography with some common elements: anthropomorphic figures, weapons, daggers, halberds and other several symbols, all stylised. A peculiarity of this research is the site's locations within small shelters, inappropriate for habitation or in places suitable for supervising mountain and territory roads; this research demonstrates similarities to that carried out in the Western Mediterranean Sea. A new subject of relates to the possible interpretations of some engravings as solar and stellar symbols related to the measuring of time and to economic, daily and seasonal factors.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
The series Ancient Cities presents its second volume which contains the proceedings of the conference: Amministrazione, vita politica, cultura e società della città antica, held at Potenza on June 2018. The papers brings in-depth investigation of some relevant problems of the Greco-Roman cities from the archaic age to the late imperial age. The themes, particularly interesting and widely discussed in the international scholarly panorama, are therefore focused on the political and administrative life of the Greco-Roman cities, with attention also to international diplomatic relations. The ancient city was a place of culture and trade, the site of intense political debate, with spaces for meetings and discussions. The volume contains 8 contributions by Italian and foreign scholars, who have investigated some of the most interesting and in some ways problematic aspects of the ancient cities of the Greek and Roman world.

- Abstract
Sicily and Italy in the Odyssey The article reviews the arguments for seeing Temese (Od. I 184) and Alybas (XXIV 304) as Italian place names, and considers the significance of the Odyssey's being bookended by putative references to fictitious voyages to and from Italy by Mentes and Eperitos respectively. Sicilians, moreover, cut intriguingly different figures in the poem. On the one hand, the Suitors think of Sicilians as ruthless slave-dealers (XX 383). On the other, Laertes relies on a devoted Sicilian woman (XXIV 211-12), and Odysseus pretends to a fervent guest-friendship with a man from Sicania (XXIV 303-14). The positive attitude of Odysseus and Laertes (and, by implication, of the poem's narrator and narratee) towards Sicilians contrasts very suggestively with the negative attitude of the Suitors. It is, finally, suggested that Odysseus'encounters with monsters and man-eaters (the Cyclopes, the Laestrygonians, Skylla and Charbdis, Kirke) may already have been situated in Sicily and Italy prior to the Odyssey, and that the poet of the Odyssey purposely refrained from situating his monsters there. Thus the Odyssey-poet himself may have pointedly adopted a positive attitude to the heroic-age inhabitants of Sicily that contrasted with the negative attitude prevailing in his tradition. This putative decision not to demonize the inhabitants of Sicily may be the natural concomitant of a desire to show the home-grown Suitors of Ithaca as the real'monsters'of the Odyssey. Scrivere la storia del mondo coloniale greco: concetti, materiali e prospettive The aim of this article is to point out and debate some recent issues on the concept itself of Greek colonization. If this word is submitted to a deep criticism, other terms as diaspora which have been recently employed by scholars to substitute this problematical word sound even more unsatisfying. In the last part, the paper outlines some future directions of the colonial studies, crossing both economical and cultural developements. The present contribution aims to examine the network of relationships between Numana and the Greek world, considering the most recent researches. The chronological frame of reference is the archaic period, which offers a rich and articulated documentation consisting mainly on Attic vases, but also on pottery from other Greek centers. The analysis is mostly carried out on the basis of funerary documentation as well as on the examination of materials linked to their context, in order to investigate their usage as a cultural phenomenon and to understand historical and commercial aspects connected to the acquisition of such products. Pitagora a Crotone? Indizi e suggestioni attraverso la testimonianza dei dati archeologici There are many testimonies provided by various literary sources, albeit later, which ascertain the presence of Pythagoras in Kroton and his choice to establish a school here. However, no material documents provide direct evidence of this presence. Nevertheless, the proposed excursus aims to highlight implicit suggestions or confirmations from which it is possible to infer the reality of that cultural humus certainly capable of guaranteeing, at the turn of the 5th century B.C., the necessary premises for the work of the great samian sophos, whose doctrines were able to spread throughout the...
