SREMSKI Karlovci, Peace of, 1699 ,AUSTRO-Turkish War, 1683-1699 ,AUSTRIAN history ,HUNGARIAN language ,PEACE & society - Abstract
This year marks the 325th anniversary of the signing of the Peace of Sremski Karlovci (January 26, 1699). The peace was a fateful historical event, for it ended decades of continuous civil war in the Kingdom of Hungary, concluded the wars against the Turks begun in 1683, and finally confirmed the liberation of Hungary from Turkish slavery. In the Hungarian language, this peace treaty is traditionally called the Peace of Karlóca. Based on primary historical sources (medieval charters, 16th, 17th and 18th-century geographical maps, and descriptive statistics from the 19th century), I prove in the article that the correct name is Peace of Karom. Focusing on the Hungarian diaspora in Sydney, Australia, this paper finds that the key to preserving the Hungarian identity of emigrants and their descendants is maintaining and cultivating Hungarian traditions. Some institutions and organizations, such as Hungarian schools and the Hungarian Scout Association in Exteris, can help in this regard. To examine this topic, I conducted a pilot study asking the following questions: (1) What are the main elements of Hungarian identity in the diaspora? and (2) What is the main role that Hungarian scouts and other organizations play in preserving Hungarian identity? In the first part of the research, the most prominent people of the Hungarian diaspora in Sydney, Australia were interviewed. The interviews showed that Hungarian scouting plays a crucial role in the survival of Hungarian culture and community, which was reflected linguistically too. Subsequently, I conducted a questionnaire survey, whose results also confirmed that scouting is both an element of and a tool for Hungarian identity construction. Some key elements of identity, according to the respondents—language, culture, holidays, and community—are clearly included in scouting. The results also suggest that support for Hungarian emigrant organizations can be an effective way to maintain national identity. constantinovits.kinga.katalin@hallgato.ppke.hu

The study treats with the development of the Institute of History within the Faculty of Arts of the Attila József University of Szeged (later and nowadays the University of Szeged), consisting originally of six history departments (later eight) dealing with different historical periods. The Institute of History was established in 1997 after its operational and organizational rules had been accepted. The governing body is the Council of the Institute, with two members of each department and the representatives of the students. The chosen and appointed Head of the Institute – at first the author of this article between 1997–2000 and later others – directs and coordinates the teaching and research activities of the Institute with the help of the Council. The Institute of History operates a Hungarian language journal (Acta Historica) and a foreign language yearbook (Chronica). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ferenc Kazinczy worked as an inspector between 1786-1791, and from 1788 onward, he became the editor of the first Hungarian literary periodical Magyar Museum. The two careers developed in parallel, so it is worth analyzing them in this context, with special regard to his view on the Hungarian language. First and foremost, this study is concerned with how the consequences of the Language Edict of King Joseph II, and the change in the linguistic standard affected the inspector and editor programs of Kazinczy. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the use of Hungarian language in dental education in Romania. The first part briefly describes the dental aspects of the first Hungarian-language Transylvanian medical book. The second part presents the history of dental education in Transylvania, from the very beginning till now, especially concentrating on the usage of Hungarian language. The university-level dental education began in 1890 at the Royal Hungarian Francis Joseph University of Sciences in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca) as an optional discipline for medical students. Between 1913–1919 and 1940–1945 in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca), the university provided undergraduate and postgraduate dental training in Hungarian; however, it was moved to Szeged between 1921–1940. After several name changes, it became Bolyai University of Sciences, and in 1945, its Faculty of Medicine, with Hungarian teaching language, was transferred to Marosvásárhely (Tirgu-Mures). Here, following the educational reform in 1948, it became the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy of Marosvásárhely (Tirgu-Mures), and the Faculty of Dentistry was first established, and then, ceased to exist between 1951 and 1960. in 1962, dental training in Hungarian was replaced by bilingual education: the lectures were in Hungarian and Romanian, but practical activities were held only in Romanian. With regards to the teaching language, the situation remains even in the present; however, in the meantime, after a change of regime in Romania, the university was merged with another one, which resulted in several name changes. In 2014, a dental education in English was introduced, resulting in all teaching activities being held in English. Here, we are presenting our individual thoughts on importance of the education using the mother tongue and the preservation of the Hungarian dental terminology, as well as the impact of Romanian and English expressions. In summary, the only place in Romania where (theoretical) dental education is provided in Hungarian language, is in the Faculty of Dental Medicine at the George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology of Targu-Mures.

As the above title indicates, because of the publication schedule of Hungarian Cultural Studies this bibliography straddles 2019-2020, covering the period since the publication in Fall of 2019 of last year’s bibliography in this journal. Each year’s bibliography may also be supplemented by earlier items, which were retrieved onlyrecently. Although this bibliography series can only concentrate on English-language items, occasional items of particular interest in other languages may be included. DUALISM ,SECONDARY schools ,HUNGARIAN language - Abstract
During the decades of Dualism less than half of the Romanian secondary school students in Hungary attended Hungarian language secondary schools. Most of them were children of intellectual families, and most of the Romanian national middle class had learned Hungarian in Hungarian secondary schools. However, many of them were born peasant, and the Hungarian secondary schools could convince many students to enrol who otherwise wouldn't have pursued higher education with the promise of learning the Hungarian language. This paper examines the questions pertaining to this topic from two perspectives: based on education history sources and on works of the Romanian memoire literature. Besides the self-legitimising, "Hungarianising" rhetoric of education policy, another discriminatory attitude can be identified on the Hungarian side, and it is shown through examples how the two mixed in teacher communication and the internal regulations of the schools. On the other hand, Romanian parents had ambivalent reactions to the possible ideological implications of Hungarian education. The study showcases how Hungarian secondary schools - primarily the state institutions on the non-Hungarian peripheries - attempted to close the gap between Hungarian students and the large number of students who didn't speak Hungarian, and how educational considerations intersected with the Hungarian state's goal of self-representation. As a final point the teaching of the Romanian language as a facultative subject in Hungarian secondary schools is also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Until now, linguists dealing with student language use have not been able to clearly define what exactly the term student language means: the full usage of language by school-age young people, or the use of language related to school life, including the names of educational units, subjects, teaching aids and grades. However, they overwhelmingly agree that relatively identical attributes characterize students' language use within the borders of the country. The state languages of the individual countries have an increased influence on the Hungarian language outside Hungary's borders, and this influence affects the students' language as well. Research on this subject has consistently shown that students' language use is not free from contact effects either. Within the framework of the present paper, based on the results of sociolinguistic research, I try to examine the extent to which the effect of the state language appears in the student language in the narrower sense, among students studying in Hungarian higher education in Transcarpathia. Hungarian language ,sociative and comitative constructions ,derivational and inflectional suffixes ,image schema ,pragmatics ,Hungary ,DB901-999 ,Language and Literature - Abstract
The paper analyzes the various uses of the Hungarian -stUl (‘together with’, ‘along with’) sociative (associative) suffix (later in the paper referred to simply as “sociative”), as in the example gyerekestül. As opposed to its comitative-instrumental suffix -vAl (‘with’), the -stUl suffix cannot express instrumentality. The paper aims to demonstrate the difference in use between the comitative-instrumental -vAl and the -stUl suffix in contemporary Hungarian, and to illuminate the historical emergence of the suffix as well as its grammatical status. It is argued on the basis of Antal (1960) and Kiefer (2003) that -stUl cannot be analyzed as an inflectional case suffix (such as the -vAl suffix, or -ed, -ing, or the plural in English), but should rather be categorized as a derivational suffix (such as English dis-, re-, in-, -ance, -able, -ish, -like, etc.). The paper also tries to shed light on the hypothetical cognitive psychological distinction between the comitative and the sociative. It is suggested that the sociative is based on the amalgam image schema which is derived from the LINK schema of the comitative. The ironical reading of the sociative is an implicature in the sense of Grice (1989) and Sperber and Wilson (1987). Psycholinguistic experimentation is proposed to follow up on the mental representation of the sociative.

- Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COLLECTION management (Libraries) , *LIBRARY special collections , *HUNGARIAN language , *PAMPHLETS , *TWENTIETH century ,HUNGARIAN history - Abstract
The collections of the Library of HAS have been established at different times and in a variety of ways. One of the most exciting centuries of European and particularly Hungarian history left a very special and considerably differing imprint on these collections. Most of the materials in the Collection of Early Books had been donated by three major patrons: József Teleki, György Ráth and Ferenc Vigyázó. The latter two collected obsessively the Hungary-related prints still to be found in Europe at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to the wealth of Hungarica materials (from the point of lan- guage, territory or persons), a unique value of the collection is represented by the pamphlet collection dealing with Hungary. The pamphlets originate mainly from German-speaking countries, and these materials constitute a rich resource of Hungarian history, their importance equals that of the Apponyi Collection in the National Széchényi Library. This contribution is a Hungarian translation of a conference paper on the Hungarian Public-Private Partnership at International Academy of Comparative Law Congress 2010 in Washington D. C. The first part emphasizes the intellectual and historical background of the concept of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in the different legal cultures (e.g. American, English, French, German examples etc.). The appearance of the concept of PPP was very late in the Hungarian legal literature. The second part analyses the award of PPPs. The third part of the study shows the performance of PPPs. The fourth part deals with the remedies of PPPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HUNGARIAN language ,HORTICULTURE ,AGRICULTURE ,FARM management ,GARDENING - Abstract
Even though in 16-17th-century Transylvania, in the years of the late Renaissance, the so-called 'high Renaissance' was dominant, it was highly bound by ancient tradition. It also took a couple of decades for modern horticultural expert literature to evolve. This is proven by Nadanyis horticultural specialist book translation. Janos Nadanyi of Koros-Nadany (1643-1707) was a Presbyterian pastor and teacher who translated the 16th-century book written by Mizaldus (or Mizauld), in which the author published the collected horticultural works of ancient authors. Although Nadanyi fulfilled Anna Bornemissza's commission, who was the wife of Mihaly Apafi, Prince of Transylvania, by that time the original French work had become outdated. Due to the publication of the book by Mizaldus, however, the influence of classical authors were perpetuated. Of course, the Transylvanian Presbyterian pastor being neither competent nor interested in floriculture was bound to textual fidelity in his translation. But those who selected the book in good faith and ordered its translation did not notice that in the meantime farming methods had changed and readers were more interested in rational, updated books and calendars such as the Hungarian horticultural specialist book by Janos Lippay. Lippays book and Nadanyi s translation were poles apart, they were not to be compared, and probably had one thing in common: they both enriched 17th-century Hungarian professional literature and the scope of horticulture. Lippay produced a practical volume based on his own experience with some references to Europe, which served as a guide for horticulture, gardening, agriculture and effective farm management. In Transylvania the lack of specialised textbooks of this kind was realised, nevertheless the translation of obsolete books dating back to the ancients, with no focus on farming and gardening, continued. Thus, this volume had became something of a rarity (only 75 copies were issued in 1669), while Lippays book was widely used in Transylvania as a guide for the improvement of gardening on noble estates. Lippay s horticultural book (1664-1667) was more critical, recent, more comparative and much more contemporary than Janos Nadanyi s Transylvanian horticultural specialist book translation (1669). The National Széchényi Library organised a large-scale temporary exhibition about the memories of the early written Hungarian language. As a plus, in October 2009 the library launched a multimedia service entitled Memories of the Hungarian language. The article presents first of all the related webpage, and also calls attention to the relationship between the exhibition and internet-based publishing, as well as to the issues evolving in this context. The webpage serves the purposes of both research and education by its two, graphically different but at the same time interrelated levels. It is the aim of the so-called research interface to publish the list of significant memories selected by experts, the list of their locations, the digitised versions of several language memories, the list of research-oriented text editions, the increasing number of digitised volumes, as well as selected special bibliographies. The essays and descriptions can be accessed by a mouse click from the pages containing the lists. In addition, the service presents several interpretations of interest, such as works of art and music inspired by language memories. The other interface serving education and the general public includes the most important language memories. This narrower selection of 16 texts is complemented by descriptions, audio materials and short films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

REFORMED Church ,STATE of siege ,CLERGY ,WORLD War II ,SERMON (Literary form) ,DIOCESES ,HUNGARIAN language - Abstract
The study continues to present the life of the Transylvanian Reformed Church after the Vienna Award (several studies on this topic have been published in this journal in 2008). The laws regarding state of siege were applied on Romania during the whole period of the 2WW. Citizens' rights to free assembling, traveling or to use their own language were severely restricted in these years. These restrictions have caused the Reformed Church of Transylvania a great disadvantage, because church-life was almost diminished. Only regular sermons and no other types of meetings could be held, pastors were not allowed to visit their followers, no charity or educational events could be organized, and even administrative meetings were totally banned. Regulations regarding the traveling of citizens resulted that dean could not visit the pastors of their dioceses, and the vicar of the church had also his serious mobility restrictions. Hungarian language has been banned from official and phone conversations, it could not been used in regular mail, or in denomination of localities. The laws regarding state of siege have diminished pluralism and democracy and made place for Antonescu's fascist dictatorship, which has also affected the Hungarian population of Romania and the Reformed Church. The hierarchy of ontologies based on generic relation is described by exact logical declarations. However, generic hierarchy itself depends on philosophical views and intuition. In other words, depending on aspect and intuition it can be chosen different conceptual hierarchy. We show that in generic hierarchy of top-level concepts there are not really unsolvable differences. Which means that the second expected consequence will not be realized. Consequently: however big are the differences between the special hierarchies of the ontologies, by necessity the basis of the apparently different hierarchies is the same concept system. For comparison we used top-level concepts of universal Hungarian Thesaurus (Köztaurus) as a basis. From the results of the comparison it can be concluded that the Hungarian adaptation of the internationally developed ontologies has no significant difficulties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The most important requirement for the use of Hungarian geographical names is that in texts written in Hungarian language, the Hungarian names of geographical objects should be used. Of course, if an object does not have a Hungarian name and no Hungarian name can be derived from the original name, then the foreign equivalent should be used. Unfortunately, the Hungarian geographical and cartographic literature and the organs using geographical names (media, official communications, transportation) do not always take into consideration this requirement, consequently the use of Hungarian geographical names is inconsistent. This negligence unnecessarily limits the use of Hungarian names, or in the worst case, the Hungarian equivalents might fade into oblivion. The use of Hungarian geographical names needs to be based on the Hungarian name area. Name areas always stretch over the appropriate ethnic area. In the case of Hungarian names, the name area and the ethnic area extend significantly beyond the national borders. For this reason, the use of Hungarian geographical names can be justified even in areas that are very far from the borders of the current state, and even if the existence of the Hungarian names might only be known to researchers and cartographers. This article deals with the conceptual and practical aspects of the use of Hungarian geographical names, and also presents the various parts of the Hungarian name area. The extent of the use of Hungarian geographical names can be connected to political periods. During several periods, the use was subject to the principle of state centralism. The second part of the study traces the correspondences between Hungarian cartographic names and the appropriate political trends from 1867 to date. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study originally forms the 3rd chapter of the PhD thesis of the author under the title "Articles of Hungarian periodical publications in Hungarian and international bibliographical databases", defended in 2004. The study primarily deals with Hungarian databases and only examines the representation in international databases within a limited scope. The databases available within Dialog and including records relevant to Hungary are examined from several aspects. Based on data from May 2002 and December 2003, the databases containing records in Hungarian language are reviewed in a breakdown by scientific fields. The data are complemented with additions from the past one and a half year. Looking at the 8 most important databases taken from these two years respectively, the study examines the place of records in Hungarian language in the ranking of languages, and the place of records published in Hungary in the ranking of countries. Based on the level of representation of the journals of Akadémiai Kiadó in Dialog databases, the article aims to throw light on differences between the national and international cataloguing practices and draws conclusions regarding the necessity of national cataloguing. This article is the edited version of a contribution to a Hungarian conference on professional languages. The author is not a linguist by profession, but was the founding editor of a Hungarian electronic journal, has gathered the word-set of informatics for the Hungarian-English and English-Hungarian dictionaries and participated in terminology standardization. His principles related to the transfer of professional terminology are the following: to translate the words if it is possible with beauty, else forming a proper Hungarian word. When this process is unsuccessful, the original (English) word has to be written according to the Hungarian pronunciation. The recent practical process is illustrated with a number of examples together with other linguistic effects. Several conclusions are drawn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ARCHAEOLOGY , *HUNGARIAN language , *PUBLISHING , *MUSEUMS - Abstract
In Hungary, scientific archaeological activities started in the 19th century. Its development was fostered by the organisation of the country's scientific life, the educational reform, and the birth of scientific publishing. The author gives a definition of archaeology and presents its research areas, secondary sciences and the most important publications in Hungarian language. The scientific activity of a few famous Hungarian archaeologists (Flóris Róme, Imre Henszlmann, János Érdy) is also summarised. The formation of the Archaeological Committee of the Hungarian Scientists' Society, then the launch of the Archaeological Journal in 1868 were also important milestones in the history of Hungarian archaeology. It was the journal that radically improved the public awareness of both archaeology and the collection of antiques. At its early stages, the journal's main mission was the promotion of archaeology. It was informing readers about national excavations, about museum developments, but also about the most important international research activities. Later, in addition to its main focus on historical monuments, it expanded its areas of interests to the history of fine arts and applied arts. The initial promoting feature was lessened and the journal gradually became a forum for experts. It is also the journal's merit that by the end of the first period of Hungarian archaeology (end of the 19th century), the sub-disciplines were set out, the Hungarian terminology was born and archaeology became an academic discipline taught at universities. The John von Neumann Digital Library and Multimedia Centre has been building a web-based catalogue of Hungarian articles published on the Internet since 1998. Documents by Hungarian authors, available on Hungarian servers and in Hungarian language are processed in the database. Besides the bibliographical cataloguing, the full text of the documents is also made available. The database called WebKat.hu contained 20 000 records at the time of its launch, today this number is ten times higher. The collection interest has also expanded, covering publications by foreign authors translated into Hungarian and selected documents hosted in neighbouring countries. The article also gives a few search tips for basic search. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hungarians living in Slovenia give 0.5% of the population of the Slovenian Republic. The constitution allows them to use their mother tongue, still the preservation and use of the Hungarian language, the maintenance of Hungarian publishing, cultural life and arts is vital for the Hungarian minority living in about 30 settlements near the River Mura. The study outlines the history of book publishing in the Mura region from the 1960s till now, the problems of the cultural life, and presents the work of cultural institutions, organisations and publishers. It gives a good example of the richness of Hungarian publishing in the Mura region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The University of Jyväskylä's Hungarian Studies Program celebrated its twentieth anniversary with an international conference, held on March 15, 2011. The event was opened by Rector Matti Manninen, who at that time served as the Vice-Rector of the university. The conference participants included people from six European countries who not only commended Jyväskylä's Hungarian Studies Program, but took accounts of the history of the main international institutions of Hungarian Studies abroad as well, devoting special attention to the developments in the last two decades after the political transition in Hungary. The conference proceedings, as a collection of papers by the leading figures of the field, contain significant contributions to the history of international Hungarian Studies. In the year of the publication of our proceedings, Professor Tuomo Lahdelma, the founder of the University of Jyväskylä's Hungarian Studies Program, celebrated his 60th birthday, making this book a Festschrift for him. The volume includes papers in Hungarian, English, and Finnish.
