Abstract

This issue deals with verb-object complementation, a complex and controversial but important topic, in particular in connection with the teaching and learning of a second language. The articles are a response to a long debate about the harmonization of grammatical terminology used in schools and the simplification of grammar for students. The subject is of special importance for achieving a better integration of methods used in early language learning. The articles include the following: "Don't Complements Only Complement the Verb? Abstract

Speech conditions of emission can result in influences on the speaker, leading to dramatic changes in the speaker's speech production. However, most studies performed on the "speaking styles" restrict their observations to very contrasted situations and compare so-called "spontaneous" speech to the "laboratory" speech. This study analyzed Spanish productions of a single speaker. Three situations with gradual involvement of the speaker in the communication process were studied by means of a new methodology that assessed the degree of organization in each speaking style, as initiated by previous analysis of French-speaking subjects. Abstract

A study, presented here in two volumes and entirely in French, investigated the usefulness of introducing different varieties of Spanish in the classroom to improve listening comprehension skills, and the capacity of students to understand language variations. The experiment was conducted during two quarters at the University of Laval (Quebec), within four Spanish classes. The two experimental groups contained 17 and 21 students; control groups contained 16 and 22 students. Experimental groups were exposed to Spanish language varieties during classroom instruction, and the control groups were exposed to standard usage only. Results indicated definitively that the experimental groups showed broader comprehension skills, with attitudes toward Spanish language learning remaining positive. The first volume of the study describes the research methodology (hypothesis, theoretical framework, procedures, results, conclusions), and the second volume is devoted to the pedagogical material and measurement instruments used, and to the varied analyses performed on results. Abstract

This glossary is designed for users seeking to further understanding in the field of vocational training in the European Union. It was compiled by vocational training experts who were responsible for the contributions from their own countries and collated results. Contributions from individual countries have been written by the experts or compiled from various sources assembled by European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training. The body of the glossary consists of 282 numbered main entries. Each main entry is divided into nine parts, one for each of these languages: Spanish, Danish, German, Greek, English, French, Italian, Dutch, and Portuguese. The terminological entry consists of term(s) in bold type; description (definition, explanation); and note (in italics). Synonyms and quasi synonyms are provided. Instead of a term, a suggested translation may be given. Bold type in the description is used to indicate cross-references. Where terminological entries from more than one Member State occur in the same language entry, they are marked with the abbreviation (in parentheses) of the appropriate country, unless the terms, descriptions, or notes are identical. Nine indexes are provided, one for each language. A bibliography lists sources and experts who can provide relevant information. (YLB)

Abstract

This guide, intended for secondary school teachers of French and Spanish, integrates the teaching of culture and literature with a focus on the child in the target culture. The readings and discussion notes are designed to focus student attention on the target culture through these topics. An introductory section discusses the teaching of culture through literature. The second section provides reading outlines for independent study on specific segments of Francophone and Spanish literature (e.g., African and Antillean, Mexican, etc.). The third section contains a series of short papers on children in literature, and the fourth consists of instructional plans for individual literary works. The fifth and final section lists supplementary instructional aids and materials for each language. An extensive list of references is contained in this section. 16. Sentence Combining in Second Language Instruction. Language in Education: Theory and Practice. No. 31.

Abstract

Second language students may develop writing skills gradually, or they may learn and practice these skills through the use of sentence combining techniques. A study is reported of the consistent use of sentence combining exercises with intermediate language classes at the university level. A total of 325 students enrolled in intermediate French, German, and Spanish classes were included in the experiment. For each language, three classes served as the experimental group and three as the control group. Both control and experimental groups were taught according to a modified audiolingual method and both used the same texts. However, the experimental classes practiced sentence combining and did fewer reading selections. The results supported the claim that consistent sentence combining practice accelerates the acquisition of writing skills and enables the student to use more advanced syntactic patterns sooner than s/he would if left to develop the skill in a less systematic way. The discussion of the experiment includes suggestions for using sentence combining techniques in the classroom. A large number of examples of sentence combining exercises in French, German, and Spanish, arranged in progressive order of difficulty, concludes the volume. (AMH)

17. Teaching Writing in the Foreign Language Curriculum. Language in Education: Theory and Practice, 43.

Abstract

A text-editing approach to composition in the foreign language classroom is set forth. In a 15-week composition course meeting three times each week, students prepare a weekly composition that they will revise after an in-class text-editing session involving several student papers. The third day is devoted to grammar work. Criteria for evaluating student compositions are set forth. Progress in writing skill is enhanced by careful attention to prose style, and students are encouraged to write pastiches. Finally, students are required to keep a journal. Testing and grading are discussed, and situations commonly encountered by teachers are dealt with. Appendices include suggestions for or samples of personal assessment statement, course introduction for a basic French composition course, grammar mid-term, student evaluation of course, prose style analysis checklist, grammar review sheet, sentence-embedding exercises, and tests. Samples of student work (composition outlines, prose style analyses, and pastiches) are presented, most with the actual text-editing corrections of the teacher. The paper concludes with suggested texts for pastiche exercises. (JB)

26. Multilingual Holiday Bulletin Boards for ESL and Multicultural Classrooms.

Abstract

Brief passages are presented that are appropriate for teachers to use on bulletin boards as introductions to seven American holidays. It is noted that learning about American holidays and celebrations is an excellent way for students, especially in English-as-a-Second-Language classes, to gain a better understanding of American culture. However, bulletin boards that are decorated with pictures of unfamiliar themes (Pilgrims, shamrocks, ets.) without adequate explanations are baffling to immigrant students. The holidays summarized include the following: Columbus Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving Day, Martin Luther King's Birthday, Valentine's Day, Saint Patrick's Day, and Memorial Day. Each English-language introduction to these holidays is accompanied by versions in five other languages: Chinese, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese. (LB)

Abstract

This thesaurus is a tool for indexing and retrieving documents and data in the field of education in an international context. Introductory materials include a description of the thesaurus and discussions of its relationship with other thesauri, the thesaurus as an international instrument, its coverage and structure, fields, facets, descriptors and identifiers, terminological choice, linguistic choices, use of the thesaurus, and the fifth edition of the thesaurus and future revisions. Also provided are lists of new descriptors and identifiers and invalid or dead descriptors and identifiers, and a sample entry. The first of four major sections of the thesaurus, "General headings for fields and facets," provides an overview of the classification of terms. The second part,"Alphabetical array of descriptors and identifiers," displays the English terms with their French and Spanish equivalents, together with cross-references, explanatory notes, hierarchical relationships, and place in the classification scheme, i.e., the facet. In the third part, "The faceted array of descriptors and identifiers," the terms are displayed in English by facets which form part of eight broad fields: context, administration and research, instruction, people, growing and learning, content, things, and identifiers. The fourth part, "Permuted list of descriptors and identifiers," is organized alphabetically by key-words out of context. This guide to cultural education as part of foreign language instruction begins with two short theme-setting papers: "Thoughts on Teaching Foreign Culture" by Howard L. A cultural events calendar presents a month-by-month program of activities built around cultural themes: culture games and culture discovery unit, stereotyping, folklore, intra-school class exchange, "corresponding" cultures, art fair, international dinner, foreign language festival, and a trip to a foreign country. Extensive reports on a French meal and a Spanish meal follow. Two complete cultural units conclude the document. The first is entitled "Le role du pain dans la vie francaise" ("The Role of Bread in French Life"). A variety of activities and projects includes a guide to accompanying slides, a "cultoon," and a minidrama. A package of supplemental materials for use in junior and senior high schools at all levels of language learning is designed to acquaint students with the concept of a second language as an adjunct career skill. Seven activities, designed to develop the student's career awareness, are to be completed in English, French, German, or Spanish. The activities include analyzing values that relate to job selection, role-simulation of career situations, and minidramas based on cross-cultural situations. A group on-site interview activity designed to show students the availability of careers in their own community that require the use of a second language is included. Two filmstrips that are available to supplement the material present the possible economic advantages of second-language learning and demonstrate the need for cross-cultural understanding. An orientation booklet contains basic information about careers and foreign languages and a detailed teachers' guide suggests strategies for implementing the activities. Abstract

An investigation was conducted by students in a linguistics seminar which had two parts, a matched-guise questionnaire and a semantic differential questionnaire. The content and results of the latter are presented here. The objective of this part of the study was to determine what attitudes French-speaking Swiss students had toward languages they knew in one way or another. Eighty-seven questionnaires from 53 women and 34 men, aged 16 to 20 years, were analyzed. The languages involved were English, French, Spanish, Swiss German, Italian, and German. On a separate answer sheet for each language, the respondents were asked to score the language on a scale of 1 to 7 according to 13 adjectives. The adjectives fell into three categories--aesthetic-affective, utility, and learning-comprehension. The most striking result is the great diversity in the number of high or low averages from one language to another. Results are presented separately for each language and are tallied and synthesized in a table showing averages. The contrasts are also shown and discussed. (AMH)
