A focusing optics that can provide a sub‐micrometre high‐flux probe for soft X‐ray micrometre‐scale angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is proposed. A monolithic Wolter‐type mirror with a large acceptance, achromatism and small comatic aberration was designed and evaluated. A focused beam size of 0.4 µm (vertical) × 4 µm (horizontal), a high throughput of 59% and a high tolerance of 1.6 mrad to the pitching error were realized at a photon energy of 1000 eV. A Wolter‐type mirror can be practically employed as a stable sub‐micrometre focusing mirror with high throughput in ARPES applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We developed a soft X-ray microscopic imaging system, CARROT, that combines ptychography and fluorescence X-ray microscopy using a total-reflection Wolter mirror illumination system. The system offers advantages such as achromaticity and long working distances, enabling seamless application to a wide wavelength range. We demonstrated high-resolution imaging of cellular structures and sub-micrometer-scale changes induced by drug administration in mammalian cells. We further showcased the capability to seamlessly switch from ptychography measurements to X-ray fluorescence measurements at different wavelengths to map elemental distributions within cells. Our findings suggest that this system can be used for investigating the correlation between intracellular structures and elemental distribution, as well as for multimodal measurements of visible light fluorescence, Raman scattering, and soft X-rays to provide valuable insights into understanding intracellular dynamics. • New imaging system combines soft X-ray ptychography & fluorescence microscopy. • High-resolution images of drug-treated mammalian cells reveal sub-micrometer changes. • Investigation of the correlation between intracellular structures and elemental distribution. An axisymmetric multi-mirror system for neutron and X-ray microscopes is proposed to increase their numerical aperture and collection efficiency. A Wolter type-I mirror is used as the basis of the multi-mirror system at grazing incidence. The addition of an even number of hyperboloid mirrors to the Wolter type-I mirror can satisfy both an equal optical path length and Abbe's sine condition. The numerical aperture increases in proportion to the number of mirrors. The optical parameters of the system with four tandem mirrors are calculated for neutrons and X-rays with a wavelength of 0.4 nm by assuming that the average grazing angle of incidence is 5.4 mrad and the magnification is 10. The inner diameters of the mirrors are limited to <10 mm considering the total length of the optical system. Tolerance of off-axis distance was calculated using a ray-tracing computer simulation. Ray tracing shows that a blur size <14 nm will be possible at an off-axis displacement of 10 μm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A high-resolution soft X-ray emission spectrometer has been developed for site-specific electronic structure analysis of functional materials in the photon energy range of 50–600eV on the in-vacuum undulator beamline BL3U of the UVSOR facility. In order to realize the high detection efficiency without sacrificing the energy resolution to the signal intensity, the present X-ray emission spectrometer adopts an optical design, which was originally adopted in the field of astrophysics such as Chandra X-ray observatory. This new-type X-ray emission spectrometer consists of a Wolter type I mirror, a freestanding transmission grating, and a charge coupled device (CCD) detector, allowing the focusing with 20 times larger acceptance angle (1.5×10−3 sr) than commercially available compact spectrometers with reflection-type gratings such as VG-SCIENTA XES350. The X-ray emission energy resolution of 15–34meV has successfully been achieved in the photon energy of 60–100eV by using a transmission grating with the groove density of 5555lines/mm. An ultra-precision ELID grinding of large stamping dies of Wolter mirror for X-ray telescope was presented in this paper. The large stamping dies (S55C) with confocal paraboloid and hyperboloid was ground by ELID arc-enveloped grinding. In this ELID grinding system, cast iron fiber bonded (CIFB) diamond wheels were controlled by 3-dimentional ways to scan the work-piece and generate required surfaces. Its grinding characteristics such as attainable form accuracy, surface roughness were investigated. Furthermore, some measures to improve form accuracy were discussed and verified such as truing, compensating, and on-machine measuring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
