We present the first results from the Southern Hemisphere Parallax Interferometric Radio Astrometry Legacy Survey: 10 μ as accurate parallaxes and proper motions for two Southern Hemisphere 6.7 GHz methanol masers obtained using the inverse MultiView calibration method. Using an array of radio telescopes in Australia and New Zealand, we measured trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions for the masers associated with the star formation region G232.62+00.99 of π = 0.610 ± 0.011 mas, μ x = −2.266 ± 0.021 mas yr−1, and μ y = 2.249 ± 0.049 mas yr−1, which implies its distance to be d = 1.637 ± 0.029 kpc. These measurements represent an improvement in accuracy by more than a factor of 3 over the previous measurements obtained through Very Long Baseline Array observations of the 12 GHz methanol masers associated with this region. We also measure the trigonometric parallax and proper motion for G323.74–00.26 as π = 0.364 ± 0.009 mas, μ x = −3.239 ± 0.025 mas yr−1, and μ y = − 3.976 ± 0.039 mas yr−1, which implies a distance of d = 2.747 ± 0.068 kpc. These are the most accurate measurements of trigonometric parallax obtained for 6.7 GHz class II methanol masers to date. We confirm that G232.62+00.99 is in the Local Arm and find that G323.74–00.26 is in the Scutum–Centaurus arm. We also investigate the structure and internal dynamics of both masers. We present the spectral and spatial evolution of H2O masers associated with the water fountain source IRAS 18043−2116, found in observations with the Nobeyama 45 m Telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We have found new highest-velocity components of the H2O masers (at the redshifted side V LSR ≃ 376 km s−1 and at the blueshifted side V LSR ≃ −165 km s−1), and the resulting velocity spread of ≃540 km s−1 breaks the speed record of fast jets/outflows in this type of sources. The locations of those components have offsets from the axis joining the two major maser clusters, indicating a large opening angle of the outflow (∼60°). The evolution of the maser cluster separation of ∼2.9 mas yr−1 and the compact (∼0.″2) CO emission source mapped with the Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array suggest a very short (∼30 yr) timescale of the outflow. We also confirmed an increase in the flux density of the 22 GHz continuum source. Context. Recent studies have shown that 6.7 GHz methanol maser flares can be a powerful tool for verifying the mechanisms of maser production and even the specific signatures of accretion rate changes in the early stages of high-mass star formation. Aims. We characterize the spatial structure and evolution of methanol and water masers during a flare of methanol maser emission at 6.7 GHz in the high-mass young stellar object (HMYSO) G24.33+0.14. Methods. Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) was used to image the 6.7 and 12.2 GHz methanol and 22.2 GHz water vapor masers at three epochs guided by monitoring the methanol line with the Torun 32m telescope. The 6.7 GHz maser maps were also obtained with the European VLBI Network (EVN) and Long Baseline Array (LBA) during the flare. The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data were used to find correlations between the 6.7 GHz maser and infrared (IR) fluxes. Results. The 6.7 GHz methanol maser cloudlets are distributed over ~3500 au, and the morphology of most of them is stable although their brightness varies following the course of the total flux density on a timescale of two months. The 12.2 GHz methanol maser cloudlets cover an area an order of magnitude smaller than that of 6.7 GHz emission, and both transitions emerge from the same masing gas. The 22.2 GHz maser cloudlets lie in the central region and show a systematic increase in brightness and moderate changes in size and orientation, together with the velocity drift of the strongest cloudlet during two months of the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observing period. Time lag estimates imply the propagation of changes in the physical conditions of the masing region with a subluminal speed (~0.3c). A tight correlation of IR (4.6 μm) and 6.7 GHz flux densities is found, supporting the radiative pumping model. Proper motion analysis does not reveal any signs of expansion or inflow of the methanol cloudlets within ~6 mas over ~10 yr. Comparison with the 230 GHz Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) data indicates that the methanol masers are distributed in the inner part of the rotating disk, whereas the 22.2 GHz emission traces the compact inner component of the bipolar outflow or a jet structure. The maser morphology in the target is remarkably stable over the course of the flare and is similar to the quiescent state, possibly due to less energetic accretion events that can repeat on a timescale of ~8 yr. We have performed a molecular line search towards the flaring 6.7-GHz masers G 24.33+0.13, and G 359.6−0.24 using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We present spectra of the 6.7-GHz class II methanol and 22.2-GHz water masers towards these sources and provide a comparison with other recent flaring events these sources have experienced. We also detect the fourth example of a 23.4-GHz class I methanol maser and the 11th example of a 4.8-GHz formaldehyde maser towards G 24.33+0.13. Alongside these results, we also observe the previously detected ammonia (3,3) emission and report upper limits on the presence of various other cm-wavelength methanol, ammonia, and OH transitions. We have investigated the evolution of the BL Lac object PKS B1144−379 using the University of Tasmania Ceduna 30-m radio telescope at a frequency of 6.7 GHz and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) data at 8.6 GHz. Variability time-scales associated with two flares detected in 2005 November and 2008 August were derived from long-term variations in total flux density monitored by Ceduna between 2003 and 2011. A kinematic study of the parsec-scale jet of PKS B1144−379 was performed using VLBI data obtained between 1997 and 2018. Quasi-periodic flarings with a period of ∼3–4 yr were observed. This paper reports observations of a 22 GHz water maser 'superburst' in the G25.65+1.05 massive star-forming region, conducted in response to an alert from the Maser Monitoring Organisation (M2O). Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations using the European VLBI Network (EVN) recorded a maser flux density of 1.2 × 104 Jy. The superburst was investipgated in the spectral, structural, and temporal domains and its cause was determined to be an increase in maser path length generated by the superposition of multiple maser emitting regions aligning in the line of sight to the observer. We have investigated the evolution of 12 "water fountain" sources in real time in the accompanying H2O 2o and SiO masers through our FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO-/ H2O 2o-maser Ignitions by Nobeyama Generation) project. It has been confirmed that these masers are excellent probes of new jet blob ejections, acceleration of the material supplied from the parental circumstellar envelope and entrained by the stellar jets yielding its deceleration. Possible periodic variations of the maser emission, reflecting properties of the central dying stars or binary systems, will be further investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Water-fountain nebulae are asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and post-AGB objects that exhibit high-velocity outflows traced by water-maser emission. Their study is important for understanding the interaction between collimated jets and the circumstellar material that leads to the formation of bipolar and/or multi-polar morphologies in evolved stars. Aims. The aim of this paper is to describe the three-dimensional morphology and kinematics of the molecular gas of the water-fountain nebula IRAS 16342−3814. Methods. Data was retrieved from the ALMA archive for analysis using a simple spatio-kinematical model. The software SHAPE was employed to construct a three-dimensional, spatio-kinematical model of the molecular gas in IRAS 16342−3814, and to then reproduce the intensity distribution and position-velocity diagram of the CO emission from the ALMA observations to derive the morphology and velocity field of the gas. Data from CO(J = 1 → 0) supported the physical interpretation of the model. Results. A spatio-kinematical model that includes a high-velocity collimated outflow embedded within material expanding at relatively lower velocity reproduces the images and position-velocity diagrams from the observations. The derived morphology is in good agreement with previous results from IR and water-maser emission observations. The high-velocity collimated outflow exhibits deceleration across its length, while the velocity of the surrounding component increases with distance. The morphology of the emitting region, the velocity field, and the mass of the gas as function of velocity are in excellent agreement with the properties predicted for a molecular outflow driven by a jet. The timescale of the molecular outflow is estimated to be ~70–100 yr. The scalar momentum carried by the outflow is much larger than it can be provided by the radiation of the central star. An oscillating pattern was found associated with the high-velocity collimated outflow. The oscillation period of the pattern is T ≈ 60–90 yr and its opening angle is θop ≈ 2°. Conclusions. The CO (J = 3 → 2) emission in IRAS 16342−3814 is interpreted in terms of a jet-driven molecular outflow expanding along an elongated region. The position-velocity diagram and the mass spectrum reveal a feature due to entrained material that is associated with the driving jet. This feature is not seen in other more evolved objects that exhibit more developed bipolar morphologies. It is likely that the jet in those objects has already disappeared since it is expected to last only for a couple hundred years. This strengthens the idea that water fountain nebulae are undergoing a very short transition during which they develop the collimated outflows that shape the circumstellar envelopes. The oscillating pattern seen in the CO high-velocity outflow is interpreted as due to precession with a relatively small opening angle. The precession period is compatible with the period of the corkscrew pattern seen at IR wavelengths. Water fountains are evolved stars showing early stages of collimated mass-loss during transition from the asymptotic giant branch, providing valuable insight into the formation of asymmetric planetary nebulae. We report the results of multi-epoch VLBI observations, which determine the spatial and three-dimensional kinematic structure of H2O masers associated with the water fountain IRAS 18113−2503. The masers trace three pairs of high-velocity (∼150–300 km s−1) bipolar bow shocks on a scale of 0 |${^{\prime\prime}_{.}}$| 18 (∼2000 au). The expansion velocities of the bow shocks exhibit an exponential decrease as a function of distance from the central star, which can be explained by an episodic, jet-driven outflow decelerating due to drag forces in a circumstellar envelope. Using our model, we estimate an initial ejection velocity ∼840 km s−1, a period for the ejections ∼10 yr, with the youngest being ∼12 yr old, and an average envelope density within the H2O maser region |$n_{\text{H}_2}{\approx }10^{6}$| cm−3. We hypothesize that IRAS 18113−2503 hosts a binary central star with a separation of ∼10 au, revealing novel clues about the launching mechanisms of high-velocity collimated outflows in water fountains. Observations at low frequencies (<8 GHz) are dominated by distinct direction dependent ionospheric propagation errors, which place a very tight limit on the angular separation of a suitable phase referencing calibrator and astrometry. To increase the capability for high precision astrometric measurements an effective calibration strategy of the systematic ionospheric propagation effects that is widely applicable is required. The MultiView technique holds the key to the compensation of atmospheric spatial-structure errors, by using observations of multiple calibrators and two dimensional interpolation. In this paper we present the first demonstration of the power of MultiView using three calibrators, several degrees from the target, along with a comparative study of the astrometric accuracy between MultiView and phase-referencing techniques. MultiView calibration provides an order of magnitude improvement in astrometry with respect to conventional phase referencing, achieving ~100micro-arcseconds astrometry errors in a single epoch of observations, effectively reaching the thermal noise limit. Nowadays, one of the most widespread surface monitoring techniques is synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR), which can be used to measure millimetre-scale deformations by comparing the phase information of satellite images taken a few days to a few years apart. To attain this precision, we need methods that use dozens of radar images and rely on accurate additional information (e.g. satellite positions and meteorological data). There are several limiting spatial and meteorological factors which should be taken into consideration when doing high-precision deformation analysis. Also, due to the relatively high price of these products, a cost optimization is essential before purchasing by taking the above-mentioned aspects into consideration. Here, we give an overview of a new nationwide database intended for this purpose. Background: Delirium and pain are common following hip fracture. Untreated pain has been shown to increase the risk of delirium in older adults undergoing elective surgery. This study was performed to examine the relationship among pain, analgesics, and other factors on delirium in hip fracture patients.Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study at four New York hospitals that enrolled 541 patients with hip fracture and without delirium. Delirium was identified prospectively by patient interview supplemented by medical record review. Multiple logistic regression was used to identify risk factors.Results: Eighty-seven of 541 patients (16%) became delirious. Among all subjects, risk factors for delirium were cognitive impairment (relative risk, or RR, 3.6; 95% confidence interval, or CI, 1.8-7.2), abnormal blood pressure (RR 2.3, 95% CI 1.2-4.7), and heart failure (RR 2.9, 95% CI 1.6-5.3). Patients who received less than 10 mg of parenteral morphine sulfate equivalents per day were more likely to develop delirium than patients who received more analgesia (RR 5.4, 95% CI 2.4-12.3). Patients who received meperidine were at increased risk of developing delirium as compared with patients who received other opioid analgesics (RR 2.4, 95% CI 1.3-4.5). In cognitively intact patients, severe pain significantly increased the risk of delirium (RR 9.0, 95% CI 1.8-45.2).Conclusions: Using admission data, clinicians can identify patients at high risk for delirium following hip fracture. Avoiding opioids or using very low doses of opioids increased the risk of delirium. Cognitively intact patients with undertreated pain were nine times more likely to develop delirium than patients whose pain was adequately treated. Side chain modifications were introduced to endomorphin 2 (E2) to improve its binding properties and biological activity. A number of C-terminal modifications decreased the binding affinity to the mu-opioid receptor and the intrinsic activity in rat brain membranes. The exception was E2-ol, which showed increased binding affinity to MOR and higher potency in stimulating [35S]GTPγS binding. N-methylation of Phe3 (MePhe3) attenuated the binding affinity and produced a rightward shift of [35S]GTPγS binding curves. All derivatives had lower intrinsic activity than E2. Some of the modified peptides partially inhibited, while YPF-benzyl-allyl-amide fully inhibited, the E2 or [d-Ala2,MePhe4,Gly5ol]enkephalin stimulated [35S]GTPγS binding. Marked differences were found between the results obtained using tritiated E2, tritiated naloxone, and [35S]GTPγS binding, indicating the possible involvement of multiple binding sites. The data presented demonstrate that the C-terminal amide group has an essential role in the regulation of the binding and the agonist/antagonist properties of E2. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Context: Hip fracture is a common clinical problem that leads to considerable mortality and disability. A need exists for a practical means to monitor and improve outcomes, including function, for patients with hip fracture.Objectives: To identify and compare the importance of significant prefracture predictors of functional status and mortality at 6 months for patients hospitalized with hip fracture and to compare risk-adjusted outcomes for hospitals providing initial care.Design: Prospective study with data obtained from medical records and through structured interviews with patients and proxies.Setting and Participants: A total of 571 adults aged 50 years or older with hip fracture who were admitted to 4 New York, NY, metropolitan hospitals between August 1997 and August 1998.Main Outcome Measures: In-hospital and 6-month mortality; locomotion at 6 months; and adverse outcomes at 6 months, defined as death or needing assistance to ambulate, compared by hospital, adjusting for patient risk factors.Results: The in-hospital mortality rate was 1.6%. At 6 months, the mortality rate was 13.5%, and another 12.8% needed total assistance to ambulate. Laboratory values were strong predictors of mortality but were not significantly associated with locomotion. Age and prefracture residence at a nursing home were significant predictors of locomotion (P =.02 for both) but were not significantly associated with mortality. Adjustment for baseline characteristics either substantially augmented or diminished interhospital differences in outcomes. Two hospitals had 1 outcome (functional status or mortality) that was significantly worse than the overall mean while the other outcome was nonsignificantly better than average.Conclusions: Mortality and functional status ideally should be considered both together and individually to distinguish effects limited to one or the other outcome. Transvaginal sonography is used generally to detect adnexal masses and the ADNEX model developed by the International Ovarian Tumour Analysis (IOTA) group is a mathematical model suitable to distinguish between benign and malignant lesions. Change in the ovarian cycle after menopause is responsible for the different prevalence of each adnexal lesion. A number of new synthetic nociceptin ligands were studied in receptor binding and functional tests in rat brain membranes and in cloned systems. Ligand binding experiments were performed with three different radioprobes developed in our lab. The nociceptin derivatives exhibited high affinity in competition experiments. Receptor-mediated G-protein activation was determined in [[sup 35]S]GTPgS binding assays. Among the new structures examined, Ac-RYYRIK-ol was found to be only a weak stimulator by itself, whereas this compound inhibited receptor-mediated G-protein activation. These data suggest that Ac-RYYRIK-ol is a high affinity peptide antagonist for the nociceptin receptor. The UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Model and the various psychometric instruments developed and validated based on this model are well established in clinical and research settings. However, evidence regarding the psychometric validity, reliability, and equivalence across multiple countries of residence, languages, or gender identities, including gender-diverse individuals, is lacking to date. Using data from the International Sex Survey ( N  = 82,243), confirmatory factor analyses and measurement invariance analyses were performed on the preestablished five-factor structure of the 20-item short version of the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale to examine whether (a) psychometric validity and reliability and (b) psychometric equivalence hold across 34 country-of-residence-related, 22 language-related, and three gender-identity-related groups. The results of the present study extend the latter psychometric instrument's well-established relevance to 26 countries, 13 languages, and three gender identities.
