The article presents information related to Alan Newton, a recently released and vindicated man who spent more than 20 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Newton, who was convicted of the rape, robbery and assault of a Bronx woman and sentenced to rot in prison, was released on July 6, 2006, only because it was proved in recent DNA tests performed on evidence, that Newton did not commit the crime. According to Vanessa Potkin, Newton's attorney from the Innocence Project, Newton's release could have come at least 12 years earlier had there not been fatal flaws in the way authorities preserve, store and retrieve evidence and grossly neglect inquiries that could mean the life and liberty of the accused.
