Abstract

Magnetic nanoparticles play an important role in several biomedical applications such as hyperthermia, drug targeting, and disease detection. To realize an effective working of these applications, the spatial distribution of the particles needs to be accurately known, in a noninvasive way. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) is a promising and sensitive measurement technique for recovering these distributions. In the conventional approach, EPR is applied with a homogeneous magnetic field. In this paper, we employ different heterogeneous magnetic fields that allow to stabilize the solution of the associated inverse problem and to obtain localized spatial information. A comparison is made between the two approaches and our novel adaptation shows an average increase in reconstruction quality by 5% and is 12 times more robust towards noise. Furthermore, our approach allows to speed up the EPR measurements while still obtaining reconstructions with an improved accuracy and noise robustness compared to homogeneous EPR. Abstract

Magnetorelaxometry (MRX) is a sensitive measurement technique frequently employed in biomedical applications for imaging magnetic nanoparticles (MNP). In this article, we employ a first principles model to investigate the effects of different iron oxide MNP sample properties on the Néel relaxation time constant τN in magnetorelaxometry. Using this model, we determined that dipolar interactions start to have an impact on the MRX signal from Fe concentrations of 100 mmol/l and result in a smaller τN. Additionally, the micromagnetic damping constant, closely related to τN, was found to be between 0.0005 and 0.002 by comparison to an MRX measurement of iron oxide particles. This is significantly lower compared to the bulk value of 0.07 for this material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A complete understanding of domain wall motion in magnetic nanowires is required to enable future nanowire based spintronics devices to work reliably. The production process dictates that the samples are polycrystalline. In this contribution, we present a method to investigate the effects of material grains on domain wall motion using the GPU-based micromagnetic software package MuMax3. We use this method to study current-driven vortex domain wall motion in polycrystalline Permalloy nanowires and find that the influence of material grains is fourfold: an extrinsic pinning at low current densities, an increasing effective damping with disorder strength, shifts in the Walker breakdown current density, and the possibility of the vortex core to switch polarity at grain boundaries. Abstract

A numerical analysis is focused on the influence of patterning and finite-size effects on the hysteresis properties and magnetization reversal of permalloy antidot films with square lattice and square holes. Simulations are performed by solving the Landau-Lifshitz equation. The aim is to explain the relationships between the shape of the hysteresis loop and the different stages of the reversal process. In particular, the switching mechanism is characterized by the nucleation of domain chains that destroy the periodic symmetry in the magnetization present when infinite periodicity is considered. This behavior is strongly influenced by the demagnetizing effects arising both at the film boundaries and at the hole edges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Spintronics devices like racetrack memory rely on the controlled movement of domain walls in magnetic nanowires. The effects of distributed disorder on this movement have not yet been studied extensively. Defects give rise to a pinning potential that can be characterized in terms of a depth and an interaction range. We investigate how the effects of defects can be realistically introduced in micromagnetic simulations by comparing the properties of the pinning potential to experimental results in the literature. We show that the full 3-dimensional simulations can be replaced by equivalent 2-dimensional ones and propose two approaches to include defects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Magnetorelaxometry (MRX) is a measurement technique able to sense the magnetic field originating from magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The concentration distribution of MNPs can be recovered by interpreting the MRX measurement data with a numerical model, i.e., by solving an inverse problem. We investigate the actual impact of noise on the MNP reconstruction quality when using distributed excitation coil configurations and how the excitation setup needs to be adapted when prior information on the MRX noise is known. Results show that an approximately 4 times larger sensitivity can be attained when adapting the excitation setup to the known realistic noise. The proposed methodology is able to assess the sensitivity limits of the MRX measurement setup more accurately compared to convenient noise models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To study the connection between macroscopic hysteretic behavior and the microstructural properties, this paper presents and validates a new material dependent three-dimensional mesoscopic magnetic hysteresis model. In the presented mesoscopic description, the different micromagnetic energy terms are reformulated on the space scale of the magnetic domains. The sample is discretized in cubic cells, each with a local stress state, local bcc crystallographic axes, etc. The magnetization is assumed to align with one of the three crystallographic axes, in positive or negative sense, defining six volume fractions within each cell. The micromagnetic Gibbs free energy is described in terms of these volume fractions. Hysteresis loops are computed by minimizing the mesoscopic Gibbs free energy using a modified gradient search for a sequence of external applied fields. To validate the mesohysteresis model, we studied the magnetic memory properties. Numerical experiments reveal that (1) minor hysteresis loops are indeed closed and (2) the closed minor loops are erased from the memory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this article, magnetization loops under mechanical stress and magnetostriction loops under quasistatic magnetic excitation conditions are discussed. In both cases, the hysteresis loops are modeled using the Preisach theory. The identification procedure of the material parameters is described. The article discusses first the shape of the Preisach distribution function for the study of magnetostriction loops. Next, a Preisach model is proposed for the description of magnetization loops under mechanical stress starting from the magnetization loop obtained without applying mechanical stress. A setup has been constructed for the measurement of magnetization loops under compressive or tensile stress. Also, a measuring system based on a single sheet tester and on optical displacement measurement techniques is used to establish the magnetostrictive behavior of laminated SiFe alloys. It is shown that a good correspondence between the calculated and measured magnetization and magnetostriction loops is obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this article, the magnetic properties of nonoriented electrical steel under sinusoidal and distorted excitations are investigated for the whole range of unidirectional mechanical stresses. The distorted flux obtained from the tooth tip of 3 kW induction machine at no-load test was put into the measurement system. The total losses increase for compressive stress both under sinusoidal and distorted excitations. For tensile elastic stresses, the total losses first decrease and then increase in a very similar way for both excitations. In contrast, the difference between total losses under sinusoidal and distorted magnetic fluxes becomes smaller with increase of the plastic strain. This work is a serious step toward complete characterization of the magnetic properties of electrical steel in the teeth area of induction machines. A deeper insight of that problem can improve the design of induction machines and other electromagnetic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this article a generalized dynamic Preisach model is proposed in order to describe in a proper way the excess losses in grain oriented SiFe alloys. The magnetization rate dφ/dt for each Preisach dipole is defined as a function of the effective field, the switching fields α or β together with three material parameters, i.e., k[sub d], k[sub n], and s. Here, k[sub n] and s are material parameters introduced, while k[sub d] is the classical material parameter in the usual dynamic Preisach model. The correlation between this switching rule and the (n,H[sub exc]) characteristic in the statistical loss theory is discussed. Abstract

Wage labour is important in livestock farming in Amazonia, as in other regions. It is increasing, and agricultural production systems that were hitherto family-based are increasingly turning to it. Few studies have been carried out on wage labour in livestock farming. Yet it impacts on both the operation and reproduction of livestock farms, and the territorial dynamics in which they interfered. The issue we address here is that of the place of different patterns of wage labour (the term covers indeed several distinct situations) in the sustainability of livestock farming and territorial dynamics. To this end we analysed the different types of wage labour in Brazilian Amazonia and compared them with those found in other regions of the world. These patterns refer to different forms of mobility that underpin territorial adjustments of work groups and livestock farming activities.
