A method for fabricating nanopatterned media is investigated. The FePt samples with CoO underlayer exhibited a possibly strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and the intergranular exchange coupling of the samples is also investigated by using DeltaM method.

Alloy thin films phase when separated to Ni(sub 80)Fe(sub 20))(sub 1-x)Mn(sub x) and anneals at 400degreeC, although bulk Ni(sub 80)Fe(sub 20)) and Mn are miscible at room temperature. A strong crystallographic texture is developed during annealing especially for the films with high Mn content.

The thermal stability on the MnIr/NiFe exchange couple in the pinned electrode of a magnetic tunnel junction is analyzed using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and x-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS). The presence of the AlO(sub x) tunnel barrier, which promoted the preferential migration of Mn, appears to be cause of the massive migration of Ni through formation of vacancies in the MnIr lattice.

The Mn diffusion to the plasma-oxidized AlO(sub x) tunnel barrier in the magnetic tunnel junctions is explored using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). A thin films stack consisting of Ta/AlO(sub x)/Co/Fe/IrMn/NiFe/Ta is deposited with the AlO(sub x) layer treated under different plasma oxidation durations.

6. Failure of exchange-baised low resistance magnetic tunneling junctions upon thermal treatment

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) were used to characterize low resistance tunneling junctions. RBS and TEM analyses also showed that the maximum temperature below which the electrode of an exchange-biased magnetic tunneling junction (MTJ) can maintain its multilayer structure lie between 400 and 500 degrees C.

We report the first observation of the Cabibo disfavored semileptonic decay mode D+ → ρ(770)0 μ+v and measure its decay rate relative to the Cabibbo favored mode D + → K ∗ (892) 0 μ + v to be Λ(D + → ρ(770) 0 μ + v Λ(D + → K ∗ (892) 0 μ + v) = 0.044 0.031 −0.025 ( stat. ) ± 0.014 ( syst. ) . The results are compared to theoretical predictions and to previous experimental upper limits.

The OPERA neutrino detector in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode through the study of νμ→ ντ oscillations. The apparatus consists of an emulsion/lead target complemented by electronic detectors and it is placed in the high energy long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. Runs with CNGS neutrinos were successfully carried out in 2007 and 2008 with the detector fully operational with its related facilities for the emulsion handling and analysis. After a brief description of the beam and of the experimental setup we report on the collection, reconstruction and analysis procedures of first samples of neutrino interaction events. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA., 0, P06020, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

The OPERA neutrino oscillation experiment is based on the use of the Emulsion Cloud Chamber (ECC). In the OPERA ECC, nuclear emulsion films acting as very high precision tracking detectors are interleaved with lead plates providing a massive target for neutrino interactions. We report on studies related to the effects occurring from the contact between emulsion and lead. A low radioactivity lead is required in order to minimize the number of background tracks in emulsions and to achieve the required performance in the reconstruction of neutrino events. It was observed that adding other chemical elements to the lead, in order to improve the mechanical properties, may significantly increase the level of radioactivity on the emulsions. A detailed study was made in order to choose a lead alloy with good mechanical properties and an appropriate packing technique so as to have a low enough effective radioactivity., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures
