Hardness is one of the basic parameters of water, and a high-level hardness of drinking water may be harmful to human health. Thus, it is very important to monitor drinking water hardness. In this work, a portable lateral flow distance-based paper sensor for the semi-quantitative detection of drinking water hardness is demonstrated. In the presence of Ca2+/Mg2+, the hydrogel can be formed via the chelation between sodium alginate and Ca2+/Mg2+, inducing a phase separation process. The viscosity change of the sodium alginate solution is directly related to the Ca2+/Mg2+ concentration and can be determined by the water lateral flow distance on test strips. The sensor successfully realizes the quantification of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in the range of 0-10 mmol L-1 and 4-20 mmol L-1, respectively. The recoveries are found varied from 95% to 108.9%. The water hardness is acceptable for drinking if the Cr values lies in the range of 0.259 to 0.419, and it is high with the Cr value above 0.595. Remarkably, the performance of the sensor is comparable with the commercial kit for real water samples, which avoids the subjective judgment. Nasal ions environment plays a crucial role in maintaining nasal physiology and supports olfactory transmission. Addressing the limited research on nasal ion levels and their association with olfactory function, paper-based sensors were developed for determination of sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride in the nasal mucus of healthy volunteers and patients with olfactory dysfunction. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes and carbon quantum dots from beetroot were incorporated into paper substrate where sensors were designed with ion association complexes for sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride enhancing the recognition sensing capabilities. The sensors composition was optimized, including ion-exchange materials and plasticizers, to enhance sensitivity and selectivity. The performance of the sensors is evaluated based on Nernstian slope, dynamic range, detection limit and response time. Selectivity of the sensors was tested and the results demonstrated high selectivity for the target ions. The sensors were successfully determined sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride levels in nasal mucus of healthy volunteers and patients with olfactory dysfunction. The results revealed elevated calcium levels in patients with olfactory dysfunction, highlighting associated diagnostic implications. Background: Calcium and magnesium ions are highly abundant and important cations in human body. At the same time, both dyscalcemia and dysmagnesemia are frequently encountered in the clinical practice. As deficiency or excess of Ca(II) or Mg(II) can cause severe symptoms, determining these ions in serum is of great importance. Concentration of these ions in biological samples is typically assayed in clinical laboratories with the use of expensive and specialized equipment. Since those methods cannot be easily adapted for self-diagnosis purposes, there is a great need to develop a convenient tool for reliable determination of calcium and magnesium in serum at the point-of-care., Results: The colorimetric methods employed for calcium and magnesium analysis were o-cresophtalein complexone assay and xylidyl blue assay, respectively. Analytical signal acquisition was accomplished using an ordinary flatbed scanner or smartphone and free software. For increased user-friendliness the device was optimized to perform simultaneous determination of calcium and magnesium ions in only 10 min. In the optimized conditions, the limit of detection for calcium ions was 0.09 mmol L -1 , while for magnesium it was 0.04 mmol L -1 . Determination of both ions requires only 4 μL of serum sample. The developed paper-based sensors were validated with control human serum samples and the obtained relative errors for majority of samples were below 20 %., Significance: In this paper, a microfluidic paper-based analytical device for simultaneous determination of calcium and magnesium ions in human serum is reported for the first time. A novel, rapid, and facile method for the colorimetric determination of calcium using micro-analytical paper-based devices (μ-PADs) was developed. The proposed analytical method utilizes the color differences developing, after the addition of calcium, on the surface of the devices because of the complexation reaction of calcium with Methylthymol Blue (MTB) at room temperature, in alkaline pH. The devices were manufactured with chromatographic paper, using wax barriers, and the analytical protocol was easily implemented without the need of any experimental apparatus except for a simple imaging device. The user must regulate the pH, add the solutions on the paper, and measure the color intensity of the formed Ca(II)-MTB complex with a flatbed scanner. The experimental conditions for optimum color development, the possible interfering substances, and the reliability of the paper devices in different preserving conditions were optimized, with satisfactory results. The method exhibited acceptable detection limits (2.9 mg L -1 ) with sufficiently good precision, which varied from 4.2% (intra-day) to 6.4% (inter-day). Saliva samples from healthy volunteers were successfully analyzed, and the calcium levels were calculated in the range of 30.71 to 84.15 mg L -1 .

In this communication a prototype of paper-based analytical device designed for simultaneous determination of orthophosphate and calcium ions, which levels are significant for hyperphosphatemia diagnostics, is presented. The laboratory-on-paper structure for two analytes detection was wax-printed on the surface of filter paper. These two-analyte disposable paper strips are combined with two paired LED-based fluorescence detectors and simple voltmeter used as recorder of analytical signal, what makes the developed device miniature, extremely low-cost, portable and user-friendly. Thus the developed device allows usage outside of specialized clinical laboratory. Moreover, each paper strip is disposable and its utilization is easy and fast and, additionally, burnt strip tests ensure waste non-infectious. The presented LED&Paper-based analytical device provides low detection limits: 1.4 μmol L -1 and 7.4 μmol L -1 for orthophosphate and calcium ions, respectively. Lignosulfonates are important by-products of the paper industry and may be transformed into different commodities. We studied the molecular properties of ammonium (LS-AM) and calcium Lignosulfonates (LS-C) and evaluated their bioactivity towards the early development of maize plantlets. The FT-IR, 13 C NMR and 1 H- 13 C-HSQC-NMR spectra showed that the two lignosulfonates varied in hydroxyl, sulfonate and phenolic content, while DOSY-NMR spectroscopy suggested a similar diffusivity. High Performance Size Exclusion Chromatography (HPSEC) was used to simulate the effects of root-exuded acids and describe the conformational dynamics of both LS substrates in acidic aqueous solutions. This technique showed that LS-C was stabilized by the divalent Ca 2+ counterion, thus showing a greater conformational stability than LS-AM, whose components could not be as efficiently aggregated by the monovalent NH4 + counter-ion. The plant bioassays revealed that LS-AM enhanced the elongation of the root system, whereas LS-C significantly increased both total and shoot plant weights. Background: Development of cost-effective platforms for identification of biomarkers is of paramount importance in low-income settings. The present work focuses on the development of a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPADs) for the diagnosis of osteoporosis by measuring three important bone biomarkers - calcium, alkaline phosphatase and vitamin D., Methods: Antibody-based detection is realized in μPAD reservoirs based on principle of colorimetric sensing, where μPAD images are captured using a smartphone. The results are compared with the calibration curves to give proper quantification of analytes., Conclusion: This device can be potentially developed into a point-of-care diagnostic device for low-income settings. To the best of our understanding, a μPAD platform for simultaneous diagnosis of multiple osteoporosis markers is not reported yet.

Lime mud is a kind of solid waste in the papermaking industry, which has been a source of serious environmental pollution. Ceramsites containing anorthite and gehlenite were prepared from lime mud and fly ash through the solid state reaction method at 1050°C. The objective of this study was to explore the efficiency of Ca(2+) and OH(-) release and assess the phosphorus and copper ion removal performance of the ceramsites via batch experiments, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that Ca(2+) and OH(-) were released from the ceramsites due to the dissolution of anorthite, gehlenite and available lime. It is also concluded that gehlenite had stronger capacity for Ca(2+) and OH(-) release compared with anorthite. The Ca(2+) release could be fit well by the Avrami kinetic model. Increases of porosity, dosage and temperature were associated with increases in the concentrations of Ca(2+) and OH(-) released. Under different conditions, the ceramsites could maintain aqueous solutions in alkaline conditions (pH=9.3-10.9) and the release of Ca(2+) was not affected. The removal rates of phosphorus and copper ions were as high as 96.88% and 96.81%, respectively. The final pH values of both phosphorus and copper ions solutions changed slightly. Quantitative determination of Ca, Mg, and Zn in fingernails was performed with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. Two different methods of producing solid standards for calibration were explored - preparation of keratin pellets and deposition of aqueous solutions to filter papers. Measurements of the temperature and electron density of the plasma produced on keratin pellets, filter paper, and nails were performed, and it was determined that the standards prepared on filter paper gave plasma temperatures and electron densities closer to those observed on the nails. The ablation rate of the filter paper was also more similar to that of the nails. Using calibration curves produced using these filter paper standards, Ca, Mg, and Zn were determined in fingernails of 11 subjects. For comparison, the same samples were digested and atomic absorption was used to determine the same three elements. The differences in results are discussed in light of sample homogeneity and instrumental precision; the best agreement was obtained for determination of Zn. The work suggests that the filter paper method of standard preparation may be appropriate for LIBS analysis of other samples that give relatively low temperature, low electron density plasmas (i.e., polymers)., (© 2013 Elsevier B.V. We used toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) method to confirm the combinational effects of identified toxic metals in a paper recycling mill effluent in inducing the decreased lifespan in nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Exposure to Ca + Al caused more severely decreased lifespan than that exposed to Ca, or Al; and exposure to Ca + Fe induced more severely decreased lifespan than that exposed to Ca, or Fe. Exposure to Ca+Al+Fe caused more severely decreased lifespan than that exposed to Ca, or Ca+Fe. Moreover, the baseline toxicity on lifespan was doubled by doubling the concentration of combined metals (Ca+Al+Fe) in spiking test in original effluent (oe), and lifespan defects in oe+Ca+Al+Fe exposed nematodes were more severe than that in Ca+Al+Fe exposed nematode. Therefore, Ca+Al+Fe exposure may largely explain the formation of decreased lifespan induced by the examined industrial effluent. Furthermore, the observed reduction of lifespan induced by the combination of high level of Ca with other metals may be at least partially independent of the insulin-like pathway.

Calcium hydroxide nanoparticles dispersed in ethanol or 2-propanol have been proposed for deacidification treatments of cellulose-based supports and are currently adopted by many paper and paintings conservators. There is however a risk inherent in this treatment: the dispersion would acquire a highly alkaline pH in the presence of moisture, absorbed by the dispersing alcohol solvents or by the cellulose-based support. Consequently, conditions of potential risk would be created for the structural integrity of the cellulosic supports, for some organic film-forming materials and some colouring matter. The simple tests conducted in this study clearly demonstrate that this risk is real, and suggest a cautious attitude in evaluating the suitability of these nano-dispersions for the treatment of some works of art. Abstract: The efficiency of a recently described non-aqueous method for paper deacidification using Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles in isopropanol was evaluated by pH and colorimetric measurements and by the analysis of the degree of polymerization (DP). Samples of plain paper and paper with iron gall ink were tested. The results were compared with non treated samples and samples submitted to the traditional treatment with saturated aqueous Ca(OH)2 solution. By comparing the two conservation methods, the aqueous one shows higher neutralization reaction kinetics than the non-aqueous one. The iron gall ink samples maintain their coloration closer to the original after the non-aqueous Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles treatment, in contrary to the aqueous treatment that changes the ink aesthetics considerably. Artificial aging tests revealed a general increase in the aging stability of deacidified paper samples. The Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles treatment can be an alternative for papers who can not be treated by the classical aqueous treatment, e.g. papers with water soluble components. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article presents information on calcium phytate in the treatment of corrosion caused by iron gall inks. Iron gall inks, developed later than carbon ink, became steadily more common and widespread during the middle ages. The carbon inks in use up until that time had the invaluable quality of not being reactive, due to the stability of carbon. They were not subject to chemical alteration and did not contain any substances that would damage the support. It seems that the instability of carbon ink may have encouraged the practice of adding small quantities of ferrous sulphate.
