The article discusses the research made by Marina Wolf of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in Chicago, Illinois, together with her colleagues, that demonstrated that an unusual type of receptor is formed in a rat's brain cells after cocaine withdrawal and that these expand the response to drug cues. Accordingly, Wolf's study on the self-regulation of neurons was influenced by the dominant thinking that dopamine neurons drive addiction. Wolf worked with pharmacologist Michela Marinelli to train rats to self-regulate the drug by poking the noses into a hole when given a stimulus that provides information on what to do.

This essay explores a topic that recalls Reyner Banham's celebration of American popular culture and his enthusiastic travels through the United States. From 1931 into the early 1950s, the US market for inexpensive postcards was dominated by the so-called 'linen' postcard, which was developed, designed, printed and marketed by Curt Teich & Co. of Chicago. Based on retouched black-and-white photographs and printed in vivid, often exaggerated colours on textured card stock, these inexpensive postcard represented the landscapes and roadside attractions of an optimistic, even utopian, American scene—an alternate world not always congruent with the reality of the US during decades of economic depression and war. To a historian, the encyclopaedic geographic iconography of Teich's linen cards, and of those printed by competitors, suggests popular middle-class attitudes about nature, wilderness, technology, mobility and the city during a self-conscious 'machine age'. For a collector, on the other hand, these cards, which are certainly authentic survivors of their time, evoke postmodern nostalgia for a lost world portrayed through the inaccurate representations of pasteboard images. The Guide to the Collection of the University of Chicago Library provides some identifying information for every item which has been incorporated into the collection of written works by Henry C. Simons, and an attempt has been made to arrange all items in the collection in a manner so as to make them most accessible to the researcher. This article summarizes the contents of the collection. The correspondence is divided into files by name of the correspondent and numbered in alphabetical order . Because Simons' professional interests were so often pursued in the context of personal relationships and academic and social activities, no attempt was made to distinguish between personal and professional correspondence. The University Policy section includes a number of letters and memorandums surrounding a controversy over the University of Chicago faculty contracts. The Economics Department Section includes memos regarding specific faculty appointments, faculty politics and complaints as well as some comments on student work. The unpublished manuscript section contains a number of relatively short essays, memorandums and other miscellaneous writings by the economist in various stages of completion.

In protest of the COVID-19 lockdowns, crowds gathered in downtown Chicago to "Re-Open Illinois" during May 2020. One sign in particular, held by a white woman in an American flag mask, drew particular attention: "ARBEIT MACHT FREI, JB," invoking the German phrase hung above Nazi concentration camps to taunt the then governor of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker. Reactions to this anonymous woman were swift, but critics missed that "ARBEIT MACHT FREI, JB" merely represented the front of the sign. When flipped, the sign read "Nice Haircut, Lori," an antiblack affront to Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot. In this paper, we think this semiotic elision to contend with the inextricability of the motives of these protests and the psychic life of labor. Mobilizing this sign as a vehicle to consider the racialization of work as a grammar of suffering, we ask what the deployment of "work makes you free" reveals about the relationship between American whiteness, labor and antiblackness? To answer this question, we excavate the libidinal investments undergirding the protestor's sign and its reliance on work as a category that renders the slave unthought. We contend that it is this cathexis that subtends the announcement by some conservative commentators that they would rather end their lives than live in lockdown. We conclude by engaging the anti-police brutality protests that occurred concurrent to the lockdowns, querying how the libidinal drives animating anti-masking may also scaffold the popularity of those movements. The article presents a sociological view of the press coverage of a sociological convention. The coverage is based on observations carried out by five newsmen-observers who attended the August 1965 American Sociological Association (ASA) meetings in Chicago, Illinois. The general conclusion of this study of the convention was that the confrontation of the sociologist with the representative of the news media was overwhelmingly inadvertent, disconcerting and only partially successful to either party. In terms of efficiency in social communication, it leaves much to be desired and strongly entices one to prescribe therapy. Few suggestions are made in advance of Florida sessions in order to get sociologist into communication with the Miami Press. It is suggested to issue a handbook in advance of the convention to all members of the ASA and once the convention has started, to maintain a special message board near the newsroom which offers a chance for newsmen to indicate their wish to contact writers of papers. It is also suggested the president of the ASA assemble a small, informal committee which would hold daily news briefings alerting them to persons or topics originating outside or inside the formal program of the convention.

This paper provides new evidence on the effects of moving out of disadvantaged neighborhoods on the long-run outcomes of children. I study public housing demolitions in Chicago, which forced low-income households to relocate to less disadvantaged neighborhoods using housing vouchers. Specifically, I compare young adult outcomes of displaced children to their peers who lived in nearby public housing that was not demolished. Displaced children are more likely to be employed and earn more in young adulthood. I also find that displaced children have fewer violent crime arrests. John Allderidge in his paper gives rather concrete examples and demonstrates an intuitive approach to matching the detail of description with the detail of specific need.
