Abstract: In this paper, our aim is to present the results of our researchs about the anaphoric accusative object in the Spanish variety of Madrid and in the Brazilian Portuguese variety of São Paulo and to propose a theoretical analysis to these constructions based on minimalist developments (CHOMSKY, 1999, 2000, 2004). Interviews of the Spanish variety of Madrid (CESTERO MANCERA et al. 2014) and Brazilian Portuguese variety of São Paulo (LIMA-HERNANDES; VICENTE, 2012) were analysed. Regarding the theoretical approach, the biological (CHOMSKY, 1981, 1986) and social (LABOV, 2008; WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 2009) perspectives on language were combined. We observed the effect of the antecedent referenciality, of the determinant indefinite features, of the bare nouns, of the structure and lexical aspect of verbs on possibility of elipsis in the Spanish variety of Madrid. Concerning the Brazilian Portuguese variety of São Paulo, the null objects were almost categorical and the lexical pronoun presented restrictions to less referencial antecedents. These results ressemble the tendencies of our previous research (SIMÕES, 2015) and the Spanish varieties of País Vasco (LANDA, 1993) and Quito (SUÑER; YÉPEZ, 1988). Keywords: Spanish; Brazilian Portuguese; anaphoric accusative object; linguistic variation; object agreement.

Abstract: This paper intends to present an analysis of two uses of adversative conjunction pero found in a Spanish written corpus in digital media. The theoretical-methodological apparatus used is the Functional Discourse Grammar – FDG (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008). According to RAE (2009), pero is coordinative conjunction in which presents two opposing clauses. From the point of view of FDG, however, these two units configure Discoursive Acts in an unequal relationship, which engender Concession rhetorical function. The speaker presents an Act to grant information in order to then present another Act that he considers arguably more relevant. Some of the uses found in this study are beyond that interpretation. The research universe consists of data collected from blogs and extracted from CORPES (Corpus del Español del Siglo XXI), from the Real Academia Española. It was verified that, besides being used between two Discourse Acts, it can also introduce Moves and also emphasize a Subact previously presented, being a valuable element for the speaker’s argument. Keywords: pero; Spanish; argumentation; rhetoric.

The objective of this paper is to present and discuss the results of an empirical survey that took place in 2008 involving students of Spanish from a Center of Foreign Languages Studies (Centros de Estudos de Línguas) sponsored by the State of São Paulo. The goal of the survey was to understand and measure, as far as possible, the degree of student´s motivation in the classroom as well as its underlying causes. Taking into account that until now these Centers are responsible to enforce the law that made mandatory the teaching of Spanish for high school students (as far as public schools in the State are concerned), we considered appropriate to publish these results so that the debate engendered by it could contribute to a motivating, and therefore more efficient, foreign language education. The survey, that included quantitative and qualitative information, was based on a sample of 161 students. The results suggested that i) the students were motivated during Spanish classes; ii) the main causes of motivation reported by students were the professor´s personality, the effort put in practice, the content , the autonomy in the choice of the language and the pleasure related to learning a foreign language; iii) one of the main causes of demotivation appointed by the survey was the absence of knowledge about cultural aspects related to the language being studied; iv) the activities described as the most motivating were, in this sequence, games and amusing activities, videos/films and songs; v) the activities considered the least motivating were seminars, oral exams/tests and composition.

ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of a pilot study that aims to analyse the differences in the resolution of ambiguous anaphora in Portuguese, English, and Spanish as first languages (L1) and as second languages (L2). To collect the data, a questionnaire was developed and applied to national and foreign students at the University of Algarve, in Faro, Portugal. The conclusions are that native English speakers usually interpret the anaphoric pronoun in the subject position of the subordinate clause as corresponding to the subject of the main clause, regardless of whether the pronoun receives emphasis or not. Portuguese and Spanish native speakers, on the other hand, seem to use the Position of Antecedent Strategy(CARMINATI, 2002) in cases of anaphora, but the preference becomes less evident when reversing the order of sentences (cases of cataphora). Besides the syntactic variables, the phrases were designed to investigate the influence of the semantic relation between the verbs to the resolution of ambiguous anaphora

This paper presents a generative analysis of accusative clitics involved in clitic-doubling constructions in Spanish. It will be shown that this kind of clitic does not constitute a single unitary element, but must be classified in two types, the anaphoric one and the deictic one. Whereas the former have been analyzed in early works such as Jaeggli (1982, 1986b), the occurrence of the latter may be related to the focalization of a constituent in situ. This analysis parallels with Suñer (1995), treating negative concord as a polarity phenomena, once the present work reveals a correlation between the syntactic realization of negative words in negative polarity and the realization of a clitic doubling a focused NP.

UIDB/03213/2020 UIDP/03213/2020 This paper presents the L1 Portuguese – L2 Spanish subcorpus of Corpus Escrito del Español L2 (CEDEL2), a new methodological resource for second language acquisition (SLA) research, which is freely searchable and downloadable (http://cedel2.learnercorpora.com). CEDEL2 is a large-scale, multi-L1 learner corpus of L2 Spanish which contains written productions from learners at all proficiency levels as well as 6 native control subcorpora (total size: over 1,100,000 words from over 4,000 participants). CEDEL2 follows strict corpus design criteria (Sinclair, 2005) and learner corpus design recommendations (Tracy-Ventura & Paquot, 2021a). In its current version (CEDEL2 v. 2), its Portuguese component includes an L1 Portuguese – L2 Spanish subcorpus, with 21,662 words written by 164 participants, and an L1 Portuguese native subcorpus, with 3,500 words from 16 L1 speakers of European Portuguese. Thanks to their design features (e.g., same design across subcorpora, inclusion of metadata about SLA-relevant variables, dual native control subcorpora) and freely available web interface, CEDEL2 and its Portuguese subcorpora allow researchers to investigate a wide range of topics in SLA. publishersversion published

In Spanish, combining an indefinite plural article and a cardinal number leads to an approximative interpretation similar to that provided by approximators like ‘approximately’. In this paper, we advance a syntactic and semantic analysis of these structures. We show that the construction shares a number of properties with structures containing explicit approximative elements, so it justified to assume that a particular constituent contributes the approximative meaning. We propose that an approximative morpheme Approx is combined with the cardinal number; the morphological realization of this morpheme is as the plural affix on the indefinite article. We advance a denotation for Approx, and elaborate the necessary assumptions on the functioning of numerals for our analysis to work at a general level.

In this paper we present a study of reading comprehension based on a contrastive argumentative-discursive approach. We examine the relationship between linguistic materiality and discursive processes, observing the connection between reading in a foreign language, writing production and textual memories in the mother tongue. In addition to an interest in practical language teaching and learning processes (in this case of Spanish and Portuguese), we investigate the question of politeness and the theoretical relationship between subjectivity, language, and textuality. The latter, being understood as the result of discourse regularities, is unique for each and every production, yet is also conditioned by plural discursive memories resulting from contradictory social relationships in a specific historical context (Foucault, 1986; Pêcheux, 1990). In the experiment presented here, we follow some of the procedures of the methodology applied in the European Galatea Project developed for the study of reading strategies in the inter-comprehension between Romance languages (Dabène, 1996). We use the procedure of simulation and the subjective projection of participants as well as the notion of discursive resonance in the analysis. The results, having to do with directness and indirectness in speech and the question of politeness in two typologically close languages, lead to the conclusion that the concept of politeness goes beyond a pragmatic strategy used to avoid conflicts to be approached as a marker of cultural identity constitution. The relevance of discursive awareness and its theoretical and practical consequences are then emphasized.

The aim of this paper is to verify the level of text comprehension (reading and translation) in Portuguese, by native speakers of Spanish and vice-versa. The subjects are freshmen, from different fields (300 native speakers of Portuguese and 300 of Spanish), who have never studied the other language neither as a second (L2) nor as a foreign language (FL). The results show that, in each group of subjects, there is a high level of comprehension of the foreign language, which varies from 58% to 94%, depending on the context and on the lexical/semantic similarity (or difference) between the key-words in the texts used in this research.

The purpose of this paper is to understand, through the Spanish teacher's, the pedagogic coordinator's, and the principal's accounts, two beliefs about the teaching and learning of Spanish in an elementary public school that has included Spanish as a foreign language in its syllabus since 2000. Beliefs are seen as socially historical and political products, connected to the broad socio-political contexts (BARCELOS; KALAJA, 2011). Results suggest that the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language in that school seems to be discursively an artifice to maintain the social stratification and the status quo.
