As a new pollutant treatment technology, microbial fuel cell (MFC) has a broad prospect. In this article, the devices assembled using walnut shells are named biochar-microbial fuel cell (B-MFC), and the devices assembled using graphene are named graphene-microbial fuel cell (G-MFC). Under the condition of an external resistance of 1,000 Ω, the B-MFC with biochar as the electrode plate can generate a voltage of up to 75.26 mV. The maximum power density is 76.61 mW/m2, and the total internal resistance is 3,117.09 Ω. The removal efficiency of B-MFC for ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) was higher than that of G-MFC. The results of microbial analysis showed that there was more operational taxonomic unit (OTU) on the walnut shell biochar electrode plate. The final analysis of the two electrode materials using BET specific surface area testing method (BET) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that the pore size of walnut shell biochar was smaller, the specific surface area was larger, and the pore distribution was smoother. The results show that using walnut shells to make electrode plates is an optional waste recycling method and an electrode plate with excellent development prospects. Age-related functional deterioration in skeletal muscle raises the risk for falls, disability, and mortality in the elderly, particularly in obese people or those with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). However, the response of the skeletal muscle to transitioning from obesity to diabetes remains poorly defined, despite that obesity is classified as a stage of pre-diabetes. We screened and selected spontaneously obese and diabetic rhesus monkeys and examined altered protein expression in skeletal muscle of healthy aging (CON), obesity aging (OB), and type 2 diabetes mellitus aging (T2D) rhesus monkeys using Tandem Mass Tags (TMT)-based quantitative proteomic analysis. In total, we identified 142 differentially expressed proteins. Muscle-nerve communication proteins were firstly suppressed at obese-stage. With the disintegration of skeletal muscle, mitochondrial complex I and other energy homeostasis relate proteins were significantly disordered at T2D stage. Indicating that aging related obesity suppressed muscle-nerve communication and contribute to T2D related functional deterioration of skeletal muscles in elderly rhesus monkeys. Some alterations of muscular functional regulator are detected in both obesity and T2D samples, suggesting some T2D related skeletal muscular hypofunctions are occurring at obesity or pre-obesity stage. Muscle-nerve communication proteins and muscular function related proteins could be potential therapy target or early diagnose marker of for skeletal muscular hypofunctions in aging obesity populations.

PurposeTo identify the key mental health and improvement factors in hospital administrators working from home during COVID-19 normalization prevention and control.MethodsThe survey was conducted from May to June 2023, and the practical experiences of 33 hospital administrators were collected using purposive sampling. The study examined a set of mental health factor systems. The relationship structure between the factors was constructed using the Decision-making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method. Finally, the structure was transformed using the influence weight of each factor via the DEMATEL-based Analytic Network Process.ResultsRegarding influence weight, the key mental health factors of hospital administrators are mainly “lack of coordination,” “time management issues,” and “work-life imbalances.” The influential network relation map shows that improvements can be made by addressing “improper guidelines,” “laziness due to being at home,” and “job insecurity” because they are the main sources of influence. The reliability level of the results for the network structure and weight was 98.79% (i.e., the gap was 1.12%

BackgroundThe importance of ferroptosis and the immune system has been mentioned in the pathogenesis of α-synucleinopathy. The α-synuclein-immunoreactive inclusions that primarily affect oligodendrocytes are the hallmark of multiple system atrophy (MSA). Limited evidence implicates that iron and immune responses are involved in the pathogenesis of MSA, which is associated with neurodegeneration and α-synuclein aggregation.MethodsThe RNA sequencing data were collected from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. MSA-C-related module genes were identified through weighted gene co-expression network analysis. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses were performed to predict the potential molecular functions. The candidate ferroptosis-related genes associated with MSA-C were obtained using a machine-learning algorithm. CIBERSORT was used to estimate the compositional patterns of the 22 types of immune cells.ResultsThe tissues for sequencing were extracted from postmortem cerebellar white matter tissues of 11 MSA-C patients and 47 healthy controls. The diagnostic ability of the six MSA-C-related ferroptosis-related genes in discriminating MSA-C from the healthy controls demonstrated a favorable diagnostic value, with the AUC ranging from 0.662 to 0.791. The proportion of CD8+ T cells in MSA-C was significantly higher than in the controls (P = 0.02). The proportion of NK cells resting in MSA-C was significantly higher than in the controls (P = 0.011).ConclusionFerroptosis and T-cell infiltration may be important pathways of disease development in MSA-C, and targeting therapies for these pathways may be disease-modifying.

Because switchable water is difficult to apply directly for oil removal, an enhanced approach to improve oil removal is proposed using a surfactant-free microemulsion (SFME) containing switchable water. The SFME is formed using switchable water (aqueous N, N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) or N,N-dimethylbutylamine (BDEA)) and a hydrophobic amine (N-butyldiethanolamine (DMBA)). The single-phase region for preparing the SFME is determined using a ternary phase diagram, and the microstructure types are distinguished using the conductivity method. The pH changes and dynamic laser scattering test results demonstrate that the SFME exhibits irreversible transformation behavior regulated by CO2. Moreover, the recovered SFME containing BDEA has a microstructure with a smaller particle size after removing the CO2 by bubbling N2 at 65 °C, which is attributed to the higher proportion of DMEA than that of BDEA. In addition, dodecane and diesel oil are shown to dissolve in the SFME, and the oil solubility of the SFME increases with increasing oil phase (DMBA) content. The interface free energy theory reveals that the oil is more easily detached with the addition of SFME than with switchable water only owing to the reduced interface free energy of oil on the solid surface. Thus, an enhanced approach for removing oil is proposed to wash oil sands, where the oil removal efficiency of switchable water can be improved by using SFMEs containing switchable water.

Abstract Current evidence on digital health interventions is disproportionately concerned with high-income countries and hospital settings. This scoping review evaluates the extent of use and effectiveness of digital health interventions for non-communicable disease (NCD) management in primary healthcare settings of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and identifies factors influencing digital health interventions’ uptake. We use PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science search results from January 2010 to 2021. Of 8866 results, 52 met eligibility criteria (31 reviews, 21 trials). Benchmarked against World Health Organization’s digital health classifications, only 14 out of 28 digital health intervention categories are found, suggesting critical under-use and lagging innovation. Digital health interventions’ effectiveness vary across outcomes: clinical (mixed), behavioral (positively inclined), and service implementation outcomes (clear effectiveness). We further identify multiple factors influencing digital health intervention uptake, including political commitment, interactivity, user-centered design, and integration with existing systems, which points to future research and practices to invigorate digital health interventions for NCD management in primary health care of LMICs.

Abstract The astonishingly distinct lubricity difference between the ionic liquid modified carbon nanoparticles grafted by anion and cation moieties (A-g-CNPs and C-g-CNPs) was well established as additives of polyethylene glycol (PEG200). The peripheral anion moieties and positively charged inner parts of C-g-CNPs could successively absorb onto the friction interfaces by electrostatic interactions to form the organic—inorganic electric double layer structures, tremendously boosting the lubricity of PEG200. Contrarily, the preferentially electrostatic adsorption of negatively charged inner parts but repulsion of the peripheral cation moieties determined the weak embedded stability of A-g-CNPs between the friction interfaces, even impairing the lubricity of PEG200. This work can offer solidly experimental and theoretical guidance for designing and developing the high-performance nanoadditives modified by ionic molecules.

Exploring new antibacterial materials is of great significance for limiting the transmission of germs and protecting human health. Although Ag and oxide nanoparticles have both been extensively used in the field of antibacterial, it is still urgently need to figure out how to combine their characteristics for sterilization. Herein, ZnO/In2O3‐Ag nanofibers are prepared with uniformly dispersed Ag through a facile method of electrospinning and subsequent sintering. The obtained nanofibers are of high purity and have diameters from 90 to 110 nm. The silver is in a zero‐valent state, which is beneficial for sterilization. The quantitative test of bacterial activity shows that the nanofibers are bactericidal for both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, with an especially strong inhibitory effect on E. coli. At relatively low concentrations, 98% of E. coli can be killed. Herein, light is shed on exploring more complexes of oxide nanomaterials and Ag for sterilization.

Recently, personality trait recognition, which aims to identify people’s first impression behavior data and analyze people’s psychological characteristics, has been an interesting and active topic in psychology, affective neuroscience and artificial intelligence. To effectively take advantage of spatio-temporal cues in audio-visual modalities, this paper proposes a new method of multimodal personality trait recognition integrating audio-visual modalities based on a hybrid deep learning framework, which is comprised of convolutional neural networks (CNN), bi-directional long short-term memory network (Bi-LSTM), and the Transformer network. In particular, a pre-trained deep audio CNN model is used to learn high-level segment-level audio features. A pre-trained deep face CNN model is leveraged to separately learn high-level frame-level global scene features and local face features from each frame in dynamic video sequences. Then, these extracted deep audio-visual features are fed into a Bi-LSTM and a Transformer network to individually capture long-term temporal dependency, thereby producing the final global audio and visual features for downstream tasks. Finally, a linear regression method is employed to conduct the single audio-based and visual-based personality trait recognition tasks, followed by a decision-level fusion strategy used for producing the final Big-Five personality scores and interview scores. Experimental results on the public ChaLearn First Impression-V2 personality dataset show the effectiveness of our method, outperforming other used methods.

Connected vehicles can benefit from sharing and merging their observations to develop a more complete understanding of the traffic scene and track traffic participants behind obstructions. Although vehicle-to-vehicle(V2V) communications provide a channel for point cloud data sharing, it is challenging to align point clouds from two vehicles with state-of-the-art techniques due to localization errors, visual obstructions, and differences in perspective. Therefore, we propose a two-phase point cloud registration mechanism to fuse point clouds which focuses on key objects in the scene where the point clouds are most similar and infer the transformation from those. Our system first identifies co-visible objects between vehicle views based on hyper-graph matching using multiple similarity metrics, and then refines the overlap region between co-visible objects across the views for point cloud registration. The system is evaluated based on both experimental and simulation data, which shows tremendous performance improvement when combing with state-of-art baselines.

Abstract Background Primary female genital system lymphoma (PFGSL) is an infrequent entity. All genital organs may be affected, and most PFGSLs are localized to the cervix, uterine body, and ovaries. The clinical manifestations are nonspecific, which complicates a timely diagnosis. We report an unexpected case of PFGSL and discuss the disease characteristics by reviewing the literature. Case presentation A 48-year-old G3/P2 woman presented to the Department of Gynecology with a physical examination. Ultrasound examination and CT revealed pelvic masses. The woman underwent surgical treatment because of the pelvic masses and underwent a hysterectomy for a recurrent mucinous borderline ovarian tumor. However, the results of the postoperative pathological examination showed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the endometrium. After four courses of chemotherapy, the woman was in good condition. The clinical manifestations were nonspecific, which made a timely diagnosis complex. Conclusion This case highlights the importance of the difficulty in detecting early PFGSL early and how easily nonspecific manifestations can be ignored. It may lead to missing the best time for early treatment.

Abstract Background The incidence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has been steadily increasing over the past decades. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) is the most common autoimmune disease, and is related to the pathogenesis of PTC. Programmed death-1 (PD-1) is currently used for the treatment of PTC, but there are very few studies on the clinical value of PD-1 in the diagnosis and targeted therapy of PTC. Methods The expression of T, B, NK cells and PD-1 in the peripheral blood of 132 patients with PTC (PTC group), 48 patients with nodular goiter (NG group) and 63 healthy subjects (HP group) were detected by flow cytometry. The expression of plasma T3, T4, FT3, FT4, TSH, TGAb and TPO was detected by chemiluminescence immunoassay. Among 132 PTC, 49 PTC&HT and 83 PTC&noHT were included. Among 48 NG, 10 NG&HT and 38 NG&noHT were included. The expressions of programmed death- ligand1(PD-L1) in tumor tissues of PTC group and thyroid tissues of NG group, PD-1 and CD3 in tumor infiltration lymphocyte (TIL) were detected by immunohistochemistry. Results The expression of FT3, TGAb, CD3+PD-1+, CD3+CD4+PD-1+ and CD3+CD8+PD-1+ in PTC and NG was significantly higher than that in the HP group. Moreover, CD3+PD-1+, CD3+CD4+PD-1+ and CD3+CD8+PD-1+ expression had significant differences between the PTC group and the NG group. In addition, the expression of TGAb, TPO, CD3+PD-1+, CD3+CD4+PD-1+ and CD3+CD8+PD-1+ in PTC&HT group was significantly higher than that in the PTC&noHT group. While, the expression of B cells, CD3+PD-1+, CD3+CD4+PD-1+ and CD3+CD8+PD-1+ in PTC&HT group was higher than that in NG&HT group. PD-1 showed a significant correlation with PTC lymph node metastasis. CD3+PD-1+ and CD3+CD4+PD-1+ was higher in N1 stage than in N0 stage. Immunohistochemical results showed that the expression of PD-1, CD3 and PD-L1 in PTC was significantly higher than that in NG. Conclusions T cell exhaustion might act as a biomarker for the differential diagnosis of PTC and NG. Patients with PTC&HT have obvious T cell exhaustion and increased expression of PD-1, PD-L1.Targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway could be a new approach to prevent malignant transformation from HT to PTC&HT in the future.

Pyroptosis is a brand-new category of programmed cell death (PCD) that is brought on by multitudinous inflammasomes, which can recognize several stimuli to pilot the cleavage of and activate inflammatory cytokines like IL-18 and IL-1β is believed to have dual effects on the development of multiple cancers including breast cancer. However, pyroptosis has different effects on cancers depending on the type of tissues and their distinct heredity. Recently, the association between pyroptosis and breast cancer has received more and more attention, and it is thought that inducing pyroptosis could be used as a cancer treatment option. In addition, a great deal of evidence accumulating over the past decades has evinced the crosstalk between pyroptosis and tumor immunological therapy. Thus, a comprehensive summary combining the function of pyroptosis in breast cancer and antitumor immunity is imperative. We portray the prevalent knowledge of the multidimensional roles of pyroptosis in cancer and summarize the pyroptosis in breast cancer principally. Moreover, we elucidate the influence of inflammasomes and pyroptosis-produced cytokines on the tumor microenvironment (TME) of breast cancer. Taken together, we aim to provide a clue to harness pyroptosis rationally and apply it to augment immunotherapy efficiency for breast cancer.

ObjectivesWhile timely assessment of long-term survival for patients with cervical cancer is essential for the evaluation of early detection and screening programs for cervical cancer, those data are extremely scarce in China. We aimed to timely and accurately assess long-term survival for patients with cervical cancer in eastern China, using cancer registry data from Taizhou, eastern China.MethodsPatients diagnosed with cervical cancer during 2004–2018 from four cancer registries with high-quality data from Taizhou, eastern China were included. A period analysis was used to calculate the 5-year relative survival (RS) overall and on stratification by sex, age at diagnosis, and region. Additionally, the projected 5-year relative survival (RS) of patients with cervical cancer during 2019–2023 was evaluated, using a model-based period analysis.ResultsOverall 5-year RS for patients with cervical cancer during 2014–2018 reached 90.9%. When stratified by age at diagnosis, we found a clear age gradient for 5-year RS, declining from 95.6% for age 74 years, while urban areas had higher 5-year RS compared to rural areas (92.9 vs. 88.6%). We found a clear increasing trend of 5-year RS during 2004–2018 overall and on stratification by region and age at diagnosis. The projected overall 5-year RS is expected to reach 94.2% for the period 2019–2023.ConclusionsWe found that, for the first time in China, using period analysis, the most up-to-date (during 2014–2018) 5-year RS for patients with cervical cancer reached 90.9%. Our data have important implications for the timely evaluation of early detection and screening programs for patients with cervical cancer in eastern China.

Metastatic breast cancer to the thyroid is rare. We report a case of breast cancer that metastasized to bilateral thyroid. A 62-year-old woman who was admitted due to thyroid nodules identified by ultrasound. Ultrasound revealed multiple thyroid nodules with calcification, which were classified as TI-RADS 4c. She had a history of left breast cancer 5 years ago, treated with radical mastectomy and adjuvant EC-TH chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The patient underwent fine-needle aspiration of bilateral thyroid nodules, and the cytology examination revealed a metastatic ductal carcinoma of breast. The findings indicate that cytological morphology, immunohistochemistry and molecular test are important for diagnosis of thyroid metastatic carcinoma.

The current tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) system is limited in predicting the survival and guiding the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients since the TNM system only focuses on the anatomical factors, regardless of the intratumoral molecule heterogeneity. Besides, the landscape of intratumoral immune genes has emerged as a prognostic indicator. The mediator complex subunit 8 (MED8) is a major polymerase regulator and has been described as an oncogene in renal cell carcinoma, but its pathophysiological significance of HCC and its contribution to the prognosis of HCC remain unclear. Here, we aimed to discuss the expression profile and clinical correlation of MED8 in HCC and construct a predictive model based on MED8-related immunomodulators as a supplement to the TNM system. According to our analyses, MED8 was overexpressed in HCC tissues and increased expression of MED8 was an indicator of poor outcome in HCC. The knockdown of MED8 weakened the proliferation, colony forming, and migration of HepG2 and Huh7 cells. Subsequently, a predictive model was identified based on a panel of three MED8-related immunomodulators using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and further validated in International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) database. The combination of the predictive model and the TNM system could improve the performance in predicting the survival of HCC patients. High-risk patients had poor overall survival in TCGA and ICGC databases, as well as in subgroup analysis with early clinicopathology classification. It was also found that high-risk patients had a higher probability of recurrence in TCGA cohort. Furthermore, low-risk score indicated a better response to immunotherapy and drug therapy. This predictive model can be served as a supplement to the TNM system and may have implications in prognosis stratification and therapeutic guidance for HCC.

BackgroundBreast cancer (BC) is a prevalent female cancer, which has high morbidity and mortality. However, the pathogenesis of BC has not been fully elucidated. Studies have shown that TGF-β1 plays an important role in regulating the balance between autophagy and apoptosis of tumor. We aim to clarify the specific mechanism of autophagy and apoptosis in breast cancer maintaining the tumor microenvironment.MethodsThe clinical characteristics of 850 BC patients were retrieved from the TCGA database. Differentially expressed autophagy-related genes (DEARGs) between tumor and normal tissues were obtained by the Wilcox test. Through Cox proportional hazard regression analysis, the prognostic risk model was constructed and verified by the ROC curve. We used MDC staining, colony formation assay, CCK-8, flow cytometric analysis to confirm the importance of TGF-β1 on the autophagy and apoptosis of breast cancer cells. Furthermore, western blot was performed to determine the relative expression of protein. The Kaplan-Meier Plotter database was utilized to identify the prognostic value of TP63.ResultsWe successfully constructed a prognostic risk model of breast cancer and screened out an autophagy-related prognostic gene -TP63. We predicted that TGF-β1 and TP63 have a binding site in the JASPAR database as expected. Additionally, TGF-β1 promoted autophagy and inhibited apoptosis of breast cancer cells by inhibiting the expression of TP63.ConclusionOur study demonstrated that the molecular mechanism of TGF-β/TP63 signaling in regulating autophagy and apoptosis of breast cancer and provided a potential prognostic marker in breast cancer.

BackgroundInflammation is not only involved in the development and progression of cancer but also affects the response to therapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in inflammation genes with the prognosis of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs).MethodsForty-seven SNPs were genotyped in 318 advanced NSCLC patients receiving EGFR-TKIs. Of 318 patients, 182 (57.2%) patients died during follow-up period. We assessed the association of SNPs with the progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) as well as calculated the weighted genetic risk score (GRS). We also explored the expression levels and prognostic values of inflammation genes in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) in Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) and using UCSC Xena, respectively. The relationship between the expression levels of IL15, IL17RA, AGER, MIF, and TNFRSF1A and EGFR mutation status was analyzed using UCSC Xena.ResultsIn single variant analyses, 3 SNPs (rs10519613, rs4819554, and rs4149570) were significantly associated with worse PFS. Five SNPs (rs10519613, rs4819554, rs2070600, rs755622, and rs4149570) were significantly with worse OS. In addition, high and intermediate GRSs (based on rs10519613, rs4819554, and rs4149570) were associated with worse PFS than those with low GRS. For OS, patients with high GRSs (based on rs10519613, rs4819554, rs2070600, rs755622, and rs4149570) had shorter survival time than those with low GRS. Furthermore, IL15, IL17RA, AGER, MIF, and TNFRSF1A were dysregulated in LUAD. There was difference in the expression level of TNFRSF1A between EGFR wildtype and EGFR-mutant LUAD. Both low AGER expression and high TNFRSF1A expression were significantly associated with worse PFS in LUAD. In addition, low IL17RA and AGER expression, high MIF and TNFRSF1A expression were significantly associated with worse OS in LUAD.ConclusionSNPs in inflammation genes could serve as prognostic biomarkers for NSCLC patients treated with EGFR-TKIs.

Abstract Background Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is an indolent tumor that is exploding with increasing thyroid nodules (TN). Environmental carcinogens, lifestyle changes increased the incidence of thyroid carcinoma. With the development of B-ultrasound imaging, more and more thyroid cancer has been found. There has been a debate about whether thyroid cancer is overtreated. Methods The expression of T cell subsets and plasma cytokines in 191 patients, including 79 patients with PTC (PTC group), 58 patients with thyroid nodules (TN group) and 54 healthy individuals (HP group) were analyzed by flow cytometry. Results High levels of natural killer cells (NK) were detected in PTC and TN groups than in HP group. High activities of CD8+HLA-DR+ and CD8+CD38+ showed a gradual upward trend from HP group to PTC group. The rise in the levels of TNF-α in PTC patients’ was evident when compared with HP group. CD8+CD38+ showed a significant correlation with lymph node metastasis. CD8+CD38+ co-expression was higher in Nx stage than N0 stage, while the proportion of IL-10 was dramatically decreased in the Nx stage. Conclusions These results indicated that CD8+CD38+ might act as a biomarker of PTC lymph node metastasis. The combination of CD8+HLA-DR+, CD8+CD38+ and TNF-α can be used as useful biomarkers for the early-warning indicator of PTC.

Abstract Background Cardiometabolic diseases are the leading cause of death and disability in many low- and middle-income countries. As the already severe burden from these conditions continues to increase in low- and middle-income countries, cardiometabolic diseases introduce new and salient public health challenges to primary health care systems. In this mixed-method study, we aim to assess the capacity of grassroots primary health care facilities to deliver essential services for the prevention and control of cardiometabolic diseases. Built on this information, our goal is to propose evidence-based recommendations to promote a stronger primary health care system in resource-limited settings. Methods The study will be conducted in resource-limited settings in China, Kenya, Nepal, and Vietnam using a mixed-method approach that incorporates a literature review, surveys, and in-depth interviews. The literature, statistics, and document review will extract secondary data on the burden of cardiometabolic diseases in each country, the existing policies and interventions related to strengthening primary health care services, and improving care related to non-communicable disease prevention and control. We will also conduct primary data collection. In each country, ten grassroots primary health care facilities across representative urban-rural regions will be selected. Health care professionals and patients recruited from these facilities will be invited to participate in the facility assessment questionnaire and patients’ survey. Stakeholders – including patients, health care professionals, policymakers at the local, regional, and national levels, and local authorities – will be invited to participate in in-depth interviews. A standard protocol will be designed to allow for adaption and localization in data collection instruments and procedures within each country. Discussion With a special focus on the capacity of primary health care facilities in resource-limited settings in low- and middle-income countries, this study has the potential to add new evidence for policymakers and academia by identifying the most common and significant barriers primary health care services face in managing and preventing cardiometabolic diseases. With these findings, we will generate evidence-based recommendations on potential strategies that are feasible for resource-limited settings in combating the increasing challenges of cardiometabolic diseases.

Abstract Background Previous studies reported the early diagnostic values of plasma Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-DNA. The present study aimed to assess the relationship between the concentration of plasma EBV-DNA and the number of CD8+PD-1+(programmed cell death-1,PD-1) and regulatory T (Treg) cells in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who were treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). Methods This study included 37 patients treated with IMRT. Peripheral blood samples were collected two times for each patient, before radiation therapy and 1 week after the treatment. Further, the numbers of CD4+, Treg, CD8+, and CD8+PD1+ cells were determined by flow cytometry. Results The changes after IMRT were determined by comparing the numbers of neutrophils, lymphocytes, CD4+, Treg, CD8+, CD8+PD1+ cells, and the concentration of plasma EBV-DNA between pretreatment and post-treatment groups. IMRT could reduce the expression level of PD-1 and the number of Treg cells. The concentration of plasma EBV-DNA and the expression level of CD8+PD-1+ were closely associated with the occurrence and development of NPC. Thus, EBV-DNA can be used as an important marker for early diagnosis, and IMRT can strongly reduce the copies of EBV-DNA. Conclusions This study showed that IMRT could reverse T-cell exhaustion and reduce the copies of EBV-DNA. In clinical practice, plasma EBV-DNA is a sensitive biomarker for diagnosis, prognosis, and evaluation of clinical efficacy.

Background. Accumulating evidence shows that autophagy plays a vital role in tumor occurrence, development, and metastasis and even determines tumor prognosis. However, little is known about its role in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) or the potentially oncogenic role of TFE3 in regulating the autophagy-lysosome system. Methods. Immunohistochemistry and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) were used to examine the expression of TFE3, P62/SQSTM1, and LC3 in PTC and paracancerous tissues. TFE3, P62/SQSTM1, LC3, cathepsin L (CTSL), and cathepsin B (CTSB) were evaluated using Western blot analysis. After inducing TFE3 overexpression by plasmid or TFE3 downregulation by small interfering RNA (siRNA) transfection, MTT, wound healing, and cell migration and invasion assays were used to verify the effects on invasion, migration, and the levels of autophagy-lysosome system-related proteins such as P62/SQSTM1, LC3, CTSL, and CTSB. Results. TFE3 was overexpressed in PTC tissues compared with paracancerous tissues. Analysis of the clinicopathological characteristics of PTC patients showed that high TFE3 expression was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis. TFE3 overexpression in the PTC cell lines KTC-1 and BCPAP promoted proliferation, invasion, and migration, while TFE3 knockdown had the opposite effects. Furthermore, we identified a positive relationship among the expression levels of TFE3, P62/SQSTM1, LC3, CTSL, and CTSB. We found that silencing TFE3 inhibited the expression of P62/SQSTM1, LC3, CTSL, and CTSB in PTC cells. However, TFE3 overexpression had the opposite effects. Conclusions. The present study provided evidence for the underlying mechanisms by which TFE3 induces autophagy-lysosome system activity in PTC.

Background and Aims. In patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), local treatment failure and distant metastasis contribute largely to poor outcomes. The nasopharynx is an important lymphoid tissue, and NPC tumourigenesis and development are partly attributed to immune system disorders. Human leukocyte antigen F (HLA-F) has shown a close correlation with NPC in many genome-wide association studies (GWASs). However, clinical studies rarely explore the relationship of HLA-F expression with the clinical parameters and outcomes in patients with NPC. Methods. In this study, we used immunohistochemistry to evaluate HLA-F expression in 74 paraffin-embedded NPC tissue sections and then analysed the association between HLA-F expression and clinical parameters and outcomes. The plasma concentration of soluble HLA-F (sHLA-F) in NPC patients and normal controls was also detected, via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results. Low, moderate, and high HLA-F expression levels were observed in 47.3% (35/74), 35.1% (26/74), and 17.6% (13/74), respectively, of the tissue samples. HLA-F expression showed a significant correlation with local recurrence (p=0.037) and distant metastasis (p=0.024) and was also an independent factor for local recurrence-free survival (LRFS; p=0.016) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS; p=0.004). Although the mean concentration of plasma sHLA-F in the NPC patients was higher than that in the normal controls (13.63 pg/ml vs. 10.06 pg/ml), no statistical significance was observed (p=0.118). Conclusions. Our study provides the first evidence that high HLA-F expression is associated with NPC local recurrence and distant metastasis and may be regarded as a poor prognostic factor for NPC patients. Additional studies using larger sample sizes may be necessary to determine whether sHLA-F is a feasible NPC diagnostic indicator.

Because switchable water is difficult to apply directly for oil removal, an enhanced approach to improve oil removal is proposed using a surfactant-free microemulsion (SFME) containing switchable water. The SFME is formed using switchable water (aqueous N, N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) or N,N-dimethylbutylamine (BDEA)) and a hydrophobic amine (N - butyldiethanolamine (DMBA)). The single-phase region for preparing the SFME is determined using a ternary phase diagram, and the microstructure types are distinguished using the conductivity method. The pH changes and dynamic laser scattering test results demonstrate that the SFME exhibits irreversible transformation behavior regulated by CO2. Moreover, the recovered SFME containing BDEA has a microstructure with a smaller particle size after removing the CO2 by bubbling N 2 at 65 °C, which is attributed to the higher proportion of DMEA than that of BDEA. In addition, dodecane and diesel oil are shown to dissolve in the SFME, and the oil solubility of the SFME increases with increasing oil phase (DMBA) content. The interface free energy theory reveals that the oil is more easily detached with the addition of SFME than with switchable water only owing to the reduced interface free energy of oil on the solid surface. Thus, an enhanced approach for removing oil is proposed to wash oil sands, where the oil removal efficiency of switchable water can be improved by using SFMEs containing switchable water. Laser remote sensing of earthquake waves has the potential to be used in many applications. This article shows a Doppler model for laser remote sensing of seismic waves based on a wavefront sensor. The longitudinal vibration wave is analyzed using remote sensing, guided by theoretical principles. To determine the magnitude of ground vibration, we employ the method of wavefront phase change analysis, utilizing a continuous laser emitting light with a wavelength of 635 nm to illuminate the ground target. The ground vibration amplitude within the range of 0.12–1.18 mm was examined, confirming the reasonableness of the Doppler model. Simultaneously, the experimental findings indicate that the system exhibits a certain enhancement in detection accuracy compared to the conventional laser remote sensing detection technique. This approach can detect vibration signals at a sub-millimeter scale level, with an accuracy of 1% to 2%. The approach can fulfill the requirements for detecting seismic waves with low frequencies.

Background: The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a natural physiological barrier that protects the central nervous system from foreign substances and limits the delivery of drugs to the brain. Nanotechnology has opened up new possibilities for drug delivery in the brain. Over several decades, various Nanoparticle Drug Delivery Systems (NDDS) that can cross the BBB have been developed for targeted delivery in the brain. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the current research hotspots and trends of NDDS across the BBB, this paper employs bibliometric analysis of articles published in the core database of Web of Science (WOS) from 1996 to 2022. Method: A search for relevant research literature on NDDS that can cross the BBB was conducted in the Web of Science database, covering the period from 1996 to 2022. The Bibliometrix R-4.0 software package was used to analyze data related to the countries of publication, research institutions, journals, citations, and keywords. The analysis aimed to identify the co-occurrence of keywords in the documents, including their titles and abstracts. Additionally, cooperative network analyses of authors, institutions, and countries of publication were conducted. Results: A total of 436 articles were analyzed, originating from 174 journals and 13 books, with the majority published in Q1 and Q2 journals. Contributors from 53 countries or regions participated in the publication of these articles, with China, the United States, and India having the highest number of articles by correspondent authors, and China, the United States, and Germany being the most cited countries. Fudan University, Hacettepe University, and Sichuan University were the top three institutions with the most publications. Among the 436 articles analyzed, 1337 keywords and 1450 keywords plus were identified. Factor analysis grouped the keywords plus into two categories: drug delivery systems, polymeric nanoparticles, gold nanoparticles, transferrin, and others, and drug, delivery, efficiency, expression, and mechanism. Conclusion: The research on NDDS that can cross the BBB is gradually receiving attention, and the recognition and cooperation in this field have increased.

Active waveband selective switches for the telecommunication wavebands are fabricated and demonstrated. This type of active waveband selective switch is composed of a guided-mode resonance filter, a twisted nematic liquid crystal (TNLC) layer, and a linear polariser. In voltage-off status, a fabricated active waveband selective switch with grating period of 893.86 nm exhibits high resonance peak with wavelength around 1311.2 nm. In voltage-on status, this switch exhibits a high resonance peak with wavelength around 1551.3 nm. The measured reflection peaks of another active waveband selective switch with grating period of 872.84 nm are located at 1309.1 and 1549.4 nm in voltage-on status and voltage-off status, respectively. Thus, light waveband can be tuned between O-band and C-band by electrically driving the TN-LC layer of this type of active waveband selective switch in real time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Silver nanowires (AgNWs) were chemically etched to significantly increase the surface roughness and then self-assembled on the liquid/gas interfaces via the interfacial assembly method to obtain aligned chemically etched silver nanowire films. The as-fabricated silver nanowire films were used as novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. The morphologies and plasmon characteristics of the substrates were investigated using multiple measurement methods. The performance of as-fabricated substrates was measured using rhodamine B as a probe. The detection limitation can be as low as 10−11 M. The greatly improved plasmonic properties are attributed to the efficient light coupling and larger electromagnetic field enhancement. The novel set of SERS substrates of aligned chemically etched AgNWs is believed to be important for efficient, homogeneous, and ultrasensitive SERS sensing applications.

Abstract Ordered nanopatterns of triblock copolymer polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block- poly (ethylene oxide)(PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO) have been achieved by the addition of lithium chloride (LiCl). The morphological and structural evolution of PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO/LiCl thin films were systematically investigated by varying different experimental parameters, including the treatment for polymer solution after the addition of LiCl, the time scale of ultrasonic treatment and the molar ratio of Li+ ions to the total number of oxygen atoms (O) in PEO block and the nitrogen atoms (N) in P2VP block. When toluene was used as the solvent for LiCl, ordered nanopattern with cylinders or nanostripes could be obtained after spin-coating. The mechanism of nanopattern transformation was related to the loading of LiCl in different microdomains.

In order to enhance oil recovery in high-temperature and high-salinity oil reservoirs, the copolymeric microspheres containing acrylamide (AM), acrylonitrile (AN) and AMPS was synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization. The copolymeric microsphere was very uniform and the size could be changed according to the condition of polymerization. The lab-scale studies showed that the copolymeric microsphere exhibit good salt-tolerance and thermal-stability when immersed in 20 x 105 mg/L NaCl(or KCl) solution, 7500 mg/L CaCl2 (or MgCl2) solution or 2000 mg/L FeCl3 solution, respectively. The copolymeric microsphere showed satisfactory absorbency rates. The sand-pipes experiments confirmed that the average toughness index was 1.059. It could enhance the oil recovery by about 3% compared with the corresponding irregular copolymeric particle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HAPAM was successfully prepared in inverse microemulsion. ¹H-NMR, FT-IR, DSC and TG results show that the copolymerization of acrylamide (AM) with DM16 was successful. However, the ratio of AM to DM16 is not calculated exactly due to the low percentage of hydrophobic monomer in polymer. Therein, we only proved the success of the incorporation of DM16 onto polyacrylamide backbone. According to our experiment, the conversions of monomers and molecular weight have a strong dependence on initiator concentration and aqueous phase weight fTaction. But it was not completely in accordance with literature. The difference may be ascribed to the major existence of locus of DM16 (at the interface of oil/water or in droplet). Compared with literature, the influence of initiator concentration on particle size was slight due to the high surfactant weight fraction, seeming to appear independent of initiator concentration. When the surfactant weight fTaction reaches a certain degree, it did not affect the conversion. For the particle size and molecular weight, it was other way around, suggesting that there was an intense chain transfer reaction to the emulsifier. In this work, we could not calculate the average number of free radical per particle n, because the part of the surfactant in excess recombines to form small micelle and the DM16 may continuously transfer from micelle to another micelle, resulting in difficulty to estimate precisely the number of the particles. This was also reflected in the difference of kinetics between our system and literature. Finally, the occurrence of nucleation at high conversion was proved indirectly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Supercapacitors as novel and efficient energy storage devices could provide a higher power density and energy density compared to other electronics and devices. However, traditional supercapacitors are readily damaged, which leads to degraded performance or even failure. To make them more durable and efficient, healable flexible shape memory-based supercapacitors were unprecedentedly explored by a transfer process, in which the conductive nano-carbon networks were decorated with pseudocapacitance materials, followed by embedding them into a shape memory polymer matrix containing healing reagents. The composite exhibited flexibility, supercapacitance and self-healing capability originating from the shape memory effect and healing reagent. The morphologies, thermal, mechanical and capacitive properties, and the self-healability of the composite were investigated. In particular, the influence of the compositions on the healing efficiency was considered. The optimized composite exhibited good capacitance (27.33 mF cm−1), stability (only 4.08% capacitance loss after 1500 cycles) and healable property (up to 93% of the healing efficiency). The findings demonstrated how to endow the flexible polymeric electronics with healable bio-mimetic properties and may greatly benefit the application of intelligent polymers in the field of multi-functional electrical materials.

A novel shape memory-based self-healable stretchable electrode was explored by embedding the silver nanowires (AgNWs) network into a healable polymer matrix. Unlike the traditional shape memory-assisted self-healing, pre-stretching to the temporary shapes, which was fixed in a typical shape, memory thermo-mechanical programming significantly enhanced the thermo-triggered healing performance. The morphological as well as conduction variations during the healing process were investigated. The enhancing effect of the pre-stretching on the healing efficiency was emphasized, which was expected to attribute to the release of the pre-stored strain energy driving the closure of the scratch. The findings disclosed how to utilize the shape memory effect to improve the biomimetic properties for the stretchable electrodes, which may greatly benefit the application of the intelligent polymers in the field of multi-functional flexible electronics.
