Active distribution grids that contain energy sources (so-called distributed generation or DG) are nowadays a reality. Besides the many benefits DGs bring to the distribution grid, some challenges are associated with their integration. Since there are DGs now in the distribution grid, the occurrence of islanding operation is possible. Since an islanding operation can be dangerous, it is necessary to have an effective method to detect it. In the last decade, scientists have made a great effort to develop and test various islanding detection methods (IDMs). Many approaches have been tested, and the methods based on computational intelligence (CI) have shown great potential. Among them, artificial neural networks (ANNs) gained most of the research attention. This paper focuses on ANN application for islanding detection. It gives an exhaustive review of the ANN types used for islanding detection, the types of input data, and their transformation to fit the ANNs. Furthermore, various applications based on specific input data, preprocessing types, different learning algorithms, real-time implementation, and various distribution models used for ANN are reviewed. This paper investigates the potential of ANNs to enhance islanding detection accuracy, reduce non-detection zone (NDZ), and contribute to an overall efficient detection method. In this paper, we propose a learning model for tracking the isolines of fluid based on the physical properties of particles in particle-based fluid simulations. Our method involves analyzing which weights, closely related to surface tracking among the various physical properties of fluid particles, are significant. These weights are used as input values for the learning algorithm, enabling relatively accurate isoline tracking. In addition, compared to existing learning models such as linear regression, LSTM (long short-term memory), and learning representation (1-layer) models, our method obtained superior surface tracking results without accumulating errors. By using our proposed network structure to track the fluid surface, it learns and predicts values derived from existing fluid simulation algorithms, eliminating the need for computational processes for level-set values and enabling real-time surface tracking. As the scale of the simulation increases, our method significantly reduces the time and resources consumed compared to traditional methods and can track the fluid surface without additional resource consumption. Furthermore, due to our method's simple network structure, the time consumed in the initial process of loading the model into memory is faster than models such as CNN and LSTM. Our proposed model occupies less than 30 kb of storage space, making it suitable for use in middleware. Photovoltaic (PV) fault detection is crucial because undetected PV faults can lead to significant energy losses, with some cases experiencing losses of up to 10%. The efficiency of PV systems depends upon the reliable detection and diagnosis of faults. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques has been a growing trend in addressing these issues. The goal of this systematic review is to offer a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements in AI-based methodologies for PV fault detection, consolidating the key findings from 31 research papers. An initial pool of 142 papers were identified, from which 31 were selected for in-depth review following the PRISMA guidelines. The title, objective, methods, and findings of each paper were analyzed, with a focus on machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) approaches. ML and DL are particularly suitable for PV fault detection because of their capacity to process and analyze large amounts of data to identify complex patterns and anomalies. This study identified several AI techniques used for fault detection in PV systems, ranging from classical ML methods like k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and random forest to more advanced deep learning models such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Quantum circuits and infrared imagery were also explored as potential solutions. The analysis found that DL models, in general, outperformed traditional ML models in accuracy and efficiency. This study shows that AI methodologies have evolved and been increasingly applied in PV fault detection. The integration of AI in PV fault detection offers high accuracy and effectiveness. Saltwater intrusion is an essential problem in estuaries that can threaten the ecological environment, especially in high-salinity situations. Therefore in this paper, traditional multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling are applied to forecast overall and high salinity in the Lower Scheldt Estuary, Belgium. Mutual information (MI) and conditional mutual information (CMI) are used to select optimal driving forces (DFs), with the daily discharge (Q), daily water temperature (WT), and daily sea level (SL) selected as the main DFs. Next, we analyze whether applying a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to remove the noise from the original time series improves the results. Here, the DWT is applied in Signal-hybrid (SH) and Within-hybrid (WH) frameworks. Both the MLR and ANN models demonstrate satisfactory performance in daily overall salinity simulation over the Scheldt Estuary. The relatively complex ANN models outperform MLR because of their capabilities of capturing complex interactions. Because the nonlinear relationship between salinity and DFs is variable at different locations, the performance of the MLR models in the midstream region is far inferior to that in the downstream region during spring and winter. The results reveal that the application of DWT enhances simulation of both overall and high salinity in this region, especially for the ANN model with the WH framework. With the effect of Q decline or SL rise, the salinity in the middle Scheldt Estuary increases more significantly, and the ANN models are more sensitive to these perturbations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Along with seaports automation, there is growing interest in the automation of Grab-Type Ship Unloader (GTSU) that unloads coal and iron ore from bulk carriers. Autonomous unloading operations of GTSU offer the potential for significant productivity improvement and cost savings. In this paper, an AI model trained with manual operation data was designed for GTSU automation operation, and the AI model was verified through the equation-of-motion-based GTSU operation simulator. The operation data of hoist, grab, and trolley were predicted by training the designed AI model with the manual operation data of GTSU. Before applying the predicted data to the actual equipment, the predicted driving data was verified using the equation-of-motion-based GTSU operation simulator. The AI prediction model was designed using the Multi-Layer Perception network, a type of artificial neural network. The AI prediction model was evaluated with the Mean-Squared Error indicator, and the validation loss was found to be less than 0.02. In addition, verification of the prediction data was performed using the GTSU dynamics-based simulator. The Mean Relative Error was up to 0.50, and the R2 score value exceeded 0.92, indicating that the model is effective in predicting operation data. This paper presents a review of papers specifically focused on the use of both numerical and machine learning methods for groundwater level modelling. In the reviewed papers, machine learning models (also called data-driven models) are used to improve the prediction or speed process of existing numerical modelling. When long runtimes inhibit the use of numerical models, machine learning models can be a valid alternative, capable of reducing the time for model development and calibration without sacrificing accuracy of detail in groundwater level forecasting. The results of this review highlight that machine learning models do not offer a complete representation of the physical system, such as flux estimates or total water balance and, thus, cannot be used to substitute numerical models in large study areas; however, they are affordable tools to improve predictions at specific observation wells. Numerical and machine learning models can be successfully used as complementary to each other as a powerful groundwater management tool. The machine learning techniques can be used to improve calibration of numerical models, whereas results of numerical models allow us to understand the physical system and select proper input variables for machine learning models. Machine learning models can be integrated in decision-making processes when rapid and effective solutions for groundwater management need to be considered. In recent years, artificial neural networks have been widely used in the fault diagnosis of rolling bearings. To realize real-time diagnosis with high accuracy of the fault of a rolling bearing, in this paper, a bearing fault diagnosis model was designed based on the combination of VMD and ANN, which ensures a higher fault prediction accuracy with less computational time. This paper works from two aspects, including fault feature extraction and neural network structural parameter optimization to obtain an ANN bearing fault diagnosis model with high performance. The raw vibration signals of 10 fault types were divided into training, verification and testing datasets by the random step increment slip method. The variational mode decomposition method was used to decompose the raw vibration signal into several intrinsic mode functions. A new definition of the energy of each intrinsic mode function based on discrete Fourier transform and information entropy method were used as the input for the artificial neural network. Furthermore, the structural parameters of the artificial neural network were designed to obtain a high-performance neural network. The artificial neural network used in this paper had three hidden layers and 13 neurons in each hidden layer. Compared with several machine and deep learning algorithms, the artificial neural network can better fulfill the classification task of rolling bearing fault types with a mean prediction accuracy of 99.3% and computation time of 2.4 s based on a small training dataset. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are machine learning algorithms inspired by the structure and function of the human brain. Their popularity has increased in recent years due to their ability to learn and improve through experience, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. ANNs are often used as part of deep learning, which enables them to learn, transfer knowledge, make predictions, and take action. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of ANNs and explore potential directions for future research. To achieve this, the paper analyzes 10,661 articles and 35,973 keywords from various journals using a text-mining approach. The results of the analysis show that there is a high level of interest in topics related to machine learning, deep learning, and ANNs and that research in this field is increasingly focusing on areas such as optimization techniques, feature extraction and selection, and clustering. The study presented in this paper is motivated by the need for a framework to guide the continued study and development of ANNs. By providing insights into the current state of research on ANNs, this paper aims to promote a deeper understanding of ANNs and to facilitate the development of new techniques and applications for ANNs in the future. Recently, AI has been used in industry for very precise quality control of various products or in the automation of production processes through the use of trained artificial neural networks (ANNs) which allow us to completely replace a human in often tedious work or in hard-to-reach locations. Although the search for analytical formulas is often desirable and leads to accurate descriptions of various phenomena, when the problem is very complex or when it is impossible to obtain a complete set of data, methods based on artificial intelligence perfectly complement the engineering and scientific workshop. In this article, different AI algorithms were used to build a relationship between the mechanical parameters of papers used for the production of corrugated board, its geometry and the resistance of a cardboard sample to edge crushing. There are many analytical, empirical or advanced numerical models in the literature that are used to estimate the compression resistance of cardboard across the flute. The approach presented here is not only much less demanding in terms of implementation from other models, but is as accurate and precise. Obtaining mathematical models of nonlinear cyber–physical systems for use in controller design is both difficult and time consuming. In this paper, an ANN-based method is proposed to design a controller for a nonlinear system that does not require a mathematical model. The developed ANN-based control algorithm is implemented directly on a real-time field controller, and its performance is evaluated without the use of auxiliary devices, such as PCs or workstations. By executing machine learning algorithms on local devices or embedded systems, edge artificial intelligence (Edge AI) with transfer learning gives priority to processing data at the source, minimizing the necessity for continuous connectivity to remote servers. The control algorithm was developed using the Matlab Simulink environment. The first and second ANNs were cascaded, wherein the first ANN computes the appropriate pressure signal for the given displacement, while the second predicts the force based on the pressure value from the first ANN. Subsequently, the ANN-based control algorithm was converted to SCL code using the Simulink PLC Coder and deployed on the PLC for operation. The algorithm was tested using two different scenarios. The conducted tests demonstrated the successful prediction of pressure signals corresponding to the targeted displacement values and accurate estimation of force values. This paper presents a new approach for the online estimation of stator and rotor resistance of induction motors for speed sensorless vector-controlled drives, using feed-forward artificial neural networks with advanced adaptive learning rates. For the rotor resistance estimation, a neural network model based on rotor speed and stator currents is developed. The rotor flux linkages acquired from the voltage model are compared with the neural network model. The feed-forward neural network employs an adaptive learning rate as the function of the obtained error during training for quick convergence with minimal estimation error. A two-layered neural network model based on the stator voltage and current equations is developed for the stator resistance estimation. The d-q axes stator currents obtained from the developed model are compared with the acquired d-q axes stator currents. For the fast convergence with minimal estimation error, an adaptive learning rate as the function of error is adopted during training. Furthermore, the neural network estimates the induction motor's speed. The simulation and experimental results justify that the developed algorithms track variation in the resistances quickly and precisely along with the speed as compared with the conventional constant learning rate algorithm, leading to reliable operation of the drive. Optimal power flow (OPF) is a crucial tool in the operation and planning of modern power systems. However, as power system optimization shifts towards larger-scale frameworks, and with the growing integration of distributed generations, the computational time and memory requirements of solving the alternating current (AC) OPF problems can increase exponentially with system size, posing computational challenges. In recent years, machine learning (ML) has demonstrated notable advantages in efficient computation and has been extensively applied to tackle OPF challenges. In the epoch characterized by the anticipation of autonomous vehicles, the quality of the embedded system software, its reliability, safety, and security is significant. The testing of embedded software is an increasingly significant element of the development process. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the process of testing embedded software in vehicles constitutes a significant area of both research and practical consideration, arising from the escalating complexity of these systems. This paper presents the preliminary development of the AVESYS framework which facilitates the application of open-source artificial intelligence algorithms in the embedded system testing process. The aim of this work is to evaluate its effectiveness in identifying anomalies in the test environment that could potentially affect testing results. The raw data from the test environment, mainly communication signals and readings from temperature, as well as current and voltage sensors are pre-processed and used to train machine learning models. Accurate instantaneous electricity peak load prediction is crucial for efficient capacity planning and cost-effective electricity network establishment. This paper aims to enhance the accuracy of instantaneous peak load forecasting by employing models incorporating various optimization and machine learning (ML) methods. This study examines the impact of independent inputs on peak load estimation through various combinations and subsets using multilinear regression (MLR) equations. This research utilizes input data from 1980 to 2020, including import and export data, population, and gross domestic product (GDP), to forecast the instantaneous electricity peak load as the output value. The effectiveness of these techniques is evaluated based on error metrics, including mean absolute error (MAE), mean square error (MSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), root mean square error (RMSE), and R2. The comparison extends to popular optimization methods, such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), and the newest method in the field, including dandelion optimizer (DO) and gold rush optimizer (GRO). This comparison is made against conventional machine learning methods, such as support vector regression (SVR) and artificial neural network (ANN), in terms of their prediction accuracy. The findings indicate that the ANN and GRO approaches produce the least statistical errors. Furthermore, the correlation matrix indicates a robust positive linear correlation between GDP and instantaneous peak load. Algorithms optimized for high-performance computing, which ensure both speed and accuracy, are crucial for real-time data analysis in heavy-ion physics experiments. The application of neural networks and other machine learning methodologies, which are fast and have high accuracy, in physics experiments has become increasingly popular over recent years. This paper introduces a fast neural network package named ANN4FLES developed in C++, which has been optimized for use on a high-performance computing cluster for the future Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany). The use of neural networks for classifying events during heavy-ion collisions in the CBM experiment is under investigation. This paper provides a detailed description of the application of ANN4FLES in identifying collisions where a quark–gluon plasma (QGP) was produced. The methodology detailed here will be used in the development of a QGP trigger for event selection within the First Level Event Selection (FLES) package for the CBM experiment. Fully-connected and convolutional neural networks have been created for the identification of events containing QGP, which are simulated with the Parton–Hadron–String Dynamics (PHSD) microscopic off-shell transport approach, for central Au + Au collisions at an energy of 31.2 A GeV. Datasets used for artificial-neural-network and machine-learning applications play a vital role in the research and application of such techniques in solving real-life problems. The construction and availability of large datasets to be used in the off-line phase of ANN training is usually a crucial and time-consuming step towards system construction. In this work, a framework for autonomous construction of a diverse, extensive, and open dataset* with built-in redundancy is demonstrated. As part of the framework, a low-cost robot using off-the-shelf components is built that constructs the dataset autonomously. The robot includes a controller network with multiple WiFi-transceiver nodes for collecting received-signal-strength indicators (RSSIs) at various elevation points throughout the building. All nodes are configured with direct internet access to streamline the data collection towards an online database that is constructed as part of this framework. Preliminary validation and analysis of the dataset are discussed, and an exploration of the application domain of the dataset is carried out. During an emergency rescue operation, rescuers have to deal with many different health complications like cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, psychiatric, etc. The identification process of the common health complications in rescue events is not very difficult or time-consuming because the health vital symptoms or primary observations are enough to identify, but it is quite difficult with some complications related to neurology e.g., schizophrenia, epilepsy with non-motor seizures, or retrograde amnesia because they cannot be identified with the trend of health vital data. The symptoms have a wide spectrum and are often non-distinguishable from other types of complications. Further, waiting for results from medical tests like MRI and ECG is time-consuming and not suitable for emergency cases where a quick treatment path is an obvious necessity after the diagnosis. In this paper, we present a novel solution for overcoming these challenges by employing artificial intelligence (AI) models in the diagnostic procedure of neurological complications in rescue situations. The novelty lies in the procedure of generating input features from raw rescue data used in AI models, as the data are not like traditional clinical data collected from hospital repositories. Rather, the data were gathered directly from more than 200,000 rescue cases and required natural language processing techniques to extract meaningful information. A step-by-step analysis of developing multiple AI models that can facilitate the fast identification of neurological complications, in general, is presented in this paper. Advanced data analytics are used to analyze the complete record of 273,183 rescue events in a duration of almost 10 years, including rescuers' analysis of the complications and their diagnostic methods. To develop the detection model, seven different machine learning algorithms-Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Logistic Regression (LR), Naive Bayes (NB) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) were used. Observing the model's performance, we conclude that the neural network and extreme gradient boosting show the best performance in terms of selected evaluation criteria. To utilize this result in practical scenarios, the paper also depicts the possibility of embedding such machine learning models in hardware like FPGA. The goal is to achieve fast detection results, which is a primary requirement in any rescue mission. To boost the operational performance of a non-aqueous DES electrolyte-based vanadium-iron redox flow battery (RFB), our previous work proposed a double-layer porous electrode spliced by carbon paper and graphite felt. However, this electrode's architecture still needs to be further optimized under different operational conditions. Hence, this paper proposes a multi-layer artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict the relationship between vanadium-iron RFB's performance and double-layer electrode structural characteristics. A training dataset of ANN is generated by three-dimensional finite-element numerical simulations of the galvanostatic discharging process. In addition, a genetic algorithm (GA) is coupled to an ANN regression training process for optimizing the model parameters to elevate the accuracy of ANN prediction. The novelty of this work lies in this modified optimal method of a double-layer electrode for non-aqueous RFB driven by a machine learning (ML) model coupled with GA. The comparative result shows that the ML model reaches a satisfactory predictive accuracy, and the mean square error of this model is lower than other popular ML regression models. Based on the known region of operating conditions, the obtained results prove that this well-trained ML algorithm can be used to estimate whether a double-layer electrode should be applied to a non-aqueous vanadium-iron RFB and determine an appropriate thickness ratio for this double-layer electrode. This paper proposes a novel and secure blockchain hyperledger sawtooth-enabled consortium analytical model for smart educational accreditation credential evaluation. Indeed, candidate academic credentials are generated, verified, and validated by the universities and transmitted to the Higher Education Department (HED). The objective is to enable the procedure of credential verification and analyze tamper-proof forged records before validation. For this reason, we designed and created an accreditation analytical model to investigate individual collected credentials from universities and examine candidates' records of credibility using machine learning techniques and maintain all these aspects of analysis and addresses in the distributed storage with a secure hash-encryption (SHA-256) blockchain consortium network, which runs on a peer-to-peer (P2P) structure. In this proposed analytical model, we deployed a blockchain distributed mechanism to investigate the examiner and analyst processes of accreditation credential protection and storage criteria, which are referred to as chaincodes or smart contracts. These chaincodes automate the distributed credential schedule, generation, verification, validation, and monitoring of the overall model nodes' transactions. The chaincodes include candidate registration with the associated university (candidateReg()), certificate-related accreditation credentials update (CIssuanceTrans()), and every node's transactions preservation in the immutable storage (ULedgerAV()) for further investigations. This model simulates the educational benchmark dataset. The result shows the merit of our model. As grid-connected wind farms become more common in the modern power system, the question of how to maximize wind power generation while limiting downtime has been a common issue for researchers around the world. Due to the complexity of wind turbine systems and the difficulty to predict varying wind speeds, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms have become key components when developing controllers and control schemes. Although, in recent years, several review papers on these topics have been published, there are no comprehensive review papers that pertain to both AI and ML in wind turbine control systems available in the literature, especially with respect to the most recently published control techniques. To overcome the drawbacks of the existing literature, an in-depth overview of ML and AI in wind turbine systems is presented in this paper. This paper analyzes the following reviews: (i) why optimizing wind farm power generation is important; (ii) the challenges associated with designing an efficient control scheme for wind farms; (iii) a breakdown of the different types of AI and ML algorithms used in wind farm controllers and control schemes; (iv) AI and ML for wind speed prediction; (v) AI and ML for wind power prediction; (vi) AI and ML for mechanical component monitoring and fault detection; and (vii) AI and ML for electrical fault prevention and detection. This paper will offer researchers and engineers in the wind energy generation field a comprehensive review of the application of AI and ML in the control methodology of offshore and onshore wind farms so that more efficient and robust control schemes can be designed for future wind turbine controllers. Machine learning has the potential to enhance damage detection and prediction in materials science. Machine learning also has the ability to produce highly reliable and accurate representations, which can improve the detection and prediction of damage compared to the traditional knowledge-based approaches. These approaches can be used for a wide range of applications, including material design; predicting material properties; identifying hidden relationships; and classifying microstructures, defects, and damage. However, researchers must carefully consider the appropriateness of various machine learning algorithms, based on the available data, material being studied, and desired knowledge outcomes. In addition, the interpretability of certain machine learning models can be a limitation in materials science, as it may be difficult to understand the reasoning behind predictions. This paper aims to make novel contributions to the field of material engineering by analyzing the compatibility of dynamic response data from various material structures with prominent machine learning approaches. The purpose of this is to help researchers choose models that are both effective and understandable, while also enhancing their understanding of the model's predictions. To achieve this, this paper analyzed the requirements and characteristics of commonly used machine learning algorithms for crack propagation in materials. This analysis assisted the authors in selecting machine learning algorithms (K nearest neighbor, Ridge, and Lasso regression) to evaluate the dynamic response of aluminum and ABS materials, using experimental data from previous studies to train the models. The results showed that natural frequency was the most significant predictor for ABS material, while temperature, natural frequency, and amplitude were the most important predictors for aluminum. Crack location along samples had no significant impact on either material. Future work could involve applying the discussed techniques to a wider range of materials under dynamic loading conditions. The maintenance strategies commonly employed in industrial settings primarily rely on theoretical models that often overlook the actual operating conditions. To address this limitation, the present paper introduces a novel selective predictive maintenance approach based on a machine learning model for a multi-parallel series system, which involves executing multiple missions with breaks between them. For this purpose, the proposed selective maintenance approach consists of finding, at each breakdown, the optimal structure of maintenance activities that provide the desired reliability level of the system for each mission. This decision is based on a component's actual age, as determined by the prediction model. In addition, an optimization model with the Extended Great Deluge (EGD) algorithm uses these predictions as input data to identify the best maintenance level for each component considering the constrained maintenance resources. Structures made of heterogeneous materials, such as composites, often require a multiscale approach when their behavior is simulated using the finite element method. By solving the boundary value problem of the macroscale model, for previously homogenized material properties, the resulting stress maps can be obtained. However, such stress results do not describe the actual behavior of the material and are often significantly different from the actual stresses in the heterogeneous microstructure. Finding high-accuracy stress results for such materials leads to time-consuming analyses in both scales. This paper focuses on the application of machine learning to multiscale analysis of structures made of composite materials, to substantially decrease the time of computations of such localization problems. The presented methodology was validated by a numerical example where a structure made of resin epoxy with randomly distributed short glass fibers was analyzed using a computational multiscale approach. Carefully prepared training data allowed artificial neural networks to learn relationships between two scales and significantly increased the efficiency of the multiscale approach. A methodology to predict key aspects of the structural response of masonry walls under blast loading using artificial neural networks (ANN) is presented in this paper. The failure patterns of masonry walls due to in and out-of-plane loading are complex due to the potential opening and sliding of the mortar joint interfaces between the masonry stones. To capture this response, advanced computational models can be developed requiring a significant amount of resources and computational effort. The article uses an advanced non-linear finite element model to capture the failure response of masonry walls under blast loads, introducing unilateral contact-friction laws between stones and damage mechanics laws for the stones. Parametric finite simulations are automatically conducted using commercial finite element software linked with MATLAB R2019a and Python. A dataset is then created and used to train an artificial neural network. The trained neural network is able to predict the out-of-plane response of the masonry wall for random properties of the blast load (standoff distance and weight). The results indicate that the accuracy of the proposed framework is satisfactory. A comparison of the computational time needed for a single finite element simulation and for a prediction of the out-of-plane response of the wall by the trained neural network highlights the benefits of the proposed machine learning approach in terms of computational time and resources. Therefore, the proposed approach can be used to substitute time consuming explicit dynamic finite element simulations and used as a reliable tool in the fast prediction of the masonry response under blast actions. Sustainable solutions in the building construction industry have emerged as a new method for retrofitting applications in the last two decades. Fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) have garnered much attention among researchers for improving reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The existing design guidelines for FRP-strengthened RC members were developed using empirical methods that are based on specific databases, limiting the accuracy of the predicted results. Therefore, the use of innovative and efficient prediction tools to predict the behavior of FRP-strengthened RC members has become essential. During the last few years, efforts have been progressively focused on the use of machine learning (ML) as a feasible and effective technique for solving various structural engineering problems. Its capability to predict the behavior of complex nonlinear structural systems while considering a wide range of parameters offers a distinctive opportunity to make the behavior of RC members more predictable and accurate. This paper aims to evaluate the current state of using various ML algorithms in RC members strengthened with FRP to enable researchers to determine the capabilities of current solutions as well as to find research gaps to carry out more research to bridge revealed knowledge and practice gaps. Scopus databases were searched using predefined standards. The search revealed ninety-six articles published between 2016 and 2023. Consequently, these articles were analyzed for ML applications in the field of FRP retrofitting, including flexural and shear strengthening of RC beams, flexural strengthening of slabs, confinement and compressive strength of columns, and FRP bond strength. The results reveal that 32% of the reviewed studies focused on the application of ML techniques to the flexural and shear strengthening of RC beams, 32% on the confinement and compressive strength of columns, 6.5% on the flexural strengthening of slabs, 22% on FRP bond strength, 6.5% on materials, and 1% on beam–column joints. This research also revealed that the application of various ML algorithms has shown a significant improvement in resistance prediction accuracy as compared with the existing empirical solutions. Supervised learning techniques were the most favorable learning method due to their good generalization, interpretability, adaptability, and predictive efficiency. In addition, the selection of suitable ML algorithms and optimization techniques is found to be mainly dictated by the nature of the problem and the characteristics of the dataset. Nonetheless, selecting the most appropriate ML model and optimization algorithm for each specific application remains a challenge, given that each algorithm is developed with different principles and methodologies. Most hydrological and water resources researchers prioritize the development of an accurate sediment prediction model. Several conventional techniques have failed to accurately predict suspended sediment. Because of the intricacy, non-stationarity, and nonlinearity of sediment movement behavior in streams and rivers, many techniques fall short. Over the last several years, there have been meaningful theoretical improvements in the understanding of machine learning approaches, vis a vis strategy for the implementation of their processes and uses of the technique for practical and hydrological issues. To produce the desired output, machine learning models and other algorithms have been employed to predict complicated nonlinear connections and patterns of huge input parameters. This paper examines a few key works of the literature on sediment transport prediction while focusing on a variety of machine learning applications. Sediment transport models aided by machine learning have attracted a growing number of researchers in recent years. As a result, they must gain in-depth knowledge of their theory and modeling methodologies. Furthermore, this chapter includes an overview of the machine learning technique and other developing hybrid models that have produced promising outcomes. Experimental results reveal that rocking shallow foundations reduce earthquake-induced force and flexural displacement demands transmitted to structures and can be used as an effective geotechnical seismic isolation mechanism. This paper presents data-driven predictive models for maximum acceleration transmitted to structures founded on rocking shallow foundations during earthquake loading. Results from base-shaking experiments on rocking foundations have been utilized for the development of artificial neural network regression (ANN), k-nearest neighbors regression, support vector regression, random forest regression, adaptive boosting regression, and gradient boosting regression models. Acceleration amplification ratio, defined as the maximum acceleration at the center of gravity of a structure divided by the peak ground acceleration of the earthquake, is considered as the prediction parameter. For five out of six models developed in this study, the overall mean absolute percentage error in predictions in repeated k-fold cross validation tests vary between 0.128 and 0.145, with the ANN model being the most accurate and most consistent. The cross validation mean absolute error in predictions of all six models vary between 0.08 and 0.1, indicating that the maximum acceleration of structures supported by rocking foundations can be predicted within an average error limit of 8% to 10% of the peak ground acceleration of the earthquake. The Monte Carlo neutron transport method is used to accurately estimate various quantities, such as k-eigenvalue and integral neutron flux. However, in the case of estimating a distribution of a desired quantity, the Monte Carlo method does not typically provide continuous distribution. Recently, the functional expansion tally (FET) and kernel density estimation (KDE) methods have been developed to provide a continuous distribution of a Monte Carlo tally. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate a continuous distribution of a quantity in all phase-space variables using a fully connected feedforward artificial neural network (ANN) model with Monte Carlo-based training data. As a proof of concept, a continuous distribution of iterated fission probability (IFP) was estimated by ANN models in two distinct fissile systems. The ANN models were trained on the training data created using the Monte Carlo IFP method. The estimated IFP distributions by the ANN models were compared with the Monte Carlo-based data that include the training data. Additionally, the IFP distributions by the ANN models were also compared with the adjoint angular neutron flux distributions obtained with the deterministic neutron transport code PARTISN. The comparisons showed varying degrees of agreement or discrepancy; however, it was observed that the ANN models learned the general trend of the IFP distributions from the Monte Carlo-based training data. In this paper, the performance of machine learning methods for squirrel cage induction motor broken rotor bar (BRB) fault detection is evaluated. Decision tree classification (DTC), artificial neural network (ANN), and deep learning (DL) methods are developed, applied, and studied to compare their performance in detecting broken rotor bar faults in squirrel cage induction motors. The training data were collected through experimental measurements. The BRB fault features were extracted from measured line-current signatures through a transformation from the time domain to the frequency domain using discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) of the frequency spectrum of the current signal. Eighty percent of the data were used for training the models, and twenty percent were used for testing. A confusion matrix was used to validate the models' performance using accuracy, precision, recall, and f1-scores. The results evidence that the DTC is less load-dependent, and it has better accuracy and precision for both unloaded and loaded squirrel cage induction motors when compared with the DL and ANN methods. The DTC method achieved higher accuracy in the detection of the magnitudes of the twice-frequency sideband components induced in stator currents by BRB faults when compared with the DL and ANN methods. Although the detection accuracy and precision are higher for the loaded motor than the unloaded motor, the DTC method managed to also exhibit a high accuracy for the unloaded current when compared with the DL and ANN methods. The DTC is, therefore, a suitable candidate to detect broken rotor bar faults on trained data for lightly or thoroughly loaded squirrel cage induction motors using the characteristics of the measured line-current signature. Short message services (SMS), microblogging tools, instant message apps, and commercial websites produce numerous short text messages every day. These short text messages are usually guaranteed to reach mass audience with low cost. Spammers take advantage of short texts by sending bulk malicious or unwanted messages. Short texts are difficult to classify because of their shortness, sparsity, rapidness, and informal writing. The effectiveness of the hidden Markov model (HMM) for short text classification has been illustrated in our previous study. However, the HMM has limited capability to handle new words, which are mostly generated by informal writing. In this paper, a hybrid model is proposed to address the informal writing issue by weighting new words for fast short text filtering with high accuracy. The hybrid model consists of an artificial neural network (ANN) and an HMM, which are used for new word weighting and spam filtering, respectively. The weight of a new word is calculated based on the weights of its neighbor, along with the spam and ham (i.e., not spam) probabilities of short text message predicted by the ANN. Performance evaluations on benchmark datasets, including the SMS message data maintained by University of California, Irvine; the movie reviews, and the customer reviews are conducted. The hybrid model operates at a significantly higher speed than deep learning models. The experiment results show that the proposed hybrid model outperforms other prominent machine learning algorithms, achieving a good balance between filtering throughput and accuracy. Fire has significant effects on the residual resistance of steel structures. It is necessary to accurately clarify its effects on Q690 HSS plate girders, which have been widely used. In this paper, the ultimate resistance and effective service resistance of Q690 HSS plate girders after a fire are obtained using material tests and finite element (FE) analysis including parametric studies, where the data of 210 models were collected. The effects of four key parameters (hw/tw ratio, a/hw ratio, exposure temperature and cooling method) on post-fire shear resistance reduction of Q690 HSS plate girders are roughly investigated by individual conditional expectation (ICE), showing exposure temperature is the most important factor. The popular algorithms of machine learning (ML), namely artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector regression (SVR) algorithms, are utilized in model training to predict the reduction factors of both ultimate resistance and effective service resistance. Finally, the results indicate that the prediction using ML shows much better performance than that with traditional ordinary least squares (OLS) regression, and SVR with genetic algorithm (GA) provides the highest prediction accuracy. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the neural, behavioral, and physiological systems of the brain. This disease is also known as tremor. The common symptoms of this disease are a slowness of movement known as 'bradykinesia', loss of automatic movements, speech/writing changes, and difficulty with walking at early stages. To solve these issues and to enhance the diagnostic process of PD, machine learning (ML) algorithms have been implemented for the categorization of subjective disease and healthy controls (HC) with comparable medical appearances. To provide a far-reaching outline of data modalities and artificial intelligence techniques that have been utilized in the analysis and diagnosis of PD, we conducted a literature analysis of research papers published up until 2022. A total of 112 research papers were included in this study, with an examination of their targets, data sources and different types of datasets, ML algorithms, and associated outcomes. The results showed that ML approaches and new biomarkers have a lot of promise for being used in clinical decision-making, resulting in a more systematic and informed diagnosis of PD. Prosthetics and orthotics research, studies, and technologies have been evolving through the years. According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, it is estimated that, globally, 35–40 million people require prosthetics and orthotics usage in daily life. Prosthetics and orthotics demand is increasing due to certain factors. One of the factors is vascular-related disease, which leads to amputation. Prosthetic usage can increase an amputee's quality of life. Therefore, studies of the ergonomic design of prosthetics are important. The ergonomic factor in design delivers prosthetic products that are comfortable for daily use. One way to incorporate the ergonomic design of prosthetics is by studying the human walking gait. This paper presents a multiclassification of human walking gait based on electromyography (EMG) signals using a machine learning method. An EMG sensor was attached to the bicep femoris longus and gastrocnemius lateral head to acquire the EMG signal. The experiment was conducted by volunteers during normal walking activity at various speeds and the movements were segmented as initial contact, which was labeled as initial gait; loading response to the terminal stance, which was labeled as mid-gait; and pre-swing to terminal swing, which was labeled as final gait. The EMG signal was then characterized using an artificial neural network (ANN) and compared to six training accuracy methods, i.e., the Levenberg–Marquardt backpropagation training algorithm, quasi-Newton training method, Bayesian regulation backpropagation training method, gradient descent backpropagation, gradient descent with adaptive learning rate backpropagation, and one-step secant backpropagation. The machine learning study performed well in the classification of three classes of human walking gait with an overall accuracy (training, testing, and validation) of 96% for Levenberg–Marquardt backpropagation. This paper attempts to analyze and assess Yongchuan Xiuya tea quality quickly, accurately, and digitally. The sensory evaluation method was first used to assess Yongchuan Xiuya tea quality, and then near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was obtained, and standard methods were applied to the testing of the chemical components. Next, principal component analysis (PCA) and the correlation coefficient method were used to comprehensively screen out the representative components. Finally, NIRS combined with partial least squares regression (PLSR) and back propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) methods were applied to build quality evaluation models for Yongchuan Xiuya tea, respectively, and external samples were employed to examine the practical application results of the best model. The cumulative variance contribution rate of the first three principal components of the ingredients in tea was 97.73%. Seven components closely related to tea quality were screened out, namely, amino acids, total catechin, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), tea polyphenols, water extracts, epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin (EGC) (p < 0.01). Between the two models established to predict the tea quality, the model built by the PLS method had the better results, whose coefficient of determination of prediction (Rp2) and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) were 0.7955 and 1.2263, respectively, and the best results were obtained by the nonlinear BP-ANN model, whose Rp2 and RMSEP were 0.9315 and 0.6787, respectively. The 10 external Yongchuan Xiuya samples were employed to test the best BP-ANN model, and the results of R2 and RMSEP were 0.9579 and 0.6086, respectively, meaning that the model has good robustness. Therefore, the model established by NIRS combined with the BP-ANN method can be used to assess Yongchuan Xiuya tea quality rapidly, accurately, and digitally, and it can also provide new ideas and methods for evaluating the quality of other teas. Fast and efficient algorithms optimized for high performance computers are crucial for the real-time analysis of data in heavy-ion physics experiments. Furthermore, the application of neural networks and other machine learning techniques has become more popular in physics experiments over the last years. For that reason, a fast neural network package called ANN4FLES is developed in C++, which will be optimized to be used on a high performance computer farm for the future Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany). This paper describes the first application of ANN4FLES used in the reconstruction chain of the CBM experiment to replace the existing particle competition between K s -mesons and Λ -hyperons in the KF Particle Finder by a neural network based approach. The raw classification performance of the neural network reaches over 98% on the testing set. Increasingly available open medical and health datasets encourage data-driven research with a promise of improving patient care through knowledge discovery and algorithm development. Among efficient approaches to such high-dimensional problems are a number of machine learning methods, which are applied in this paper to pressure ulcer prediction in modular critical care data. An inherent property of many health-related datasets is a high number of irregularly sampled time-variant and scarcely populated features, often exceeding the number of observations. Although machine learning methods are known to work well under such circumstances, many choices regarding model and data processing exist. In particular, this paper address both theoretical and practical aspects related to the application of six classification models to pressure ulcers, while utilizing one of the largest available Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV) databases. Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia is a type of cancer that occurs when abnormal white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow which do not function properly, crowding out healthy cells and weakening the immunity of the body and thus its ability to resist infections. It spreads quickly in children's bodies, and if not treated promptly it may lead to death. The manual detection of this disease is a tedious and slow task. Machine learning and deep learning techniques are faster than manual detection and more accurate. In this paper, a deep feature selection-based approach ResRandSVM is proposed for the detection of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in blood smear images. The proposed approach uses seven deep-learning models: ResNet152, VGG16, DenseNet121, MobileNetV2, InceptionV3, EfficientNetB0 and ResNet50 for deep feature extraction from blood smear images. After that, three feature selection methods are used to extract valuable and important features: analysis of variance (ANOVA), principal component analysis (PCA), and Random Forest. Then the selected feature map is fed to four different classifiers, Adaboost, Support Vector Machine, Artificial Neural Network and Naïve Bayes models, to classify the images into leukemia and normal images. The model performs best with a combination of ResNet50 as a feature extractor, Random Forest as feature selection and Support Vector Machine as a classifier with an accuracy of 0.900, precision of 0.902, recall of 0.957 and F1-score of 0.929. The poor surface roughness associated with additively manufactured parts can influence the surface integrity and geometric tolerances of produced components. In response to this issue, laser polishing (LP) has emerged as a potential technique for improving the surface finish and producing parts with enhanced properties. Many studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of LP on parts produced using additive manufacturing. The results showed that applying such a unique treatment can significantly enhance the overall performance of the part. In LP processes, the surface of the part is re-melted by the laser, resulting in smaller peaks and shallower valleys, which enable the development of smoother surfaces with the help of gravity and surface tension. Precise selection of laser parameters is essential to achieve optimal enhancement in the surface finish, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the treated parts. This paper aims to compile state-of-the-art knowledge in LP of additively manufactured metals and presents the optimal process parameters experimentally and modeling using artificial machine learning. No study has been reported to use machine learning methods to predict the full-range test curves of circular CFST columns. In this paper, the long short-term memory (LSTM) network was introduced to calculate the axially compressive load–strain curves of the circular CFST columns according to an experiment database of limited scale. To improve the feasibility of input data for the recurrent neural network algorithm, data preprocessing methods and data configurations were discussed. The prediction results indicate that the LSTM network provides more accurate estimations compared with the artificial neural networks, random forest and support vector regression. Meanwhile, this method can be used to calculate the mechanical properties including the elastic modulus, ultimate bearing capacity, and the ductility of the columns with acceptable accuracy for engineering practice (the prediction error within 20%). Three-dimensional (3-d) magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) modeling is a key method for studying the interplanetary solar wind. In this paper, we introduce a new 3-d MHD solar wind model driven by the self-consistent boundary condition obtained from multiple observations and the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) machine learning technique. At the inner boundary, the magnetic field is derived using the magnetogram and potential field source surface extrapolation; the electron density is derived from the polarized brightness (pB) observations, the velocity can be deduced by an ANN using both the magnetogram and pB observations, and the temperature is derived from the magnetic field and electron density by a self-consistent method. Then, the 3-d interplanetary solar wind from CR2057 to CR2062 is modeled by the new model with the self-consistent boundary conditions. The modeling results present various observational characteristics at different latitudes, and are in better agreement with both the OMNI and Ulysses observations compared to our previous MHD model based only on photospheric magnetic field observations. Stimulus Equivalence (SE) is a behavioural phenomenon in which organisms respond functionally to stimuli without explicit training. SE provides a framework in the experimental analysis of behaviour to study language, symbolic behaviour, and cognition. It is also a frequently discussed matter in interdisciplinary research, linking behaviour analysis with linguistics and neuroscience. Previous research has attempted to replicate SE with computational agents, mostly based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models. The aim of this paper was to analyse the effect of three Training Structures (TSs) on stimulus class formation in a simulation with ANNs as computational agents performing a classification task, in a matching-to-sample procedure. Twelve simulations were carried out as a product of the implementation of four ANN architectures on the three TSs. SE was not achieved, but two agents showed an emergent response on half of the transitivity test pairs on linear sequence TSs and reflexivity on one member of the class. The results suggested that an ANN with a large enough number of units in a hidden layer can perform a limited number of emergent relations within specific experimental conditions: reflexivity on B and transitivity on AC, when pairs AB and BC are trained on a three-member stimulus class and tested in a classification task. Online microwave drying process monitoring has been challenging due to the incompatibility of metal components with microwaves. This paper developed a microwave drying system based on online machine vision, which realized real-time extraction and measurement of images, weight, and temperature. An image-processing algorithm was developed to capture material shrinkage characteristics in real time. Constant-temperature microwave drying experiments were conducted, and the artificial neural network (ANN) and extreme learning machine (ELM) were utilized to model and predict the moisture content of materials during the drying process based on the degree of material shrinkage. This paper proposes a non-parametric technique of option valuation and hedging. Here, we replicate the extended Black–Scholes pricing model for the exotic barrier options and their corresponding Greeks using the fully connected feed-forward neural network. Our methodology involves some benchmarking experiments, which result in an optimal neural network hyperparameter that effectively prices the barrier options and facilitates their option Greeks extraction. We compare the results from the optimal NN model to those produced by other machine learning models, such as the random forest and the polynomial regression; the output highlights the accuracy and the efficiency of our proposed methodology in this option pricing problem. The results equally show that the artificial neural network can effectively and accurately learn the extended Black–Scholes model from a given simulated dataset, and this concept can similarly be applied in the valuation of complex financial derivatives without analytical solutions. This paper proposes a deep learning model based on an artificial neural network with a single hidden layer for predicting the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. The hidden layer includes a regularization term that prevents overfitting and reduces the model complexity. The purposed learning model achieved higher prediction accuracy and lower loss than four conventional machine learning techniques. A dimensionality reduction method was used to select the most relevant features from 74 gene expression profiles for training the learning models. The analysis of variance test was performed to identify the statistical difference between the mean of the proposed model and the compared classifiers. Increased demand for fast edge computation and privacy concerns have shifted researchers' focus towards a type of distributed learning known as federated learning (FL). Recently, much research has been carried out on FL; however, a major challenge is the need to tackle the high diversity in different clients. Our research shows that using highly diverse data sets in FL can lead to low accuracy of some local models, which can be categorised as anomalous behaviour. In this paper, we present FedBranched, a clustering-based framework that uses probabilistic methods to create branches of clients and assigns their respective global models. Branching is performed using hidden Markov model clustering (HMM), and a round of branching depends on the diversity of the data. Clustering is performed on Euclidean distances of mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) obtained from each client at the end of pre-defined communication rounds. The proposed framework was implemented on substation-level energy data with nine clients for short-term load forecasting using an artificial neural network (ANN). FedBranched took two clustering rounds and resulted in two different branches having individual global models. Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency, is extremely volatile and hence needs a better model for its pricing. In the literature, many researchers have studied the effect of data normalization on regression analysis for stock price prediction. How has data normalization affected Bitcoin price prediction? To answer this question, this study analyzed the prediction accuracy of a Legendre polynomial-based neural network optimized by the mutated climb monkey algorithm using nine existing data normalization techniques. A new dual normalization technique was proposed to improve the efficiency of this model. The 10 normalization techniques were evaluated using 15 error metrics using a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach called technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The effect of the top three normalization techniques along with the min–max normalization was further studied for Chebyshev, Laguerre, and trigonometric polynomial-based neural networks in three different datasets. The prediction accuracy of the 16 models (each of the four polynomial-based neural networks with four different normalization techniques) was calculated using 15 error metrics. A 16 × 15 TOPSIS analysis was conducted to rank the models. The convergence plot and the ranking of the models indicated that data normalization plays a significant role in the prediction capability of a Bitcoin price predictor. This paper can significantly contribute to the research with a new normalization technique for utilization in varied fields of research. The constant evolution of many urban areas ultimately reaches a point where the current infrastructure cannot further serve the needs of citizens. In the case of transport networks, congested roads, increased delay, and low level of service are among the indicators of a need for road infrastructure upgrade. Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in Greece with a population of over 1 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area. Currently, a significant share of the city's traffic demand is served via its ring road, whose capacity is set to be enhanced through the construction of a flyover highway with the simultaneous upgrade of the existing ring road. The current study aims at investigating the key factors determining the final route choice of drivers between the two road axes. To that end, data from a combined revealed and stated preference survey targeting car drivers were collected, which were later exploited as the basis for the development of binary route choice regression and machine learning models. The results reveal that drivers' choice is affected by criteria such as total travel time, the probability of accident occurrence, and closure time due to accident. The results of this paper could prove beneficial to transport researchers in forecasting drivers' behavior in terms of route choice and to practitioners during the planning phase of similar infrastructure projects. As an essential data-driven model, machine learning can simulate runoff based on meteorological data at the watershed level. It has been widely used in the simulation of hydrological runoff. Considering the impact of snow cover on runoff in high-altitude mountainous areas, based on remote sensing data and atmospheric reanalysis data, in this paper we established a runoff simulation model with a random forest model and ANN (artificial neural network) model for the Xiying River Basin in the western Qilian region The verification of the measured data showed that the NSE (Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency), RMSE (root mean square error), and PBIAS (percent bias) values of the random forest model and ANN model were 0.701 and 0.748, 6.228 m3/s and 4.554 m3/s, and 4.903% and 8.329%, respectively. Considering the influence of ice and snow on runoff, the simulation accuracy of both the random forest model and ANN model was improved during the period of significant decreases in the annual snow and ice water equivalent in the Xiying River Basin from April to May, after the snow remote sensing data were introduced into the model. Specifically, for the random forest model, the NSE increased by 0.099, the RMSE decreased by 0.369 m3/s, and the PBIAS decreased by 1.689%. For the ANN model, the NSE increased by 0.207, the RMSE decreased by 0.700 m3/s, and the PBIAS decreased by 1.103%. In this study, based on remote sensing data and atmospheric reanalysis data, the random forest model and ANN model were used to effectively simulate hydrological runoff processes in high-altitude mountainous areas without observational data. In particular, the accuracy of the machine learning simulations of snowmelt runoff (especially during the snowmelt period) was effectively improved by introducing the snow remote sensing data, which can provide a methodological reference for the simulation and prediction of snowmelt runoff in alpine mountains. One of the practical ways to overcome the adverse environmental effects of plastic bottle waste is to implement bottles into concrete, one of the most widely used materials in the construction industry. Plastic bottles are mainly made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and can be used as a fiber to reinforce concrete. In recent years, PET fiber-reinforced concrete (PFRC) has attracted researcher attention, and several experimental studies have been conducted. This paper aims to present the benefits of using PET fiber as a reinforcing element in concrete using a machine learning approach. By considering the effect of PET fibers in concrete, engineers and stakeholders may be encouraged to further use these recycled materials. The proposed network was successfully able to capture the response of PFRC with high accuracy (mean squared error (MSE) of 7.11 MPa and R coefficient of 98%). The results of the proposed network show that the amount of PET fiber usage in concrete has a significant effect on the compressive strength of PFRC. Moreover, the PFRC's response considering the variation of mechanical and geometrical properties of PET fiber mainly depends on the fiber's shape. Advancements in renewable energy technology have significantly reduced the consumer dependence on conventional energy sources for power generation. Solar energy has proven to be a sustainable source of power generation compared to other renewable energy sources. The performance of a photovoltaic (PV) system is highly dependent on the amount of solar penetration to the solar cell, the type of climatic season, the temperature of the surroundings, and the environmental humidity. Unfortunately, every renewable's technology has its limitation. Consequently, this prevents the system from operating to a maximum or optimally. Achieving a precise PV system output power is crucial to overcoming solar power output instability and intermittency performance. This paper discusses an intensive review of machine learning, followed by the types of neural network models under supervised machine learning implemented in photovoltaic power forecasting. The literature of past researchers is collected, mainly focusing on the duration of forecasts for very short-, short-, and long-term forecasts in a photovoltaic system. The performance of forecasting is also evaluated according to a different type of input parameter and time-step resolution.
