Active distribution grids that contain energy sources (so-called distributed generation or DG) are nowadays a reality. Besides the many benefits DGs bring to the distribution grid, some challenges are associated with their integration. Since there are DGs now in the distribution grid, the occurrence of islanding operation is possible. Since an islanding operation can be dangerous, it is necessary to have an effective method to detect it. In the last decade, scientists have made a great effort to develop and test various islanding detection methods (IDMs). Many approaches have been tested, and the methods based on computational intelligence (CI) have shown great potential. Among them, artificial neural networks (ANNs) gained most of the research attention. This paper focuses on ANN application for islanding detection. It gives an exhaustive review of the ANN types used for islanding detection, the types of input data, and their transformation to fit the ANNs. Furthermore, various applications based on specific input data, preprocessing types, different learning algorithms, real-time implementation, and various distribution models used for ANN are reviewed. This paper investigates the potential of ANNs to enhance islanding detection accuracy, reduce non-detection zone (NDZ), and contribute to an overall efficient detection method. In this paper, we propose a learning model for tracking the isolines of fluid based on the physical properties of particles in particle-based fluid simulations. Our method involves analyzing which weights, closely related to surface tracking among the various physical properties of fluid particles, are significant. These weights are used as input values for the learning algorithm, enabling relatively accurate isoline tracking. In addition, compared to existing learning models such as linear regression, LSTM (long short-term memory), and learning representation (1-layer) models, our method obtained superior surface tracking results without accumulating errors. By using our proposed network structure to track the fluid surface, it learns and predicts values derived from existing fluid simulation algorithms, eliminating the need for computational processes for level-set values and enabling real-time surface tracking. As the scale of the simulation increases, our method significantly reduces the time and resources consumed compared to traditional methods and can track the fluid surface without additional resource consumption. Furthermore, due to our method's simple network structure, the time consumed in the initial process of loading the model into memory is faster than models such as CNN and LSTM. Our proposed model occupies less than 30 kb of storage space, making it suitable for use in middleware. Saltwater intrusion is an essential problem in estuaries that can threaten the ecological environment, especially in high-salinity situations. Therefore in this paper, traditional multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling are applied to forecast overall and high salinity in the Lower Scheldt Estuary, Belgium. Mutual information (MI) and conditional mutual information (CMI) are used to select optimal driving forces (DFs), with the daily discharge (Q), daily water temperature (WT), and daily sea level (SL) selected as the main DFs. Next, we analyze whether applying a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to remove the noise from the original time series improves the results. Here, the DWT is applied in Signal-hybrid (SH) and Within-hybrid (WH) frameworks. Both the MLR and ANN models demonstrate satisfactory performance in daily overall salinity simulation over the Scheldt Estuary. The relatively complex ANN models outperform MLR because of their capabilities of capturing complex interactions. Because the nonlinear relationship between salinity and DFs is variable at different locations, the performance of the MLR models in the midstream region is far inferior to that in the downstream region during spring and winter. The results reveal that the application of DWT enhances simulation of both overall and high salinity in this region, especially for the ANN model with the WH framework. With the effect of Q decline or SL rise, the salinity in the middle Scheldt Estuary increases more significantly, and the ANN models are more sensitive to these perturbations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Along with seaports automation, there is growing interest in the automation of Grab-Type Ship Unloader (GTSU) that unloads coal and iron ore from bulk carriers. Autonomous unloading operations of GTSU offer the potential for significant productivity improvement and cost savings. In this paper, an AI model trained with manual operation data was designed for GTSU automation operation, and the AI model was verified through the equation-of-motion-based GTSU operation simulator. The operation data of hoist, grab, and trolley were predicted by training the designed AI model with the manual operation data of GTSU. Before applying the predicted data to the actual equipment, the predicted driving data was verified using the equation-of-motion-based GTSU operation simulator. The AI prediction model was designed using the Multi-Layer Perception network, a type of artificial neural network. The AI prediction model was evaluated with the Mean-Squared Error indicator, and the validation loss was found to be less than 0.02. In addition, verification of the prediction data was performed using the GTSU dynamics-based simulator. The Mean Relative Error was up to 0.50, and the R2 score value exceeded 0.92, indicating that the model is effective in predicting operation data. This paper presents a review of papers specifically focused on the use of both numerical and machine learning methods for groundwater level modelling. In the reviewed papers, machine learning models (also called data-driven models) are used to improve the prediction or speed process of existing numerical modelling. When long runtimes inhibit the use of numerical models, machine learning models can be a valid alternative, capable of reducing the time for model development and calibration without sacrificing accuracy of detail in groundwater level forecasting. The results of this review highlight that machine learning models do not offer a complete representation of the physical system, such as flux estimates or total water balance and, thus, cannot be used to substitute numerical models in large study areas; however, they are affordable tools to improve predictions at specific observation wells. Numerical and machine learning models can be successfully used as complementary to each other as a powerful groundwater management tool. The machine learning techniques can be used to improve calibration of numerical models, whereas results of numerical models allow us to understand the physical system and select proper input variables for machine learning models. Machine learning models can be integrated in decision-making processes when rapid and effective solutions for groundwater management need to be considered. In recent years, artificial neural networks have been widely used in the fault diagnosis of rolling bearings. To realize real-time diagnosis with high accuracy of the fault of a rolling bearing, in this paper, a bearing fault diagnosis model was designed based on the combination of VMD and ANN, which ensures a higher fault prediction accuracy with less computational time. This paper works from two aspects, including fault feature extraction and neural network structural parameter optimization to obtain an ANN bearing fault diagnosis model with high performance. The raw vibration signals of 10 fault types were divided into training, verification and testing datasets by the random step increment slip method. The variational mode decomposition method was used to decompose the raw vibration signal into several intrinsic mode functions. A new definition of the energy of each intrinsic mode function based on discrete Fourier transform and information entropy method were used as the input for the artificial neural network. Furthermore, the structural parameters of the artificial neural network were designed to obtain a high-performance neural network. The artificial neural network used in this paper had three hidden layers and 13 neurons in each hidden layer. Compared with several machine and deep learning algorithms, the artificial neural network can better fulfill the classification task of rolling bearing fault types with a mean prediction accuracy of 99.3% and computation time of 2.4 s based on a small training dataset. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are machine learning algorithms inspired by the structure and function of the human brain. Their popularity has increased in recent years due to their ability to learn and improve through experience, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. ANNs are often used as part of deep learning, which enables them to learn, transfer knowledge, make predictions, and take action. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of ANNs and explore potential directions for future research. To achieve this, the paper analyzes 10,661 articles and 35,973 keywords from various journals using a text-mining approach. The results of the analysis show that there is a high level of interest in topics related to machine learning, deep learning, and ANNs and that research in this field is increasingly focusing on areas such as optimization techniques, feature extraction and selection, and clustering. The study presented in this paper is motivated by the need for a framework to guide the continued study and development of ANNs. By providing insights into the current state of research on ANNs, this paper aims to promote a deeper understanding of ANNs and to facilitate the development of new techniques and applications for ANNs in the future. Obtaining mathematical models of nonlinear cyber–physical systems for use in controller design is both difficult and time consuming. In this paper, an ANN-based method is proposed to design a controller for a nonlinear system that does not require a mathematical model. The developed ANN-based control algorithm is implemented directly on a real-time field controller, and its performance is evaluated without the use of auxiliary devices, such as PCs or workstations. By executing machine learning algorithms on local devices or embedded systems, edge artificial intelligence (Edge AI) with transfer learning gives priority to processing data at the source, minimizing the necessity for continuous connectivity to remote servers. The control algorithm was developed using the Matlab Simulink environment. The first and second ANNs were cascaded, wherein the first ANN computes the appropriate pressure signal for the given displacement, while the second predicts the force based on the pressure value from the first ANN. Subsequently, the ANN-based control algorithm was converted to SCL code using the Simulink PLC Coder and deployed on the PLC for operation. The algorithm was tested using two different scenarios. The conducted tests demonstrated the successful prediction of pressure signals corresponding to the targeted displacement values and accurate estimation of force values. This paper presents a new approach for the online estimation of stator and rotor resistance of induction motors for speed sensorless vector-controlled drives, using feed-forward artificial neural networks with advanced adaptive learning rates. For the rotor resistance estimation, a neural network model based on rotor speed and stator currents is developed. The rotor flux linkages acquired from the voltage model are compared with the neural network model. The feed-forward neural network employs an adaptive learning rate as the function of the obtained error during training for quick convergence with minimal estimation error. A two-layered neural network model based on the stator voltage and current equations is developed for the stator resistance estimation. The d-q axes stator currents obtained from the developed model are compared with the acquired d-q axes stator currents. For the fast convergence with minimal estimation error, an adaptive learning rate as the function of error is adopted during training. Furthermore, the neural network estimates the induction motor's speed. The simulation and experimental results justify that the developed algorithms track variation in the resistances quickly and precisely along with the speed as compared with the conventional constant learning rate algorithm, leading to reliable operation of the drive. Optimal power flow (OPF) is a crucial tool in the operation and planning of modern power systems. However, as power system optimization shifts towards larger-scale frameworks, and with the growing integration of distributed generations, the computational time and memory requirements of solving the alternating current (AC) OPF problems can increase exponentially with system size, posing computational challenges. In recent years, machine learning (ML) has demonstrated notable advantages in efficient computation and has been extensively applied to tackle OPF challenges. In the epoch characterized by the anticipation of autonomous vehicles, the quality of the embedded system software, its reliability, safety, and security is significant. The testing of embedded software is an increasingly significant element of the development process. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the process of testing embedded software in vehicles constitutes a significant area of both research and practical consideration, arising from the escalating complexity of these systems. This paper presents the preliminary development of the AVESYS framework which facilitates the application of open-source artificial intelligence algorithms in the embedded system testing process. The aim of this work is to evaluate its effectiveness in identifying anomalies in the test environment that could potentially affect testing results. The raw data from the test environment, mainly communication signals and readings from temperature, as well as current and voltage sensors are pre-processed and used to train machine learning models. Datasets used for artificial-neural-network and machine-learning applications play a vital role in the research and application of such techniques in solving real-life problems. The construction and availability of large datasets to be used in the off-line phase of ANN training is usually a crucial and time-consuming step towards system construction. In this work, a framework for autonomous construction of a diverse, extensive, and open dataset* with built-in redundancy is demonstrated. As part of the framework, a low-cost robot using off-the-shelf components is built that constructs the dataset autonomously. The robot includes a controller network with multiple WiFi-transceiver nodes for collecting received-signal-strength indicators (RSSIs) at various elevation points throughout the building. All nodes are configured with direct internet access to streamline the data collection towards an online database that is constructed as part of this framework. Preliminary validation and analysis of the dataset are discussed, and an exploration of the application domain of the dataset is carried out. To boost the operational performance of a non-aqueous DES electrolyte-based vanadium-iron redox flow battery (RFB), our previous work proposed a double-layer porous electrode spliced by carbon paper and graphite felt. However, this electrode's architecture still needs to be further optimized under different operational conditions. Hence, this paper proposes a multi-layer artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict the relationship between vanadium-iron RFB's performance and double-layer electrode structural characteristics. A training dataset of ANN is generated by three-dimensional finite-element numerical simulations of the galvanostatic discharging process. In addition, a genetic algorithm (GA) is coupled to an ANN regression training process for optimizing the model parameters to elevate the accuracy of ANN prediction. The novelty of this work lies in this modified optimal method of a double-layer electrode for non-aqueous RFB driven by a machine learning (ML) model coupled with GA. The comparative result shows that the ML model reaches a satisfactory predictive accuracy, and the mean square error of this model is lower than other popular ML regression models. Based on the known region of operating conditions, the obtained results prove that this well-trained ML algorithm can be used to estimate whether a double-layer electrode should be applied to a non-aqueous vanadium-iron RFB and determine an appropriate thickness ratio for this double-layer electrode. This paper proposes a novel and secure blockchain hyperledger sawtooth-enabled consortium analytical model for smart educational accreditation credential evaluation. Indeed, candidate academic credentials are generated, verified, and validated by the universities and transmitted to the Higher Education Department (HED). The objective is to enable the procedure of credential verification and analyze tamper-proof forged records before validation. For this reason, we designed and created an accreditation analytical model to investigate individual collected credentials from universities and examine candidates' records of credibility using machine learning techniques and maintain all these aspects of analysis and addresses in the distributed storage with a secure hash-encryption (SHA-256) blockchain consortium network, which runs on a peer-to-peer (P2P) structure. In this proposed analytical model, we deployed a blockchain distributed mechanism to investigate the examiner and analyst processes of accreditation credential protection and storage criteria, which are referred to as chaincodes or smart contracts. These chaincodes automate the distributed credential schedule, generation, verification, validation, and monitoring of the overall model nodes' transactions. The chaincodes include candidate registration with the associated university (candidateReg()), certificate-related accreditation credentials update (CIssuanceTrans()), and every node's transactions preservation in the immutable storage (ULedgerAV()) for further investigations. This model simulates the educational benchmark dataset. The result shows the merit of our model. Structures made of heterogeneous materials, such as composites, often require a multiscale approach when their behavior is simulated using the finite element method. By solving the boundary value problem of the macroscale model, for previously homogenized material properties, the resulting stress maps can be obtained. However, such stress results do not describe the actual behavior of the material and are often significantly different from the actual stresses in the heterogeneous microstructure. Finding high-accuracy stress results for such materials leads to time-consuming analyses in both scales. This paper focuses on the application of machine learning to multiscale analysis of structures made of composite materials, to substantially decrease the time of computations of such localization problems. The presented methodology was validated by a numerical example where a structure made of resin epoxy with randomly distributed short glass fibers was analyzed using a computational multiscale approach. Carefully prepared training data allowed artificial neural networks to learn relationships between two scales and significantly increased the efficiency of the multiscale approach. A methodology to predict key aspects of the structural response of masonry walls under blast loading using artificial neural networks (ANN) is presented in this paper. The failure patterns of masonry walls due to in and out-of-plane loading are complex due to the potential opening and sliding of the mortar joint interfaces between the masonry stones. To capture this response, advanced computational models can be developed requiring a significant amount of resources and computational effort. The article uses an advanced non-linear finite element model to capture the failure response of masonry walls under blast loads, introducing unilateral contact-friction laws between stones and damage mechanics laws for the stones. Parametric finite simulations are automatically conducted using commercial finite element software linked with MATLAB R2019a and Python. A dataset is then created and used to train an artificial neural network. The trained neural network is able to predict the out-of-plane response of the masonry wall for random properties of the blast load (standoff distance and weight). The results indicate that the accuracy of the proposed framework is satisfactory. A comparison of the computational time needed for a single finite element simulation and for a prediction of the out-of-plane response of the wall by the trained neural network highlights the benefits of the proposed machine learning approach in terms of computational time and resources. Therefore, the proposed approach can be used to substitute time consuming explicit dynamic finite element simulations and used as a reliable tool in the fast prediction of the masonry response under blast actions. Most hydrological and water resources researchers prioritize the development of an accurate sediment prediction model. Several conventional techniques have failed to accurately predict suspended sediment. Because of the intricacy, non-stationarity, and nonlinearity of sediment movement behavior in streams and rivers, many techniques fall short. Over the last several years, there have been meaningful theoretical improvements in the understanding of machine learning approaches, vis a vis strategy for the implementation of their processes and uses of the technique for practical and hydrological issues. To produce the desired output, machine learning models and other algorithms have been employed to predict complicated nonlinear connections and patterns of huge input parameters. This paper examines a few key works of the literature on sediment transport prediction while focusing on a variety of machine learning applications. Sediment transport models aided by machine learning have attracted a growing number of researchers in recent years. As a result, they must gain in-depth knowledge of their theory and modeling methodologies. Furthermore, this chapter includes an overview of the machine learning technique and other developing hybrid models that have produced promising outcomes. Fire has significant effects on the residual resistance of steel structures. It is necessary to accurately clarify its effects on Q690 HSS plate girders, which have been widely used. In this paper, the ultimate resistance and effective service resistance of Q690 HSS plate girders after a fire are obtained using material tests and finite element (FE) analysis including parametric studies, where the data of 210 models were collected. The effects of four key parameters (hw/tw ratio, a/hw ratio, exposure temperature and cooling method) on post-fire shear resistance reduction of Q690 HSS plate girders are roughly investigated by individual conditional expectation (ICE), showing exposure temperature is the most important factor. The popular algorithms of machine learning (ML), namely artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector regression (SVR) algorithms, are utilized in model training to predict the reduction factors of both ultimate resistance and effective service resistance. Finally, the results indicate that the prediction using ML shows much better performance than that with traditional ordinary least squares (OLS) regression, and SVR with genetic algorithm (GA) provides the highest prediction accuracy. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the neural, behavioral, and physiological systems of the brain. This disease is also known as tremor. The common symptoms of this disease are a slowness of movement known as 'bradykinesia', loss of automatic movements, speech/writing changes, and difficulty with walking at early stages. To solve these issues and to enhance the diagnostic process of PD, machine learning (ML) algorithms have been implemented for the categorization of subjective disease and healthy controls (HC) with comparable medical appearances. To provide a far-reaching outline of data modalities and artificial intelligence techniques that have been utilized in the analysis and diagnosis of PD, we conducted a literature analysis of research papers published up until 2022. A total of 112 research papers were included in this study, with an examination of their targets, data sources and different types of datasets, ML algorithms, and associated outcomes. The results showed that ML approaches and new biomarkers have a lot of promise for being used in clinical decision-making, resulting in a more systematic and informed diagnosis of PD. Prosthetics and orthotics research, studies, and technologies have been evolving through the years. According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, it is estimated that, globally, 35–40 million people require prosthetics and orthotics usage in daily life. Prosthetics and orthotics demand is increasing due to certain factors. One of the factors is vascular-related disease, which leads to amputation. Prosthetic usage can increase an amputee's quality of life. Therefore, studies of the ergonomic design of prosthetics are important. The ergonomic factor in design delivers prosthetic products that are comfortable for daily use. One way to incorporate the ergonomic design of prosthetics is by studying the human walking gait. This paper presents a multiclassification of human walking gait based on electromyography (EMG) signals using a machine learning method. An EMG sensor was attached to the bicep femoris longus and gastrocnemius lateral head to acquire the EMG signal. The experiment was conducted by volunteers during normal walking activity at various speeds and the movements were segmented as initial contact, which was labeled as initial gait; loading response to the terminal stance, which was labeled as mid-gait; and pre-swing to terminal swing, which was labeled as final gait. The EMG signal was then characterized using an artificial neural network (ANN) and compared to six training accuracy methods, i.e., the Levenberg–Marquardt backpropagation training algorithm, quasi-Newton training method, Bayesian regulation backpropagation training method, gradient descent backpropagation, gradient descent with adaptive learning rate backpropagation, and one-step secant backpropagation. The machine learning study performed well in the classification of three classes of human walking gait with an overall accuracy (training, testing, and validation) of 96% for Levenberg–Marquardt backpropagation. No study has been reported to use machine learning methods to predict the full-range test curves of circular CFST columns. In this paper, the long short-term memory (LSTM) network was introduced to calculate the axially compressive load–strain curves of the circular CFST columns according to an experiment database of limited scale. To improve the feasibility of input data for the recurrent neural network algorithm, data preprocessing methods and data configurations were discussed. The prediction results indicate that the LSTM network provides more accurate estimations compared with the artificial neural networks, random forest and support vector regression. Meanwhile, this method can be used to calculate the mechanical properties including the elastic modulus, ultimate bearing capacity, and the ductility of the columns with acceptable accuracy for engineering practice (the prediction error within 20%). Three-dimensional (3-d) magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) modeling is a key method for studying the interplanetary solar wind. In this paper, we introduce a new 3-d MHD solar wind model driven by the self-consistent boundary condition obtained from multiple observations and the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) machine learning technique. At the inner boundary, the magnetic field is derived using the magnetogram and potential field source surface extrapolation; the electron density is derived from the polarized brightness (pB) observations, the velocity can be deduced by an ANN using both the magnetogram and pB observations, and the temperature is derived from the magnetic field and electron density by a self-consistent method. Then, the 3-d interplanetary solar wind from CR2057 to CR2062 is modeled by the new model with the self-consistent boundary conditions. The modeling results present various observational characteristics at different latitudes, and are in better agreement with both the OMNI and Ulysses observations compared to our previous MHD model based only on photospheric magnetic field observations. Affected by shooting angle and light intensity, shooting through transparent media may cause light reflections in an image and influence picture quality, which has a negative effect on the research of computer vision tasks. In this paper, we propose a Residual Attention Based Reflection Removal Network (RABRRN) to tackle the issue of single image reflection removal. We hold that reflection removal is essentially an image separation problem sensitive to both spatial and channel features. Therefore, we integrate spatial attention and channel attention into the model to enhance spatial and channel feature representation. For a more feasible solution to solve the problem of gradient disappearance in the iterative training of deep neural networks, the attention module is combined with a residual network to design a residual attention module so that the performance of reflection removal can be ameliorated. In addition, we establish a reflection image dataset named the SCAU Reflection Image Dataset (SCAU-RID), providing sufficient real training data. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a PSNR of 23.787 dB and an SSIM value of 0.885 from four benchmark datasets. Developing accurate and interpretable models to forecast concrete's self-healing behavior is of interest to material engineers, scientists, and civil engineering contractors. Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence are powerful tools that allow constructing high-precision predictions, yet often considered "black box" methods due to their complexity. Those approaches are commonly used for the modeling of mechanical properties of concrete with exceptional accuracy; however, there are few studies dealing with the application of ML for the self-healing of cementitious materials. This paper proposes a pioneering study on the utilization of ML for predicting post-fire self-healing of concrete. A large database is constructed based on the literature studies. Twelve input variables are analyzed: w/c, age of concrete, amount of cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, peak loading temperature, duration of peak loading temperature, cooling regime, duration of cooling, curing regime, duration of curing, and specimen volume. The output of the model is the compressive strength recovery, being one of the self-healing efficiency indicators. Four ML methods are optimized and compared based on their performance error: Support Vector Machines (SVM), Regression Trees (RT), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), and Ensemble of Regression Trees (ET). Monte Carlo analysis is conducted to verify the stability of the selected model. All ML approaches demonstrate satisfying precision, twice as good as linear regression. The ET model is found to be the most optimal with the highest prediction accuracy and sufficient robustness. Featured Application: This paper aims at proposing a machine learning methodology for creating a parametric transfer function of unitary operations, to be applied in the real-time evaluation of sequenced operations. This methodology will be applied to the real-time evaluation of induced structural distortions when printing stiffeners, for any chosen printing operation sequencing. For better designing manufacturing processes, surrogate models were widely considered in the past, where the effect of different material and process parameters was considered from the use of a parametric solution. The last contains the solution of the model describing the system under study, for any choice of the selected parameters. These surrogate models, also known as meta-models, virtual charts or computational vademecum, in the context of model order reduction, were successfully employed in a variety of industrial applications. However, they remain confronted to a major difficulty when the number of parameters grows exponentially. Thus, processes involving trajectories or sequencing entail a combinatorial exposition (curse of dimensionality) not only due to the number of possible combinations, but due to the number of parameters needed to describe the process. The present paper proposes a promising route for circumventing, or at least alleviating that difficulty. The proposed technique consists of a parametric transfer function that, as soon as it is learned, allows for, from a given state, inferring the new state after the application of a unitary operation, defined as a step in the sequenced process. Thus, any sequencing can be evaluated almost in real time by chaining that unitary transfer function, whose output becomes the input of the next operation. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are an emerging field of research and have proven to have significant potential for use in structural engineering. In previous literature, many studies successfully utilized ANNs to analyze the structures under different loading conditions and verified the accuracy of the approach. Several studies investigated the use of ANNs to analyze the shear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) members. However, few studies have focused on the potential use of an ANN for analysis of the torsional behavior of an RC member. Torsion is a complex problem and modeling the torsional fracture mechanism using the traditional analytical approach is problematic. Recent studies show that the nonlinear behavior of RC members under torsion can be modeled using ANNs. This paper presents a comprehensive analytical and parametric study of the torsional response of RC beams using ANNs. The ANN model was trained and validated against an experimental database of 159 RC beams reported in the literature. The results were compared with the predictions of design codes. The results show that ANNs can effectively model the torsional behavior of RC beams. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have achieved great success in performing machine learning tasks, including classification, regression, prediction, image processing, image recognition, etc., due to their outstanding training, learning, and organizing of data. Conventionally, a gradient-based algorithm known as backpropagation (BP) is frequently used to train the parameters' value of ANN. However, this method has inherent drawbacks of slow convergence speed, sensitivity to initial solutions, and high tendency to be trapped into local optima. This paper proposes a modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) variant with two-level learning phases to train ANN for image classification. A multi-swarm approach and a social learning scheme are designed into the primary learning phase to enhance the population diversity and the solution quality, respectively. Two modified search operators with different search characteristics are incorporated into the secondary learning phase to improve the algorithm's robustness in handling various optimization problems. Finally, the proposed algorithm is formulated as a training algorithm of ANN to optimize its neuron weights, biases, and selection of activation function based on the given classification dataset. The ANN model trained by the proposed algorithm is reported to outperform those trained by existing PSO variants in terms of classification accuracy when solving the majority of selected datasets, suggesting its potential applications in challenging real-world problems, such as intelligent condition monitoring of complex industrial systems. One of the most challenging tasks in project management is estimating the duration of a project. The unknowns that accompany projects, the different risks, the uniqueness of each project, and the differences between organizations' culture and management techniques, hinder the ability to build one project duration prediction tool that can fit all types of projects and organizations. When machine learning (ML) techniques are used for project duration prediction, the challenge is even greater, as each organization has a different dataset structure, different features, and different quality of data. This hinders the ability to create one ML model that fits all types of organizations. This paper presents a new dynamic ML tool for improving the prediction accuracy of project duration. The tool is based on an artificial neural network (ANN) which is automatically adapted and optimized to different types of prediction methods and different datasets. The tool trains the ANN model multiple times with different architectures and uses a genetic algorithm to eventually choose the architecture which gives the most accurate prediction results. The validation process of the prediction accuracy is performed by using real-life project datasets supplied by two different organizations which have different project management approaches, different project types, and different project features. The results show that the proposed tool significantly improved the prediction accuracy for both organizations despite the major differences in the size, type, and structure of their datasets. In this paper, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) have been utilized to predict the stability of a planar tunnel heading in rock mass based on the well-defined Hoek-Brown (HB) yield criterion. The HB model was developed to capture the failure criterion of rock masses. To provide the datasets for an ANN model, the numerical upper bound (UB) and lower bound (LB) solutions obtained from the finite element limit analysis (FELA) with the HB failure criterion for the problem of tunnel headings are derived. The sensitivity analysis of all influencing parameters on the stability of rock tunnel heading is then performed on the developed ANN model. The proposed solutions will enhance the dependability and preciseness of predicting the stability of rock tunnel heading. Note that the effect of the unlined length ratio has not been explored previously but has been found to be of critical importance and significantly contributes to the failure of rock tunnel heading. By utilizing the machine learning-aided prediction capability of the ANN approach, the numerical solutions of the stability of tunnel heading can be accurately predicted, which is better than the use of the classic linear regression approach. The analysis of influential machine parameters can be useful to plan and design a plastic injection molding process. However, current research in parameter analysis is mostly based on computer-aided engineering (CAE) or simulation which have been demonstrated to be inadequate for analyzing complex behavioral changes in the real injection molding process. More advanced approaches using machine learning technology specifically with artificial neural networks (ANNs) brought promising results in terms of prediction accuracy. Nevertheless, the black box and distributed representation of ANN prevent humans from gaining an insight into which process parameters give a significant influence on the final prediction output. Therefore, in this paper, we develop a simpler ANN model by using structural learning with forgetting (SLF) as the algorithm for the training process. Instead of typical backpropagation which generated a fully connected layer of the ANN model, SLF only reveals the important neurons and connections. Hence, the training process of SLF leaves only influential connections and neurons. Since each of the neurons specifically on the input layer represent each of the injection molding parameters, the ANN-SLF model can be further investigated to determine the influential process parameters. Tarbela is the largest earth-filled dam in Pakistan, used for both irrigation and power production. Tarbela has already lost around 41.2% of its water storage capacity through 2019, and WAPDA predicts that it will continue to lose storage capacity. If this issue is ignored for an extended period of time, which is not far away, a huge disaster will occur. Sedimentation is one of the significant elements that impact the Tarbela reservoir's storage capacity. Therefore, it is crucial to accurately predict the sedimentation inside the Tarbela reservoir. In this paper, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) architecture and multivariate regression technique are proposed to validate and predict the amount of sediment deposition inside the Tarbela reservoir. Four input parameters on yearly basis including rainfall (Ra), water inflow (Iw), minimum water reservoir level (Lr), and storage capacity of the reservoir (Cr) are used to evaluate the proposed machine learning models. Multivariate regression analysis is performed to undertake a parametric study for various combinations of influencing parameters. It was concluded that the proposed neural network model estimated the amount of sediment deposited inside the Tarbela reservoir more accurately as compared to the multivariate regression model because the maximum error in the case of the proposed neural network model was observed to be 4.01% whereas in the case of the multivariate regression model was observed to be 60.7%. Then, the validated neural network model was used for the prediction of the amount of sediment deposition inside the Tarbela reservoir for the next 20 years based on the time series univariate forecasting model ETS forecasted values of Ra, Iw, Lr, and Cr. It is generally observed that aquatic organisms have symmetric abilities to produce oxygen (O 2) and fix carbon dioxide (C O 2) . A simulation model with time-dependent parameters was recently proposed to better understand the symmetric effects of accelerated climate change on coastal ecosystems. Changes in environmental elements and marine life are two examples of variables that are expected to change over time symmetrically. The sustainability of each equilibrium point is examined in addition to proving the existence and accuracy of the proposed model. To support the conclusions of this research compared to other studies, numerical simulations of the proposed model and a case study are investigated. This paper proposes an integrated bibliographical analysis of artificial neural networks (ANNs) using the Reverse-Propagation with Levenberg–Marquaradt Scheme (RP-LMS) to evaluate the main properties and applications of ANNs. The results obtained by RP-LMS show how to prevent global warming by improving the management of marine fish resources. The reference dataset for greenhouse gas emissions, environmental temperature, aquatic population, and fisheries population (GAPF) is obtained by varying parameters in the numerical Adam approach for different scenarios. Southwest Asia has different climate types including arid, semiarid, Mediterranean, and temperate regions. Due to the complex interactions among components of the Earth system, forecasting precipitation is a difficult task in such large regions. The aim of this paper is to propose a learning approach, based on artificial neural network (ANN) and random forest (RF) algorithms for post-processing the output of forecasting models, in order to provide a multi-model ensemble forecasting of monthly precipitation in southwest Asia. For this purpose, four forecasting models, including GEM-NEMO, NASA-GEOSS2S, CanCM4i, and COLA-RSMAS-CCSM4, included in the North American multi-model ensemble (NMME) project, are considered for the ensemble algorithms. Since each model has nine different lead times, a total of 108 different ANN and RF models are trained for each month of the year. To train the proposed ANN an RF models, the ERA5 reanalysis dataset is employed. To compare the performance of the proposed algorithms, four performance evaluation criteria are calculated for each model. The results indicate that the performance of the ANN and RF post-processing is better than that of the individual NMME models. Moreover, RF outperformed ANN for all lead times and months of the year. In brain–computer interfaces (BCIs), it is crucial to process brain signals to improve the accuracy of the classification of motor movements. Machine learning (ML) algorithms such as artificial neural networks (ANNs), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), decision tree (D.T.), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), naive Bayes (N.B.), and support vector machine (SVM) have made significant progress in classification issues. This paper aims to present a signal processing analysis of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals among different feature extraction techniques to train selected classification algorithms to classify signals related to motor movements. The motor movements considered are related to the left hand, right hand, both fists, feet, and relaxation, making this a multiclass problem. In this study, nine ML algorithms were trained with a dataset created by the feature extraction of EEG signals.The EEG signals of 30 Physionet subjects were used to create a dataset related to movement. We used electrodes C3, C1, CZ, C2, and C4 according to the standard 10-10 placement. Then, we extracted the epochs of the EEG signals and applied tone, amplitude levels, and statistical techniques to obtain the set of features. LabVIEW™2015 version custom applications were used for reading the EEG signals; for channel selection, noise filtering, band selection, and feature extraction operations; and for creating the dataset. MATLAB 2021a was used for training, testing, and evaluating the performance metrics of the ML algorithms. In this study, the model of Medium-ANN achieved the best performance, with an AUC average of 0.9998, Cohen's Kappa coefficient of 0.9552, a Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.9819, and a loss of 0.0147. These findings suggest the applicability of our approach to different scenarios, such as implementing robotic prostheses, where the use of superficial features is an acceptable option when resources are limited, as in embedded systems or edge computing devices. In the oil and gas industries, predicting and classifying oil and gas production for hydrocarbon wells is difficult. Most oil and gas companies use reservoir simulation software to predict future oil and gas production and devise optimum field development plans. However, this process costs an immense number of resources and is time consuming. Each reservoir prediction experiment needs tens or hundreds of simulation runs, taking several hours or days to finish. In this paper, we attempt to overcome these issues by creating machine learning and deep learning models to expedite the process of forecasting oil and gas production. The dataset was provided by the leading oil producer, Saudi Aramco. Our approach reduced the time costs to a worst-case of a few minutes. Our study covered eight different ML and DL experiments and achieved its most outstanding R2 scores of 0.96 for XGBoost, 0.97 for ANN, and 0.98 for RNN over the other experiments. Stencil printing is the most crucial process in reflow soldering for the mass assembly of electronic circuits. This paper investigates different machine learning-based methods to predict the essential process characteristics of stencil printing: the area, thickness, and volume of deposited solder paste. The training dataset was obtained experimentally by varying the printing speed (from 20 to 120 mm/s), the size (area ratio from 0.35 to 1.7) of stencil apertures, and the particle size (characterized by a log-normal distribution) in the solder paste. Various machine learning-based methods were assessed; ANFIS–adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems; ANN artificial neural networks (with different learning methods); boosted trees, regression trees, SVM–support vector machines. Each method was optimized and fine-tuned with hyperparameter optimization, and the overfitting phenomenon was also prevented with cross-validation. The regression tree was the best performing approach for modelling the stencil printing, while ANN with the Bayesian regularization learning method was only slightly worse. The presented methodology for fine-tuning, parameter optimization, and the comparison of different machine learning-based methods can easily be adapted to any application field in electronics manufacturing. Thermoforming is a process where the laminated sheet is pre-heated to the desired forming temperature before being pressed and cooled between the molds to give the final formed part. Defects such as wrinkles, matrix-smear or ply-splitting could occur if the process is not optimized. Traditionally, for thermoforming of fiber-reinforced composites, engineers would either have to perform numerous physical trial and error experiments or to run a large number of high-fidelity simulations in order to determine satisfactory combinations of process parameters that would yield a defect-free part. Such methods are expensive in terms of equipment and raw material usage, mold fabrication cost and man-hours. In the last decade, there has been an ongoing trend of applying machine learning methods to engineering problems, but none for woven composite thermoforming. In this paper, two applications of artificial neural networks (ANN) are presented. The first is the use of ANN to analyze full-field contour results from simulation so as to predict the process parameters resulting in the quality of the formed product. Results show that the developed ANN can predict some input parameters reasonably well from just inspecting the images of the thermoformed laminate. The second application is to optimize the process parameters that would result in a quality part through the objectives of minimizing the maximum slip-path length and maximizing the regions of the laminate with a predesignated shear angle range. Our results show that the ANN can provide reasonable optimization of the process parameters to yield improved product quality. Overall, the results from the ANNs are encouraging when compared against experimental data. The image analysis method proposed here for machine learning is novel for composite manufacturing as it can potentially be combined with machine vision in the actual manufacturing operation to provide active feedback to ensure quality products. This necessitates a deep understanding of AI and its essential components, such as machine learning (ML), artificial neural networks (ANN), and deep learning (DP). Aim: This review aims to enlighten clinicians regarding AI and its applications in the diagnosis of oral diseases, along with the prospects and challenges involved. Review results: AI has been used in the diagnosis of various oral diseases, such as dental caries, maxillary sinus diseases, periodontal diseases, salivary gland diseases, TMJ disorders, and oral cancer through clinical data and diagnostic images. Larger data sets would enable AI to predict the occurrence of precancerous conditions. They can aid in population-wide surveillance and decide on referrals to specialists. AI can efficiently detect microfeatures beyond the human eye and augment its predictive power in critical diagnosis. Conclusion: Although studies have recognized the benefit of AI, the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning has not been integrated into routine dentistry. The indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) is a key parameter for measuring the power output of an internal combustion engine (ICE). This indicator can be used to locate the high efficiency regions of engines. Therefore, it makes sense to predict the IMEP based on the machine learning (ML) approaches. However, different ML models are applicable to different scenarios, so it is important to choose the right model for prediction. The objective of this paper was to compare three ML models' (ANN, SVR, RF) predictive performance in forecasting IMEP indicator with the input parameters spark timing (ST), speed and load. A validated one-dimensional (1D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was employed to provide 756 sets of data for the training, validation, and testing of the model. The results indicated that the random forest (RF) model had the worst prediction performance, and support vector regression (SVR) had a slightly better prediction performance than the artificial neural network (ANN), at least for the investigations in this study. Overall, the ANN and SVR models showed good predictive performance for IMEP, as the coefficient of determination (R2) was close to unity, and the root mean squared error (RMSE) was close to zero. Wind energy is one of the fastest growing sources of energy worldwide. This is clear from the high volume of wind power applications that have been increased in recent years. However, the uncertain nature of wind speed induces several challenges towards the development of efficient applications that require a deep analysis of wind speed data and an accurate wind energy potential at a site. Therefore, wind speed forecasting plays a crucial rule in reducing this uncertainty and improving application efficiency. In this paper, we experimented with several forecasting models coming from both machine-learning and deep-learning paradigms to predict wind speed in a metrological wind station located in East Jerusalem, Palestine. The wind speed data were obtained, modelled, and forecasted using six machine-learning techniques, namely Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), lasso regression, ridge regression, Support Vector Regression (SVR), random forest, and deep Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Five variables were considered to develop the wind speed prediction models: timestamp, hourly wind speed, pressure, temperature, and direction. The performance of the models was evaluated using four statistical error measures: Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), and coefficient of determination (R2). The experimental results demonstrated that the random forest followed by the LSMT-RNN outperformed the other techniques in terms of wind speed prediction accuracy for the study site. One of the ongoing tasks in space structure testing is the vibration test, in which a given structure is mounted onto a shaker and excited by a certain input load on a given frequency range, in order to reproduce the rigor of launch. These vibration tests need to be conducted in order to ensure that the devised structure meets the expected loads of its future application. However, the structure must not be overtested to avoid any risk of damage. For this, the system's response to the testing loads, i.e., stresses and forces in the structure, must be monitored and predicted live during the test. In order to solve the issues associated with existing methods of live monitoring of the structure's response, this paper investigated the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict the system's responses during the test. Hence, a framework was developed with different use cases to compare various kinds of artificial neural networks and eventually identify the most promising one. Featured Application: This paper presents solutions for smart devices with embedded artificial intelligence dedicated to vehicular applications. Virtual sensors based on neural networks or regressors provide real-time predictions on diesel engine power loss caused by increased exhaust back pressure. The actual trade-off among engine emissions and performance requires detailed investigations into exhaust system configurations. Correlations among engine data acquired by sensors are susceptible to artificial intelligence (AI)-driven performance assessment. The influence of exhaust back pressure (EBP) on engine performance, mainly on effective power, was investigated on a turbocharged diesel engine tested on an instrumented dynamometric test-bench. The EBP was externally applied at steady state operation modes defined by speed and load. A complete dataset was collected to supply the statistical analysis and machine learning phases—the training and testing of all the AI solutions developed in order to predict the effective power. By extending the cloud-/edge-computing model with the cloud AI/edge AI paradigm, comprehensive research was conducted on the algorithms and software frameworks most suited to vehicular smart devices. The sound quality (SQ) and sound perception assessments of electric vehicles (EVs) clearly differ from those of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). Therefore, it is essential to describe and evaluate the SQ of EVs. To evaluate the SQ in EVs, it is necessary to organize evaluators for conducting subjective jury tests, which are time-consuming and labor-intensive. In addition, the evaluation results are subject to the evaluators themselves and other external interferences. With the advancement of machine learning and artificial neural networks (ANNs), this problem can be well solved. This paper outlines a model for SQ estimation in EVs based on a genetic algorithm-optimized back propagation artificial neural network (GA-BP ANN). Moreover, the correlation between the physical-psychoacoustical parameters and the subjective SQ estimations obtained from the jury tests was investigated in this study. It was found that the GA-BP ANN SQ model has many advantages in comparison with the multiple linear regression (MLR) model in terms of precision and generalization. Quantum coherence is a crucial resource in numerous quantum processing tasks. The robustness of coherence provides an operational measure of quantum coherence, which can be calculated for various states using semidefinite programming. However, this method depends on convex optimization and can be time-intensive, especially as the dimensionality of the space increases. In this study, we employ machine learning techniques to quantify quantum coherence, focusing on the robustness of coherence. By leveraging artificial neural networks, we developed and trained models for systems with different dimensionalities. In this work we construct a surrogate model using artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict the steady-state behavior of an unmanned combat aircraft. We employ various strategies to improve the model's accuracy, including the consideration of design tolerances, creating independent surrogate models for the different flow regimes and encoding non-numeric input features. We also explore alternative machine learning models, albeit they demonstrated a lower reliability than ANNs. Two scenarios are considered for the target variable: one focusing solely on predicting the pitching moment coefficient, and the other incorporating the roll moment coefficient as well. We investigate different methods for handling multiple targets, finding that constructing a single model with multiple outputs consistently outperforms developing separate models for each target variable. With the progressive reduction in virgin material availability and the growing global concern for sustainability, civil engineering researchers worldwide are shifting their attention toward exploring alternative and mechanically sound technological solutions. The feasibility of preparing both cold and hot asphalt mixtures (AMs) for road pavement binder layers with construction and demolition wastes (C&DWs) and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) partially replacing virgin materials like limestone aggregates and filler has already been proven. The technical suitability and compliance with technical specifications for road paving materials involved the evaluation of mechanical and volumetric aspects by means of indirect tensile strength tests and saturated surface dry voids, respectively. Thus, the main goal of the present study is to train, validate, and test selected machine learning algorithms based on data obtained from the previous experimental campaign with the aim of predicting the volumetric properties and the mechanical performance of the investigated mixtures. A comparison between the predictions made by ridge and lasso regression techniques and both shallow (SNN) and deep neural network (DNN) models showed that the latter achieved better predictive capabilities, highlighted by fully satisfactory performance metrics. DNN performance can be summarized by R2 values equal to 0.8990 in terms of saturated surface dry void predictions, as well as 0.9954 in terms of indirect tensile strength predictions. Predicted observations can be thus implemented within the traditional mix design software. This would reduce the need to carry out additional expensive and time-consuming experimental campaigns. This paper proposes computational models to investigate the effects of dust and ambient temperature on the performance of a photovoltaic system built at the Hashemite University, Jordan. The system is connected on-grid with an azimuth angle of 0° and a tilt angle of 26°. The models have been developed employing optimized architectures of artificial neural network (ANN) and extreme learning machine (ELM) models to estimate conversion efficiency based on experimental data. The methodology of building the models is demonstrated and validated for its accuracy using different metrics. The effect of each parameter was found to be in agreement with the well-known relationship between each parameter and the predicted efficiency. It is found that the optimized ELM model predicts conversion efficiency with the best accuracy, yielding an R2 of 91.4%. Moreover, a recommendation for cleaning frequency of every two weeks is proposed. Finally, different scenarios of electricity tariffs with their sensitivity analyses are illustrated. The study of penetration depth of gravity piston samplers has an essential impact on sampling efficiency and instrument safety. This study focuses on predicting penetration depth based on the characteristic parameters of the sampled seafloor sediments and the sampler parameters. Although numerous studies of gravity corer penetration depth have been carried out, most have been based on the energy conservation equation, which considers a varying number of influencing factors. Furthermore, most research has focused on the same research idea of finding analytical solutions. The present study proposes a new approach to predicting gravity corer penetration depth based on a machine learning method that uses real sampling data from the sea and experimental data from a gravity sampling physical model for training and testing. Experimental results indicate that the machine learning model can accurately predict gravity corer penetration depth. Moreover, predictions were made for the same penetration conditions using the machine learning model and three other analytical solution models. Results show that the prediction accuracy of machine learning outperforms that of the analytical prediction model under various statistical rubrics. This study demonstrates the capacity of the proposed machine learning model and provides civil engineers with an effective tool to predict the penetration depth of gravity corers. Polymer flooding is a prominent enhanced oil recovery process that is widely recognized for its cost-effectiveness and substantial success in increasing oil production. In this study, the Buckley–Leverett mathematical model for polymer flooding was used to generate more than 163,000 samples that reflect different reservoir conditions using seven input parameters. We introduced artificial noise into the dataset to simulate real-world conditions and mitigate overfitting. Seven classic machine learning models and two neural networks were trained on this dataset to predict the oil recovery factor based on the input parameters. Among these, polynomial regression performed best with a coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) of 0.909, and the dense neural network and cascade-forward neural network achieved R 2 scores of 0.908 and 0.906, respectively. Our analysis included permutation feature importance and metrics analysis, where key features across all models were identified, and the model's performance was evaluated on a range of metrics. Compared with similar studies, this research uses a significantly larger and more realistic synthetic dataset that explores a broader spectrum of machine learning models. Thus, when applied to a real dataset, our methodology can aid in decision-making by identifying key parameters that enhance oil production and predicting the oil recovery factor given specific parameter values. Accurately and instantly estimating the hydrodynamic characteristics in two-phase liquid–gas flow is crucial for industries like oil, gas, and other multiphase flow sectors to reduce costs and emissions, boost efficiency, and enhance operational safety. This type of flow involves constant slippage between gas and liquid phases caused by a deformable interface, resulting in changes in gas volumetric fraction and the creation of structures known as flow patterns. Empirical and numerical methods used for prediction often result in significant inaccuracies during scale-up processes. Different methodologies based on artificial intelligence (AI) are currently being applied to predict hydrodynamic characteristics in two-phase liquid–gas flow, which was corroborated with the bibliometric analysis where AI techniques were found to have been applied in flow pattern recognition, volumetric fraction determination for each fluid, and pressure gradient estimation. The results revealed that a total of 178 keywords in 70 articles, 29 of which reached the threshold (machine learning, flow pattern, two-phase flow, artificial intelligence, and neural networks as the high predominance), were published mainly in Flow Measurement and Instrumentation. This journal has the highest number of published articles related to the studied topic, with nine articles.
