In this work, CeO 2 nanocrystals with a mixture of distinct morphologies were obtained using different solvents (acetone or ethanol). The (micro)structural, sensing mechanism, and magnetic properties, as well as first-principle calculations were evaluated. XPS reveals that the sample synthesized in acetone exhibited a diminished Ce4+ content (and heightened Ce3+ concentration) compared to the sample synthesized in ethanol. In the case of the syntheses at acetone, sphere-like nanoparticles and nanorods present a predominance of surfaces (111) and (220), while the syntheses with ethanol led to a predominance of surfaces (200) for the sphere-like nanoparticles. Theoretical simulations reveal the spin polarization of f electrons in Ce ions neighboring oxygen vacancies suggests that oxygen vacancies situated at the surface may engender a greater number of magnetic moments compared to those induced by an oxygen vacancy within the bulk. At room temperature, the M S of CeO 2 nanocrystals crystallized in acetone (66.20 emu-g) surpasses that of the CeO 2 nanocrystals obtained in ethanol (24.07 emu-g), which can be attributed to the differing morphologies of the samples. Our findings illustrate that, in addition to the solvent type, the size and morphology of the particles also play a significant role in influencing the sensing mechanism and magnetic properties. Films based on CeO 2 nanocrystals synthesized via MAS using acetone and ethanol revealed a fast response time of 9.6 s and 12 s, with a recovery time of 45.6 s and 87.6 s towards CO gas, respectively, these phenomena are attributed to the presence of oxygen vacancies, which facilitate the adsorption of CO. Our findings are key for facet engineering and may provide new strategies for producing CeO 2 based-materials to be applied in morphology-dependent technologies, such as carbon monoxide (CO) gas sensors. A metal complex (R-TAP-Pd(II)) constructed by chiral molecule R-TAP coordinated Pd(II) was used to modify g-C 3 N 4 to promote the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Meanwhile, the R-TAP-Pd(II) acts as an activation site for proton reduction reaction, which enhances the photocatalytic H 2 evolution. [Display omitted] The photocatalytic H 2 production activity of polymer carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4) is limited by the rapid recombination of photoelectron-hole pairs and slow surface reduction dynamic process. Here, a supramolecular complex (named R-TAP-Pd(II)) was fabricated via self-assembly of (R)-N-(1-phenylethyl)-4-(4-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)benzamide (R-TAP) with Pd(II) and used to modify g-C 3 N 4. In the R-TAP-Pd(II)@g-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalyst, the spin polarization of R-TAP-Pd(II) can promote charge transfer and inhibit photogenerated carrier recombination, as confirmed by spectral tests and photoelectrochemical performance tests. Electrochemical tests and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests proved that the Pd(II) ion in the R-TAP-Pd(II) molecule can serve as active sites to accelerate H 2 production. The R-TAP-Pd(II)@g-C 3 N 4 presented a photocatalytic H 2 generation rate of 1085 μmol g−1 h−1 when exposed to visible light, which was a about 278-fold increase compared with g-C 3 N 4. Two-dimensional (2D) half-metallic magnets are expected to achieve breakthroughs in the field of spintronics and quantum computation due to their 100% spin polarization and non-dissipative ballistic transport characteristics. However, the current availability of practical applications for these materials is limited. In this paper, a new 2D material NiVS6As2 is predicted based on density functional theory (DFT). It has a ferromagnetic ground state with a high Curie temperature, TC = 150 K and half-semi-metal (HSM) band structure protected by a structural symmetry degeneracy point on the Fermi surface, which can be controlled by an electric field and strain. When an out-of-plane electric field is applied, NiVS6As2 shows a Chern insulator with a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect. These results expand the family of 2D magnetic semimetals, and provide new theoretical inspiration for understanding the protection of degenerate point symmetry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The experimental efficiency has been a central concern for time-consuming experiments. Spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (spin-resolved ARPES) is renowned for its inefficiency in spin-detection, despite its outstanding capability to directly determine the spin-polarized electronic properties of materials. Here, we investigate the potential enhancement of the efficiency of spin-resolved ARPES experiments through the integration of measurement informatics. We focus on a representative topological insulator Bi 2 Te 3 , which has well-understood spin-polarized electronic states. We employ Gaussian process regression (GPR) to assess the accumulation of spin polarization information using an indicator known as the GPR score. Our analyses based on the GPR model suggest that the GPR score can serve as a stopping criterion for spin-resolved ARPES experiments. This criterion enables us to conduct efficient spin-resolved ARPES experiments, significantly reducing the time costs by 5-10 times, compared to empirical stopping criteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alkaline earth halides garnered interest in spintronics research due to their longer spin relaxation time. Employing first principles calculations, 3d transition metal (TM)-substituted magnesium bromide (MgBr2) monolayers have been reported for the first time for potential spintronics applicability. Among these systems, Cr-, Cu- and Fe-substituted MgBr2 monolayers showed half-metallicity that can be used in ultra-fast spintronics because of high spin polarization. Bipolar magnetic semiconducting (BMS) nature was observed in Mn-substituted monolayer that enables spin control and manipulation by external bias voltage. The formation energy of TM dopants under Br-rich condition showed the feasibility of TM substitution. The half-metallic TM-substituted systems showed a large spin channel gap which inhibits spin leakage. The spin flip gap in BMS monolayer was feasible for practical device operation. Additionally, significant magnetic anisotropy energy per dopant has been observed with a ferromagnetic coupling in Cr-, Cu- and Fe-substituted systems, while antiferromagnetic coupling was shown by Mn- and V-substituted monolayers. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation revealed a near room temperature magnetic phase transition temperature. Robustness of the half-metallicity and BMS spin flip gap was ascertained with strain-mediated density of states which is of importance while fabrication upon a lattice mismatch between substrate. The magnetic transition temperature tuned by applied either compressive or tensile strain is also performed. Spin textures, i.e., the distribution of spin polarization vectors in reciprocal space, exhibit diverse patterns determined by symmetry constraints, resulting in a variety of spintronic phenomena. Here, we propose a universal theory to comprehensively describe the nature of spin textures by incorporating three symmetry flavors of reciprocal wavevector, atomic orbital, and atomic site. Such an approach enables us to establish a complete classification of spin textures constrained by the little co-group and predict some exotic spin texture types, such as Zeeman-type spin splitting in antiferromagnets and quadratic spin texture. To illustrate the influence of atomic orbitals and sites on spin textures, we predict orbital-dependent spin texture and anisotropic spin-momentum-site locking effects, and corresponding material candidates validated through first-principles calculations. The effect of external magnetic fields on the behavior of the Zhang-Rice exciton in NiPS3, which captures the physics of spin-orbital entanglement in 2D XY-type antiferromagnets, remains unclear. This study presents systematic study of angle-resolved and polarization-resolved magneto-optical photoluminescence spectra of NiPS3 in the Voigt geometry. We observed highly anisotropic, non-linear Zeeman splitting and polarization rotation of the Zhang-Rice exciton, which depends on the direction and intensity of the magnetic field and can be attributed to the spin-orbital coupling and field-induced spin reorientation. Furthermore, above the critical magnetic field, we detected additional splitting of the exciton peaks, indicating the coexistence of various orientations of Néel vector. This study characterizes orbital change of Zhang-Rice exciton and field-induced spin-reorientation phase transitions in a 2D hexagonal XY-type antiferromagnet, and it further demonstrates the continuous manipulation of the spin and polarization of the Zhang-Rice exciton. NiPS3 is a van der Waals antiferromagnet with a rich optical response including an exciton of very narrow linewidth, the origin of which is still a topic of active discussion. Efficient detection of the magnetic state is a critical step towards useful antiferromagnet-based spintronic devices. Recently, finite tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) has been demonstrated in tunnel junctions with antiferromagnetic electrodes, however, these studies have been mostly limited to junctions with two identical antiferromagnet (AFM) electrodes, where the matching of the spin-split Fermi surfaces played critical role. It remains unclear if AFMs can provide a finite net spin polarization, and hence be used as a spin polarizer or detector. In this work, we experimentally fabricate single-sided antiferromagnetic tunnel junctions consisting of one AFM electrode (Mn3Sn) and one ferromagnet (FM) electrode (CoFeB), where the spin polarized tunneling transport from AFM is detected by the FM layer. We observe a high TMR at cryogenic temperature (>100% at 10 K) in these asymmetric AFM tunnel junctions, suggesting a large effective spin polarization from Mn3Sn despite its nearly vanishing magnetization. The large TMR is consistent with recent theoretical studies where the broken symmetry in non-collinear AFMs is predicted to lift the spin degeneracy in the band structure. Our work provides strong evidence that spin polarized electrical transport can be achieved from AFMs. Antiferromagnets have both negligible stray fields, and fast dynamics, making them ideal for fast and densely packed spintronic devices. Nanoscale-engineered surfaces induce regulated strain in atomic layers of 2D materials that could be useful for unprecedented photonics applications and for storing and processing quantum information. Nevertheless, these strained structures need to be investigated extensively. Here, we present texture-induced strain distribution in single-layer WS2 (1L-WS2) transferred over Si/SiO2 (285 nm) substrate. The detailed nanoscale landscapes and their optical detection are carried out through Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and optical spectroscopy. Remarkable differences have been observed in the WS2 sheet localized in the confined well and at the periphery of the cylindrical geometry of the capped engineered surface. Raman spectroscopy independently maps the whole landscape of the samples, and temperature-dependent helicity-resolved photoluminescence (PL) experiments (off-resonance excitation) show that suspended areas sustain circular polarization from 150 K up to 300 K, in contrast to supported (on un-patterned area of Si/SiO2) and strained 1L-WS2. Our study highlights the impact of the dielectric environment on the optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials, providing valuable insights into the selection of appropriate substrates for implementing atomically thin materials in advanced optoelectronic devices. The chip-scale hybrid optical pumping spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometer with a single-beam arrangement has prominent applications in biomagnetic measurements because of its outstanding features, including ultrahigh sensitivity, an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio, homogeneous spin polarization and a much simpler optical configuration than other devices. In this work, a miniaturized single-beam hybrid optical pumping SERF atomic magnetometer based on a microfabricated atomic vapor cell is demonstrated. Although the optically thin Cs atoms are spin-polarized, the dense Rb atoms determine the experimental results. The enhanced signal strength and narrowed resonance linewidth are experimentally proven, which shows the superiority of the proposed magnetometer scheme. By using a differential detection scheme, we effectively suppress optical noise with an approximate five-fold improvement. Moreover, the cell temperature markedly affects the performance of the magnetometer. We systematically investigate the effects of temperature on the magnetometer parameters. The theoretical basis for these effects is explained in detail. The developed miniaturized magnetometer has an optimal magnetic sensitivity of 20 fT/Hz1/2. The presented work provides a foundation for the chip-scale integration of ultrahighly sensitive quantum magnetometers that can be used for forward-looking magnetocardiography (MCG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) applications. The free-field switching of the perpendicular magnetization by the out-of-plane polarized spin current induced spin-orbit torque makes it a promising technology for developing high-density memory and logic devices. The materials intrinsically with low symmetry are generally utilized to generate the spin current with out-of-plane spin polarization. However, the generation of the out-of-plane polarized spin current by engineering the symmetry of materials has not yet been reported. Here, we demonstrate that paramagnetic CaRuO3 films are able to generate out-of-plane polarized spin current by engineering the crystal symmetry. The non-uniform oxygen octahedral tilt/rotation along film's normal direction induced by oxygen octahedral coupling near interface breaks the screw-axis and glide-plane symmetries, which gives rise to a significant out-of-plane polarized spin current. This spin current can drive field-free spin-orbit torque switching of perpendicular magnetization with high efficiency. Our results offer a promising strategy based on crystal symmetry design to manipulate spin current and could have potential applications in advanced spintronic devices. Quantum technologic and spintronic applications require reliable material platforms that enable significant and long‐living spin polarization of excitations, the ability to manipulate it optically in external fields, and the possibility to implement quantum correlations between spins, i.e., entanglement. Here it is demonstrated that these conditions are met in bulk crystals of lead halide perovskites. A giant optical orientation of 85% of excitons, approaching the ultimate limit of unity, in FA0.9Cs0.1PbI2.8Br0.2 crystals is reported. The exciton spin orientation is maintained during the exciton lifetime of 55 ps resulting in high circular polarization of the exciton emission. The optical orientation is robust to detuning of the excitation energy up to 0.3 eV above the exciton resonance and remains larger than 20% up to detunings of 0.9 eV. It evidences pure chiral selection rules and suppressed spin relaxation of electrons and holes, even with large kinetic energies. The exciton and electron–hole recombinations are distinguished by means of the spin dynamics detected via coherent spin quantum beats in magnetic field. Further, electron–hole spin correlations are demonstrated through linear polarization beats after circularly polarized excitation. These findings are supported by atomistic calculations. The present study explored the impacts of dysprosium (Dy³⁺) doping on the structure, optical, and magnetic characteristics of CuDy x Fe 2-x O 4 nanospinel ferrites synthesized via a hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction revealed a tetragonal spinel matrix with increasing Dy³⁺ content, accompanied by a secondary Dy 2 O 3 phase at higher dopant levels for x ≥ 0.1. Crystallite size and microstrain increased with doping, while infrared spectroscopy confirmed the spinel structure and distinct vibrational modes. Interestingly, saturation magnetization displayed a non-monotonic trend, first rising due to spin polarization and cation redistribution, then decreasing with higher Dy³⁺ content attributable to the Dy 2 O 3 phase and larger grains. Coercivity exhibited a maximum at x = 0.2, reflecting the interplay between magnetocrystalline anisotropy, canting angles, and domain wall pinning. These findings highlight the complex interplay between Dy³⁺ doping and the resulting properties, paving the way for tailored CuDy x Fe 2-x O 4 nanospinel ferrites functionalities.. Hyperpolarization has become a powerful tool to enhance the sensitivity of magnetic resonance. A universal tool to hyperpolarize small molecules in solution, however, has not yet emerged. Transferring hyperpolarized, labile protons between molecules is a promising approach towards this end. Therefore, hydrogenative parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) was recently proposed as a source to polarize exchanging protons (PHIP-X). Here, we identified four key components that govern PHIP-X: adding the spin order, polarizing the labile proton, proton exchange, and polarization of the target nucleus. We investigated the last two steps experimentally and using simulations. We found optimal exchange rates and field cycling methods to polarize the target molecules. We also investigated the influence of spin relaxation of exchanging protons on the target polarization. It was found experimentally that transferring the polarization from protons directly bound to the target X-nucleus (here 13C) of lactate and methanol using a pulse sequence was more efficient than applying a corresponding sequence to the labile proton. Furthermore, varying the concentrations of the transfer and target molecules yielded a distinct maximum 13C polarization. We believe this work will further help to understand and optimize PHIP-X towards a broadly applicable hyperpolarization method. Hyperpolarization has become a powerful tool to enhance the sensitivity of NMR analyses, whereby hydrogenative parahydrogen-induced polarization with exchanging protons could broaden its applicability. Spin‐transfer torque (STT) and spin‐orbit torque (SOT) form the core of spintronics, allowing for the control of magnetization through electric currents. While the sign of SOT can be manipulated through material and structural engineering, it is conventionally understood that STT lacks a degree of freedom in its sign. However, this study presents the first demonstration of manipulating the STT sign by engineering heavy metals adjacent to magnetic materials in magnetic heterostructures. Spin torques are quantified through magnetic domain‐wall speed measurements, and subsequently, both STT and SOT are systematically extracted from these measurements. The results unequivocally show that the sign of STT can be either positive or negative, depending on the materials adjacent to the magnetic layers. Specifically, Pd/Co/Pd films exhibit positive STT, while Pt/Co/Pt films manifest negative STT. In this work we investigate the spin-dependent transport through a double quantum dot embedded in a ferromagnetic tunnel junction and side attached to a topological superconducting nanowire hosting Majorana zero-energy modes. We focus on the transport regime when the Majorana mode leaks into the double quantum dot competing with the two-stage Kondo effect and the ferromagnetic-contact-induced exchange field. In particular, we determine the system's spectral properties and analyze the temperature dependence of the spin-resolved linear conductance by means of the numerical renormalization group method. Our study reveals unique signatures of the interplay between the spin-resolved tunneling, the Kondo effect and the Majorana modes, which are visible in the transport characteristics. In particular, we uncover a competing character of the coupling to topological superconductor and that to ferromagnetic leads, which can be observed already for very low spin polarization of the electrodes. This is signaled by an almost complete quenching of the conductance in one of the spin channels which is revealed through perfect conductance spin polarization. Moreover, we show that the conductance spin polarization can change sign depending on the magnitude of spin imbalance in the leads and strength of interaction with topological wire. Thus, our work demonstrates that even minuscule spin polarization of tunneling processes can have large impact on the transport properties of the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The unambiguous detection of the Majorana zero mode (MZM), which is essential for future topological quantum computing, has been a challenge in recent condensed matter experiments. The MZM is expected to emerge at the vortex core of topological superconductors as a zero-energy vortex bound state (ZVBS), amenable to detection using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). However, the typical energy resolution of STM/STS has made it challenging to distinguish the MZM from the low-lying trivial vortex bound states. Here, we review the recent high-energy-resolution STM/STS experiments on the vortex cores of Fe(Se,Te), where the MZM is expected to emerge, and the energy of the lowest trivial bound states is reasonably high. Tunneling spectra taken at the vortex cores exhibit a ZVBS well below any possible trivial state, suggesting its MZM origin. However, it should be noted that ZVBS is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the MZM; a qualitative feature unique to the MZM needs to be explored. We discuss the current status and issues in the pursuit of such Majorananess, namely the level sequence of the vortex bound states and the conductance plateau of the ZVBS. We also argue for future experiments to confirm the Majorananess, such as the detection of the doubling of the shot-noise intensity and spin polarization of the MZM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the realm of multiferroicity in 2D magnets, whether magnetic and polar skyrmions can coexist within a single topological entity has emerged as an important question. Here, we study Janus 2D magnets CrInX3 (X=Se, Te) for a comprehensive investigation of the magnetic ground state, magnetic excited state, and corresponding ferroelectric polarization by first-principles electronic structure calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. Specifically, we have thoroughly elucidated the magnetic exchange mechanisms, and have fully exemplified the magnetic field dependence of the magnon spectrum. More importantly, our study reveals a previously unrecognized, remarkably large spin-spiral-induced ferroelectric polarization (up to 194.9 μC/m2) in both compounds. We propose an approach to identify polar skyrmions within magnetic skyrmions, based on the observed direct correlation between spin texture and polarization density. Elucidating this correlation not only deepens our understanding of magnetic skyrmions but also paves the way for innovative research in the realm of multiferroic skyrmions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Generating fully spin‐polarized currents (FSPC) and pure spin currents (PSC) are of great importance for spintronics. Half‐metallic ferromagnets, which generate 100% spin polarization, are considered as one of the most promising materials for applications in spintronics. However, the knowledge of intrinsic half‐metallic materials in the spin‐dependent photogalvanic effect is still poorly understood. Using first‐principle transport calculations, a robust approach is introduced to obtain FSPC and PSC by spin‐dependent photogalvanic effect in intrinsic half‐metallic materials. Based on the recently synthesized monolayer half‐metallic C(CN)3, a 2D spin photogalvanic device is built and it is demonstrated that the FSPC can be achieved in a wider photon energy range under both linearly and elliptically polarized light due to the half‐metallicity. It is intriguing to note that the device can be easily manipulated to transition between two modes: one for generating FSPC and another for generating PSC by setting the two leads in anti‐parallel configurations. Furthermore, a significant spin‐valve effect can be attained across various photon energies for both linearly and elliptically polarized light. The research shows that half‐metallic materials are an ideal platform for studying and generating FSPC and PSC, which presents a remarkable avenue for the development of advanced spintronic devices in the next generation. Highlights The energy conversion mechanism is thoroughly analyzed, with a detailed quantitative characterization of the dissipation capacities of polarization, conduction, and magnetic loss. Inspired by DNA transcription, atom and geometry configurations co-modulating multi-scale helical converters achieve the RL min of −63.13 dB at 1.29 mm, and the maximum RCS reduction value reach 36.4 dB m2. Orbital coupling, spin and cross polarization synergize to realize a 6.08 GHz EAB, further expanding to ultrabroad electromagnetic wave absorption of 12.16 GHz through metamaterial design.

Spin defects in semiconductors are attracting interest as a material basis for quantum information and computing technologies. In this work, the spin properties of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV−) centers in a 6H-SiC silicon carbide crystal enriched with the 28 Si isotope were studied by high-frequency (94 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) methods. Due to an optical excitation channel at the NV− centers, it was possible to initialize the electron spin of the defect using a laser source, which led to a significant increase in the intensity of the recorded EPR signal. The dependences of the observed spin polarization were analyzed at different optical excitation wavelengths (λ = 640 – 1064 nm), output power (0 – 500 mW), and temperature (50 – 300 K) of the crystal. The results obtained reveal the optimal experimental conditions for maximizing the efficiency of optical quantum energy transfer to the spin system. This opens up new possibilities for using NV− centers in 6H-SiC to create multi-qubit spin-photon interfaces operating in the infrared region.

Based on first-principles calculations in the density functional theory, we systematically investigated the possible interface structure, magnetism, and electronic properties of the all-Heusler alloy Co2MnGe/CoTiMnGe(100) heterojunction. The calculation indicated that the Co2MnGe Heusler alloy is a half-metal with a magnetic moment of 4.97 μ^ CoTiMnGe is a narrow-band gap semiconductor and may act as an ultra-sensitive photocatalyst. We cannot find an "ideal" spin-polarization of 100% in CoCo termination and MnGe termination. Due to the interface interaction, the direct magnetic hybridization or indirect RKKY exchange will be weakened, leading to an increase in the atomic magnetic moment of the interfacial layer. For eight possible heterojunction structures, the half-metallic gaps in the Co2MnGe bulk have been destroyed by the inevitable interface states. The spin-polarization value of 94.31% in the CoCo-TiGe-B heterojunction revealed that it is the most stable structure. Optically induced intersite spin transfer (OISTR) promises manipulation of spin systems within the ultimate time limit of laser excitation. Following its prediction, signatures of ultrafast spin transfer between oppositely aligned spin sublattices have been observed in magnetic alloys and multilayers. However, it is known neither from theory nor from experiment whether the band structure immediately follows the ultrafast change in spin polarization or whether the exchange split bands remain rigid. We show that ultrafast spin transfer occurs even in ferromagnetic gadolinium metal. Charge transfer between localized surface and extended valence-band states leads to a decrease of the surface spin polarization. This synchronously alters the exchange splitting of the bulk valence bands during laser excitation. Moreover, the onset of demagnetization can be tuned by over 200 fs by changing the temperature-dependent spin mixing. The key factors in achieving high energy efficiency for proton exchange membrane fuel cells are reducing overpotential and increasing the oxygen reduction rate. Based on first-principles calculations, we induce H atom adsorption on 4 × 4 × 1 monolayer MoSe2 to induce spin polarization, thereby improving the catalytic performance. In the calculation of supercells, the band unfolding method is used to address the band folding effect in doped systems. Furthermore, it is evident from analyzing the unique energy band configuration of MoSe2 that a higher valley splitting value has better catalytic effects on the oxygen reduction reaction. We believe that the symmetries of the distinct adsorption site result in different overpotentials. In addition, when an even number of hydrogen atoms is adsorbed, the monolayer MoSe2 has no spin polarization. Context: The coherent electron/spin transport in azurin, a species of copper protein, was calculated based on the Landauer model. The research is motivated by the fast electron transport and spin selectivity/polarization in azurin, which have been reported in relation to the chiral-induced spin selectivity of the peptide structure. The calculated spin polarization of copper proteins was large. This phenomenon was strongly influenced by the spin density of the atoms in the ligand group, whereas the contribution of copper was negligible. The results suggest that spin polarization in copper proteins is enhanced by that of the ligand groups. The predicted spin polarization aligns primarily with the scanning tunneling microscope-based break-junction technique to study the electronic properties of single-molecule junctions. Methods: Computational techniques employed in this study are nonequilibrium Green's functions (NEGF) and density functional theory (DFT) based on the Landauer model, implemented using the QuantumATK software (Synopsys Inc.). The Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) exchange-correlation functional was adopted for spin-polarized generalized gradient approximation (SGGA). Nowadays there is considerable interest in the photogalvanic effect in low-dimensional devices. In this work, we built a two-dimensional Bi2C-based photodetector and explored the spin-dependent photogalvanic effect under linearly polarized light and zero-bias conditions which can produce experimentally observable photoelectron flow. It was discovered that by introducing vacancies and substitution-doping into the Bi2C photodetector, the photogalvanic effect could be enhanced by 10–100 times that of a pristine photodetector, which is sufficient to be detected in experiments. Moreover, due to strong spin–orbit interactions, the Bi2C photodetector can produce very high spin polarization, even 100% full spin polarization, and pure spin current at a specific incident angle and photon energy, for example in the Bi1-vacancy Bi2C photodetector. In addition, the photon energy of incident light can regulate the produced spin photocurrent, which shows considerable anisotropy. [Display omitted] The efficiency of CO 2 photocatalytic reduction is severely limited by inefficient separation and sluggish transfer. In this study, spin polarization was induced and built-in electric field was strengthened via Co doping in the BiVO 4 cell to boost photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Results showed that owing to the generation of spin-polarized electrons upon Co doping, carrier separation and photocurrent production of the Co-doped BiVO 4 were enhanced. CO production during CO 2 photocatalytic reduction from the Co-BiVO 4 was 61.6 times of the BiVO 4. Notably, application of an external magnetic field (100 mT) further boosted photocatalytic CO 2 reduction from the Co-BiVO 4 , with 68.25 folds improvement of CO production compared to pristine BiVO 4. The existence of a built-in electric field (IEF) was demonstrated through density functional theory (DFT) simulations and kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). Mechanism insights could be elucidated as follows: doping of magnetic Co into the BiVO 4 resulted in increased the number of spin-polarized photo-excited carriers, and application of a magnetic field led to an augmentation of intrinsic electric field due to a dipole shift, thereby extending carrier lifetime and suppressing charges recombination. Additionally, HCOO− was a crucial intermediate in the process of CO 2 RR, and possible pathways for CO 2 reduction were proposed. The oxygen evolution reaction, which involves high overpotential and slow charge-transport kinetics, plays a critical role in determining the efficiency of solar-driven water splitting. The chiral-induced spin selectivity phenomenon has been utilized to reduce by-product production and hinder charge recombination. To fully exploit the spin polarization effect, we herein propose a dual spin-controlled perovskite photoelectrode. The three-dimensional (3D) perovskite serves as a light absorber while the two-dimensional (2D) chiral perovskite functions as a spin polarizer to align the spin states of charge carriers. Compared to other investigated chiral organic cations, R-/S-naphthyl ethylamine enable strong spin-orbital coupling due to strengthened π–π stacking interactions. The resulting naphthyl ethylamine-based chiral 2D/3D perovskite photoelectrodes achieved a high spin polarizability of 75%. Moreover, spin relaxation was prevented by employing a chiral spin-selective L-NiFeOOH catalyst, which enables the secondary spin alignment to promote the generation of triplet oxygen. This dual spin-controlled 2D/3D perovskite photoanode achieves a 13.17% of applied-bias photon-to-current efficiency. Here, after connecting the perovskite photocathode with L-NiFeOOH/S-naphthyl ethylamine 2D/3D photoanode in series, the resulting co-planar water-splitting device exhibited a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 12.55%. Enhancing the efficiency of solar-driven water splitting is challenging but highly interesting. Layered group IV–VI compounds (i.e., SnSe, SnS, GeSe, and GeS) in the puckered structure resembling black‐phosphorene (BlackP) have attracted increasing interest because of their intriguing ferroic orders and outstanding thermoelectric properties. By invoking the guiding principles of isovalency and isomorphism for promoting van der Waals epitaxy, and based on comprehensive first‐principles calculations, here it is shown that the typically metastable BlackP‐like GeTe can be readily stabilized on the (001) surface of isostructural SnSe. Importantly, the ferroelectricity of such a BlackP‐like GeTe monolayer can be substantially enhanced compared to the freestanding state, due to the substrate enlarged in‐plane polar displacements. The GeTe/SnSe heterobilayer exhibits multiple ferroelectric/ferrielectric polarization states, which can be exploited for high‐density memory devices. These mutually switchable polarization states are also shown to be internally locked with the spin polarization of the valence/conduction bands with pronounced Rashba spin‐orbit splitting and Berry curvature dipole. The flat bands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) provide an especially rich arena to investigate interaction-driven ground states. While progress has been made in identifying the correlated insulators and their excitations at commensurate moiré filling factors, the spin-valley polarizations of the topological states that emerge at high magnetic field remain unknown. Here we introduce a technique based on twist-decoupled van der Waals layers that enables measurement of their electronic band structure and–by studying the backscattering between counter-propagating edge states–the determination of the relative spin polarization of their edge modes. We find that the symmetry-broken quantum Hall states that extend from the charge neutrality point in MATBG are spin unpolarized at even integer filling factors. The measurements also indicate that the correlated Chern insulator emerging from half filling of the flat valence band is spin unpolarized and suggest that its conduction band counterpart may be spin polarized. The hierarchy of symmetry breaking in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene remains a topic of intense fundamental study. The emergence of magnetic transition metal dichalcogenides has significantly advanced the development of valleytronics due to the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry and space-inversion symmetry. However, the lack of regulation methods has prevented researchers from exploring their potential applications. Herein, we propose to use strain engineering to control the spin-valley coupling in the sliding ferroelectric bilayer 2H-VX2 (X = S, Se, Te). Four multiferroic states are constructed by combining the sliding ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetism in the R-stacking bilayer VX2, where the spin and valley polarizations are coupled together from the layer-dependent spin-polarized band structures. By applying a small external strain or pressure on the out-of-plane van der Waals direction, we predicted that there is an antiferromagnetic to magnetic transition in the bilayer VX2, leading to the interesting spin-polarized and chiral circularly polarized radiation at K+ and K- valleys, similar to those found in the magnetic monolayer. To comprehend the coupling between various degrees of freedom in these multiferroic systems, we have developed an effective k·p model. This model unveils a linear relationship between the electric polarization generated by interlayer sliding and the energy difference of the valence band maximum at K+ and K- valleys. Thus, providing an alternate method to measure the electric polarization in the sliding ferroelectrics. Based on the strong coupling between the strain, spin-valley, and electric polarization, it is likely to use the strain to control the interesting emerging properties of 2H-VX2 such as the anomalous valley Hall effect. Herein, we investigate the effect of tilt mismatch on the quantum oscillations of spin transport properties in two-dimensional asymmetrically tilted Dirac cone systems. This study involves the examination of conductance oscillation in two distinct junction types: transverse- and longitudinal-tilted Dirac cones (TTDCs and LTDCs). Our findings reveal an unusual quantum oscillation of spin-polarized conductance within the TTDC system, characterized by two distinct anomaly patterns within a single period, labeled as the linear conductance phase and the oscillatory conductance phase. Interestingly, these phases emerge in association with tilt-induced orbital pseudo-magnetization and exchange interaction. Our study also demonstrates that the structure of the LTDC can modify the frequency of spin conductance oscillation, and the asymmetric effect within this structure results in a quantum beating pattern in oscillatory spin conductance. We note that an enhancement in the asymmetric longitudinal tilt velocity ratio within the structure correspondingly amplifies the beating frequency. Exploring the spin transport characteristics of magnetic tunnel junctions based on half-metallic Heusler holds significance, not only in unraveling the fundamental physics at play but also in advancing applications of spintronic devices. Here, density functional theory in conjunction with non-equilibrium Green's functions has been systematically employed to investigate two prominent Heusler alloys, Co2CrAl and CoFeCrAl, which are of direct interest to the candidates of magnetic tunnel junction. The electronic structures of two Hesler alloys reveal that both exhibit characteristics of half-metallic ferromagnets, featuring a substantial spin-down bandgap and achieving 100% spin polarization. The tunneling magnetoresistance ratios obtained for Co2CrAl/AlP/Co2CrAl and CoFeCrAl/AlP/CoFeCrAl magnetic tunnel junctions are determined to be 173% and 59%, respectively, with the former exhibiting superior device characteristics. Therefore, the Co2CrAl/AlP-based magnetic tunnel junction demonstrates ideal performance, providing new opportunities for two-dimensional spintronics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interference of two and four light beams with linear or circular polarization is studied analytically and numerically based on the Richards–Wolf formalism. We consider such characteristics of the interference fields as the distribution of intensity, polarization, and spin angular momentum density. The generation of light fields with 1D and 2D periodic structure of both intensity and polarization is demonstrated. We can control the periodic structure both by changing the polarization state of the interfering beams and by changing the numerical aperture of focusing. We consider examples with a basic configuration, as well as those with a certain symmetry in the polarization state of the interfering beams. In some cases, increasing the numerical aperture of the focusing system significantly affects the generated distributions of both intensity and polarization. Experimental results, obtained using a polarization video camera, are in good agreement with the simulation results. The considered light fields can be used in laser processing of thin films of photosensitive (as well as polarization-sensitive) materials in order to create arrays of various ordered nano- and microstructures. Abstract Spin‐transfer torque (STT) and spin‐orbit torque (SOT) form the core of spintronics, allowing for the control of magnetization through electric currents. While the sign of SOT can be manipulated through material and structural engineering, it is conventionally understood that STT lacks a degree of freedom in its sign. However, this study presents the first demonstration of manipulating the STT sign by engineering heavy metals adjacent to magnetic materials in magnetic heterostructures. Spin torques are quantified through magnetic domain‐wall speed measurements, and subsequently, both STT and SOT are systematically extracted from these measurements. The results unequivocally show that the sign of STT can be either positive or negative, depending on the materials adjacent to the magnetic layers. Specifically, Pd/Co/Pd films exhibit positive STT, while Pt/Co/Pt films manifest negative STT. First‐principle calculations further confirm that the sign reversal of STT originates from the sign reversal of spin polarization of conduction electrons.

The global spin alignment of the vector meson has been observed in relativistic heavy ion collisions, but its theoretical origin is still on hot debates. Here we propose to apply the light front framework to explain this phenomenon since the light front form explicitly describes the hadron spin including both the quark spin and the orbital angular momentum. After applying the light front spinor, we find that the spin alignment in the polarization of vector mesons with ρ00>1/3 can be naturally manifested and in particular, the obtained spin alignment for ϕ meson is in good agreement with the experimental data. This implies that to explain the spin alignment it is important to properly include the contribution from the gluon interactions that are presented in terms of the orbital angular momentum of the hadron bound state.

Metabolism is a fundamental process that underlies human health and diseases. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques offer a powerful approach to identify metabolic processes and track the flux of metabolites at the molecular level in living systems. An in vitro study through in-cell NMR tracks metabolites in real time and investigates protein structures and dynamics in a state close to their most natural environment. This technique characterizes metabolites and proteins involved in metabolic pathways in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. In vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) enables whole-organism metabolic monitoring by visualizing the spatial distribution of metabolites and targeted proteins. One limitation of these NMR techniques is the sensitivity, for which a possible improved approach is through isotopic enrichment or hyperpolarization methods, including dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) and parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP). DNP involves the transfer of high polarization from electronic spins of radicals to surrounding nuclear spins for signal enhancements, allowing the detection of low-abundance metabolites and real-time monitoring of metabolic activities. PHIP enables the transfer of nuclear spin polarization from parahydrogen to other nuclei for signal enhancements, particularly in proton NMR, and has been applied in studies of enzymatic reactions and cell signaling. This review provides an overview of in-cell NMR, in vivo MRS, and hyperpolarization techniques, highlighting their applications in metabolic studies and discussing challenges and future perspectives. Randomly mixing ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) elements in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) can create fluctuating local magnetic moments that influence the energetics of point defects. In this study, we employed first-principles calculations to investigate the influence of magnetic properties on vacancy migration energy in Fe49.5Mn29.4Co10.1Cr10.1C0.9, alongside equiatomic NiCoFeCrMn alloy. By examining structures with paramagnetism, ferromagnetism, and no spin polarization, our study reveals significant impacts of magnetic interactions on vacancy migration barriers, potentially altering the sequence of elemental migration energies if overlooked. In Fe49.5Mn29.4Co10.1Cr10.1C0.9, the order of vacancy migration barriers is Co > Fe > Mn > Cr across all magnetic states, suggesting the dominant roles of atomic properties and inherent chemical bonding. Conversely, the NiCoFeCrMn HEA exhibits a pronounced magnetic state-dependent elemental migration energy order, indicating that magnetic interactions significantly influence vacancy migration behavior in this alloy. In addition, while FM elements generally exhibit higher migration barriers, AFM elements display lower barriers in the investigated Cantor alloys, with notable variations between the studied compositions. These findings underscore the critical role of magnetism in accurate migration energy calculations, which is important for studying chemically biased diffusion and radiation-induced segregation in HEAs. Colloidal semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) have emerged as low‐cost and free‐standing alternates of traditional quantum wells. The giant heavy‐ and light‐hole splitting in NPLs allows for efficient optical spin injection. However, the electron spin lifetimes for prototypical CdSe NPLs are within a few picoseconds, likely limited by strong electron‐hole exchange in these quantum‐ and dielectric‐confined materials. Here how this hurdle can be overcome with engineered NPL‐heterostructures is demonstrated. By constructing type‐I CdSe/ZnS core/shell NPLs, dielectric screening inside the core is strongly enhanced, prolonging the electron spin polarization time (τesp) to over 30 ps (or 60 ps electron spin‐flip time). Alternatively, by growing type‐II CdSe/CdTe core/crown NPLs to spatially separate electron and hole wavefunctions, the electron‐hole exchange is strongly suppressed, resulting in τesp as long as 300 ps at room temperature. This study not only exemplifies how the well‐established synthetic chemistry of colloidal heterostructures can aid in spin dynamics control but also establishes the feasibility of room‐temperature coherent spin manipulation in colloidal NPLs. Emergent phenomena such as two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) and interfacial superconductivity and ferromagnetism are generally built on the interface between insulating oxide thin films and substrates, e.g., LaAlO3/SrTiO3, where the 2D profiles of these electronic states are precisely confined at the interface of two insulators. Herein we report a high-mobility electron gas state with unusual symmetry at the interface of the Sr2CrMoO6/SrTiO3 (110) heterostructures, the fermiology of which follows the cubic crystallographic symmetry rather than the two-dimensional interface itself, resulting in the identical Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations with applied magnetic field along all the twelve equivalent [110] crystallographic directions of SrTiO3, distinctly different from the 2D nature of the electron gas reported previously. Neutron diffraction verifies the predicted ferrimagnetic ordering between Cr and Mo moments. This, together with the magnetic hysteresis loops and negative magnetoresistance in low-field region, suggests possible spin polarization of itinerant electrons. Therefore, a quasi-3D profile, high mobility (up to 104 cm2 V−1 s−1) and possibly spin polarized electronic state is observed in the double-perovskite-based oxide heterostructures. This finding of the electronic properties in Sr2CrMoO6/SrTiO3 (110) heterostructure expands the knowledge of interfacial physics, as well as shines light on oxide-based electronics and spintronics research. The existence of electron gas at the interfaces of oxide-based heterostructures with broken spatial inversion symmetry gives rise to various interesting physical phenomena. Polarization and spin correlations have been studied in detail for top quarks at the LHC, but have been explored very little for the other flavors of quarks. In this paper we consider the processes pp → with q = b, c or s. Utilizing the partial preservation of the quark's spin information in baryons in the jet produced by the quark, we examine possible analysis strategies for ATLAS and CMS to measure the quark polarization and spin correlations. We find polarization measurements for the b and c quarks to be feasible, even with the currently available datasets. Spin correlation measurements for are possible using the CMS Run 2 parked data, while such measurements for will become possible with higher integrated luminosity. For the s quark, we find the measurements to be challenging with the standard triggers. We also provide leading-order QCD predictions for the polarization and spin correlations expected in the and samples with the cuts envisioned for the above analyses. Apart from establishing experimentally the existence of spin correlations in and systems produced in pp collisions, the proposed measurements can provide new information on the polarization transfer from quarks to baryons and might even be sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. The present study focuses on the spin-dependent vibrational properties of HKUST-1, a metal–organic framework with potential applications in gas storage and separation. Employing density functional theory (DFT), we explore the consequences of spin couplings in the copper paddle wheels (as the secondary building units of HKUST-1) on the material's vibrational properties. By systematically screening the impact of the spin state on the phonon bands and densities of states in the various frequency regions, we identify asymmetric -COO- stretching vibrations as being most affected by different types of magnetic couplings. Notably, we also show that the DFT-derived insights can be quantitatively reproduced employing suitably parametrized, state-of-the-art machine-learned classical potentials with root-mean-square deviations from the DFT results between 3 cm−1 and 7 cm−1. This demonstrates the potential of machine-learned classical force fields for predicting the spin-dependent properties of complex materials, even when explicitly considering spins only for the generation of the reference data used in the force-field parametrization process. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the discovery of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) oxide heterointerfaces. Since their discovery, transition metal oxide (TMO) interfaces have emerged as a fascinating and fast‐growing area of research, offering a variety of unique and exotic physical properties which has provided a strong impetus for the rapid advances and actualization of oxide electronics. This review revisits the fundamental mechanisms accounting for the two‐dimensional (2D) conducting interfaces, and how new models proposed to better account for the unique interfacial effects. Recent breakthroughs in the theoretical and experimental domains of oxide interfaces are also discussed including the detection and investigation of 2D quasiparticle. Moving beyond the well‐known LAO/STO interface, this review delves into other systems where unconventional interfacial superconductivity, interfacial magnetism, and spin polarization are dealt with in greater detail. In terms of device applications, this review proceeds with a treatment on the recent developments in domains including field effect transistors and freestanding heterostructure membranes. By emphasizing the opportunities and challenges of integrating oxide interfaces with existing technologies, the review will end off with an outlook projecting the progress and the trajectory of this research domain in the years to come. Low-energy (~ 100eV) electrons have been employed for more than half a century to investigate physical, chemical and electronic phenomena in condensed matter and surface physics. A particular role may be attributed to a purely quantum-mechanical property of the electron-its spin or intrinsic angular momentum. Since the 1970s the electron spin has been indispensable in determining the role of spin-dependent interactions, such as exchange interaction and spin-orbit coupling and their consequences. Most recently, the aspect of topology and its role in condensed matter systems has given a new drive to the investigation of the electron spin and spin textures in such materials. New results on time-dependent ultrafast phenomena may become available by the availability of new intense lasers and laser-driven sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When spin‐orbit coupling (SOC) is absent, all proposed half‐metals with twofold degenerate nodal points at the K (or K′) point in 2D materials are classified as "Dirac half‐metals" owing to the way graphene is utilized in the earliest studies. Actually, each band crossing point at the K or K′ point is described by a 2D Weyl Hamiltonian with definite chirality; hence, it should be a Weyl point. To the best of its knowledge, there have not yet been any reports of a genuine (i.e., fourfold degenerate) 2D Dirac point half‐metal. In this work, using first‐principles calculations, it proposes forthefirsttime that the 2D d0‐type ferromagnet Mg4N4 is a genuine 2D Dirac half‐metal candidate with a fourfold degenerate Dirac point at the S high‐symmetry point, intrinsic magnetism, a high Curie temperature, 100% spin polarization, topology robust under the SOC and uniaxial and biaxial strains, and spin‐polarized edge states. This work can serve as a starting point for future predictions of intrinsically magnetic materials with genuine 2D Dirac points, which will aid the frontier of topo‐spintronics research in 2D systems. The spin Hall effect (SHE) allows efficient generation of spin polarization or spin current through charge current and plays a crucial role in the development of spintronics. While SHE typically occurs in non-magnetic materials and is time-reversal even, exploring time-reversal-odd (T-odd) SHE, which couples SHE to magnetization in ferromagnetic materials, offers a new charge-spin conversion mechanism with new functionalities. Here, we report the observation of giant T-odd SHE in Fe3GeTe2/MoTe2 van der Waals heterostructure, representing a previously unidentified interfacial magnetic spin Hall effect (interfacial-MSHE). Through rigorous symmetry analysis and theoretical calculations, we attribute the interfacial-MSHE to a symmetry-breaking induced spin current dipole at the vdW interface. Furthermore, we show that this linear effect can be used for implementing multiply-accumulate operations and binary convolutional neural networks with cascaded multi-terminal devices. Our findings uncover an interfacial T-odd charge-spin conversion mechanism with promising potential for energy-efficient in-memory computing. Charge-to-spin conversion allows for the generation and control of spin polarization via a charge current. Typically, this is done with non-magnetic materials with large spin-orbit interactions such as Platinum. Herein, Dai et al demonstrate an intriguing charge-to-spin mechanism, a magnetic spin Hall effect, in a van der Waals heterostructure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
