1. Movables for Immovable Stories: Re-animating Children’s Classics with Hypermediated Paper Engineering

Abstract

The familiar format of the pop-up book provides a dynamic artistic springboard for creatives working with digital media in the twenty-first century. This article explores how and why the format of the pop-up book, and other historic paper-engineered artefacts, have been utilised to re-imagine British children’s literature “classics” in contemporary transmedia adaptations. To demonstrate this phenomenon, I compare the formal aesthetics and experiential potential of two recent works. In Mary Poppins Returns (2018), a cinematic Disney adaptation of P. L. Travers’s early-twentieth-century Mary Poppins book series, a CGI-animated pop-up book serves as a theatrical stage for a bawdy music-hall performance. In Curious Alice (2021), a psychedelic virtual reality (VR) rendering of Lewis Carroll’s nineteenth-century Alice books at the Victoria and Albert Museum exhibition Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser, players were whisked into a peepshow Wonderland crafted from pixelated paper. Both texts remediate paper-engineered devices to literally re-animate key chapters of these classics, but also to metaphorically re-animate, and continue, the legacies of celebrated authors from past centuries for the next generation of young readers. In this way, remediated movable books can reinstate the seemingly immovable status of classics such as Alice and Mary Poppins, elevating their “timeless” appeal to the “universal” desires of children to become immersed in fantastical storyworlds. This renewal is partly achieved by the amplification of the movable book’s “temporal paradox”, as an artefact that is both perpetually novel and forward-looking, yet rooted in analogue nostalgia for the past. The icon of the pop-up book, in particular, creates a conceptual bridge between the figure of the imaginative, intuitive, Romantic, nineteenth- and twentieth-century child, and the media-saturated, transliterate young consumer of today, recalibrating classics for modern tastes and challenging current understandings of the child.

Abstract

This study presents an empirical investigation of basic processes in the perception of speech sounds. The experimental methods applied have their roots in two different psycholinguistic research paradigms; i.e., "categorical perception" and "dichotic listening." In the categorical perception paradigm, listeners' categorization of speech sounds is compared with their ability to discriminate speech-like stimuli forming a physical continuum (such as the range between a T-sound and a D-sound). In the dichotic listening paradigm, differences in listeners' identification of speech stimuli presented to either left or right ear are interpreted as the result of hemispheric lateralization. Extensive results include the following: (1) the acoustic consonant-continuum revealed a high degree of categorical effect; (2) when the same acoustic continuum was presented in the dichotic listening experiment, subjects showed a markedly better ability to identify stimuli presented to the right ear than stimuli presented to the left ear; (3) on the other hand, the acoustic vowel-continuum revealed no categorical effect at all; and (4) similarly, no general dichotic effect was found when the same vowel-continuum was presented in the dichotic listening experiment. Findings suggest that there exists a clear connection between the categorical and the dichotic effect. (Contains 211 references and 51 figures of data. 8. From 'essay' to 'personal text': The role of genre in Norwegian EFL exam papers 1996-2011

Abstract

Introduction This article investigates developments in the use of genre in Norwegian EFL exam papers for first year upper secondary school during the time period from 1996 to 2011, describing genres rendered in texts for reception (attached text material) and texts for production (task options in the main exam assignment) in the two curriculum periods Reform 94 and the Knowledge Promotion of 2006. Genre-related patterns are identified and compared, and the aspect of multimodality in texts for reception and production in EFL exams is discussed. Material and method Sixteen exam papers from 1996 to 2011 constitute the corpus material of the study. Genres rendered in attached text material are categorized, as well as specified and inferred genre instructions in the chief assignment for text production. The study employs a mixed method combining quantitative and qualitative analyses. Findings The results show significant changes in genres rendered in texts for reception. A few computer-generated genres are observed in the last curriculum period; but no increase in multimodal texts from R94 to LK06 is observed. The range of genres for production remains largely unchanged through the period of investigation, although the distribution among the genres changes. Moreover, genre instructions in text assignments are, to a certain extent, unclear or mixed in both curriculum periods, although more so in R94 than in LK06. Discussion and conclusion Based on these findings the article suggests further investigation and debate concerning genre awareness connected to EFL exams, among education authorities as well as among teachers and students of English.

Abstract

Two articles highlight different issues on foreign language learning and instruction in Denmark. The first article describes a research project at Roskilde University Center that focuses on group organized and self managed foreign language acquisition. The idea for the project came about as a result of concern over problems related to foreign language instruction, such as student motivation, cuts in funding, and especially the idea that foreign language instruction is too "teacher directed." Five students, between ages 20 and 40 and of various backgrounds, participated in the project. Emphasis was on student management of language learning (e.g., students led classroom discussion while teacher acted as participant). Students read certain materials, recorded their discussion of the materials, and analyzed the recorded discussion for "correctness." Research notes and the texts used for discussion are appended. The second article looks at the status and function of foreign languages in secondary schools. The thesis for the article is the "foreign language crisis," which refers to issues such as a reduction in funding for foreign language education, and the technical and pedagogic difficulties faced by foreign languages in secondary schools. The article discusses where language instruction fits into educational planning, what the central problems are with foreign language instruction, and what resolutions there are to the foreign language crisis in secondary schools. Abstract

BACKGROUND - It is almost 50 years since the “new” drug problem appeared in Norway. How have central authorities conceived of the drug problem during these 50 years? On what have relevant policymaking and action been based? How has the government’s conceptions of the drug problem been expressed over the years? DATA - White papers, action plans, bills etc. RESULTS - A review of the main policy documents shows how Norway adopted strict penal measures from the outset, while recognizing at the same time the need to apply an interdisciplinary approach to drug abuse and initiate various support measures for drug users alongside the penal measures. In recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on seeing drug abuse as a health-related problem rather than one of control. Substance abuse is today perceived more in terms of dependency or as a disease, and harm reduction is increasingly seen as a pivotal aspect of policy. People with drug problems were known until recently as substance abusers, though the preferred term today is “drug dependents”. CONCLUSIONS - As such, one could say, Norway seems to have developed a “schizophrenic” view of the drug problem. On the one hand, the health aspects of drug abuse are increasingly central to thinking, while on the other penalties for drug offenses remain high. This health/penalty loop in turn seems to prevent the government from softening its stance on penalties - even if such a move were considered appropriate.

Abstract

This article provides an overview of teaching and learning processes in research on physics and chemistry education published in NorDiNa 2005–2013. Using the didactic triangle as our theoretical framework we developed a typology to analyse the data and used this to categorise 89 related research papers, from all levels of education (primary, secondary and tertiary). The results suggest that students’ characteristics, their understanding of the content and learning outcomes are studied frequently. In contrast, science teachers are studied much less. Most papers reported studies that had been done at the teaching organisation level. Course level studies and society level studies were also frequent. However, international level studies were few in this data pool. We conclude by discussing less popular research topics in the science education field.

This article discusses how coaching and mentoring can be integrated and work together as systematic tools for leadership development. The author draws on psychotherapy as a parallel for practitioner research and posits five validation hypotheses for coaching and mentoring. Arguably coaching is not sufficient to develop leaders, but a useful toolbox within mentoring. Internal mentors in particular have cultural and industry knowledge of direct relevance to the adept. Seven domains are identified for an integrated framework: Insight from reflection and meta-learning; Working with the whole person; Competence modelling; Deep listening, beyond words; Emotional intelligence; Coaching for results; and Systemic thinking and team development.

14. From total domination of the media agenda to forgotten revelations - A reach and content analysis of the three cross border stories Panama Papers, Security for Sale and Billions for Borders in selected Danish news media

Abstract

This master thesis examines investigative journalistic stories developed in transborder cooperative networks and their reach and content in the Danish news media. With point of departure in the realistic model for the transnationalization of public spheres, it is examined how three examples of these kinds of cross border journalistic stories spread in the Danish national news media after they are published and and whether their transnational characteristics follow, when the stories are disseminated. This is done through an analysis in two parts consisting of a quantitative counting of the reach of the three stories in all the Danish national news media and a quantitative content analysis of 407 web articles and pieces of television news. It is concluded that the two case stories Billions for Borders and Security for Sale do not set the broad media agenda after they are published. While Billions for Borders (the least likely case) almost does not spread in the Danish news media at all, the average case, Security for Sale, has a broader reach in the Danish news media, but only very briefly and neither of the two stories reach the television news or are highly prioritised in the web media when spread. It is further concluded that the Panama Papers story (the most likely case) clearly dominates the broad media agenda after it is published; it is present at practically all media platforms and is highly prioritised and further developed with new angles and sources when passed on by the different news media. Lastly it is concluded that for the story that do spread in independently developed stories in the Danish news media, Panama Papers, the transnational content of the original stories follow and new transnational perspectives are added so that the story is not at all covered only from a domestic angle. It is argued that some of the reasons for the differences in the reach of the three case stories are competition dynamics (positioning) between the Danish news organisations and more general power structures in society which make some subjects legitimate and other illegitimate in the public. Lastly the thesis argues that future cross border stories could come to dominate the media agenda to a greater extent if the media organisations are willing to sacrifice their internal competition and share research, data and source suggestions with each other when publishing a big cross border story. And further, that the media might be able to counter the different power dynamics by insisting on continuously covering also the subjects that today fall within the illegitimate sphere and thereby over time making them more legitimate in the public sphere.

Abstract

In the following, we analyse policy documents from the urban, suburban and rural localities of Aarhus, Horsens and Lemvig with a focus on analysing how territorial cohesion is articulated in the different localities. This means that there is a focus on analysing the relation between territo-rial capital, collective efficacy and territorial governance. Overall, the policy discourses are shaped by the path dependency of the Danish welfare state favouring a focus on equality and therefore a balance not only between development in urban and rural areas but also a balance be-tween growth and liveability in local areas. At the same time, Danish territorial cohesion dis-courses is like other European countries placing increased emphasis on growth and strategic de-velopment of soft and fuzzy spaces of government that facilitate such growth. However, the anal-ysis shows that history and identity together with local material conditions shape the strategic selectivities of such new forms of cross-sectoral partnerships and alliances, and that the involve-ment of community in different ways in the three localities are positioned as a strategic partner in territorial development.

"Skærm / Skærm Ikke" analyserer danske skolers mobilregler, inklusive deres effekter og årsager. Læs hvilke modeller der findes, og hvilke effekter skolerne oplever.Rapporten fra DPU billede af de mobilpolitikker, som skolerne hver især har formgivet dem landet over, og samler historier om processer og effekter, som 602 skoler selv har observeret dem.OPSUMMERING AF RAPPORTENS FUNDDer kan identificeres ni praktiske ”mobilmodeller”. Uanset om de har en politik, eller lader lærere og klasser forvalte deres egne regler, tager danske skoler stilling til, at tele- fonerne nu er allestedsnærværende. To tredjedel oplever en effekt. Ofte har der været konkrete problemer og episoder, der fik ledelsen, lærerne, personalet, skolebestyrelsen eller endda elever til at ønske klarere retningslinjer. Hyppige konkrete problematikker, der har ført til beslutningen om at lave en politik eller et regelsæt, er forstyrrelse i timerne, reduceret samspil uden skærmen i frikvartererne, mobning, elever der ringer hjem samt uønskede billeder/film af elever eller lærere. Det allermest almindelige er dog, at mobilerne opleves som en forstyrrelse i timerne. - Der ses ni overordnede slags regler. Det mest almindelige er, at elevers telefoner opbevares eller skal være slukkede i tasken. Så kan det variere om de må tages frem i frikvarteret og/eller om skolen undertiden bruger dem i undervisningen.- De fleste skoler indfører skærmregler eller opbevaring for at mindske distraktioner i timerne, men den største gevinst observeres for det sociale samvær.- To tredjedel af skolerne observerer en positiv effekt af deres skærmregler. En tredjedel gør ikke.- Opbevaring er den mest effektive måde at mindske distraktioner i timen. Opbevaring og aldersdifferentiering er de mest effektive måder at styrke elevernes sociale samvær. Der ses dog fleste forskellige positive effekter når elever indimellem kan bruge deres telefoner i skolen, og ved aldersdifferentiering.- Skoler har held med at lære eleverne digital adfærd og deltagelseskompetence, hvis de ser det som deres opgave. De mest restriktive regler skaber dog praktiske barrierer for at personalet kan lære eleverne skik og brug omkring mobiltelefoner.- Der er ikke socioøkonomiske forskelle på hvilke problemer skolerne søger at løse, eller på deres valg af regler. Abstract

“From daddy’s obedient Henric”: Pedagogical perspectives on educational travel of the early 1800s. This article analyses educational travel in the early 1800s from the perspective of its educational heritage and praxis. The aim is to develop an understanding of the pedagogical significance of educational travel. The article makes clear how upbringing and education are represented in the framework of travel narratives in pre-industrial landscapes. The argument is based on the influence of the mercantile class on educational travel and the informal effect of these trips on changes in pedagogical thinking. The travel letters of Johan Henrik Munktell from 1828 to 1830 are used as primary sources. Using Paul Ricoeur’s memory-critical hermeneutics, travel narratives become significant sources for how education is arranged, and immanent pedagogy is a key term. The results demonstrate that the individualisation process works together with forms of crypto-learning, the core of the personal development vision, and society’s long-term memory.
