The inverter is considered the core of the PV power plant. The inverter's failure leads to generation loss and decreases plant availability. So, it is required to investigate a clear Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to deduce the failure causes and implement the required corrective action in addition to the preventive action to avoid more inverter failure, hereby maintaining the plant available to a certain value. This paper discusses real-time mode operation data analysis of the PV grid-connected inverter due to real central inverter incidents in Benban solar park located in Egypt.The central inverter plays an important role in the Mega-Scale PV power plant. The main function of this inverter is to convert the DC power produced by the PV modules to AC power to be injected into the utility grid by considering specific characteristics based on the grid code. The availability of any PV power plant directly depends on the healthy inverter's operation. The more increases for the installed inverters, the less availability loss in the case of inverter partial or catastrophic failures. So, it is required to focus on the failure causes of the central inverter by implementing a technical analysis using the available operational data. The monitored data of the central inverter in the PV power plant is classified into two types. The first type is the continuous time data stored in the memory. It represents the waveforms of inverter outputs like voltage, current, frequency, .... etc. Unfortunately, in case of a catastrophic failure, the central inverter is completely charred, and the continuous time data is lost due to storage memory damage. The second type is the operation data that is recorded by the SCADA system (per one-minute interval). Hereby, the operation data is the sole data in the case of the completely charred inverter. The representation of the operational data in curves indicates symptoms that can be used for the RCA processes. The investigation outcomes include three results. The first result is detecting the signature of the IGBT thermal stress on the voltage balance of the DC link capacitor. The second result is verifying a scenario for the cause of the IGBT failure by implementing a technical mathematical model based on the detected symptoms that denote the fault signature which is considered the thread-tip for detecting the failure cause. The third result is the simulating scenario for the interpretation of a DC link capacitors explosion due to the short circuit fault that occurred due to IGBT failure. The investigation in this paper is performed based on operation data analysis of the PV grid-connected inverter (central type) due to a real incident. The analysis methodology is based on mathematical calculation for the IGBT junction temperature using the measured heatsink temperature. The study concludes that after the IGBT failure occurred, it was a short circuit for a while and closed the terminals of the DC link capacitors. So, the DC link capacitors exploded and produced heavy sparks that led to enough fire to burn the inverter container completely. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spectroscopic techniques generate one-dimensional spectra with distinct peaks and specific widths in the frequency domain. These features act as unique identities for material characteristics. Deep neural networks (DNNs) has recently been considered a powerful tool for automatically categorizing experimental spectra data by supervised classification to evaluate material characteristics. However, most existing work assumes balanced spectral data among various classes in the training data, contrary to actual experiments, where the spectral data is usually imbalanced. The imbalanced training data deteriorates the supervised classification performance, hindering understanding of the phase behavior, specifically, sol-gel transition (gelation) of soft materials and glycomaterials. To address this issue, this paper applies a novel data augmentation method based on a generative adversarial network (GAN) proposed by the authors in their prior work. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the actual imbalanced spectral data from Pluronic F-127 hydrogel and Alpha-Cyclodextrin hydrogel are used to classify the phases of data. Specifically, our approach improves 8.8%, 6.4%, and 6.2% of the performance of the existing data augmentation methods regarding the classifier's F-score, Precision, and Recall on average, respectively. Specifically, our method consists of three DNNs: the generator, discriminator, and classifier. The method generates samples that are not only authentic but emphasize the differentiation between material characteristics to provide balanced training data, improving the classification results. Based on these validated results, we expect the method's broader applications in addressing imbalanced measurement data across diverse domains in materials science and chemical engineering. Tabular data analysis is a critical task in various domains, enabling us to uncover valuable insights from structured datasets. While traditional machine learning methods can be used for feature engineering and dimensionality reduction, they often struggle to capture the intricate relationships and dependencies within real-world datasets. In this paper, we present Multi-representation DeepInsight (MRep-DeepInsight), a novel extension of the DeepInsight method designed to enhance the analysis of tabular data. By generating multiple representations of samples using diverse feature extraction techniques, our approach is able to capture a broader range of features and reveal deeper insights. We demonstrate the effectiveness of MRep-DeepInsight on single-cell datasets, Alzheimer's data, and artificial data, showcasing an improved accuracy over the original DeepInsight approach and machine learning methods like random forest, XGBoost, LightGBM, FT-Transformer and L2-regularized logistic regression. Our results highlight the value of incorporating multiple representations for robust and accurate tabular data analysis. By leveraging the power of diverse representations, MRep-DeepInsight offers a promising new avenue for advancing decision-making and scientific discovery across a wide range of fields. The paper presents a novel statistical approach for analyzing the daily coronavirus case and fatality statistics. The survival discretization method was used to generate a two-parameter discrete distribution. The resulting distribution is referred to as the "Discrete Marshall–Olkin Length Biased Exponential (DMOLBE) distribution". Because of the varied forms of its probability mass and failure rate functions, the DMOLBE distribution is adaptable. We calculated the mean and variance, skewness, kurtosis, dispersion index, hazard and survival functions, and second failure rate function for the suggested distribution. The DI index demonstrates that the proposed model can represent both over-dispersed and under-dispersed data sets. We estimated the parameters of the DMOLBE distribution. The behavior of ML estimates is checked via a comprehensive simulation study. The behavior of Bayesian estimates is checked by generating 10,000 iterations of Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques, plotting the trace, and checking the proposed distribution. From simulation studies, it was observed that the bias and mean square error decreased with an increase in sample size. To show the importance and flexibility of DMOLBE distribution using two data sets about deaths due to coronavirus in China and Pakistan are analyzed. The DMOLBE distribution provides a better fit than some important discrete models namely the discrete Burr-XII, discrete Bilal, discrete Burr-Hatke, discrete Rayleigh distribution, and Poisson distributions. In this paper, we explore the mutual effect of prior background expectations and visibility afforded by the 3D configuration of the physical environment on wayfinding efficiency and strategy in multilevel buildings. We perform new analyses on data from 149 participants who performed six unaided and directed wayfinding tasks in virtual buildings with varying degrees of visibility. Our findings reveal that the interaction between visibility and prior background expectations significantly affects wayfinding efficiency and strategy during between-floor wayfinding tasks. We termed this interaction effect strategic visibility, which emphasizes the importance of the strategic allocation of visibility towards actionable building elements in promoting efficient wayfinding and shaping wayfinding strategy. Our study highlights the significance of strategic visibility in promoting inclusive and accessible built environments for neurodiversity. Finally, we provide an open-source dataset that can be used to develop and test new wayfinding theories and models to advance research in the emerging field of human-building interaction. Mass spectrometry technology can realize dynamic detection of many complex matrix samples in a simple, rapid, compassionate, precise, and high-throughput manner and has become an indispensable tool in accurate diagnosis. The mass spectrometry data analysis is mainly to analyze all metabolites in the organism quantitatively and to find the relative relationship between metabolites and physiological and pathological changes. A feature construction of mass spectrometry data (MSFS) method is proposed to construct the features of the original mass spectrometry data, so as to reduce the noise in the mass spectrometry data, reduce the redundancy of the original data and improve the information content of the data. Chi-square test is used to select the optimal non-redundant feature subset from high-dimensional features. And the optimal feature subset is visually analyzed and corresponds to the original mass spectrum interval. Training in 10 kinds of supervised learning models, and evaluating the classification effect of the models through various evaluation indexes. Taking two public mass spectrometry datasets as examples, the feasibility of the method proposed in this paper is verified. In the coronary heart disease dataset, during the identification process of mixed batch samples, the classification accuracy on the test set reached 1.000; During the recognition process, the classification accuracy on the test set advanced to 0.979. On the colorectal liver metastases data set, the classification accuracy on the test set reached 1.000. This paper attempts to use a new raw mass spectrometry data preprocessing method to realize the alignment operation of the raw mass spectrometry data, which significantly improves the classification accuracy and provides another new idea for mass spectrometry data analysis. For most bioinformatics statistical methods, particularly for gene expression data classification, prognosis, and prediction, a complete dataset is required. The gene sample value can be missing due to hardware failure, software failure, or manual mistakes. The missing data in gene expression research dramatically affects the analysis of the collected data. Consequently, this has become a critical problem that requires an efficient imputation algorithm to resolve the issue. This paper proposed a technique considering the local similarity structure that predicts the missing data using clustering and top K nearest neighbor approaches for imputing the missing value. A similarity-based spectral clustering approach is used that is combined with the K-means. The spectral clustering parameters, cluster size, and weighting factors are optimized, and after that, missing values are predicted. For imputing each cluster's missing value, the top K nearest neighbor approach utilizes the concept of weighted distance. The evaluation is carried out on numerous datasets from a variety of biological areas, with experimentally inserted missing values varying from 5 to 25%. Experimental results prove that the proposed imputation technique makes accurate predictions as compared to other imputation procedures. In this paper, for performing the imputation experiments, microarray gene expression datasets consisting of information of different cancers and tumors are considered. Rapid and accurate judgment of the rock mass condition is the key to guaranteeing the safety and efficiency of tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunneling. This paper proposes a method for evaluating rock mass parameters based on K-means clustering, grouping tunneling areas according to the values of TBM tunneling parameters. A dataset including rock mass and TBM tunneling data is treated by logistic normalization and principal component analysis (PCA), and large volumes of tunneling data with different features are transformed into appropriate volumes of dimensionless data. K-means clustering is used, samples are grouped according to the values of tunneling data, and the specific ranges as defined by clustering are regarded as the unified evaluated results of each group. Based on the C1 part of the Pearl Delta water resources allocation project, 100 training samples and 30 testing samples were field-collected, and the proposed method was realized by the training samples and verified by the testing samples. The evaluation accuracies of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), and joint frequency (Jf) were 90%, and 86.7% respectively, demonstrating that the evaluation had acceptable values, and the proposed method was greatly helpful for judging rock conditions. The analysis of data over space and time is a core part of descriptive epidemiology, but the complexity of spatiotemporal data makes this challenging. There is a need for methods that simplify the exploration of such data for tasks such as surveillance and hypothesis generation. In this paper, we use combined clustering and dimensionality reduction methods (hereafter referred to as 'cluster embedding' methods) to spatially visualize patterns in epidemiological time-series data. We compare several cluster embedding techniques to see which performs best along a variety of internal cluster validation metrics. We find that methods based on k-means clustering generally perform better than self-organizing maps on real world epidemiological data, with some minor exceptions. We also introduce EpiVECS, a tool which allows the user to perform cluster embedding and explore the results using interactive visualization. Pump sizing is the process of dimensional matching of an impeller and stator to provide a satisfactory performance test result and good service life during the operation of progressive cavity pumps. In this process, historical data analysis and dimensional monitoring are done manually, consuming a large number of man-hours and requiring a deep knowledge of progressive cavity pump behavior. This paper proposes the use of graph neural networks in the construction of a prototype to recommend interference during the pump sizing process in a progressive cavity pump. For this, data from different applications is used in addition to individual control spreadsheets to build the database used in the prototype. From the pre-processed data, complex network techniques and the betweenness centrality metric are used to calculate the degree of importance of each order confirmation, as well as to calculate the dimensionality of the rotors. Using the proposed method a mean squared error of 0.28 is obtained for the cases where there are recommendations for order confirmations. Based on the results achieved, it is noticeable that there is a similarity of the dimensions defined by the project engineers during the pump sizing process, and this outcome can be used to validate the new design definitions. Nowadays, several companies prefer storing their data on multiple data centers with replication for many reasons. The data that spans various data centers ensures the fastest possible response time for customers and workforces who are geographically separated. It also provides protecting the information from the loss in case a single data center experiences a disaster. However, the amount of data is increasing at a rapid pace, which leads to challenges in storage, analysis, and various processing tasks. In this paper, we propose and design a geographically distributed data management framework to manage the massive data stored and distributed among geo-distributed data centers. The goal of the proposed framework is to enable efficient use of the distributed data blocks for various data analysis tasks. The architecture of the proposed framework is composed of a grid of geo-distributed data centers connected to a data controller (DCtrl). The DCtrl is responsible for organizing and managing the block replicas across the geo-distributed data centers. We use the BDMS system as the installed system on the distributed data centers. BDMS stores the big data file as a set of random sample data blocks, each being a random sample of the whole data file. Then, DCtrl distributes these data blocks into multiple data centers with replication. In analyzing a big data file distributed based on the proposed framework, we randomly select a sample of data blocks replicated from other data centers on any data center. A presumption in previous work has been that sub-optimality in competitive performance following loss is the result of a reduction in decision-making time (i.e., post-error speeding). The main goal of this paper is to test the relationship between decision-making speed and quality, with the hypothesis that slowing down decision-making should increase the likelihood of successful performance in cases where a model of opponent domination can be implemented. Across Experiments 1–3, the speed and quality of competitive decision-making was examined in a zero-sum game as a function of the nature of the opponent (unexploitable, exploiting, exploitable). Performance was also examined against the nature of a credit (or token) system used as a within-experimental manipulation (no credit, fixed credit, variable credit). To compliment reaction time variation as a function of outcome, both the fixed credit and variable credit conditions were designed to slow down decision-making, relative to a no credit condition where the game could be played in quick succession and without interruption. The data confirmed that (a) self-imposed reductions in processing time following losses (post-error speeding) were causal factors in determining poorer-quality behaviour, (b) the expression of lose-shift was less flexible than the expression of win-stay, and, (c) the use of a variable credit system may enhance the perceived control participants have against exploitable opponents. The existing test cannot be applied when the count data is indeterminate, in the interval, and uncertain. The daily and the monthly number of records broken data in the U.S from the weather department is selected for the application of the proposed test. The COVID-19 global pandemic has significantly impacted every aspect of life all over the world. The United States is reported to have suffered more than 20% of the global casualties from this pandemic. It is imperative to investigate the growth dynamics of the disease in the US based on varying geographical and governmental factors that best manifest itself in each State of the Country. This paper utilizes a hybrid machine learning and continuum deformation-based approach for analyzing the stability and growth rate of the pandemic. To this end, principal stress values of the pandemic continuum body are obtained using Mohr's Circle method and overlapping, moving windows of data are analysed successively. This helps in finding the correlations between the growth rate and Governments' action/Public's reaction. Government actions include "state of emergency", "shelter at place", and "phase declarations". We also consider the vaccination rate milestones, which shows us the coordinated Governments' action/Public's reaction. Anomaly detection is a highly important task in the field of data analysis. Traditional anomaly detection approaches often strongly depend on data size, structure and features, while introducing the idea of ensemble into anomaly detection can greatly improve the generalization ability. Ensemble-based anomaly detection methods still face some challenges, however, such as data imbalance, time and space demand and the selection of base detectors. To this end, we propose a selective ensemble method for anomaly detection based on parallel learning (SEAD-PL). First, a differentiated stratified sampling method is designed to alleviate the problem of data imbalance. Then, a distributed parallel training frame is built to address the problem of excessive time and space consumption for base detector training. Finally, a clustering-based ensemble selection strategy is introduced to balance the accuracy and diversity of base detectors. Applications such as disaster management enormously benefit from rapid availability of satellite observations. Traditionally, data analysis is performed on the ground after being transferred—downlinked—to a ground station. Constraints on the downlink capabilities, both in terms of data volume and timing, therefore heavily affect the response delay of any downstream application. In this paper, we introduce RaVÆn, a lightweight, unsupervised approach for change detection in satellite data based on Variational Auto-Encoders (VAEs), with the specific purpose of on-board deployment. RaVÆn pre-processes the sampled data directly on the satellite and flags changed areas to prioritise for downlink, shortening the response time. We verified the efficacy of our system on a dataset—which we release alongside this publication—composed of time series containing a catastrophic event, demonstrating that RaVÆn outperforms pixel-wise baselines. Time series classification is a basic task in the field of streaming data event analysis and data mining. The existing time series classification methods have the problems of low classification accuracy and low efficiency. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a T-CNN time series classification method based on a Gram matrix. Specifically, we perform wavelet threshold denoising on time series to filter normal curve noise, and propose a lossless transformation method based on the Gram matrix, which converts the time series to the time domain image and retains all the information of events. Then, we propose an improved CNN time series classification method, which introduces the Toeplitz convolution kernel matrix into convolution layer calculation. Finally, we introduce a Triplet network to calculate the similarity between similar events and different classes of events, and optimize the squared loss function of CNN. The proposed T-CNN model can accelerate the convergence rate of gradient descent and improve classification accuracy. This paper proposes a KC Score to measure feature importance in clustering analysis of high-dimensional data. The KC Score evaluates the contribution of features based on the correlation between the original features and the reconstructed features in the low dimensional latent space. A KC Score-based feature selection strategy is further developed for clustering analysis. We investigate the performance of the proposed strategy by conducting a study of four single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) datasets. The results show that our strategy effectively selects important features for clustering. In particular, in three datasets, our proposed strategy selected less than 5% of the features and achieved the same or better clustering performance than when using all of the features. Multi- and hyperspectral endoscopy are possibilities to improve the endoscopic detection of neoplastic lesions in the colon and rectum during colonoscopy. However, most studies in this context are performed on histological samples/biopsies or ex vivo. This leads to the question if previous results can be transferred to an in vivo setting. Therefore, the current study evaluated the usefulness of multispectral endoscopy in identifying neoplastic lesions in the colon. The data set consists of 25 mice with colonic neoplastic lesions and the data analysis is performed by machine learning. Another question addressed was whether adding additional spatial features based on Gauss–Laguerre polynomials leads to an improved detection rate. As a result, detection of neoplastic lesions was achieved with an MCC of 0.47. Therefore, the classification accuracy of multispectral colonoscopy is comparable with hyperspectral colonoscopy in the same spectral range when additional spatial features are used. Moreover, this paper strongly supports the current path towards the application of multi/hyperspectral endoscopy in clinical settings and shows that the challenges from transferring results from ex vivo to in vivo endoscopy can be solved. Vaccines save millions of lives every year. They are recommended by experts, trusted by the majority of people, and promoted by expensive health campaigns. Even so, people with neutral attitudes are more persuaded by people holding anti-vaccine than pro-vaccine attitudes. Our analysis of vaccine-related attitudes in more than 140 countries makes sense of this paradox by including approaches from social influence. Specifically, we show that neutral people are positioned closer to anti- than to pro-vaccine people in the opinion space, and therefore more persuadable by them. We use dynamic social simulations seeded with vaccine survey data, to show how this effect results in a drift towards anti-vaccine opinions. Linking this analysis to data from two other multi-country datasets, we found that countries in which the pro-vaccine people are less associated to the neutrals (and so less able to influence them) exhibit lower vaccination rates and stronger increase in distrust. The 2018–2020 Ebola virus disease epidemic in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) resulted in 3481 cases (probable and confirmed) and 2299 deaths. In this paper, we use a novel statistical method to analyze the individual-level incidence and hospitalization data on DRC Ebola victims. Our analysis suggests that an increase in the rate of quarantine and isolation that has shortened the infectiousness period by approximately one day during the epidemic's third and final wave was likely responsible for the eventual containment of the outbreak. The analysis further reveals that the total effective population size or the average number of individuals at risk for the disease exposure in three epidemic waves over the period of 24 months was around 16,000–a much smaller number than previously estimated and likely an evidence of at least partial protection of the population at risk through ring vaccination and contact tracing as well as adherence to strict quarantine and isolation policies. The noninvasive diagnosis and monitoring of high prevalence diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers and chronic respiratory diseases are currently priority objectives in the area of health. In this regard, the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has been identified as a potential noninvasive tool for the diagnosis and surveillance of several diseases. Despite the advantages of this strategy, it is not yet a routine clinical tool. The lack of reproducible protocols for each step of the biomarker discovery phase is an obstacle of the current state. Specifically, this issue is present at the data preprocessing step. Thus, an open source workflow for preprocessing the data obtained by the analysis of exhaled breath samples using gas chromatography coupled with single quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is presented in this paper. This workflow is based on the connection of two approaches to transform raw data into a useful matrix for statistical analysis. Moreover, this workflow includes matching compounds from breath samples with a spectral library. Three free packages (xcms, cliqueMS and eRah) written in the language R are used for this purpose. Furthermore, this paper presents a suitable protocol for exhaled breath sample collection from infants under 2 years of age for GC/MS.

Tinnitus is an auditory phantom perception in the absence of an external sound stimulation. People with tinnitus often report severe constraints in their daily life. Interestingly, indications exist on gender differences between women and men both in the symptom profile as well as in the response to specific tinnitus treatments. In this paper, data of the TrackYourTinnitus platform (TYT) were analyzed to investigate whether the gender of users can be predicted. In general, the TYT mobile Health crowdsensing platform was developed to demystify the daily and momentary variations of tinnitus symptoms over time. The goal of the presented investigation is a better understanding of gender-related differences in the symptom profiles of users from TYT. Based on two questionnaires of TYT, four machine learning based classifiers were trained and analyzed. With respect to the provided daily answers, the gender of TYT users can be predicted with an accuracy of 81.7%. In this context, worries, difficulties in concentration, and irritability towards the family are the three most important characteristics for predicting the gender. Note that in contrast to existing studies on TYT, daily answers to the worst symptom question were firstly investigated in more detail. It was found that results of this question significantly contribute to the prediction of the gender of TYT users. Overall, our findings indicate gender-related differences in tinnitus and tinnitus-related symptoms. Computation of the instantaneous phase and amplitude via the Hilbert Transform is a powerful tool of data analysis. This approach finds many applications in various science and engineering branches but is not proper for causal estimation because it requires knowledge of the signal's past and future. However, several problems require real-time estimation of phase and amplitude; an illustrative example is phase-locked or amplitude-dependent stimulation in neuroscience. In this paper, we discuss and compare three causal algorithms that do not rely on the Hilbert Transform but exploit well-known physical phenomena, the synchronization and the resonance. After testing the algorithms on a synthetic data set, we illustrate their performance computing phase and amplitude for the accelerometer tremor measurements and a Parkinsonian patient's beta-band brain activity. The importance of virus disease outbreaks and its prevention is of growing public concern but our understanding of virus transmission routes is limited by adequate sampling strategies. While conventional swabbing methods provide merely a microbial snapshot, an ideal sampling strategy would allow reliable collection of viral genomic data over longer time periods. This study has evaluated a new, paper-based sticker approach for collection of reliable viral genomic data over longer time periods up to 14 days and after implementation of different hygiene measures. In contrast to swabbing methods, which sample viral load present on a surface at a given time, the paper-based stickers are attached to the surface area of interest and collect viruses that would have otherwise been transferred onto that surface. The major advantage of one-side adhesive stickers is that they are permanently attachable to a variety of surfaces. Initial results demonstrate that stickers permit stable recovery characteristics, even at low virus titers. Stickers also allow reliable virus detection after implementation of routine hygiene measures and over longer periods up to 14 days. Overall, results for this new sticker approach for virus genomic data collection are encouraging, but further studies are required to confirm anticipated benefits over a range of virus types. Simulated moving bed (SMB) is a kind of continuous process which can increase the efficiency of adsorbents in the adsorbent bed. It contains several sectors of flow rate, the switching time of valves and many other possible influencing variables, moreover, these parameters are highly sensitive, so it is very difficult to achieve precise prediction and control. Model predictive control and PID controller are often used in industrial system. Model predictive control needs a lot of accurate industry experience data, and PID controller depends on the selection of control parameters. Therefore, SMB needs an intelligent controller to bypass those complex mechanisms and parameter adjustment processes. This paper we propose the hierarchical fuzzy controller fuzzy controller which is applied to the SMB system to observe the final concentration. Over the past 50 years, temperatures on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) have risen roughly twice as fast as the global average, making it the most unpredictable region of environmental change due to global warming. In this paper, an Environmental Area Index model was developed using data from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project to assess the ecological risk faced by QTP ecosystems under the influence of climate factors. The results show that ecological risk gradually decreases from northwest to the southeast, and there are different trends in ecological risk for each class in areas with different elevation gradients. As elevation increased, the proportion of potential risk areas gradually decreased, and the proportion of high- and higher-risk areas gradually increased. We predict that in the period 2021–2100, the overall ecological risk change trend on the QTP will not be obvious, but there will be a more obvious change on the vertical gradient. In general, under the existing global climate change scenario, the ecological risk faced by the QTP show a decreasing trend under the influence of climate factors, and the decrease in ecological risks is much higher at higher elevations than at lower elevations. Log normal-like concentration distributions are ubiquitously observed in the environment. However, the mechanistic origins are not well understood. In this paper, we show that first order exponential kinetics onsets log-normal concentration distributions, under certain assumptions. Given the ubiquity of exponential kinetics, e.g., source and sink processes, this model suggests an explanation for the frequent observation in the environment, and elsewhere. We compare this model to other mechanisms affecting concentration distributions, e.g., source mixing. Universal Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccination is recommended in countries with high tuberculosis (TB) burden. Nevertheless, several countries have ceased universal BCG vaccination over the past 40 years, with scarce comparative epidemiological analyses regarding childhood TB after the policy change. We analysed data on childhood TB in countries that ceased universal BCG vaccination. Data sources included national/international databases, published papers, annual TB reports, and public health authority websites. Childhood TB notification rate increased in one of seven countries with available data. Pulmonary TB and TB lymphadenitis were the main causes of increasing childhood cases, while changes in severe forms of TB cases were minor. Maintaining high vaccine coverage for the target group was a common challenge after shifting selective vaccination. In some countries showing no increase in childhood TB after a BCG policy change, the majority of childhood TB cases were patients from abroad or those with overseas parents; these countries had changed immigration policies during the same period. Heterogeneity in childhood TB epidemiology was observed after ceasing universal BCG vaccination; several factors might obscure the influence of vaccination policy change. Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) can produce various motion patterns despite having only 69 motor neurons and 95 muscle cells. Previous studies successfully elucidate the connectome and role of the respective motor neuron classes related to movement. However, these models have not analyzed the distribution of the synaptic and gap connection weights. In this study, we examined whether a motor neuron and muscle network can generate oscillations for both forward and backward movement and analyzed the distribution of the trained synaptic and gap connection weights through a machine learning approach. This paper presents a connectome-based neural network model consisting of motor neurons of classes A, B, D, AS, and muscle, considering both synaptic and gap connections. A supervised learning method called backpropagation through time was adapted to train the connection parameters by feeding teacher data composed of the command neuron input and muscle cell activation. Simulation results confirmed that the motor neuron circuit could generate oscillations with different phase patterns corresponding to forward and backward movement, and could be switched at arbitrary times according to the binary inputs simulating the output of command neurons. Subsequently, we confirmed that the trained synaptic and gap connection weights followed a Boltzmann-type distribution. It should be noted that the proposed model can be trained to reproduce the activity patterns measured for an animal (HRB4 strain). Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) play a vital role in identifying important genes those is associated with the phenotypic variations of living organisms. There are several statistical methods for GWAS including the linear mixed model (LMM) which is popular for addressing the challenges of hidden population stratification and polygenic effects. However, most of these methods including LMM are sensitive to phenotypic outliers that may lead the misleading results. To overcome this problem, in this paper, we proposed a way to robustify the LMM approach for reducing the influence of outlying observations using the β-divergence method. The performance of the proposed method was investigated using both synthetic and real data analysis. Simulation results showed that the proposed method performs better than both linear regression model (LRM) and LMM approaches in terms of powers and false discovery rates in presence of phenotypic outliers. On the other hand, the proposed method performed almost similar to LMM approach but much better than LRM approach in absence of outliers. In the case of real data analysis, our proposed method identified 11 SNPs that are significantly associated with the rice flowering time. Among the identified candidate SNPs, some were involved in seed development and flowering time pathways, and some were connected with flower and other developmental processes. These identified candidate SNPs could assist rice breeding programs effectively. Thus, our findings highlighted the importance of robust GWAS in identifying candidate genes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The protection of private data is a hot research issue in the era of big data. Differential privacy is a strong privacy guarantees in data analysis. In this paper, we propose DP-MSNM, a parametric density estimation algorithm using multivariate skew-normal mixtures (MSNM) model to differential privacy. MSNM can solve the asymmetric problem of data sets, and it is could approximate any distribution through expectation–maximization (EM) algorithm. In this model, we add two extra steps on the estimated parameters in the M step of each iteration. The first step is adding calibrated noise to the estimated parameters based on Laplacian mechanism. The second step is post-processes those noisy parameters to ensure their intrinsic characteristics based on the theory of vector normalize and positive semi definition matrix. Extensive experiments using both real data sets evaluate the performance of DP-MSNM, and demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms DPGMM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

First principle calculations were performed to investigate the structural, mechanical, electronic properties, and thermodynamic properties of three binary Mg–B compounds under pressure, by using the first principle method. The results implied that the structural parameters and the mechanical properties of the Mg–B compounds without pressure are well matched with the obtainable theoretically simulated values and experimental data. The obtained pressure–volume and energy–volume revealed that the three Mg–B compounds were mechanically stable, and the volume variation decreases with an increase in the boron content. The shear and volume deformation resistance indicated that the elastic constant Cij and bulk modulus B increased when the pressure increased up to 40 GPa, and that MgB7 had the strongest capacity to resist shear and volume deformation at zero pressure, which indicated the highest hardness. Meanwhile, MgB4 exhibited a ductility transformation behaviour at 30 GPa, and MgB2 and MgB7 displayed a brittle nature under all the considered pressure conditions. The anisotropy of the three Mg–B compounds under pressure were arranged as follows: MgB4 > MgB2 > MgB7. Moreover, the total density of states varied slightly and decreased with an increase in the pressure. The Debye temperature ΘD of the Mg–B compounds gradually increased with an increase in the pressure and the boron content. The temperature and pressure dependence of the heat capacity and the thermal expansion coefficient α were both obtained on the basis of Debye model under increased pressure from 0 to 40 GPa and increased temperatures. We report on ion irradiation experiments performed on compounds belonging to the BaFe 2 As 2 family, each one involving the partial substitution of an atom of the parent compound (K for Ba, Co for Fe, and P for As), with an optimal composition to maximize the superconducting critical temperature T c . Employed ion beams were 3.5-MeV protons, 250-MeV Au ions, and 1.2-GeV Pb ions, but additional data from literature are also considered, thus covering a wide range of ions and energies. Microwave characterization based on the use of a coplanar waveguide resonator allowed us to investigate the irradiation-induced T c degradation, as well as the increase of normal state resistivity and London penetration depth. The damage was quantified in terms of displacements per atom (dpa). From this broad and comprehensive set of experimental data, clear scaling laws emerge, valid in the range of moderate irradiation-induced disorder (dpa up to 5 × 10 - 3 were investigated). In these conditions, linear trends with dpa were found for all the modification rates, while a power law dependence on the ion energy was found for heavy-ion irradiation. The homological scaffold leverages persistent homology to construct a topologically sound summary of a weighted network. However, its crucial dependency on the choice of representative cycles hinders the ability to trace back global features onto individual network components, unless one provides a principled way to make such a choice. In this paper, we apply recent advances in the computation of minimal homology bases to introduce a quasi-canonical version of the scaffold, called minimal, and employ it to analyze data both real and in silico. In this paper we compared taxonomic results obtained by metataxonomics (16S rRNA gene sequencing) and metagenomics (whole shotgun metagenomic sequencing) to investigate their reliability for bacteria profiling, studying the chicken gut as a model system. The experimental conditions included two compartments of gastrointestinal tracts and two sampling times. We compared the relative abundance distributions obtained with the two sequencing strategies and then tested their capability to distinguish the experimental conditions. The results showed that 16S rRNA gene sequencing detects only part of the gut microbiota community revealed by shotgun sequencing. Specifically, when a sufficient number of reads is available, Shotgun sequencing has more power to identify less abundant taxa than 16S sequencing. Finally, we showed that the less abundant genera detected only by shotgun sequencing are biologically meaningful, being able to discriminate between the experimental conditions as much as the more abundant genera detected by both sequencing strategies. Health prediction plays an essential role in improving the reliability of a sensor network by guiding the network maintenance. However, affected by interference factors in the real operational environment, the reliability of the monitoring information about the sensor network tends to decline, which affects the health prediction accuracy. Furthermore, the lack of monitoring information and high complexity of the network increase the difficulty of health prediction. To solve these three problems, this paper proposes a new sensor network health prediction model based on the belief rule base model with attribute reliability (BRB-r). The BRB-r model is an expert system that fully considers the qualitative knowledge and quantitative data of the sensor network. In addition, it can address the fuzziness and nondeterminacy of this qualitative knowledge. In the new model, the unreliable monitoring information of the sensor network is handled by the attribute reliability mechanism. The reliability of the sensor is calculated by the average distance method. Due to the effect of the fuzziness and nondeterminacy of expert knowledge, the health status of the sensor network cannot be accurately estimated by the initial health prediction model. Consequently, the optimization model for the health prediction model is established. Accurate and low-cost sleep measurement tools are needed in both clinical and epidemiological research. To this end, wearable accelerometers are widely used as they are both low in price and provide reasonably accurate estimates of movement. Techniques to classify sleep from the high-resolution accelerometer data primarily rely on heuristic algorithms. In this paper, we explore the potential of detecting sleep using Random forests. Models were trained using data from three different studies where 134 adult participants (70 with sleep disorder and 64 good healthy sleepers) wore an accelerometer on their wrist during a one-night polysomnography recording in the clinic. The Random forests were able to distinguish sleep-wake states with an F1 score of 73.93% on a previously unseen test set of 24 participants. Detecting when the accelerometer is not worn was also successful using machine learning ( F1-score > 93.31 % ), and when combined with our sleep detection models on day-time data provide a sleep estimate that is correlated with self-reported habitual nap behaviour ( r =. 60 ). These Random forest models have been made open-source to aid further research. In line with literature, sleep stage classification turned out to be difficult using only accelerometer data. Considering looming fatality and economic recession, effective policy making based on ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is an urgent and standing issue. Numerous issues for controlling infection have arisen from public discussion led by medical professionals. Yet understanding of these factors has been necessarily qualitative and control measures to correct unfavorable trends specific to an infection area have been lacking. The logical implement for control is a large scale stochastic model with countless parameters lacking robustness and requiring enormous data. This paper presents a remedy for this vexing problem by proposing an alternative approach. Machine learning has come to play a widely circulated role in the study of complex data in recent times. We demonstrate that when machine learning is employed together with the mechanistic framework of a mathematical model, there can be a considerably enhanced understanding of complex systems. A mathematical model describing the viral infection dynamics reveals two transmissibility parameters influenced by the management strategies in the area for the control of the current pandemic. Both parameters readily yield the peak infection rate and means for flattening the curve, which is correlated to different management strategies by employing machine learning, enabling comparison of different strategies and suggesting timely alterations. Treatment of population data with the model shows that restricted non-essential business closure, school closing and strictures on mass gathering influence the spread of infection. While a rational strategy for initiation of an economic reboot would call for a wider perspective of the local economics, the model can speculate on its timing based on the status of the infection as reflected by its potential for an unacceptably renewed viral onslaught. Laparoscopic surgery can be exhausting and frustrating, and the cognitive load experienced by surgeons may have a major impact on patient safety as well as healthcare economics. As cognitive load decreases with increasing proficiency, its robust assessment through physiological data can help to develop more effective training and certification procedures in this area. We measured data from 31 novices during laparoscopic exercises to extract features based on cardiac and ocular variables. These were compared with traditional behavioural and subjective measures in a dual-task setting. We found significant correlations between the features and the traditional measures. The subjective task difficulty, reaction time, and completion time were well predicted by the physiology features. Reaction times to randomly timed auditory stimuli were correlated with the mean of the heart rate ( r = - 0.29 ) and heart rate variability ( r = 0.4 ). Completion times were correlated with the physiologically predicted values with a correlation coefficient of 0.84. We found that the multi-modal set of physiology features was a better predictor than any individual feature and artificial neural networks performed better than linear regression. The physiological correlates studied in this paper, translated into technological products, could help develop standardised and more easily regulated frameworks for training and certification. A data movie of stochastic optical localization nanoscopy contains spatial and temporal correlations, both providing information of emitter locations. The majority of localization algorithms in the literature estimate emitter locations by frame-by-frame localization (FFL), which exploit only the spatial correlation and leave the temporal correlation into the FFL nanoscopy images. The temporal correlation contained in the FFL images, if exploited, can improve the localization accuracy and the image quality. In this paper, we analyze the properties of the FFL images in terms of root mean square minimum distance (RMSMD) and root mean square error (RMSE). It is shown that RMSMD and RMSE can be potentially reduced by a maximum fold equal to the square root of the average number of activations per emitter. Analyzed and revealed are also several statistical properties of RMSMD and RMSE and their relationship with respect to a large number of data frames, bias and variance of localization errors, small localization errors, sample drift, and the worst FFL image. Numerical examples are taken and the results confirm the prediction of analysis. The ideas about how to develop an algorithm to exploit the temporal correlation of FFL images are also briefly discussed. The results suggest development of two kinds of localization algorithms: the algorithms that can exploit the temporal correlation of FFL images and the unbiased localization algorithms. In this work, a total of 72 samples of non-thermally treated commercial table olives were obtained from different markets of the world. Then, prokaryotic diversity in olive biofilms was investigated by metataxonomic analysis. A total of 660 different OTUs were obtained, belonging to Archaea (2.12%) and Bacteria domains (97.88%). From these, 41 OTUs with a proportion of sequences ≥ 0.01% were studied by compositional data analysis. Only two genera were found in all samples, Lactobacillus, which was the predominant bacteria in the biofilm consortium (median 54.99%), and Pediococcus (26.09%). Celerinatantimonas, Leuconostoc, Alkalibacterium, Pseudomonas, Marinilactibacillus, Weissella, and the family Enterobacteriaceae were also present in at least 80% of samples. Regarding foodborne pathogens, only Enterobacteriaceae, Vibrio, and Staphylococcus were detected in at least 91.66%, 75.00%, and 54.10% of samples, respectively, but their median values were always below 0.15%. Compositional data analysis allowed discriminating between lye treated and natural olive samples, as well as between olives packaged in glass, PET and plastic bags. Leuconostoc, Celerinatantimonas, and Alkalibacterium were the bacteria genera with a higher discriminant power among samples. These results expand our knowledge of the bacteria diversity in olive biofilms, providing information about the sanitary and hygienic status of this ready-to-eat fermented vegetable. Translational research of many disease areas requires a longitudinal understanding of disease development and progression across all biologically relevant scales. Several corresponding studies are now available. However, to compile a comprehensive picture of a specific disease, multiple studies need to be analyzed and compared. A large number of clinical studies is nowadays conducted in the context of drug development in pharmaceutical research. However, legal and ethical constraints typically do not allow for sharing sensitive patient data. In consequence there exist data "silos", which slow down the overall scientific progress in translational research. In this paper, we suggest the idea of a virtual cohort (VC) to address this limitation. Our key idea is to describe a longitudinal patient cohort with the help of a generative statistical model, namely a modular Bayesian Network, in which individual modules are represented as sparse autoencoder networks. We show that with the help of such a model we can simulate subjects that are highly similar to real ones. Our approach allows for incorporating arbitrary multi-scale, multi-modal data without making specific distribution assumptions. Moreover, we demonstrate the possibility to simulate interventions (e.g. via a treatment) in the VC. Overall, our proposed approach opens the possibility to build sufficiently realistic VCs for multiple disease areas in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multiple competing normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models have been proposed for predicting symptomatic radiation-induced lung injury in human. In this paper we tested the efficacy of four common NTCP models applied quantitatively to sub-clinical X-ray computed tomography (CT)-density changes in the lung following radiotherapy. Radiotherapy planning datasets and follow-up chest CTs were obtained in eight patients treated for targets within the lung or hilar region. Image pixel-wise radiation dose exposure versus change in observable CT Hounsfield units was recorded for early (2–5 months) and late (6–9 months) time-points. Four NTCP models, Lyman, Logistic, Weibull and Poisson, were fit to the population data. The quality of fits was assessed by five statistical criteria. All four models fit the data significantly (p < 0.05) well at early, late and cumulative time points. The Lyman model fitted best for early effects while the Weibull Model fitted best for late effects. No significant difference was found between the fits of the models and with respect to parameters D50 and γ50. The D50 estimates were more robust than γ50 to image registration error. In this paper we develop statistical algorithms to infer possible cardiac pathologies, based on data collected from 24 h Holter recording over a sample of 2829 labelled patients; labels highlight whether a patient is suffering from cardiac pathologies. In the first part of the work we analyze statistically the heart-beat series associated to each patient and we work them out to get a coarse-grained description of heart variability in terms of 49 markers well established in the reference community. These markers are then used as inputs for a multi-layer feed-forward neural network that we train in order to make it able to classify patients. However, before training the network, preliminary operations are in order to check the effective number of markers (via principal component analysis) and to achieve data augmentation (because of the broadness of the input data). With such groundwork, we finally train the network and show that it can classify with high accuracy (at most ~85% successful identifications) patients that are healthy from those displaying atrial fibrillation or congestive heart failure. In the second part of the work, we still start from raw data and we get a classification of pathologies in terms of their related networks: patients are associated to nodes and links are drawn according to a similarity measure between the related heart-beat series. We study the emergent properties of these networks looking for features (e.g., degree, clustering, clique proliferation) able to robustly discriminate between networks built over healthy patients or over patients suffering from cardiac pathologies. X-ray diffraction, Amorphous silicon, Multi-objective optimization, Monte Carlo methods. This paper addresses a difficult inverse problem that involves the reconstruction of a three-dimensional model of tetrahedral amorphous semiconductors via inversion of diffraction data. By posing the material-structure determination as a multiobjective optimization program, it has been shown that the problem can be solved accurately using a few structural constraints, but no total-energy functionals/forces, which describe the local chemistry of amorphous networks. The approach yields highly realistic models of amorphous silicon, with no or only a few coordination defects (≤1%), a narrow bond-angle distribution of width 9–11.5°, and an electronic gap of 0.8–1.4 eV. These data-driven information-based models have been found to produce electronic and vibrational properties of a-Si that match accurately with experimental data and rival that of the Wooten-Winer-Weaire models. The study confirms the effectiveness of a multiobjective optimization approach to the structural determination of complex materials, and resolves a long-standing dispute concerning the uniqueness of a model of tetrahedral amorphous semiconductors obtained via inversion of diffraction data. Aviation is a key sector of the economy, contributing at least 3% to gross domestic product (GDP) in the UK and the US. Currently, airline performance statistics are published with a three month delay. However, aircraft now broadcast their location in real-time using the Automated Dependent Surveillance Broadcast system (ADS-B). In this paper, we analyse a global dataset of flights since July 2016. We first show that it is possible to accurately estimate airline flight volumes using ADS-B data, which is available immediately. Next, we demonstrate that real-time knowledge of flight volumes can be a leading indicator for aviation's direct contribution to GDP in both the UK and the US. Using ADS-B data could therefore help move us towards real-time estimates of GDP, which would equip policymakers with the information to respond to shocks more quickly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
