A recent study published in Science reveals that racial bias can influence tenure and promotion decisions in academia. The study analyzed over 1500 tenure and promotion decisions at five research-intensive universities in the United States and found that Black and Hispanic faculty members received more negative votes compared to their white and Asian colleagues, even when they were equally productive. The bias was particularly evident at the college level, where committees were less familiar with the candidates and their work. The study suggests possible remedies, such as adjusting the solicitation of external review letters and emphasizing scholarly productivity in the evaluation process. However, some critics argue that the study overlooks ongoing disparities and racial biases faced by Asian scholars. Overall, the study highlights the need for increased awareness and efforts to address racial bias in academia. [Extracted from the article]
