Abstract

The article focuses on professor Richard Tapia at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Topics discussed include the creation of the Richard Tapia Center for Excellence and Equity, which helps minority students earn postdoctoral degrees (Ph.D.s) in the fields of mathematics and computer science, statistics on the number of black and Hispanic faculty in math-intensive disciplines between 2002-2012, and Tapia's experience with institutional racism while at Stanford University.
