Research advances in the study of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) may increase understanding of and treatment for the disorder. IUGR is responsible for many types of prenatal and postnatal complications and death. IUGR may be the fetus's adaptation to a lack of glucose in its blood supply. IUGR may be difficult to quantify, but should be understood as a lack of normal fetal growth. IUGR may be caused by dysfunctions of certain growth factors or of the placenta. Possible prenatal treatments include insulin-like growth factor-1 and human growth hormone. Better diagnostic techniques are needed., ABBREVIATIONS.
