The article focuses on several socio-political issues around the world during 1957. U.S. President Dwight David Eisenhower won a great diplomatic victory with the Russians at Geneva, although he failed even to bring up the fact that they had started supplying arms to Nasser. Great Britain and France started on their disastrous intervention, This was a mistake but, under the circumstances, at least understandable Eisenhower reacted in characteristic terms of moralistic naivete. The U.S. is always unctuous always sanctimonious always moralistically naive and generally wrong.

The article focuses on the book "Testament of Experience," by Vera Brittain. Brittain displays, with the rounded fullness of a three dimensional model in front of a search-light, the basic characteristics of the gawdsaker as they were seen in the l930's. Gawdsaking is a political epiphenomenon. Like the shadow cast by a building, it exists as the reflection of something else, which was the power of Great Britain. After the Waterloo peace, British gawdsakers began by lavishing advice, rebukes, denunciations and scoldings on their own governing class. Then they gradually worked outwards, seeking fresh worlds to canker.

The United States has now, and will increasingly have as each year goes by, all of the economic power it could possibly use to create all the deterrent military power it could possibly need. It makes not the slightest difference if a nation has 120 million tons of steel capacity or 150 million tons if it takes only 5 million tons to produce the necessary military weaponry.

In this article, the author focuses on the increasing determination and power, resulting in race tensions, of Negroes in several American cities and towns, specially in North Carolina. Their increasing participation and activeness in every fields, specially in the field of literature, can better be seen in presents days. For instance, the recent defeat of Senator Frank P. Graham in North Carolina shows how powerful the Negro issue still is. Most Negroes in the area, with the exception of teachers, are workers on farms, in fertilizer factories, or in the lumber yards. Yet their ability to think and to form sound judgments is not affected. In another town, where Negro determination had previously elected a Negro councilman, registration days presented a much brighter picture. Here the Negroes had asked that the law be carried out equally for both whites and Negroes, each to take the same test.
