Abstract

The article focuses on the book "Testament of Experience," by Vera Brittain. Brittain displays, with the rounded fullness of a three dimensional model in front of a search-light, the basic characteristics of the gawdsaker as they were seen in the l930's. Gawdsaking is a political epiphenomenon. Like the shadow cast by a building, it exists as the reflection of something else, which was the power of Great Britain. After the Waterloo peace, British gawdsakers began by lavishing advice, rebukes, denunciations and scoldings on their own governing class. Then they gradually worked outwards, seeking fresh worlds to canker.
