In order to increase the content of mineral admixtures in cement, this study proposes a method for preparing a high-volume mineral admixture cementitious material (HMAC) using superfine cement as a reverse filling material. Firstly, superfine cement is prepared through mechanical grinding. Then, the activity of mineral admixtures (such as slag and fly ash) is enhanced by mechanical grinding, sulfate activation, and alkali activation methods. Meanwhile, the evolution of HMCM from microstructure to macroscopic mechanical behavior is studied by combining a laser particle size analyzer and a scanning electron microscope. Furthermore, the reverse filling mechanism of superfine cement on mineral admixtures under different activation conditions is proposed. Results show that superfine cement can largely improve the utilization rate of cement clinker and the compressive strength of cementitious materials. In the condition that the compressive strength is not lower than that of the control group (without mineral admixture), the content of mineral admixture can be increased to 50%, 70%, and 90% after mechanical grinding, sulfate activation, and alkali activation, respectively. Nuclear magnetic resonance can only quantitatively obtain porosity and pore size distribution, but as a conventional microstructure observation technology, scanning electron microscope (SEM) can select different magnifications to observe the microstructure of backfill materials. However, the processing of SEM images is not deep enough. In this paper, Image-Pro Plus 6.0 software was used to extract the data from SEM images, and the parameters of the area, and the perimeter, aspect ratio and roundness of the pores in the SEM images were obtained. The fractal characteristics of the pores in the SEM image were obtained by using the slit island method fractal theory. The concretization and quantification analysis of the pores' complexity were achieved. A functional relationship model for the strength and pore parameters was constructed; thus, the influence law of pore characteristics on strength was quantitatively analyzed. The conclusions included: (1) Pore parameters indicate that most pores in backfill are irregular, and only a few pores are regular—however, the whole structure has good fractal characteristics (R2 > 0.96). (2) The fractal dimension of pores is directly proportional to the roundness, the aspect ratio, and the pore content of pores—which indicates that the complexity of pores is related to both pore shape and pore content. (3) The strength had a linear inverse relationship with the roundness, aspect ratio, pore content, and fractal dimension—which indicates that all characteristics of pores have a certain influence on the strength. Silica nanoparticles (nano-silica) were used as synergistic agents with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER) to enhance flame retardancy of polypropylene (PP) in this research. The composites were prepared using a melt-mixing method. The influences of nano-silica on the fire performance of composites were thoroughly discussed, which promotes understanding of nano-silica on the flame-retardant performance of polypropylene composite. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) results indicated that the nano-silica with a diameter of about 95 ± 3.9 nm were dispersed favorably in the composite matrix, which might elevate its synergistic effect with intumescent flame retardant and improve the flame retardancy of polypropylene composite. The synergistic effects between nano-silica and intumescent flame retardant on PP composites were studied using the limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test, and cone calorimeter test (CCT). The total amount of flame retardant was maintained at 30%. When the dosage of nano-silica was 1 wt.%, the LOI value of PP/IFR/Si1.0 composite reached 27.3% and its UL-94 classification reached V-1. Based on the parameters of the CCT, the introduction of nano-silica induced composites with depressed heat release rate (HRR) and peak heat release rate (PHRR). The PHRR of PP/IFR/Si0.5 was only 295.8 kW/m2, which was 17% lower than that of PP/IFR. Moreover, the time to PHRR of PP/IFR/Si0.5 was delayed to 396 s, which was about 36 s later than that without nano-silica. EDS was used to quantitatively analyze the distribution of silica in charred residue. The EDS results indicated that the silica tended to accumulate on the surface during the fire. A systematic study was conducted to investigate the distinct mechanisms involved in the formation of the inner surfaces of cylindrical and parallelepipedic-shaped structures. The surface roughness, flatness, and sinking distance were used as key indices to measure the quality of overhanging surfaces, while the surface flatness and roughness were used to evaluate the quality of the side and bottom surfaces of the inner hole. The inner surface morphology was observed using a scanning electron microscope and a white light interferometer. The test results show that the quality of the overhanging surface had a significant impact on the quality of the parallelepipedic-shaped inner hole. In contrast, the cylindrical-shaped inner hole had a shorter but more uniformly distributed overhanging surface, resulting in a different behavior of the overhanging and side surface quality. An improved model of the overhanging surface was established by combining all of the above results and comparing them with the traditional Euler Bernoulli beam model. The factors affecting the quality of the overhanging surface were analyzed, and measures for improving the quality of the overhanging surface during the SLM manufacturing process were proposed. Cold forging is suitable for manufacturing thin-walled tubes; however, a poorly planned forging process results in serious quality problems. This paper aims to determine an appropriate cold forging process for thin-walled A286 superalloy tube with ideal forming quality. We analyzed the effects of the two forging processes with reverse forging sequences on forming defects and hardness distribution in the thin-walled tubes via finite element simulation. The methods of optical microscope, micro-hardness, scanning electron microscope, and electron-backscattered diffraction were used to validate the tube forming quality. The simulation results revealed that the Type-I process was an appropriate forging process for meeting the quality requirements. For the Type-I process, an underfilling defect was observed at the bottom of the rod section of the tube. The stress concentration in the head section was lower than that in the Type-II process, potentially reducing the probability of crack initiation. Compared to the rod section, the head section may exhibit higher hardness magnitudes due to the greater strain distribution. The experimental results confirmed the feasibility of the Type-I process. Mg-3Sn-1Mn-xLa alloy bars were prepared using backward extrusion, and the effects of the La content on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the alloy were systematically studied using an optical microscope (OM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and tensile tests. The results of this research show that the Mg2Sn phases were mainly formed at the α-Mg grain boundaries and within the grains in the Mg-3Sn-1Mn alloy. After adding a certain amount of La, the plate-shaped MgSnLa compounds consisting of Mg17La2, Mg2Sn, and La5Sn3 gradually disappeared in the α-Mg matrix and grain boundaries. With an increase in La content, the Mg2Sn phase in the crystal was gradually refined and spheroidized. When the content of La reached 1.5%, the tensile strength of the alloy reached 300 Mpa and the elongation reached 12.6%, i.e., 25% and 85% increases, respectively, compared to the Mg-3Sn-1Mn alloy. The plate-shaped compound of Mg-3Sn-1Mn-1.5La had an average length of 3000 ± 50 nm, while the width was 350 ± 10 nm. Meanwhile, the extruded alloy's grain size was significantly refined, and there were many small cleavage steps and dimples in the fracture surface of the alloy. When the La content reached 2%, the alloy performance showed a downward trend due to the coarsening of the grains. The formed plate-shaped MgSnLa compounds and Mg2Sn phases were consistent with the α-Mg matrix. Mg77+xNi20−xLa3 (x = 0, 5, 10, 15) alloys were successfully prepared by the vacuum induction melting method. The structural characterizations of the alloys were performed by using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. The effects of nickel content on the microstructure and hydrogen storage kinetic of the as-cast alloys were investigated. The results showed that the alloys are composed of a primary phase of Mg2Ni, lamella eutectic composites of Mg + Mg2Ni, and some amount of LaMg12 and La2Mg17. Nickel addition significantly improved the hydrogen-absorption kinetic performance of the alloy. At 683 K, Mg77Ni20La3 alloy and Mg82Ni15La3 alloy underwent hydrogen absorption and desorption reactions for 2 h, respectively, and their hydrogen absorption and desorption capacities were 4.16 wt.% and 4.1 wt.%, and 4.92 wt.% and 4.69 wt.%, respectively. Using the Kissinger equation, it was calculated that the activation energy values of Mg77Ni20La3, Mg82Ni15La3, Mg87Ni10La3 and Mg92Ni5La3 alloys were in the range of 68.5~75.2 kJ/mol, much lower than 150~160 kJ/mol of MgH2. The objectives of this study were to compare the effects of various acid solutions combined with ultrasonics as an aid to remove mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)-based root canal filling and to assess their effect on the surface topography and microhardness of root canal dentin. Materials and Method: Fifty human permanent single rooted and single canaled freshly extracted teeth were decoronated and sectioned apically to prepare the middle third of root sections of 5 mm length. The canals were prepared in a step-back manner. OrthoMTA was packed throughout the prepared canals. These root sections were incubated for one week and subsequently randomly allocated to five groups (n = 10) according to the OrthoMTA removal method: No treatment (NT); 5% glycolic acid + ultrasonics (5% GA+U); 10% glycolic acid + ultrasonics (10% GA+U); 10% citric acid + ultrasonics (10% CA+U); Distilled water + ultrasonics (DW+U). A 1 mm deep well was created within the coronal end of the set OrthoMTA. Wells were filled with each respective test solution and left for 5 min. Thereafter, further removal of OrthoMTA used a specific ultrasonic tip. Finally, the canals were flushed using 1 mL of the respective test solutions and activated with a Controlled Memory ultrasonic tip for two cycles of 20 s each followed by flushing with 1 mL of distilled water and paper point drying of the canals. Then, specimens were longitudinally split into two halves and examined under a scanning electron microscope (1000×) to assess the residual OrthoMTA and surface topography of root canal dentin. The Vickers surface microhardness of treated radicular dentin was measured using the HMV-2 microhardness tester. Result: Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test. Significant differences for residual OrthoMTA were observed between (10% GA+U) with (5% GA+U), (10% CA+U), (DW+U) and (NT) (p value < 0.01). In the context of microhardness, (5% GA+U) and (10% GA+U) showed statistically significant difference compared to (NT), (10% CA+U) and (DW+U) (p value < 0.01). In this paper, ground granulated blast furnace slag, steel slag, red mud, waste ceramic powder, and desulfurization gypsum were used as raw materials to develop a kind of multi-source solid-waste-based soft soil solidification material. Three ratios and the strength activity index were used to determine the fractions of different solid wastes. The mineralogical and microstructural characterization was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis–differential scanning calorimetry (TG&DSC) tests. The results showed that the unconfined compressive strength of the three types of soft soil increases with an increase in the content of the solidifying agent. The failure strain of the stabilized soil decreases from 1.0–1.3% to 0.75–1.0%, and the failure mode gradually changes from plastic failure to brittle failure. The optimum content of the solidifying agent was determined to be 17% (the lime saturation factor (KH), silica modulus (SM), and alumina modulus (IM) of the solidifying agent were set to 0.68, 1.74, and 1.70, respectively), and the unconfined compressive strength (28 d) of the solidified soil (sandy soil, silty clay, and organic clay) was 3.16 MPa, 2.05 MPa, 1.04 MPa, respectively. Both measurements can satisfy the technical requirements for a cement–soil mixing pile, suggesting the possibility of using various types of solid waste as a substitute for cement. Modern construction projects are often challenging, which has increased the demand for innovative materials that ensure improved safety, durability, and functionality. To explore the potential of enhancing soil material functionality, this study synthesized polyurethane on the surface of glass beads and evaluated their mechanical properties. The synthesis of polymer proceeded according to a predetermined procedure, where the polymerization was confirmed through analysis of chemical structure by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and microstructure observation by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) after complete synthesis. The constrained modulus (M) and the maximum shear modulus (Gmax) of mixtures with synthesized materials were examined by using an oedometer cell equipped with bender elements under a zero lateral strain condition. Both M and Gmax decreased with an increase in the contents of polymerized particles due to a decrease in the number of interparticle contacts and contact stiffness induced by the surface modification. The adhesion property of the polymer induced a stress-dependent change in M but was observed to have little effect on Gmax. The paper deals with the dilatometric study of high-alloy martensitic tool steel with the designation M398 (BÖHLER), which is produced by the powder metallurgy process. These materials are used to produce screws for injection molding machines in the plastic industry. Increasing the life cycle of these screws leads to significant economic savings. This contribution focuses on creating the CCT diagram of the investigated powder steel in the range of cooling rates from 100 to 0.01 °C/s. JMatPro® API v7.0 simulation software was used to compare the experimentally measured CCT diagram. The measured dilatation curves were confronted with a microstructural analysis, which was evaluated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The M398 material contains a large number of carbide particles that occur in the form of M7C3 and MC and are based on Cr and V. EDS analysis was used to evaluate the distribution of selected chemical elements. A comparison of the surface hardness of all samples in relation to the given cooling rates was also carried out. Subsequently, the nanoindentation properties of the formed individual phases as well as the carbides, where the nanohardness and reduced modulus of elasticity (carbides and matrix) were evaluated. In order to study the complex erosion–corrosion mechanism of friction stud welded joints in seawater, experiments were carried out in the mixed solution of 3 wt% sea sand and 3.5% NaCl at flow rates of 0 m/s, 0.2 m/s, 0.4 m/s, and 0.6 m/s. The effects of corrosion and erosion–corrosion at different flow rates on materials were compared. The corrosion resistance of X65 friction stud welded joint was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves. The corrosion morphology was observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the corrosion products were analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the corrosion current density decreased first and then increased with the increase in the simulated seawater flow rate, which indicated that the corrosion resistance of the friction stud welded joint increased first and then decreased. The corrosion products are FeOOH (α-FeOOH and γ-FeOOH), and Fe3O4. This study examines the impacts of copper and boron in parts per million (ppm) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of spheroidal graphite cast iron (SCI). Boron's inclusion increases the ferrite content whereas copper augments the stability of pearlite. The interaction between the two significantly influences the ferrite content. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis indicates that boron alters the enthalpy change of the α + Fe3C → γ conversion and the α → γ conversion. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis confirms the locations of copper and boron. Mechanical property assessments using a universal testing machine show that the inclusion of boron and copper decreases the tensile strength and yield strength of SCI, but simultaneously enhances elongation. Additionally, in SCI production, the utilization of copper-bearing scrap and trace amounts of boron-containing scrap metal, especially in the casting of ferritic nodular cast iron, offers potential for resource recycling. This highlights the importance of resource conservation and recycling in advancing sustainable manufacturing practices. Background: The use of effective, low-cost, and easy-to-use products for early caries management will avoid loss of dental vitality and impairment in oral function. The ability of fluoride to re-mineralize dental surfaces has been widely reported as well as vitamin D demonstrated to have significant potential in improving the remineralization of early lesions on enamel surfaces. The aim of the present ex vivo study was to evaluate the effect of a fluoride and vitamin D solution in terms of formation of mineral crystals on the enamel of primary teeth, and their permanence over time on dental surfaces. Methods: Sixteen extracted deciduous teeth were cut to obtain 64 specimens that were divided into two groups. The first consisted of immersion of specimens for 4 days in a fluoride solution (T1); in the second group, the specimens were immersed for 4 days (T1) in fluoride and Vitamin D solution, and for a further 2 (T2) and 4 days (T3) in saline solution. Then, samples were morphologically analyzed by using Variable Pressure Scanning Electron Microscope (VPSEM) and underwent 3D surface reconstruction. Results: After a 4-day immersion in both solutions, octahedral-shaped crystals were formed on the enamel surface of primary teeth, demonstrating any statistically significant differences in terms of number, size, and shape. Moreover, the binding of the same crystals seemed to be strong enough to be maintained until 4 days in saline solution. However, a partial dissolution was observed in a time-dependent manner. Conclusions: A topical application of fluoride and Vitamin D promoted the formation of persistent mineral crystals on enamel surfaces of deciduous teeth and should be further studied to be potentially used as an alternative strategy in preventive dentistry. The current investigation focuses on the stability of the magnesium oxide-based cementitious system under the action of sulfate attack and the dry-wet cycle. The phase change in the magnesium oxide-based cementitious system was quantitatively analyzed by X-ray diffraction, combined with thermogravimetry/derivative thermogravimetry and scanning electron microscope, to explore its erosion behavior under an erosion environment. The results revealed that, in the fully reactive magnesium oxide-based cementitious system under the environment of high concentration sulfate erosion, there was only magnesium silicate hydrate gel formation and no other phase; however, the reaction process of the incomplete magnesium oxide-based cementitious system was delayed, but not inhibited, by the environment of high-concentration sulfate, and it tended to turn completely into a magnesium silicate hydrate gel. The magnesium silicate hydrate sample outperformed the cement sample, in terms of stability in a high-concentration sulfate erosion environment, but it tended to degrade considerably more rapidly, and to a greater extent, than Portland cement, in both dry and wet sulfate cycle environments. In this study, we investigated the creep properties of ZK60 alloy and a ZK60/SiCp composite at 200 °C and 250 °C in the 10–80 MPa stress range after the KOBO extrusion and precipitation hardening process. The true stress exponent was obtained in the range of 1.6–2.3 for both the unreinforced alloy and the composite. The apparent activation energy of the unreinforced alloy was found to be in the range of 80.91–88.09 kJ/mol, and that of the composite was found to be in the range of 47.15–81.60 kJ/mol, and this indicated the grain boundary sliding (GBS) mechanism. An investigation of crept microstructures using an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that at 200 °C, the predominant strengthening mechanisms at low stresses were the formation of twin, double twin, and shear bands, and that by increasing the stress, kink bands were activated. At 250 °C, it was found that a slip band was created in the microstructure, and this effectively delayed GBS. The failure surfaces and adjacent regions were examined using SEM, and it was discovered that the primary cause of failure was cavity nucleation around precipitations and reinforcement particles. Due to its excellent mechanical properties and high aspect ratio, graphene can significantly improve the water and chloride ion permeability resistance of cementitious materials. However, few studies have investigated the effect of graphene size on the water and chloride ion permeability resistance of cementitious materials. The main issues are as follows: How do different sizes of graphene affect the water and chloride ion permeability resistance of cement-based materials, and by what means do they affect these properties? To address these issues, in this paper, two different sizes of graphene were used to prepare graphene dispersion, which was then mixed with cement to make graphene-reinforced cement-based materials. The permeability and microstructure of samples were investigated. Results show that the addition of graphene effectively improved both the water and chloride ion permeability resistance of cement-based materials significantly. The SEM (scanning electron microscope) images and XRD (X-ray diffraction) analysis show that the introduction of either type of graphene could effectively regulate the crystal size and morphology of hydration products and reduce the crystal size and the number of needle-like and rod-like hydration products. The main types of hydrated products are calcium hydroxide, ettringite, etc. The template effect of large-size graphene was more obvious, and a large number of regular flower-like cluster hydration products were formed, which made the structure of cement paste more compact and thus significantly improved the resistance to the penetration of water and chloride ions into the matrix of the concrete. This report addresses a way to reduce the usage of highly toxic lead in diagnostic X-ray shielding by developing a cost-effective, eco-friendly nano-tungsten trioxide (WO3) epoxy composite for low-weight aprons. Zinc (Zn)-doped WO3 nanoparticles of 20 to 400 nm were synthesized by an inexpensive and scalable chemical acid–precipitation method. The prepared nanoparticles were subjected to X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence, high-resolution–transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, and the results showed that doping plays a critical role in influencing the physico-chemical properties. The prepared nanoparticles were used as shielding material in this study, which were dispersed in a non-water soluble durable epoxy resin polymer matrix and the dispersed materials were coated over a rexine cloth using the drop-casting method. The X-ray shielding performance was evaluated by estimating the linear attenuation coefficient (μ), mass attenuation coefficient (μm), half value layer (HVL), and X-ray percentage of attenuation. Overall, an improvement in X-ray attenuation in the range of 40–100 kVp was observed for the undoped WO3 nanoparticles and Zn-doped WO3 nanoparticles, which was nearly equal to lead oxide-based aprons (reference material). At 40 kVp, the percentage of attenuation of 2% Zn doped WO3 was 97% which was better than that of other prepared aprons. This study proves that 2% Zn doped WO3 epoxy composite yields a better particle size distribution, μm, and lower HVL value and hence it can be a convenient lead free X-ray shielding apron. Global warming has led to a change in climatic conditions. Since 2006, drought has contributed to a reduction of food production and other agriculture-based products in many countries. The accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has caused some changes in the composition of fruits and vegetables, making them less nutritious. To analyse this situation, a study was conducted on the effect of drought on the quality of fibres provided by the main fibre crops in Europe, namely flax (Linum usitatissimum). The experiment consisted of growing flax under controlled comparative conditions with designed different irrigation levels, such as 25%, 35% and 45% field soil moisture. Three varieties of flax were grown in 2019, 2020 and 2021 in the greenhouses of the Institute of Natural Fibres and Medicinal Plants in Poland. Fibre parameters, such as linear density, length and strength, were evaluated according to relevant standards. In addition, scanning electron microscope images of the cross-section and longitudinal view of the fibres were analysed. The results of the study indicated that deficiency of water during the flax growing season resulted in lowering of fibre linear density and tenacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The hot cracking behaviors of Mg-5Zn-xEr (x = 0.83, 1.25, 2.5, 5 wt.%) alloys are investigated by optimized hot cracking experimental apparatus, optical microscope, and scanning electron microscope, such as contraction behaviors, feeding behaviors, and permeability characteristics. It is found that the solid phase fraction at hot crack initiation and within the freezing range both increased with increasing Er contents up to 2.5 wt.% and then decreased at 5 wt.% Er content. The Mg-5Zn-5Er alloy exhibits the lowest solid phase fraction (87.4%) and a reduced freezing range (74.2 °C), which leads to more effective liquid feeding in the latter stages of solidification. Combined with the grain size, the permeability of the mushy zone, and fracture morphology, the overall permeability is optimal in the Mg-5Zn-5Er alloy, which is beneficial for feeding the cavities and micro-pores. Meanwhile, a large amount of W phase precipitated by the eutectic reaction (L→α-Mg + W phase), which facilitates healing of the incurred cracking. Conversely, the Mg-5Zn-2.5Er alloy shows inferior feeding ability due to the lowest solid phase fraction (98.3%), wide freezing range (199.5 °C), and lowest permeability. Therefore, the Mg-5Zn-2.5Er alloy exhibits maximal hot cracking susceptibility, and the Mg-5Zn-5Er alloy exhibits minimal hot cracking susceptibility. This work provides guidance for improving the hot cracking resistance of cast Mg-Zn-Er alloy and enables an understanding of the hot cracking behaviors of Mg-Zn-RE alloys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High mud content in the sand has a negative impact on cement mortar but there is little research on Alkali-activated slag (AAS) mortar. In order to explore the impacts of mud content in the sand on the performance of AAS mortar, this paper used sand that contains silt, clay, and a mixture of silt and clay; tested the setting time of AAS with different mud contents of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10%; and measured the unconfined compressive strength and beam flexural strength of 3 d, 7 d, and 28 d AAS mortar specimens. The microstructure of AAS mortar with different kinds of mud was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), the elemental composition of the hydration product was tested by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and the AAS interaction mechanism with different kinds of mud was analyzed. The main conclusions are: the higher the mud content in the sand, the shorter the initial setting time and the longer the final setting time of AAS, mainly because the mud in the sand affects the hydration process; mud content above 4% causes a rapid decrease in the compressive and flexural strengths of AAS mortar, mainly because the mud affects the hydration process and hinders the bonding of the hydration product with the sand. When there is no mud in the sand, the main hydration product of AAS is dense calcium-alumina-silicate-hydrate (C-A-S-H) gel. When the sand contains silt, the hydration product of AAS is loose C-A-S-H gel. When the sand contains clay, the hydration products of AAS contain C-A-S-H gel and a small amount of sodium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (N-A-S-H), and needle-like crystals. The results presented in this paper on the appropriateness of using of blast furnace slag (BFS) in the composition of roads make an original contribution to the development of sustainable materials with the aim to reduce the carbon footprint and the consumption of natural resources. The novelty of this work consists of determining the optimal percentage of BSF in road concrete, in order to: increase mechanical resistances, reduce contractions in the hardening process, and ensure increased corrosion resistances, even superior to classic cement-based mixtures. Thus, the physical-mechanical characteristics and the microstructure of some road concretes were studied in the laboratory for three different recipes. We kept the same amount of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) as a substitute for Portland cement, respectively three percentages of 20%, 40%, 60% air-cooled blast furnace slag (ACBFS) and crushed as sand substitute from now on called S54/20, S54/40, S54/60. Drying shrinkage, mechanical resistances, carbonation-induced corrosion, microstructure characterization of hardened concretes, and degree of crystallinity by SEM and XRD measurements were analyzed after a longer curing period of 150/480 days. The obtained results on the three BSF mixtures indicated a reduction of drying shrinkage and implicitly increased the tensile resistance by bending to 150 days well above the level of the blank composition. The degree of crystallinity and the content of the majority phases of the mineralogical compounds, albites, quartz, and tobermorite out of the three BSF samples justifies the increase in the compressive strengths at the age of 480 days in comparison with the test samples. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction measurements showed the highest compactness and lowest portlandite crystal content for the S54/20 slag composite. Future research concerns are the realization of experimental sections in situ, the study of the influence of BFS on the elasticity module of road concrete, and the opportunity to use other green materials that can contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint, keeping the physical and mechanical properties of road concrete at a high level. This article focuses on the mechanical property analysis of important models omitted in many scientific papers (thin-walled specimens) printed from innovative material—such as PLA + bronze composite—using fused deposition modelling technology. It discusses the printing process, the measurement of the specimen geometry, the static tensile strength tests and the microscopic examinations conducted with a scanning electron microscope. The findings of this study could be used as an input to further research into the accuracy of filament deposition and the modification of base materials with bronze powder and for the optimization of the machine design, e.g., with the use of cell structures. The experimental results indicated that the thin-walled models fabricated using FDM showed substantial differences in tensile strength, depending on the specimen's thickness and the printing orientation. The effect of different heat inputs of 1.45 kJ/mm, 1.78 kJ/mm and 2.31 kJ/mm on the microstructure and mechanical properties of deposited metals of the self-developed AWS A5.28 E120C-K4 high strength steel flux-cored wire was studied by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and mechanical property test. With the increase in heat input, the results showed that the microstructure of deposited metals became coarse. Acicular ferrite increased at first and then decreased, granular bainite increased and degenerated upper bainite and martensite decreased slightly. Under the low heat input of 1.45 kJ/mm, the cooling rate was fast and the element diffusion was uneven, which caused composition segregation and easy to form large size inclusions SiO2-TiC-CeAlO3 with weak binding to the matrix. Under the middle heat input of 1.78 kJ/mm, the composite rare earth inclusions in dimples were mainly TiC-CeAlO3. The dimples were small and uniformly distributed, and the dimple fracture mainly depended on the wall-breaking connection between medium-sized dimples rather than an intermediate media. Under the high heat input of 2.31 kJ/mm, SiO2 was easy to adhere to high melting point Al2O3 oxides to form irregular composite inclusions. Such irregular inclusions do not need to absorb too much energy to form necking. Finally, the integrated effects of microstructure and inclusions resulted in the optimum mechanical properties of deposited metals with a heat input of 1.78 kJ/mm, which was a tensile strength of 793 MPa and an average impact toughness at −40 °C of 56 J. Results of experimental investigation on the mitigation of alkali–silica reaction (ASR) by low-grade calcined clay are presented. Domestic clay with an Al2O3 content equal to 26% and SiO2—58% was used. The calcination temperatures were as follows: 650 °C, 750 °C, 850 °C and 950 °C, which were chosen much more widely than presented in previous studies. Pozzolanity of the raw and calcined clay was determined with the Fratini test. The performance of calcined clay to mitigate ASR was evaluated according to ASTM C1567 using reactive aggregates. A control mortar mixture was prepared with 100% Portland cement (Na2Oeq = 1.12%) as a binder with reactive aggregate, and test mixtures were made with 10% and 20% of calcined clay as a cement replacement. The microstructure of the specimens was observed on the polished sections using scanning electron microscope (SEM) operated in backscattered mode (BSE). The results of expansion of mortar bars with reactive aggregate showed that replacing cement with calcined clay reduced the expansion of the mortar bars. The greater the cement replacement, the better results in terms of ASR mitigation. However, the influence of the calcination temperature was not as clear. The variety of conductive fibers has been constantly enriched in recent years, and it has made rapid development in the fields of electronic textiles, intelligent wearable, and medical care. However, the environmental damage caused by the use of large quantities of synthetic fibers cannot be ignored, and there is little research on conductive fibers in the field of bamboo, a green and sustainable material. In this work, we used the alkaline sodium sulfite method to remove lignin from bamboo, prepared a conductive bamboo fiber bundle by coating a copper film on single bamboo fiber bundles using DC magnetron sputtering, and analyzed its structure and physical properties under different process parameters, finding the most suitable preparation condition that combines cost and performance. The results of the scanning electron microscope show that the coverage of copper film can be improved by increasing the sputtering power and prolonging the sputtering time. The resistivity of the conductive bamboo fiber bundle decreased with the increase of the sputtering power and sputtering time, up to 0.22 Ω·mm; at the same time, the tensile strength of the conductive bamboo fiber bundle continuously decreased to 375.6 MPa. According to the X-ray diffraction results, Cu in the copper film on the surface of the conductive bamboo fiber bundle shows the preferred orientation of (111) the crystal plane, indicating that the prepared Cu film has high crystallinity and good film quality. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results show that Cu in the copper film exists in the form of Cu0 and Cu2+, and most are Cu0. Overall, the development of the conductive bamboo fiber bundle provides a research basis for the development of conductive fibers in a natural renewable direction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The setting time of alkali-activated slag (AAS) binders is extremely short, while traditional retarders of Portland cement may be invalid for AAS. To find an effective retarder with a less negative impact on strength, borax (B), sucrose (S), and citric acid (CA) were selected as potential retarders. The setting time of AAS with different admixtures dosages of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%, and the unconfined compressive strength and beam flexural strength of 3 d, 7 d, and 28 d AAS mortar specimens were tested. The microstructure of AAS with different additives was observed by scanning using an electron microscope (SEM), and the hydration products were analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (DT-TGA) to explain the retarding mechanism of AAS with different additives. The results showed that the incorporation of borax and citric acid could effectively prolong the setting time of AAS more than that of sucrose, and the retarding effect is more and more obvious with the increase in borax and citric acid dosages. However, sucrose and citric acid negatively influence AAS's unconfined compressive strength and flexural stress. The negative effect becomes more evident with the increase in sucrose and citric acid dosages. Borax is the most suitable retarder for AAS among the three selected additives. The paper presents the damage results of thick steel plates subjected to local blast loading using experimental and numerical approaches. Three steel plates with a thickness of 17 mm under the local contact explosion of trinitrotoluene (TNT) explosives were tested, and the damaged parts of the steel plates were scanned using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). ANSYS LS-DYNA software was used to simulate the damage results of the steel plate. By analyzing and comparing the experimental results with the numerical simulation results, the influence law of the TNT acting on the steel plate, the damage mode of the steel plate, the reliability verification of the numerical simulation, and the criterion for judging the damage mode of the steel plate were obtained. Results show that the damage mode of the steel plate changes with the changes in the explosive charge. The diameter of the crater on the surface of the steel plate is mainly related to the diameter of the contact surface between the explosive and the steel plate. The fracture mode of the steel plate in the process of generating cracks is a quasi-cleavage fracture, and the process of generating craters and perforations in the steel plate is a ductile fracture. The damage mode of the steel plates can be divided into three types. The numerical simulation results have minor errors and high reliability, and numerical simulation can be used as an auxiliary tool for experiments. Improving the vacuum degree inside the vacuum device is vital to the performance and lifespan of the vacuum device. The influence of the Ti and ZrCoCe barrier layers on the performance of ZrCoCe getter films, including sorption performance, anti-vibration performance, and binding force between the ZrCoCe getter film and the Ge substrate were investigated. In this study, the Ti and ZrCoCe barrier layers were deposited between the ZrCoCe getter films and Ge substrates. The microtopographies of barrier layers and the ZrCoCe getter film were analyzed using scanning electron microscopes. The sorption performance was evaluated using the constant-pressure method. The surface roughness of the barrier layers and the getter films was analyzed via atomic force microscopy. The binding force was measured using a nanoscratch tester. The anti-vibration performance was examined using a vibration test bench. The characterization results revealed that the Ti barrier layer significantly improved the sorption performance of the ZrCoCe getter film. When the barrier material was changed from ZrCoCe to Ti, the initial sorption speed of the ZrCoCe getter film increased from 141 to 176 cm3·s−1·cm−2, and the sorption quantity increased from 223 to 289 Pa·cm3·cm−2 in 2 h. The binding force between the Ge substrate and the ZrCoCe getter film with the Ti barrier layer was 171 mN, whereas that with the ZrCoCe barrier layer was 154 mN. The results showed that the Ti barrier layer significantly enhanced the sorption performance and binding force between the ZrCoCe getter film and the Ge substrate, which improved the internal vacuum level and the stability of the microelectromechanical system vacuum devices. Due to the unique functional properties of shape memory alloys (SMAs) and current scientific interest in Cu-containing biomaterials, a continuously cast Cu-Al-Ni alloy in the form of rods has been investigated as a potential candidate for biomedical application. Additionally, the fact that Cu- complexes have an antitumour effect served as a cornerstone to develop more efficient drugs based on trace element complexes. In line with that, our study aimed to analyse the basic properties of the Cu-Al-Ni alloy, along with its anticancer properties. The detailed chemical analysis of the Cu-Al-Ni alloy was performed using XRF and SEM/EDX analyses. Furthermore, a microstructural and structure investigation was carried out, combined with hardness measurements using the static Vickers method. Observations have shown that the Cu-Al-Ni microstructure is homogeneous, with the presence of typical martensitic laths. XRD analysis confirmed the presence of two phases, β′ (monoclinic) and γ′ (orthorhombic). The viability of osteosarcoma cells in contact with the Cu-Al-Ni alloy was evaluated using epifluorescence microscopy, while their morphology and attachment pattern were observed and analysed using a high-resolution SEM microscope. Friction stir-spot welding (FSSW) as a solid-state joining process for local welding offers a number of benefits for applications in the automotive, aerospace, and marine industries. In these industries, and from an economic point of view, producing spot welds at a low rotating speed and in a short time is critical for saving energy and enhancing productivity. This investigation helped fill a knowledge gap in the literature about FSSW of 4 mm similar lap joints of AA5052-H32 sheet materials, in which welding takes place over a short time period with a slow tool rotation speed. Consequently, the purpose of this work was to investigate the feasibility of FSSW 2 mm thick AA5052-H32 aluminum alloy sheets to produce 4 mm thick similar spot lap joints at various low dwell times of 1, 2, and 3 s and a constant relatively low tool rotation speed of 500 rpm. The introduced heat input for the friction stir-spot welded (FSSWed) lap joints was calculated based on the applied processing parameters. Joint appearance, cross-section macrostructures, and microstructure features of all the spot welds were evaluated. The mechanical properties (hardness contour maps and maximum tensile shear loads) were also examined. The results show that joining 2 mm sheet thickness AA5052-H32 at a low heat input in defect-free similar lap joints could be successfully achieved. The stir zone (SZ) region became wider as the dwell time increased from 1 to 3 s. The hardness value of the SZ was higher than that attained by the AA5052-H32 base material (BM) for all applied dwell times. Especially at 2 s, the hardness of the SZ was approximately 48% higher than that of the BM. This increase in hardness may be attributed to the high grain refinement of the new dynamically recrystallized grain (4 µm) in the SZ compared to the cold-rolled BM grain size (40 µm). Among the tried FSSW process variables, the dwell time of 2 s at a rotation rate of 500 rpm also produced the maximum tensile shear load of 4330 N. Finally, the locations and features of the fracture surfaces of the FSSWed joints were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the obtained results were discussed. Al-Cu alloy has broad application prospects in the field of aerospace due to its excellent performance. In this paper, deposits with different Cu contents were prepared by the wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) process, and the effects of Cu content on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The microstructure of Al-Cu alloy was investigated by metallography, scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results show that both the number and size of the precipitated θ phases (Al2Cu) in the as-deposited material increase with the increase of Cu content. After the T4 treatment, the solid solution amount of Cu in the matrix showed a trend of first increasing and then remaining stable. When the content of Cu was greater than 5.65%, as the Cu content increased, the number and size of the remaining θ phases both increased. In the peak ageing state, the amount of precipitated θ' phase showed a trend of increasing and then remaining stable. After the T6 treatment, the mechanical properties showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase of the content of Cu. When the Cu content was 5.65%, the deposit achieved the best mechanical properties, and the anisotropy of the mechanical properties disappeared. The tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation reached 538 MPa, 478 MPa, and 10.5%, respectively. When the content of Cu was greater than 5.65%, the anisotropy of mechanical properties was obvious, and the fracture mode of the vertical specimen changed from ductile fracture to brittle fracture. Water pollution caused by the leakage and discharge of pollutants, such as dyes and heavy metal ions, can cause serious damage to the environment and human health. Therefore, it is important to design and develop adsorbent materials that are efficient and multifunctional for the removal of these pollutants. In this work, poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH)/polyaniline (PANI) composite nanofibrous aerogels (NFAs) were fabricated via solution oxidation and blending. The aerogels were characterized by a scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, a contact angle measuring instrument and a universal testing machine. The influences of the introduction of PANI nanorods on the structural properties of aerogels were investigated, and the adsorption performance of aerogels was also studied. The results showed that the introduction of PANI nanorods filled the fibrous network structure, reduced porosity, increased surface hydrophilicity and improved compressive strength. Furthermore, EVOH/PANI composite NFAs possess good adsorption performances for dyes and heavy metal ions: The adsorption capacities of methyl orange and chromium ions (VI) are 73.22 mg/g and 115.54 mg/g, respectively. Pollutants and infectious diseases can spread through air with airborne droplets and aerosols. A respiratory mask can decrease the amount of pollutants we inhale and it can protect us from airborne diseases. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, masks became an everyday item used by a lot of people around the world. As most of them are for a single use, the amount of non-recyclable waste increased dramatically. The plastic from which the masks are made pollutes the environment with various chemicals and microplastic. Here, we investigated the time- and size-dependent filtration efficiency (FE) of aerosols in the range of 25.9 to 685.4 nm of five different natural materials whose FE was enhanced using electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF) fibres. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to determine the morphology and structure of the natural materials as well as the thickness of the PVDF fibres, while the phase of the electrospun fibres was determined by Raman spectroscopy. A thin layer of the electrospun PVDF fibres with the same grammage was sandwiched between two sheets of natural materials, and their FE increased up to 80%. By varying the grammature of the electrospun polymer, we tuned the FE of cotton from 82.6 to 99.9%. Thus, through the optimization of the grammage of the electrospun polymer, the amount of plastic used in the process can be minimized, while achieving sufficiently high FE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to explore the evolution mechanism of freeze–thaw disasters and the role of water in the freezing–thawing cycles of rocks, the macro mechanical indexes and microstructural characteristics of seven different saturation sandstones after certain freeze–thaw cycles were analyzed. Electron microscope scanning, nuclear magnetic resonance, and uniaxial compression tests were employed to study the migration law of water in the rock, the crack growth law, and the damage mechanism during freeze–thaw cycles. The results showed that when the saturation was 85%, the peak load curve of sandstone with different saturation appeared at the minimum point, and the porosity of sandstone reached the maximum. The damage variable increased sharply when the saturation was 75–85%. This proves that 85% saturation is the critical value of sandstone after five freeze–thaw cycles. The water migration freezing model is established, and the migration direction of capillary film water during freezing is micropore → mesopore → macropore. The migration of water is accompanied by the expansion and generation of cracks. Then we study the mechanism and law of crack expansion, and the crack propagation rate is positively related to the theoretical suction. The theoretical suction and theoretical ice pressure increased linearly with the decrease in temperature, which accelerated the crack propagation. The crack propagation rate in decreasing order is Vmacropore > Vmesopore > Vmicropore. The research results can provide a theoretical basis for evaluating the stability of rocks under the action of freeze–thaw cycles in cold regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A persistent rise in the costs of construction materials has led to the need to address this problem in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. This research employed vegetal soft and rigid fibers in a screed mortar to produce a sustainable fabric–cement matrix. Four different vegetal-dried fibers (hemp, flax, miscanthus, and bamboo) with dosages of 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.2, 2, and 4 kg/m3 were used. Laboratory investigations were slump test, bulk density, air occluded, shrinkage, and mechanical strength. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) assessments were performed and analyzed on the natural fibers and the screed formulation. In this study, the viability of duty cycle variation was explored as a potential method to improve the mechanical and surface roughness properties of Ni-Al2O3 nanocoatings through pulse electrodeposition. The areal and surface roughness properties of nanocomposite pulse electrodeposition-coated materials with varying duty cycles from 20% to 100% was studied with the analysis of bearing area curves and power spectral densities. Results demonstrate that with decrease in duty cycle, there was an enhancement in aerial roughness properties from 0.348 to 0.195 µm and surface roughness properties from 0.779 to 0.245 µm. The change in surface roughness was due to grain size variation, resulting from the varying time intervals during pulse coatings. This increase in grain size with the change in duty cycle was confirmed with the scanning electron microscope. In addition, an increase in grain size from 0.32 to 0.92 µm with an increase in duty cycle resulted in a decrease in nanohardness from 4.21 to 3.07 GPa. This work will provide a novel method for obtaining Ni-Al2O3 nanocomposite coatings with improved surface roughness and hardness properties for wider industrial applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Resin-based friction materials (RBFM) are widely used in the fields of automobiles, agriculture machinery and engineering machinery, and they are vital for safe and stable operation. In this paper, polymer ether ketone (PEEK) fibers were added to RBFM to enhance its tribological properties. Specimens were fabricated by wet granulation and hot-pressing. The relationship between intelligent reinforcement PEEK fibers and tribological behaviors was investigated by a JF150F-II constant-speed tester according to GB/T 5763-2008, and the worn surface morphology was observed using an EVO-18 scanning electron microscope. The results showed that PEEK fibers can efficiently enhance the tribological properties of RBFM. A specimen with 6 ωt% PEEK fibers obtained the optimal tribological performance, the fade ratio was −6.2%, which was much higher than that of the specimen without the addition of PEEK fibers, the recovery ratio was 108.59% and the wear rate was the lowest, which was 1.497 × 10−7 cm3/(Nm)−1. The reason for the enhancing tribological performance was that, on the one hand, PEEK fibers have a high strength and modulus which can enhance the specimens at lower temperatures; on the other hand, molten PEEK at high temperatures can also promote the formation of secondary plateaus, which are beneficial for friction. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) is a powerful chemical characterization technique allowing for the distribution of all material components (including light and heavy elements and molecules) to be analyzed in 3D with nanoscale resolution. Furthermore, the sample's surface can be probed over a wide analytical area range (usually between 1 µm2 and 104 µm2) providing insights into local variations in sample composition, as well as giving a general overview of the sample's structure. Finally, as long as the sample's surface is flat and conductive, no additional sample preparation is needed prior to TOF-SIMS measurements. Despite many advantages, TOF-SIMS analysis can be challenging, especially in the case of weakly ionizing elements. Furthermore, mass interference, different component polarity of complex samples, and matrix effect are the main drawbacks of this technique. This implies a strong need for developing new methods, which could help improve TOF-SIMS signal quality and facilitate data interpretation. In this review, we primarily focus on gas-assisted TOF-SIMS, which has proven to have potential for overcoming most of the aforementioned difficulties. In particular, the recently proposed use of XeF2 during sample bombardment with a Ga+ primary ion beam exhibits outstanding properties, which can lead to significant positive secondary ion yield enhancement, separation of mass interference, and inversion of secondary ion charge polarity from negative to positive. The implementation of the presented experimental protocols can be easily achieved by upgrading commonly used focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopes (FIB/SEM) with a high vacuum (HV)-compatible TOF-SIMS detector and a commercial gas injection system (GIS), making it an attractive solution for both academic centers and the industrial sectors. This paper presents the possibilities of applying atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques to the study of the wear of prosthetic biomaterials. In the conducted research, a zirconium oxide sphere was used as a test piece for mashing, which was moved over the surface of selected biomaterials: polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and dental gold alloy (Degulor M). The process was carried out with constant load force in an artificial saliva environment (Mucinox). An atomic force microscope with an active piezoresistive lever was used to measure wear at the nanoscale. The advantage of the proposed technology is the high resolution of observation (less than 0.5 nm) in the three-dimensional (3D) measurements in a working area of 50 × 50 × 10 µm. The results of nano wear measurements in two measurement setups are presented: zirconia sphere (Degulor M and zirconia sphere) and PEEK were examined. To reveal the deterioration process of magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC) in an outdoor, alternating dry–wet service environment, the evolution of the macro- and micro-structures of the surface layer and inner core of MOC samples as well as their mechanical properties and increasing dry–wet cycle numbers were investigated by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), a simultaneous thermal analyser (TG-DSC), a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), and an microelectromechanical electrohydraulic servo pressure testing machine. The results show that as the number of dry–wet cycles increases, the water molecules gradually invade the interior of the samples, causing the hydrolysis of P 5 (5Mg(OH)2·MgCl2·8H2O) and hydration reactions of unreacted active MgO. After three dry–wet cycles, there are obvious cracks on the surface of the MOC samples, and they suffer from warped deformation. The microscopic morphology of the MOC samples changes from a gel state and a short, rod-like shape to a flake shape, which is a relatively loose structure. Meanwhile, the main phase composition of the samples becomes Mg(OH)2, and the Mg(OH)2 contents of the surface layer and inner core of the MOC samples are 54% and 56%, respectively, while the P 5 amounts are 12% and 15%, respectively. The compressive strength of the samples decreases from 93.2 MPa to 8.1 MPa and reduces by 91.3%, and their flexural strength declines from 16.4 MPa to 1.2 MPa. However, their deterioration process is delayed compared with the samples that were dipped in water continuously for 21 days whose compressive strength is 6.5 MPa. This is primarily ascribed to the fact that during the natural drying process, the water in the immersed samples evaporates, the decomposition of P 5 and the hydration reaction of unreacted active MgO both slow down, and the dried Mg(OH)2 may provide the partial mechanical properties, to some extent. In this study, the effect of through-the-thickness delamination plane position on the R-curve behavior of end-notch-flexure (ENF) specimens was investigated using experimental and numerical procedures. From the experimental point of view, plain-woven E-glass/epoxy ENF specimens with two different delamination planes, i.e., [012//012] and [017//07], were manufactured by hand lay-up method. Afterward, fracture tests were conducted on the specimens by aiding ASTM standards. The main three parameters of R-curves, including the initiation and propagation of mode II interlaminar fracture toughness and the fracture process zone length, were analyzed. The experimental results revealed that changing the delamination position in ENF specimen has a negligible effect on the initiation and steady steady-state toughness values of delamination. In the numerical part, the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT) was used in order to analyze the imitation delamination toughness as well as the contribution of another mode on the obtained delamination toughness. The numerical results indicated that by choosing an appropriate value of cohesive parameters, the trilinear cohesive zone model (CZM) is capable of predicting the initiation as well as propagation of the ENF specimens. In order to extend the life of boilers by applying an anti-corrosion coating without the need to dismantle them, it is advisable to find coatings that can be applied using cheaper and portable techniques, such as Twin Wire Arc Spray technology (TWAS). In this study, we compare selected NiCr-based coatings and two uncoated steel substrates (steel 1.7715 and 1.4903). Two coatings, Cr3C2 - 25% NiCr and Hastelloy C-276 are deposited using High velocity oxygen-fuel technology (HVOF) and three coatings, NiCrTi, NiCrMo, and Inconel 625, are deposited using TWAS. In addition to the corrosion weight gain during 50 cycles of loading in an 18% Na2SO4 and 82% Fe2(SO4)3 salt environment at 690 °C evaluated using the gravimetric method, the microstructure and phase composition of the coatings were analyzed on the samples after the exposure in order to compare the properties and gain a deeper understanding of the corrosion kinetics. Coating cross-sections and free-surfaces were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an energy-dispersive (EDX) system. The phase composition was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. No significant differences were observed between the TWAS and HVOF coating methods for the coatings compared. Due to the similar corrosion products found on all coatings, a very effective corrosion protective layer was formed on the surface, forming a barrier between the corrosive environment and the coating regardless of the used deposition technology. Therefore, for industrial use on the inner surface of coal-fired boilers we recommend NiCrTi, NiCrMo, or Inconel coatings prepared with the more cost-effective and portable TWAS technology. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and weight gain tests were performed on carbon fiber/vinyl ester and carbon fiber/bismaleimide composites in 3.5% NaCl solution to study the electrochemical and water absorption behaviors. The microstructure morphology and the flexural property of the composites in the long-term exposure process were analyzed with the scanning electron microscope and four-point bending tests. The results revealed that after long-time immersion (>200 d), the water absorption of the two composites is less than 0.5%. This has little effect on the microstructural integrity, only with slight damage on the fiber/resin interfaces, but results in a significant decrease (about 84%) in the composite flexural property. The variation of the water absorption percentage shows good consistency with that of the resin capacitance (Qc) and is negatively related to the variation of the resin resistance (Rpo) and the low-frequency impedance (|Z|0.01Hz) of the composites. A good linear relationship exists between the variations of phase angles in the middle-frequency range (0.1−10 Hz) and the |Z|0.01Hz. The phase angle at 10 Hz (θ10Hz) may be suggested as a suitable parameter to rapidly evaluate the performance of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites, just like for evaluating the protective performance of polymer-coated metals in the literature. Different collagen barrier membranes come in various sources and crosslinking that may affect barrier function and tissue integration. This study investigated barrier function and tissue integration of the three different collagen membranes (Jason®: porcine pericardium, GENOSS: bovine tendon, and BioMend® Extend: cross-linked bovine tendon) with human gingival fibroblasts. The barrier function and tissue integration properties were determined under confocal microscopy. Morphological characteristics were observed using scanning electron microscopy. Our results showed that all collagen membranes allowed a small number of cells to migrate, and the difference in barrier function ability was not significant. The cross-linked characteristics did not improve barrier ability. The native collagen membrane surfaces allowed evenly scattered proliferation of HGF, while the cross-linked collagen membrane induced patchy proliferation. Statistically significant differences in cell proliferation were found between Jason and BioMend Extend membranes (p = 0.04). Scanning electron microscope showed a compact membrane surface at the top, while the bottom surfaces displayed interwoven collagen fibers, which were denser in the crosslinked collagen membranes. Within the limitations of this study, collagen membranes of different origins and physical properties can adequately prevent the invasion of unwanted cells. Bone is a heterogeneous, hierarchical biocomposite material made of an organic matrix filled with a mineral component, which plays an important role in bone strength. Although the effect of the mineral/matrix ratio on the mechanical properties of bone during aging has been intensively investigated, the relationship between the mechanical properties and the chemical composition of bone with age requires additional research in juvenile individuals. In this study, bone coupons from bovine and ovine animal species were machined from cortical areas of long bones to quantify whether the variation in mechanical properties at different stages of development is related to the change in the composition of bone tissue. An energy-dispersive X-ray detector (EDX) attached to a scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to perform a compositional analysis of the tissue. In addition, nanoindentation analyses were carried out to address how the elastic modulus changed with age. Nonparametric statistical analyses found significant differences (p < 0.05) in Ca content and elastic modulus between species, but no differences were found within each species with development. A multiple linear regression model found that the elastic modulus was significantly related to the decrease in P and C in the samples, to the animal species (larger in bovine), and development, although not linearly. This model also found an interaction between Ca and development that could explain the lack of significance of the relationship between the elastic modulus and development in the univariate models. In this work, 2 mm thick medium-Mn austenitic stainless steel (MMn–SS) plates were joined with austenitic NiCr stainless steel (NiCr–SS) and low-carbon steel (LCS) using the gas tungsten arc welding technique. A precise adjustment of the welding process parameters was conducted to achieve high-quality dissimilar joints of MMn–SS with NiCr–SS and LCS. The microstructural evolution was studied using laser scanning confocal and electron microscopes. Secondary electron imaging and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques were intensively employed to analyze the fine features of the weld structures. The mechanical properties of the joints were evaluated by uniaxial tensile tests and micro-indentation hardness (HIT). The microstructure of the fusion zone (FZ) in the MMn–SS joints exhibited an austenitic matrix with a small fraction of δ-ferrite, ~6%. The tensile strength (TS) of the MMn–SS/NiCr–SS joint is significantly higher than that of the MMn–SS/LCS joint. For instance, the TSs of MMn–SS joints with NiCr–SS and LCS are 610 and 340 MPa, respectively. The tensile properties of MMn–SS/LCS joints are similar to those of BM LCS, since the deformation behavior and shape of the tensile flow curve for that joint are comparable with the flow curve of LCS. The HIT measurements show that the MMn–SS/NiCr–SS joint is significantly stronger than the MMn–SS/LCS joint since the HIT values are 2.18 and 1.85 GPa, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, microstructural evolution and its effects on mechanical properties across the thickness of a 120 mm Ni-Cr-Mo industrial ultra-heavy steel plate were quantitatively investigated by means of optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD). The results show that the martensite fraction is 65% at 10 mm and disappears at 40 mm, while granular bainite appears at 35 mm and climbs up to as high as 32% at 60 mm, with M-A constituents significantly coarsened. The strength drops with the gradual coarsening of the laths as well as decreased martensite fraction from the surface to the centre. The toughness is mainly affected by the block size and the morphology and quantity of M-A constituents. This study established a multivariate function between the microstructure and toughness (50% fibre area transition temperature, FATT50) with careful consideration of the influence of effective grain size (EGS) and M-A constituent size distribution. In the welding process of thick-walled titanium alloys, the selection of the wire type is one of the critical factors affecting the welding quality. In this paper, flux-cored and cable wires were used as filler materials in the welding of thick-walled titanium alloys. The macrostructure, microstructure, texture, and grain size of both welded joints were compared by employing an optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM), and the tensile and impact properties were also evaluated. The comparison result showed that the fusion zone microstructure of both welded joints was dominated by a basketweave structure composed of interwoven acicular α′ martensite, whereas the microstructure of flux-cored wire welded joints was finer, and the degree of anisotropy was low. The strength of both welded joints was higher than that of the base metal, ensuring that fracture occurred in the base metal area during tension. The Charpy impact energy of the flux-cored wire welded joint was 16.7% higher than that of the cable wire welded joint, indicating that the welded joint obtained with the flux-cored wire performed better in the welding process of thick-walled titanium alloys. A coaxial optical fiber interferometer (COFI) is proposed here for ammonia sensing, which comprises two light-carrying single-mode fibers (SMF) fused to a section of no-core fiber (NCF), thus forming an optical interferometer. The outer surface of the COFI is coated with a layer of polyacrylic acid (PAA)/polyaniline (PAni) film. The refractive index (RI) of the sensitive layer varies when PAA/PAni interacts with ammonia, which leads to the resonance wavelength shift. The surface morphology and structure of the PAA/PAni composites were characterized by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. When the sensor was exposed to an ammonia atmosphere of different concentrations at room temperature, the sensing performance of the PAA/PAni composite film was superior to that of a sensitive film formed by single-component PAA or PAni. According to the experimental results, the composite film formed by 5 wt% PAA mixed with 2 wt% PAni shows better performance when used for ammonia sensing. A maximum sensitivity of 9.8 pm/ppm was obtained under the ammonia concentration of 50 ppm. In addition, the sensor shows good performance in response time (100 s) and recovery time (180 s) and has good stability and selectivity.
