A novel bilateral impact-ionization-avalanche-transit-time (BIMPATT) diode based on AlGaN/GaN two-dimensional electron gas is proposed in this article. The BIMPATT is compatible with the available GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) manufacturing process and has a shorter actual electron transit distance than existing HEMT-like IMPATT (HIMPATT) diodes. Compared with the same-sized HIMPATT, the optimum frequency of BIMPATT rises from 320 to 420 GHz and possesses a far wider operating frequency band, especially in the near 0.9 THz range. The maximum DC-RF conversion efficiency rises from 12.9% to 17.6%. The maximum RF power of BIMPATT is 3.18 W/mm, which is similar to 3.12 W/mm of the HIMPATT. Furthermore, our simulation demonstrated that the characteristics of BIMPATT are significantly affected by the length of anode and the thickness of the AlGaN barrier layer. The effects of ohmic contact resistance and background impurities on BIMPATT are also taken into account. Optical eigenstates with a high quality (Q) factor provide substantial advantages for a broad spectrum of optical devices, particularly those demanding strong light–matter interactions. Recently, it has been demonstrated that ultrahigh- Q resonances can be realized in planar photonic structures by merging multiple bound states in the continuum (BICs) in the momentum space. Photonic lattices with thin-film geometry are known to support abundant TE-polarized and TM-polarized BICs. While prior research has explored the merging of TE-polarized BICs, this paper presents analytical and numerical results concerning the merging of TM-polarized BICs in laterally periodic one-dimensional photonic lattices. As the thickness of photonic lattices increases, TM-polarized accidental BICs descend along the dispersion curves and eventually merge at the upper edge of the second stop band. Employing coupled-mode analysis, we calculate the analytical merging thickness at which multiple TM-polarized BICs come together at the second-order Γ point. We confirm the merging of TM-polarized BICs through finite-element method simulations. Our results can be beneficial for achieving ultrahigh- Q resonances through the merging of BICs. This paper describes a three-step process to remediate surface and sub-surface defects on chemo-mechanically polished SiC surfaces. In this process, a CF4-based inductively coupled plasma with reactive ion etch was used to remove material to a depth, which is unaffected by surface and subsurface polishing damage. This produced a planarized but carbon-rich fluorinated surface. This surface was then exposed to a 2 min rapid thermal oxidation in air at 1000 °C to oxidize and volatilize the excess carbon and fluorinated species, respectively. The resulting surface oxide was then stripped using a dilute hydrofluoric acid in water solution. This process, referred to as plasma assisted remediation, reproducibly yielded planarized, stoichiometric surfaces with low levels of carbon and oxygen contamination suitable for subsequent device fabrication. In the supporting studies described here, 4H- and 6H-SiC(0001) surfaces were remediated and characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy at each stage of the process. In this paper, we have studied the effect on the structure and magnetic properties of partial Pd substitution by Gd in Fe–Pd thin films of nominal composition Fe56Pd44−xGdx (x = 1, 3, 5, and 7), deposited onto Si(100) and Si(100)/SiO2 substrates by thermal evaporation. Several techniques contribute to the characterization of their microstructure and magnetic properties, such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, alternating gradient field magnetometry, and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). X-ray diffraction shows that the as-deposited films are either amorphous or contain a disordered FePd phase, depending on the film thickness. The transformation of disordered fcc-FePd into ordered fct-FePd has been induced by a heat treatment at 530 °C for 4 h. The addition of gadolinium leads to a reduction in the coercivity as a consequence of the emergence of soft phases and of the progressive reduction of the fct-FePd phase, which is primarily responsible for the observed maze magnetic domains. The current focus in Autonomous Experimentation (AE) is on developing robust workflows to conduct the AE effectively. This entails the need for well-defined approaches to guide the AE process, including strategies for hyperparameter tuning and high-level human interventions within the workflow loop. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the influence of initial experimental conditions and in-loop interventions on the learning dynamics of Deep Kernel Learning (DKL) within the realm of AE in scanning probe microscopy. We explore the concept of the "seed effect," where the initial experiment setup has a substantial impact on the subsequent learning trajectory. Additionally, we introduce an approach of the seed point interventions in AE allowing the operator to influence the exploration process. Using a dataset from Piezoresponse Force Microscopy on PbTiO3 thin films, we illustrate the impact of the "seed effect" and in-loop seed interventions on the effectiveness of DKL in predicting material properties. The study highlights the importance of initial choices and adaptive interventions in optimizing learning rates and enhancing the efficiency of automated material characterization. In this paper, the high-quality factor mullite microwave dielectric ceramic is employed to introduce in dielectric resonator antenna (DRA). The microwave dielectric properties of ɛr ∼ 5.8, Q × f ∼ 31 240 at 9.66 GHz, and loss tangent tanδ = 1/Q ∼ 2.7 × 10−4 can be obtained by the solid-state reaction method in mullite microwave dielectric ceramic sintered at 1700 °C. On this basis, the resonant modes of the proposed broadband high-gain rectangular DRA are analyzed by using a dielectric waveguide theoretical model and the antenna performance is evaluated by a commercial CST Microwave Studio 2021® software. It has been found that the proposed rectangular DRA can provide a broad bandwidth of 35.9%, a maximum gain of 10 dBi at 3.61 GHz, and a radiation efficiency of 90% in the range of 3.13–4.42 GHz. For demonstration, adequate consistency between the simulation results and the measurement results was achieved. Two-dimensional colloidal crystals assembled from polystyrene nanospheres have emerged as a pivotal foundation for fabricating large-area nano-functional surfaces. These assemblies, defined by their hexagonal close-packed configuration and interlaced with grain boundaries, have garnered significant attention for applications in plasmonic structures, catalysts, photonic crystals, and inverse opals. Nonetheless, achieving consistent large-scale regularity has proven challenging due to unpredictable crystal growth and the introduction of defects. Utilizing acoustic waves excited from the airside, our experiments demonstrate the significant effects of such waves on the self-assembly process, leading to larger crystal domains and reduced defects. In comparison to the extensively studied water-end excitation techniques, our air-end excitation method introduces a novel dynamic in regulating colloidal monolayer crystallization and presents a comprehensive analysis of varying acoustic parameters, frequency, amplitude, and waveform. These findings reveal the potential of airside acoustic annealing in refining the structure of two-dimensional colloidal arrays. To elucidate our experimental observations, we delve into the theoretical underpinnings of particle dynamics, driven by classical hydromechanical constraints like surface tension and gravity. Using a qualitative estimate, we shed light on the resonant excitations and their potential role in optimizing the self-assembly process, especially focusing on resonances pertinent for enhancing cluster enlargements. The microstructure morphology, static magnetic properties, and electromagnetic absorption characteristics of nano FexCoNi alloy particles prepared by chemical liquid deposition with five different Fe content levels are investigated in this paper. The results show that spherical FexCoNi alloy particles with an average particle size of about 100–200 nm and a face-centered cubic crystal structure were obtained. All five samples exhibited soft magnetic behavior, with the saturation magnetization intensity showing an increasing-then-decreasing trend with increasing Fe content, peaking at 141.8 emu/g for Fe content x = 1.0. The dielectric constants (real and imaginary parts) of the prepared alloy particles exhibit significant differences with respect to the variation of Fe content, while the changes in the real and imaginary parts of the magnetic permeability show less pronounced effects with increasing Fe content. As the electromagnetic wave frequency increases, the real parts of the dielectric constants for all composites show minimal fluctuations, and the real parts of the magnetic permeability exhibit a decreasing trend. Moreover, the imaginary parts of the dielectric constants and magnetic permeability show an increasing followed by a decreasing trend as the frequency rises. The material with Fe content x = 1 demonstrated optimal dielectric loss performance and relatively excellent magnetic loss performance, with a sample thickness of 1.9 mm exhibiting the highest reflection loss (RLmax) of −24.2 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.48 GHz. In this paper, the p-GaN gate AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) with varying combinations of gate metal work function and gate geometry are fabricated and investigate the influence of gate leakage current (IGS) on the threshold voltage (VTH) and subthreshold swing (SS). The unique dependence of VTH and SS on gate geometry for different metals is observed, which is different from traditional field-effect transistors. A novel hybrid physics model, consisting of the traditional capacitance divider model and hole injection model, is proposed to explain this phenomenon, and the results exhibit an excellent agreement with the experimental data. The holes traverse the gate/p-GaN Schottky barrier by thermal emission or tunneling and inject into the p-GaN layer, generating the IGS. Expanding upon the traditional capacitance divider model, a portion of the injected holes accumulate at the p-GaN/AlGaN interface and induce the corresponding electrons at the AlGaN/GaN heterojunction, which promotes channel conduction. Hence, the transfer curves display the correlation between IGS and VTH as well as SS. The results show that high IGS can alleviate the instability of VTH caused by the lithographic overlay error, and simultaneously optimize SS. Measurement of coating–substrate interface stiffness can indirectly characterize interface bonding quality. This paper proposes a noval quantitative inversion coating–substrate interface stiffness method based on the multi-resonance frequencies of a constructed ultrasonic echo phase derivative spectrum (UEPDS). The theoretical relationship between UEPDS resonance frequencies and interface stiffness is derived. The detection frequency and high-sensitivity interface stiffness range are optimized based on the sensitivity analyzed. Numerical simulation and experiment are implemented on a 0.48 mm aluminum layer/carbon steel substrate specimen to prove the validity of the proposed ultrasonic method. The simulation results show that the maximal relative error between the inversion and the preset interface stiffnesses is reduced from 23% to 8% compared with the traditional ultrasonic reflection coefficient amplitude spectrum-based (URCAS-based) method. The experiment results indicate that the UEPDS-based inversion interface stiffnesses have the same trend as the nominal contact pressures between the coating–substrate interface. This paper proposes a phase unwrapping method based on ternary Gray code in fringe projection profilometry. This method does not require additional projection images or any prior knowledge. It accurately determines the segmentation thresholds of the ternary Gray code using only the average intensity and intensity modulation calculated from phase-shifting fringes, effectively reducing projection costs and achieving lower codeword errors. Additionally, a segment selection strategy suitable for the ternary Gray code is proposed. By employing the complementary method, three sets of candidate orders with certain codeword shifts can be generated. The wrapped phase is then divided into three segments: upper, middle, and lower segments, and correspondingly matched with the central regions of the three sets of candidate orders, thus enabling the solution of the absolute phase. Through the segment selection strategy, error-prone areas at the edges of orders are effectively avoided, further enhancing the accuracy of measurement results. Compared to the binary Gray code, the ternary complementary Gray code can encode up to 3 m − 1 orders when the number of Gray code patterns is m; when the required number of encoding orders is K, only ⌈ log 3 K ⌉ + 1 Gray code patterns are needed. Its additional value capacity precisely enables it to encode more orders, thereby increasing the frequency of phase-shifting fringes and further enhancing measurement efficiency. Optical metasurfaces can be used to realize various peculiar optical effects, and their mechanisms of the controlling optical phase can be roughly categorized into three types: resonant phase, geometric phase, and propagation phase, also known as the dynamic phase. Multiple mechanisms can be employed to manipulate the phase and amplitude of one metasurface. Therefore, discovering more profound and diverse methods can provide additional degrees of application freedom. This paper proposes a control principle based on electric multipole expansion. We found that for a unit structure formed by dual-metal bars on a metasurface, the radiation of its dipole is equivalent to the interference results of the dual-metal bars. Moreover, the radiation of the quadrupole enables independent control for amplitude and phase. Therefore, we used quadrupole radiation to manipulate the phase and amplitude of the light and even investigated some simple applications, including the realization of focusing light and anomalous refraction. Such a new mechanism of controlling light, combined with other methods, can provide significant insights into achieving challenging goals, like steganography and multifunctional metasurfaces. The introduction of metasurfaces has renewed Snell's law, and the metasurfaces can manipulate sound waves flexibly. In this paper, a coding metasurface with a simple and adjustable coding unit for sound wave transmission is proposed. By changing the orientation of a movable part in a fixed structure, conversion is achieved between two types of units with a phase difference of 180° and high transmittance (>75%). By combining the two types of units, the phases of sound waves can be regulated dynamically. Structural simulations are performed using finite-element software, and the beam splitting of the transmitted sound wave is verified by theoretical analysis and experiments under plane wave incidence in the frequency range of 4.7–5.7 kHz. The time-modulated active medium with linear independent frequency conversion method has been demonstrated to enable wave orientation and reconstruction. However, due to the symmetric scattering field, this technique requires intricate microcircuit designs. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a tunable piezoelectric metasurface based on acoustic black holes (ABHs) to redirect flexural wave reflections. The system can convert an incident flexural wave into a reflected wave of any direction and frequency. This is accomplished through the linear time modulation of the sensing signal, which breaks the constraints of Snell's law inherent in traditional designs and is insensitive to the incident amplitude. The coupling of the ABH damping system with a linear independent frequency conversion mechanism allows for the conversion of an incident flexural wave into a reflected wave in any direction and frequency while also eliminating the influence of second harmonic reflection on the wave field and simplifying the time modulation circuit. In addition, this paper demonstrates arbitrary angle reflection, focusing, beam splitting, and frequency conversion of the incident wave. By improving the flexibility of elastic wave manipulation, this paper introduces a new approach for active control of elastic waves and provides a design method that can be employed in a variety of applications ranging from vibration protection of engineering structures to vibration sensing and evaluation. This paper explores the fundamental structural origins of the 0.7 eV band emission peak, known as D07. The increased attention on these d-band emission lines originates mainly from the correlation between crystal defect and the intensified recombination of less dominant charge carriers. This association holds substantial importance, impacting not just the electronics sector but also raising concerns about reduced efficiency in silicon solar cells. By employing hyperspectral photoluminescence imaging, we pinpointed regions manifesting high D07 peak emissions on a microscopic scale. Subsequently, we conducted a structural investigation utilizing scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction. Following this, we used a focused ion beam to extract areas of interest, allowing for a detailed characterization of the sample using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy at the atomic scale. This approach aids in identifying defects and determining grain boundary orientation. In areas of high D07 band emission, we found Σ 3 { 114 } { 101 } grain boundaries decorated with two-layer fault twin and/or an extrinsic two-layer stacking faults. In addition, density functional theory calculations suggest oxygen impurities as a possibility for substitutional segregation to these types of defects. This paper combines proxy signature, quantum teleportation, and multi-party verification and proposes a multi-party verifiable quantum proxy signature scheme based on quantum teleportation. This scheme has the following characteristics: The authentication method based on the H a s h function can effectively solve the problem of identity identification among members; in order for the proxy signer to be able to verify the correctness of the proxy authorization, a form of proxy signature authorization that concatenates the identity information of the original signer is used. This paper presents a comprehensive exploration of low interface trap density (Dit) in HfO2/Si0.73Ge0.27 metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) capacitors achieved through sulfur passivation and post-deposition annealing (PDA). Our investigation revealed that devices subjected to sulfur passivation and PDA exhibit noteworthy reductions in Dit and hysteresis. Specifically, a low Dit value of 1.2 × 1011 eV−1 cm−2 has been achieved at Ei–0.1 eV for the SiGe MOS device. The observed enhancement in interface properties can be attributed to two key factors: the reduction of the GeOx concentration in the interfacial layer (IL) by sulfur passivation on the SiGe surface and the IL densification with stoichiometric oxygen during PDA. Metasurfaces, due to their outstanding ability to control electromagnetic waves, have great application prospects in the field of wireless communication. This paper provides a comprehensive review of research work based on metasurface in three aspects: wireless power transfer, wireless information transmission, and novel wireless transceiver architectures. In the domain of wireless power transfer, several focusing metasurfaces and systems with unique performance are presented along with a new formula for calculating wireless power transfer. Concerning wireless information transmission section, the direct digital information transmission based on metasurface and the information transmission based on space-time-coding digital metasurface are introduced. Lastly, a simplified wireless transceiver with metasurfaces was introduced. The paper concludes with a discussion on the future directions of metasurfaces in the wireless communication domain. A novel interfacial resistance-free (IRF) bifunctional camouflage (transparent and invisible) device is proposed in this paper. The thermal and electric conductivities of the shell and background are the same to eliminate the interfacial resistance. The IRF bifunctional camouflage device can operate in thermal–electric fields based on the neutral inclusion method. The distribution of isotherm and equipotential lines are studied quantitatively by the simulations. It is confirmed that the IRF bifunctional camouflage device with arbitrary natural materials can effectively achieve not only the invisible function but also the transparent function in thermal–electric fields. Ferroelectricity in hafnium zirconium oxide (Hf1 − xZrxO2) and the factors that impact it have been a popular research topic since its discovery in 2011. Although the general trends are known, the interactions between fabrication parameters and their effect on the ferroelectricity of Hf1 − xZrxO2 require further investigation. In this paper, we present a statistical study and a model that relates Zr concentration (x), film thickness (tf), and annealing temperature (Ta) with the remanent polarization (Pr) in tungsten (W)-capped Hf1 − xZrxO2. This work involved the fabrication and characterization of 36 samples containing multiple sets of metal-ferroelectric-metal capacitors while varying x (0.26, 0.48, and 0.57), tf (10 and 19 nm), and Ta (300, 400, 500, and 600 ° C). In addition to the well-understood effects of x and Ta on the ferroelectricity of Hf1 − xZrxO2, the statistical analysis showed that thicker Hf1 − xZrxO2 films or films with higher x require lower Ta to crystallize and demonstrated that there is no statistical difference between samples annealed to 500 and 600 ° C, thus suggesting that most films fully crystallize with Ta ∼ 500 ° C for 60 s. Our model explains 95% of the variability in the Pr data for the films fabricated, presents the estimates of the phase composition of the film, and provides a starting point for selecting fabrication parameters when a specific Pr is desired. In this paper, a high precision detection method of copper ion (C u 2 + ) concentration based on weak measurement is proposed. The ternary complex formed by C u 2 + with L-tryptophan and phenanthroline reagents has circular dichroism (CD) signal at 605 nm in visible light. The CD signal can be obtained using the intensity contrast as a pointer in the imaginary weak-value amplification scheme. The measured sensitivity and resolution are 0.3417 mrad l/mg and 0.058 mg/l, respectively, which is improved by an order of magnitude compared to the traditional CD measurement method. It is also more accurate and less costly than commonly used C u 2 + detection methods. The C u 2 + concentration detection based on the weak measurement of CD signal detection proposed in this paper not only brings technological breakthroughs in the field of heavy metal ion detection, but also is of great significance in promoting the cross-development of chemistry, biomedicine, and life sciences. Thermally stimulated discharge (TSD) technique is a traditional method in dielectric research, especially for electrets. However, in conventional open-circuit and short-circuit TSD techniques, it is difficult to distinguish the surface charge and body charge of dielectric materials. In particular with the test of polymer electrets, the deformation of the polymer film may take place during the measurement process, which will affect the accuracy of the experiment results. In this paper, a glass-assisting TSD (GA-TSD) technique is proposed to solve the above problems. The feasibility of the experimental technique is verified with the GA-TSD spectra of fluorinated ethylene-propylene copolymer electret films. In addition, their theory analysis is also accomplished. The influences of glass thickness, glass dielectric property, and metallizing on the glass on GA-TSD spectra are investigated. The results prove that the GA-TSD spectra can clearly distinguish the difference between surface charge and body charge according to the current direction. The quartz glass with the lowest dielectric constant is best suitable for the GA-TSD technique. The influence of the glass thickness and metallizing on the glass on GA-TSD spectra is little. The thermal transport and elastic properties of materials are often measured using the laser-induced transient grating spectroscopy (TGS) technique. The analysis of the TGS signal usually involves fitting well-known expressions, derived assuming the limiting cases of opaque or transparent materials, to the measured data. In this paper, the system of thermoelastic equations is analytically solved for an isotropic homogeneous material assuming finite laser penetration depth, which is an important consideration when the penetration depth is on the order of the acoustic wavelength. The need to use such a solution is discussed and compared to the expression for opaque material. The solution is benchmarked against TGS signal measured on single-crystal silicon with {100} surface orientation and is found to significantly improve the accuracy of the calculated thermal diffusivity as compared to using the expression for opaque material. In this paper, a wideband metasurface-loaded (MTS-L) rectenna system is proposed to capture electromagnetic (EM) energy at arbitrary azimuth angles. The radiation patterns of different modes in the original MTS configuration are analyzed using the characteristic mode theory, and potential modes with omnidirectional radiation are screened out. By the arrangement of patches, the roundness performance of the radiation pattern can be ameliorated, and the omnidirectional characteristic is obtained over a wide frequency band. Subsequently, the surface current density of the selected mode is carefully and artificially designed to facilitate probe excitation as well as refrain from introducing complex power-combining networks. A wideband rectifier circuit is designed as the load of the proposed antenna. Eventually, measured results show that it operates from 4.6 to 9.6 GHz with a fractional bandwidth of 70.4%, and the peak system efficiency is 52.2%. The article presents the study of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) for the rhombohedral Laves phase of Pr 2 Rh 3 Ge, which shows a magnetic order below T C = 8.5 K. We have established that the compound exhibits a continuous second-order type of transition which was demonstrated and confirmed by several different techniques, mainly by analyzing universal curves of normalized entropy change as a function of scaled temperature. The observed MCE, in our opinion, is a consequence of an indirect exchange coupling between the magnetic sublattices of the rare earth ions, which, however, does not exclude the potential contribution of sublattice-containing transition metals. In this paper, the procedure to evaluate the MCE from magnetization and specific heat data is described. As a result, important parameters such as the isothermal magnetic entropy change (Δ S M), adiabatic temperature change (Δ T a d ), relative cooling power (RCP), and the temperature averaged entropy change (TEC) were determined. The highest values of − Δ S M , Δ T a d , and RCP for a field change (Δ μ 0 H) of 5 T at T C are 5.96 J/kg K, 3.87 K, and 72.62 J/kg, respectively. These results obtained for Pr 2 Rh 3 Ge seem to be, however, low compared to the values obtained for the rhombohedral Laves phases, belonging to the group of ternary germanides RE 2 Rh 3 Ge containing heavy rare earth metals (RE = Gd, Tb, Ho, and Er). In this paper, a new Stroh formalism for gradient electro-mechanics is derived for the first time, which is both mathematically concise and numerically powerful, applicable to generally coupled anisotropic material systems. Based on this new formalism, the complicated Lamb wave in flexoelectric and piezoelectric plates is investigated. The dispersion equation is obtained by solving the eigenvalue problem along with the unconditionally stable dual-variable and position method. From the obtained dispersion equation, the dispersion curves and mode shapes of the Lamb wave are calculated by the 1D form of the multidimensional moduli ratio convergence method. Two important and interesting features are observed from our analysis: One is the difference in the mode shape symmetry between the piezoelectric and flexoelectric cases, and the other is the size-dependent property of the flexoelectric effect as observed by nondimensionalization. These features are further illustrated by comparing the dispersion curves and wave-mode shapes among the three different material models (purely piezoelectric, purely flexoelectric, and flexoelectric and piezoelectric coupled). The newly derived Stroh formalism offers a robust, concise, and unified approach for dealing with strain gradient electro-mechanic materials with crystal systems of general anisotropy. Electroporation is a complex, iterative, and nonlinear phenomenon often studied through numerical simulations. In recent years, simulations of tissue electroporation have been conducted with static models. However, the results of a static model simulation are restricted to a fixed protocol signature of the pulsed electric field. In this paper, we describe a novel dynamic model of tissue electroporation that also accounts for tissue dispersion and temperature to allow time-domain simulations. We have implemented the biological dispersion of potato tubers and thermal analysis in a commercial finite-element method software. A cell electroporation model was adapted to account for the increase in tissue conductivity. The model yielded 12 parameters divided into three dynamic states of electroporation. The thermal analysis describes the dependence of tissue conductivity on temperature. The model parameters were evaluated using experiments with vegetal tissue (Solanum tuberosum) under electrochemotherapy protocols. The proposed model can accurately predict the conductivity of tissue under electroporation from 100 to 1000 V/cm. A negligible thermal effect was observed at 1000 V/cm, with a temperature increase of 0.89 ° C. Numerical methods for analyzing diffusion phenomena involving strong discontinuities and complicated interfaces are of great scientific and technical importance. In this paper, we extend the existing step-balanced random walk, which overcomes the problem of detailed balance of a random walker in three-dimensional (3D), diffusion-tensor discontinuous systems, to particle density (ρ) discontinuous systems, and introduce volumetric heat capacity C and temperature T by considering ρ as heat density, i.e., ρ = C T , to apply it to thermal problems. Two types of thermophysical simulations are demonstrated: one is steady-state heat flow due to a temperature difference at the end surfaces on a two-phase slab model unit cell with periodic boundary conditions; the other is the time variation of temperature distribution due to heat diffusion from a point heat source in a repeated two-phase slab model with no periodic boundary conditions. We see the correct behavior of heat and temperature expected in 3D discontinuous systems composed of two phases with anisotropic thermal conductivity. Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) can be employed to characterize the passivation quality of semiconducting material interfaces. The interface electric field (EDC) related to the existing charges at and near the interface, including the fixed oxide charges Qox, gives rise to the electric field induced second harmonic phenomenon. In this paper, we calibrate the SHG response for EDC measurement, using Al2O3/SiO2/Si(100) samples with different Qox. To perform this calibration, SHG and capacitance-voltage measurements (to access the electrical field of the samples) were made. Spin–orbit torque (SOT) can provide efficient electrical manipulation of magnetism via applying electrical current to breaking the symmetry of damping-like torque. In the heterojunction of heavy and ferromagnetic metal, Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI) is one of the key ingredients for stabilizing chiral spin structures, like chiral domain walls. Meanwhile, materials with larger charge-spin conversion rates are also highly expected for the efficient SOT. Crossed-Field Vacuum Electron Devices are ubiquitous in the High-Power Microwave field in either an oscillator/source or amplifier variant. A typical configuration consists of a magnetically insulated laminar electron flow in an anode–cathode gap with crossed electric (∝ V , voltage) and magnetic (B-) fields and a series of open resonant cavities/vanes located on the anode block that serve as a slow-wave structure (SWS). The SWS slows the phase velocity of the electromagnetic signal down so that the wave becomes synchronous with a layer of the electron flow but is often neglected when calculating the Hull magnetic field necessary to insulate the electrons. In particular, the guiding design equation for the critical cutoff B-field assumes a smooth anode wall. In this paper, we show that such an assumption severely narrows the operating regime in B–V space and that upon inclusion of a revised Hull Cutoff condition taking into account the SWS, operation at lower B and higher V is possible. To develop special insulating paper is of great significance to promote the service life of transformers. Using molecular simulation to guide the development of special insulating paper can greatly reduce the trial-and-error rate and waste of resources in traditional experiments. The effect of different types of polysilsesquioxane (POSS) on cellulose insulating paper was investigated by using molecular simulation. This paper investigated the thermal stability and mechanical properties and electrical characteristics of caged POSS, semi-caged POSS, and ladder-like POSS doped cellulose insulating paper. The results show that POSS with all types can enhance the performance of cellulose insulating paper, and ladder-like POSS possess the best modification effect. The glass transition temperature was increased by 58 K, and the bulk modulus, shear modulus, and elastic modulus of cellulose insulating paper doped with ladder-like POSS can improve up to 27.07%, 45.67%, and 41.28%, respectively. Meanwhile, the dielectric properties of ladder-like POSS modified insulating paper are also significantly improved. The findings of this paper propose a method for the preparation of ladder-like POSS modified insulating paper, which provides theoretical guidance for the experimental preparation of special insulating paper. Ion-induced electron emission (IIEE) is an important process whereby ions impinging on a material surface lead to net emission of electrons into the vacuum. While relevant for multiple applications, IIEE is a critical process of electric thruster (ET) operation and testing for space propulsion, and, as such, it must be carefully quantified for safe and reliable ET performance. IIEE is a complex physical phenomenon, which involves a number of ion-material and ion-electron processes, and is a complex function of ion mass, energy, and angle, as well as host material properties, such as mass and electronic structure. In this paper, we develop a discrete model of kinetic IIEE to gain a more accurate picture of the electric thruster chamber and facility material degradation processes. The model is based on three main developments: (i) the use of modern electronic and nuclear stopping databases, (ii) the use of the stopping and range of ions in matter to track all ion and recoil trajectories inside the target material, and (iii) the use of a scattering Monte Carlo approach to track the trajectories of all mobilized electrons from the point of first energy transfer until full thermalization or escape. This represents a substantial advantage in terms of physical accuracy over existing semi-analytical models commonly used to calculate kinetic IIEE. We apply the model to Ar, Kr, and Xe irradiation of W and Fe surfaces and calculate excitation spectra as a function of ion depth, energy, and angle of incidence. We also obtain minimum threshold ion energies for net nonzero yield for each ion species in both Fe and W and calculate full IIEE yields as a function of ion energy and incidence angle. Inspired by the emerging field of twistronics, moiré photonic structures have attracted great interest. In this paper, we introduce the concept of the moiré Kagome lattice (MKL), which arises from the overlapping of a Kagome lattice at a commensurable angle of 38.211°. MKL exhibits a significantly broader main photonic bandgap (PBG) when compared to the traditional Kagome lattice. Through numerical simulations, we delved into the adjustable properties of the PBG of MKL by varying lattice parameters, including filling factors and materials. Meanwhile, we also observed the presence of photonic flatbands within the MKL structure. Specifically, the emergence of a super flat isolated flatband aids in achieving single-mode omnidirectional lasers and enhancing the omnidirectional electromagnetic interaction of materials, thereby expanding the applications of moiré photonic crystals. This paper introduces a versatile design method for reconfigurable metasurfaces based on the Pancharatnam–Berry phase theory. Unlike traditional reconfigurable metasurfaces that require designing independent surfaces for specific applications, leading to a significant time investment for designers to learn and create, this study proposes a foundational, invariant metasurface. By selectively metallizing holes or inserting metal cylinders, it achieves nine available functionalities. Regardless of the chosen operating function, the metasurface demonstrates high efficiency at 8.2 GHz, with amplitude loss less than 1 dB. Additionally, when operating in phase modulation mode, the design provides a 360 ° phase adjustment range and a 30 ° phase step. A prototype containing 31 × 31 units (425.6 × 425.6 mm 2) has been fabricated and tested under function 7 (TM and RHCP transmission phase modulation). Quantum random number generators (QRNGs) produce random numbers based on the intrinsic probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics, making them true random number generators. In this paper, we design and fabricate an embedded QRNG that produces random numbers based on fluctuations of spontaneous emission and absorption in a light-emitting diode. To achieve a robust and reliable QRNG, we compare some usual post-processing methods and select the finite impulse response method for a real-time device. Multi-scale predictive models for the shock sensitivity of energetic materials connect energy localization ("hotspots") in the microstructure to macro-scale detonation phenomena. Calculations of hotspot ignition and growth rely on models for chemical reaction rates expressed in Arrhenius forms; these chemical kinetic models, therefore, are foundational to the construction of physics-based, simulation-derived meso-informed closure (reactive burn) models. However, even for commonly used energetic materials (e.g., HMX in this paper) there are a wide variety of reaction rate models available. These available reaction rate models produce reaction time scales that vary by several orders of magnitude. From a multi-scale modeling standpoint, it is important to determine which model best represents the reactive response of the material. In this paper, we examine three global Arrhenius-form rate models that span the range of reaction time scales, namely, the Tarver 3-equation, the Henson 1-equation, and the Menikoff 1-equation models. They are employed in a meso-informed ignition and growth model which allows for connecting meso-scale hotspot dynamics to macro-scale shock-to-detonation transition. The ability of the three reaction models to reproduce experimentally observed sensitivity is assessed by comparing the predicted criticality envelope (Walker–Wasley curve) with experimental data for pressed HMX Class V microstructures. In this paper, an ultra-thin metamaterial absorber (UMA) in the S-band is designed. The overall structure adopts a three-layer design. The top layer is a magnetic material, and the middle layer of the UMA is composed of a centrally symmetrical open square ring (four edges are opened) and a circular pattern placed at the center, which is etched on the FR4 dielectric substrate by printed circuit board technology. The absorptivity of the absorber is more than 90% in 1.73–4.04 GHz under normal incidence, and the fractional bandwidth is 80.1%. The total thickness of the absorber is about 3.4 mm, corresponding to 0.02 λ L at the lowest operating frequency. Moreover, it also has good polarization insensitivity and wide-angle incident characteristics. The absorption mechanism of the UMA is analyzed from the aspects of power loss density and surface current. Finally, a sample was fabricated and measured. This paper utilizes a coupled chemomechanical model that integrates chemical reactions, diffusion, and mechanical deformation to describe the high-temperature interfacial reactions and stress evolution within an enamel coating/Ni-based super-alloy system. Through finite element simulation, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of multiple reactions and processes at the interface. Experimental characterization of the concentration distribution of various elements is employed to verify the accuracy of the proposed chemomechanical model. Additionally, the simulation reveals that the interface region experiences compressive circumferential stress, which can potentially lead to interfacial failure due to buckling. On the other hand, the enamel coating undergoes tensile circumferential stress, resulting in the formation of vertical surface cracks. These findings hold practical implications for the development of advanced coatings with enhanced durability and performance. In this paper, a wideband polarization reconfigurable omnidirectional antenna (PROA) based on a single-substrate active metasurface is proposed. By controlling the states of the PIN diodes, the antenna can selectively radiate an omnidirectional linearly polarized wave and an omnidirectional circularly polarized wave. The reflection coefficient, axial ratio (AR), radiation pattern, and gain of the proposed antenna have been analyzed from the perspective of simulation and measurement. The measured results show that the PROA has a wide overlapped bandwidth from 2.87 to 3.67 GHz (relative bandwidth 24.46%). To the authors' best knowledge, this is the first reported wideband PROA based on a single-substrate reconfigurable polarization converter. This study not only offers a novel approach to design PROAs, but also greatly reduces the design complexity of the feed source compared with the traditional design method of PROAs. Acoustic metamaterial concepts, such as metalenses and hyperlenses, have been studied with much interest for super-resolution imaging. However, the physics of wave scattering by sub-wavelength sized defects is still not very well understood. Here, we present studies on acoustic wave interactions with circular defects of sizes varying from over a wavelength to sub-wavelength scale. Near- and far-field scattering patterns of single circular defects are presented, connecting them to analytical frameworks. Scattering field signatures produced by two identical circular defects of different sizes placed side by side are then discussed. The separation distance between the defects is among the parameters varied to understand the effects of geometric features in successful imaging. Experimental results are presented to support the predictions reported in the paper. The insights have important implications for sub-wavelength imaging using acoustic metamaterials. When a cubic lattice is confined by a surface layer, the effective thermoelastic properties can be tailored by the prestress produced by the surface. The thermal expansion coefficient, temperature derivative of elasticity, and the equation of state (EOS) of the solid depend on the potential of each bond and the lattice structure, which can be predicted by the recently developed singum model. This paper first uses a granular lattice confined by a spherical shell to demonstrate singum modeling of the thermoelastic behavior of the cubic lattices and then extends it to atomic crystal lattices by considering the surface tension and long-range interactions. Given the elasticity and the EOS of a cubic crystal, the interatomic potential can be inversely derived. As the bond length changes with thermal expansion and pressure, the singum model predicts the temperature- and pressure-dependent elasticity. Using the orientational average, isotropic elastic constants can be obtained for polycrystals. The case study of copper (Cu) demonstrates the versatility of the model for different cubic lattices and predicts the experimental results of pressure- and temperature-dependent elasticity. The singum model is general for different lattice types and EOS forms and provides clear physical and mechanical meanings to correlate the interatomic potential, EOS, and elasticity in the closed-form formulation, which is very useful in engineering design and analysis of metal structural members in fire, geothermal, and space applications without the needs of large-scale numerical simulations. We use a 2.5D hybrid simulation to study the breathing mode (BM) dynamics in Hall thrusters (HTs). This involves a 1D Euler fluid simulation for neutral dynamics in the axial direction, coupled with a 2D axial–azimuthal Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulation for charged species. The simulation also includes an out-of-plane virtual dimension for wall losses. This setup allows us to replicate the BM's macroscopic features observed in experiments. A comprehensive analysis of plasma parameters in BM's phases divides it into two growth and two decay sub-phases. Examining 1D axial profiles of electron temperature, gas and plasma densities, and particle creation rate shows that an increase in electron temperature alone cannot sustain ionization. Ionization seems to be influenced by the spatial correlation between electron and gas densities and the ionization rate coefficient. Investigating ion back-flow reveals its impact on modulating neutral flux entering the ionization region. The hybrid simulation's outcomes let us assess the usual 0D predator–prey model's validity and identify its limitations. The ionization and ion convection term approximations hold, but the gas convective term approximation does not. Introducing an alternative gas convective term approximation involving constant density ejection from the ionization region constructs an unstable BM model consistent with simulation results. In addition, this paper explores how varying the imposed voltage and mass flow rate impacts the BM. The BM frequency increases with imposed voltage, aligning with theoretical predictions. Fractures in body-centered-cubic metals and alloys below the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature are brittle. This is theoretically explained by the notion that the critical stress intensity factor of a given crack front for brittle fracture is smaller than that for plastic deformation; hence, brittle fracture is selected over plastic deformation. Although this view is true from a macroscopic perspective, such a fracture is always accompanied by small-scale plastic deformation near the crack tip, that is, crack tip plasticity. This paper investigates the origin of this plasticity using atomistic modeling with the machine learning interatomic potential of α -Fe. Some plastic modes are activated by rapid crack propagation, whereas no plasticity is activated when the crack tips are gradually fractured. Two-dimensional (2D) piezoelectric nanomaterials have widely been studied recently due to their promise for various applications in technology. Investigation of vertical piezoelectricity will contribute to a deeper understanding of the intrinsic mechanism of piezoelectric effects in the 2D structures. In this paper, we report a first-principle study for the structural, electronic, piezoelectric, and transport properties of new-designed Janus WSi Z 3 H (Z = N, P, and As) monolayers. The structural stability of WSi Z 3 H is theoretically confirmed based on the energetic, phonon dispersion, and also elastic analyses. At the ground state, while WSiN 3 H is an indirect semiconductor, both WSiP 3 H and WSiAs 3 H are predicted to be direct semiconductors with smaller bandgaps. When the spin-orbit coupling effects are taken into account, a large valley spin splitting is observed at the K point of WSi Z 3 H materials. Interestingly, a giant Rashba spin splitting is found in WSiP 3 H and WSiAs 3 H with Rashba constant α R up to 770.91 meV Å. Additionally, our first-principles study indicates that Janus WSi Z 3 H monolayers are piezoelectric semiconductors with high out-of-plane piezoelectric coefficient | d 31 | , up to 0.15 pm/V, due to the broken mirror symmetry. Besides, with high electron mobilities and also possessing direct band gaps, WSiP 3 H and WSiAs 3 H monolayers are favorable for applications in optoelectronics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We deduce equations to calculate coupling coefficients of diamond micro-ring resonators. The equations can be used universally at any wavelength but not limited to the transmission peaks/valleys, and can be adapted with triangular cross-sections and tapered waveguides. Consequently, we build three models in accordance to different diamond processing technologies. These models deal with ring resonators with either rectangular cross sections, or triangular cross sections, or with tapered bus for triangular cross sections. The calculated coupling coefficients can be well fitted by exponential decay functions of gap d. Due to geometrical limitations, triangular-cross-sectional diamond resonators are shown to have much smaller (factor 20) coupling coefficients than those of rectangular-cross-sectional resonators. A tapered bus is shown to be beneficial to increase the coupling coefficient. Besides the calculation of coupling coefficients, the method presented in the paper can also be used to calculate the bending loss of micro-ring resonators, as a complement to the existing methods. With the in-depth study of open optical systems, the topological phases of non-Hermitian metasurfaces have attracted increasing attention due to their topological protection properties. Here, in this paper, a tunable non-Hermitian metasurface with bidirectional anisotropism is proposed. By incorporating the phase change material vanadium dioxide (VO2) into the metasurface, two topological exceptional points (EPs) appear in the system by adjusting the conductivity of VO2 and chiral responses appear at both EPs. This research shows that the conductivity significantly affects the reflection of the metasurface, and the zero-reflection points correspond to the EPs of the non-Hermitian system. Further results prove that circling around EPs leads to a 2π phase change, which is topologically protected and independent of the encirclement path. Therefore, this study employs an active control approach to realize two topological EPs. Through comprehensive investigations into the topological properties and chiral performance at EPs, we elucidate the mechanism for the chirality generation in non-Hermitian metasurfaces, which offers feasible solutions for the development of chiral topological devices and light transmission and modulation in future applications. This paper investigates a systematic theoretical study of the lattice dynamical, electronic, and thermoelectric transport properties of PbTe, which is subjected to hydrostatic pressure and uniaxial stress along the [100], [110], and [111] directions, by using first-principles calculations. Our study demonstrates that stress is an effective tool for regulating thermoelectric properties in materials, and different types of stress affect these properties through distinct mechanisms. Specifically, under hydrostatic pressure and uniaxial stress along the [100] direction, PbTe exhibits similar electronic behavior but different lattice dynamical properties. Bandgap closure and reopening are observed under hydrostatic pressure and uniaxial stress along the [100] direction, whereas only the gap opposite trends are seen for uniaxial stress along the [110] and [111] directions. Under uniaxial stress along the [100] direction, phonon lifetimes decrease, leading to low thermal conductivity. In contrast, under hydrostatic pressure and uniaxial stress in the [110] and [111] directions, phonon lifetimes are enhanced due to a weakening of the anharmonic effect. In the present paper, we apply a blind fitting algorithm to model two-dimensional energy-incidence angle maps of soft x-ray resonant reflectivity measured in nanoscale epitaxial multilayers of multiferroic ε-Fe2O3 grown by pulsed laser deposition. The possibility of fitting the spectral shape of the complex refraction index across the Fe L3 absorption edge without having an initial guess about the optical constants has been demonstrated. The spectral shape fitting of the real (f1) and imaginary (f2) parts of the atomic scattering factor has been carried out by using a specially designed software utilizing OpenCL fast calculations on graphical processing units. The Kramers-Kronig relations between f1 and f2 are automatically taken into account by the fitting algorithm. A reasonable agreement between blindly generated and reference scattering factor spectra derived independently from an x-ray absorption spectroscopy experiment has been demonstrated. The blind fitting has been compared with the alternative refinement routines, in which small free variations of the reference spectral shapes (or no variations at all) have been allowed. The presented approach to the resonant x-ray reflectometry modeling makes it unnecessary to acquire the optical constant spectral shapes in advance and, thus, is especially helpful when such spectra cannot be physically measured, e.g., for a buried layer of a multilayer system.
