The article offers a report about the Literacy Initiative for Empowerment program by UNESCO. The program supports national literacy policies and program that intends to enable women and girls, in particular in rural areas. Through the program, UNESCO facilitates a process of collaborative action designed to equipped national and international commitments to literacy, to strengthen capacities for the articulation of sustainable policies and program delivery, and to improve countries' innovative initiatives and practices in providing literacy learning opportunities.

The article focuses on the importance of supporting teacher development for the promotion of quality education of refugee in Northern Ethiopia. The right of refugee and internally displaced children for education is enshrined in human rights laws and conventions. Education plays an important role in providing protection to children whose lives are affected by war, violence, displacement, and the general disruption of normal life. On the other hand, the Healing Classroom Initiative of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a global action research project focuses on improving teacher support and development in crisis situation.

The article focuses on the transformation of school supervision into a tool for quality improvement of education in Africa. Supervision existed to ensure that all education staff respected the same rules and regulations and followed a similar program. Traditionally, the core role of supervisors is to control the teachers and oversee their performance in the classroom. According to the author, controlling the functioning of schools and allowing for regular exchanges between schools could be a powerful tool for quality improvement. Due to scare resources and educational strategies, supervision services are faced with a genuine strategic challenge.

The article discusses the importance of parental and community participation for the improvement of educational quality in Africa. Due to poor educational quality in the country, education sector shifts to other quality literature towards thinking about how to better measure outputs to obtain quality improvements. Many believe that parental and community involvement in schools has been posited as affecting quality in a number of ways such as providing an oversight school budgeting and teacher attendance and performance and managing student attendance and homework. The new strategies in education require new models of education development planning and practices.

The past two decades have witnessed three important international trends: an increase in the number of democratic states; economic globalization; and educational reforms in light of the challenges of the new millennium. A great deal of research has addressed educational change in relation to either globalization or democratization, but little has been said about the complex interactions among all three processes. In view of recent educational reforms in Hong Kong and Taiwan, the present contribution examines the local nature of education policy in a globalized age. It challenges those globalization theories which minimize the role of the state and exaggerate the power of globalization over local factors. In particular, it explores how the governments of these two Chinese societies have employed democratization to generate and legitimate reform proposals and have used economic globalization to justify educational reforms. The study concludes by discussing the complex interrelations of these processes, including tensions between global and local concerns in educational reform. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Indonesia has seen several recent attempts to devolve control over the curriculum to the local level. Rather than catalogue all of the problems encountered in the course of their implementation, the present contribution focuses on a single reform, the Local Content Curriculum (LCC). Analysis of local responses to this reform provides insights into the state's influence on the actions and attitudes of Indonesian educators not previously detailed in research on educational decentralisation. These insights into the implementation of the LCC expand the understanding of the tangible effects of educational reform on actual learning institutions and pupils as well as inform about the central government's real ability to effect change in schools. The study also shows how the lethargy of local actors is bound to deeply engrained views about the role of Indonesian teachers in school, in the society and in the state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Peace education has been recognized as an important aspect of social education for the past three decades. The critical literature as well as official documents, however, have given little attention to its philosophical foundations. This essay explores these foundations in the ethics of (1) virtue, (2) consequentialism, (3) aesthetics, (4) conservative politics and (5) care. Each of these alone composes a significant element of peace education, although ultimately its solid basis can only be established through an integrative approach encouraging a culture of peace.
