The article focuses on the informal session for French speaking participants in the formal programme of an International Council of nurses (ICN) Congress. Papers, indicating fruitful topics and appropriate methods for research in nursing and outlining steps in establishing a research programme were given by Mlle Nicole. The session for English speaking participants followed a similar pattern to the French session but there was an expert panel instead of a second speaker. The participants gave every sign of enjoying the session and finding it profitable.

The article focuses on the increase in the need for patient health education and in the professional nurse's opportunities for such a role. The purpose of the paper is to examine the existing problems in patient education provided by the professional nurse and to offer some possibilities for clarifying the nurse's role in order to ensure progress in this area. The theme of the Annual Professional Conference of the Royal College of Nursing was 'Standards of Nursing Care', when the Report of the World Health Organization Fifth Expert Committee on Nursing was used as a basis for the discussions. Papers were presented in the context of basic and post-basic nursing education, hospital and domiciliary nursing and nursing research. Miss H.M. Simpsom, B.A., S.R.N., gave a résumé of the Report of the WHO Committee, of which she was a member. Mis B.I.R. Dodwell discussed four major problems which militate against the achievement of good nursing standards at the present time. The curriculum was named first, together with the conflict of trying to provide the right kind of nurse for the 1970s, while giving consideration to present needs. Next, came the candidates and their recruitment. It was suggested that recruitment of student nurses should be separated from recruitment for service. Third, the control of nursing education and the fact that the claims of the nursing service get constant priority over education, which was deplored. Finally, there is the problem of too few teachers of nursing. On domiciliary nursing, Miss L. Hockey felt it to be a necessary contribution of the profession to the community it serves to make it possible for the aged, the sick and the handicapped to be cared for in their own homes, if they so desired. Miss K.J.W. Wilson, B.Sc., outlined the organization of the Department Nursing Studies of Edinburgh University, and the courses available for undergraduates and for registered nurses. She also spoke of research as a major responsibility of a University Department and how this was carried out. Finally, Miss Simpson spoke of the present situation in nursing research in the United Kingdom in relation to the framework suggestion in the World Health Organization Report. In recent years economists have again been emphasizing the importance of human capital formation in the development process. The cure most commonly prescribed for skill shortages has been increased training capacity. While expansion may be necessary, it is an expensive and intrinsically long-term solution. Moreover, it is not without its perils. This article briefly describes health services situation in Singapore, analyses the wastage patterns of qualified and student nurses, and presents suggestions for reducing this wastage.

In developing communities where needs may vary greatly the basic responsibility of the nurse is intensified and becomes more urgent, because any nation can only move forward on the health and well being of its people. The article reports that a seminar on nursing research was held in Denmark in December 1966, on the initiative of the Northern Nurses Federation. The national nurses associations of the five northern countries assisted the seminar further by paying all expenses for their national participants. The idea of holding such a regional seminar dates back to the time when nurses from the northern countries participated in the seminars organized by the International Council of Nurses and the plan to have a regional seminar was developed through several steps.

Disease can be the result of a faulty environment. During the period of Japanese occupation from 1896 to 1945, there were very limited arid inadequate health facilities and educational institutions for preparing nursing personnel in Taiwan. The second class has graduated from the Department of Nursing, Tel-Aviv University, Tel-Aviv, Israel. Graduation ceremonies for the 21 nurses took place in March 1973. Of the group, two are taking their master's degree in clinical nursing in the U.S., another is doing a master's degree in education and a fourth nurse a master of public health in Israel. All of the 19 in Israel are working full or part-time in responsible positions. Among them Hassia Gur-Arieh, chief nurse in the Ministry of Health and a former member of ICN's board of directors.

It remains to be seen whether the plight of the elderly simply a slogan of pensioner polemics or is it a reflection of social realities. It is still unclear whether the present provisions of the medical, nursing and social services match the needs of the eight and a half million people in Great Britain of retirement age. Their numbers have doubled over the last 50 years from 8% to 16% of the population. The elderly now occupy 44 % of both general medical and mental illness beds in hospitals. In the Great Britain special residential accommodation and home nursing visits have both risen by a third in the last 10 years.
