Abstract

The article reports that achievement of goals in nursing, as in outer space, is dependent on the prior accumulation of scientific knowledge through studies and research. The beginning of research in nursing is obscure. Possibly it is as old as nursing itself and nursing research may have preceded that of the other health occupations, even medicine and pharmacy. The ambitious nurses left bedside nursing with its low social status for the prestige of administration and teaching posts, and as a result most intelligent inquiry was restricted to the areas of administration and teaching.
