INFORMATION services ,DIGITIZATION of library materials ,WEB search engines ,WEBSITES - Abstract
This paper presents an update on the information industry as of February 2005. The biggest news that rocked the information world in late December 2004 and January 2005 was the digitization project of Google with libraries. Some media outlets and even several of the research libraries involved in the project, called the potential impact revolutionary. Yahoo! has enhanced Yahoo! Maps to include real-time traffic information for 70 U.S. cities. Data is gathered from various government agencies responsible for traffic. A small start-up company called blinkx introduced what it claims is the first search engine for television content. GuruNet, which formerly offered a subscription reference product, has launched a new free site called Answers.com that includes information on more than one million topics drawing from a database of more than 100 reference sources. Elsevier announced that its free science-specific search engine, Scirus, has introduced a new version of its downloadable toolbar. The toolbar includes new functionalities for finding scientific information on the web. Microsoft announced the beta release of its own enhanced desktop search product as part of the MSN Toolbar Suite. Users can search a wide variety of local desktop content and web content, but the results are not integrated.

This article comments on the press releases issued by several organizations in the U.S. Press release is defined as a paper or electronic document submitted to the media with the intent of gaining media coverage. One of the basic rule in news writing is never to bury the lead. A classic news story is written in an inverted pyramid style, which means that the key points are at the top, followed by information of decreasing significance. One press release that the author found as annoying presented findings from a study but offered no link to the report or source information.

INTERNET ,WORLD Wide Web ,WEBSITES ,COMPUTER users ,ELECTRONIC information resources - Abstract
This article focuses on the things that online users hate about Web sites and the Internet. Sree Sreenivasan, a journalism professor at Columbia University, wrote a column titled Stuff I Hate, for PoynterOnline in 2005. He wrote a similar piece in 2003. In each, he asked readers to tell him what they hated online. Responses to his most recent article indicate that things haven't really improved. For example, there are still plenty of Web sites that don't include easy-to-find contact information. One person complained about going to a newspaper Web page and not being able to figure out where the paper is located. A medical writer said he was frustrated by Web stories without a date because he can't tell how fresh or how stale the information is. Other peeves included slow-loading home pages, often due to promiscuous use of music or graphics; pages that mess with a user's browser; Web sites that require downloading special software in order to access content; sites that present a seizure-inducing Flash introductory page; and links that start the download of unexpectedly large portable document format files without warning.

WEB portals ,ELECTRONIC information resources ,WEBSITES ,INTERNET ,INFORMATION resources - Abstract
This article provides information on the Web portal, DocuTicker. In 2004, Gary Price planned to spin off a new Weblog from his popular ResourceShelf. This one would be devoted, purely and simply, to identifying new reports from government agencies, trade associations, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, and other organizations that releases research studies, and position papers. Since then, DocuTicker has taken on a life of its own. DocuTicker is never lacking for sustenance. Substance, on the other hand, is a separate issue. Substance, like beauty, is definitely in the eye of the beholder. This can be heard from journalists who have gotten story ideas from things they have seen on DocuTicker. From people who latch onto an interesting item and wonder where they can find similar material. And also from folks who feel that there are too much liberal stuff or too much conservative stuff posted at the site. DocuTicker does not have an ideological slant. Basically, they post anything that someone might want to read because the topic is current, it contains potentially useful statistics, and a helpful bibliography is included. However, DocuTicker does not include commentary from its contributors Internet.

ARCHIVES ,WEBSITES ,ONLINE databases - Abstract
This article reports that Readex has announced the creation of a Web-based Archive of Americana as of December 2004. It will feature fully text-searchable facsimile images. This resource, comprising four major primary source collections, provides online access to printed record in the U.S. The cornerstone of the Archive of Americana is Early American Imprints, Series I: Evans, based on Charles Evans' American Bibliography. This collection contains nearly every book, pamphlet, and broadside published in the U.S. from 1639 to 1800. Early American Imprints, Series II: Shaw-Shoemaker continues the Evans bibliography and includes books, pamphlets, and broadsides published in the U.S. between 1801 and 1819. Complementing Early American Imprints is Early American Newspapers (1690-1876), based on Charles Brigham's History and Bibliography of American Newspapers. The largest collection of its kind, Early American Newspapers presents cover-to-cover reproductions of rare newspapers and issues. The fourth collection in the Readex Archive of Americana is the U.S. Congressional Serial Set (1817-1980) with American State Papers (1789-1838). Revealing events as they unfolded and decisions as they were made, these volumes of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives also include color maps, illustrations, and non-congressional publications.

INFORMATION services ,TSUNAMIS ,WEBSITES ,DISASTER relief ,ACCESS to information ,LEGISLATION ,CONFERENCES & conventions - Abstract
This paper presents an update on the information industry as of February 2005.. Although normally a time for reflecting on the past year and making resolutions for the next year, this new year, like no other, is dominated by one catastrophic event: the devastation around the coast of the Indian Ocean caused by the tsunamis generated by the December 26, 2004 earthquake. Post-disaster blogs and other news sources proliferate, but no information channel was capable of preparing communities for the approaching calamity. In the aftermath, however, online services and information providers are finding new ways to help. Google quickly changed a strict policy and added a link to relief aid sources on its otherwise minimalist search page. Perhaps one of the most comprehensive site is provided by Wikipedia. Five new laws came into effect on January 1, 2005 in Great Britain, providing the British public with rights to access official information. Members of the public can now apply for any information held by public authorities on any topic and on any medium. VNU Exhibitions Europe has released the final data on attendance at the London Online meeting: more than 10,600 attendees, approximately 900 conference delegates and 230 exhibitor stands.

This article features the Web site 1919blacksox.com, which is designed to offer information on the Black Sox scandal, or the scandal involving the 1919 Chicago White Sox, the team accused of throwing the World Series. First of all, the site explains that the Black Sox incident didn't just come out of left field. Baseball had been trying to deal with gambling, with little success, for many years before the 1919 World Series. There are special features on each of the eight players implicated in the Black Sox scandal, including nicely done photo galleries, links to images of baseball cards, and career stats. The site also offers a historical perspective that includes mention of the Baseball Hall of Fame exhibit on the incident and the documents from that era that have forever been sealed by the hall's monitors. subject. It details some of the Black Sox memorabilia, including a ball autographed by the entire team and dated the final day of the World Series and a ticket stub. Ever the well-designed site, 1919blacksox.com also has a nice collection of links, including one for blackbetsy.com, the virtual hall of fame for Shoeless Joe Jackson; a law school paper on the Black Sox trial; and another Web site which is trying to restore the reputation of another player, third baseman Buck Weaver.

BLOGS ,WEBSITES - Abstract
This article deals with the proliferation of Weblogs in the U.S. as of 2004. According to a blogging history on Yahoo!, some people consider Mosaic's 1993 What's New page to be the first blog. In 1997, the term Weblog was coined by Jorn Barger with his Robot Wisdom Weblog. Only a handful of blogs existed in 1998. In 1999, the number began to grow dramatically after the proliferation of free Weblog-creation programs such as Blogger. These programs made it easy for anyone to create a blog, a process that has been called push-button publishing. By October 2000, bloggers were creating 300 new blogs a day. Whether or not bloggers are luring people away from words on paper is debatable, but there is strong evidence that bloggers are, in other ways, having a genuine impact on the world. Blogs brought former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott's endorsement of Strom Thurmond's 1948 pro-segregation platform to the attention of the traditional media. Blogs raised the first questions concerning documents about President George W. Bush's Air National Guard service aired by CBS News and sparked the media firestorm that led to the network's admission that the documents were, in fact, questionable. Bloggers are not threatening traditional media, nor replacing it--bloggers are enhancing it, adding additional voices, another check and balance. And bloggers are having an impact in many fields besides journalism and politics. Teachers are using blogs to educate. Scientists use them to share information and ideas. Photographers use them to offer their views and get people to see the world around them in new ways. Group blogs allow large numbers of people worldwide to create the feel of a community gathering. A skilled blogger can guide us to or through the information we need, whether we knew we needed it or not. But now, with so many skilled and unskilled bloggers, we are creating a vast, unknowable blogosphere that cannot be mastered.

The article ponders on the problems in the open-access movement. If self-archiving produces an environment where information is free and often available months in advance of print publication dates that also determine online availability from publisher Web sites, then the less-evaluated content may reach more users than the official versions. The same prohlem occurs in news coverage. When a hot story breaks, hundreds of news sources covering the saga, and the substantial majority of those sources will be repeating the same Associated Press stories with different titles. And then there are e-commerce problems that can snag money from everyone's wallets.
