This paper investigates an optimization of the conventional relay selection for multirelay environments. In contrast with previously reported selection schemes, where a selected relay accesses the channel in a dedicated cooperative slot, the proposed scheme recovers the bandwidth loss of the half-duplex constraint by allowing two relays to simultaneously access the channels. Based on an appropriate dirty-paper coding (DPC) technique among relays, the proposed scheme enables a relay to establish communication with the destination at the same time that another relay forwards the data from the source. It is proven that the interplay between relay selection and the superposition DPC weight factor provides a tradeoff between relaying and new data performance. Hence, an appropriate codesign of the superposition DPC parameter and opportunistic relay selection can achieve efficient communication for the new data without affecting the relaying performance. The proposed scheme is compared with conventional relaying approaches, and its enhancements are provided through theoretical studies and numerical results.

This paper discusses interference precancellation in digital hierarchical broadcasting (HB). In particular, we present the principles and implementation of structured dirty paper coding (SDPC) that approaches the capacity limit of dirty paper coding in multilayer broadcasting. As an alternative to Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP), SDPC eliminates the significant performance loss suffered by THP in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime due to the modulo operation. The key idea behind the SDPC scheme is the exploitation of the modulation structure of interference, thereby simplifying the demodulation process in hierarchical reception. We exemplify the SDPC technique by implementing an SDPC-based HB system on a real-time test bed. The experimental results show that SDPC delivers the performance of ldquosuperposition coding with successive interference cancellationrdquo without extra computation or memory requirements at the receiver side.

Most applications of underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs) rely upon reliable location information of sensor nodes. However, the harsh underwater environment makes localization more challenging as compared to terrestrial sensor networks. This paper is concerned with a localization issue for UASNs, subject to clock asynchronization and node mobility. A hybrid architecture including autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), active and passive sensor nodes is designed, where AUVs act as anchor nodes to provide localization information for sensor nodes. In order to eliminate the effect of asynchronous clocks and compensate the mobility of sensor nodes, an asynchronous localization algorithm with mobility prediction is provided for active and passive sensor nodes. Then, two localization optimization problems are formulated as minimizing the sum of all measurement errors. To solve the localization optimization problems, iterative least squares estimators are designed. In addition, the convergence analysis and Crame r–Rao lower bound for the localization errors are also provided. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed localization approach can reduce the localization time by comparing with the exhaustive search-based localization method. Meanwhile, the asynchronous algorithm in this paper can effectively eliminate the impact of the clock asynchronization and node mobility.

Increasing safety and automation in transportation systems has led to the proliferation of radar and IEEE 802.11pbased dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) in vehicles. However, current implementations of vehicular radar devices are expensive, use a substantial amount of bandwidth, and are susceptible to multiple security risks. In this paper, we use the IEEE 802.11 orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing communications waveform, as found in IEEE 802.11a/g/p, to perform radar functions. In this paper, we present an approach that determines the mean-normalized channel energy from frequencydomain channel estimates and models it as a direct sinusoidal function of target range, enabling closest target range estimation. In addition, we propose an alternative to vehicular forward collision detection by extending IEEE 802.11 DSRC and WiFi technology to radar, extending the foundation ofjoint communications and radar frameworks. Furthermore, we perform an experimental demonstration near DSRC spectrum using IEEE 802.11 standard compliant software defined radios with potentially minimal modification through algorithm processing on frequency-domain channel estimates. The results of this paper show that our solution delivers sufficient accuracy and reliability for vehicular RADAR if we use the largest bandwidth available to IEEE 802.11p (20 MHz). This indicates significant potential for industrial devices with joint vehicular communications and radar capabilities.

This paper focuses on the secure transmission of wireless-powered full-duplex (FD) relay systems, where a multiantenna source communicates with a single-antenna destination with the help of a FD relay in the presence of a single-antenna eavesdropper. It is assumed that the FD relay is wireless energy harvesting-enabled, adopting both transmit and receive antennas to harvest energy in a time switching (TS) mode. As the objective of this paper is to maximize the system secrecy rate through jointly designing the energy beamforming vector, the information beamforming vector and the TS coefficient, an optimization problem is formulated. The formulated problem is proved to be nonconvex and the challenge to solve which is to concurrently solve out the three variables. To cope with this difficulty, an iterative algorithm is proposed to convert the formulated optimization problem into three convex subproblems, based on which the closed form solutions for the beamforming vectors are derived and the TS coefficient is obtained. Convergence property of the iterative method is analyzed. Simulations are also done to verify the theoretical derivations in terms of the convergence speed and the secrecy rate. Results reveal that the secrecy rate performance of exploiting transmit antenna together with receive antenna for energy harvesting at the FD relay outperforms only receive antenna case. Moreover, although there exists loopback interference between antennas, the FD relaying can always substantially boost the secrecy rate compared with half-duplex relaying architecture.

As the conventional spatial modulation (SM) system lacks an efficient downlink multiple access scheme, this paper proposes a novel downlink nonorthogonal multiple access aided multiple-input multiple-output SM system with finite alphabet inputs. Mutual information (MI) is used to characterize the system's achievable spectral efficiency (SE). Because the MI lacks a closed-form formulation, in this paper we propose a computational-efficient lower bound to provide an approximation to the simulated MI. Besides, preprocessing is also designed at the receiver to mitigate the detrimental effect of channel correlation, which leads to striking a higher SE performance. Simulation results not only confirm the accuracy of our SE analysis, but also substantiate the superior SE performance achieved by the proposed preprocessing.

This paper presents an application of dynamically driven recurrent networks (DDRNs) in online electric vehicle (EV) battery analysis. In this paper, a nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) architecture of the DDRN is designed for both state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) estimation. Unlike other techniques, this estimation strategy is subject to the global feedback theorem (GFT) which increases both computational intelligence and robustness while maintaining reasonable simplicity. The proposed technique requires no model or knowledge of battery's internal parameters, but rather uses the battery's voltage, charge/discharge currents, and ambient temperature variations to accurately estimate battery's SOC and SOH simultaneously. The presented method is evaluated experimentally using two different batteries namely lithium iron phosphate ( $\text{LiFePO}_4$ ) and lithium titanate ( $\text{LTO}$ ) both subject to dynamic charge and discharge current profiles and change in ambient temperature. Results highlight the robustness of this method to battery's nonlinear dynamic nature, hysteresis, aging, dynamic current profile, and parametric uncertainties. The simplicity and robustness of this method make it suitable and effective for EVs’ battery management system (BMS).

Diversity is used to combat fading and shadowing in narrowband spectrum sensing. In this paper, we propose two new detection algorithms for wideband spectrum sensing that use square law combining (SLC) diversity to improve the detection performance. We analyze the performance of these algorithms under Nakagami fading. The proposed schemes include channel by channel square law combining (CC-SLC) and ranked square law combining (R-SLC). We first provide the asymptotic analysis for decision statistic of received energy to simplify the analysis. The approximated probability density function (pdf) to decision statistic is used to derive the pdf of received energy for $P$ number of diversity branches. The performance of the proposed algorithms is measured in terms of probability of insufficient spectrum opportunity ( $P_{\text{ISO}}$ ) and probability of excessive interference opportunity ( $P_{\text{EIO}}$ ). The analysis provided in this paper is general and can be used with any fading model and diversity scheme. Experiments are carried out using theoretical analysis and also verified by using Monte-Carlo simulation. Our analysis shows that the proposed algorithms using diversity outperform the channel by channel and ranked channel detection algorithms used under no diversity. Our results also indicate that among the proposed detection algorithms R-SLC performs better.

This paper reconsiders the design of blind interference alignment (BIA) for $K$ -user MISO interference channel in which each receiver is equipped with a reconfigurable antenna of preset $M_k\geq 3$ modes. Beyond the degree of freedom (DoF)-oriented BIA (D-BIA) design proposed by Lu et al. , we further take into account the frequency of mode switching within one supersymbol frame. Even though every receiving antenna is reconfigurable with preset multiple modes, from an engineering perspective, it is of practical importance for each receiving antenna to make less number of mode switching in order to gain the benefits such as less switching power consumption and less signal distortion. To this end, we propose in this paper switching-oriented BIA (S-BIA) scheme, which preserves the same degree of freedom (DoF) gain as D-BIA while offering reduced mode switching frequency. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that, compared to D-BIA, S-BIA can gain $100/(M-1)$ percent of switching saving when $M_k = M$ is odd for all transmitters. Remarkably, S-BIA offers 50% switching saving for multiuser $3\times 1$ interference channels.

Contrary to the traditional theoretical analysis with perfect self-interference cancellation, this paper studies the outage performance of a full-duplex (FD) decode-and-forward two-way relay system with the consideration of the residual self-interference incurred by the FD mode. The exact closed-form outage probability expressions are derived in this paper. In addition, the asymptotic outage performance is investigated when the transmit powers increase to infinity, and the result demonstrates that the outage probabilities monotonically increase and finally converge to 1 as the transmit power exceeds a certain threshold. Furthermore, optimal power allocation schemes and optimal relay node placement strategies are then proposed to improve the outage performance. Finally, simulation results are conducted to verify the accuracy of the theoretical analysis.

This paper considers both nondistributed and distributed multilevel amplify-and-forward (AF) wireless relay networks. For a fair comparison, the nondistributed multilevel AF relay network consists of a one-source–one-destination pair and a relay at each level with multiple antennas, whereas the distributed network consists of a one-source–one-destination pair and multiple distributed relays at each level with a single antenna at each relay. In this paper, relay beamforming matrices are determined for both networks based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. During data transmission, power is independently and individually constrained at the relays at each level. Finally, an iterative algorithm is proposed to solve the desired optimization problem.

A compact and efficient design for the electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter stage has become one of the most critical challenges in designing a high-density power converter, particularly for avionic applications. To maintain the regulatory standard requirements, EMI filter design needs to be precisely implemented. However, the attenuation characteristics of common-mode (CM) and differential-mode (DM) EMI filters may vary in practice from their respective theoretical calculations due to difficulty and inaccuracy in the noise modeling. This is particularly true for a three-phase active boost rectifier, which inherently has a CM high-frequency component in the rectifier output. This paper puts forward a detailed mathematical modeling of CM noise, originated from different sources, and discusses a concept to significantly reduce the CM noise effects. Furthermore, minimizing the weight and size of DM filter stage has been a design concern as the DM stage consumes a significant part of the weight of the whole system. This paper proposes a compact EMI filter topology with enhanced power density, which aims at satisfying the conducted EMI requirements according to DO-160F in avionics applications. The experimental verifications of the designed EMI filter are performed from the conducted emission results, obtained from a 6-kW laboratory prototype of an integrated stage of EMI and three-phase boost PFC converter.

In this paper, a spectrum-band selection scheme is developed for secondary users (SUs) in underlay spectrum-sharing networks to balance the performance between SUs and primary users (PUs) while guaranteeing PUs' priority. With the developed scheme, among multiple candidate spectrum bands, a given secondary transmitter (ST) is scheduled to access the spectrum band with minimum ratio of the ST–PU channel power gain to the SU link channel power gain. To evaluate this scheme, the SU's performance is investigated concerning its service delay. Under the constraint on average interference from the ST to PUs, the ST's optimal power allocation is obtained in a closed form to achieve the maximum effective capacity (EC) over SU links. Illustrative numerical results and asymptotic discussions substantiate the validity of our derivations and, moreover, demonstrate that, for the case of stringent delay requirements but loose average interference constraint, the band-selection scheme developed in this paper achieves better performance than both the selection of the band with maximum SU link channel power gain and that with minimum ST–PU channel power gain.

In cognitive radio networks, secondary users (SUs) can use a frequency band when the primary user (PU) of the band is not transmitting. Spectrum sensing is one of the methods that SUs employ to know if the PU has stopped transmitting. Accurate spectrum sensing boosts the likelihood that an SU detects a spectrum opportunity. However, it will be challenging for affordable receivers to support accurate spectrum sensing due to receiver impairments, including IQ imbalance and aliasing. Several other papers have developed methods that can address the effects of IQ imbalance in spectrum sensing. This paper presents a technique that can address not only IQ imbalance but the effects of aliasing on multiband spectrum sensing as well. We use channelized spectrum-domain modeling of receivers to develop the technique. This paper presents the theoretical development of the receiver modeling technique and the proposed spectrum sensing mechanism. The performance of the proposed mechanism is evaluated using simulations and hardware-based measurements. The results demonstrate that the proposed mechanism significantly enhances the opportunity detection probability of affordable cognitive radios with high IQ imbalance and poor antialiasing filter selectivity performances.

The use of unmanned aerial systems (UASs), which are also known as unmanned aerial vehicles, and by the term “drones” in the popular press, is growing rapidly. To ensure safety, UAS control and nonpayload communication (CNPC) links must operate very reliably in a variety of conditions. This requires an accurate quantitative characterization of the air–ground (AG) channel, and this channel characterization is the focus of this paper. After providing motivation and background, we describe our methods and modeling approach, followed by a description of our simultaneous dual-band (L-band ∼970 MHz, C-band ∼5 GHz) measurement campaign and the over-water (OW) measurement sites. Example results for path loss and root-mean-square delay spread are provided, as well as the results for channel stationarity distance (SD), used in calculating small-scale Rician $K$ - factor and correlations between the two receiver antennas that we employed in each frequency band. Two distinct SD measures—the power delay profile (PDP) correlation coefficient and the spatial autocorrelation matrix collinearity—were used and found to be of the same order. Path-loss exponents are near that of free space, but significant two-ray cancelation effects for these OW settings warrant more accurate models, which we provide. Delay spreads in the OW channels are also dominated by the two-ray components and are hence typically very small (∼10 ns) but can exceed 350 ns. A third intermittent multipath component (MPC) is also present a nonnegligible fraction of time; hence, we provide statistical wideband AG channel models to represent this. Future papers in this series will report results for the AG channel with ground sites in other types of environments.

This paper investigates the secrecy outage performance of transmit antenna selection (TAS)/maximal ratio combining (MRC) in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio networks (CRNs) over Rayleigh fading channels. In the considered system, a secondary user (SU-TX) equipped with N A (N A ≥ 1) antennas uses TAS to transmit confidential messages to another secondary user (SU-RX), which is equipped with N B (N B ≥ 1) antennas and adopts the MRC scheme to process multiple received signals. Meanwhile, an eavesdropper equipped with N E (N E ≥ 1) antennas also adopts the MRC scheme to overhear the transmitted information between SU-TX and SU-RX. SU-TX adopts the underlay strategy to guarantee the quality of service (QoS) of the primary user (PU) without spectrum sensing. In this paper, we derive the exact and asymptotic closed-form expressions for the secrecy outage probability (SOP). Simulations are conducted to validate the accuracy of the analysis.

Source localization based on time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) measurements from spatially separated sensors is an important problem in sensor networks. In this paper, we study the optimal geometries of a team of networked sensors for the TDOA-based localization problem, taking into account the a priori uncertainty of the source location. Two types of TDOA sensor pairing methods, namely, centralized and decentralized , are considered. Analytic solutions to the optimal sensor geometries in the ideal case are derived in both static and movable source cases. In the movable source case, sensor geometry design is investigated under an extended Kalman filter (EKF) framework. Furthermore, under sensor motion and communication constraints, we extend this paper to an optimal sensor path planning problem. Simulations demonstrate its enhancement to the source localization and tracking performance.

In this paper, we address the problem of securing information transmission in very adverse environments, i.e., no eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) and imperfect legitimate channel CSI, by introducing a massive multiple-input–multiple-output (M-MIMO) relay. The relay is powered through wireless power transfer from the source, such that it can flexibly adjust its position according to the secrecy requirement. The benefits of a M-MIMO relay are fully exploited to enhance both power transfer efficiency and information transmission security. In particular, the challenging issues incurred by short interception distance and long transfer distance are well addressed simultaneously. The focus of this paper is on investigating the secrecy performance of two classical relaying protocols, namely amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF), and obtaining explicit expressions of secrecy outage capacity in terms of transmit power, channel condition, and antenna number. Furthermore, we propose two effective performance optimization schemes, i.e., power control at the source, and relaying protocol switch at the relay. Finally, our theoretical claims are validated by simulation results.

In this paper, secure communication aided by a multiantenna cooperative jammer is investigated. Under very practical but adverse assumptions, i.e., no instantaneous jammer–eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) and imperfect instantaneous jammer–receiver CSI, the residual interference from the jammer to the legitimate receiver appears, even with spatial beamforming. Then, this paper analyzes the impact of imperfect CSI on the function of cooperative jamming and derives closed-form expressions of multiple secrecy performance metrics, including ergodic secrecy rate, secrecy outage capacity, and interception probability. Interestingly, it is found that two antennas at the jammer is always optimal. Furthermore, some insights are obtained through asymptotic analysis, e.g., the secrecy performance is saturated as the source transmit power increases, the ergodic secrecy rate is a linear function of CSI feedback bits in the region of high transmit power at the source/jammer, and interception probability is independent of transmit power at the source and is a decreasing function of transmit power at the jammer. Finally, theoretical claims are validated by simulation results.

In this paper, we consider a cooperative simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) network with one source–destination pair and multiple energy harvesting relays. How to efficiently use these relays has been addressed in conventional cooperative networks, and this paper investigates the impact of SWIPT on the performance of such multirelay cooperative networks. In particular, the main contribution of this paper is that a closed-form expression of the outage probability achieved by the multirelay cooperative protocol is obtained, as well as its approximation at high SNR. In addition, the performance of the cooperative network with the SWIPT relays is compared with that in conventional systems with self-powered relays.

Wireless systems employing frequency-division duplexing (FDD) must use duplexing filters to isolate the sensitive receiver from its own strong transmission. The number of filters in the duplexer is equal to the total number of aggregated transmit and receive bands. These filters are nontunable; therefore, a separate duplexer is required for each combination of operating bands. This paper presents an adaptive duplexer architecture capable of handling more than one receiver channel and tunable over a wide frequency range. The structure uses a combination of a low-isolation device with multiple analog canceling loops controlled by a normalized least mean squares (N-LMS) algorithm to track changes in signal leakage. The control is a multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) problem. This paper shows that modeling the inverse plant can orthogonalize the problem and dramatically improve convergence times with reduced complexity over previous search algorithms. Low-power pseudonoise (PN) pilot signals are proposed to detect and cancel the transmitter noise. Simulations show that 50 dB of isolation is possible with 20-MHz Long-Term Evolution (LTE)-like channels. Convergence takes 80 iterations (10 ms) from cold or 15 iterations (1.5 ms) for changes in carrier frequency or antenna loading.

Security and privacy have become increasingly critical demands in wireless networks, which, however, are particularly susceptible to eavesdropping attacks due to the broadcast nature of radio signals. This paper considers the problem of secure communication in the multiuser downlink with a passive eavesdropper (Eve), whose channel state information (CSI) is unavailable. The transmitter simultaneously transmits concurrent information signals to the users and artificial noise (AN) to Eve. We first assume that all users' CSI is perfectly known by the transmitter and derive a closed-form expression for the ergodic secrecy sum rate (SSR) in the large-system limit. We then use it as an objective function to optimize the power allocation between information signals and the AN. It shows that more power needs to be used for AN when Eve has more antennas and when the system serves fewer users. We also extend the analysis to the imperfect-CSI scenario, where the SSR saturates at high transmit power, and it is better to create more AN than to increase the signal strength when the channel estimation error is large. We derive a scale law of feedback bits (for frequency-division duplexing (FDD) systems) to maintain a constant rate offset compared with the perfect-CSI case and the optimal length of training sequence (for time-division duplexing (TDD) systems) to maximize the effective SSR. It shows that more feedback bits and longer training sequences are required to deal with the eavesdropping problem. Closed-form expressions derived in this paper can reduce the complexity of system analysis and design.

Resource allocation is an important strategy to optimize system performance in multiuser cooperative orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA) systems. In this paper, we jointly consider three different transmission modes in cooperative OFDMA systems, i.e., direct transmission (DT) mode, half-duplex (HD) relay cooperative transmission (HDRCT) mode, and full-duplex (FD) relay transmission (FDRT) mode. The joint optimization problem of transmission mode selection, subcarrier assignment, relay selection, subcarrier pairing, and power allocation (PA) is investigated. In this paper, we transform the binary assignment problem into a maximum-weighted bipartite matching problem, which can be solved by the classical Hungarian method. Based on the dual method, we solve the joint PA and binary assignment problem iteratively. Specifically, since the direct link is considered interference in the FD relay transmission mode, the PA problem in FD relay transmission mode is nontrivial. Thus, we provide a novel hierarchical dual method to solve the PA problem in FD relay transmission mode. In addition, in HDRCT mode, the joint transmission of both the source and relay is taken into account, and we provide a simple and insightful PA scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can significantly enhance the overall system throughput, compared with previous works.

International audience; This paper presents an online diagnosis method for the supercapacitors' aging problem. State-of-health (SoH) estimation is an important feature since aging introduces degradation in the supercapacitors' performance, which might eventually lead to their failure. SoH is usually measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. However, this has to be performed offline and requires interruption of the system's operation. Unlike this method, this paper presents an online diagnosis technique for supercapacitors using an extended Kalman observer as a well-known tool for its particularities and performances to study nonlinear parameter estimation. The main objective of this paper is the online SoH diagnosis based on the supercapacitors' aging indicator estimation. Moreover, the proposed online estimation strategy requires only voltage and current measurements, which reduces the number of sensors with respect to other methods. The effectiveness of the proposed online observer is shown through experimental results, and robustness to noise is also studied.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is an emerging technology that can realize electric power transmission over certain distances without physical contact, offering significant benefits to modern automation systems, medical applications, consumer electronics, etc. This paper provides a comprehensive review of existing compensation topologies for the loosely coupled transformer. Compensation topologies are reviewed and evaluated based on their basic and advanced functions. Individual passive resonant networks used to achieve constant (load-independent) voltage or current output are analyzed and summarized. Popular WPT compensation topologies are given as application examples, which can be regarded as the combination of multiple blocks of resonant networks. Analyses of the input zero phase angle and soft switching are conducted as well. This paper also discusses the compensation requirements for achieving the maximum efficiency according to different WPT application areas.

This paper discusses over-the-air (OTA) testing for multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) capable terminals with emphasis on wideband MIMO channel capacity analysis in a multiprobe anechoic chamber setup. In the literature, the spatial correlation simulation accuracy at the receiver (Rx) side has been used to determine the test area size for a limited number of probes. However, it is desirable that the test area size is defined in terms of data rate deviation of the simulated channel in the laboratory from that of the target channel model. This paper reports MIMO capacity analysis results for wideband spatiotemporal channel models, with emphasis on the impact of the spatial correlation at the transmit (Tx) side, the channel model, and the spatial correlation at the Rx side on the capacity simulation accuracy. Simulation results show that the number of probes is irrelevant to capacity simulation accuracy when the spatial correlation at the Tx side is in the high region (e.g., $\rho > \mbox{0.7}$ ). Furthermore, when correlation at the Tx side is low, the spatial correlation accuracy is less critical with small correlation at the Rx side. The simulation results are further supported by measurements in a practical multiprobe anechoic chamber setup. The capacity simulation accuracy is shown to be a valid measure to determine the test area size.

This paper investigates the scenario in which a weak desired signal reaches a poorly selective receiver along with a high-powered pulsed radar occupying a neighboring channel. Traditionally, an automatic gain control (AGC) is used to fit the high-powered radar into the dynamic range of the receiver. However, this approach desensitizes the receiver because it also sacrifices the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the desired signal. We propose the use of an auxiliary receive path to address this problem of strong neighboring channel signals. In this method, receiver gain is not lowered to avoid clipping. Instead, the strong signal is allowed to clip and distort the desired signal. This paper shows that only a subset of the symbols contained in the desired signal will be distorted; hence, redundancy within the desired signal (due to forward error correction) can be exploited to “fill the gaps” created by the distortion. The auxiliary path samples the envelope of the strong neighboring-channel signal and informs the decoder about which symbols are distorted (or “bad”) and which symbols are not distorted (or “good”). This additional information is shown to improve the estimation performance of the decoder in the presence of high-powered neighboring-channel radar. Using simulation and hardware-based experiments, it is shown that auxiliary-path-based receivers can obtain a significantly better throughput performance than AGC-based receivers.

Using collaborative sensors or other observing devices equipped with sectorized antennas provides a practical and low-cost solution to direction-of-arrival (DoA) and received signal strength (RSS) estimation, as well as noncooperative transmitter (TX) localization. In this paper, we study the performance and theoretical bounds of DoA/RSS estimation and localization using sectorized antennas. We first show that the sector-power measurements at an individual sensor form a sufficient statistic for DoA/RSS estimation and TX localization. Motivated by that, we then derive the Cramer–Rao bound (CRB) on DoA/RSS estimation based on sector-powers and study its asymptotic behavior. Moreover, we derive an analytical expression for the mean square error (MSE) of a practical sectorized-antenna-based DoA estimator, compare its performance to the derived CRB, and study its asymptotic properties. Next, we derive the CRB for localization based on sector-powers. The resulting CRB is a lower bound for a localization system where the DoA/RSS estimates, obtained from sector-powers at individual sensors, are fused together into a location estimate. Moreover, the CRB also covers the more general case of a localization system where the sector-powers from individual nodes are directly fused together, without an intermediate DoA/RSS estimation step. We compare the obtained CRB to a localization approach employing an intermediate DoA/RSS estimation step and observe that skipping this intermediate processing step may result in a substantially improved localization performance. Finally, we study the influence of various important system parameters, such as the number of sensors, sectors, and measurement samples, on the achievable estimation and localization performance. Overall, this paper demonstrates and quantifies the achievable DoA/RSS estimation and localization performance of sectorized antennas and provides comprehensive design guidelines for sector-power based low-complexity localization systems.

This paper proposes a novel double-grid-frequency-ripple-reducing technique for electric vehicle (EV) battery charger applications. In 1- $\phi$ EV battery chargers, due to double-frequency ripple, it is not possible to control the current using a single-power-stage approach. Hence, a two-stage approach is used. However, a bulky inductor and a capacitor are required to control the current, which adds to the system's weight and cost. The single-stage charging system described in this paper can charge the battery with almost ripple-free current without using a bulky electrolytic capacitor. At the same time, it can maintain high power factor (PF) and low total harmonic distortion on the input ac side. The proposed ripple compensation solution is realized by an innovative combination of boost and zeta converters connected in series with the battery charger, which reduces the filter capacitor value considerably. This facilitates the use of a film capacitor, which has a much longer life compared with an electrolytic capacitor. Similarly, the value of the filter inductor used in series with the battery is reduced significantly. Battery ripple current is not increased in the process; therefore, the battery life remains unaffected. Representative analytical, simulation, and experimental results are presented.

Densely deployed cellular wireless networks, which employ small cell technology, are being widely implemented. Mitigating the impact of inter- and intracell signal interferences induced by the operations of these networks is a challenging yet essential task. In this paper, we consider adaptive rate scheduling for a transmitting node, regardless of whether it is a base station (BS) or a mobile user. We aim to maximize the system's throughput through the employment of fractional frequency reuse (FFR) schemes. Each BS employs either an omnidirectional or a directional antenna system. We derive the optimal configuration of the FFR scheme and evaluate the ensuing system's performance behavior under absolute and proportional fairness requirements. To maximize the attained throughput by mobiles, we determine the best method to use to classify cell users into interior and edge mobiles. The bandwidth levels allocated for serving interior and edge mobiles are optimized. We derive approximate closed-form mathematical expressions for calculating the probability distributions of the interference signal levels measured at the destined receivers. We account for the impact of the classification process on intercell interference power levels. Under an absolute fairness requirement, we show that optimally configured FFR schemes lead to much enhanced performance. We show that the optimally configured directional-FFR schemes increase the throughput capacity by a factor of about 60% relative to that obtained by using optimal omnidirectional-FFR schemes. The analyses and simulation results presented in this paper serve to characterize the performance behavior attainable by using such small cell deployed cellular wireless network systems when employing the underlying configurations.

In this paper, a three-node wireless powered communication system is studied, where a power receiver harvests energy from a wireless power transmitter via wireless power transfer in the downlink and then executes information transfer in the uplink. According to this simple harvest-then-transmit protocol, the power receiver cannot harvest energy and send information simultaneously. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the tradeoff between wireless power transfer and information transfer to obtain good performance. The goal of this paper is to achieve the maximum throughput by balancing the time duration between the wireless power transfer phase and the information transfer phase while satisfying the energy causality constraint, the time duration constraint, and the quality-of-service constraint (i.e., the symbol error rate is lower than a target value). By solving the optimization problem, an optimal time allocation can be obtained. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the solution.

In this paper, we consider a single-relay-based decode-and-forward (DF) cooperative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system in which the source, the relay, and the destination are equipped with $N_{s}$ , $N_{r}$ , and $N_{d}$ antennas, respectively. We propose a joint antenna and path selection scheme, which jointly selects the single-transmit and single-receive antenna pairs, along with the selection of either a direct path that consists of source–destination channels or a cooperative path that consists of source–relay and relay–destination channels. The proposed selection scheme is based on the maximization of minimum of maximums (max-min-max) criterion of instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The analysis in this paper is based on the assumptions that all the channels follow independent Rayleigh fading. A closed-form expression of the symbol error rate (SER) for the proposed scheme in a cooperative MIMO system with $M$ -ary phase-shift keying is derived. We extract the analytical diversity order from the derived SER and show that the proposed selection scheme achieves the diversity order of $N_{s}N_{d}+N_{r}\mathrm{min}(N_{s},N_{d})$ in the considered cooperative MIMO system. Closed-form expressions of bandwidth efficiency (BE) and ergodic capacity $(C_{t})$ are derived for the proposed scheme. An optimized selection parameter from the specific set of values is numerically evaluated by maximizing a heuristic utility function $(C_{t}\times \mbox{BE}/\mbox{SER})$ . By using the already-gathered information about the maximum instantaneous SNR of every hop, a power adaptation scheme that maximizes the instantaneous SNR in the cooperative path is proposed and analyzed. The proposed power adaptation scheme, which is applied only in the event of selection of a cooperative path, outperforms the uniform-power-distribution-based DF cooperative MIMO system.

This paper concerns the uplink of multicell multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To tackle the effect of pilot contamination that is generally viewed as a bottleneck in previous work, this paper presents a superimposed pilot (SP)-aided uplink channel estimation scheme and mathematically characterizes the impact that an SP has on the performance of such a very large MIMO system. It is shown that there are two types of interference components that do not vanish, even when the number of antennas $M$ grows to infinity. The first type, which is referred to as cross-contamination, is due to the correlation between the SP and data among different cells. The second type, which is referred to as self-contamination, is due to the dependence between channel estimation and estimation error. Cross-contamination is, in principle, similar to pilot contamination in a conventional pilot-based multicell MIMO system, whereas self-contamination is unique for the SP-aided scheme. Both theoretical and simulation results demonstrate that the SP-aided scheme can effectively reduce the estimation contamination by increasing the data frame size and, in turn, achieve a significant improvement over the spectral efficiency, in comparison with conventional pilot-based methods.

Multipath fading can degrade the performance of a wireless communication system significantly when the data rate is as high as those systems beyond Long-Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A). To combat the multipath-fading effects, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques have been extensively studied and used in existing systems. However, another effective method to combat multipath fading is a code-division multiple access (CDMA) scheme, which has not been extensively investigated for relay network communication systems. This paper considers uplink CDMA relay networks (consisting of multiple sources, multiple relays, and a single destination) and downlinks (consisting of a combined source, multiple relays, and multiple destinations) under multipath fading. The objective of this paper is to propose a unique, simple, and effective method of finding optimum nonbinary pseudo noise (PN) spreading and despreading sequences employing a maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) criterion and channel state information (CSI). This paper also examines the sensitivity of the proposed schemes to 1-bit quantization, mistiming alignment, wideband jamming, and imperfect CSI. Simulation results verify that the proposed method shows much faster convergence in finding optimum PN sequences and better performance than existing schemes under the same environment.

This paper studies a cognitive radio network (CRN), in which a multiple-input single-output (MISO) secondary transmitter (SU-Tx) aims to send confidential messages to its receiver (SU-Rx) in the presence of unknown eavesdroppers, while having to control its generated interference to the primary users (PUs) under a given threshold. Because the eavesdroppers are unknown, this paper considers the artificial noise (AN) approach or masked beamforming to provide the information secrecy. The objective of this paper is to maximize the power of AN in order to degrade the eavesdroppers, subject to the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint at the SU-Rx, as well as the interference temperature limits (ITLs) for the PUs. In the case of perfect channel state information (CSI), we reveal that the optimal strategy for the information-bearing signal is beamforming. Imperfect CSI cases of bounded and stochastic uncertainties are investigated. In the case of ellipsoid-bounded errors, we derive the equivalent forms for the SINR and ITL constraints and then transform the optimization problem into a form of semidefinite programming (SDP). For the case of probabilistic CSI uncertainties, we propose an outage-constrained robust formulation where the CSI errors are Gaussian distributed. With the aid of two kinds of Bernstein-type inequalities, we reexpress the probabilistic constraints into deterministic forms, which results in a safe approximate solution.

This paper proposes a method of implementing analog eigenmode transmission for a short-range multiple-input–multiple-output (SR-MIMO) system that uses only 180° hybrid couplers. If the short-range MIMO system places transmitting and receiving arrays in line-of-sight (LOS) and symmetrically with respect to specific reference planes, the channel matrix in the system also becomes symmetrical. This allows the channel matrix to be diagonalized by connecting 180° hybrid couplers to both ports at the transmitter and receiver sides, i.e., eigenmode transmission can be realized. In this paper, first, the theory of the proposed technique is explained by taking a 2 x 2 MIMO as an example, based on the characteristics of 180° hybrid coupler and the theory of the cascade-connected network. Moreover, an extension to the method that offers 4 x 4 MIMO is also proposed. This paper clarifies that this proposed technique can diagonalize the channel matrix, regardless of array configuration, such as type of antennas and antenna spacing, as long as the symmetry of the system configuration is assured. Furthermore, numerical results verify that the distance between the transmitter and the receiver has no effect on channel orthogonality. As a result, this technique partially avoids the performance degradation caused by array displacement, which is a major disadvantage of the conventional analog-beamforming-based decoding technique for short-range MIMO systems. Thus, the superiority of the proposed technique is clear.

In this paper, the idea of signal space diversity is adopted to achieve a full-rate multiple-relay cooperative communication system. The data symbols are rotated at the source, before transmission, by a certain angle to permit signal detection either by the in-phase component or by the quadratic component. The real and imaginary parts of two consecutive symbols are transmitted by the source and $L$ relays. In the first time slot, the real part of the first symbol and the imaginary part of the second symbol are transmitted from the source to the destination and the relay(s) . In the second time slot, the best relay among all decode-and-forward relays forwards the imaginary part of the first symbol and the real part of the second symbol to the destination. The error probability performance of two relaying modes, referred to as reactive and proactive, is analyzed in this paper. In reactive cooperation, the best relay among all relays that decode the source signals correctly participates in forwarding a message to the destination in a preallocated time slot. On the other hand, in the proactive mode, a specific relay is selected, prior to transmission, to participate in the relaying phase. Additionally, asymptotic error probability expressions are derived for both relaying modes. Moreover, power allocation optimization at the source and the relays is carried out using the asymptotic-error-probability-derived formulas. Finally, the outage probability for both relaying modes is investigated, and approximate closed-form expressions are derived.

In multimode transceivers, the transmitter for one communication standard may induce strong interference in the receiver for another standard, often exceeding the desired signal by many tens of decibels. To linearly suppress this interference, the receiver requires a very large linear dynamic range, resulting in excessive power consumption. In a recent paper, a nonlinear block, which requires an adaptation signal proportional to the envelope of the received interference, has been used to strongly suppress the interference. In that work, the required adaptation signal for the nonlinear block has been determined analytically. In this paper, we quantify the required accuracy for the adaptation signal to properly suppress the interference while keeping the degradation to the receiver symbol error rate (SER) negligible. To provide the required accuracy, we propose a closed-loop method that calculates the adaptation signal based on a model, which describes the received interference in terms of the locally available baseband interference. We propose a method to adapt this model during the operation of the transceiver such that the power of the residual interference at the output of the nonlinear block is minimized. Our analysis shows that the proposed method can strongly suppress the interference while a SER close to that of an exactly linear receiver is achieved. Simulation results for a practical scenario validate this analysis.

The new multichannel/multicarrier technologies can potentially support much higher data rates in mobile multiple- access environments, such as carrier aggregation (CA) defined in the fourth-generation Long-Term Evolution Advanced enhance- ment. The correlation properties of noncontiguous subchannels are critical for the performance of CA, including cell coverage, frequency diversity, and channel state estimation. This paper has studied the correlation of the large-scale fading (LSF) and small-scale fading (SSF) of arbitrarily separated subchannels by realistic channel measurement and analytical modeling. We first obtain the subchannel correlation from the ultrawideband (UWB) channel measurement. This new approach avoids probing multiple subchannels simultaneously with channel sounders, which would be prohibitively complicated. The cross correlation of two distinct subchannels and the autocorrelation of a single subchannel are evaluated. Second, a new propagation model for the Nakagami-m fading in a multipath environment is proposed. The frequency- domain level crossing rate (FD-LCR) is defined and derived based on the propagation model. Then, a Markov chain for the frequency fading of the wideband channel is established, which can generate the correlated gain/power of subchannels in a wide bandwidth. Therefore, this model can be used as a fast simulator of CA over correlated subchannels. Finally, the cross correlation coefficients (CCCs) between two Nakagami-m fading subchannels obtained from the measurement and the proposed Markov model are compared with the analytical results in the literature. This paper provides important insights into the fading correlation of the multicarrier channels and can be applied to the design and simulation of indoor/outdoor multicarrier communications. Effective capacity (EC) is a valuable metric in investigating the impact of the physical-layer infrastructure on the quality of service (QoS) of the data link layer. By means of the EC, this paper provides a link-layer look at the concept of multirelaying transmission. A closed-form expression for the EC of a multirelay network is derived to simplify the computation of this quantity. It is shown that increasing the number of relays leads to an unavoidable reduction in EC. Some techniques such as best relay selection (BRS) and distributed space–time coding (DSTC) are used to solve this problem. It is found that the EC performance of BRS, DSTC, and direct transmission schemes extremely depends on the amount of QoS exponent $\theta$ . Inspired by this dependence, a novel interesting cross-layer relaying transmission framework is introduced, in which the best scheme of transmission is selected for maximizing the EC, according to the amount of $\theta$ and the channel gain. Then, by the goal of EC maximization under a given $\theta$ , a cross-layer fixed power-allocation (PA) algorithm is proposed based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The numerical results validate our analytical outcomes and evaluate our proposed algorithms. The complexity of the proposed algorithms is analyzed at the end of this paper.

In this paper, we consider a multiantenna system where the receiver should harvest energy from the transmitter by wireless energy transfer to support its wireless information transmission. To maximize the harvesting energy, we propose the performance of adaptive energy beamforming according to the instantaneous channel state information (CSI). To help the transmitter obtain the CSI for energy beamforming, we further propose a win-win CSI quantization feedback strategy to improve the efficiencies of both power and information transmission. The focus of this paper is on the tradeoff of wireless energy and information transfer by adjusting the transfer duration with a total duration constraint. By revealing the relationship between transmit power, transfer duration, and feedback amount, we derive two wireless energy and information transfer tradeoff schemes by maximizing an upper bound and an approximate lower bound of the average information transmission rate, respectively. Moreover, the impact of imperfect CSI at the receiver is investigated, and the corresponding wireless energy and information transfer tradeoff scheme is also given. Finally, numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

This paper investigates and compares the performance of wireless sensor networks where sensors operate on the principles of cooperative communications. We consider a scenario where the source transmits signals to the destination with the help of L sensors. As the destination has the capacity of processing only U out of these L signals, the strongest U signals are selected, while the remaining (L - U) signals are suppressed. A preprocessing block similar to channel shortening (CS) is proposed in this paper. However, this preprocessing block employs a rank-reduction technique instead of CS. By employing this preprocessing, we are able to decrease the computational complexity of the system without affecting the bit-error-rate (BER) performance. From our simulations, it can be shown that these schemes outperform the CS schemes in terms of computational complexity. In addition, the proposed schemes have a superior BER performance as compared with CS schemes when sensors employ fixed-gain amplification. However, for sensors that employ variable-gain amplification, a tradeoff exists in terms of BER performance between the CS scheme and these schemes. These schemes outperform the CS scheme for a lower signal-to-noise ratio.

Because it achieves similar performance to that of orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) with much more favorable envelope characteristics and lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), single-carrier frequency-division multiple access (SC-FDMA) was chosen as the uplink transmission technology for Long Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced systems. This choice has provoked a growing interest in this transmission technology; therefore, there is extensive literature on its performance in terms of bit error rate (BER) and PAPR. However, research on its spectral efficiency has been scarce until now. This paper aims to help fill this gap with an analytical study of the spectral efficiency in SC-FDMA when adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and linear frequency-domain equalization are applied. This paper therefore computes the spectral efficiency for zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum-mean-square-error frequency-domain equalization (MMSE-FDE) for different Nakagami-m fading channels.

In this paper, we investigate the effect of channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) on the performance of a class of transmission schemes for multi-input–multi-output (MIMO) systems that can be collectively called space modulation (SMod) schemes. Space shift keying (SSK) is a simple example of SMod. In SMod, multiple antennas at the transmitter are employed to spatially modulate the information. The constellation vectors at the receiver are linear combinations of columns of the channel matrix, and therefore, the symbol error rate (SER) performance of the system highly depends on the Euclidean distance between each pair of these vectors. In this paper, we propose two novel methods to design the transmit vectors using CSIT such that the distance between each pair of constellation vectors at the receiver becomes larger, which, in turn, reduces the SER. Whereas in the first method we do not impose any constraint on the structure of the transmit vectors, in the second method, we confine the transmit vectors to have only one nonzero entry, and as such, it can be looked at as a modified SSK (MSSK) transmission scheme. This is to avoid interantenna synchronization (IAS) as only one transmit antenna is active at a time. Compared to SSK, the first method provides a significant performance improvement at the expense of increased complexity at the transmitter due to IAS. The second method provides an appealing SER improvement while keeping the complexity the same as that of SSK. Therefore, one can look at the second method as a modified version of SSK in which instead of transmitting a fixed symbol from one of the transmit antennas, in our proposed method, different transmit powers and phases are assigned to different transmit antennas. As acquiring full CSIT is difficult in some cases, we also consider the case of imperfect CSIT and derive alternative SMod transmission schemes in this case. By simulation, we show that the proposed SMod transmission schemes provide a significant performance improvement in terms of the SER in the presence of full or imperfect CSIT.

Chained turbo equalization (CHATUE) has been recently recognized as a low-complexity frequency-domain turbo equalization technique that eliminates the necessity of transmitting the cyclic prefix (CP), and hence allows for spectrally efficient signaling in wireless communications. However, two issues arise from the original version of CHATUE (referred to as CHATUE1) as a consequence of eliminating the CP, which are the noise enhancement and the latency due to the time-concatenated structure. This paper proposes a new version of CHATUE (referred to as CHATUE2) to solve the noise enhancement problem. CHATUE2 retrieves the circulant structure of the channel matrix, originally inherent within the CP transmission, by utilizing composite replica signals that combine the received signals and the soft reference signals replicated from the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) fed back from the decoder. For this purpose, this paper determines the optimal combining ratio based on the minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) criterion. CHATUE2 is hence able to achieve an improvement in bit-error-rate (BER) performance over CHATUE1. In addition, this paper provides a solution to solving the latency problem by making a practical assumption on the training sequence (TR) transmission, which is required to perform channel estimation generally, in practical systems. Furthermore, this paper proposes a new channel estimation technique, i.e., chained turbo estimation (CHATES), which improves the spectrum efficiency and asymptotically achieves the Cramer–Rao bound (CRB). CHATES assumes that the TR length is exactly equal to the channel impulse response (CIR) length, although the conventional technique requires twice as long or even longer TR lengths. Numerical results show that CHATUE2 with CHATES achieves a gain of 1 dB over conventional turbo equalization with a CP at a BER of $\hbox{10}^{-5}$ in realistic propagation scenarios represented by channel sounding measurement data and in model-based frequency-selective fading channels.

Electric vehicle technology has been adopting fuel cells (FCs) for hybrid applications over the past few years. Therefore, the development of advanced power electronic systems for the integration of fuel cells with on-board energy management is fundamental for achieving high-performance systems. An FC for vehicular applications is usually a low-voltage current-source like device that produces electricity and heat directly from input hydrogen and oxygen. Most often, it is required that the FCs be stacked for high-voltage dc-link in order to supply the input power for the drivetrain and electric motor drive system. The FC has a nonlinear nature, and it must be controlled to operate in the high-efficiency operating range. Hybrid electric vehicles have physical constraints such as volume and weight under limited cost and expected lifetime. There is a need for high-voltage input/output ratio of dc-dc boost converters to be connected between the FC to the motor drive dc-link. In addition, it is necessary to have low input ripple at the dc-dc boost converter in order to maximize the FC lifetime, and the traditional dc-dc boost converter topologies have poor performance on these specifications. This paper proposes a new dc-dc converter family of topologies aimed at improving the application to electric vehicle power control. This family is defined as floating-interleaving boost converters (FIBCs). The paper will thoroughly show analysis and experimental verification of FIBC's, and they will be compared with conventional boost converter characteristics. The paper supports how performance figures related to the passive components, i.e., the inductor and capacitor, will have better volume and weight, extremely low input current ripple, and improved efficiency and transfer ratio. The analysis presented in this paper shows how to choose the most suitable topology in order to achieve the desired specifications. The selected topology is fully validated experimentally using advanced nonlinear sliding mode control, which has the additional feature of operating even in faulty conditions.

This paper studies the information-theoretic metric of outage probability for a half-duplex asymmetric two-way amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying. Unlike current research activities, our main purpose is to examine the impact of traffic asymmetry on system outage probability. First, an exact but two-integral-form outage probability is derived over Rayleigh fading channels. To provide more insight, a closed-form asymptotic outage probability is then obtained. It is shown that the outage probability in the system is determined only by the one-way channel or related to the two-way links, depending on the asymmetric level of the two senders' target rates and the terminals' average transmission powers. Following this analysis, optimum power allocation and opportunistic relay selection are studied to optimize the overall performance of the considered AF scenario. Next, with the aid of traffic knowledge, novel power allocation and relay selection criteria are proposed, followed by an analysis of the outage probability with the relay selection. Simulation experiments are performed to validate the proposed studies in this paper. The results show that the proposed power allocation and relay selection methods can achieve significant performance gains in terms of outage probability, regardless of symmetric or asymmetric traffic and channels.

Cell search and synchronization in the Third-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long-Term Evolution (LTE) system is performed in each user equipment (UE) by using the primary synchronization signal (PSS) and secondary synchronization signal (SSS). The overall synchronization performance is heavily dominated by robust PSS detection, which can be achieved in the conventional noncoherent detector by exploiting the essential near-perfect autocorrelation and cross-correlation properties of Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequences. However, a relatively high computational complexity is observed in conventional algorithms. As compared with them, two new detectors, i.e., almost-half-complexity (AHC) and central-self-correlation (CSC) detectors, are proposed in this paper to achieve reliable PSS detection with much lower complexity by exploiting the central-symmetric property of ZC sequences. The complexity of the proposed CSC detector is only 50% that of the AHC detector, which achieves exactly the same PSS detection accuracy as that of the conventional detector with one half of complexity being saved. An improvement of CSC, i.e., CSCIns, is also proposed in this paper to combat the large-frequency offset. The performance of the CSCIns detector is independent of the frequency offset, and numerical results show that the 90% PSS acquisition time of CSCIns can be well within an 80-ms duration, even in a heavy intercell-interference environment with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of -10 dB.

Given the widespread deployment of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based wireless systems, reliable spectrum sensing of OFDM waveforms is of great interest for future cognitive radio systems. Use of the embedded pilots of OFDM signals has been extensively studied in the literature. Such techniques rely on having correlated pilots to improve detection sensitivity. However, the impact of synchronization in accuracy and implementation impairments has not been thoroughly studied in the literature. This paper discusses the pilot-aided cyclostationary detection (PACSD) method as a practical structure to detect OFDM signals under asynchronous conditions. The presented analysis quantifies the performance of a detection method without exhaustive searching, compared with an ideal system. This paper goes on to investigate the impact of radio-frequency (RF) front-end nonidealities on the overall performance of the PACSD. We develop closed-form expressions for performance loss in the presence of in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance, carrier frequency offset, phase noise, and sampling clock frequency offset (SCFO). These results show that the most detrimental impairment is that of SCFO, where a 20-ppm offset can result in a 9-dB performance loss. We then present a modified detector structure to compensate for this huge loss. Analysis and simulation show that, using the modified technique, we can get within 2 dB of the ideal no-offset case.

This paper studies the power allocation problem for a cognitive radio (CR) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system under spectrum sharing with an existing primary radio network. In particular, the ergodic capacity maximization problem is studied in the Rayleigh fading cognitive MIMO channel under both the total transmit power constraint and a set of interference power constraints where each is applied at one of the primary receivers (PRs). This paper considers that the channel from primary transmitter (PT) to secondary receiver (SR), and the channel from secondary transmitter (ST) to SR are both in short-term fading due to the mobility of SR, whereas the channels from ST to PRs are in long-term fading. By using the Lagrangian dual method, the optimal transmit precoding matrix is derived, and some nearly optimal power allocation algorithms are proposed to maximize the bounds of secondary user ergodic capacity. Performance analysis and simulation results show that the proposed schemes can approach the comparative capacity of the optimal power allocation algorithm, which has perfect instant channel state information (CSI), particularly when the antenna number of the ST exceeds the total antenna number of PRs.
