This paper addresses the estimation and compensation of I/Q imbalance, one of the most prominent impairments found in wideband zero-intermediate frequency transceivers (TRxs). The I/Q imbalance encountered in this kind of TRx comprises not only frequency-selective gain and phase imbalance but also delay imbalance. Unless appropriate compensation is applied, the I/Q imbalance significantly degrades the performance of a communication system. This paper presents a novel compensation technique for transmitter I/Q imbalance based on built-in-self-calibration, a low cost and robust compensation technique that enables manufacturing as well as in-field calibration with low computational complexity. The method's performance is evaluated in a TRx with 64-quadratic-amplitude modulation and 2 GHz of bandwidth implemented with real hardware. The measurements show that the proposed technique achieves an image rejection ratio greater than 35 dB in the entire 2 GHz bandwidth and an error vector magnitude lower than 3%. In this paper, a novel terminated coupled line structure (TCLS) is introduced, which is constructed by a coupled line section and four terminations loaded on it. Introducing different kinds of terminations, three types of bandpass filters (BPFs) based on TCLSs are proposed, theoretically analyzed, and fabricated, including two single-ended wideband BPFs with fractional bandwidths (FBWs) of 67% and 40% respectively, and a wideband differential BPF with 74% differential-mode FBW. These BPFs can achieve wide passband bandwidth, low in-band insertion loss, high passband selectivity, as well as deep stopband rejection performance simultaneously, benefited from the multiple transmission zeros and transmission poles obtained by the TCLSs. The practical design procedures of these BPFs are presented and explained. The agreement among theoretical predictions, EM-simulated, and measured results validates our proposed filter structures. Four novel architectures of wideband five-port single-ended-to-balanced power dividers with broadband common-mode suppression are proposed in this paper. The bandpass filtering capability with/without close-to-passband transmission zeros are also incorporated in some of them to obtain multifunctional single-ended-to-differential-mode filtering/power division operation. Two ideal 180° phase inverters are used to replace the conventional half-wavelength transmission line-based inverters in the basic power divider structure so that wideband common-mode rejection and a smaller circuit size are achieved. Quarter-wavelength transmission lines and coupled-line sections are exploited to simultaneously realize the bandpass filtering and wideband power division functionalities. Each five-port power divider exhibits broadband 3-dB single-ended-to-balanced power division, high in-band input–output power-matching levels, high in-band power isolation levels between the two balanced outputs and wideband common-mode rejection. The theoretical analysis, parametric study, and design procedure for the conceived single-ended-to-differential-mode power dividers are provided. In this paper, we present a frequency analysis of a compensated impedance inverter and its effective implementation in the context of high-power Doherty amplifier (DPA) design. On the basis of an idealized DPA model, we calculate the expected operative bandwidth and the corresponding maximum drain efficiency as a function of the modulated signal statistics. In addition, we introduce an effective technique for the implementation of the compensated impedance inverter, suitable for preserving its broadband characteristics in the presence of large device’s output capacitance. The implementation technique is based on the generalized equivalent transmission-line equivalence principle, which considers both shortening and lengthening the equivalent transmission lines. We demonstrate that, by the proposed approach, parasitic absorption is possible maintaining a low $Q$ -factor of the equivalent network. The technique is validated by the development of a silicon laterally diffused metal–oxide–semiconductor DPA with optimized peak power and efficiency for applications in the 650–950-MHz band. The fabricated prototype is characterized by an LTE signal with a 20-MHz bandwidth and peak-to-average-power ratio of 7.5 dB and features an average drain efficiency between 37% and 47%, with an average power of 49 dBm across 37.5% of the bandwidth. This paper presents a monolithic microwave integrated circuit multifunction chip implemented using a 0.25- \mu \textm gallium arsenide pseudomorphic high-electron-mobility transistor process for use in a phased array jammer transmitter. This chip, which operates in the frequency range of 6–18 GHz, provides several functions including 8-bit true time delay (TTD), 7-bit attenuation, wideband amplification, and digital serial-to-parallel conversion for 15-bit control. The TTD and attenuation coverage are 255 ps with a step of 1 ps and 31.75 dB with a step of 0.25 dB, respectively. The TTD employing an artificial transmission line configuration demonstrates a root-mean-square delay error of less than 1.7 ps in the operating frequency range. The chip has a compact size of 4\,\,\ mm \times 5 mm and exhibits a typical gain of 12 dB and an output P1dB of 16.5 dBm over a frequency range of 6–18 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This paper presents a stacked RF front-end (RFE) package for wideband receiver applications. While having a power consumption of 18 mW, the flipped CMOS chip consisting of a low-noise amplifier and a quadrature down-conversion mixer stacks on a glass integrated passive device (GIPD) substrate, subsequently achieving a noise figure of 2.2–2.8 dB and a conversion gain of 23–25 dB over 1–6 GHz. Moreover, the RFE package uses a GIPD balun with a high common-mode rejection ratio and a post-distortion linearizer in the CMOS mixer, subsequently resulting in an IIP2 of 57–68 dBm and an IIP3 of -5.2–-3.5 dBm over the entire operating band. This paper also elucidates how coupling between the flipped CMOS chip and GIPD balun affects the RFE linearity. Packaged integrated low-pass quasi-load insensitive (QLI) class-E matching is proposed for the realization of energy-efficient wideband Doherty and outphasing transmitters. In view of this, a dedicated QLI class-E harmonic matching technique, suitable for in-package integration has been developed, optimized, and evaluated. As proof of concept, very compact, as well as easy to assemble, dual-input load-modulating transmitters have been realized. In this paper, we focus on a QLI class-E matched wideband Doherty that provides 71% peak efficiency (±3%) at 48-dBm saturated output power and 49% (±7%) efficiency at 6-dB power backoff, over a 1200-MHz frequency span (1.4–2.6 GHz), yielding 60% fractional bandwidth (BW). When tested with single-carrier long-term evolution (LTE) signals, having a 7-dB peak-to-average ratio, average efficiency remains close to 49% (±3%) for the entire 60% fractional BW. The realized demonstrator shows excellent linearizability with adjacent channel power ratio and normalized mean square error levels below −50 dBc and −36 dB, respectively, even when operated in simultaneous dual-band LTE operation. We present two monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) cryogenic broadband low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) based on the 100 nm gate length InP high-electron mobility transistor technology for the frequency range of 0.3–14 and 16–28 GHz. The 0.3–14 GHz three-stage LNA exhibited a gain of 41.6 ± 1.4 dB and an average noise temperature of 3.5 K with a minimum noise temperature of 2.2 K at 6 GHz when cooled down to 4 K. The 16–28 GHz three-stage LNA showed a gain of 32.3 ± 1.8 dB and an average noise temperature of 6.3 K with a minimum noise temperature of 4.8 K at 20.8 GHz at the ambient temperature of 4 K. This is the first demonstration of cryogenic MMIC LNA covering the whole K-band. This paper presents a novel power combining architecture, referred to as distributed efficient power amplifier (DEPA) that mitigates the inherent bandwidth limiting factors in a Doherty power amplifier (DPA), namely, impedance inversion and load modulation, by distributing the conventional auxiliary amplifier of the DPA to multiple auxiliary subamplifiers along a broadband multisection impedance transformer. The proposed technique is demonstrated through the design, implementation, and measurement of a wideband DEPA having 8-dB output power back-off and 72% fractional bandwidth. The experimental results show a Doherty-like efficiency enhancement from 1.8 to 3.8 GHz. For the output power levels of 37.4±1.1 and 45.4±1.1 dBm, corresponding to 8-dB OBO and peak output power, the efficiency levels are between 41%–51% and 42%–62%, respectively. A single-output, band selecting interposer is designed to combine three identical all-digital CMOS transmitter (Tx) chips. The open-drain CMOS Txs are flip-chip connected to the primary windings of three frequency selecting transformers realized on a single PCB interposer. The secondary windings of the three transformers are connected in series and they share a single output. Across 0.4 to 4 GHz, a peak power higher than 22.9 dBm is achieved collectively by the three sub-Txs with a drain efficiency (DE) better than 25%. The peak powers/DE of the three sub-Txs are 28.6 dBm/50%, 27.4 dBm/49%, and 24.7 dBm/34%, at 0.85, 2.1, and 3 GHz, respectively. This paper further demonstrates that the band selection can be achieved via reconfiguring the CMOS inverse Class-D switching power amplifiers. As demonstrated via continuous wave and 64-quadratic-amplitude modulation, WLAN, and LTE modulation tests, the reconfigurable Tx package exhibits high power and efficiency across all supported bands. Recently, a new empty coaxial structure, entirely built with printed circuit boards, has been proposed. The resulting coaxial line has low radiation, low losses, high-quality factor, and is nondispersive. Up to now, this coaxial line has not been completely integrated in a planar substrate, since a working transition to a traditional planar line has not been defined yet. Therefore, in this paper, a high-quality transition from coplanar waveguide to this new empty coaxial line is proposed. With this transition, the coaxial line is completely integrated in a planar circuit board, so that it truly becomes an empty substrate-integrated coaxial line. The proposed transition has been fabricated. Both full-wave simulated and measured results show an excellent agreement. Therefore, the proposed transition is suitable to develop completely substrate-integrated components for applications in wideband communication systems that require very high quality responses and protection from external interferences. To show this fact, this new transition has been applied to integrate a high-performance empty coaxial filter in a planar substrate. The measured response of this filter is excellent, and proves the goodness of the proposed transition that has enabled, for the first time, the complete integration of an empty coaxial line in a planar substrate. A new wideband balanced power dividing/combining network with high isolation is proposed in this paper. The differential/common mode equivalent circuits of the balanced network can be easily reduced based on the matrix transformation. Two double-sided parallel-strip line (DSPSL) 180^\circ phase inverters loaded with four isolation resistors are used to realize high isolation for the power division output ports. A planar wideband balanced network with bandwidth 52.7% of (1.68–2.84 GHz, \vert Sdd21, Sdd31\vert >- 4 dB) for the differential mode and high isolation for the differential/common mode is designed and fabricated. In this paper, two proposed bandwidth (BW) extension techniques are discussed and analytically analyzed. The capabilities of the proposed feedback techniques are demonstrated with two design examples of different circuitry, supported by simulation and measurement results. The first design example is a broadband low-power active balun, employing one of the presented feedback techniques. It is capable of operating with a gain of 2.2 dB and BW of more than 70 GHz. The amplitude imbalance is less than 2.4 dB, while the phase imbalance is below 7^\circ up to 60 GHz and 14^\circ up to 70 GHz, consuming a low-power of 29.7 mW. The second design example is a differential three-stage amplifier, incorporating the two techniques, where their combined performance achieves a gain of 54 dB and a 3-dB BW of 25 GHz, resulting in a gain-BW product (GBP) of 12.5 THz, with a power consumption of 180 mW from a 3.3-V supply. In this paper, we further develop the concept of a wideband Doherty power-amplifier topology with reconfigurable efficiency. This is done by presenting new theory that - in contrast to previous work - makes it possible to analyze how the performance of the amplifier depends on the input network properties and the choice of gate bias voltages. The utility of the presented theory is demonstrated by the design and characterization of a gallium-nitride monolithic-microwave integrated-circuit amplifier designed in close agreement with the theoretical findings. Continuous-wave (CW) measurements show that the fabricated amplifier provides more than 31% power-added efficiency (PAE) at 9-dB output power back-off over a 5.8-8.8-GHz frequency range, and that the efficiency can be reconfigured as predicted by the presented theory. Modulated measurements - employing digital pre-distortion (DPD) and a 20-MHz signal with 8.5-dB peak-to-average power ratio - show more than 32% average PAE across the same 5.8-8.8-GHz frequency range. Both the CW and the modulated measurements thereby verify the wideband performance predicted by the theory. In addition, modulated measurements at 7.0 GHz without DPD show that the amplifier can provide excellent raw linearity by demonstrating -41.0-dBc adjacent channel power ratio and -34.2-dB normalized mean square error. In this paper, a new design concept of Schiffman phase shifters under the operation of the second phase period in frequency domain is presented and analyzed. By investigating phase properties of the C-section structure, we first find that its second phase period is another independent and distinctive working region for Schiffman phase shifter, in addition to its first phase period. In contrast to traditional counterparts working on the first phase period, which are suitable for small phase shift from 0° to 90°, the Schiffman phase shifters on the second phase period are suitable for the large phase shift from 90° to 180°. It is because of the opposite phase variation property that the electrical length of reference line gets shortened as the phase shift value increases. Compared with the first phase period, the second phase period can achieve wider phase shift bandwidth under the same coupling degree. This feature is believed to be very useful in the limited realizable coupling degree cases. In this context, the closed-form synthesis formulas of Schiffman phase shifter on the second phase period are presented. Meanwhile, detail theoretical analysis of the phase shift bandwidth and phase deviation is carried out. Applying a spectrally efficient modulation to a wideband signal provides an extremely high data rate potential in millimeter-wave communication. In reality, wideband systems, as reported in open literature, typically suffer from insufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and thus are not able to support high-order modulation. In a recent experimental study, we have identified that a high noise floor from frequency-multiplied local oscillator (LO) sources is a major data rate limitation in wideband systems. In this paper, we present a detailed study with a mathematical model to describe the influence of the LO noise on a communication signal through frequency conversion. Followed by experimental investigations using multigigabit 64-quadrature amplitude modulation signals, measurements are performed at frequency up- and down-conversions. Both cases show SNR degradation on the frequency-converted signals as the corresponding LO noise floor increases. We provide experimental proof that the nature of the LO noise floor is white, with nearly the same amount of phase and amplitude noises. In this paper, a new class of wideband filtering phase shifters with a pair of controllable out-of-band transmission zeroes is presented for the first time. The proposed wideband filtering differential phase shifter consists of two stub-loaded multimode resonators (SLMMR) in the main and reference branches, which can provide a constant phase shift and self-realized generalized Chebyshev filtering function with controllable transmission zeroes by properly setting the impedance ratio $R_{\mathrm {z}}$ of the loaded stub. On the one hand, the prescribed phase shift value, phase deviation, and phase shift bandwidth are deduced that basically dominated by resonant modes of SLMMR together with electrical lengths of the phase-shifting lines. On the other hand, the phase properties of transmission zeroes are systematically investigated to demonstrate that they arouse little effect on the phase shift performance, but highly improve the frequency selectivity in theoretical analysis. Based on the presented synthesis method which simultaneously considers wideband phase shift and bandpass filtering function, the circuit parameters of the entire proposed phase shifter can be synthesized with prescribed phase shift value, phase deviation, bandwidth, return loss, and transmission zero positions. Besides, the phase shift and return loss bandwidth can be determined in the design process. Modern wireless network operators are consistently looking for improvements in the wireless access infrastructure that minimize size, weight, and power. Therefore, compact multiband RF and wideband RF solutions offer an attractive role in forthcoming fifth generation networks. This paper presents a novel compact wideband RF transmitter architecture that is based upon an undersampled digital predistortion (DPD) methodology. The proposed architecture minimizes the required number of RF/analog components in the system by using RF-DAC-based direct RF sampling at the forward transmitter data path and one undersampled analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) with certain bandpass filters at the DPD sampling receiver path. Extensive experimental results validate that the DPD-enabled RF transmitter bandwidth can be significantly increased using the proposed multirate track-and-hold amplifiers architecture. Experimental tests achieved multiple GHz DPD bandwidths with satisfactory linearization performance via very compact sampling receiver that has one undersampled ADC. Particularly, we evaluated three application scenarios: 1) three-band carrier aggregated LTE signals (each one occupying 20-MHz instantaneous bandwidth), the linearization performance achieved 50-dBc adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) with more than 1-GHz bandwidth using ADC running at 76.8 and 61.44 MSPS; 2) single-band LTE signal with continuous 100-MHz instantaneous bandwidth, the linearization performance achieved −48-dBc ACPR using 61.44-MSPS ADC; and 3) single-band LTE signal with continuous 20-MHz bandwidth at 4 GHz, the linearization performance achieved −54-dBc ACPR using 61.44-MSPS ADC. This paper reports an area-efficient and tunable bandwidth (BW)-extension technique for a wideband CMOS amplifier to handle very high rate (50+ Gb/s) signaling while keeping a low jitter penalty. We identify its architectural advantages by correlating the performances with the frequency domain (magnitude and group delay (GD) responses) and time domain (impulse and step responses) and comparing them with the existing solutions. Specifically, our technique enables a flexible ac characteristic by introducing a tunable grounded active inductor in the bridged-shunt peaking topology, offering: 1) a high BW enhancement ratio (BWER = $2.65\times$ ); 2) BW-power scalability with small in-band gain variation; and 3) fine tunability of the passband gain without affecting the BW, GD, and power. The experimental prototype is a 65-nm CMOS four-stage differential amplifier occupying just 0.0077 mm2. It delivers a 15-dB gain over a 43-GHz BW with 45-mW power consumption. Small in-band gain variation (0.58 dB) and ripple (1.53 dB) are concurrently achieved with low in-band GD variation (17 to 35.3 ps) and ripple (18.3 ps). In this paper, we propose a technique for comprehensive analysis of nonlinear and dynamic characteristics of multi-antenna transmitters (TXs). The analysis technique is enabled by the development of a Volterra series-based dual-input model for power amplifiers (PAs), which is capable of considering the joint effects of PA nonlinearity, antenna crosstalk, and mismatch for wideband modulated signals. By combining multiple instances of the PA model with linear dynamic antenna simulations, we develop the analysis technique. The proposed method allows the prediction of the output signal of every antenna in an arbitrarily sized TX array, as well as the total far-field radiated wave of the TX for any input signal with low computational effort. A 2.12-GHz four-element TX demonstrator based on GaAs PAs is implemented to verify simulation results with measurements. The proposed technique is a powerful tool to study hardware characteristics as, for example, the effects of antenna design and element spacing. This paper derives a novel continuum of Doherty power amplifier (PA) solutions with enhanced load modulation over an extended RF bandwidth. It is analytically shown that Doherty PAs with efficiency peaks at maximum power and at an arbitrary back-off level can be achieved with numerous configurations of output power combiner. Generalized governing equations for carrier and peaking transistor current ratios, voltage profiles, and biasing conditions are derived in order to assess the performance of any Doherty amplifier configuration. The generalization demonstrates the impact of the selection of the output combiner on PA performance and highlights the tradeoffs between the different solutions. A wideband Doherty PA was designed based on the proposed methodology and implemented using packaged gallium nitride transistors. Over the frequency band of 0.55–1.10 GHz, the Doherty PA exhibited drain efficiency in excess of 40% and 56% at 6-dB output power back-off (OPBO) and peak power, respectively. A new biasing scheme is proposed for transistors used in power-amplifier applications. In the proposed biasing scheme, a constant current source is used as the power supply for the transistor’s output terminal. A whole new family of amplifier classes can be defined using this biasing scheme. Analytical equations are obtained and verified for current and voltage waveforms of a current-biased transistor for both resistive and tuned load impedances. Using the proposed current biasing scheme, the transistor presents completely different behaviors compared with the conventional voltage biasing scheme. These properties can be utilized for new design concepts and can provide new possibilities in the future designs and applications. Some of the differences between current-biased and voltage-biased amplifiers are discussed. One of the different behaviors shown by the current-biased transistor amplifiers is the reversed load modulation. Using this property of the current-biased amplifiers, a reversed modulation dual branch (RMDB) amplifier structure is proposed for ultra-wideband high efficiency at power back-off. Due to the reversed load modulation of current-biased transistors, a multibranch amplifier can be implemented to obtain high efficiency at power back-off without the need for an impedance inverter at the output of the current-biased amplifier. By using the proposed amplifier structure, a wideband RMDB amplifier was fabricated and tested exhibiting higher than 37% efficiency for long-term evolution (LTE) signals in 0.8–2.2-GHz bandwidth, which is equivalent to 93% fractional bandwidth. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of very compact and broadband square waveguide bends able to transmit both linear and circular polarizations. A careful control of the bend profile for dual-linear polarization or the use of a new septum-polarizer-like geometry for dual-circular polarization allows to reach full band operation ~34% in the first case and broadband operation ~20% for the second application. Three novel wideband balanced-to-unbalanced filtering power dividers based on coupled lines are proposed in this paper. Multifunctional power dividers can replace various cascaded single devices to decrease integration mismatching loss and circuit size. The wideband response can be easily realized by the coupled lines structures. To further improve the differential-mode passband selectivity, open/shorted coupled lines and half-wavelength open stubs are applied to introduce two transmission zeros near the passband, respectively. In addition, a resistor in the middle of two single-ended ports can be used to realize isolation between out ports. To verify the proposed concepts, three prototypes of wideband balanced-to-unbalanced filtering power dividers operating at 2 GHz are designed and fabricated with the 4-dB differential-mode bandwidths of 80.5%, 71.5%, and 80%. In this paper, a new class of wideband phase shifters on multimode resonator is proposed and developed. Compared with its conventional counterparts, these new phase shifters have a few advantageous features such as simple structure, intrinsic wideband characteristic, large phase-shift value, and easy adjustment in phase shift. The phase properties of multimode resonator are at first studied to derive the quantitative relationship between the phase slope and their respective resonant frequencies. On the one hand, a prescribed wideband phase shift can be achieved by adjusting the impedance ratio Rz of the multimode resonator and the electrical length of the reference line. On the other hand, the wide operating band can be intrinsically obtained over a frequency range covered by multiple resonant frequencies in the multimode resonator. In this context, the transmission-line models of the proposed phase shifters are deduced and synthesized to design these phase shifters with a prescribed phase shift value and return loss within the operating band. Moreover, the synthesized model can be directly mapped into all the physical dimensions, thus allowing for a quick design process. This paper reports on the design, fabrication, and characterization of a new class of wideband liquid RE micro-electromechanical-system reflective and absorptive switches. A number of different liquids are considered, including mercury, Galinstan, and ultrapure and ionic water. We first briefly review the performance of liquid-metal switches made by mercury and Galinstan. Such switches demonstrate excellent off-state insertion loss of less than 1.3 dB up to 100 GHz (the loss includes a 1500-μm-long line) and on-state isolation of better than 20 dB from 20 to 100 GHz. The main part of this paper, however, focuses on significantly transforming these designs to actually absorb and not reflect the incident power in their on-state, while at the same time maintaining their excellent off-state performance. Absorptive behavior is particularly important for high-power applications. Simpler materials such as water are proven to be very effective for wideband absorptive switches. In particular, three classes of water-based absorptive switches are discussed depending on the level of the signal coupling to water. At 10-40 GHz, the optimal design exhibits off-state insertion loss of less than 1.3 dB, on- and off-state return loss of less than 10 dB, and on-state isolation of 27.5-dB isolation at 40 GHz. This paper reports a new measurement method for wideband radiofrequency power amplifier (PA) characterization and digital predistortion. The proposed measurement procedure significantly relaxes the sampling rate requirement on the analog-to-digital converters of the feedback path. Successful PA linearizations were achieved in the presence of 20, 40, and 60-MHz LTE-A signals using a vector signal analyzer with sampling speeds equal to only 24, 40.96, and 61.44 Ms/s, respectively. Despite these very low sampling rates, a quasiperfect cancellation of the PA distortions was achieved (more than 50 dBc in terms of ACLR), in all tests, over bandwidths including up to fifth-order intermodulation distortions. This paper presents a methodology for the design of Ka/Q-band monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) high-power amplifiers (HPAs). Design techniques are introduced to reduce chip area and to improve bandwidth (BW). These techniques are applied to the design of a 31–39-GHz 5-W HPA implemented on a \text 0.1-\mu \text m AlGaAs-InGaAs pseudomorphic HEMT (pHEMT) technology. With chip dimensions of ${{3.35}}\times {{3.2}}~{\text {mm}}^{2} , the HPA achieves 24% average power-added efficiency (PAE) over the frequency band, while maintaining an average 22-dB small-signal gain. A balanced high-power amplifier (BPA) is also presented, which combines the power of two 5-W HPA cells to deliver peak 8.5-W output power ( P\mathrm {out}) in the frequency band of 30–38 GHz. This paper presents a general sequentially coupled wideband bandpass filter and its direct synthesis and design theory. The filter can achieve the same number of controllable transmission zeros (TZs) as that of resonators above the passband. Each resonator consists of a pair of shunt connected capacitively loaded stub and a grounded inductive stub. Resonators are connected through a short section of transmission line with designated electric length. The short connecting lines allow the filter a wide spurious free stopband. For given specifications and prescribed TZs, the elementary lumped element circuit model can be directly synthesized. Three basic lumped element circuit building blocks are approximated by legitimate distributed element circuits with which the wideband distributed element circuit can be systematically obtained. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed filter configuration and the effectiveness of the developed theory, a fourth and an eighth order of filter prototypes were designed and measured, showing the promising potential for practical applications. In this paper, a wideband RF power amplifier (PA) linearization technique based on the addition of a linearization amplifier (LA) is proposed. The technique is suitable for low-powered and low-cost small cell and fifth-generation (5G) large-scale multi-antenna PA designs since its power and cost overhead does not increase with the input signal bandwidth and because they are scalable with the power range and cost of the PA. In-depth analysis of the proposed technique is provided and its linearization improvement mechanisms are described. As a proof of concept, a prototype LA was designed and fabricated to linearize a broadband 6-W class-AB PA with a center frequency of 850 MHz. When stimulated by a wideband 40-MHz signal, the PA’s adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) was improved by up to 13 dB after the addition of the LA. This enabled the PA to achieve an ACLR of about −45 dBc without the use of any other linearization techniques. This paper presents a wideband fractional- N frequency synthesizer design with a low-effort adaptive calibration technique for \Sigma \Delta quantization noise cancellation. After adopting from the classical single-ended loop filter structure, this least mean square algorithm based calibration technique can precisely and efficiently adjust the noise cancellation digital–analog convertor current with high linearity and immunity. Besides, as long as the desired current is achieved, the calibration circuits are turned off and disconnected to save the power consumption and isolate from the signal paths. With the proposed phase-noise cancellation technique, small area and low power circuit design are achieved, meanwhile the fractional and reference spurs are highly attenuated, allowing the wideband direct frequency/phase modulation with high data rates. The state-of-the-art phased array-based digital beamforming systems suffer from disadvantages of high power consumption, high cost, and system complexity due to the massive use of transmitter/receiver (T/R) modules and high-speed digital and digital–analog mixed devices. In this paper, we point out that by proposing a new concept “complex domain” radio frequency (RF) frontend, the relatively slowly changed waveform delay information required to accomplish adaptive beamforming can be separated from wideband RF signals, based on which a self-contained beamforming system can be implemented with a low-speed baseband. By introducing vector RF multipliers in the proposed frontend, the amplitude and phase of RF signals can be simultaneously controlled by the real and imaginary parts of complex numbers, such that beamforming algorithms derived in complex domain can be directly applied without any form of transformation. By doing so, the massive use of conventional T/R modules and high-speed baseband devices can be avoided. Theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration based on commercial components have validated the proposed approach. Our method is able to significantly simplify the realization and decrease the cost of wideband digital beamforming systems, and can be widely used in low cost, power efficient beamforming applications. This paper presents a highly symmetric 1\! :\! n concentric vortical transformer (CVT) technology, which can be implemented with slab inductors. The CVT and several widely used planar transformer structures are analyzed to show the characteristic distinction of the CVT. The proposed CVT was developed in an integrated passive device technology along with the popular distributed active transformer (DAT) for comparison. Under the same real-part impedance transformation ratio at 2.4 GHz, the outer diameter of the CVT is only 48% of the DAT. Moreover, 89.4% transformation efficiency and 191% - \1-dB fractional bandwidth are achieved by the CVT from a high coupling coefficient of 0.9. The symmetric nature of the CVT makes it capable of achieving far less variation than the DAT in resistance and reactance among multiple input ports when used for power combining. A reactance-compensation technique has been introduced recently for the design of wideband class-E power amplifiers (PAs). With this technique, the load resistance can be transformed to an optimal complex drain impedance in a broad frequency band. One potential problem of this technique is that an additional network is often needed to transform 50 \Omega to the optimum load resistance, which is typically at a lower value. This paper proposes a method to improve the reactance compensation technique. By using the proposed method, the required low-value load resistance is up to four times the original value. This is achieved not by adding more components, but by simply changing the order and values of them. With the proposed method, the additional resistance matching network is no longer needed in many cases, or can be significantly simplified in other cases. To validate the theory, two broadband class-E amplifiers were designed using the original technique and the proposed method, respectively. The performances of the two amplifiers are compared. By using similar complexity of matching networks, the PA designed using the original method can achieve better than 70% power-added efficiency for a fractional bandwidth of 42%. The PA designed using the proposed method can achieve above 70% efficiency for a bandwidth of 51%. The proposed method can be used in the design of many other types of amplifiers. Two new wideband in-phase and out-of-phase balanced power dividing/combining networks are proposed in this paper. Based on matrix transformation, the differential-mode and common-mode equivalent circuits of the two wideband in-phase and out-of-phase networks can be easily deduced. A patterned ground-plane technique is used to realize the strong coupling of the shorted coupled lines for the differential mode. Two planar wideband in-phase and out-of-phase balanced networks with bandwidths of 55.3% and 64.4% (\vert S{ dd21,31}\vert<4\ {\ {dB}}) for the differential mode with wideband common-mode suppression are designed and fabricated. In this paper, we propose a design method of multi-way combining networks with impedance transformation for millimeter-wave (MMW) power amplifiers (PAs) to achieve high output power and wideband performance simultaneously in millimeter-wave frequency. Based on the proposed methodology, three power amplifiers are designed and fabricated in V-band, W-band, and D-band using 65-nm CMOS technology. With 1.2-V supply, the saturation powers of these power amplifiers are 23.2 dBm, 18 dBm and 13.2 dBm at 64 GHz, 90 GHz, and 140 GHz, with 25.1-GHz, 26-GHz, and 30-GHz 3-dB bandwidth, respectively. Compared with the published MMW amplifiers, these PAs achieve high output power and wide band performances simultaneously, and the ouput power levels is the state-of-the-art performance at these frequencies. This paper presents a new class of dual-, tri- and quad-band BPF by using proposed open stub-loaded shorted stepped-impedance resonator (OSLSSIR). The OSLSSIR consists of a two-end-shorted three-section stepped-impedance resistor (SIR) with two identical open stubs loaded at its impedance junctions. Two 50-\Omega tapped lines are directly connected to two shorted sections of the SIR to serve as I/O ports. As the electrical lengths of two identical open stubs increase, many more transmission poles (TPs) and transmission zeros (TZs) can be shifted or excited within the interested frequency range. The TZs introduced by open stubs divide the TPs into multiple groups, which can be applied to design a multiple-band bandpass filter (BPF). In order to increase many more design freedoms for tuning filter performance, a high-impedance open stub and the narrow/broad side coupling are introduced as perturbations in all filters design, which can tune the even- and odd-mode TPs separately. In addition, two branches of I/O coupling and open stub-loaded shorted microstrip line are employed in tri- and quad-band BPF design. As examples, two dual-wideband BPFs, one tri-band BPF, and one quad-band BPF have been successfully developed. The fabricated four BPFs have merits of compact sizes, low insertion losses, and high band-to-band isolations. The measured results are in good agreement with the full-wave simulated results. This paper proposes a multistage transformer-feedback-based design approach for a high fractional-bandwidth (fBW) IF stage in a 60-GHz heterodyne receiver. An in-depth analysis of source-to-gate transformer-feedback amplifiers, including the design of the matching network, is presented. Analytic expressions for the input resistance, quality factor, and noise figure (NF) as a function of the transformer turns-ratio (n) and magnetic coupling factor (k) are derived. To validate the proposed analysis, a wideband IF amplifier and mixer were designed in a 40-nm CMOS process. The continuously increasing demand for wide bandwidth creates great difficulties in employing digital predistortion (DPD) for radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs) in future ultra-wideband systems because the existing DPD system requires multiple times the input signal bandwidth in the transmitter and receiver chain, which is sometimes almost impossible to implement in practice. In this paper, we present a novel band-limited digital predistortion technique in which a band-limiting function is inserted into the general Volterra operators in the DPD model to control the signal bandwidth under modeling, which logically transforms the general Volterra series-based model into a band-limited version. This new approach eliminates the system bandwidth constraints of the conventional DPD techniques, and it allows users to arbitrarily choose the bandwidth to be linearized in the PA output according to the system requirement without sacrificing performance, which makes the DPD system design much more flexible and feasible. In order to validate this idea, a high-power LDMOS Doherty PA excited by various wideband signals, including 100-MHz long-term evolution advanced signals, was tested. Experimental results showed that excellent linearization performance can be obtained by employing the proposed approach. Furthermore, this technique can be applied to other linear-in-parameter models. A novel wideband receiver RF front-end, including a resistive negative feedback wideband low-noise amplifier (LNA) with feedforward noise and distortion cancellation and a current commutating down conversion passive mixer with biquad trans-impedance amplifier, is presented in this paper. In comparison to conventional resistive negative feedback LNAs, theory analysis and experimental results for the proposed LNA circuit shows improved performance parameters, including voltage gain, noise figure (NF), and input-referred third-order intercept point (IIP3), especially helpful for wideband LNA design in modern deep-submicrometer CMOS. A wideband receiver RF front-end fabricated in 0.13-\mu\m CMOS, based on the proposed feedforward noise and distortion-cancellation resistive-feedback LNA, has 42–48-dB conversion gain with 0.8–12-MHz tunable IF -3-dB bandwidth and 12-dB adjacent channel selectivity at 2fp, -14-dBm IIP3, and 3-dB NF double-sideband with 10-kHz flicker-noise corner frequency. A wideband low-noise amplifier (LNA), which is a key block in the design of broadband receivers for multiband wireless communication standards, is presented in this paper. The LNA is a fully differential common-gate structure. It uses multiple feedback paths, which add degrees of freedom in the choice of the LNA transconductance to reduce the noise figure (NF) and increase the amplification. The proposed LNA avoids the use of bulky inductors that leads to area and cost saving. A prototype is implemented in IBM 90-nm CMOS technology. It covers the frequency range of 100 MHz to 1.77 GHz. The core consumes 2.8 mW from a 2-V supply occupying an area of 0.03 \ mm^2. Measurements show a gain of 23 dB with a 3-dB bandwidth of 1.76 GHz. The minimum NF is 1.85 dB, while the average NF is 2 dB across the whole band. This paper presents a new design of wide slot antenna for various wideband applications. The proposed printed antenna consists of a slot and a turning stub, both formed by a binomial curve function; thus, various bandwidths (BWs) can be obtained based on the structure with different binomial curves. Some key parameters affecting the antenna performance have been analyzed and discussed in detail as an antenna design guideline. To validate the theoretical design, six prototypes of various binomial-curved slot antennas were designed, fabricated, and measured. Good agreement between the simulated results and the measured ones is observed. The results demonstrate that the proposed type of antenna can obtain a BW range from 9.8% to 99.7% for VSWR \leq 2 by selecting various binomial-curved slots, which may provide a convenience for various wideband antenna designs. This paper presents a dimensional synthesis method for the design of symmetric wideband waveguide cross-coupled filters without resorting to global full-wave optimization. In this method, we propose two circuit models suitable for the synthesis of wideband cross-coupled filters. Besides, we propose a novel physical realization of the cross-coupled K-inverter in the waveguide filter. As a design example, an X-band four-pole waveguide cross-coupled filter has been designed and fabricated. A dual-band switchable harmonic receiver for downconverting the industrial-scientific-medical and local-multipoint-distribution-service bands at 24 and 31 GHz is proposed in this paper. The front end utilizes a new technique for band selection. Mathematical formulation, including the effect of mismatches, for the new switchable harmonic receiver is provided in this paper. In addition, new circuit techniques for the low-noise amplifier and millimeter-wave mixer implementations are presented. The receiver is implemented using 0.18-\mum BiCMOS technology with a total power consumption of 60 mW. Measurements show a band rejection higher than 43 dB, gain of 21 and 18 dB, NF lower than 8 and 9.5 dB, and third-order intercept point of -18 and -17 dBm for the 24- and 31-GHz frequency bands, respectively. This paper first describes the phenomenon of Gaussian pulse spread due to numerical dispersion in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method for electromagnetic computation. This effect is undesired, as it reduces the precision with which multipath pulses can be resolved in the time domain. The quantification of the pulse spread is thus useful to evaluate the accuracy of pulsed FDTD simulations. Then, using a linear approximation to the numerical phase delay, a formula to predict the pulse duration is developed. Later, this formula is used to design a Gaussian source that keeps the spread of numerical pulses bounded in wideband FDTD. In this paper, a new synthesis and design methodology is presented and applied for the fast and accurate design of inductive rectangular waveguide filters. By using this technique, the dimensions of both homogeneous and inhomogeneous filters can be successfully synthesized for almost any practical filter bandwidth, return loss, or filter order. This novel technique is based on a prototype with additional degrees of freedom, able to match the response of the different filter components in a wideband frequency range, and an elaborated design procedure that fully exploits this flexibility. During the design procedure, the prototype and the real structure are continuously aligned in order to have the same electromagnetic behavior and jointly evolve to obtain an equiripple response. Once the final prototype has been synthesized, excellent filter dimensions can be extracted that, in most cases, do not require further optimization. In this paper, a design technique to match lumped resistors in the dc to 20-GHz band is presented. This technique makes it possible to implement very wideband matched loads with a return loss that is better than 20 dB. The proposed implementation is simple, low cost, and gives superior performance than previously reported alternatives. The technique was developed to match surface-mount resistors soldered on plastic substrates, and was then successfully applied to match trimmed printed resistors on low-temperature co-fired ceramic substrates. A fully scalable and SPICE compatible wideband model of on-chip interconnects valid up to 110 GHz is presented in this paper. The series branches of the proposed multisegment model consist of an RL ladder network to capture the skin and proximity effects, as well as the substrate skin effect. Their values are obtained from a technique based on a modified effective loop inductance approach and complex image method. A CG network is used in the shunt branches of the model, which accounts for capacitive coupling through the oxide and substrate loss due to the electrical field, as well as the impact of dummy metal fills. The values of these elements are determined by analytical and semiempirical formulas. The model is validated by a full-wave electromagnetic field solver, as well as measurements. The simulated S-parameters of the model agree well with the measured S-parameters of on-chip interconnects with different widths and lengths over a wide frequency range from dc up to 110 GHz. In a conventional differential phase shifter (DPS), to realize arbitrary phase shifts, the reference and main microstrip lines are of different lengths. This difference results in suboptimal integration density, which renders the wireless communication system implementation complex and bulky. This paper presents an equal-length multiway DPS based on metamaterials. The reference lines have identical dimensions and are of equal lengths with the main lines. The proposed structure covers a wide bandwidth by aligning the main line phase slope without degradation in return and insertion losses. A design optimization methodology is presented for wideband DPSs in the 0°–90° range. For demonstration, a six-way DPS has been designed and fabricated. The measurements show that the phase shifters have less than 5° differential phase stability and better than a 10-dB return loss, with an insertion loss less than 1.24 dB from 1.6 to 3.2 GHz.
