This article investigates the event-triggered control problem for switched affine systems (SASs). The presence of affine terms brings many difficulties on the exclusion of triggering Zeno behavior when ensuring asymptotic stability. We propose an event-triggered control strategy dynamically updated with triggering to solve this problem, in which the triggering condition is associated with the affine terms and given with a time-varying term that is updated at triggering instants. Based on the triggering strategy, the controllers for subsystems and a switching rule are designed to achieve asymptotic stability of the resulting closed-loop system. Moreover, due to the special feature of event-triggered SASs, a new method for proving the exclusion of Zeno behavior is given. This article investigates the stability of continuous-time switched linear systems with dwell-time constraints. A fresh insight into this established problem is provided via novel stability conditions that require the solution to a family of differential Lyapunov equations and algebraic Lyapunov equations. The proposed analysis, which leads to a peculiar Lyapunov function that is decreasing in between and at switching instants, enjoys the following properties: it achieves the same dwell time as the well-known result in the research “stability and stabilization of continuous time switched linear systems” by Geromel and Colaneri; it removes the increasing computational complexity of the linear interpolation method; it leads to a straightforward counterpart for discrete-time switched linear systems.We show the application of this methodology to the problem of adaptive control of switched linear systems with parametric uncertainties. In this paper, the stability and $L_2$ -gain properties of linear impulsive delay systems with delayed impulses are studied. Commonly employed techniques, in which the delayed impulses are treated using Newton–Leibniz formula, may not be applicable to $L_2$ -gain analysis, since they make the disturbance input appear in the impulse part. In order to circumvent the difficulty, we first augment the considered system to a time-delay system with switching nondelayed impulses. Due to the absence of delayed impulses, this new approach has advantages in constructing Lyapunov functions and handling the effects of impulse delays on the system performance. Switching-based time-dependent Lyapunov functions are introduced to deal with the resultant switching impulses of the augmented system. Sufficient conditions for exponential stability and $L_2$ -gain properties are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities. We present a direct approach to study the stability of discrete-time switched linear systems that can be applied to arbitrary switching, as well as when switching is constrained by a switching automaton. We explore the tree of possible matrix products, by pruning the subtrees rooted at contractions and looking for unstable repeatable products. Generically, this simple strategy either terminates with all contracting leafs—showing the system's asymptotic stability—or finds the shortest unstable and repeatable matrix product. Although it behaves in the worst case as the exhaustive search, we show that its performance is greatly enhanced by measuring contractiveness w.r.t. sum-of-squares polynomial norms, optimized to minimize the largest expansion among the system's modes. In this note, a novel conception called virtual clock, which is defined by an artificial timer over a finite cycle, is introduced for stability analysis of discrete-time switched linear systems under minimum dwell-time constraint. Two necessary and sufficient conditions associated with a virtual clock with a sufficient length are proposed to ensure the global uniform asymptotic stability of discrete-time switched linear systems. For the two nonconservative stability criteria, the lifted version maintains the convexity in system matrices. Based on the lifted convex conditions, the extensions to $\ell _2$ -gain computation and $\mathcal {H}_\infty$ control problems are presented in the sequel. In particular, a novel virtual-clock-dependent controller is designed, which outperforms the traditional mode-dependent and common gain controllers. Inspired by the idea of multiple Lyapunov functions ($\mathtt {MLFs}$), we use piecewise continuous scalar functions to investigate the stabilizability of time-varying switched systems. Starting with time-varying switched linear systems, we first combine the idea of $\mathtt {MLFs}$ with the existence of asymptotically (exponentially, uniformly exponentially) stable functions to provide necessary and sufficient conditions for their asymptotic (exponential, uniform exponential) stabilizability. Compared to traditional differential Lyapunov inequalities, we release the requirement on negative definiteness of the derivatives of $\mathtt {MLFs}$. Successively, the above results are extended to time-varying switched nonlinear systems. Then, two illustrative examples are given to show the applicability of our theoretical results. We study feedback control for a discrete-time integrator with unitary delay in the presence of quantization both in the control action and in the measurement of the controlled variable. In some applications the quantization effects can be neglected, but when high precision is needed, they have to be explicitly accounted for in control design. In this paper, we propose a switched control solution for minimizing the effect of quantization of both the control and controlled variables for the considered system, that is quite common in the computing systems domain, for example, in thread scheduling, clock synchronization, and resource allocation. We show that the switched solution outperforms the one without switching, designed by neglecting quantization, and analyze necessary and sufficient conditions for the controlled system to exhibit periodic solutions in the presence of an additive constant disturbance affecting the control input. In this note, we study the stabilization problem of positive switched linear system (PSLS) with disturbance. By introducing a class of weak common linear copositive Lyapunov functions, we design time-dependent switching rules under which the system is asymptotically stable. Both continuous-time and discrete-time PSLS are taken into consideration, and the obtained results are also extended to nonpositive switched systems. This technical note establishes a novel result for adaptive asymptotic tracking control of uncertain switched linear systems. The result exploits a recently proposed stability condition for switched systems. In particular, a time-varying positive definite Lyapunov function is used to develop a novel piecewise continuous model-reference adaptive law and a dwell-time switching law. In contrast with previous research, where asymptotic tracking was possible only in the presence of a common Lyapunov function for the reference models, in this work asymptotic tracking is shown in a more general setting. Additionally, in the presence of persistence of excitation, the controller parameter estimation errors will converge to zero asymptotically. The main contribution of this work consists in establishing a symmetry between adaptive control of classical non-switched linear systems and adaptive control of switched linear systems. This paper introduces the notion of common zeroing-output systems (CZOS) to analyze the stability of switched systems. The concept of CZOS allows one to verify weak zero-state detectability. It characterizes a common behavior of any individual subsystem when the output signal for each subsystem is “approaching” zero. Heuristically speaking, it removes the effect of switching behavior, and thus enables one to analyze stability properties in systems with complex switching signals. With the help of CZOS, the Krasovskii–LaSalle theorem can be extended to switched nonlinear time-varying systems with both arbitrary switching and more general restricted switching cases. For switched nonlinear time-invariant systems, the needed detectability condition is further simplified, leading to several new stability results. Particularly, when a switched linear time-invariant system is considered, it is possible to generate a recursive method, which combines a Krasovskii–LaSalle result and a nested Matrosov result, to find a CZOS if it exists. We show that existence of a global polynomial Lyapunov function for a homogeneous polynomial vector field or a planar polynomial vector field (under a mild condition) implies existence of a polynomial Lyapunov function that is a sum of squares (sos) and that the negative of its derivative is also a sum of squares. This result is extended to show that such sos-based certificates of stability are guaranteed to exist for all stable switched linear systems. For this class of systems, we further show that if the derivative inequality of the Lyapunov function has an sos certificate, then the Lyapunov function itself is automatically a sum of squares. These converse results establish cases where semidefinite programming is guaranteed to succeed in finding proofs of Lyapunov inequalities. Finally, we demonstrate some merits of replacing the sos requirement on a polynomial Lyapunov function with an sos requirement on its top homogeneous component. This technical note focuses on stability analysis and control design of switched affine systems in discrete-time domain. The stability conditions are obtained by taking into account that the system trajectories, governed by a certain switching function, converge to a set of attraction \boldsymbol\mathcal V containing a desired equilibrium point. These conditions follow from the adoption of a general quadratic Lyapunov function whose time variation is bounded above by a concave-convex function with center determined by minimax theory. Our main contribution is to provide a stabilizing state feedback switching function and an invariant set of attraction \boldsymbol\mathcal V_* with minimum volume as far as this class of quadratic Lyapunov functions is adopted. In this work, we study the stability of an autonomous discrete-time linear switched system whose switching sequences are generated by a Muller automaton. This system arises in various engineering problems such as distributed communication and automotive engine control. The asymptotic stability of this system, referred to as regular asymptotic stability (RAS), generalizes two well-known definitions of stability of autonomous discrete-time linear switched systems, namely absolute asymptotic stability (AAS) and shuffle asymptotic stability (SAS). We also extend these stability definitions to robust versions. We show that absolute asymptotic stability, robust absolute asymptotic stability and robust shuffle asymptotic stability are equivalent to exponential stability. In addition, by using the Kronecker product, we prove that a robust regular asymptotic stability problem is equivalent to the conjunction of several robust absolute asymptotic stability problems. This article investigates the stability of positive switched linear systems. We start from motivating examples and focus on the case when each switched subsystem is marginally stable (in the sense that all the eigenvalues of the subsystem matrix are in the closed left-half plane with those on the imaginary axis simple) instead of asymptotically stable. A weak excitation condition is first proposed such that the considered positive switched linear system is exponentially stable. An extension to the case without dwell time assumption is also presented. Then, we study the influence of time-varying delay on the stability of the considered positive switched linear system. We show that the proposed weak excitation condition for the delay-free case is also sufficient for the asymptotic stability of the positive switched linear system under unbounded time-varying delay. In addition, it is shown that the convergence rate is exponential if there exists an upper bound for the delay, irrespective of the magnitude of this bound. This work proposes a model predictive control (MPC) approach for a switching linear system where the switching signal is prescribed with unknown future values. The switching signal is known only at its current value, satisfies a minimal dwell-time restriction of $\tau$ steps between successive switchings and is otherwise arbitrary. Under such a setting, the MPC optimization problem has to allow for all admissible switching sequences within a given horizon length. Such a formulation necessitates several other features: the use of a modified returnable set as the terminal constraint; the introduction of consistency constraints on the predicted controls; a min-max optimization criterion as the cost function; the splitting of the horizon into two portions for recursive feasibility consideration and exponential stability of the closed-loop system. In this technical note, a necessary and sufficient stability criterion for switched linear systems under dwell-time constraint is proposed by employing a class of time-scheduled homogeneous polynomial Lyapunov functions with a sufficiently large degree. The key feature of this nonconservative condition lies in its convexity in the system matrices, which explicitly facilitates its further extension to uncertain systems. Then, in order to obtain numerically testable condition, a family of LMI conditions are presented with the aid of the idea of dividing the dwell-time interval into a finite number of segments. It is proved that the non-conservativeness can be maintained with a sufficiently large interval dividing parameter. In the end, the result is straightforwardly extended to the uncertain case in virtue of the convexity in the system matrices. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate our findings. In this note, the stabilization problem for a class of discrete-time switched linear systems with additive disturbances is investigated. The considered switching signals are of mode-dependent persistent dwell-time (MPDT) property and the disturbances are assumed to be amplitude-bounded. By constructing a quasi-time-varying (QTV) Lyapunov function, a QTV stabilizing controller is designed for the nominal system such that the resulting closed-loop system is globally uniformly asymptotically stable. In the presence of bounded additive disturbances, a MPDT robust positive invariant set is determined for the error system between the nominal system and disturbed system. A concept of generalized robust positive invariant (GRPI) set under admissible MPDT switching is further proposed for the error system. It is demonstrated that the disturbed system is also asymptotically stable in the sense of converging to the MPDT GRPI set that can be regarded as the cross section of a uniform tube of the disturbed system. We investigate the stabilizability of switched linear systems of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs). For such systems we introduce a parameterized family of switched ordinary differential equations that approximate the dynamic behavior of the switched DAE. A necessary and sufficient criterion for the stabilizability of a switched DAE system using time-dependent switching is obtained in terms of these parameterized approximations. Furthermore, we provide conditions for the stabilizability of switched DAEs via fast switching as well as using solely the consistency projectors of the constituent systems. This article deals with stability of continuous-time switched systems under constrained switching. Given a family of systems, possibly containing unstable dynamics, we characterize a new class of switching signals under which the switched system generated by it and the family of systems is globally asymptotically stable. Our characterization of such stabilizing switching signals involves the asymptotic frequency of switching, the asymptotic fraction of activation of the constituent systems, and the asymptotic densities of admissible transitions among them. In this technical note, the problem of switching stabilization for slowly switched linear systems is investigated. In particular, the considered systems can be composed of all unstable subsystems. Based on the invariant subspace theory, the switching signal with mode-dependent average dwell time (MDADT) property is designed to exponentially stabilize the underlying system. Furthermore, sufficient condition of stabilization for switched systems with all stable subsystems under MDADT switching is also given. Switched linear hyperbolic partial differential equations are considered in this technical note. They model infinite dimensional systems of conservation laws and balance laws, which are potentially affected by a distributed source or sink term. The dynamics and the boundary conditions are subject to abrupt changes given by a switching signal, modeled as a piecewise constant function and possibly a dwell time. By means of Lyapunov techniques some sufficient conditions are obtained for the exponential stability of the switching system, uniformly for all switching signals. Different cases are considered with or without a dwell time assumption on the switching signals, and on the number of positive characteristic velocities (which may also depend on the switching signal). This paper is concerned with the derivation of a model reference adaptive control (MRAC) scheme for multimodal piecewise-affine (PWA) and piecewise-linear systems. The control allows the plant to track asymptotically the states of a multimodal piecewise affine (or smooth) reference model. The reference model can be characterized by a number and geometry of phase space regions that can be entirely different from those of the plant. This note is concerned with the stability of planar linear singularly perturbed switched systems. We propose a characterization of the stability properties of such multiple time scale switched systems as the perturbation parameter goes to zero. We also study transitions as this parameter varies and we restrict their number and nature. In this paper, we first establish a stability result for a class of linear switched systems involving Kronecker product. The problem is interesting in that the system matrix does not have to be Hurwitz at any time instant. This class of linear switched systems arises in the control of multi-agent systems under switching network topology. As applications of this stability result, we give the solvability conditions for both the leaderless consensus problem and the leader-following consensus problem for general marginally stable linear multi-agent systems under switching network topology. In this paper we consider the class of discrete-time switched systems switching between p autonomous positive subsystems. First, sufficient conditions for testing stability, based on the existence of special classes of common Lyapunov functions, are investigated, and these conditions are mutually related, thus proving that if a linear copositive common Lyapunov function can be found, then a quadratic positive definite common function can be found, too, and this latter, in turn, ensures the existence of a quadratic copositive common function. Secondly, stabilizability is introduced and characterized. It is shown that if these systems are stabilizable, they can be stabilized by means of a periodic switching sequence, which asymptotically drives to zero every positive initial state. Conditions for the existence of state-dependent stabilizing switching laws, based on the values of a copositive (linear/quadratic) Lyapunov function, are investigated and mutually related, too. Nonlinear controlled systems at multiple operating points are modeled as piecewise linear systems, where changes in operating points are modeled as switches between constituent linearized systems. This note studies the adaptive state feedback for state tracking control problem for such systems. Piecewise linear reference model systems are used for generating desired state trajectories and their stability properties are studied. Adaptive state feedback control schemes are developed, and their stability and tracking performance are analyzed and evaluated by simulation examples. This technical note addresses the stability problem of delayed positive switched linear systems whose subsystems are all positive. Both discrete-time systems and continuous-time systems are studied. In our analysis, the delays in systems can be unbounded. Under certain conditions, several stability results are established by constructing a sequence of functions that are positive, monotonically decreasing, and convergent to zero as time tends to infinity (additionally continuous for continuous-time systems). It turns out that these functions can serve as an upper bound of the systems' trajectories starting from a particular region. Sufficient conditions are given for the stability of linear switched systems with dwell time and with polytopic type parameter uncertainty. A Lyapunov function, in quadratic form, which is non-increasing at the switching instants is assigned to each subsystem. During the dwell time, this function varies piecewise linearly in time after switching occurs. It becomes time invariant afterwards. This function leads to asymptotic stability conditions for the nominal set of subsystems that can be readily extended to the case where these subsystems suffer from polytopic type parameter uncertainties. The main goal of this technical note is to present a new sufficient condition for the stability of switched positive linear systems. This condition is general in two senses. First of all, because it applies to switching systems of order n composed of k subsystems, for any n and k. Secondly, because it applies to both discrete- and continuous-time systems. Furthermore, it is easy to verify, as it amounts to check for the stability of a certain matrix. The new condition is derived from a multidimensional system analysis, where the relation between the stability of multidimensional and switched systems is investigated. A comparison with other existing tests is also presented, showing that the one proposed here allows to infer about the stability of a system in cases where other tests fail or do not apply at all. We address stability of state feedback switched linear systems in which delays are present in both the feedback state and the switching signal of the switched controller. For switched systems with average dwell-time switching signals, we provide a condition, in terms of upper bounds on the delays and in terms of a lower bound on the average dwell-time, to guarantee asymptotic stability of the closed loop. The condition also implies that, in general, feedback switched linear systems are robust with respect to both small state delays and small switching delays. Our approach combines existing multiple Lyapunov function techniques with the merging switching signal technique, which gives relationships between the average dwell times of two mismatched switching signals and their mismatched times.
