Abstract: The microturbine based Distributed Generation (DG) system are becoming the popular source of power industries due to their fuel flexibility, reliability and power quality. The microturbine generation (MTG) system is a complicated thermodynamic electromechanical system with a high speed of rotation, frequency conversion and its control strategy. In spite of several techniques to control high speed of microturbine is not accurate and reliable due to their anti-interference problem. To resolve the anti-interfacing problem, this paper investigates the fuzzy logic based speed governor for a MTG system as an alternative to nominal PI or lead-lag based controller. The development of fuzzy logic based speed governor includes input and output membership function with their respective members. The load variation on MTG system is performed using conventional and fuzzy logic controller, implemented in Matlab/simulink and results are compared with each other. The simulation result shows that, the performance improvement of fuzzy logic governor over a nominal governor based MTG system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Centre of gravity (CG) is one of the significant parameters of vehicle mass property related to vehicle handling. Position of CG in each direction (longitudinal, lateral and vertical) affects stability of the vehicle eventually. Change in CG position depends on different architectural arrangements of drive train and sub-systems which affect mass distribution of the vehicle. Being zero-emission technology, rapid commercialization of electric vehicle (EV) requires more emphasis on production of new automobiles and retrofitting as well. In case of retrofitting, placement of all EV drive train and other sub-systems requires both static and dynamic analysis for change in CG position due to different mass distributions. In this paper, analysis has been conducted by MATLAB SIMULINK based vehicle model to demonstrate effect of CG in vehicle maneuvering. Outcome of this investigation indicates the evaluation of different retrofitted EV architectures considering different mass distributions under the constraint of vehicle mass and dimension. This study evaluates vehicle performance with different architectures to ensure safe handling and stability in both normal and sudden maneuvering conditions of the vehicle. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The AC-DC rectification has been accomplished by an uncontrollable diode rectifier or a line commutated phase controlled Thyristor Bridge. Both these converters offer a high reliability and simple structure they also have major inherent drawbacks. By controlling the firing angle, the DC voltage of the Thyristor Bridge can be regulated. Also power flow from the DC side to the AC side is possible, but because the polarity of the DC voltage must be reversed for this to occur. As a result, pulse width-modulated (PWM) rectifiers have been of particular interest and they have become attractive especially in industrial variable-speed drive applications in the power range from a couple of kilowatts up to several megawatts. This paper aims at the simulation study and analysis of Space Vector Modulation (SVM) and Direct Power Control (DPC) of three-phase AC-DC converter under various load conditions. Abstract: In this paper, we propose an autonomous Smart Grid operation by using multi-agent approach. The proposed multiagent system consists of five types of agent: single Smart Grid controller agent (SGC), several Load agents (LAGs), several green power generation agents (GPAGs), several gas-turbines agents (GTAGs), and several battery agents (BAGs). In a Smart Grid, LAGs act as consumers or buyers, GPAGs and GTAGs act as producers or sellers, and BAGs act as prosumers or sellers/buyers. In order to verify the performance of the proposed method, it applied to a simple model system with different electrical power rates (peak rate and off-peak rate). From the simulation results, it can be seen the proposed multiagent system could perform the Smart Grid operation efficiently. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A computational study to assess the performance of different gas turbine plants is presented in this paper. The work includes the effect of relative humidity, ambient inlet air temperature and types of fuels on gas turbine plants. Investigation also covers economic analysis and effect of fuels on emissions. Gas turbine frames of various ratings are used in gas turbine power plants in Saudi Arabia. 70 MWe GE-6101FA and 40 MWe GE-6561B frames are selected for the present study. GT PRO software has been used for carrying out the analysis including; net plant output and net efficiency, break even electricity price, break even fuel LHV price, carbon emissions etc., for a given location of Saudi Arabia. The relative humidity and ambient inlet air temperature have been varied from 30 to 45% and from 80 to 100° F, respectively. Fuels considered are natural gas, diesel and heavy bunker oil. Simulated gas turbine plant output from GT PRO has been validated against an existing gas turbine plant output. It has been observed the simulated plant output is less than the existing gas turbine plant output by 5%. Results show that variation of relative humidity does not affect the gas turbine performance appreciably for all types of fuels. For 70 MWe frame, for a decrease of ambient inlet air temperature by 10°F, plant net output and efficiency have been found to increase by about 5 and 2%, respectively for all fuels. More specifically, plant net output and efficiency for natural gas are higher as compare to other fuels. For given 70 and 40 MWe frames, break even fuel price and electricity price have been found to vary from 2.03 to 2.54 US$/MMBTU and from 0.021 to 0.0254 US$/kWh respectively. It has been noticed that turbines operating on natural gas emit less carbon relatively as compared to other fuels. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Power Conditioning System (PCS) in the photovoltaic system requires reliable islanding detection function (passive or active) in order to know electrical grid status and operate the grid connected inverter properly. This paper proposes a passive islanding detection algorithm based on the grid harmonic components. It utilizes the fact that the equivalent harmonic components at the point of common coupling (PCC) are changed according to the grid connection status. This method shows reduced Non-Detection Zone (NDZ) and fast detection time compared to the conventional approach. The mathematical modeling is performed and verified by experimental result using high performance DSP controller [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Nowadays, distributed generations (DGs) have taken a special role in power systems. Distributed generations have received significant attention as a means to improve the performance of the electrical power system, provide low cost energy, and increase overall energy efficiency. A problem with such generators is the unwanted islanding phenomenon. Islanding detection an important and challenging issue to power engineers. Several methods based on passive and active detection scheme have been proposed in the literature. While passive schemes have a large non detection zone (_DZ), concern has been raised on active method due to its degrading power quality effect. In this paper, a new technique to detect islanding conditions has been proposed for micro turbine (MT) as distributed generation. The performance of the proposed method based on passive methods is much more appropriate than that of previous methods. The simulation results performed in Simulink-MATLAB, clearly show improved operation of this method. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this study is presented a thermodynamic analysis of a cascade refrigeration system using as refrigerant carbon dioxide in low-temperature circuit and ammonia in high-temperature circuit. The operating parameters considered in this paper include condensing, evaporating, superheating and subcooling temperatures in the ammonia (R717) hightemperature circuit and in the carbon dioxide (R744) low-temperature circuit. Diagrams of COP versus operating parameters have been obtained. In addition, values for R744-R717 cascade refrigeration system are compared with the values obtained for a partial injection two-stage refrigeration system using the synthetic refrigerant R404A, a nearly azeotropic blend, specially used for commercial refrigeration. Results show that a carbon dioxide-ammonia cascade refrigeration system is an interesting alternative to R404A two-stage refrigeration system for low evaporating temperatures (–30°C ÷ –50°C) in commercial refrigeration for energy, security and environmental reasons. Abstract: The European Regulation no 2037/2000 has banned manufacturing HCFC refrigerants from January 1st 2010, although its use is allowed up to 2015 if the fluids come from a recycling process. This situation creates the need for developing new working fluids to replace the HCFC in the refrigeration plants now in operation. Among all the HCFCs the R22 is the most widely used in a wide range of applications, especially in air conditioning. This paper presents the results of an experimental analysis comparing the performance of a vapour compression refrigerating unit operating with R22, and its performance in comparison to some HFCs fluids, substituting the former. In particular, the plant working efficiency was first tested with R22 and then with three HFC fluids: R417A, R407C and R404A. The investigation verified that the performance with HFCs refrigerants did not result as efficient as when using R22 [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: FP-Growth is a recursive mining algorithm for frequent patterns. With each recursion, a new FP-tree and the corresponding header table are built. This paper proposes another approach to improve the mining efficiency: only one FP-tree is constructed, and instead of building new trees in every recursion, builds new header tables; frequent patterns are generated along the way, so we call this algorithm “header table recursion (HTR)” method. Tests show that it will get better performance for relative small datasets because the compress of the FP-tree has no significant impact on the performance yet inflicts extra time cost in tree creation operations. However on larger datasets, the traversal of the original FP-tree will become more time-consuming and its overall performance needs further testing. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Contourlet transform has better performance in directional information representation than wavelet transform and has been studied by many researchers in retrieval systems and has been shown that it is superior to wavelet ones at retrieval rate. In order to improve the retrieval rate further, a contourlet transform based texture image retrieval system was proposed in this paper. In the system, absolute mean sub-bands energy, standard deviations and kurtosis in contourlet domain were cascaded to form feature vectors, and the similarity metric was Canberra distance. Experimental results show that this contourlet transform based image retrieval system is superior to that of the contourlet transform with absolute mean sub-bands energy and standard deviations features widely used today under the same system structure. Abstract: The biggest problem of developing automatic collection software for enterprise and business registration information doesn’t lie in implementing its function but in improving its performance, for the software has to generate a commercial registration number consisting of 14 figures ontology yards and one digital-collecting code, whose computational load reaches 10 to the 14th power. To improve the performance, the design first applies XML technology and HtmlSelect to arrange interface skillfully. Then, it will evaluate its maximum by means of compromise algorithm and skip-continuous judgment. At last, it adopts multithreading asynchronous operation to implement parallel arithmetic and reduce the computational load from the original 10 to the 14th power to the 5th power. Simultaneously, the paper also uses various design patterns such as progress bar, Retry mechanism, increment update, and “one region, one type, one sheet” successively to enhance the usability of the software itself effectively. Abstract: Cooperation diversity allows mobiles share their antennas to achieve uplink transmit diversity. A particularly powerful variation of user cooperation framework is coded cooperation, which partitions the code words of each mobile and transmits portions of each code word through independent fading channels. This paper mainly focuses on coded cooperation, and its improved framework, which is called space-time cooperation, and investigates the application of turbo codes in both frameworks. The analysis and simulation results show that both of the frameworks achieve impressive gains, and space-time cooperation improves the performance of coded cooperation in fast fading. Abstract: Messaging system can be treated as a collection of message channels, ending points, messaging routers, and process management. For a particular application, the implementation style of the underlying messaging system is not unique. However, different approach results in various performance and resource requirements. In this paper, a testing environment is designed to investigate the performance and resource requirements features of various implementation techniques of a message system. The alternative implementation of the message channel, endpoint, routing and process management is organized with the concepts of logical topologies, which present the integration style of a messaging system. The testing experiments are carried along three different topologies: the business process management pipeline, the enterprise service bus, and enterprise service network. The pseudo web service clients and web service providers is implemented to simulate the workload effects of a real environment. From the detailed analysis of the testing results, it is validated that the ESB model provides the most flexible message delivering service with the cost of largest transaction throughput, but consumes the smallest of processor usage and memory occupation. Abstract: Dynamic trustiness evaluation of software has become a hot issue in information security field. In order to improve the accuracy of evaluation, a Trustiness Evaluation Model Based on Software Behavior (TEMSB) is proposed in this paper. TEMSB introduces Software Behavior Trace (SBT) to describe software behavior. SBT consists of operation trace, which is composed by operation sequences of the running software, and function trace depicted by a series of scenes. With the purpose of reducing time and space overheads of trustiness evaluation, we present reduction rules for SBT. In our model, we apply identification evaluation rule and scene evaluation rules to check the practical behavior of software. In particular, we consider a kind of special check points, named as branch points, at which we determine branch directions through scene information. The simulation results indicate the precision and efficiency of TEMSB. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Real-time rendering of complex terrain, which is often used to meet the demand of the high fidelity of the virtual battlefield environments simulation, geographic information system (GIS), virtual reality (VR) and 3D games, has attracted growing interest at home and abroad over the last decades. In this paper, a hybrid terrain rendering algorithm combining multi-resolution terrain rendering and occlusion culling is analyzed, a terrain simulation loop which integrates multi-resolution terrain modeling and terrain occlusion culling based on the least square plane is proposed. The algorithm based on this method not only decreases the number of polygons sending to the graphics rendering pipeline efficiently, but also takes into account of the performance optimization and its extension for dynamic terrain. By implementing the algorithm and analyzing the results from experiments, we conclude that this algorithm is valid and applicable to complex occlusion-intensive terrain rendering system. Abstract: Hierarchical cluster-based architecture is a common type which has some extraordinary performance on energysaving and special applications. However, due to the characteristics of WSNs, such as restricted resources and operation in a hostile environment, WSNs are subjected to numerous threats and attacks. In this paper, we present a hierarchy-based dynamic key management method, a splay tree-based rekey management, to efficiently enhance the network security in LEACH-like protocol and greatly reduce the large number of messages exchanged for key renewals. Abstract: In this paper, we develop a Network-on-Chip (NoC) performance evaluation methodology, which can measure and present the transaction-level communication capacity of the integral network with routers, links and network interfaces (NI). On the basis of analyzing the characteristics of different kinds of transactions, we propose a set of metrics to characterize the exact performance of the network. And to extract these metrics, we build a platform based on the hierarchical progressive abstraction approach, which makes the evaluation environment enjoy the abstraction and automation functions. The platform, which can communicate with NIs according to certain bus protocol, is applicable to networks with arbitrary size, topology and multi-protocol, imitating the behaviors of the master core and slave core. Finally, the effectiveness and correctness of this platform is verified by evaluating and analyzing a specific NoC instance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: LMS algorithm is a classic kind of adaptive algorithms. It has the virtue of simple operation, but it also shows the defects of relatively slow convergence and big steady state errors in low SNR, In order to remedy these defects, this paper put forward a new variable steps adaptive LMS algorithm. In the transient state, the learning rate increases slowly with the iteration times which accelerate the convergence rate of LMS algorithm. In the steady state, the learning rate decreases gradually with the iteration times which guarantee the convergence accuracy of LMS algorithm. After applied in the design of adaptive wavetrap, this improved algorithm, according to simulation results, effectively eases up the conflicts between convergence rates and steady state errors and improves the performance of wavetrap in real-time trapping. Abstract: Fast and accurate transient sensitivity computation is one of the key points for the success of circuit optimization programs and many EDA tools. In this paper, we propose an efficient strategy, based on Iterated Timing Analysis (ITA) and a modified Direct Approach for sensitivity computation, to perform sensitivity simulations for large-scale MOSFET circuits. This strategy considers optimization programs’ custom of using sensitivities, i.e. to take the sensitivities of few circuit variables with respect to many design parameters. All proposed methods have been implemented, and the simulating results justify their outstanding performance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Aimed at MEMS accelerometers are sensitive to vehicle maneuver vibration, a modified wavelet thresholding denoising method is proposed as an efficient pre-filter for low cost inertial accelerometers under vibration. Wavelet denoising can separate signal from noises according to their different characteristics and wipe off noises spreading entire frequency domain, which is widely used in denoising in the field of signal processing. This paper reveals how wavelet thresholding method to eliminate noises of the accelerometers. The choosing of thresholding operator and thresholding value is a key in wavelet thresholding denoising. Thus, an adaptive thresholding value and a modular square thresholding operator are proposed, and the specific steps of this method are given. The experiment shows that the proposed method exhibits a significant performance improvement, and can filter out noises. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper, The implementation of hidden Markov model (HMM) training methods and rough filter decision methods for the electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis is discussed. The HMM is a stochastic model, which is used to recognized the heart disease by the ECG as the sequence of connected elementary waveform. The training methods of HMM is based on Expectation-Maximization(EM) and Bayesian approaches, therefore, the rough set theory is used to select feature of ECG Simultaneously. In the experiment, the HMMS and rough filter model is proved efficiency to recognize the heart disease by ECG segments. Performance of the training methods was assessed through experiments considering the ECG databases. The results obtained show that the training improves beat segmentation and ischemia detection performance with the advantage of low computational effort. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: With the development of multi-core technology, more and more servers adopt CPUs with multi-core to improve the performance. However, we couldn’t exploit the potential of multi-core system efficiently because traditional programs were developed and executed based on serial or very limited parallel mode. In this paper, a new application level parallelization model is proposed and applied to servers, which could parallelize the software at application level instead of relying on operating system level parallelization. By this mean, a simulation program, which is called ALPM, was developed. Experiments have been done to evaluate the new model, and the results show that the new model can improve the performance of multi-core system effectively, and avoid the problems of cache coherent and ping-pong effect. Abstract: Parallel iterative algorithms for linear systems have become an important area in high performance computation. This paper studies two-stage iterative methods for symmetric positive definite linear systems. An estimate of minimum inner iterative number is obtained for convergence of stationary iterative methods. The convergent range of relaxation factor of relaxed two-stage iterative methods is decided by the minimums of eigenvalues of inner and outer iteration matrices. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper we present a video segmentation method based on edge detection for separating moving objects from the background in video sequences, and the sequences were taken by stationary cameras. Firstly, the edge of target objects was divided into two parts, one is produced in each frame due to objects moving, represented as Edgem(x,y);the other is original-exist edge in the following frames, represented as Edges(x,y);secondly, Edgem(x,y) is made based on combining the change detection masks with the spatial segmentation in the current frame; thirdly, Edges(x,y) is performed based on combining the background subtraction result with the spatial segmentation in the current frame; then, merge the above –mentioned two fusion results; finally, through morphological operation to fill the whole target. Experimental results demonstrate the performance of our algorithm. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Since the estimation of distribution algorithm(EDA) was introduced, different approaches for continuous problems solving have been developed. Through the efforts of many scholars, the EDAs brought some success in continuous domain, but there are still some deficiencies: Gaussian-based EDA doesn’t perform well in problems with many optima, such as Schwefel function; histogram-based EDA doesn’t perform well in problems with singular global optimum, such as Three-Peak function. Because of this, based on improved histogram-based EDA and referred to the idea of k-Means clustering, we built cooperative EDA. Experimental results showed that the improved algorithm in this paper can give comparable with or better performance than those improved algorithms. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The traditional MS tracker has two main drawbacks: (1) The template model can only be built from a single image; (2) It is difficult to adaptively update the template over the tracking. In this paper we attempt to use an online SVM based kernels model updating method to overcome these above-mentioned problems. Simultaneously, in contrast with the template matching method which one usually achieves tracking through maximizing the likelihood between model and candidate region. Here, we treat the tracking as a foreground/background classification problem. Initialized with a small number of data to train using SVM, we could get primitive models (include the object models and the background models) and a decision function. In the process of tracking, we update the previous models using the tracked data, and then maximize the value of decision function with the help of the particle swarm optimization. The optimal solution predicts the object''s location. Experiments show that this method performs better than MS tracker on some challenging sequences. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Motion estimation based on block matching plays a very important role in video coding. In this paper, a fast motion estimation algorithm was proposed—three-step diamond search (TSDS), which is an improved version of the diamond search algorithm. This algorithm can be used for the new video coding standard H.264/AVC. Compared with diamond search (DS), the TSDS algorithm achieves the performance but the searching points are less 20% on average. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm greatly outperforms four-step search and DS in the number of searching points. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
