The process of tree uprooting plays an important role in sediment transport within forested slopes. In this study we determine the intensity of sediment transport by uprooting and its dependencies. We use the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to determine the most important factors influencing root plate sizes, and we calculate sediment flux by windthrow for the area of the Tatra National Park (211.6 km 2 ), for the year 2013, when an extreme windthrow event occurred. For this purpose we combine field data with the results of windthrow areas mapping based on satellite imagery. We also use data recorded by the Tatra National Park concerning the amount of destroyed wood in the forests of the Tatra National Park to calculate sediment flux by windthrow for the period between 1968 and 2015 (48 years). To calculate the transport distance by the uprooting needed to compute sediment flux, we modified the Gabet et al.'s (2003) Eq. (11), which in our opinion gives results which are twice the actual size. The PCA identified two the most important factors influencing root plate sizes. The first factor shows that all root plate dimensions increase with increasing tree DBH (diameter at breast height), and, to a lesser degree, with an increase in the content of coarse material. The second factor shows that the depth of a root plate increases with the downslope angle of tree fall, decreasing slope inclination, and decreasing the content of coarse material. The sediment flux by windthrow in 2013 in the area of the Tatra National Park was 3.55 × 10 − 4 m 3 m − 1 yr − 1 . This study aimed to evaluate the drivers of suspended sediment (SS) transport by analyzing the flood events recorded from July 2010 to June 2011 in the Celone River basin (Apulia, S-E Italy). High-resolution data of rainfall, streamflow (Q), and measurements of suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) were used to carry out the multivariate analysis. Among the initial 18 variables, the Principal Component Analysis revealed that total volume (m3), peak discharge (Qmax, m3/s), and the flood duration were the most important factors influencing SS transport. Total rainfall and total kinetic energy recorded in the gauging station located in the lowland were also important factors, whereas the same rainfall variables recorded in the remote mountainous area of the basin had a minor influence on SS transport. Antecedent moisture conditions were significantly correlated only with the initial discharge of the flood. Hysteresis loops between SSC and Q were analyzed for each flood event by using the hysteresis index (HI). Results showed that this catchment was dominated by anticlockwise loops (negative values of HI) representative of delayed SS transport and of distant SS source areas in terms of the gauging station. These results also suggested that soil erosion from hillslopes was the dominant process compared with channel and bank erosion and that there was no exhaustion of sediment availability in the basin. Water-driven erosion associated with the transport and deposition of sediments in watersheds may lead to contamination problems causing significant damage to land and infrastructure. The key factors that influence erosive processes are well known and include the precipitation rate, terrain topography, soil type, and vegetation cover. The soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) considers these factors and may be used to identify areas susceptible to soil erosion and to estimate soil loss and sediment transport and deposition. To corroborate this assumption, real data on rill erosion and sediment transport from the Mogi Guaçu River Basin in southeastern Brazil were used to validate SWAT estimates. The study shows that the model is able to identify soil-eroded areas and replicate the scale and variation patterns of sediment production, although not with great precision. Hence, it can successfully be used for prioritizing areas that require action and for evaluating alternative soil management and conservation practices to mitigate erosive processes. Sediment transport in alluvial rivers is critical to reshape channel morphology and to the global geochemical cycle. This study reports a detailed investigation into the contributions of different sources to sediment transport in the Middle Yangtze River (MYR). It is found that: (i) after the operation of the Three Gorges Project (TGP), the dominant sediment source in the MYR changed from the upstream input to the fluvial erosion and tributary input, with the upstream input providing 38% of the outlet sediment amount in the MYR and the fluvial erosion and tributary input providing around 39% and 23%, respectively; (ii) river bed erosion contributed to 21% of the transported sediment after the TGP, whereas bank erosion contributed to around 18%, which was estimated to be 2 times larger if bank protection works were not constructed after the TGP; (iii) in terms of the sediment transport processes of different fractions after the TGP, the fraction of fine sediment (diameter d ≤ 0.31 mm) in the MYR mainly came from the upstream and tributary input, and the fraction of medium sediment (0.31 mm < d ≤ 0.125 mm) almost equally came from each source, whereas the fraction of coarse sediment (d > 0.125 mm) was primarily eroded from the bed and banks. Besides, the MYR was transformed from a transport-limited river system into a supply-limited one after the TGP operation, with the total amount of sediment supply accounting for 21% of its transport capacity under current flow and boundary conditions. The development of bed armoring in the main stream and the construction of various river regulation works, would result in a further decrease in the sediment supply rate of the MYR in the future. • Hillslope erosion dynamic model integrating vegetation effect was established. • Unified baseline parameters were obtained across different land uses. • Effect of vegetation on soil detachment and sediment transport was revealed. • Contribution rates of vegetation to sediment reduction along slopes were quantified. Developing a process-based soil erosion model that comprehensively considers the effects of vegetation is complex but crucial for evaluating sediment reduction during vegetation restoration. Current understanding of the effect of vegetation on sediment reduction along hillslopes across different land uses is limited. In this paper, we developed a dynamic model of hillslope erosion that integrates the effects of vegetation on soil detachability and hydrodynamics (VED) based on the feedback mechanism between soil detachment and sediment transport. The VED was calibrated and validated with runoff plot data for woodland, grassland, and farmland in the Wuding, Yan, Jing and Wei Rivers of the Loess Plateau in China. Unified baseline parameters and decay coefficients of vegetation were obtained. The model validation results indicated that the coefficient of determination, Nash–Sutcliffe simulation efficiency and relative error ranged from 0.59 to 0.99, 0.56 to 0.90, and −45.99 % to 46.36 %, respectively. The decay coefficients for soil detachment capacity (Φ), sediment transport capacity (T c), and the sediment reduction effect of vegetation exhibited the following order: woodland > grassland > farmland. Compared with VED, existing process-based soil erosion models failed to effectively characterize the influence of vegetation on Φ and T c on the Loess Plateau, with differences of several orders of magnitude. The individual contributions of runoff, soil detachability, and hydrodynamics with vegetation impact on sediment yield were quantified by VED. The contribution rates of vegetation to sediment reduction decreased gradually with increasing slope length because the soil detachment capacity of bare slopes exceeded that of vegetated slopes, resulting in a faster increase in sediment yield. The contribution rates of vegetation to sediment reduction for woodland, grassland, and farmland with 20 %–60 % vegetation covers were 66.75 %–99.95 %, 57.43 %–99.63 %, and 27.91 %–88.63 % in the boundary conditions of this study, respectively. The results reveal the potential for integrating VED into other distributed watershed hydrological and sediment models to assess the effects of vegetation restoration on sediment reduction at a watershed scale. • Soil erosion process on frozen-stony slope is experimentally investigated. • Sediment concentration on frozen-stony slope follows linear-exponent curves. • The impacts of thawed soil depth and rock fragment content on sediment transport process are quantified. Rill erosion on frozen-stony slope in high-altitude or high-latitude areas commonly undergo freeze–thaw cycle, which is significantly influenced by partially thawed soil with rock fragment. This research aims to investigate the influences of thawed soil depth (TSD) and rock fragment content (RFC) on rill erosion and quantifying the mathematical relationships among them. The laboratory experiment is conducted to evaluate the influences of TSD (1, 2, 5, and 10 cm) and RFC (0%, 10%, 20%, and 50%) on sediment delivery processes by concentrated meltwater flow under three slope gradients of 5°, 10°, and 15°, and three flow rates of 1, 2, and 4 L min−1 at nine rill lengths from 0.5 m to 8.0 m. Five runoff samples are obtained from each experiment run and used to calculate sediment concentration (SC). The SC increases linearly and then exponentially with rill length to approximate the extremum and fits well with piecewise functions. Restrictive effect of TSD and RFC on sediment supply is evident during linear stage induced by shallow TSD, which keeps a long distance under shallow TSD and low RFC to collect sufficient sediment for exponential period. However, TSD and RFC impacts become apparent during the exponential period and lead to higher sediment yield with RFC of 10% and 20% than that on totally thawed soil without rock fragment. In this research, the positive effect on sediment yield increases with RFC increases from 10% to 20%, which may need to be eliminated for efficiency in erosion control. In contrast to low RFC, the protection impact of rock fragment always exerts with RFC of 50%. The experimental data and the functional relationship can provide the basic knowledge for evaluating the model parameters such as soil detachment rate and erodibility of rill erosion on frozen-stony slope. • Differential travel rates cause particle size distributions to vary with time. • Sediment discharges peak at drop size dependent flow depths. • Sediment concentrations increase before declining as flow depth tends to zero. In laboratory experiments undertaken using sand on a sloping surface in the 1970s, it was observed that while fine material moved as suspended load, fine to medium sand was induced to saltate as the result of raindrop impacts whereas coarse sand and gravel were induced to roll. The particle size distribution of the sediment discharge was initially much finer than the original bed and coarsened with time to approach that of the bed as time passed. At the time the exact nature of the raindrop induced transport mechanisms was not well known. Later, experiments using an apparatus that enabled the depth and velocity of rain-impacted flow to be controlled over an eroding surface, showed that raindrops induced some particles to travel limited distances that depended on a number of factors including flow velocity and particle size and density. The resultant differential travel rates of particles of different size and density provided an explanation as to why particle size distributions of sediments discharged by rain-impacted flows vary temporally, and why a non-cohesive layer develops on top of the surface of the cohesive matrix soil. The formation of the non-cohesive layer is indicative of erosion being transport limited when raindrop induced saltation occurs. The experiments also showed that sediment discharges produced by rain-impacted flows peaked at a drop size dependent flow depth so that a function that accounts for the interaction between raindrop size and flow depth could be developed for drops impacting at close to their terminal velocities. One of the implications of the observed responses to variations in rainfall and flow conditions is that the assumption that rain has certain erosive power that is defined simply by the product of flow discharge and rainfall factors such as rainfall intensity or the kinetic energy flux is a false assumption. • A mathematical model considering the operation of 24 mega reservoirs was proposed. • The sedimentation mainly occurs in the mainstream during the flood season. • The cascade reservoirs operation leads to easier and prolonged sedimentation. The intensive construction of large dams in the upper Yangtze River Basin (UYRB) has formed large-scale cascade reservoirs and obviously altered the flow regime and sediment transport of the basin. However, few studies have quantitatively described the cumulative impact of these reservoirs on sediment interception. In this study, a flow and sediment transport model that fully considers the operation processes of 24 mega reservoirs in the UYRB was established, and the spatial and temporal variations in sedimentation from 2011 to 2080 were elucidated, assuming repeated series of daily input flow discharge and sediment concentration during 2011–2020 and monthly water operation levels of 24 reservoirs during 2018–2021 as boundary conditions. The results showed an annual average sedimentation of more than 300 Mt in the UYRB during 2011–2060, which falls to 270 Mt in the period 2061–2080, and more than 80% of the sedimentation occurs in the flood season. Nearly 80% of the total sedimentation during 2010–2080 was observed in the mainstream reservoirs, especially the four mega reservoirs in the lower Jinsha River and the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), which accounted for 31.9% and 22.7% of the total sedimentation, respectively. The proportion of sedimentation in mainstream reservoirs will further increase with increasing operation periods. Most reservoirs in the UYRB will not reach sedimentation equilibrium by 2080, except for reservoirs in the Min River Basin. The ratio of siltation capacity to average annual sediment yield determines the percentage of residual siltation capacity of each reservoir. The operation of the cascade reservoirs in 2013–2020 had no more immediate impact on the middle and lower Yangtze River than that in 2003–2012, when the TGR started impoundment. However, the joint operation of these cascade reservoirs has changed the spatial distribution of sedimentation in the UYRB, and will lead to prolonged impacts on downstream channel erosion. Abstract: Treating the dynamics of sediment transport as two-dimensional on interrill-areas and as one-dimensional in rill sections, areally averaged sheet sediment transport equations are developed. The two-dimensional sheet sediment transport equation is averaged over an individual interrill-area width and then along the interrill-area length to obtain local-scale areally averaged interrill-area sheet sediment transport equation (local-scale areal averaging). Similarly, the cross-sectionally-averaged rill sediment transport equation is averaged along an individual rill length to obtain local-scale areally averaged rill sediment transport equation (local-scale areal averaging). In order to minimize computational effort and economize on the number of model parameters, the local-scale areally averaged equations are then averaged over a whole hillslope section (large-scale areal averaging). These equations constitute the areally averaged model. The expectations of the terms containing more than one variable are obtained by the method of regular perturbation. In the large-scale areal averaging it is assumed that all the randomness in the state variable is due to the randomness in the parameters of the process. Comparison of the results obtained from the areally averaged model with those of the point-scale model indicates that the areally averaged model uses far less data and yet it performs as well as the point-scale model. The results of the developed model indicate that on a rilled-surface most of the sediment loads comes from rill sections. The developed model is successfully tested against experimental data obtained from a bare rilled hillslope. It predicted measured runoff and sediment rates with mean absolute errors of 11.07 l/min and 0.382 kg/s, respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This study reviews the existing erosion and sediment transport models developed at hillslope and watershed scales. The method followed in this review is to summarize the models with a focus on the physically based modeling technique as well as with a brief discussion about empirical and conceptual models. Approaches for determining the sediment transport capacity of flow are explained. The extension of a sediment transport model to a nutrient transport model is then discussed. Finally, the future of erosion and sediment transport models are projected to include the probabilistic description of hydrology, the physical characteristics of the watershed, and the stochastic structure of soil properties. The review is expected to be of interest to researchers, watershed managers and decision-makers while searching for models to study erosion and sediment transport phenomena and related processes such as pollutant and nutrient transport. The understanding of soil erosion processes and the development of accurate erosion prediction models require understanding of detachment, deposition, and sediment transport in rills. The objectives of this study were to determine whether sediment transport capacity is a unique value for given soil, flow rate, and slope, and to determine if equilibrium sediment concentration in the rill obtained by detachment was different from that observed under depositional conditions. Experiments on a Carmi loam (fine, mixed, mesic Typic Hapludalf) simulated rill erosion under net detachment and net deposition conditions. Two discharge rates of 6 and 9 l min−1 and two sediment input regimes of 0 and excess of transport capacity were tested on soil beds with lengths of 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8 m at 7% slope. Sediment load reached steady state conditions within the 8-m distance on the rill. At 9 l min−1 discharge, 8 m length, and excess sediment added to the flow, sediment delivery was 71 g l−1 versus 31 g l−1 for the corresponding case with no sediment added. Overall, for the conditions tested, rill flow transported two times more sediment than it could detach. The flow did not reach its maximum potential transported load through detachment of soil due in part to changes in the sediment size distribution under deposition and possibly to the protective action of bedload particles moving along the rill bottom and/or changes in flow turbulence associated with sediment laden flow. • Changes in spatial variation of rock fragment contents (SVRFC) due to tillage altered hydrological and erosional processes. • Yields of subsurface flow and deep percolation increased with decreasing SVRFC. • The decreasing SVRFC caused a decrease in surface erosion, but an increase in subsurface erosion. • Effects of rainfall intensity on hydrological and erosional processes were associated with SVRFC. Cultivation activities play an important role in shaping the spatial distribution of rock fragments in hilly agricultural landscapes. The spatial variation in rock fragment contents (SVRFC) can exert strong effects on the spatial heterogeneity of soil properties with great implications for hydrological fluxes and soil erosion. However, previous research always assumed that rock fragments were homogenously distributed, but little has been known concerning the SVRFC over the hillslope and its influence on hydrological and erosional processes. In this study, simulated rock fragment contents (RFCs) in soil layers at the upper (0.6 kg kg−1) and lower slope positions (0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 kg kg−1) were established in combination with artificial rainfall experiments, to investigate the influence of RFC difference between the upper and lower slope positions on hydrological and erosional processes. Results show that the decreasing RFC difference reduced the yield of surface flow (5–100%), but increased yields of subsurface flow (58–792%) and deep percolation (19–130%). Additionally, the decreasing RFC difference reduced the runoff velocity of surface flow and surface erosion rate, but aggravated subsurface erosion. Especially under the 0 kg kg−1 RFC difference, the intense soil loss occurred at the subsurface which may be due to the highly developed preferential flow. With increasing rainfall intensity, great increments in yields of subsurface flow, deep percolation and subsurface sediments were found under the small RFC difference which had small increments in yields of surface flow and surface sediments. These results suggest that the changing SVRFC related to tillage erosion can exert strong influence on behaviors of hydrological and erosional processes. Woody species encroachment into herbaceous and shrub-dominated vegetations is a concern in many rangeland ecosystems of the world. Arrival of woody species into affected rangelands leads to changes in the spatial structure of vegetation and alterations of biophysical processes. In the western USA, encroachment of pinyon (Pinus spp.) and juniper (Juniperus spp.) tree species into sagebrush steppes poses a threat to the proper ecohydrological functioning of these ecosystems. Prescribed fire has been proposed and used as one rangeland improvement practice to restore sagebrush steppe from pinyon-juniper encroachment. Short-term effects of burning on the ecohydrologic response of these systems have been well documented and often include a period of increased hydrologic and erosion vulnerability immediately after burning. Long-term ecohydrologic response of sagebrush steppe ecosystems to fire is poorly understood due to lack of cross-scale studies on treated sites. The aim of this study is to evaluate long-term vegetation, hydrologic, and erosion responses at two pinyon-juniper-encroached sagebrush sites 9 years after prescribed fire was applied as a restoration treatment. Thirty-six rainfall simulation experiments on 6 m × 2 m plots were conducted for 45 min under two conditions: a dry run (70 mm h−1; dry antecedent soils) and a wet run (111 mm h−1; wet antecedent soils). Runoff and erosion responses were compared between burned and unburned plots. Overall, increases in herbaceous cover in the shrub-interspace areas (intercanopy area between trees) at both sites 9 years post-burn resulted in runoff- and erosion-reduction benefits, especially under the wet runs. While the initially more degraded site characterized by 80% bare ground pre-burn, registered a higher overall increase (40% increase) in canopy cover, greater post-fire reductions in runoff and erosion were observed at the less degraded site (57% bare ground pre-burn). Runoff and erosion for the wet runs decreased respectively by 6.5-fold and 76-fold at the latter site on the burned plots relative to control plots, whereas these decreases were more muted at the more degraded site (2.5 and 3-fold respectively). Significant fragmentation of flow paths observed at the more-degraded site 9 years post-fire, suggests a decreased hydrologic connectivity as a mechanism of runoff and erosion reduction during post-fire recovery. Land use change in the Southern Grasslands biome with the introduction of exotic, fast-growing forest species is a controversial topic, because of the potential effect on water and soil resources. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of afforesting degraded grassland on streamflow and sedimentation in subtropical headwater catchments. Two small, headwater catchments were studied, one planted with Eucalyptus saligna (EC: 0.83 km2) and another with grasslands and extensive livestock (GC: 1.10 km2). Rainfall, runoff, and sediment discharge were monitored from September 2013 to March 2017. The results show two-fold greater surface runoff and sediment yield occurred in GC than in EC. Maximum and mean runoff coefficients were, respectively, 45.5 and 10.2% in GC, and 12.4 and 2.2% in EC; suspended sediment yield was, respectively, 67.9 and 22.4 Mg km−2 in GC and EC; and bed load sediment yield was only 0.053 and 0.006 Mg km−2. El Niño year with high rainfall produced the greatest annual sediment yield, with values 4.2 times greater in GC (167.7 Mg km−2) than in EC (39.9 Mg km−2). Hydrographs/sedimentographs synchronization and hysteresis patterns suggest faster sediment delivery in GC than in EC, but further studies are needed to conciliate sediment sources results with sediment fingerprinting. Staggered forest harvest (21% of the planted eucalyptus) led to sediment yield comparable to the observed during the pre-harvest period, and lower than in grassland catchment. In conclusion, well‐managed forest plantations, including staggered forest harvesting and preservation of riparian forest, are less prone to sedimentation than degraded grassland under intensive grazing. Well-managed afforestation of degraded lands contributes to soil conservation in the studied region, whereas low ecological performance of degraded grassland calls for soil and pasture management practices to increase forage offer to grazing animals, while conserving soil and water resources in the catchments. Soil carbon losses from sheet and interrill erosion areas have an impact on the global carbon cycle. Sediment discharged in many experiments where artificial rainfall has been applied to sloping soil surfaces show greater proportions of carbon in the sediment than found in the cohesive soil source. In many cases, conclusions drawn from these experiments fail to recognise that the enrichment of carbon in the sediment discharge is a result of unsteady conditions that occur before the steady state develops. It is known that particles of sand of different sizes move at different rates when raindrop induced salation occurs with the result that initially the particle size distribution is finer than the source but tends towards that of the source as time progresses. The presence of carbon in aggregates influences the density of aggregates. Here a qualitative model of sediment transport of sand and coal particles by raindrop induced saltation is used to demonstrate time varying enrichment of coal resulting from the effect of carbon on particle settling velocity. The model also demonstrates how the layer of loose particles that develops on top of the cohesive soil surface influences the relative amounts of carbon and sand in the sediment discharges. The steady state is not achieved until the slowest moving particle detached at the farthest distance from the downslope boundary is discharged. Eroded sediment is an important feature of permanent gully's development; however, obtaining the specific characteristics of the sediment transport in the gully can be difficult. Thus, a composite fingerprinting technique, incorporating uncertainty analysis, has been employed to investigate the mean relative contribution of sediment sources in permanent gullies. In this study, 31 tracers were measured at 62 different sampling sites from three layers of a gully wall [surface layer (SL), sandy soil layer (SSL), and semi-weathering rock layer (SWL)] and 36 sediment samples from the slumping deposit and alluvial fan of the gullies. The sediment source tracing procedure was therefore used to assess the relative contribution of each source. The mean relative contribution from the SL to the sediment of the slumping deposit is higher in the active gully (G1), and is relatively lower in the potentially stable (G2) and stable gullies (G3); thus there was no obvious gully bank retreat in G2 and G3. In different places of the G1 alluvial fan, the mean relative contribution of the SL, SSL and SWL ranged from 9–11, 36–43 and 46–55%, respectively. However, the sediment contribution of the SL increased in G2 and G3 due to the changes in the erosion type. The mean relative contributions of the SL were 33 ± 5 (G2) and 30 ± 3% (G3). Abstract: The area burned by wildfire in the states of Arizona and New Mexico in the southwestern US has been increasing in recent years. In many cases, high severity burns have caused dramatic increases in runoff and sediment yield from burned watersheds. This paper describes the potential and limitations of the HEC6T sediment transport model to describe changes in channel scour and deposition following the Cerro Grande fire near Los Alamos, New Mexico. Following the fire, Pueblo Canyon, near Los Alamos, was subject to a peak flow two orders of magnitudes higher than any discharge in the 7-year period of record, and twice the initial post-fire estimate of the 100-year event. HEC6T requires that the limits of scour and deposition on a cross-section be specified prior to application. This was achieved by using geomorphologic principles, predicted post-burn hydrology and long-term estimates of channel change derived from air photos, to estimate post-fire channel widths. Because significant quantities of silt and clay were present in the runoff, erosion shear stress and erosion rate parameters for cohesive sediments had to be obtained experimentally. After a sensitivity analysis, an optimization routine was used to estimate the optimal model parameter values for sensitive parameters. HEC6T was able to accurately model the change in cumulative sediment volume change derived from Airborne Laser Swath Mapping (ALSM, often called Lidar) taken before and after the large post-fire event. One discrepancy between the HEC6T model prediction and the ALSM-estimated change was that the ALSM-estimated change showed the greatest amount of deposition in a portion of the canyon with increasing slope, which the HEC6T model did not predict. Any sediment transport model will predict increased sediment transport capacity with increasing energy slope, so that it was considered to be beyond the capability of any sediment transport model to predict this deposition. Therefore, HEC6T simulated the overall changes in scour and deposition within reasonable expectation of the capabilities of physically-based sediment transport modeling indicating that it is capable of modeling sediment transport in ephemeral channels following wildfire. Thus, field monitoring on a natural hillslope and indoor simulations on a dual-box system were conducted to better understand their relationship. The results showed that both field monitoring and indoor simulation displayed the additional sediment delivery caused by upslope sediment-laden flow, verifying the transport-dominated sediment regime in EG systems. In field observations, the sediment increment coefficient (SIC , ratio of net sediment delivery caused by upslope sediment-laden flow to the total sediment delivery) on an event scale varied from 4.6% to 88.6%. In indoor simulations, the SIC changed from 24.9% to 87.5%. The variation of soil erosion across scales remains a controversial issue. A theoretical framework, coupling the normalized Green-Ampt equation for infiltration, 1D kinematic wave model for overland flow, and WEPP erosion modeling approaches for soil erosion, was used to explain and quantify the direct effect of scale on the soil erosion process. The results show that the relation between interrill erosion and slope length accords with a power-law decreasing trend, while the relation of rill erosion versus slope length shows a power-law increasing trend. Moreover, the power-law scaling of interrill erosion becomes more prominent with an increase of rainfall duration and intensity but is nearly independent of the interrill erodibility factor. The rainfall duration, soil type, soil critical shear stress, sediment transport coefficient, and rill erodibility factor substantially influence the magnitude of scale effect on rill erosion, while rainfall intensity, slope gradient, and Manning's roughness have minor effects. It suggests that the scale effect on soil erosion is variable and dynamic for different erosion types, rainfall and soil characteristics, which can explain why the controversial scaling relationships of soil erosion exist in previous studies. The physically based soil erosion model WEPP is compared to the empirical models USLE and RUSLE at various scales. Only when rill erosion plays a dominant role in soil loss do all these models exhibit consistent scale effect on erosion. Abstract: In the Sahelian zone of West-Africa, erosion by both wind and water causes a serious decline in fertility of the already low fertile soils. Despite the fact that the flow of nutrients has been intensively investigated by the use of nutrient balances, little attention has been paid to the contribution of the soil erosion to the nutrient balance. Two physically based models (WEPS and EUROSEM, both written in PCRaster) were extended with nutrient modules to investigate the role of wind and water erosion in the loss and gain of nutrients at the scale of a Sahelian field. The models are applied at three geomorphic units in the Katchari catchment in northern Burkina Faso. WEPS can predict spatial patterns of erosion and deposition due to wind-blown particle transport. Depending on wind direction, crusting and vegetation cover net erosion or deposition can occur. When erosion occurs considerable amounts of nutrients are lost, but when deposition occurs, most of these nutrients may be regained. Soil loss by water erosion is closely related to the crust type present, which regulates infiltration and thus runoff. Nutrient losses by water erosion are small compared with those by wind erosion, but are forever lost for the area. In this study, the temporal evolution of fine sediment deposits on a gravel bar is analysed during a two-year period. The time-series of fine deposit surface area is obtained using the methodology proposed in Part 1 of this work. By combining the hydro-meteorological data, the main evolutions of the fine deposits observed on the bar surface are found to be triggered by events such as natural floods, dam flushes, and strong wind valley breezes, and are quantified for each of these events. A simple processed-based flow model is proposed to investigate the sediment dynamics during the flood events, which balances the erosional/depositional processes of fine sediments. Variability in the fine deposit evolution after floods is mainly due to the different flow and sediment concentration conditions. For small events for which the gravel bar is not totally submerged, a slight erosion generally occurs. For larger events for which the gravel bar is totally submerged, a large net deposition is often observed. The fine deposit surface area time-series also shows sharp decreases of the surface deposit coverage after some strong valley breeze events, with an evolution of the same order of magnitude than floods. The application of a wind transport model shows that strong wind valley breezes can transport fine particles from the bar surface to the river channel, thus leading to a loss of fine deposits on the bar surface. Also, the deposit initial moisture is a crucial element having impact on the fine sediment transport on the bar surface. Dry deposits are much more likely to be transported than wet deposits. However, how sediment sizes and transport patterns response to original soils over a wide range of structural stability remains unclear. Herein, field plot rainfall simulation experiments on five soils along an increased gradient of structural stability were conducted at two rainfall intensities of 45 and 90 mm h−1 to investigate effective sediment size characteristics and associated transport patterns in sheet erosion. Differing from runoff and sediment yield, sediment sizes were most influenced by soil structural stability (F = 386.9) rather than rainfall intensity (F = 246.7, p < 0.001). Mean weight diameter of sediment (0.16–0.84 mm) and the proportion of coarse particles (>0.25 mm) exhibited a unimodal variation with increased soil structural stability. The effective sediment size distribution shifted from unimodal with the peak at < 0.10 mm for low and high stable soils to bimodal with two peaks at < 0.10 mm and 0.5–1 mm for medium stable soils. Correspondingly, suspension-saltation (>74 %) dominated sediment transport for low and high stable soils, which was determined by fine sized fragments from aggregate breakdown and small flow transport capacity, respectively; while both suspension-saltation (<0.10 mm) and rolling (>0.25 mm) jointly contributed to sediment transport for medium stable soils, which was controlled by the interaction between fragment size and flow transport capacity. Moreover, the positive effect of rainfall intensity on sediment sizes was more remarkable for the medium than for the low and high stable soils. A conceptual model of sediment transport mechanisms in response to soil structural stability is firstly proposed, which merits consideration in the future development of erosion modeling and soil conservation techniques. • Ephemeral Gully (EG) Erosion is a major erosion concern and needs to be addressed. • Very few models simulate EG erosion. • A thorough review of processes behind EG simulation in existing models is discussed. • Future needs and directions to improve EG simulation processes in models are enumerated. Modeling of ephemeral gully (EG) erosion has lagged that of other soil erosion processes despite its major contribution to watershed sediment losses. Several process and semi-empirical based simulation models have been used to assess the occurrence and location of EGs, magnitude of soil losses from EGs, and degradation, aggradation, and transport of sediment through EGs, but no comprehensive EG model exists. This paper reviews these models and presents a thorough discussion of their background, general formulations, key equations, field assessments, assumptions and limitations. Most current EG models evolved from the original formulations used in CREAMS, with incremental improvements by EGEM, WEPP, AnnAGNPS-REGEM, RUSLER-EphGEE models. These models provide process-based estimation of EG processes and field-scale soil-erosion contributions, but all models, except EphGEE, require users to have a priori knowledge of EG locations and all have significant shortcomings. Several topographic index models are discussed that provide simplistic approaches to locate EGs on the landscape using only topographic features. Process-based threshold index models may provide a more robust simulation of EG location and length, though testing has been limited. EG modeling appears to still be in its infancy, with great opportunities for future research, as discussed herein, to improve the understanding and simulation of EG erosion and transport processes. • First validation of a daily large-scale sediment model using remote-sensing data. • Remotely-sensed reflectance can help sediment dynamics modeling in ungauged basins. • Better spatiotemporal sediment patterns using surrogate observations. Sediment models are important for estimating soil erosion, sediment transport, and deposition at different scales and for disparate scenarios; however, the availability of in-situ measurements may not be sufficient for the appropriate evaluation of model performance. For this reason, this study investigated how surrogate data (water quality [WQ] and remote sensing) could be used as a proxy for suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in order to evaluate the performance of a large-scale erosion and sediment transport model. To achieve this, the daily SSC was simulated, using the Large Scale Sediment Model (MGB-SED), a semi-distributed and conceptual model in which the Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (MUSLE) is used to estimate sediment yield and an advection-diffusion equation is used to route suspended loads along rivers. Four experiments were performed that compared simulated SSC against: (1) in-situ SSC; (2) turbidity; (3) total suspended solids (TSS); and (4) surface spectral reflectance (SSR). Correlation analysis showed that r -values above 0.5 were found in 62%, 91%, 89% and 83% of the SSC, turbidity, TSS and SSR stations, respectively. Spatially, the model was evaluated in smaller drainage areas, using WQ data. Temporally, the number of SSR observations was greater than the number of in-situ measurements, allowing a better analysis of the temporal dynamics of the simulated SSC. Also, the SSR data improved the spatial coverage and could be employed for even large-scale, ungauged basins. These results bring a new perspective to the application of sediment models in poorly or ungauged basins, since surrogate data can improve the spatial and temporal suspended sediment coverage when compared to traditional SSC measurements, which is a common issue in large-scale sediment modeling. Extreme rainfall is becoming more frequent and intense, which no doubt increases the risks and uncertainty of water erosion in widely-used contour ridge systems. Ridge slope erosion can increase the probability of contour failure occurrence and then induce contour ridge losing anti-erosion properties. However, there is little understanding of ridge slope erosive process controlled by contour ridge system responding to extreme rainfall. In this study, five rare earth elements were applied in different ridge segments and soil layers to monitor the successive development of ridge slope erosion process under extreme rainfall in contour ridge system. Simulated rainfall experiments at high rainfall intensity (100 mm h−1) lasting for 60 min were conducted in runoff plots with ridge tillage practices characterized by microtopography indices and ridge geometry indices. Results showed that three sub-processes were observed for ridge slope erosion, including inter-rill erosion, headward erosion, and rill erosion. Headward erosion mainly resulted from the break-point at ridge surface and sidewall collapse at ridge toe, and the pouring of ponding water in furrow greatly promoted rill development. Erosion rate was the largest during headward erosion process, and rill erosion contributed the most to eroded source. The dominated erosion process was transport-limited during inter-rill erosion process, and detachment-limited during headward and rill erosion processes. Sediment transport and deposition processes as well as their transformation occurred simultaneously after the development of headward erosion. Eroded sediment was mainly from the low part of ridge, which was transported by raindrop-impacted sheet flow or overflow. • An integrated 1D morphodynamic model was proposed covering three different modules. • Bank erosion and accretion processes in the braided reach of the LYR were simulated. • Large-scale bank deformation played an important role in the channel evolution. The braided reach of the Lower Yellow River (LYR) often experienced dramatic channel evolution during flood seasons, with both bed and bank deformations occurring simultaneously, which led to several negative effects such as land loss, channel migration and overbank flooding. A coupled one-dimensional model was proposed to simulate both bed evolution and bank deformation, including three modules of flow-sediment transport, bed deformation, and bank erosion and accretion. The proposed model was applied respectively to simulate the longitudinal and lateral channel deformations in the braided reach in the years of 2018 and 2006, in order to conduct detailed processes of model calibration and verification. The results indicate that: the proposed model can accurately simulate the flow and sediment transport processes, and the majority of the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficients (NSEs) were larger than 0.60 between the calculated and measured hydrographs of water discharge, water level and sediment concentration at different sections, with the maximum value up to 0.96; the calculated erosion and accretion widths of the riverbanks closely agreed with the measured data, and the absolute errors between the calculated and measured post-flood reach-scale bankfull widths were 18 m in 2018 and 14 m in 2006, with the relative errors of 1.7% and 1.3%; the effects of riverbank deformation on sediment discharge, flow velocity and channel deformation were also analyzed, which indicate that the module of riverbank erosion and accretion can play a significant role in predicting hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes in the braided reach of the LYR. The purposes of this study were to quantify the influences of subsurface water flow at different depths on the rill erosion process. Laboratory experiments were carried out to measure sediment delivery under 5°, 10°, 15°, and 20° slope gradients, 2, 4, and 8 L min−1 flow rates and 0, 5, 10, and 15 cm subsurface water flow depths (SWFDs) below the soil surface at eight slope lengths of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 m. The results showed that the rill erosion prediction model is applicable to rills on purple soil slopes with subsurface water flow at different depths. The effect of the slope gradient on the sediment concentrations is greater than that of the flow rate under various SWFDs. Slopes with shallower subsurface water flow depths from the soil surface produced higher soil erosion and sediment delivery, and the sediment concentrations of rill erosion under the impacts of SWFDs of 5, 10, and 15 cm from the soil surface were 61%, 50%, and 41% of that of the saturated soil slope, respectively. Moreover, the rill erosion process can be well simulated with sediment concentration data from 1 to 4 or 1–8 m rill lengths when the maximum sediment concentration at the sediment transport capacity level is determined. Abstract: We examined runoff and sediment transport associated with large-scale construction projects in Fujian Province, China. Six experimental plots, comprised of four plot types, were designed to mimic typical conditions immediately following disturbance. It was found that natural vegetative cover reduces both runoff and erosion by approximately 36 and 7457 times over bare ground, and 16 and 1801 times over typically planted grasses, respectively. The increase in erosion associated with the replacement of native vegetation with bare ground or grasses due to large-scale infrastructure projects in Fujian from 1999 to 2004, amounted to an estimated loss of 1.76×107 tonnes of top soil and 3.04×108 m3 of surface runoff from the province during the bare soil construction phase, and an additional 4.25×106 tonnes of top soil and 1.35×108 m3 of surface runoff from the province associated with the first year of operation for each project. This has implications for frequency and occurrence of landslides and other geographic hazards, the transport of chemicals into waterways, the transport of goods through shipping passages, and the fertility of land in Fujian. Abstract: In order to assess the extent of sediment connectivity between uplands and lowlands and to quantify the processes of in-channel deposition and remobilization, measurements of suspended sediment fluxes were conducted in a nested rural catchment of the Mexican Volcanic Belt. Data were collected over one year at three upland sites (3 to 12km2) and two downstream stations (390–630km2). Our results show that a structural discontinuity in the catchment (i.e. abrupt slope decrease at the junction between piedmonts and the alluvial plain from 2 to 10% to<0.1%) could be compensated by functional continuity during floods. Direct conveyance of fine sediment to the outlet occurred when a high stream transport capacity was reached. Erosion of the streambed was observed on various occasions and accounted for up to 50% of the flux leaving the catchment during one event. Conversely, temporary in-channel storage was apparent on other occasions, amounting to up to 52% of the flux recorded upstream during one storm. These two distinct behaviours were approximately equally distributed along the rainy season and strongly driven by the extent of coupling between surface and subsurface water. This work indeed highlights the role of baseflow spatial variations in determining the extent of lowland sediment conveyance. Riverbed erosional processes occurred when large differences in pre-event baseflow values (i.e. at least a twofold longitudinal increase) were observed between the 5-km distant lowland stations. Abstract: The contributions and relationships of erosion by splash and overland flow over a steep slope in a Japanese beech forest in plots with different percentages of ground cover were examined. Three erosion plots (2m wide×5m long) with average understory coverage of 1%, 45%, and 94% were installed. Sediment transported by rain splash and by overland flow was sampled separately. For the plots with sparse, moderate, and high understory coverage, the average proportions of splash soil to total soil erosion during the monitoring period were 16%, 32%, and 18%, respectively. A significant correlation between the amount of splash soil and precipitation was found in the plots with 1% and 45% understory coverage, whereas no statistical relationship was identified for the plot with high understory coverage. At the sparse ground cover plot showing the largest sediment movement, the contribution of splash transport decreased with increasing precipitation. The amount of sheetwash erosion was significantly correlated with the amount of splash soil under the condition of sparse ground cover. This relationship was more pronounced during high precipitation events and the rainy season. Splash contribution to the sediment transport was in the range of 0.8%–76.7%, 2.8%–81% and 2.1%–60.8% for plot with high, moderate and low ground cover, respectively. The sparse ground cover showed the largest variation of splash and sheetwash contribution in soil erosion. This variability was due to variation in ground cover and soil surface wetness condition which led to a variation of detachment and non-linear relationship of sheetwash splash. Abstract: Pinpointing erosional ‘hot spots’ or sediment source areas within a watershed can be difficult because of the highly non-linear and episodic nature of effective runoff and sediment transport. Continuous monitoring of stream networks can provide insight into sediment source areas not possible from routine sampling by capturing episodic events and integrating entire storm events. This paper presents the results of a three-year study of spring snowmelt runoff in watersheds of Lake Tahoe, California, USA, using a network of nine nephelometric turbidometers. We estimate that montane badlands, comprising 1.2% of the Ward Creek watershed (25 km2), contributed 10–39% of snowmelt-derived suspended sediment load. The badlands are comprised of poorly-vegetated and deeply-incised gullies formed in parent material of Miocene volcanic mudflow breccia. The larger (29.5 km2) Blackwood Creek watershed also showed high relative erosion rates from volcanic terrain. Tributaries draining forested granitic and metasedimentary headwater regions had minimal sediment loads. Monitoring networks indicated that temporary main channel storage regulated release of fine sediment eroded from steep headwater slopes. This lag between erosion and delivery may lead to underestimation of gully erosion contribution to sediment budgets. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The water and sediment regulation schemes (WSRS) orientated by dams have profoundly adjusted the hydrological process and geomorphological evolution of the lower Yellow River and delta. Two decades since the implementation of WSRS, the observed multidisciplinary datasets allowed us to systematically evaluate the impacts of this unprecedented engineering effort on the river-coastal system. The sediment fluxes transported to the sea showed a notable rebounded and coarsened process due to the erosion of the riverbed during the WSRS periods. The average median grain size of suspended sediment increased from 17.7 μm in the 1990 s to 26 μm in 2002–2009. The natural rhythm of hydrological process is fundamentally altered by WSRS, about 50% and 30% of annual sediments and water delivered to the sea for only 20 days. The water discharge system is more temporally dynamic and complex with higher dimensionality after the operation of WSRS. The erosion pattern has been a dominant feature in all the channel segments downstream the Xiaolangdi Reservoir, with an average total erosion volume of 1.02 × 108 m3/a after the WSRS. However, the erosion efficiency of the lower river showed a decreased trend, due to the riverbed had formed a coarse armored substrate for the continued scouring since 2002. The YRD has changed from the pattern of erosion to progradation for the increase of sediment supply, and the average growth rate of subaerial delta was about 6.89 km2/a during 2003–2014. Abstract: The impact of unusual events on the sediment dynamics in rivers is discussed in this paper. The increase in the number of extreme precipitation events and other unusual weather events in Norway strongly suggests that weather conditions are changing. It is difficult to monitor sediment transport during large magnitude floods. It is however well known that they may deliver substantial amounts of sediment. The suspended sediment load in the upper Atna river during the springflood in 1995 was 44 times the mean load measured during the preceding years. The recurrence interval of this flood was estimated to be 100–200 years. The conditions during the occurrence of a particular flood event may also be of considerable importance and measurements during rainfall on frozen ground have indicated unusually high runoff and erosion rates. The seasonal distribution of runoff in several parts of Norway has changed in recent years and higher winter temperatures have produced an increase in the frequency of flood events. A very long lasting flood caused by a prolonged period of rain occurred in the Vikka stream during September to December 2000. The availability of sediment increased with the increasing soil moisture content in the area. As the ground became saturated, more active slope processes caused erosion rates to increase markedly. The combined effects of climate change and human impact on sediment transport in rivers appear to enhance downstream sediment delivery. Flood protection works along river channels prevent sediment from being deposited on the floodplain. River channels that have been lowered in order to reduce groundwater levels in agricultural floodplain areas will experience the same effect. During the last decade extensive ecological changes have taken place in the coastal areas of southern Norway as 90% of the sugar kelp forest has been lost. Estimating catchment scale soil loss based on rainfall simulators is often hampered by the difficulty to scale up simulator results. Our objective was to develop and test a method for estimating catchment scale soil loss based on observed rainfall using a variable intensity rainfall simulator in an erosion-sensitive catchment in semiarid Tunisia. A 7-year period, 1992–1999, with observed sedimentation amounts in a downstream reservoir was chosen to test a methodology. The methodology was based on (1) energy adjustment for the used simulator due to the difference in kinetic energy of simulated and natural rainfall at equal intensities and (2) upscaling of simulated erosion in which rill erosion was estimated by adjusting the difference between slope lengths for the plots versus the catchment after onset of runoff. The comparison between calculated soil loss from rainfall simulator experiments and observed sedimentation in the downstream reservoir displayed good overall results. Calculated soil loss was found to be about 96%, 36%, and 80% for different observed subperiods, respectively. The observed low value for the second period was probably due an exceptionally intense rainfall event during this period, which appears to have led to gully erosion, soil slide, and riverbank collapse. Therefore, during this event, siltation in the reservoir may essentially be due to unaccounted erosion processes such as gully erosion. Overall, however, it appears that plot-scale variable intensity rainfall simulators can rather successfully estimate catchment scale soil losses. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• It is essential to utilize diverse sources of observational data for the validation of long-term morphological simulations. • The multiple underlayer settings of the Delft3D model enable its acquisition of decadal bed layer stratigraphy. • Wind and waves sort sediment based on grain size, smoothing out morphological changes induced by tides. • Sea level rise significantly influences regions characterized by intricate morphological features. • Radial sand ridges form under a radial regime with low tidal ellipticity, abundant sand, and minor cohesive sediment. The tidal sand ridges in the southwestern Yellow Sea are unique in the world characterized by radial morphology, significantly higher elevation above low water level, and fine-grained sediment deposits. Using a numerical model, we examined the morphological evolution of the radial sand ridge system from 1979 to 2059. The model was calibrated and validated using hydrodynamic and sediment transport data, seabed topography, and grain size distributions from sediment cores. Our findings reveal that tidal force is the primary driver of the ridges' evolution, and they will continue to expand in response to sediment supply from the abandoned Yellow River delta and the Yangtze delta, with the latter contributing more. The ridges are mainly composed of fine sand and mud, with finer sediment dominating in the north and coarser sediment dominating in the south. Wind and waves sort sediment, depositing sand on ridges and fine sediment in channels, leading to erosion of higher elevated lands and filling of deep channels. Sea-level rise increases regional erosion, which has a large impact on areas with complex morphology. The 500-year morphological evolution of sand ridge systems, simulated through an idealized model, illustrated that the formation of radial sand ridges is dependent upon specific conditions such as the radial tidal regime, sufficient sediment sand, and the presence of cohesive sediment. This study deepens our understanding of the long-term prediction of coastal morphology and interpretation of seabed stratigraphy, and offers insights for effective coastal management. Abstract: Distributed erosion models are potentially good tools for locating soil sediment sources and guiding efficient Soil and Water Conservation (SWC) planning, but the uncertainty of model predictions may be high. In this study, the distribution of erosion within a catchment was predicted with a semi-empirical erosion model that combined a semi-distributed hydrological model with the Morgan, Morgan and Finney (MMF) empirical erosion model. The model was tested in a small catchment of the West Usambara Mountains (Kwalei catchment, Tanzania). Soil detachability rates measured in splash cups (0.48–1.16gJ−1) were close to model simulations (0.30–0.35gJ−1). Net erosion rates measured in Gerlach troughs (0.01–1.05kgm−2 per event) were used to calibrate the sediment transport capacity of overland flow. Uncertainties of model simulations due to parameterisation of overland flow sediment transport capacity were assessed with the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) methodology. The quality of the spatial predictions was assessed by comparing the simulated erosion pattern with the field-observed erosion pattern, measuring the agreement with the weighted Kappa coefficient of the contingency table. Behavioural parameter sets (weighted Kappa >0.50) were those with short reinfiltration length (<1.5m) and ratio of overland flow power α to local topography power γ close to 0.5. In the dynamic Hortonian hydrologic regime and the dissected terrain of Kwalei catchment, topography controlled the distribution of erosion more than overland flow. Simulated erosion rates varied from −4 to +2kgm−2 per season. The model simulated correctly around 75% of erosion pattern. The uncertainty of model predictions due to sediment transport capacity was high; around 10% of the fields were attributed to either slight or severe erosion. The difficult characterisation of catchment-scale effective sediment transport capacity parameters poses a major limit to distributed erosion modelling predicting capabilities. • Airborne material moves downstream during fall through flow. • Contribution airborne material generally ignored in sheet and interril experiments. • Contribution airborne material high in very shallow flows. • Dominant transport mechanism in deeper flows no longer operate in shallow flows. Soil material lifted by raindrop impacting flows a few millimetres deep are transported downstream as they fall back to the soil surface. That occurs not only with material that is lifted and remains in the flow, but also material lifted into the air that falls onto the surface of the flow. The amount lifted into the air varies with flow depth and the effect of the input from airborne material on sediment discharged by rain-impacted flows is not normally taken into account in experiments on, or models of, sheet and interrill erosion where flows are more than 1 mm deep. However, in very shallow flows, the airborne input to rain-impacted flows is high and the dominant transport mechanisms the operate in deeper flows no longer operate effectively. • Under the action of concentrated flow, the change of surface runoff of karst gently sloping farmland is mainly controlled by the magnitude of concentrated flow. • Under the action of concentrated flow, the underground runoff of karst gentle slope farmland is significantly negatively correlated with the slope. • Concentrated flow can lead to severe soil erosion in karst gently sloping farmland. Exposed bedrock in karst areas considerably alters runoff paths causing partial runoff to converge into a concentrated flow, which is a potential source of soil erosion risk. However, research is lacking on how concentrated flow affects regional soil erosion. In this study, the surface and underground dual structure in karst areas was simulated in a steel tank. Combined with runoff plot monitoring, the runoff conversion process and erosion characteristics of gently sloping farmland in karst areas under different water discharge rates were examined through indoor concentrated flow discharge scouring tests, and the influence of concentrated flow changes on the runoff spatial distribution and sediment yield in gently sloping farmland was clarified. The results demonstrated the following: (i) there existed a significant positive correlation between surface runoff and the water discharge rate (p < 0.01); the partial correlation coefficient value reached 0.87. The higher the water discharge rate, the more surface runoff formation was facilitated. (ii) When the slope remained the same, the underground runoff was relatively high at 3 L/min. Given the same discharge, a significant negative correlation between underground runoff and slope was found (p < 0.05); the partial correlation coefficient value reached −0.71. (iii) In response to a water discharge rate of 5 L/min, surface soil erosion was serious, and the maximum sediment transport modulus was 174.088 g/min∙m2. A significant cubic function relationship existed between the scouring time and surface sediment yield. Overall, a critical flow rate occurred between 3 and 5 L/min, which controlled changes in surface runoff, subsurface runoff and surface sediment yield. Under highly concentrated flow, drastic soil erosion could occur. These results can provide a scientific basis for the control and prevention of concentrated flow-induced erosion in karst areas. Here, the effective sediment size distribution (undispersed) and its dynamics during sheet erosion on different eroded lands (non, moderately and very-severely eroded) were studied under field rainfall simulation on five types of soils (Calcic Luvisols, Ferric Luvisols, Plinthic Alisols, Plinthic Acrisols and Acric Ferralsols) formed separately on loess deposits, quaternary red clays and basalt from temperate to tropical climate. The rainfalls at the intensities of 45 and 90 mm h−1 were simulated on pre-wetted bare fallow plots (3 × 0.8 m2, 10° slope). The effect of erosion degree on the effective sediment size showed a unimodal trend from temperate Luvisols to tropic Ferralsols, coupled with the influence of rainfall intensity to a varying extent. Under the low-intensity rainfall, except for Ferralsol, the moderate erosion degree increased the sediment size by −49% to 72% relative to non-eroded lands, in contrast to a decrease of 6–64% for the very-severe erosion degree. The high-intensity rainfall was shown to lessen the erosion degree effect for Luvisols, magnify it for Alisol, and change it to positive for Acrisol. Sediment transport was dominated by suspension-saltation of <0.10 mm size fraction for Luvisols regardless of erosion degree due to the weak soil structure, and shifted from both rolling (0.5–2 mm) and suspension-saltation on the non/moderately eroded lands to only suspension-saltation on the very-severely eroded lands for the other soil types. Rainfall intensity, pH and bulk density contributed jointly to sediment size (Adj-R2 = 0.76, p < 0.001), and exchangeable sodium showed a positive effect on its temporal variation (Adj-R2 = 0.36, p < 0.001). The varying effects of land degradation by erosion on sediment size and transport mechanism at the soil pedon and regional scales merit consideration in land management and rehabilitation as well as erosion modeling. In this paper, we examine the effect of vegetation on soil erosion, runoff generation and sediment transport on saline rangeland hillslopes. Rainfall simulations were conducted at a fixed 114 mm/h intensity on 6 m × 2 m erosion plots with varying degrees of vegetation. Plots were grouped into three categories (L, M and H) based on their canopy cover (L: <5%, M: 5–19%, H: >19%) and selected to limit variations in slope across canopy cover groups. Runoff and sediment samples were combined with three dimensional (3D) reconstruction data used to monitor soil surface microtopographic changes. Runoff initiation was significantly delayed on the L plots but cumulative runoff after 20 min of rainfall simulation indicated a positive effect of vegetation on infiltration processes. Cumulative sediment after 20 min of rainfall was similar across vegetation cover categories. The 3D data suggest that vegetation reduced net sediment delivery from the plots by primarily increasing opportunities for deposition while marginally affecting gross soil erosion. Plots with H vegetation cover experienced lower 3D-estimated erosion volumes but average erosion depth on L plots was lower than that on plots with M and H vegetation covers. Lower runoff volumes on M and H plots may have been compensated by greater runoff erosivity on these plots as runoff was concentrated in a narrower inter-patch space compared to L plots. • Mass movement is an important erosion mode and sediment source in gully network. • Mass movement increased sediment concentration and led to peak sediment concentration. • Mass movement was prone to be triggered by rainfall with a medium-duration and moderate-intensity. • Rainfall amount and slope gradiet determined the trigger and total volume of mass movement. Mass movement erosion on the gully sidewalls is recognized as an important erosion mode and sediment source in hilly and gully watersheds. However, the trigger of mass movement erosion and transport of gravity-detached material remain poorly understood. A series of rainfall simulation experiments were conducted on six loess gully sidewall models, with a height (1 m), three rainfall (60 mm, 48 mm and 24 mm) and two slope gradients (70° and 80°), to quantitatively explore the sensitivity factor and transport mechanisms of mass movement. Results revealed that the accumulation volume and initiation of the mass failure were significantly influenced by rainfall amount. The accumulative volume of failure events was observed to increase in a linear pattern with increasing rainfall amount. The minimum cumulative rainfalls for the initiation of mass failure on the loess gully sidewalls were approximately 43.6, 28.2 and 65.6 mm for short-duration and high-intensity, medium-duration and moderate-intensity and short-duration and moderate-intensity rainfalls, respectively. This implied that the initiation of mass failure was more prone to rainfall events with a medium-duration and moderate-intensity than those with a high intensity and short duration. Rainfall amount and initial slope gradient were the most sensitive elements driving the number and volume of the mass movement erosion. Mass movement erosion raised sediment concentration, but the eroded material was unable to be transported by runoff in a timely manner. Average sediment concentrations at the model outlet increased by 1.9–11.9 times following the occurrence of mass failures compared to those before. A low instantaneous sediment delivery ratio of 0.032 for the mass movement erosion. The experimental findings help comprehend the influence of mass movement erosion on sediment supply on the gully sidewall in the hilly and gully network, i.e. the Loess Plateau. • Susceptibility of surface to detachment always limits raindrop driven erosion. • Sediment transport associated with drop impact is always a limiting factor. • Raindrop driven erosion is both detachment and transport limited at the same time. Soil erosion involves two liked processes, detachment of particles held within the soil surface by cohesive forces and inter-particle friction, and the transport of the detached material away from the site of detachment. It is commonly thought that erosion is either detachment limited or transport limited but this is not true for surfaces where raindrop driven sediment transport occurs. When detachment occurs by raindrop impact, transport away from the site of detachment can occur in the air and in rain-impacted flow. Splash transports both fine and coarse particles aerially. In rain impacted flows, fine material travels in completed suspension and at velocities that are at, or near the velocity of the flow. Coarse material may travel by raindrop induced saltation and rolling, or if flow conditions are appropriate, by flow driven saltation and rolling. Transport by splash and by raindrop induced saltation and rolling ceases when raindrop impact ceases even if previously detached material has not been discharged. Consequently, sediment transport limits erosion whenever raindrop impact is involved in transporting detached soil material over the soil surface. However, the amount of material available for transport is controlled by the ability of the impacting raindrops to cause detachment and the ability of the cohesive soil surface to resist detachment. Consequently, the discharged of coarse material by rain-impacted flows is both detachment limited and transport limited at the same time. Raindrop driven erosion is a complex process and the spatial and temporal variations in the transport mechanisms need to be considered when experiments involving raindrop driven erosion experiments are designed and the results analysed. The Zohreh River Delta is one of the largest deltaic plains along the northern coast of the Persian Gulf. This delta is located near an international navigation corridor, which is affected by long-term delta progradation. Therefore, the research objectives of this study were to determine the coastal sedimentary processes of the Zohreh River Delta and to detect the evolutionary trend of the deltaic plain at the northern Persian Gulf. The research method was formulated to achieve objectives herein, including field measurements, numerical modeling, remote sensing and laboratory analyses. The results showed that flash floods and turbidity currents transport sediment to the deltaic area, and tidal currents play an important role in sediment redistribution and in the high diversity of sedimentary facies. Flood plains, tidal flats, crevasse splays, nebka, and sabkha are the most important sedimentary facies in the study area. Gypsum and salt crystal are frequently grown in supratidal and intertidal zones because of a dominantly arid climate. The river and tidal currents are responsible for an annual sediment transport of 321,310 m³, while the sediment transport by littoral drift is calculated to be 81,000 m³ annually. MIKE-21 (a coastal modeling software) revealed that 80% of the sediment is transferred into the subtidal zone and the remaining 20% is deposited at the river mouth. Applications of GIS tools showed that the mean annual sedimentation rate at the river mouth and the long-term shoaling rate have been 0.07 m and 2.45 m, respectively. The rate of long-term progradation of the delta implies an increase of sediment supply from the catchment area due to land use changes and river bank erosion. A key part of this research is presenting the implications of the permanent shoaling trend which is prograding toward the international shipping corridor at the north of the Persian Gulf. Our results show that at a given river water discharge, greater river suspended sediment was evacuated during the pre–monsoon season (April–Mid June) relative to other seasons in the cold NE Tibetan catchments. In contrast, no such phenomenon was observed in the warm, non–permafrost regions. These comparisons likely indicate a center role of freeze–thaw processes on loose sediment generation, which enhanced sediment output. Hydrometeorological records show up to ∼2 °C warming in the NE Tibetan Plateau since the past 30 years, coupled with an 8-fold increase in sediment transport. Abstract: Our goal is to develop a model capable to discern the response of a watershed to different erosion mechanisms. We propose a framework that integrates a geomorphic component into the physically-based and spatially distributed TIN-based Real-time Integrated Basin Simulator (tRIBS) model. The coupled model simulates main erosive processes of hillslopes (raindrop impact detachment, overland flow entrainment, and diffusive processes) and channel (erosion and deposition due to the action of water flow). In addition to the spatially distributed, dynamic hydrologic variables, the model computes the sediment transport discharge and changes in elevation, which feedback to hydrological dynamics through local changes of terrain slope, aspect, and drainage network configuration. The model was calibrated for the Lucky Hills basin, a semi-arid watershed nested in the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed (Arizona, USA). It is demonstrated to be capable of reproducing main runoff and sediment yield events and accumulated volumes over the long term. The model was also used to study the response of two first-order synthetic basins representative of landforms dominated by fluvial and diffusive erosion processes to a 100-year long stationary climate. The analysis of the resultant slope-contributing area relationships for the two synthetic basins illustrates that the model is consistent with assumed principles of behavior and capable of reproducing the main mechanisms of erosion. Abstract In many Mediterranean areas, citrus orchards exhibit high soil loss rates because of the expansion of drip irrigation that allows cultivation on sloping terrain and the widespread use of glyphosate. To mitigate these non-sustainable soil losses, straw mulch could be applied as an efficient solution but this has been poorly studied. Therefore, the main goal of this paper was to assess the use of straw mulch as a tool to reduce soil losses in clementine plantations, which can be considered representative of a typical Mediterranean citrus orchard. A total of 40 rainfall simulation experiments were carried out on 20 pairs of neighbouring bare and mulched plots. Each experiment involved applying 38.8 mm of rain at a constant rate over 1 h to a circular plot of 0.28 m2 circular plots. The results showed that a cover of 50% of straw (60 g m−2) was able to delay the time to ponding from 32 to 52 s and the time to runoff initiation from 57 to 129 s. Also, the mulching reduced the runoff coefficient from 65.6 to 50.5%. The effect on sediment transport was even more pronounced, as the straw mulch reduced the sediment concentration from 16.7 g l−1 to 3.6 g l−1 and the soil erosion rates from 439 g to 73 g. Our results indicated that mulching can be used as a useful management practice to control soil erosion rates due to the immediate effect on high soil detachment rate and runoff initiation reduction in conventional clementine orchards on sloping land, by slowing down runoff initiation and by reducing runoff generation and, especially, sediment losses. We indirectly concluded that straw mulch is also a sustainable solution in glyphosate-treated citrus plantations. Abstract San Juan Coal Company reclaimed 743 ha at its La Plata Mine using the GeoFluv™ fluvial geomorphic reclamation design method from 1999 through 2008 to achieve long-term stability against erosion (no major slope blowouts and rill and gully formation), reduced maintenance, and increased biodiversity as compared to traditional reclamation methods (e.g. terrace, berm, and downdrain designs). Qualitative inspections of the completed reclamation confirmed the fluvial geomorphic reclamation method benefits. In the fall of 2011, the company began implementing a research study to quantify the sediment production rate from these geomorphic landforms and surrounding undisturbed native lands. Data were acquired from subwatersheds differentiated as native (undisturbed by mining), fluvial geomorphic design with topdressing and poorly established vegetation, and fluvial geomorphic design with topdressing and significant vegetation establishment. The three subwatersheds were selected to ensure similar size, aspect, and slope and were located close together to minimize storm variation effects. Temporary check-dam-type sediment control structures designed to impound runoff from a 2-yr, 1-h storm were installed at each subwatershed outlet. Erosion pins in the impounded area facilitated sediment deposition measurement. Precipitation was recorded by the La Plata Mine Meteorological Station and supplemental site-specific precipitation gauges. Precipitation sufficient to cause sediment transport provided data for the end of the 2012, all of the 2013, and the beginning of the 2014 water years. The site data provided direct relationships between sediment production and precipitation. The sediment yield from the undisturbed native site was 9.53 t ha−1 yr−1, while the fluvial geomorphic design with topdressing and poorly established vegetation site averaged 13% lower than the native site, and the fluvial geomorphic design with topdressing and significant vegetation establishment averaging 41% lower sediment yield than the native site. Land-disturbing activities that can accelerate erosion and sediment yield will accompany global population growth. The results of this study indicate that use of this land reclamation method can mitigate erosion and sediment yield increases associated with that growth.
