In 1996 we initiated a study to evaluate several techniques for measuring light under broadleaf canopies. Hourly average photosynthetic photon flux density and percent transmittance were measured 1 m above the ground at four points in each of three canopy densities created by a spacing experiment in a 35-year-old paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) dominated stand located near Prince George, B.C. At each point, fisheye photographs were taken and LAI-2000 plant canopy analyzer (LAI-2000), spherical densiometer, and competition index (Lorimer'sindex) measurements were made. Percent transmittance measurements onan overcast day (1-h average), transmittance measured over periods of 3 h or longer on a clear day, LAI-2000 diffuse noninterceptance measurements, and gap light index determined from fisheye photographs were strongly correlated with growing season percent transmittance (r2>= 0.96) as was competition index (r2 = 0.928). Concave spherical densiometer measurements and midday percent transmittance measurements on clear days were also well correlated with measured percent transmittance (r2>= 0.89). Estimates of understory light by the LITE model were strongly correlated with growing season percent transmittance. Correlations improved with increasing length of the period simulated (r2 = 0.755 for a point measurement on a clear day; r2 = 0.936 for an entire sunny day;and, r2 = 0.953 for the entire growing season). Climate change interacts with ecological processes leading to changes in tree and forest growth rate, biome shifts and species composition, all of which are influenced by disturbances. This study explores future overarching climate trends of eight of Canada's ecozones containing managed forests. For the 2071 to 2100 period, climate projections indicate a warming trend of up to an additional 5.5 °C and an overall increase in annual precipitation. Future trends suggest marked contrast between coastal and interior forests and polarization between western and eastern forests. Warmer temperatures, accumulating degree-days above 5 °C and frost-free days suggest longer and drier growing seasons and greater risk of drought particularly in moisture-limited areas such as montane cordillera, taiga shield and boreal shield ecozones. Warmer temperatures and rising precipitation combined with less snow suggest shorter and wetter future winters. This indicates greater risk of rain-on-snow and freeze-thaw events, flooding and landslides particularly in coastal ecozones. We discuss how these projections are likely to result in shifts in dominant species and abundance, which when coupled with the cumulative effects of future disturbances, is likely to alter future forest dynamics and impact harvestable wood volumes for Canada's forestry industry. Information about post-disturbance regeneration success and successional dynamics is critical to predict forest ecosystem resistance and resilience to disturbances and climate change. Our objective was to identify and classify post-disturbance empirical research conducted by the Canadian Forest Service (CFS) of Natural Resources Canada and their collaborators to provide guidance on future research needs, improving our understanding of post-disturbance recovery in a Canadian context. To achieve our objective, we collected and classified peer-reviewed and non-published literature produced by the CFS between 1998 and 2020 that concerned post-disturbance ecology. We focused on research addressing natural or anthropogenic disturbances, such as wildfires, pest outbreaks, windthrows, forest management, seismic lines, and those that studied processes related to soil, vegetation, fauna, hydrology, and microbial communities. We found that forest harvesting was the disturbance most studied by CFS between 1998 and 2020, followed by fire. Despite the fact that large, forested areas are affected annually by pests, studies on recovery after pest outbreaks were scarce. Other disturbances, such as mining and seismic lines or other abiotic disturbances were rare in CFS literature. Most studies (70%) examined changes in vegetation related to forest management and fire and they were mainly focussed on post-disturbance tree regeneration success. Post-disturbance changes in understory species diversity were also well-studied. Our results provide a geographic overview of CFS research on post-disturbance recovery in Canada and enable the identification of key knowledge gaps. Notably, research focusing on recovery after natural disturbances was underrepresented in the assessed literature compared to studies centered around harvesting. Long-term research sites, chronosequences that substitute space for time, and studies focused on consecutive disturbances are especially important to maintain and establish sustainable forest management strategies in the face of climate change. The term “aboriginal forestry” is used increasingly to describe the evolving role of First Nations peoples in Canadian forestry over the last 30 years. This paper reviews a diversity of experiences and identifies issues that have important implications for governments, forest planners, and First Nations: a forestry regime that reflects the interests of governments and industry rather than those of First Nations; variable implementation of aboriginal rights in forestry practice; benefits and problems of economic partnerships; limitations on consultation, traditional knowledge, and comanagement in forestry; and finally, different forestry paradigms. Among these experiences and issues, we recognise different visions for the participation of First Nations peoples in Canadian forestry. At one end of the spectrum, “forestry excluding First Nations” is no longer accepted. The most common form may be “forestry by First Nations,” representing a role for First Nations within existing forestry regimes. Other options include “forestry for First Nations,” in which forest managers seek to incorporate aboriginal values and knowledge in management activities and “forestry with First Nations,” in which aboriginal peoples are equal partners in forest management. However, aboriginal forestry is better understood as a potential new form of forestry that uses knowledge and techniques drawn from both traditions and conventional forestry and is based on aboriginal rights, values, and institutions. Au Canada, le terme « foresterie autochtone »gagne en popularité pour décrire le rôle grandissant des Premières nations en foresterie au cours des trente dernières années. Cet article passe en revue de nombreuses expériences et identifie des enjeux aux conséquences importantes pour les gouvernements, les gestionnaires forestiers et les Premières nations. Un régime forestier qui reflète les intérêts des gouvernements et des industriels plutôt que ceux des Premières nations, la reconnaissance inégale des droits autochtones dans les pratiques forestières, les bénéfices et les problèmes associés aux partenariats d’affaires, les limites propres à la consultation, la place des savoirs traditionnels et de la cogestion en foresterie et enfin, la variété des paradigmes forestiers composent ces enjeux. The knowledge of natural disturbance dynamics and preindustrial landscapes is essential to implement sustainable forest management. Recent findings identify the lack of a forest dynamics model, different from the standard cyclic model of Baskerville (1975. For. Chron. 51: 138–140), for balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) ecosystems of maritime eastern Canada. With the use of historical forest maps and dendrochronology, we reconstructed the range of variability of the preindustrial landscape (6798 km2) and inferred on the natural disturbance dynamics of the balsam fir forest of Anticosti Island. The preindustrial landscape was characterized by a forest matrix of overmature softwood stands with inclusions of younger softwood stands ranging from 0.1 to 7837 ha in size. Widespread stand-initiating events were apparently rare in the preindustrial landscape over the last 160 years. Since our results were not well represented by the cyclic model, which predicts the occurrence of a mosaic of stands in different age classes, we proposed an alternative forest dynamics model for eastern balsam fir ecosystems near the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Forest management inspired by this alternative model may be more appropriate to maintain or restore ecological characteristics of balsam fir forests of this region within their range of natural variability. La connaissance de la dynamique des perturbations naturelles et des paysages préindustriels est essentiel à la réalisation de l’aménagement forestier durable. Des travaux récents ont identifié le besoin d’un nouveau modèle de dynamique forestière, différent du modèle cyclique standard de Baskerville (1975. For. Chron. 51 : 138–140), pour les sapinières (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) maritimes de l’est du Canada. Au moyen de l’analyse de cartes forestières historiques et de la dendrochronologie, nous avons reconstruit les limites de variabilité du paysage préindustriel (6 798 km2) et inféré sur la dynamique naturelle des perturbations des sapinières de l’île d’Anticosti. Le paysage préindustriel était caractérisé par une matrice de peuplements résineux surannés avec des inclusions de peuplements résineux plus jeunes, d’une superficie variant de 0,1 à 7 837 ha. L’occurrence de perturbations initiatrices de nouveaux peuplements semble avoir été faible durant les derniers 160 ans. tant donné que les résultats ne sont pas bien représentés par le modèle cyclique, qui prédit l’occurrence d’une mosaïque de peuplements d’âges différents, nous proposons un modèle alternatif de dynamique forestière pour les sapinières de l’est du Canada localisées près du golfe du Saint-Laurent. Reports that forest policymakers in Canada are considering the allowable cut effect (ACE) as a potential mechanism to provide tenure holders with incentives to practice enhanced forest management. To investigate the incentives created by the ACE, this paper estimates returns to ACE investments for a trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) - white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) mixedwood forest in Alberta. A timber supply model is used to optimize harvesting schedules to maximize net present values over a 200-year planning horizon. A number of scenarios are investigated with variations in intensity of silvicultural investments, beginning age-class distributions, levels of flexibility around the allowable annual cut (AAC), calculations of AACs based on coniferous and mixedwood volumes, and green-up constraints. In our simulations, it was difficult to find positive returns to the ACE. Positive returns only occurred when operating under harvesting constraints with a mature starting forest and AAC calculations that ignored deciduous volumes. In those limited cases where there were positive returns to the ACE, returns were higher for extensive, rather than intensive investments. Combining these results with other potential impediments to the ACE, previously identified in the literature, the probability of tenure holders having incentives to undertake ACE investments is low.

This paper examines the impact that climatic change over the last millennium has had on aggradation and degradation of permafrost peatlands and the associated change in organic matter accumulation. Permafrost reached its southernmost Holocene extent in boreal continental western Canada during the Little Ice Age with 28 800 km2 of permafrost peatland present within a sensitive zone demarcated by permafrost degradation. Subsequent degradation of permafrost has occurredin response to warming, with forested bogs changing to nonforested poor fens, associated with rising water levels. In conjunction with this ecosystem change, long-term net organic matter accumulation increases. As permafrost is in disequilibrium with climate, much of the permafrost that remains is in a relict state. Mapping of past and present permafrost distribution from peatland landforms indicates only 9% has degraded since the Little Ice Age, resulting in a 5% increase in long-term net organic matter accumulation. Of the permafrost that remains, 22% is in disequilibrium, located largely in the northern part of the sensitive zone. Additional loss of forested lands will occur inthe future in boreal continental western Canada under present-day climatic conditions as permafrost approaches equilibrium, with a further 11% increase in long-term net organic matter accumulation predicted. This research note presents the results of a bibliometric analysis that was conducted to better understand the impact that Sustainable Forest Management Network (SFMN) funded research had in the forest-related social and Aboriginal research communities. We applied two indicators of research impact: (i) research outputs and (ii) citations. Our results suggest that the SFMN's research outputs were highest in the fields of economics, sociology, and political science and law. The number of research articles that acknowledged the SFMN was 30% of the total research output of the SFMN-funded Principal Investigators. These articles represented 3% of the social science articles published in the Forestry Chronicle (the journal most frequently used by SFMN-funded Principal Investigators). Research output related to Aboriginal forestry indicated that the SFMN had a significant influence on the development of the field. Our citation analysis indicated that the average number of citations per SFMN-acknowledged publication in the social sciences was approximately the same as the international impact standard in the field. These results suggest that the SFMN-funded research in the social sciences compared very well with the international research standards in forest-related social sciences. Cette note de recherche expose les résultats d'une analyse bibliométrique effectuée afin de mieux comprendre l'impact des projets de recherche financés par le Réseau de gestion durable des forêts (RGDF) au sein des communautés scientifiques préoccupées par les aspects sociaux et les enjeux autochtones en foresterie. Nous avons utilisés deux types d'indicateurs pour mesurer l'impact de la recherche : (i) la production scientifique et (ii) les citations. Nos résultats montrent que la production scientifique du RGDF est la plus prolifique dans les domaines de l'économique, de la sociologie, de la science politique et du droit. Le nombre d'articles scientifiques qui reconnaissent la contribution du RGDF 30 % de la production totale des chercheurs principaux financés par le RGDF. Ces articles constituent 3 % des articles en sciences sociales publiés dans le Forestry Chronicle (la publication la plus fréquemment utilisée par les chercheurs principaux financés par le RGDF). La production scientifique reliée à la foresterie autochtone montre que le RGDF a eu une influence marquante sur le développement du domaine. Ten-year height data from 232 open-pollinated interior spruce families tested in five seed planning zones located in north-central interior British Columbia were used to investigate the extent and pattern of genotype by environment (G×E) interaction and to examine the validity of the seed planning zone delineation in this region. The G×E interaction in the entire region was both statistically and practically significant, with an estimated type b genetic correlation coefficient of 0.64. The detected geographic pattern of the G×E interaction indicates that the old delineation is overly conservative, and consolidating the five old zones into the two new zones is a valid decision. A procedure was developed to convert the expected genetic gain, with respect to the old zone, to the new zone when seed from a rogued local seed orchard is used for reforestation in the entire new zone. A similar procedure was also proposed to predict the breeding value of an individual that was only tested in the old zone of its origin with respect to the new zone. Soluble organic N (SON) is recognized to be a source of N for plants, but the few studies of the effects of clear-cut harvesting on SON levels have reported inconsistent results. SON and soluble inorganic N (SIN) contents were measured in 1 mol/L KCl extracts of soil from forests and clearcuts in coastal cedar–hemlock forests near Port McNeill, B.C., and in high-elevation spruce–fir forests near Sicamous, B.C. To characterize the seedling root environment, sampling was confined to the top 20 cm of soil (consisting of forest floor at Port McNeill and forest floor plus mineral soil at Sicamous). Amino acid N and microbial N were determined on subsets of the samples. At both sites, SON content tended to be lower in clearcuts than in forests. Lower SON contents in clearcuts were caused by the removal of F-layer forest floor at Port McNeill and by reduced SON concentrations in the forest floor at Sicamous. Correlation analyses indicated close relationships between moisture content, SIN, SON, and microbial N. Changes in SON, SIN, and microbial N concentrations during buried bag incubations could not be explained simply by exchange among these three N pools. Headwater streams, varying in flow persistence from ephemeral to intermittent to perennial, provide the tightest coupling between water and land, yet they often receive the least protection during forest management. We described communities of aquatic insects in perennial, intermittent, and ephemeral channels surrounded by old-growth forest and 4- to 8-year-old clearcuts in Clayoquot Sound, British Columbia, to determine whether temporary streams have unique aquatic communities and to examine the short-term impacts of harvesting. We measured flow persistence, stream size, canopy cover, organic detritus, and algal biomass in 19 streams. We sampled aquatic invertebrates with a combination of emergence cages and kicknet samples. Temporary and old-growth streams had more organic detritus and a higher abundance of shredders. Perennial and clearcut streams had a higher abundance of some algal grazers, but not higher algal biomass. Insect richness was similar in intermittent and perennial streams of each seral stage but lower in ephemeral streams. Intermittent streams contained four taxa not found in the other stream classes; perennial and ephemeral streams had none. Communities of aquatic insects differed between streams surrounded by clearcuts and old growth, and varied with continuity of flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have characterized canopy geometry and light transmission by the nine dominant conifer and broad-leaved tree species of the interior cedar-hemlock (ICH) forests of northern British Columbia. Our field data were used to parameterize a spatially explicit model of light transmission through mixed-species forests. That model, a component of the forest dynamics simulator SORTIE, was developed for eastern deciduous forests, and this paper presents a test of that model in a very different ecosystem. Our results show that individual crowns of the ICHforests intercepted much more light than species of eastern deciduous forests but that the canopy as a whole allowed greater light penetration, largely because of openings between the relatively narrow, conical crowns of the western conifers. Light transmission by individualcrowns was correlated with shade tolerance among the conifers (as ineastern deciduous species), but crown depth was not (in contrast with eastern species). Despite the fundamental differences in the natureof light transmission in the two ecosystems, the SORTIE light model developed for eastern deciduous forests was effective at predicting spatial variation in understory light levels in these western coniferous forests. The goodness of fit of such a simple model suggests that the most important factors regulating spatial variation in understorylight levels in these forests are simply the sizes and distribution of nearby trees, and the local sky brightness distribution. On 14 April 1994, the British Columbia government announced a new stumpage formula that, at then-expected product prices, increased the average charge by about $12/m3 and more than doubled the rate at which stumpage fees change when lumber prices change. Most of the increased revenues are reinvested in the forest sector by a new organization, Forest Renewal British Columbia (FRBC), created specifically for that purpose. Using standard event-study methodologies, this paper documents the net effect of the fee increases and new policy direction on British Columbia forest products companies. After controlling for firm-specific risk and the decline in the Toronto Stock Exchange that occurred at about the same time, the new stumpage policy extracted about $1.0 billion from shareholders of the firms studied, andperhaps $2.4 billion from all licencees (an amount roughly equal to the capitalized after-tax cost of the higher fees). The impact on individual firms is highly correlated with the allowable annual cut (AAC) in replaceable licenses each holds, with an average impact of about$33.3/m3 of AAC. The market appears to have discounted both the good news about offsets in impending timber-supply reductions that the creation of FRBC implies and the reductions in earnings riskthat the new stumpage system provides. When added to the increased regulatory costs associated with the new provincial Forest Practice Code, the timber-fee increases appear to have fully depleted the value of holding British Columbia timber quotas. We studied the short-term impact of cutting with the protection of regeneration (CPR) on ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) and its habitat.Drumming males were surveyed in the boreal forest of western Quebec between 1990 and 1994 in 5 control stands and 10 stands that were cutin 1992. Cutting caused a 50% decline in total density and basal area of trees. In harvested stands, shrubs were less abundant than in control stands. Lateral cover between 1 and 2 m and canopy closure werealso lower in cut stands. In the harvested stands, the density varied between 14.1 and 22.6 drummers/km2 between 1990 and 1992before the CPR. In 1993, density declined to 10.1 but was reestablished at 21.5 in 1994. Densities did not differ significantly before orafter the CPR nor between cut and uncut stands (p > 0.05). After theCPR, the grouse generally established their drumming sites in the periphery of cut areas. There they found lateral cover and canopy closure similar to those measured in control stands by choosing sites where deciduous shrubs were more abundant than in the remainder of the stand. However, the characteristics of the tree stratum were not optimal; their overall density, that of Betulaceae, and that of Salicaceae were higher near drumming sites located in control stands than those in harvested stands. In harvested stands, drumming sites had a lower total basal area of trees, and namely that of deciduous trees, than in control sites. To maintain ruffed grouse populations immediately after cutting in mixed and deciduous stands of public lands, we suggestthat CPRs be in 15-ha blocks while maintaining a basal area of at least 7.5 m2/ha, half of which should be in trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.).
