This work aims to identify the rhetorical elements that are present in Vita Martini, from Sulpicio Severo, hagiographic text dating from fourth century of our era. We take as reference, to analyze the proposed theme, above all, the rhetorical art of Aristoteles, a work that deeply influenced posterior rhetorical systems, mainly with regard to the middle age. We also tried to highlight in the work in focus, the matrices of hagiographic genre that would develop, during the medieval period, considering the fact that Vita Martini is considered the first text of the genre in latin language. Historiography has discussed the multiple functions of hagiography, in addition to the systematization and recording of memories of holiness linked to a saint. Studies that analyze hagiographic texts in general, and, in particular, the lives of saints, have pointed out how such materials promote Christianity, with an emphasis on ideas and values consistent with each historical period. In this article, we chose women in the Iberian medieval period as the object of analysis. For the development of our reflections, we started from two works that relate the trajectory of two saints: the Vita Sancti Aemiliani, elaborated in the 7th century, and the Legend Beati Petri Gundisalvi, composed in the 13th century. In this sense, we propose a discussion on the social insertion of ecclesiastics and the role of women in the medieval peninsular. This article analyzes the text "Ecclesiastical Culture and Folklore in the Middle Ages: Saint Marcellus of Paris and the Dragon", originally published by Jacques Le Goff in 1970, one of the most important contributions of this author for the discussion of the relations between folkloric traditions, lay culture and clerical culture in the Middle Ages. The central ideas contained in it are examined here in the light of Le Goff's academic trajectory, emphasizing the investigative possibilities arising from the management of the hagiographic sources of the Early Middle Ages from the perspective of Historical Anthropology. The Vita Desiderii, work of the Visigoth king Sisebuto, who ruled between 612-621, was written around 615, exalting and chronicling the life and deeds of St. Desiderius, who belonged to the region of Burgundy, in the Frankish kingdom. Regarding the methodological issue, to approach the source we propose the use of Critical Discourse Analysis, favoring the connection between discursive practices and social structure. By orders of discourse, we understand the sets of conventions associated with social institutions within which the orders of discourse are ideologically shaped by relations of power, as well as within society as a whole. The current paper has as aim demonstrating that the hagiographic writing ought to be more complex and deeper than just describing the "life" of a saint man. Gestated and disseminated in socio-cultural environment which is dominated by the tradition and also by a symbolic vision of the world, this sort of source is fruit of a collective imaginary about its protagonist (the saint) and his environment. Thus, the historical relevance of the hagiography lies in the construction of a historical and human ideal (both necessarily founded in the sacrum). This ideal is what the Hagiography is interested in, which is permeated by existences founded in the mythical time and space, like the "heroic" Christian. Its concern to the historian sticks up to these circunstances instead of relegating them to the fantasy, once it builds the vision of the world of the hagiographic authors and their contemporary readers and listeners. This article presents partial findings from an ongoing study supported by FAPERJ entitled Hagiography, society and power: a comparative study of the visigothic and medieval Castilian production. This research have collective character and the main objective is to compare, in synchronic and diachronic perspective, four hagiographic texts produced in the Iberian peninsula, in different periods and contexts of the Middle Ages, namely, the visigothic kingdom and the Castile kingdom. The works in question are Vita Sancti Aemiliani (VSA), Vita Sancti Fructuoso (VF), Vita Dominici Siliensis (VDci) and Vida de San Millan de la Cogolla (VSM). In this paper, we chose to compare the Vita Sancti Fructuoso (VF) and the Vita Dominici Siliensis (VDci), since the set of hagiographies selected by the research, they relate directly to the monastic universe: Frutuoso, the protagonist of VF, and Domingo, the protagonist of VDci lived cenobitics' experiences. We are interested in focusing on the monastic communities and their members having as a central reference the links that were established from them with the kings and nobility. Observation the power relations imposed by these actors, we want to identify and analyze the various strategies that influence, oppress, control, resist, and, finally, interact each one with each other.
