Abstract

This article analyzes the text "Ecclesiastical Culture and Folklore in the Middle Ages: Saint Marcellus of Paris and the Dragon", originally published by Jacques Le Goff in 1970, one of the most important contributions of this author for the discussion of the relations between folkloric traditions, lay culture and clerical culture in the Middle Ages. The central ideas contained in it are examined here in the light of Le Goff's academic trajectory, emphasizing the investigative possibilities arising from the management of the hagiographic sources of the Early Middle Ages from the perspective of Historical Anthropology.
