We introduce the Data Analysis Pipeline (DAP) for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey V (SDSS-V) Local Volume Mapper (LVM) project, referred to as the LVM-DAP. We outline our methods for recovering both stellar and emission line components from the optical integral field spectroscopy, highlighting the developments and changes implemented to address specific challenges of the data set. The observations from the LVM project are unique because they cover a wide range of physical resolutions, from approximately 0.05 pc to 100 pc, depending on the distance to the targets. This, along with the varying number of stars sampled in each aperture (ranging from zero, just one of a few, to thousands), presents challenges in using previous spectral synthesis methods and interpreting the spectral fits. We provide a detailed explanation of how we model the stellar content and separate it from the ionized gas emission lines. To assess the accuracy of our results, we compare them with both idealized and more realistic simulations, highlighting the limitations of our methods. We find that the DAP robustly correct for stellar continuum features and recover emission line parameters (e.g. flux, equivalent width, systemtic velocity and velocity dispersion) with a precision and accuracy that fulfill the requirements of the primary goal of the analysis. In addition, the recovered stellar parameters are reliable for single stars, the recovery of integrated populations is less precise. Given two real numbers $q_0,q_1$ with $q_0, q_1 > 1$ satisfying $q_0+q_1 \ge q_0q_1$, we call a sequence $(d_i)$ with $d_i\in \{0,1\}$ a $(q_0,q_1)$-expansion or a double-base expansion of a real number $x$ if \[ x=\mathop{\sum}\limits_{i=1}^{\infty} \frac{d_{i}}{q_{d_1}q_{d_2}\cdots q_{d_i}}. \] When $q_0=q_1=q$, the set of univoque bases is given by the set of $q$'s such that $x = 1$ has exactly one $(q, q)$-expansion. The topological, dimensional and symbolic properties of such sets and their corresponding sequences have been intensively investigated. In our research, we study the topological and dimensional properties of the set of univoque bases for double-base expansions. This problem is more complicated, requiring new research strategies. Several new properties are uncovered. In particular, we show that the set of univoque bases in the double base setting is a meagre set with full Hausdorff dimension.

Centraliser algebras of monomial representations of finite groups may be constructed and studied using methods similar to those employed in the study of permutation groups. Guided by results of D. G. Higman and others, we give an explicit construction for a basis of the centraliser algebra of a monomial representation. The character table of this algebra is then constructed via character sums over double cosets. We locate the theory of group-developed and cocyclic-developed Hadamard matrices within this framework. We apply Gr\"obner bases to produce a new classification of highly symmetric complex Hadamard matrices., Comment: 20 pages

This paper presents surface acoustic wave (SAW) acoustic delay lines (ADL) for studying propagation loss mechanisms in Lithium Niobate (LN). Devices were fabricated by depositing 50 nm aluminum patterns on 600 nm X-Cut LN on amorphous silicon on silicon carbide, where longitudinally dominant SAW was targeted. Upon fabrication, higher-order thickness-based cross-sectional Lam\'e modes and Rayleigh modes were studied for their Q factors using acoustic delay lines. Utilizing bi-directional electrodes, ADL with lateral lambda values ranging from 0.4 um to 0.6 um were measured. Higher order Lame modes were found to have consistently higher Q factors than their Rayleigh mode counterpart, on the order of 1000-3000, showing high-frequency SAW devices as still viable candidates for frequency scaling without a substantial increase in loss., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures, accepted by IEEE UFFC-JS

Resilience refers to the ability of systems to withstand, adapt to, and recover from disruptive events. While studies on resilience have attracted significant attention across various research domains, the precise definition of this concept within the field of cooperative artificial intelligence remains unclear. This paper addresses this gap by proposing a clear definition of `cooperative resilience' and outlining a methodology for its quantitative measurement. The methodology is validated in an environment with RL-based and LLM-augmented autonomous agents, subjected to environmental changes and the introduction of agents with unsustainable behaviors. These events are parameterized to create various scenarios for measuring cooperative resilience. The results highlight the crucial role of resilience metrics in analyzing how the collective system prepares for, resists, recovers from, sustains well-being, and transforms in the face of disruptions. These findings provide foundational insights into the definition, measurement, and preliminary analysis of cooperative resilience, offering significant implications for the broader field of AI. The paper investigates a generalization of the classical Sitnikov problem, concentrating on the movement of a satellite along the Z-axis as it interacts with $n$ primary bodies in periodic motion. It establishes the existence of an infinite number of even and anti-periodic solutions with increasing periods. Classical shadow (CS) has opened the door to predicting the characteristics of quantum systems using very few measurements. As quantum systems grow in size, new ways to characterize them are needed to show the quality of their qubits, gates, and how noise affects them. In this work, we explore the capabilities of CS for reconstructing density state operators of sections of quantum devices to make a diagnostic of their qubits quality. We introduce zero-entropy classical shadow (ZECS), a methodology that focuses on reconstructing a positive semidefinite and unit trace density state operator using the CS information. This procedure makes a reliable reconstruction of the density state operator removing partially the errors associated with a limited sampling and quantum device noise. It gives a threshold of the maximum coherent information that qubits on a quantum device have. We test ZECS on ibm_lagos and ibm_brisbane using up to 10,000 shots. We show that with only 6,000 shots, we can make a diagnostic of the properties of groups of 2, 3, and 4 qubits on the 127-qubits ibm_brisbane device. We show two applications of ZECS: as a routing technique and as a detector for non-local noisy correlations. In the routing technique, an optimal set of 20 ibm_brisbane qubits is selected based on the ZECS procedure and used for a quantum optimization application. This method improves the solution quality by 10% and extends the quantum algorithm's lifetime by 33% when compared to the qubits chosen by the best transpilation procedure in Qiskit. Additionally, with the detector of non-local correlations, we identify regions of ibm\_brisbane that are not directly connected but have a strong correlation that maintains in time, suggesting some non-local crosstalk that can come, for example, at the multiplexing readout stage., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

We present a method to convert weather data into probabilistic forecasts of Aedes aegypti abundance. The approach, which relies on the Aedes-AI suite of neural networks, produces weekly point predictions with corresponding uncertainty estimates. Once calibrated on past trap and weather data, the model is designed to use weather forecasts to estimate future trap catches. We demonstrate that when reliable input data are used, the resulting predictions have high skill. This technique may therefore be used to supplement vector surveillance efforts or identify periods of elevated risk for vector-borne disease outbreaks.

We discuss the cold dark matter plus massive neutrinos simulations of the MillenniumTNG (MTNG) project, which aim to improve understanding of how well ongoing and future large-scale galaxy surveys will measure neutrino masses. Our largest simulations, $3000\,{\rm Mpc}$ on a side, use $10240^3$ particles of mass $m_{p} = 6.66\times 10^{8}\,h^{-1}{\rm M}_\odot$ to represent cold dark matter, and $2560^3$ to represent a population of neutrinos with summed mass $M_\nu = 100\,{\rm meV}$. Smaller volume runs with $\sim 630\,{\rm Mpc}$ also include cases with $M_\nu = 0\,\textrm{and}\, 300\,{\rm meV}$. All simulations are carried out twice using the paired-and-fixed technique for cosmic variance reduction. We evolve the neutrino component using the particle-based $\delta f$ importance sampling method, which greatly reduces shot noise in the neutrino density field. In addition, we modify the GADGET-4 code to account both for the influence of relativistic and mildly relativistic components on the expansion rate and for non-Newtonian effects on the largest represented simulation scales. This allows us to quantify accurately the impact of neutrinos on basic statistical measures of nonlinear structure formation, such as the matter power spectrum and the halo mass function. We use semi-analytic models of galaxy formation to predict the galaxy population and its clustering properties as a function of summed neutrino mass, finding significant ($\sim 10\%$) impacts on the cosmic star formation rate history, the galaxy mass function, and the clustering strength. This offers the prospect of identifying combinations of summary statistics that are optimally sensitive to the neutrino mass., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures

This work reports an acoustic solidly mounted resonator (SMR) at 18.64 GHz, among the highest operating frequencies reported. The device is built in scandium aluminum nitride (ScAlN) on top of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) Bragg reflectors on silicon (Si) wafer. The stack is analyzed with X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). The resonator shows a coupling coefficient (k2) of 2.0%, high series quality factor (Qs) of 156, shunt quality factor (Qp) of 142, and maximum Bode quality factor (Qmax) of 210. The third-order harmonics at 59.64 GHz is also observed with k2 around 0.6% and Q around 40. Upon further development, the reported acoustic resonator platform can enable various front-end signal-processing functions, e.g., filters and oscillators, at future frequency range 3 (FR3) bands., Comment: 5 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables

The advent of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI has revolutionized natural language applications across various domains. However, high-stakes decision-making tasks in fields such as medical, legal and finance require a level of precision, comprehensiveness, and logical consistency that pure LLM or Retrieval-Augmented-Generation (RAG) approaches often fail to deliver. At Elemental Cognition (EC), we have developed a neuro-symbolic AI platform to tackle these problems. The platform integrates fine-tuned LLMs for knowledge extraction and alignment with a robust symbolic reasoning engine for logical inference, planning and interactive constraint solving. We describe Cora, a Collaborative Research Assistant built on this platform, that is designed to perform complex research and discovery tasks in high-stakes domains. This paper discusses the multi-step inference challenges inherent in such domains, critiques the limitations of existing LLM-based methods, and demonstrates how Cora's neuro-symbolic approach effectively addresses these issues. We provide an overview of the system architecture, key algorithms for knowledge extraction and formal reasoning, and present preliminary evaluation results that highlight Cora's superior performance compared to well-known LLM and RAG baselines.

ExaGRyPE describes a suite of solvers for numerical relativity, based upon ExaHyPE 2, the second generation of our Exascale Hyperbolic PDE Engine. The presented generation of ExaGRyPE solves the Einstein equations in the CCZ4 formulation under a 3+1 foliation and focuses on black hole spacetimes. It employs a block-structured Cartesian grid carrying a higher-order order Finite Difference scheme with adaptive mesh refinement, it facilitates massive parallelism combining message passing, domain decomposition and task parallelism, and it supports the injection of particles into the grid as data probes or tracers. We introduce the ExaGRyPE-specific building blocks within ExaHyPE 2, and discuss its software architecture and compute-n-feel: For this, we formalize the creation of any specific simulation with ExaGRyPE as a sequence of lowering operations, where abstract logical tasks are successively broken into finer tasks until we obtain an abstraction level that can be mapped onto a C++ executable. The overall program logic is fully specified via a domain-specific Python interface, we map this logic onto a more detailed set of numerical tasks, subsequently lower this representation onto technical tasks that the underlying ExaHyPE engine uses to parallelize the application, before eventually the technical tasks are mapped onto task graphs including the actual PDE term evaluations, initial conditions, boundary conditions, and so forth. We end up with a rigorous separation of concerns which shields ExaGRyPE users from technical details and hence simplifies the development of novel physical models. We present the simulations and data for the gauge wave, static single black holes and rotating binary black hole systems, demonstrating that the code base is mature and usable. However, we also uncover domain-specific numerical challenges that need further study by the community in future work.

The C++ programming language and its cousins lean towards a memory-inefficient storage of structs: The compiler inserts helper bits into the struct such that individual attributes align with bytes, and it adds additional bytes aligning attributes with cache lines, while it is not able to exploit knowledge about the range of integers, enums or bitsets to bring the memory footprint down. Furthermore, the language provides neither support for data exchange via MPI nor for arbitrary floating-point precision formats. If developers need to have a low memory footprint and MPI datatypes over structs which exchange only minimal data, they have to manipulate the data and to write MPI datatypes manually. We propose a C++ language extension based upon C++ attributes through which developers can guide the compiler what memory arrangements would be beneficial: Can multiple booleans be squeezed into one bit field, do floats hold fewer significant bits than in the IEEE standard, or does the code require a user-defined MPI datatype for certain subsets of attributes? The extension offers the opportunity to fall back to normal alignment and padding rules via plain C++ assignments, no dependencies upon external libraries are introduced, and the resulting code remains standard C++. Our work implements the language annotations within LLVM and demonstrates their potential impact, both upon the runtime and the memory footprint, through smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) benchmarks. They uncover the potential gains in terms of performance and development productivity.

This work reports the procedure for modeling piezoelectric acoustic resonators and filters at millimeter wave (mmWave). Different from conventional methods for lower frequency piezoelectric devices, we include both acoustic and electromagnetic (EM) effects, e.g., self-inductance, in both the circuit-level fitting and finite element analysis, toward higher accuracy at higher frequencies. To validate the method, thin-film lithium niobate (LiNbO3) first-order antisymmetric (A1) mode devices are used as the testbed, achieving great agreement for both the standalone resonators and a fifth-order ladder filter. The Orion Molecular Cloud complex, one of the nearest (D = 406 pc) and most extensively studied massive star-forming regions, is ideal for constraining the physics of stellar feedback, but its ~12 deg diameter on the sky requires a dedicated approach to mapping ionized gas structures within and around the nebula. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-V) Local Volume Mapper (LVM) is a new optical integral field unit (IFU) that will map the ionized gas within the Milky Way and Local Group galaxies, covering 4300 deg^2 of the sky with the new LVM Instrument. We showcase optical emission line maps from LVM covering 12 deg^2 inside of the Orion belt region, with 195,000 individual spectra combined to produce images at 0.07 pc (35.3") resolution. This is the largest IFU map made (to date) of the Milky Way, and contains well-known nebulae (the Horsehead Nebula, Flame Nebula, IC 434, and IC 432), as well as ionized interfaces with the neighboring dense Orion B molecular cloud. We resolve the ionization structure of each nebula, and map the increase in both the [SII]/Ha and [NII]/Ha line ratios at the outskirts of nebulae and along the ionization front with Orion B. [OIII] line emission is only spatially resolved within the center of the Flame Nebula and IC 434, and our ~0.1 pc scale line ratio diagrams show how variations in these diagnostics are lost as we move from the resolved to the integrated view of each nebula. We detect ionized gas emission associated with the dusty bow wave driven ahead of the star sigma Orionis, where the stellar wind interacts with the ambient interstellar medium. The Horsehead Nebula is seen as a dark occlusion of the bright surrounding photo-disassociation region. The quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) is a promising algorithm for solving combinatorial optimization problems (COPs). In this algorithm, there are alternating layers consisting of a mixer and a problem Hamiltonian. Each layer $i=0,\ldots,p-1$ is parameterized by $\beta_i$ and $\gamma_i$. How to find these parameters has been an open question with the majority of the research focused on finding them using classical algorithms. In this work, we present evidence that fixed linear ramp schedules constitute a universal set of QAOA parameters, i.e., a set of $\gamma$ and $\beta$ parameters that rapidly approximate the optimal solution, $x^*$, independently of the COP selected, and that the success probability of finding it, $probability(x^*)$, increases with the number of QAOA layers $p$. We simulate linear ramp QAOA protocols (LR-QAOA) involving up to $N_q=42$ qubits and $p = 400$ layers on random instances of 9 different COPs. The results suggest that $probability(x^*) \approx 1/2^{(\eta N_q / p)}$ for a constant $\eta$. For example, when implementing LR-QAOA with $p=42$, the $probability(x^*)$ for 42-qubit Weighted MaxCut problems (W-MaxCut) increases from $2/2^{42}\approx 10^{-13}$ to an average of 0.13. We compare LR-QAOA, simulated annealing (SA), and branch-and-bound (B\&B) finding a scaling improvement in LR-QAOA. We test LR-QAOA on real hardware using IonQ Aria, Quantinuum H2-1, IBM Brisbane, IBM Kyoto, and IBM Osaka, encoding random weighted MaxCut (W-MaxCut) problems from 5 to 109 qubits and $p=3$ to $100$. Even for the largest case, $N_q=109$ qubits and $p=100$, information about the LR-QAOA optimization protocol is present. The circuit involved requires 21200 CNOT gates. These results show that LR-QAOA effectively finds high-quality solutions for a large variety of COPs and suggest a scaling advantage of quantum computation for combinatorial optimization.

As 5G connectivity proliferates, signal processing applications at 6G centimeter bands have gained attention for urban wireless capacity expansion. At sub-5 GHz, acoustic resonators operating in the fundamental symmetric (S0) Lamb mode hold significant promise if frequency scaled to the 6G centimeter bands. Concurrently, the lateral wavelength dependency and the traveling wave nature of S0 mode enable monolithic multi-frequency fabrication, transversal filters, correlators, and other compact signal processing components. In this work, we present thin-film lithium niobate (LN) S0 resonators scaled up to 16 GHz. Specifically, we study the characteristics of the S0 mode as the wavelength is minimized and showcase a device at 14.9 GHz with a Bode Q maximum of 391, a k2 of 6%, and a figure of merit (FoM) of 23.33, surpassing the state-of-the-art (SoA) in its frequency range., Comment: 4 pages, 8 figures, to be presetned in Hilton Head 2024,the 19th in the series of Hilton Head Workshops on the science and technology of solid-state sensors, actuators, and microsystems

Binary Neural Networks emerged as a cost-effective and energy-efficient solution for computer vision tasks by binarizing either network weights or activations. However, common binary activations, such as the Sign activation function, abruptly binarize the values with a single threshold, losing fine-grained details in the feature outputs. This work proposes an activation that applies multiple thresholds following dithering principles, shifting the Sign activation function for each pixel according to a spatially periodic threshold kernel. Unlike literature methods, the shifting is defined jointly for a set of adjacent pixels, taking advantage of spatial correlations. Experiments over the classification task demonstrate the effectiveness of the designed dithering Sign activation function as an alternative activation for binary neural networks, without increasing the computational cost. We present the Sloan Digital Sky Survey V (SDSS-V) Local Volume Mapper (LVM). The LVM is an integral-field spectroscopic survey of the Milky Way, Magellanic Clouds, and of a sample of local volume galaxies, connecting resolved pc-scale individual sources of feedback to kpc-scale ionized interstellar medium (ISM) properties. The 4-year survey covers the southern Milky Way disk at spatial resolutions of 0.05 to 1 pc, the Magellanic Clouds at 10 pc resolution, and nearby large galaxies at larger scales totaling $>4300$ square degrees of sky, and more than 55M spectra. It utilizes a new facility of alt-alt mounted siderostats feeding 16 cm refractive telescopes, lenslet-coupled fiber-optics, and spectrographs covering 3600-9800A at R ~ 4000. The ultra-wide field IFU has a diameter of 0.5 degrees with 1801 hexagonally packed fibers of 35.3 arcsec apertures. The siderostats allow for a completely stationary fiber system, avoiding instability of the line spread function seen in traditional fiber feeds. Scientifically, LVM resolves the regions where energy, momentum, and chemical elements are injected into the ISM at the scale of gas clouds, while simultaneously charting where energy is being dissipated (via cooling, shocks, turbulence, bulk flows, etc.) to global scales. This combined local and global view enables us to constrain physical processes regulating how stellar feedback operates and couples to galactic kinematics and disk-scale structures, such as the bar and spiral arms, as well as gas in- and out-flows., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

In this paper, the construction of $C^{1}$ cubic quasi-interpolants on a three-direction mesh of $\RR^{2}$ is addressed. The quasi-interpolating splines are defined by directly setting their Bernstein-B\'{e}zier coefficients relative to each triangle from point and gradient values in order to reproduce the polynomials of the highest possible degree. Moreover, additional global properties are required. Finally, we provide some numerical tests confirming the approximation properties.

We prove a version of the Thom Isotopy Theorem for nonproper semialgebraic maps $f\colon X\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^m$, where $X \subset\mathbb{R}^n$ is a semialgebraic set and $f$ is the restriction to $X$ of a smooth semialgebraic map $F:\mathbb{R}^n\to \mathbb{R}^m$.

Transformation optics applied to low frequency magnetic systems has been recently implemented to design magnetic field concentrators and cloaks with superior performance. Although this achievement has been amply demonstrated theoretically and experimentally in bulk 3D macrostructures, the performance of these devices at low dimensions remains an open question. In this work, we numerically investigate the non-monotonic evolution of the gain of a magnetic metamaterial field concentrator as the axial dimension is progressively shrunk. In particular, we show that in planar structures the role played by the diamagnetic components becomes negligible, whereas the paramagnetic elements increase their magnetic field channeling efficiency. This is further demonstrated experimentally by tracking the gain of superconductor-ferromagnet concentrators through the superconducting transition. Interestingly, for thicknesses where the diamagnetic petals play an important role for the concentration gain, they also help to reduce the stray field of the concentrator, thus limiting the perturbation of the external field (invisibility). Our findings establish a roadmap and set clear geometrical limits for designing low dimensional magnetic field concentrators.

Gravitational waves from black-hole merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models - and also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70 \pm 0.82 M\odot BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. Alternatively, and more plausibly, it could belong to the ED-2 stream, which likely originated from a globular cluster that had been disrupted by the Milky Way., Comment: 23 pages, accepted fro publication in A&A Letters. In this manuscript, we study the stability of the origin for the multivariate geometric Brownian motion. More precisely, under suitable sufficient conditions, we construct a Lyapunov function such that the origin of the multivariate geometric Brownian motion is globally asymptotically stable in probability. Moreover, we show that such conditions can be rewritten as a Bilinear Matrix Inequality (BMI) feasibility problem. We stress that no commutativity relations between the drift matrix and the noise dispersion matrices are assumed and therefore the so-called Magnus representation of the solution of the multivariate geometric Brownian motion is complicated. In addition, we exemplify our method in numerous specific models from the literature such as random linear oscillators, satellite dynamics, inertia systems, diagonal noise systems, cancer self-remission and smoking., Comment: 34 pages

Rapid progress in information technologies has spurred the need for innovative memory concepts, for which advanced data-processing methods and tailor-made materials are required. Here we introduce a previously unexplored nanoscale magnetic object: an analog magnetic vortex controlled by electric-field-induced ion motion, termed magneto-ionic vortex or "vortion". This state arises from paramagnetic FeCoN through voltage gating and gradual N3-ion extraction within patterned nanodots. Unlike traditional vortex states, vortions offer comprehensive analog adjustment of key properties such as magnetization amplitude, nucleation/annihilation fields, or coercivity using voltage as an energy-efficient tuning knob. This manipulation occurs post-synthesis, obviating the need for energy-demanding methods like laser pulses or spin-torque currents. By leveraging an overlooked aspect of N3-magneto-ionics -- planar ion migration within nanodots -- precise control of the magnetic layer's thickness is achieved, which enables reversible transitions among paramagnetic, single-domain, and vortion states, offering future prospects for analog computing, multi-state data storage, or brain-inspired devices.

This work reports the first study of periodically poled piezoelectric film (P3F) lithium niobate (LiNbO3) resonators at cryogenic temperatures. We experimentally investigate the temperature dependency of resonant frequencies and quality factor (Q) of higher-order Lamb modes up to 20 GHz between 80{\deg}K and 297{\deg}K, using a tri-layer P3F LiNbO3 resonators as the experimental platform. The supported thickness-shear Lamb modes between second-order symmetric (S2) and eleventh-order antisymmetric (A11) modes show temperature coefficients of frequency (TCF) averaging -68.8 ppm/K. Higher Q and more pronounced spurious modes are observed at lower temperatures for many modes. The classical dynamics of the isotropic two-dimensional harmonic oscillator confined by an elliptic hard wall is discussed. The interplay between the harmonic potential with circular symmetry and the boundary with elliptical symmetry does not spoil the separability in elliptic coordinates; however, it generates non-trivial energy and momentum dependencies in the billiard. We analyze the equi-momentum surfaces in the parameters space and classify the kinds of motion the particle can have in the billiard. The winding numbers and periods of the rotational and librational trajectories are analytically calculated and numerically verified. A remarkable finding is the possibility of having degenerate rotational trajectories with the same energy but different second constant of motion and different caustics and periods. The conditions to get these degenerate trajectories are analyzed. This paper reports the first piezoelectric acoustic filter in periodically poled piezoelectric film (P3F) lithium niobate (LiNbO3) at 23.8 GHz with low insertion loss (IL) of 1.52 dB and 3-dB fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 19.4%. The filter features a compact footprint of 0.64 mm2. The third-order ladder filter is implemented with electrically coupled resonators in 150 nm bi-layer P3F 128 rotated Y-cut LiNbO3 thin film, operating in second-order symmetric (S2) Lamb mode. The record-breaking performance is enabled by the P3F LiNbO3 platform, where piezoelectric thin films of alternating orientations are transferred subsequently, facilitating efficient higher-order Lamb mode operation with simultaneously high quality factor (Q) and coupling coefficient (k2) at millimeter-wave (mmWave). Also, the multi-layer P3F stack promises smaller footprints and better nonlinearity than single-layer counterparts, thanks to the higher capacitance density and lower thermal resistance. Solving combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) is a promising application of quantum computation, with the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) being one of the most studied quantum algorithms for solving them. However, multiple factors make the parameter search of the QAOA a hard optimization problem. In this work, we study transfer learning (TL), a methodology to reuse pre-trained QAOA parameters of one problem instance into different COP instances. To this end, we select small cases of the traveling salesman problem (TSP), the bin packing problem (BPP), the knapsack problem (KP), the weighted maximum cut (MaxCut) problem, the maximal independent set (MIS) problem, and portfolio optimization (PO), and find optimal $\beta$ and $\gamma$ parameters for $p$ layers. We compare how well the parameters found for one problem adapt to the others. Among the different problems, BPP is the one that produces the best transferable parameters, maintaining the probability of finding the optimal solution above a quadratic speedup for problem sizes up to 42 qubits and p = 10 layers. Using the BPP parameters, we perform experiments on IonQ Harmony and Aria, Rigetti Aspen-M-3, and IBM Brisbane of MIS instances for up to 18 qubits. The results indicate IonQ Aria yields the best overlap with the ideal probability distribution. Additionally, we show that cross-platform TL is possible using the D-Wave Advantage quantum annealer with the parameters found for BPP. We show an improvement in performance compared to the default protocols for MIS with up to 170 qubits. Integrating deep learning with the search for new electron-phonon superconductors represents a burgeoning field of research, where the primary challenge lies in the computational intensity of calculating the electron-phonon spectral function, $\alpha^2F(\omega)$, the essential ingredient of Midgal-Eliashberg theory of superconductivity. To overcome this challenge, we adopt a two-step approach. First, we compute $\alpha^2F(\omega)$ for 818 dynamically stable materials. We then train a deep-learning model to predict $\alpha^2F(\omega)$, using an unconventional training strategy to temper the model's overfitting, enhancing predictions. Specifically, we train a Bootstrapped Ensemble of Tempered Equivariant graph neural NETworks (BETE-NET), obtaining an MAE of 0.21, 45 K, and 43 K for the Eliashberg moments derived from $\alpha^2F(\omega)$: $\lambda$, $\omega_{\log}$, and $\omega_{2}$, respectively, yielding an MAE of 2.5 K for the critical temperature, $T_c$. Further, we incorporate domain knowledge of the site-projected phonon density of states to impose inductive bias into the model's node attributes and enhance predictions. This methodological innovation decreases the MAE to 0.18, 29 K, and 28 K, respectively, yielding an MAE of 2.1 K for $T_c$. We illustrate the practical application of our model in high-throughput screening for high-$T_c$ materials. The model demonstrates an average precision nearly five times higher than random screening, highlighting the potential of ML in accelerating superconductor discovery. BETE-NET accelerates the search for high-$T_c$ superconductors while setting a precedent for applying ML in materials discovery, particularly when data is limited., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

We present a catalog of $\sim$52,000 extragalactic HII regions and their spectroscopic properties obtained using Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) from MUSE observations. The sample analyzed in this study contains 678 galaxies within the nearby Universe (0.004 < z < 0.06) covering different morphological types and a wide range of stellar masses (6 < log(M$_{*}$/M$_{\odot}$) < 13). Each galaxy was analyzed using the Pipe3D and pyHIIextractor codes to obtain information of the ionized gas and underlying stellar populations. Specifically, the fluxes, equivalent widths, velocities and velocity dispersions of 30 emission lines covering the wavelength range between $\lambda$4750A to $\lambda$9300A, were extracted and were used to estimate luminosity weighted ages and metallicities of the underlying stellar populations from each HII region (of the original sample we detect HII regions in 539 galaxies). In addition, we introduce and apply a novel method and independent of any intrinsic physical property to estimate and decontaminate the contribution of the diffuse ionized gas. Using the final catalog, we explore the dependence of properties of the HII regions on different local and global galaxy parameters: (i) Hubble type, (ii) stellar mass, (iii) galactocentric distance, and (iv) the age and metallicity of the underlying/neighbour stellar populations. We confirm known relations between properties of the HII regions and the underlying stellar populations (in particular with the age) uncovered using data of lower spatial and spectral resolution. The EDGE-CALIFA survey provides spatially resolved optical integral field unit (IFU) and CO spectroscopy for 125 galaxies selected from the CALIFA Data Release 3 sample. The Extragalactic Database for Galaxy Evolution (EDGE) presents the spatially resolved products of the survey as pixel tables that reduce the oversampling in the original images and facilitate comparison of pixels from different images. By joining these pixel tables to lower dimensional tables that provide radial profiles, integrated spectra, or global properties, it is possible to investigate the dependence of local conditions on large-scale properties. The database is freely accessible and has been utilized in several publications. We illustrate the use of this database and highlight the effects of CO upper limits on the inferred slopes of the local scaling relations between stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), and H$_2$ surface densities. We first assemble a full set of the Boltzmann Equation in Diffusion Approximation (BEDA) for studying thermalization/hydrodynamization and quark production in out of equilibrium systems. We then discuss thermalization and the production of three flavors of massless quarks in spatially homogeneous systems initially filled only with gluons. A complete parametric understanding for thermalization and quark production is obtained for both initially very dense or dilute systems, which are complemented by detailed numerical simulations. We analyze 330 ks of {\it Chandra} X-ray imaging and spectra of the nearby, edge-on starburst and Seyfert Type 2 galaxy NGC 4945 to measure the hot gas properties along the galactic outflows. We extract and model spectra from 15 regions extending from $-$0.55 kpc to $+$0.85 kpc above and below the galactic disk to determine the best-fit parameters and metal abundances. We find that the hot gas temperatures and number densities peak in the central regions and decrease along the outflows. These profiles are inconsistent with a spherical, adiabatically-expanding wind model, suggesting the need to include mass loading and/or a non-spherical outflow geometry. We estimate the mass outflow rate of the hot wind to be $1.6\:M_{\odot}~\rm{yr}^{-1}$. We present the extended ALMA MaNGA QUEnching and STar formation survey, a combination of the original 46 ALMaQUEST galaxies plus new ALMA observations for a further 20 interacting galaxies. Three well-studied scaling relations are fit to the 19,999 star-forming spaxels in the extended sample, namely the resolved Schmidt-Kennicutt (rSK) relation, the resolved star forming main sequence (rSFMS) and the resolved molecular gas main sequence (rMGMS). We additionally investigate the relationship between the dynamical equilibrium pressure (PDE) and star formation rate surface density (Sigma_SFR), which we refer to as the resolved PDE (rPDE) relation. Contrary to previous studies that have focussed on normal star-forming galaxies and found an approximately linear rPDE relation, the presence of more vigourously star-forming galaxies in the extended ALMaQUEST sample reveals a marked turnover in the relation at high pressures. Although the scatter around the linear fit to the rPDE relation is similar to the other three relations, a random forest analysis, which can extract non-linear dependences, finds that PDE is unambiguously more important than either Sigma_H2 or Sigma_star for predicting Sigma_SFR. We compare the observed rPDE relation to the prediction of the pressure-regulated feedback-modulated (PRFM) model of star formation, finding that galaxies residing on the global SFMS do indeed closely follow the rPDE relation predicted by the PRFM theory. However, galaxies above and below the global SFMS show significant deviations from the model. In this work, we analyze a power-law inflationary potential enhanced with a step that can introduce features in the primordial power spectrum. We focus on the computation of the Spectral Distortions (SD) induced by these features obtained from the inflationary dynamics. In this scenario, we explore the potential of upcoming experimental missions like PIXIE to detect the SD of the model within a power of $n = 2/3$, a power that agrees with recent tensor-to-scalar ratio constraints. The model offers insights into models with cosmological phases and different scalar field dynamics. Introducing a step in the inflaton potential leads to distinct features in the primordial power spectrum, such as oscillations and localized enhancements/suppressions at specific scales. We analyze the impact of three primary parameters$-\beta$, $\delta$, and $\phi_{\text{step}}-$on the amplitude and characteristics of the SD. The $\phi_{\rm step}$ places the onset of the oscillations in the primordial power spectrum. The $\beta$ parameter significantly influences the magnitude of the $\mu$-SD, with its increase leading to larger SD and vice versa. Similarly, the $\delta$ parameter affects the smoothness of the step in the potential, with larger values resulting in smaller SD. Our findings indicate a distinct parameter space defined by $0.02 <\delta/{\rm M_{pl}} \lesssim 0.026$, $0.10 \lesssim \beta < 0.23$, and $ 7.53 \lesssim \phi_{\rm step}/{\rm M_{pl}} \lesssim 7.55$, which produces SD potentially detectable by PIXIE. This region also corresponds to the maximum observed values of $\mu$ and $y$ SD, which in special cases are an order of magnitude larger than the expected for $\Lambda$CDM. However, we also identify parameter ranges where $\mu$ and $y$ SD may not be detectable due to the limitations of current observational technology., Comment: 23 pages, 32 figures

This work describes sputtered scandium aluminum nitride (ScAlN) thin-film bulk acoustic resonators (FBAR) at millimeter wave (mmWave) with high quality factor (Q) using platinum (Pt) electrodes. FBARs with combinations of Pt and aluminum (Al) electrodes, i.e., Al top Al bottom, Pt top Al bottom, Al top Pt bottom, and Pt top Pt bottom, are built to study the impact of electrodes on mmWave FBARs. The demonstrated FBAR with Pt top and bottom electrodes achieve electromechanical coupling (k2) of 4.0% and Q of 116 for the first-order symmetric (S1) mode at 13.7 GHz, and k2 of 1.8% and Q of 94 for third-order symmetric (S3) mode at 61.6 GHz. Through these results, we confirmed that even in the frequency band of approximately 60 GHz, ScAlN FBAR can achieve a Q factor approaching 100 with optimized fabrication and acoustic/EM design. This paper reports the first high-performance acoustic filters toward millimeter wave (mmWave) bands using transferred single-crystal thin film lithium niobate (LiNbO3). By transferring LiNbO3 on the top of silicon (Si) and sapphire (Al2O3) substrates with an intermediate amorphous Si (aSi) bonding and sacrificial layer, we demonstrate compact acoustic filters with record-breaking performance beyond 20 GHz. In the LN-aSi-Al2O3 platform, the third-order ladder filter exhibits low insertion loss (IL) of 1.62 dB and 3-dB fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 19.8% at 22.1 GHz, while in the LN-aSi-Si platform, the filter shows low IL of 2.38 dB and FBW of 18.2% at 23.5 GHz. Material analysis validates the great crystalline quality of the stacks. The high-resolution x-ray diffraction (HRXRD) shows full width half maximum (FWHM) of 53 arcsec for Al2O3 and 206 arcsec for Si, both remarkably low compared to piezoelectric thin films of similar thickness. The usual approach to classify the ionizing source using optical spectroscopy is based on the use of diagnostic diagrams that compares the relative strength of pairs of collisitional metallic lines (e.g., [O iii] and [N ii]) with respect to recombination hydrogen lines (e.g., H{\beta} and H{\alpha}). Despite of being accepted as the standard procedure, it present known problems, including confusion regimes and/or limitations related to the required signal-to-noise of the involved emission lines. These problems affect not only our intrinsic understanding of inter-stellar medium and its poroperties, but also fundamental galaxy properties, such as the star-formation rate and the oxygen abundance, and key questions just as the fraction of active galactic nuclei, among several others. We explore the existing alternatives in the literature to minimize the confusion among different ionizing sources and proposed a new simple diagram that uses the equivalent width and the velocity dispersion from one single emission line, H{\alpha}, to classify the ionizing sources. We use aperture limited and spatial resolved spectroscopic data in the nearby Universe (z{\sim}0.01) to demonstrate that the new diagram, that we called WHaD, segregates the different ionizing sources in a more efficient way that previously adopted procedures. A new set of regions are defined in this diagram to select betweeen different ionizing sources. The new proposed diagram is well placed to determine the ionizing source when only H{\alpha} is available, or when the signal-to-noise of the emission lines involved in the classical diagnostic diagrams (e.g., H{\beta})., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publishing in A&A

We first assemble a full set of the Boltzmann Equation in Diffusion Approximation (BEDA) for studying thermalization/hydrodynamization as well as the production of massless quarks and antiquarks in out of equilibrium systems. In the BEDA, the time evolution of a generic system is characterized by the following space-time dependent quantities: the jet quenching parameter, the effective temperature, and two more for each quark flavor that describe the conversion between gluons and quarks/antiquarks via the $2\leftrightarrow2$ processes. Out of the latter two quantities, an effective net quark chemical potential is defined, which equals the net quark chemical potential after thermal equilibration. We then study thermalization and the production of three flavors of massless quarks and antiquarks in spatially homogeneous systems initially filled only with gluons. A parametric understanding of thermalization and quark production is obtained for either initially very dense or dilute systems, which are complemented by detailed numerical simulations for intermediate values of initial gluon occupancy $f_0$. For a wide range of $f_0$, the final equilibration time is determined to be about one order of magnitude longer than that in the corresponding pure gluon systems. Moreover, during the final stage of the thermalization process for $f_0\geq 10^{-4}$, gluons are found to thermalize earlier than quarks and antiquarks, undergoing the top-down thermalization., Comment: 49 pages, 17 figures

In this work, a 38.7 GHz acoustic wave ladder filter exhibiting insertion loss (IL) of 5.63 dB and 3-dB fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 17.6% is demonstrated, pushing the frequency limits of thin-film piezoelectric acoustic filter technology. The filter achieves operating frequency up to 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency range 2 (FR2) bands, by thinning thin-film LiNbO3 resonators to sub-50 nm thickness. The high electromechanical coupling (k2) and quality factor (Q) of first-order antisymmetric (A1) mode resonators in 128 Y-cut lithium niobate (LiNbO3) collectively enable the first acoustic filters at mmWave. The key design consideration of electromagnetic (EM) resonances in interdigitated transducers (IDT) is addressed and mitigated. These results indicate that thin-film piezoelectric resonators could be pushed to 5G FR2 bands. Quantum geometry of electronic wavefunctions results in fascinating topological phenomena. A prominent example is the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in which a Hall voltage arises in the absence of an applied magnetic field. The AHE requires a coexistence of Berry curvature and spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. These conditions can be realized in two-dimensional moir\'e systems with broken $xy$-inversion symmetry ($C_{2z}$) that host flat electronic bands. Here, we explore helical trilayer graphene (HTG), three graphene layers twisted sequentially by the same angle forming two misoriented moir\'e patterns. Although HTG is globally $C_{2z}$-symmetric, surprisingly we observe clear signatures of topological bands. At a magic angle $\theta_\mathrm{m}\approx 1.8^\circ$, we uncover a robust phase diagram of correlated and magnetic states using magnetotransport measurements. Lattice relaxation leads to large periodic domains in which $C_{2z}$ is broken on the moir\'e scale. Each domain harbors flat topological bands with valley-contrasting Chern numbers $\pm(1,-2)$. We find correlated states at integer electron fillings per moir\'e unit cell $\nu=1,2,3$ and fractional fillings $2/3,7/2$ with the AHE arising at $\nu=1,3$ and $2/3,7/2$. At $\nu=1$, a time-reversal symmetric phase appears beyond a critical electric displacement field, indicating a topological phase transition. Finally, hysteresis upon sweeping $\nu$ points to first-order phase transitions across a spatial mosaic of Chern domains separated by a network of topological gapless edge states. We establish HTG as an important platform that realizes ideal conditions for exploring strongly interacting topological phases and, due to its emergent moir\'e-scale symmetries, demonstrates a novel way to engineer topology.

The machine learning of lattice operators has three possible bottlenecks. From a statistical standpoint, it is necessary to design a constrained class of operators based on prior information with low bias, and low complexity relative to the sample size. From a computational perspective, there should be an efficient algorithm to minimize an empirical error over the class. From an understanding point of view, the properties of the learned operator need to be derived, so its behavior can be theoretically understood. The statistical bottleneck can be overcome due to the rich literature about the representation of lattice operators, but there is no general learning algorithm for them. In this paper, we discuss a learning paradigm in which, by overparametrizing a class via elements in a lattice, an algorithm for minimizing functions in a lattice is applied to learn. We present the stochastic lattice descent algorithm as a general algorithm to learn on constrained classes of operators as long as a lattice overparametrization of it is fixed, and we discuss previous works which are proves of concept. Moreover, if there are algorithms to compute the basis of an operator from its overparametrization, then its properties can be deduced and the understanding bottleneck is also overcome. This learning paradigm has three properties that modern methods based on neural networks lack: control, transparency and interpretability. Nowadays, there is an increasing demand for methods with these characteristics, and we believe that mathematical morphology is in a unique position to supply them. The lattice overparametrization paradigm could be a missing piece for it to achieve its full potential within modern machine learning.

Gaia's readout window strategy is challenged by very dense fields in the sky. Therefore, in addition to standard Gaia observations, full Sky Mapper (SM) images were recorded for nine selected regions in the sky. A new software pipeline exploits these Service Interface Function (SIF) images of crowded fields (CFs), making use of the availability of the full two-dimensional (2D) information. This new pipeline produced half a million additional Gaia sources in the region of the omega Centauri ($\omega$ Cen) cluster, which are published with this Focused Product Release. We discuss the dedicated SIF CF data reduction pipeline, validate its data products, and introduce their Gaia archive table. Our aim is to improve the completeness of the {\it Gaia} source inventory in a very dense region in the sky, $\omega$ Cen. An adapted version of {\it Gaia}'s Source Detection and Image Parameter Determination software located sources in the 2D SIF CF images. We validated the results by comparing them to the public {\it Gaia} DR3 catalogue and external Hubble Space Telescope data. With this Focused Product Release, 526\,587 new sources have been added to the {\it Gaia} catalogue in $\omega$ Cen. Apart from positions and brightnesses, the additional catalogue contains parallaxes and proper motions, but no meaningful colour information. While SIF CF source parameters generally have a lower precision than nominal {\it Gaia} sources, in the cluster centre they increase the depth of the combined catalogue by three magnitudes and improve the source density by a factor of ten. This first SIF CF data publication already adds great value to the {\it Gaia} catalogue. It demonstrates what to expect for the fourth {\it Gaia} catalogue, which will contain additional sources for all nine SIF CF regions.

Context. Strongly lensed quasars are fundamental sources for cosmology. The Gaia space mission covers the entire sky with the unprecedented resolution of $0.18$" in the optical, making it an ideal instrument to search for gravitational lenses down to the limiting magnitude of 21. Nevertheless, the previous Gaia Data Releases are known to be incomplete for small angular separations such as those expected for most lenses. Aims. We present the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium GravLens pipeline, which was built to analyse all Gaia detections around quasars and to cluster them into sources, thus producing a catalogue of secondary sources around each quasar. We analysed the resulting catalogue to produce scores that indicate source configurations that are compatible with strongly lensed quasars. Methods. GravLens uses the DBSCAN unsupervised clustering algorithm to detect sources around quasars. The resulting catalogue of multiplets is then analysed with several methods to identify potential gravitational lenses. We developed and applied an outlier scoring method, a comparison between the average BP and RP spectra of the components, and we also used an extremely randomised tree algorithm. These methods produce scores to identify the most probable configurations and to establish a list of lens candidates. Results. We analysed the environment of 3 760 032 quasars. A total of 4 760 920 sources, including the quasars, were found within 6" of the quasar positions. This list is given in the Gaia archive. In 87\% of cases, the quasar remains a single source, and in 501 385 cases neighbouring sources were detected. We propose a list of 381 lensed candidates, of which we identified 49 as the most promising. Beyond these candidates, the associate tables in this Focused Product Release allow the entire community to explore the unique Gaia data for strong lensing studies further., Comment: 35 pages, 60 figures, accepted for publication by Astronomy and Astrophysics

The third Gaia Data Release (DR3) provided photometric time series of more than 2 million long-period variable (LPV) candidates. Anticipating the publication of full radial-velocity (RV) in DR4, this Focused Product Release (FPR) provides RV time series for a selection of LPVs with high-quality observations. We describe the production and content of the Gaia catalog of LPV RV time series, and the methods used to compute variability parameters published in the Gaia FPR. Starting from the DR3 LPVs catalog, we applied filters to construct a sample of sources with high-quality RV measurements. We modeled their RV and photometric time series to derive their periods and amplitudes, and further refined the sample by requiring compatibility between the RV period and at least one of the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, or $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric periods. The catalog includes RV time series and variability parameters for 9\,614 sources in the magnitude range $6\lesssim G/{\rm mag}\lesssim 14$, including a flagged top-quality subsample of 6\,093 stars whose RV periods are fully compatible with the values derived from the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, and $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric time series. The RV time series contain a mean of 24 measurements per source taken unevenly over a duration of about three years. We identify the great most sources (88%) as genuine LPVs, with about half of them showing a pulsation period and the other half displaying a long secondary period. The remaining 12% consists of candidate ellipsoidal binaries. Quality checks against RVs available in the literature show excellent agreement. We provide illustrative examples and cautionary remarks. The publication of RV time series for almost 10\,000 LPVs constitutes, by far, the largest such database available to date in the literature.
