We argue that interpretations of machine learning (ML) models or the model-building process can bee seen as a form of sensitivity analysis (SA), a general methodology used to explain complex systems in many fields such as environmental modeling, engineering, or economics. We address both researchers and practitioners, calling attention to the benefits of a unified SA-based view of explanations in ML and the necessity to fully credit related work. We bridge the gap between both fields by formally describing how (a) the ML process is a system suitable for SA, (b) how existing ML interpretation methods relate to this perspective, and (c) how other SA techniques could be applied to ML.

The double-scaled infinite temperature limit of the SYK model has been conjectured by Rahman and Susskind (RS) [1, 2, 3, 4], and independently by Verlinde [5] to be dual to a certain low dimensional de Sitter space. In a recent discussion of this conjecture Narovlansky and Verlinde (NV) [6] came to conclusions which radically differ from those of RS. In particular these conclusions disagree by factors which diverge as $N \to \infty$. Among these is a mismatch between the scaling of boundary entropy and bulk horizon area. In this note, we point out differences in two key assumptions made by RS and NV which lead to these mismatches, and explain why we think the RS assumptions are correct. When the NV assumptions, which we believe are unwarranted, are replaced by those of RS, the conclusions match both RS and the standard relation between entropy and area. In the process of discussing these, we will shed some light on: the various notions of temperature that appear in the duality; the relationship between Hamiltonian energy and bulk mass; and the location of bulk conical defect states in the spectrum of DSSYK$_{\infty}$., Comment: 48 + 24 pages, 3 figures

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in research across all disciplines is becoming ubiquitous. However, this ubiquity is largely driven by hyperspecific AI models developed during scientific studies for accomplishing a well-defined, data-dense task. These AI models introduce apparent, human-recognizable biases because they are trained with finite, specific data sets and parameters. However, the efficacy of using large language models (LLMs) -- and LLM-powered generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT -- to assist the research process is currently indeterminate. These generative AI tools, trained on general and imperceptibly large datasets along with human feedback, present challenges in identifying and addressing biases. Furthermore, these models are susceptible to goal misgeneralization, hallucinations, and adversarial attacks such as red teaming prompts -- which can be unintentionally performed by human researchers, resulting in harmful outputs. These outputs are reinforced in research -- where an increasing number of individuals have begun to use generative AI to compose manuscripts. Efforts into AI interpretability lag behind development, and the implicit variations that occur when prompting and providing context to a chatbot introduce uncertainty and irreproducibility. We thereby find that incorporating generative AI in the process of writing research manuscripts introduces a new type of context-induced algorithmic bias and has unintended side effects that are largely detrimental to academia, knowledge production, and communicating research., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Let $(M^{2},g_{0})$ be a compact manifold with boundary, and let $g$ and $g_{0}$ be conformally related by $g=e^{2f}g_{0}$. We show that the inequality $$\nu_{1}(g)\geq\Big(\max_{x\in\partial M}e^{-f(x)}\Big)\nu_{1}(g_{0})$$ stated in Proposition 2 in [1], is only possible when the equality is achieved. In order to achieve such equality, it is required that the function $f$ be constant on $\partial M$, as it is mentioned in Remark 3 also in [1]. Hence, the scope of this inequality is less broad than the one suggested by the Proposition.

We introduce a novel approach for testing static typing implementations based on the concept of API-driven program synthesis. The idea is to synthesize type-intensive but small and well-typed programs by leveraging and combining application programming interfaces (APIs) derived from existing software libraries. Our primary insight is backed up by real-world evidence: a significant number of compiler typing bugs are caused by small test cases that employ APIs from the standard library of the language under test. This is attributed to the inherent complexity of the majority of these APIs, which often exercise a wide range of sophisticated type-related features. The main contribution of our approach is the ability to produce small client programs with increased feature coverage, without bearing the burden of generating the corresponding well-formed API definitions from scratch. To validate diverse aspects of static typing procedures (i.e., soundness, precision of type inference), we also enrich our API-driven approach with fault-injection and semantics-preserving modes, along with their corresponding test oracles. We evaluate our implemented tool, Thalia on testing the static typing implementations of the compilers for three popular languages, namely, Scala, Kotlin, and Groovy. Thalia has uncovered 84 typing bugs (77 confirmed and 22 fixed), most of which are triggered by test cases featuring APIs that rely on parametric polymorphism, overloading, and higher-order functions. Our comparison with state-of-the-art shows that Thalia yields test programs with distinct characteristics, offering additional and complementary benefits.

In this work, we update and develop algorithms for KMTNet tender-love care (TLC) photometry in order to create an new, mostly automated, TLC pipeline. We then start a project to systematically apply the new TLC pipeline to the historic KMTNet microlensing events, and search for buried planetary signals. We report the discovery of such a planet candidate in the microlensing event MOA-2019-BLG-421/KMT-2019-BLG-2991. The anomalous signal can be explained by either a planet around the lens star or the orbital motion of the source star. For the planetary interpretation, despite many degenerate solutions, the planet is most likely to be a Jovian planet orbiting an M or K dwarf, which is a typical microlensing planet. V1765 Cyg is a detached eclipsing binary containing a B0.5 supergiant and a B1 main-sequence star, with an orbital period of 13.37 d and an eccentricity of 0.315. The system shows apsidal motion and the supergiant exhibits strong stochastic variability. V1765 Cyg was observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite over four sectors. We analyse these data to obtain the first determinate light curve model for the system. To this we add published spectroscopic orbits to infer masses of 23 +/- 2 Msun and 11.9 +/- 0.7 Msun, and radii of 20.6 +/- 0.8 Rsun and 6.2 +/- 0.3 Rsun. These properties are in good agreement with theoretical predictions for a solar chemical composition and an age around 7 Myr. We also present two epochs of blue-optical spectroscopy that confirm the luminosity classification of the primary star and appear to show absorption lines from the secondary star. The paper "Simulating dynamical features of escape panic" by Helbing, Farkas, and Vicsek, published over two decades ago in Nature, has left an indelible mark on the field of crowd dynamics. With nearly 3,000 citations to date, according to the Web of Science records, and significant influence, it has shaped the crowd dynamics field. This analysis investigates the overall influence of this paper through a variety of indicators, mapping its reach across research areas. The intellectual foundation of the paper is traced, examining the references cited. The terminological impact is also explored, showing how the paper made use of terms like "panic" and "herding". Moreover, the alignment of the assumptions of the paper with empirical evidence is discussed, finding discrepancies in key assertions about panic behaviour. The numerical simulations of the paper and observations have significantly influenced the field, such as for the case of the "faster-is-slower" phenomenon. In this paper, we introduce Linked Papers With Code (LPWC), an RDF knowledge graph that provides comprehensive, current information about almost 400,000 machine learning publications. This includes the tasks addressed, the datasets utilized, the methods implemented, and the evaluations conducted, along with their results. Compared to its non-RDF-based counterpart Papers With Code, LPWC not only translates the latest advancements in machine learning into RDF format, but also enables novel ways for scientific impact quantification and scholarly key content recommendation. LPWC is openly accessible at https://linkedpaperswithcode.com and is licensed under CC-BY-SA 4.0. As a knowledge graph in the Linked Open Data cloud, we offer LPWC in multiple formats, from RDF dump files to a SPARQL endpoint for direct web queries, as well as a data source with resolvable URIs and links to the data sources SemOpenAlex, Wikidata, and DBLP. Abstracts derived from biomedical literature possess distinct domain-specific characteristics, including specialised writing styles and biomedical terminologies, which necessitate a deep understanding of the related literature. As a result, existing language models struggle to generate technical summaries that are on par with those produced by biomedical experts, given the absence of domain-specific background knowledge. This paper aims to enhance the performance of language models in biomedical abstractive summarisation by aggregating knowledge from external papers cited within the source article. We propose a novel attention-based citation aggregation model that integrates domain-specific knowledge from citation papers, allowing neural networks to generate summaries by leveraging both the paper content and relevant knowledge from citation papers. Furthermore, we construct and release a large-scale biomedical summarisation dataset that serves as a foundation for our research. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model outperforms state-of-the-art approaches and achieves substantial improvements in abstractive biomedical text summarisation., Comment: Accepted by EMNLP 2023

We present an addendum/erratum to the paper "Weyl Groups and Birational Transformations among Minimal Models" written by the author and published in 1995, adding the analysis of the "88-th" deformation type of a smooth Fano 3-fold with $B_2 = 4$ denoted as $n^o\ 13$, which was missing from the original classification table by Mori-Mukai and added later to the list of smooth Fano 3-folds with $B_2 \geq 2$, while correcting the mistake pointed out by Eric Jovinelly (also noticed earlier by Kento Fujita). The inner hundred parsecs of the Milky Way hosts the nearest supermassive black hole, largest reservoir of dense gas, greatest stellar density, hundreds of massive main and post main sequence stars, and the highest volume density of supernovae in the Galaxy. As the nearest environment in which it is possible to simultaneously observe many of the extreme processes shaping the Universe, it is one of the most well-studied regions in astrophysics. Due to its proximity, we can study the center of our Galaxy on scales down to a few hundred AU, a hundred times better than in similar Local Group galaxies and thousands of times better than in the nearest active galaxies. The Galactic Center (GC) is therefore of outstanding astrophysical interest. However, in spite of intense observational work over the past decades, there are still fundamental things unknown about the GC. JWST has the unique capability to provide us with the necessary, game-changing data. In this White Paper, we advocate for a JWST NIRCam survey that aims at solving central questions, that we have identified as a community: i) the 3D structure and kinematics of gas and stars; ii) ancient star formation and its relation with the overall history of the Milky Way, as well as recent star formation and its implications for the overall energetics of our galaxy's nucleus; and iii) the (non-)universality of star formation and the stellar initial mass function. We advocate for a large-area, multi-epoch, multi-wavelength NIRCam survey of the inner 100\,pc of the Galaxy in the form of a Treasury GO JWST Large Program that is open to the community. Hallucination plagues even frontier LLMs--but how bad is it really for summarizing academic papers? We evaluate Factored Verification, a simple automated method for detecting hallucinations in abstractive summaries. This method sets a new SotA on hallucination detection in the summarization task of the HaluEval benchmark, achieving 76.2% accuracy. We then use this method to estimate how often language models hallucinate when summarizing across multiple academic papers and find 0.62 hallucinations in the average ChatGPT (16k) summary, 0.84 for GPT-4, and 1.55 for Claude 2. We ask models to self-correct using Factored Critiques and find that this lowers the number of hallucinations to 0.49 for ChatGPT, 0.46 for GPT-4, and 0.95 for Claude 2. In the rapidly evolving field of crypto assets, white papers are essential documents for investor guidance, and are now subject to unprecedented content requirements under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR). Natural Language Processing (NLP) can serve as a powerful tool for both analyzing these documents and assisting in regulatory compliance. This paper delivers two contributions to the topic. First, we survey existing applications of textual analysis to unregulated crypto asset white papers, uncovering a research gap that could be bridged with interdisciplinary collaboration. We then conduct an analysis of the changes introduced by MiCAR, highlighting the opportunities and challenges of integrating NLP within the new regulatory framework. Navigating the vast scientific literature often starts with browsing a paper's abstract. However, when a reader seeks additional information, not present in the abstract, they face a costly cognitive chasm during their dive into the full text. To bridge this gap, we introduce recursively expandable abstracts, a novel interaction paradigm that dynamically expands abstracts by progressively incorporating additional information from the papers' full text. This lightweight interaction allows scholars to specify their information needs by quickly brushing over the abstract or selecting AI-suggested expandable entities. Relevant information is synthesized using a retrieval-augmented generation approach, presented as a fluid, threaded expansion of the abstract, and made efficiently verifiable via attribution to relevant source-passages in the paper. Since the release of LLM-based tools such as GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT the media and popular scientific literature, but also journals such as the Communications of the ACM, have been flooded with opinions how these tools will change programming. The opinions range from ``machines will program themselves'', to ``AI does not help programmers''. Of course, these statements are meant to to stir up a discussion, and should be taken with a grain of salt, but we argue that such unfounded statements are potentially harmful. Instead, we propose to investigate which skills are required to develop software using LLM-based tools. In this paper we report on an experiment in which we explore if Computational Thinking (CT) skills predict the ability to develop software using LLM-based tools. Our results show that the ability to develop software using LLM-based tools can indeed be predicted by the score on a CT assessment. There are many limitations to our experiment, and this paper is also a call to discuss how to approach, preferably experimentally, the question of which skills are required to develop software using LLM-based tools. The assignment of papers to reviewers is a crucial part of the peer review processes of large publication venues, where organizers (e.g., conference program chairs) rely on algorithms to perform automated paper assignment. As such, a major challenge for the organizers of these processes is to specify paper assignment algorithms that find appropriate assignments with respect to various desiderata. Although the main objective when choosing a good paper assignment is to maximize the expertise of each reviewer for their assigned papers, several other considerations make introducing randomization into the paper assignment desirable: robustness to malicious behavior, the ability to evaluate alternative paper assignments, reviewer diversity, and reviewer anonymity. However, it is unclear in what way one should randomize the paper assignment in order to best satisfy all of these considerations simultaneously. In this work, we present a practical, one-size-fits-all method for randomized paper assignment intended to perform well across different motivations for randomness. This literature review aimed to compare various time-series analysis approaches utilized in forecasting COVID-19 cases in Africa. The study involved a methodical search for English-language research papers published between January 2020 and July 2023, focusing specifically on papers that utilized time-series analysis approaches on COVID-19 datasets in Africa. A variety of databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science were utilized for this process. The research papers underwent an evaluation process to extract relevant information regarding the implementation and performance of the time-series analysis models. The study highlighted the different methodologies employed, evaluating their effectiveness and limitations in forecasting the spread of the virus. The result of this review could contribute deeper insights into the field, and future research should consider these insights to improve time series analysis models and explore the integration of different approaches for enhanced public health decision-making., Comment: 7 pages

Expert feedback lays the foundation of rigorous research. However, the rapid growth of scholarly production and intricate knowledge specialization challenge the conventional scientific feedback mechanisms. High-quality peer reviews are increasingly difficult to obtain. Researchers who are more junior or from under-resourced settings have especially hard times getting timely feedback. With the breakthrough of large language models (LLM) such as GPT-4, there is growing interest in using LLMs to generate scientific feedback on research manuscripts. However, the utility of LLM-generated feedback has not been systematically studied. To address this gap, we created an automated pipeline using GPT-4 to provide comments on the full PDFs of scientific papers. We evaluated the quality of GPT-4's feedback through two large-scale studies. We first quantitatively compared GPT-4's generated feedback with human peer reviewer feedback in 15 Nature family journals (3,096 papers in total) and the ICLR machine learning conference (1,709 papers). The overlap in the points raised by GPT-4 and by human reviewers (average overlap 30.85% for Nature journals, 39.23% for ICLR) is comparable to the overlap between two human reviewers (average overlap 28.58% for Nature journals, 35.25% for ICLR). The overlap between GPT-4 and human reviewers is larger for the weaker papers. We then conducted a prospective user study with 308 researchers from 110 US institutions in the field of AI and computational biology to understand how researchers perceive feedback generated by our GPT-4 system on their own papers. Overall, more than half (57.4%) of the users found GPT-4 generated feedback helpful/very helpful and 82.4% found it more beneficial than feedback from at least some human reviewers. While our findings show that LLM-generated feedback can help researchers, we also identify several limitations.

Question answering (QA) systems have attracted much attention from the artificial intelligence community as they can learn to answer questions based on the given knowledge source (e.g., images in visual question answering). However, the research into question answering systems with human mobility data remains unexplored. Mining human mobility data is crucial for various applications such as smart city planning, pandemic management, and personalised recommendation system. In this paper, we aim to tackle this gap and introduce a novel task, that is, human mobility question answering (MobQA). The aim of the task is to let the intelligent system learn from mobility data and answer related questions. This task presents a new paradigm change in mobility prediction research and further facilitates the research of human mobility recommendation systems. To better support this novel research topic, this vision paper also proposes an initial design of the dataset and a potential deep learning model framework for the introduced MobQA task. We hope that this paper will provide novel insights and open new directions in human mobility research and question answering research.

We present appjsonify, a Python-based PDF-to-JSON conversion toolkit for academic papers. It parses a PDF file using several visual-based document layout analysis models and rule-based text processing approaches. appjsonify is a flexible tool that allows users to easily configure the processing pipeline to handle a specific format of a paper they wish to process. COST INTERACT working group (WG)1 aims at increasing the theoretical and experimental understanding of radio propagation and channels in environments of interest and at deriving models for design, simulation, planning and operation of future wireless systems. Wide frequency ranges from sub-GHz to terahertz (THz), potentially high mobility, diverse and highly cluttered environments, dense networks, massive antenna systems, and the use of intelligent surfaces, are some of the challenges for radio channel measurements and modeling for next generation systems. As indicated in [1], with increased number of use cases (e.g., those identified by one6G [2] and shown in Fig. 1) to be supported and a larger number of frequency bands, a paradigm shift in channel measurements and modeling will be required. To address the particular challenges that come with such a paradigm shift, WG1 started the work on relevant topics, ranging from channel sounder design, metrology and measurement methodologies, measurements, modeling, and systematic dataset collection and analysis. In addition to the core activities of WG1, based on the strong interest of the participants, two sub-working groups (subWGs) have been initiated as part of WG1: i) subWG1.1 on millimeter-wave (mmWave) and THz sounding (subWG THz) and ii) subWG1.2 on propagation aspects related to reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) (subWG RIS). This position paper explores the broad landscape of AI potentiality in the context of cybersecurity, with a particular emphasis on its possible risk factors with awareness, which can be managed by incorporating human experts in the loop, i.e., "Human-AI" teaming. As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies advance, they will provide unparalleled opportunities for attack identification, incident response, and recovery. However, the successful deployment of AI into cybersecurity measures necessitates an in-depth understanding of its capabilities, challenges, and ethical and legal implications to handle associated risk factors in real-world application areas. Towards this, we emphasize the importance of a balanced approach that incorporates AI's computational power with human expertise. AI systems may proactively discover vulnerabilities and detect anomalies through pattern recognition, and predictive modeling, significantly enhancing speed and accuracy. Human experts can explain AI-generated decisions to stakeholders, regulators, and end-users in critical situations, ensuring responsibility and accountability, which helps establish trust in AI-driven security solutions. In the extensive recommender systems literature, novelty and diversity have been identified as key properties of useful recommendations. However, these properties have received limited attention in the specific sub-field of research paper recommender systems. In this work, we argue for the importance of offering novel and diverse research paper recommendations to scientists. This approach aims to reduce siloed reading, break down filter bubbles, and promote interdisciplinary research. We propose a novel framework for evaluating the novelty and diversity of research paper recommendations that leverages methods from network analysis and natural language processing. Using this framework, we show that the choice of representational method within a larger research paper recommendation system can have a measurable impact on the nature of downstream recommendations, specifically on their novelty and diversity. We introduce a novel paper embedding method, which we demonstrate offers more innovative and diverse recommendations without sacrificing precision, compared to other state-of-the-art baselines., Comment: Under Review at Scientometrics

In this paper, sequences of trials having three outcomes are studied. The outcomes are labelled as success, failure of type I and failure of type II. A run is called at most 1+1 contaminated, if it contains at most 1 failure of type I and at most 1 failure of type II. The limiting distribution of the first hitting time and the accompanying distribution for the length of the longest at most 1+1 contaminated run are obtained. In this paper, we provide a response to the comments made by Lackner et al. regarding our series of recent papers on "A novel direct drive ultra-fast heating concept for ICF". Specifically, we comment on the necessity of fuel pre-compression in the ICF context.

Highly specific datasets of scientific literature are important for both research and education. However, it is difficult to build such datasets at scale. A common approach is to build these datasets reductively by applying topic modeling on an established corpus and selecting specific topics. A more robust but time-consuming approach is to build the dataset constructively in which a subject matter expert (SME) handpicks documents. This method does not scale and is prone to error as the dataset grows. Here we showcase a new tool, based on machine learning, for constructively generating targeted datasets of scientific literature. Given a small initial "core" corpus of papers, we build a citation network of documents. At each step of the citation network, we generate text embeddings and visualize the embeddings through dimensionality reduction. Papers are kept in the dataset if they are "similar" to the core or are otherwise pruned through human-in-the-loop selection. Additional insight into the papers is gained through sub-topic modeling using SeNMFk. Many useful tasks on scientific documents, such as topic classification and citation prediction, involve corpora that span multiple scientific domains. Typically, such tasks are accomplished by representing the text with a vector embedding obtained from a Transformer's single CLS token. In this paper, we argue that using multiple CLS tokens could make a Transformer better specialize to multiple scientific domains. We present Multi2SPE: it encourages each of multiple CLS tokens to learn diverse ways of aggregating token embeddings, then sums them up together to create a single vector representation. We also propose our new multi-domain benchmark, Multi-SciDocs, to test scientific paper vector encoders under multi-domain settings. We show that Multi2SPE reduces error by up to 25 percent in multi-domain citation prediction, while requiring only a negligible amount of computation in addition to one BERT forward pass.

Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) being developed these days rely on various sensor technologies to sense and perceive the world around them. The sensor outputs are subsequently used by the Automated Driving System (ADS) onboard the vehicle to make decisions that affect its trajectory and how it interacts with the physical world. The main sensor technologies being utilized for sensing and perception (S&P) are LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), camera, RADAR (Radio Detection and Ranging), and ultrasound. Different environmental parameters would have different effects on the performance of each sensor, thereby affecting the S&P and decision-making (DM) of an AV. In this publication, we explore the effects of different environmental parameters on LiDARs and cameras, leading us to conduct a study to better understand the impact of several of these parameters on LiDAR performance. From the experiments undertaken, the goal is to identify some of the weaknesses and challenges that a LiDAR may face when an AV is using it. This informs AV regulators in Singapore of the effects of different environmental parameters on AV sensors so that they can determine testing standards and specifications which will assess the adequacy of LiDAR systems installed for local AV operations more robustly. Research consumption has been traditionally limited to the reading of academic papers-a static, dense, and formally written format. Alternatively, pre-recorded conference presentation videos, which are more dynamic, concise, and colloquial, have recently become more widely available but potentially under-utilized. In this work, we explore the design space and benefits for combining academic papers and talk videos to leverage their complementary nature to provide a rich and fluid research consumption experience. Based on formative and co-design studies, we present Papeos, a novel reading and authoring interface that allow authors to augment their papers by segmenting and localizing talk videos alongside relevant paper passages with automatically generated suggestions. With Papeos, readers can visually skim a paper through clip thumbnails, and fluidly switch between consuming dense text in the paper or visual summaries in the video. In this paper we prove that a smooth embedded paper Moebius band must have aspect ratio greater than $\sqrt 3$. We also prove that any sequence of smooth embedded paper Moebius bands whose aspect ratio converges to $\sqrt 3$ must converge, up to isometry, to the famous triangular Moebius band. These results answer the minimum aspect ratio question discussed by W. Wunderlich in 1962 and prove the more specific conjecture of B Halpern and C. A scientific paper can be divided into two major constructs which are Metadata and Full-body text. Metadata provides a brief overview of the paper while the Full-body text contains key-insights that can be valuable to fellow researchers. To retrieve metadata and key-insights from scientific papers, knowledge acquisition is a central activity. It consists of gathering, analyzing and organizing knowledge embedded in scientific papers in such a way that it can be used and reused whenever needed. Given the wealth of scientific literature, manual knowledge acquisition is a cumbersome task. Thus, computer-assisted and (semi-)automatic strategies are generally adopted. Our purpose in this research was two fold: curate Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG) with papers related to ontology learning and define an approach using ORKG as a computer-assisted tool to organize key-insights extracted from research papers. This approach was used to document the "epidemiological surveillance systems design and implementation" research problem and to prepare the related work of this paper. It is currently used to document "food information engineering", "Tabular data to Knowledge Graph Matching" and "Question Answering" research problems and "Neuro-symbolic AI" domain.

Academic reading is a key component of higher education, and serves as a basis for critical thinking, knowledge acquisition and effective communication. Research shows many students struggle with comprehension and analysis tasks with academic texts, despite the central importance of academic reading to success in higher education. Undergraduates and researchers need to internalize dense literature to scaffold their own work upon it. This reading task is time-consuming and difficult to do. Oftentimes, students struggle to actively and critically engage and as a result attain merely a cursory understanding of a paper's contents, or worse, incorrectly interpret the text. How, then, can we provide a means to more easily digest a text whilst also facilitating meaningful, critical engagement and understanding? Hyperauthorship, a phenomenon whereby there are a disproportionately large number of authors on a single paper, is increasingly common in several scientific disciplines, but with unknown consequences for network metrics used to study scientific collaboration. The validity of co-authorship as a proxy for scientific collaboration is affected by this. Using bibliometric data from publications in the field of genomics, we examine the impact of hyperauthorship on metrics of scientific collaboration, and propose a method to determine a suitable cutoff threshold for hyperauthored papers and compare co-authorship networks with and without hyperauthored works. Our analysis reveals that including hyperauthored papers dramatically impacts the structural positioning of central authors and the topological characteristics of the network, while producing small influences on whole-network cohesion measures. We present two solutions to minimize the impact of hyperauthorship: using a mathematically grounded and reproducible calculation of threshold cutoff to exclude hyperauthored papers or fractional counting to weight network results. This paper describes an overview of the techniques of Hibikino-Musashi@Home, which intends to participate in the domestic standard platform league. The team has developed a dataset generator for the training of a robot vision system and an open-source development environment running on a human support robot simulator. The robot system comprises self-developed libraries including those for motion synthesis and open-source software works on the robot operating system. The team aims to realize a home service robot that assists humans in a home, and continuously attend the competition to evaluate the developed system. The brain-inspired artificial intelligence system is also proposed for service robots which are expected to work in a real home environment.

Nontransitive dice are dice beating one another in a cyclic way: die A wins die B, B wins C, and C wins A (like in a rock-paper-scissors game). In this article, it has been shown that a structure of mutual wins of 3 nontransitive dice (with numbers equal to numbers from The Lo Shu magic square) can be repeated at least twice in different scales: - in the nontransitive relations between three sets, each of which consists of three nontransitive dice (total 9 dice); and - in the nontransitive relations between three sets, each of which consists of three nontransitive subsets, each of which consists of three nontransitive dice (total 27 dice). In other words, structures of nontransitive superiority relations can be self-similar. Aims of the future study can be: - to show opportunities for building self-similar structures of nontransitive relations of arbitrary depths of nestedness; and - to design a recursive algorithm of filling the structures with the appropriate numbers. An auditable register extends the classical register with an audit operation that returns information on the read operations performed on the register. In this paper, we study Byzantine resilient auditable register implementations in an asynchronous message-passing system. Existing solutions implement the auditable register on top of at least 4f+1 servers, where at most $f$ can be Byzantine. We show that 4f+1 servers are necessary to implement auditability without communication between servers, or implement does not implement strong auditability when relaxing the constraint on the servers' communication, letting them interact with each other. In this setting, it exists a solution using 3f+1 servers to implement a simple auditable atomic register. In this work, we implement strong auditable register using 3f+1 servers with server to server communication, this result reinforced that with communication between servers, auditability (event strong auditability) does not come with an additional cost in terms of the number of servers., Comment: 11 pages

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is a useful sensing technique and an important source of data for autonomous vehicles (AVs). In this publication we present the results of a study undertaken to understand the impact of automotive paint on LiDAR performance along with a methodology used to conduct this study. Our approach consists of evaluating the average reflected intensity output by different LiDAR sensor models when tested with different types of automotive paints. The paints were chosen to represent common paints found on vehicles in Singapore. The experiments were conducted with LiDAR sensors commonly used by autonomous vehicle (AV) developers and OEMs. The paints used were also selected based on those observed in real-world conditions. This stems from a desire to model real-world performance of actual sensing systems when exposed to the physical world. The goal is then to inform regulators of AVs in Singapore of the impact of automotive paint on LiDAR performance, so that they can determine testing standards and specifications which will better reflect real-world performance and also better assess the adequacy of LiDAR systems installed for local AV operations. The tests were conducted for a combination of 13 different paint panels and 3 LiDAR sensors. In general, it was observed that darker coloured paints have lower reflection intensity whereas lighter coloured paints exhibited higher intensity values., Comment: 23 pages, 29 figures. As for its applications, ham-sandwich theorem, necklace theorem and coloring of Kneser graph by Lov\'{a}sz are well-known. The Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) program observed the Extended Groth Strip with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in 2022. In this paper, we discuss the four MIRI pointings that observed with longer wavelength filters, including F770W, F1000W, F1280W, F1500W, F1800W, and F2100W. We compare the MIRI galaxies with the Spitzer/MIPS 24$\mu$m population in the EGS field. We find that MIRI can observe an order of magnitude deeper than MIPS in significantly shorter integration times, attributable to JWST's much larger aperture and MIRI's improved sensitivity. MIRI is exceptionally good at finding faint ($L_{\rm IR}<10^{10} L_\odot$) galaxies at $z\sim1-2$. We find that a significant portion of MIRI galaxies are "mid-IR weak"--they have strong near-IR emission and relatively weaker mid-IR emission, and most of the star formation is unobscured. We present new IR templates that capture how the mid-IR to near-IR emission changes with increasing infrared luminosity. We present two color-color diagrams to separate mid-IR weak galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) from dusty star-forming galaxies and find that these color diagrams are most effective when used in conjunction with each other. We present the first number counts of 10$\mu$m sources and find that there are $\lesssim10$ IR AGN per MIRI pointing, possibly due to the difficulty of distinguishing AGN from intrinsically mid-IR weak galaxies (due to low metallicities or low dust content). We conclude that MIRI is most effective at observing moderate luminosity ($L_{\rm IR}=10^9-10^{10}L_\odot$) galaxies at $z=1-2$, and that photometry alone is not effective at identifying AGN within this faint population., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures.
